An open letter to a worried patriot: Why you needn't lose sleep over a "North American Union"

Over the last few weeks, I’ve received several letters, e-mails and even phone messages from listeners to my radio show who feel desperately worried or bitterly offended because I dismiss their fears that the Bush administrations and “corporate America” have devised a secret plan to destroy our national independence by merging the United States, Mexico and Canada into a “North American Union.” This dreaded outcome would feature the end of the Yankee dollar as we know it and the substitution of a worthless new currency called “The Amero.” (a Western Hemisphere counterpart to the Euro, obviously). I wrote back directly to one patriotic Navy veteran who shares these concerns and who lives in the Seattle area, as I do, in order to put his agitated mind at ease. I reproduce my letter below, in the belief that it might also help others come to terms with the exploitative scam by which agitators, fundraisers and a few sincere paranoids have tried to frighten people over a fictitious scheme that’s never been a serious consideration for our government or politicians.

Howdy, Neighbor---

Thanks for your letter and I’m grateful that you care enough about my work to take the time to write to me. I also regret that you felt personally insulted when I used my radio platform to deride and mock the demagogues who are trying to frighten gullible people about the innocuous Security and Prosperity Partnership and the non-existent plans for a “North American Union.”

You felt that I insulted you “for strongly opposing the ludicrous ‘Security and Prosperity partnership/North American Union’ proposition being drafted.” No, I wasn’t insulting you for opposing any such scheme. All patriotic people would- and should -oppose any attempt to merge the U.S. with Mexico and Canada, and to terminate our national sovereignty. My scorn wasn’t aimed at opposition to such plans, but rather focused on those shameless scare-mongers who’ve tried to advance their own pathetic careers by getting you to believe that such plots even exist.

Doesn’t it tell you something that every time anyone in the administration or Congress is asked about the notion of a “North American Union” he denounces and rejects and ridicules the idea?

The demagogues and charlatans who promote this nonsense focus on Professor Robert Pastor of American University as the “Father of the North American Union.” But even Professor Pastor (who’s a liberal Democrat who advised Kerry and bears no connection whatever to President Bush) denied (to Jerome Corsi) that he believes that a “North American Union” is a good idea!

If you can find one official in any federal department, or one prominent politician of either party, who has ever, in any way, promoted submerging our national sovereignty into a new nation of North America, would you please give me the name? This is an urgent matter: don’t send a letter, call me with the name on Disagreement Day on our radio show, between 2:00 and 3:00 PM, any Thursday. (The number is 800-955-1776).

Ah, but the paranoid alarmists and sicko fear-peddlers suggest that the plans are secret, so naturally no one will acknowledge them. Never mind that when you go to the website of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (spp.gov) there is nothing in the least bit menacing or worrisome (unless you object to cooperation on securing the border and dealing with flu epidemics), and you will find extensive, well-documented and specific denials of grand plots that would damage sovereignty. The hypesters and hysterics tell you that it’s all part of the master plan to hide diabolical intentions until it’s too late, and the conspirators have already managed to terminate our independence and destroy our currency.

But surely you know that any “North American Union” would require a big, big fight in Congress before winning approval.

Even NAFTA – a much less significant change in economic policy – generated years of controversy and a ferocious pitched battle in Congress (remember the big televised debate between Ross Perot and Al Gore?). How do you think the purported conspirators would be able to impose their nefarious plans (including the non-existent plans for a new currency, the “Amero”) without going through months or years of argument and agitation, and somehow winning majorities in both houses of Congress? And if they’re really planning to go forward in this huge public fight, what sense does it make for them to keep their plans secret? Why aren’t they already working to soften up public opinion for their final victory?

May I also remind you that the main source of all the alarmism on this non-existent threat is a struggling website known as WorldNutDaily that also promoted an “authoritative” report that consumption of soy milk caused the current epidemic of homosexuality. When I ridiculed that story on the air, and invited its author and researcher to defend his crapola in public, he quickly scurried away to the dank and dingy under-the-rock quarters from which his “science” originated.

And please note that the same flamers and losers who promote the “North American Union” nonsense also warned the world that Y2K would bring the end of civilization as we know it. I scoffed at that paranoia at the time, and of course I was completely right. Where are the apologies from the demagogues who scared millions with tales that the “Millenium Bug” would cause our economy to collapse and democracy to end?

Neighbor, you sound like a good egg --- and a real patriot (and I salute your service as an officer in the WWII Navy, where my dad also served, but as a humble enlisted man). But as a proud nationalist, veteran and America-booster, you should join me in focusing on the real threats to our country: Islamo-Nazi terror, socialist militants who want to nationalize healthcare and kill the free market system, blame-America leftists who seek to cripple the country because they think that our current power and prosperity somehow threaten the world.

These are real threats. They are reflected in open and highly-publicized debate, with leading politicians (even Democratic Presidential candidates) rallying support for disastrous changes (like nationalized health care, higher taxes, more bureaucracy and less freedom) that would imperil the Republic.

The “North American Union” isn’t a real threat – in the political mainstream, no one favors it, no one advocates it, no one is planning it. With all the billions of words written against the North American Union, where are the corresponding speeches, articles, columns, or manifestos that actually favor it?

At the moment, the agitation and paranoia about this non-existent “scheme” (who are the schemers, anyway?) serves as a Weapon of Mass Distraction – taking good people (like you) out of the real battles where we need you.

I hope you’ll refocus your passion and admirable fighting spirit on the significant issues that menace our beloved country, and disentangle yourself from this delusional dreck.

Evidently, he would rather believe the goons in government that are trying to keep this under wraps as long as they can. The State of Texas and the Federal Government are working with the Mexican government and the Chinese controlled ports in Mexico to build a Super Highway called the Trans Texas Corridor. Its purpose is to connect Mexican Ports with an inland Mexican Port of Entry in Kansas City. Eventual plans continue this Super Highway to Canada.

You need to get out more and read what is out there.

Medved's blindness
is am embarassment to Americans. Just remember what happens to the ostrich who shoves his head in the sand (I refuse to see or to listen) - he gets a painful kick in the a**.

The NAFTA Superhighway is well underway - an eight-football-field-wide corridor that will run from Mexico to Canada and will have its "inland port" in Kansas. Mexico is demanding that this Kansan port be Mexican sovereign territory and that Mexico inspect its own trucks in Kansas.

Moreover, former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin has stated that he, Bush, and Fox SIGNED the so-called "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America", aka the "North American Union" - see http://geo.international.gc.ca/cip-pic/ips/ips-overview2-en.asp for the evidence from the (pardon the expression, Mr. Martin) horse's mouth.

Now, Mr. Medved, where is YOUR apology for your smug and smarmy response?

The Act is intended to implement an agreement between the United States and Mexico to accelerate the delivery of environmental infrastructure projects on the border by improving the operations of the Border Environment Cooperation Commission and the North American Development Bank.

Section 546 of Public Law 103-182, as added by section 1 of the Act, purports to direct the President to instruct United States representatives on the Board of Directors of the North American Development Bank to take a particular position with respect to certain grant proposals. IMMIGRATION BILL ADVANCES NORTH AMERICAN UNION
We are loosing our freedom and our sovereignty by a bunch of crooks and liars who occupy the executive branch of Government. Any questions?

Rep. Edward Royce, a high-ranking conservative California Republican, said over the weekend that a White House-backed amnesty plan for illegal aliens has provisions which undermine the national sovereignty of the U.S. and help facilitate development of a North American Union, much like the European Union that supersedes the sovereignty of 27 European countries.

He vowed to defy the White House and mobilize House Republicans against the bill, backed by what he called the “open borders lobby.”

Accuracy in Media has published several articles about the North American Union, the creation of which has been ignored by most of the media, except for Lou Dobbs of CNN and some conservative talk-radio hosts.

Listening to the radio show once was enough for me.

Re: NAU and SPP and the AMERO. Ignore what the sources say and watch what those in power actually do.

Trusting what the government tells us simply because we elected them is naive, and trusting the people who stay in the shadows and advise them is stupid.

There really ARE people in this world who practice to deceive and plan to end up at the top of the heap when the rest of us are subjugated. Addicted to power, they have no regard for the "common good" and will tell whatever lies are necessary in order to feed their addictions.

"Government" is not a spectator sport, and watching it is a responsibility shirked by too many. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, as the man said, and those of us "on watch" are getting pretty tired of being called nut-jobs.

Doesn't that stand for Northern Arizona University? Yeah, the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, but that town has become such a bastion of liberal lunacy, there's probably some adherents to this nonsense living there too.

Brought the nutters out with this one Michael. Your efforts don't seem to be dissuading many of these cranks, but prompted me to do a little investigating myself and I find what you say to be true.

This is a flare up of malignant malady which is always present in our society, it seems, Conspirophobia. It can be spread much easier now days by "Typhoid Mary" types with websites and reams of imagination. No real cure exists for those who suffer from it, but the rest of us can be inoculated with a little information and a big dose of common sense.

You trust the government and some "interests" more than I do, and perhaps more than the historical evidence warrants.

Please review the Jeckyl Island meeting and the events and timing of the subsequent creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913 and let us know if you still believe what you wrote.

There are other examples, such as tax withholding being for the duration of World War II only, a Social Security number never being used as a national ID number (That, incidentally, was part of the original Social Security Law), and ... the list goes on.

As for me, when Tinker Bell steps to the footlights and asks if we still believe that truth, goodness and honor come from government, I, for one, will answer, "Not on your life,"

I too was skeptical...
my thoughts were quite simple (and naive), in that who in their right mind would puposely destroy the last bastion of individual rights and freedoms, that being the US.

There is also a fantastic book named The Creature from Jekyl Island. Basically it is about the Federal Reserve who has purposely devalued the dollar to faciliate it's own crash. What will save us you ask - The emergence fo the Amero.

Other articles point out that the middle class is actually spending 50% of their wages on taxes (not just the income tax) and that there is a lie being spread that the majority of taxes are paid by the rich. Maybe this explains why the average american household only has 3,000 in savings. The rest is tied into an artificially inflated stock market. Some are in praise that the market has achieved new highs, I'm wondering if or not this will actually mean anything once the dollar crashes, afterall we heard stories about buckets and wheelbarrows of german currency after ww1 that wasn't worth a loaf of bread.

No Michael, you are ieth naive as hell or are complicit. When this all comes together, the NAU will have two classes of people, the rich with Marxist Hillary sitting on her throne and the rest of us. We will be in a de-facto police state because of the second amendment. Afterall the rich and powerful can't let the masses be armed now can they...

_The Great Deception_. The NAU doesn't need a long and protracted battle in either House of Congress--the British Parliment passed the EU treaty before the treaty was actually even finished. All it takes is some money as grease, a few interested people in the right places, and you have a new country--the NAU.

I would suggest that we should all be a bit more informed about how this works, rather than trusting Mr Medved when he says: "Nothing to see here, move along now.

Pushing the NAU conspiracy - the evidence and signed articles are too real to dissuade me to believe that it is a mere fluff-job. It may not happen under Bush, but what if *gasp* Billary or even worse, Edwards end up in the White House??? Billary sold our souls to NAFTA 13 years ago. And Edwards sold our souls to big tobacco - what's to say they won't sell us out to the NAU as well.

It may well all be a fun little conspiracy for us to sit here and debate - but it's a little too important for us to IGNORE it, too.

I don't know my friend - but I have to go with a LACK of term limits, cronyism, and American Citizen idiocy for $500.

I woke up when I was but still a child, and it kills me to see history repeated so blatantly and in my face. And who knows *whiskey tango foxtrot* to believe coming from our so-called leadership these days? Every last one of them is so full of lies and deceit, I feel like my tax dollars are going to Hollyweird instead.

I've been voting for NON-incumbents for the last 2 major Congressional elections... not hard for me, as not a single Republican represented my district in SoCal, but now that I've moved to a mostly Red state, I hope that will NOT be the case. Vote these self-serving Congressmen OUT that do nothing but further the lining of their pockets!! Let's get some campaign finance, tort reform, and TERM LIMITS done! Ya know... that real stuff we've been b!tching about for over a decade. :D

Anytime you bring up the NAU you are assured of a spike in comments and phone calls to your radio show. Years ago, when talk radio was a strictly local propositiion (before Rush made talk radio AND Medved national phenomena), a host could randomly take the day "off" by talking about Tri-lateral Commission and opening his phone lines. His whole program would be full of nut-burgers railing against "One-world-government" and the U.N. and the U.S.S.R. The host would usually just drink coffee, push buttons and listen to paranoid kooks.

A new generation of gullible kooks is buying into the NAU garbage and a new generation of talk radio hosts is using the topic to generate faux ratings. In Mr. Medved's defense, I don't believe he is deliberately using the topic to generate phone calls... but if he thinks he's going to convince them they're fools, he's only going to make them angrier and louder.

If it is a choice between believing Phyllis Schlafly's research or Medved's undocumented assertions, I chose Schlafly who has spent her adult life fighting for our constitutional freedoms.

Debunkers, read the links provided and the documents that plainly state the institutions that are being set up to implement a de facto NAU.

I don't care what anyone THINKS about this, I have seen some serioulsy disturbing EVIDENCE of what is going on! I trust Phyllis Schlafly's evidence over any of Medved's opinions any day of the week...and twice on Sunday's! But I guess that Mike, in his infinite wisdom, looks on Phyllis as just a poor, misguided "good egg" too, huh?

I think you miss the concept. Europe still has separate nations with separate governments in their union.

Their "union" and our "North American Community" (there is nobody that says we are going to have a "union" but rather a "community") still has separate nations. The "union" or "community" consists of international bodies that rule on trade disputes, immigration issues, laws regarding trade issues (like truck inspection and safety requirements and driving limits, etc.) and security issues. The currency issue was just brought up again the other day on a Canadian financial show and stated the "America is clueless, except for some in Texas."

I have even heard the currency issue mentioned on Asian news I listen to at night. Nothing specific, just talk about the declining dollar and what may happen with it as it continues its decline. The euro has risen 60% since 2000 to the dollar or rather the dollar has declined over 30% since then. (euro 2000 was $.83 and now is $1.355)

The "Smartport" in Kansas City is still progressing where the Mexican Port of entry will go. Kansas City isn't hiding the 10 years of work on this, as they have a website with news on the progress though they stopped most updates when this became a hot button issue and just list new businesses locating in the "Smartport."

Both the anti-"union" forces and the people like Michael are playing games with words and intentions.

One side creates the impression we will lose our government and the other that there is nothing to fear.

We won't lose our government anymore than any in the European Union have lost theirs. It isn't about losing your government but rather, having a "shadow government" that your government has obligated itself to. We have already done this with the U.N., WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA, other trade agreements, etc. where we agree to let a "third party" determine who is right in disputes or what we can or can't "sanction," or what we can and can't place tariffs on or what we can and can't do regarding military operations between the "members" of these organizations.

One move is toward more use of "international" or "World Courts," and "world banks," etc.

Notice the use of the Treasury department for a trade agreement and "International Trade Processing Centers" in the above quote. When you review the site, you see the Dept. of Transportation's involvement. But, all of this is based on "trade" and so they say there is no "Union." Yet, when you read NAFTA you see there will be "international" bodies to resolve disputes and tell us what we have to do.

None of this requires Congress to do anything because we already agreed to it. Congress already had the battle and passed the agreements.

Michael is playing on the fact that there is no Congressional action or really any knowledge of this, outside of Texas that just passed legislation to block the super corridor construction for 20 months with only 1 "no" vote and now Gov. Perry is threatening a veto. Also, there is a threat of cutting off Federal funds if the project is delayed by the Texas Legislature.

It's not even an issue of an actual NAU or whatever, as I wrote in my earlier post.

By simply refusing to enforce border security -- which is a fact, as we all know -- and granting amnesty -- which we all know is what Bush & Co want to do -- there is a de facto unification going on.

Deadhead is an apologist for the amnesty crowd -- that is also a fact.

So scoff if you wish. I'm also not some conspiracy theorist. I don't think it's a hidden hand of some nefarious cabal.

But I do think that it's a case of being told to ignore the man behind the curtain by elements -- Deadhead included -- who do have a vision of a North America with transparent borders on economic issues, including movement of labor.

Medved having problems at home?
I'm an independent who votes Republican who has listened to Mr Medved's radio show on long trips and at work for a couple years. I've seen a recent severe decline in his degree of tact and civility. Something is wrong with this guy. He's now mostly just insulting to just about everyone. The only reason to listen before was that you got a debate, not an insult contest.

Now that His cheerleading stance on every topic (basically the current administration can do no serious wrong, except maybe not be conservative enough for him), he is getting called out by conservatives as well, and his reaction reminds one more of Al Franken than Michael Medved. Rabid insults to the caller, and a quick hook. As if he's afraid to debate since he knows he's wrong.

Something has changed in his persona. Was it all an act before? Is this the real man? Or is something in his personal life bothering him? Has he lost his soul to the temptations of power and prestige?

Mr Medved has been being given insider "perks" by the administration such as visits to the white house and invites to functions. With his meteoric rise in radio he's now feeling like a "big shot" instead of a guy you saw once a month giving movie reviews. I suspect this is the age-old tactic of flattering your potential enemies. Ancient Romans did this too. Make the man have something to lose if he criticises you. Perhaps Mr Medved, never one to be confused with the "cool" glitterati of our times, sees himself as having conquered his Ned Flanders nerd persona, and doesn't want to give all that up by being deeply critical of the administration or mainstream Republicans.

I have no idea of the North American Union is a real threat to happen. I do know, however, that mass immigration is a death sentence for our nation, and Medved is ok with it, as long as his buddies need them for low paid jobs and they get a little govn't paperwork done first. I've read maybe a dozen books on immigration. His lack of true concern about it makes me very suspicious of him. I quit listening to his radio show regularly months ago, and after hearing him call a caller who simply questioned him on this topic "Idiot", I decided I was done for good.

You can tell he's frustrated and can't give a rational answer like he could on issues he was right on. We often get that way when we know we're in the wrong. But the lure of being a "somebody" for mainstream Republicanism (not conservatism) is just too strong, I guess.

Does it really need to be stated that conspiracies are by definition not done in public? That if someone did plan on combining the economies of our nations tightly they know it would be unpopular and therefore until they had the numbers on their side (via immigration and demographic changes) they certainly wouldn't make public pronouncements of their plans, so therefore there would be no "proof" that Medved and a few others here have pounded on the table and asked for?

Even in the height of his power, Hitler was very secretive about his "final solution" and there was actually some reluctance on his part to sign anything related to it and he usually spoke in euphemisms and hints at what he wanted done.

So I doubt any politician is going to run on an openly "pro North American Union" platform. Well, maybe in about 40 years, when Hispanics are a majority.

Medved's asking for this proof is something he does to give the illusion of winning the argument w/o actually making a point. He puts the argument that no politicians are making speeches in favor of it on a tee, then knocks it out of the park, so he can claim victory. Another pretty old debate trick that's growing tiresome.

Very disappointed in the man. I guess ultimately everyone's a phoney up for sale. Wordliness corrupts.

America's Future

These next 2 years are vital to the future of this country. For 2007 we must make certain that McCain/Kennedy or whatever it's called this year does not pass the House. It will pass the Senate. The President will sign it, followed by the Totalization Treaty with Mexico, which qualifies former illegals with just 6 qtrs(18 mo) even if worked illegally, the benefits that we had to work 40 qtrs(10 yrs) to qualify for.

In 2008 we must make the candidates address border security and immigration enforcement.
20-30 million citizens of other countries are in our country illegally, 55% from Mexico, most of the rest from other Central and South American countries. Let's not ignore the leftward voting trends of these countries. It is notable that they picked May Day, an old communist day of celebration for their marches.

Most polls show at least half of the American citizens of Hispanic descent want the borders and laws enforced. Republicans will not win by alienating their current voters to get 40% of a new small block that will grow very large, very fast if amnesty is granted. That will grow the Democrats vote larger and faster as the influx increases exponentially as the result of another amnesty. It will spell the end of the Republican Party. The people who used to vote Republican will stop voting or form a new party. Conservatives will lose political influence and we will slide inexorably towards socialism (it has already started).

Most of what you hear about this issue is political propaganda that tries to convince you to give up your country without a fight, including on Fox News. The big money players are all on board the cheap labor express, they care not that American citizens do not want another amnesty. We know the last one resulted in 10 times the number of illegal aliens and a general disregard of our laws. The next one will be equally successful.

We need Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, not reform. We need to restore respect for the law and the faith of the American people that their government is not selling them out. Amnesty for the illegal aliens is also amnesty for the corrupt companies who have been employing them. Money trumps everything, including love of country. Multi-nationals have no loyalty to country by definition, they see us as a market, not a nation. They see people as workers, documented or undocumented, no difference. If they can't send the work to where the labor is cheaper, then they want to bring the cheap labor here. Citizenship is meaningless.

If we love our Constitution and our representative Republic and we intend to keep it we must not surrender our sovereignty or abandon the rule of law. Profits must not supercede security. We should not create a new path to citizenship. We have a path to citizenship, more generous than any other country, illegal aliens have ignored it and bad choices do have consequences.

What's sad are the comments on this article. I'm reading alot of seemingly normal intelligent people becoming what they fear most...militant left, or at least as militant and ridiculous as the left. I'm really tired of listening to the smear use of the term neo-con. I agree with Medved that govt. doesn't want it, however he and I part ways about corporate America. They do want it, and we all know how easy politicians sell out. So I do think vigilance is warranted because if we aren't vigilant the politicians will pull a fast one like they always do. What a coinkydink trying to slam 20 mill illegals into our country with no way to administer this. Chain migration laws WILL result in 80 million. North American Union Is Inevitable
The North American Continent provides us with defensible borders at the ocean's edge. Our artificial boundaries with Mexico and Canada cannot be defended. The solution to this problem, to the illegal immigration invasion, and to having a socialist islamo-fascist-friendly welfare state on our northern borders is the same: inevitably, both Mexico and Canada will become part of the United States of America. By overthrowing the Mexican oligarchy of super-rich families, imprisoning their corrupt government, and forcing Mexico to comply with our laws, the incentives for the invasion of low-skilled uneducated workers will disappear. No more illegal immigration! Also, we will stop islamo-fascists from using Canada as an easy back door to enter our country. We should not be afraid of this prospect, instead, we should be encouraging our military to invade Mexico and depose their government at the earliest opportunity. Make no mistake, socio-economic and political forces make it inevitable that we absorb both Mexico and Canada into the US. Let's make sure we do it the right way.

I am a little surprised by all the NUA conspiricists out there. When it comes to extrapolating future scenarios though, I tend to be more of an incremental, slippery slope kind of theorist. In this case though, it doesn't matter whether you are a conspiricist or an incrementalist, I think we all agree that we will end up in the same place if our present course is not altered dramatically. I agree with the posters above who say there does not have to be a conspiracy for there to be a de facto union. The only thing that has to occur is a continuance of the status quo - open borders and unenforced immigration laws will do the job just as efficiently as any shadowy conspiracy will - and all in broad daylight!

Your post reminds me of a quasi-satirical paper I wrote in an undergrad poli-sci class on this very subject. In it, I made the case for the U.S. to finish the work we started back in the mid-19th century and annex "the other half" of Mexico.

Rather than attempting to police hundreds of miles of indefensible borderlands in the Sonoran desert, by driving south to Panama, we could easily establish an inpregnable border of less than 50 miles.

Annexing Mexico would also make the job of propping up the Mexican economy and welfare system that much easier, if we were to establish an American-run administrative apparatus there. Think of the British running Egypt and India for comparison. The present situation in Mexico is so hopeless, things could only improve with the addition of good old Yankee ingenuity at the helm.

Finally, our natural resource problems would be mitigated considerably if PEMEX (the Mexican National Oil Company) were just taken over by a consortium of American oil interests. With a more efficient management of this strategic resource, capital investment would increase, and the "administrative fees" raked off by the U.S. would help to defray the costs incurred in fixing the "Mexican Problem."

If a North American Union does happen it will be mostly on USA terms. US laws will extend North and South, not vice versa. Again, there is no "planned" merger of governments. "One world government" is not a merging of governments. If it or this exists, it will be like the European union where each nation continues to be a separate nation with a separate government just like our states were. Then in our Republic, we surrendered some sovereignty to the federal government. In this case, we as a nation will surrender some sovereignty to an "international" body or bodies that cover the various agreements for security, prosperity, trade, and possibly currency eventually.

There is nobody that I know of, in the Texas Legislature, Congress or the anti-union sites that says we will stop being a separate nation with a separate government. That wouldn't be a "union of nations" but a new nation. A union is nothing more that 1,2,3, or more nations agreeing on some common goals, ruling organizations, and strategies to reach those goals.

It is those international ruling bodies, especially, that are the objection because some sovereignty has to be surrendered for them to have authority. Look at the complaints about the sovereignty we surrendered to the WTO for example. That was a "union" of nations too, but certainly not of the magnitude of what is being proposed here for the "prosperity and security" aspects. The WTO doesn't build super corridors across our nation as NAFTA does. The WTO isn't setting up "inland ports" with foreign customs offices inside the U.S.

Take the goals in the preamble of the NAFTA agreement and you can see that as broad as they are, they authorize anything you think will reach the goals in the agreement. But, the whole agreement is on this site for you to review.

Despite socialists nominally controlling Canada, the right is a powerful opposition force as well. Further, we outnumber Canada 9-1, and 90% of them live within 100 miles of our border to boot. As to Mexico, thier primary religion is Catholic. The only reason they vote Dem on social issues is to suck the teat of the welfare state. Take away thier need for welfare dependency and remove thier corrupt government by annexing the whole nation, and you've got a lot of regular old Jose Doe's who want to run a business and provide for thier family in peace. This thing is coming to pass right now. They have been constructing it for the last few years. My understanding is they plan for it to be completed by 2010. If you check into how the other unions came to pass, every one I looked into started with a trade agreement; then they built roads, if applicable, to join the countries to be merged; then they established a new Parliament; then a new currency and finally, a new Constitution.

Europeans are bucking the Constitution phase, as I'm sure you've read.

There are a lot of people posting on this thread, I have never seen before and it is very heartening to see so many interesting, not to mention, aware, Americans. But, I sure don't see many of the frequent posters. They are all over under the "war" articles, talking about defending our country and "keeping us safe" from terrorists.

Yet here, we have a direct threat to our very country's foundation and everything for which it ever stood, with this North American Union. If we allow this thing to be wrapped up, we won't have a country for which to fight. This experiment of freedom and liberty called America, will be history.

Though the US administration insists that the SPP does not undermine US sovereignty, how else can one take statements like this? How can establishing a "trilateral regulatory cooperation" not undermine our national sovereignty?

The website also states SPP's goal to "[i]mprove the health of our indigenous people through targeted bilateral and/or trilateral activities, including in health promotion, health education, disease prevention, and research." Who can read this and not see massive foreign aid transferred from the US taxpayer to foreign governments and well-connected private companies?

Also alarming are SPP pledges to "work towards the identification and adoption of best practices relating to the registration of medicinal products." That sounds like the much-criticized Codex Alimentarius, which seeks to radically limit Americans' health freedom.

Even more troubling are reports that under this new "partnership," a massive highway is being planned to stretch from Canada into Mexico, through the state of Texas. This is likely to cost the US taxpayer untold billions of dollars, will require eminent domain takings on an almost unimaginable scale, and will make the US more vulnerable to those who seek to enter our country to do us harm.

I've been researching this ever since I first heard of it back in 2002. Recently several trustworthy websites have come up missing, but this doesn't really matter as I have saved them as PDF files.

Y'all have probably run across my brother, Anti-Jihad Crusader, on Townhall. He used to be one of the most skeptical people you could run into about this, until he read some of the files.

Medved has his eyes wide shut about this. The same thing can be said for Hannity, Rush and several other talk-radio hosts. I've heard Hannity flatly hang up on someone and ridicule them on the air when they simply mentioned the SPP or the NAFTA Super-highway.

The only one I've even heard give any attention to this is Michael Savage, who most consider a kook.

I haven't totally made up my mind about this yet but at least I have the data to make up my mind unlike anyone who tries to research this at this late date.

Things are looking to be heading directly toward this "union of states" but I don't believe that the American people will just take this without a fight.

The use of the word "conspiracy" is problematic. Here's the Mirriam-Webster definition of "conspire:

"a : to join in a secret agreement to do an unlawful or wrongful act or an act which becomes unlawful as a result of the secret agreement."

So I hope you see what I mean about that. It is not simply a synonym; it has a very specific definition.

As to the other "usual" posters; a lot of activity on a lot of columns today, man. I ran into some of them elsewhere, but there was simply a lot going on.

North American Union.
Michael, I have always respected you and still do. But, your insistence that there are no plans for a North American Union (or some such organization) is quite amusing. First look at what is going on. There is NAFTA, the Supper Highway, and all these meetings between Canadian, Mexican, and U. S. diplomats about "free trade" between us. What has Mexico to trade? Their oil wells are drying up. They need to have more exploration which the government is incapable of doing and they are so socialist that they will never allow a private company to do this. The only thing they have left is poverty and a corrupt mind set to government. They don’t have the money to buy our things. When we set up plants there, they had to be pulled out because it just wasn't working out. Now Canada has lots of resources but a socialist mind set. Their health care system is broken. Why else would those Canadians that can afford it come here for medical treatment? If their system is so good, what difference would it make how much money they have and come here? You almost sound like a mouth piece for those that want to keep us stupid to what is going on. I have not heard one politician definitively say there is nothing like the N. A. U. being planned. It does not matter what it is called it still world be the same thing.

North American Integration

But Texas is not the only beneficiary of the economic benefits of the trade agreement. Other governors know the growing importance of trade between their states and Mexico. Across our country, Mexico is proving to be a strong economic friend.

Our economic bond with Mexico carries with it some very positive long-term results. An isolated United States will not be able to compete successfully in a world economy where Europe and Asia are united into common-market partnerships. The trade agreement wisely affords our country the opportunity to join forces with Canada and our neighbors to the south -- first Mexico, then Chile, then other emerging capitalist countries in Latin America. Within a united alliance, America will be economically stronger. We must not allow isolationist rhetoric or bad trade policy to alienate our trading partners.

Not only will free trade help us, it provides a much-needed boost for Mexico. As capitalism takes hold in that country, wages will begin to climb. Most people who cross the border are hoping to make a living and provide for their families. The United States has immigration laws in place. I strongly support them. Every nation has a right and responsibility to secure its borders. The Government simply must do a better job of enforcing ours. All of my fellow border governors have called for more equipment and more personnel.

We must expand projects such as Operation Hold the Line, a highly successful program in El Paso, Tex. Under this innovative operation, Border Patrol officers regularly patrol known crossing points so that illegal immigrants are deterred or apprehended before they disappear into our communities. Even though it has been successful, it has not been carried out at other high-traffic corridors along the border.

Despite the problems faced by the United States and Mexico, solutions will be forged in the fire of friendship and respect, not in the heated sparks of emotionally charged words.

Our trade policy, coupled with the way we treat our neighbors, must be viewed as an integral component of the immigration debate. Growing economies and an expanding middle class in Mexico create a more attractive market for American products and services. They also make for more manageable southern borders.

The United States and Mexico are linked through history and geography. The free trade agreement has linked us through economics, job creation and competition. If problems arise, they are best solved through friendship, not angry rhetoric. Friends help each other and bring out the best in one another. Friends can solve problems together. I am providing a link at the end of my comment to a document referred to as the "Guanajuato Proposal" on the White House website. This is where the NAU concept first began -- at least during the Bush Administration.

Bush visited Fox in Guanajuato, Mexico almost immediately after his first inauguration. The result was this joint statement in which the two leaders agree to an unprecented level of cooperation between our country and Mexico. They state that they will talk to Canada and consolidate a "North American economic community" -- for those who don't know, the European Union began as the European economic community. Now, can Mr. Medved in all his infinite wisdom explain to me what Bush's "North American economic community" means for my country? The American people are right to question this.

I used to love listening to Medved's radio show when I still lived in the States. On this issue, though, I have to agree with all the people who disagree with him. I'm originally from Texas, and let me tell you, America is already disappearing. The American government doesn't need to sign some formal document to merge with the Mexican one. All they have to do is keep their stupid "open border" policy and look the other way while hordes of illegal aliens stream across the border and erase America's culture.

This agreement made on Feb. 16, 2001 in Mexico is what first led to the bilateral Partnership for Prosperity (P4P) between the U.S. and Mexico in Sept. 2001. Look this up on the White House website as well. The P4P, by the way, is the agreement under which the U.S./Mexico Social Security Totalization Agreement was negotiated (I assume you keep up with the mainstream media and do know about the S.S. Totalization Agreement that would virtually combine our Social Security Administration with Mexico's). The P4P was phased out by the trilateral Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) once the U.S. and Mexico got Canada involved, and the three nations began their work on this "North American economic community" -- the above White House link blatantly shows that was their goal, which was stated in 2001. The SPP is the culmination of Bush's desire to integrate this continent. By Bush's own words, this cannot be denied.

So, since you are the self-proclaimed expert on this whole thing and dismiss it entirely as a conspiracy theory, please explain what "North American economic community" means for the United States of America. Interesting (isn't it?) that he says the three North American leaders are keeping the SPP "under the radar screen" because they don't want to take it to their legislatures. If the SPP is nothing to worry about, then why do they want to keep it so quiet? Please, you several Medved-loving geniuses, explain this to me.

Lawton, Washington, nerve center for the Nike sites thereabouts and Headquarters of X Army Corps. The WACs assigned to the communications bunker are my acquaintances. All I know is what I read in the Seattle-Intelligencer and Seattle Times. I don't take time to watch TV, for my off-duty time is taken up socializing with WACs or bagging groceries at the Commissary. But that two Senators, from disparate places and parties, both announce and maintain the same story is a poser. So I ask two WACs from the communications bunker if there is anything to it.
"It's our court-martial if you repeat this. Yes, we have surveillance that can spot a gnat on a man's backside in Cuba. They are building missile sites, apace." This was in early August.

The days went on and by October I began to believe that the WACs may have just been humoring me. October 22, 1962 came, and with it Kennedy's announcement that the Soviets were indeed preparing to install missiles which could be thrown as far north as "Hudson's Bay, Canader". We went on 24 hour Red Alert which lasted for a few days. Kennedy had bluffed Kruschev out. WOW.

But over the years , we came to the knowledge that Kruschev bluffed the Kennedy brothers out. No more U2 flights from Ankara. No more undermining Castro. NO kidding!

There are some interesting and convincing articles and commentary that provide support to both sides of this debate. There is also some conspiracy theory stuff that is over the top. Then there are comments by Mr. Pastor some years ago supporting a one nation North America, just as there are those within the UN who support and want to do what they can to have a one world government. (With our good and honest friends at the UN running the show of course).
I am skeptical of assurances from any socialist. And there may be conservatives who are in love with the idea of a one world global government run by corporatists.

I have a subscription to their magazine, "Foreign Affairs," and enjoy reading it. I do not put much stock in the conspiracy theories about the Bilderbergs, Skull & Bones (Skull is spelled with a k not a c, by the way), and so on. I, in fact, thought the SPP and North American integration were conspiracy theories when I first heard about them -- that is, until I started researching the topic. I don't just surf the web looking for any info on the SPP I can find, nor do I believe everything I read.

Now, having said that, let me reiterate that the link I gave in my previous post is not from an unreliable source -- unless you consider the White House to be an unreliable source. In other words, the notion of creating a "North American economic community" is coming straight from the horse's mouth (Bush's mouth to be exact). Hardcase, I just want you to answer the question I posed and will pose again:

"What does a 'North American economic community' mean for the United States of America?"

Why can't you just answer the question, assure all of us that it is nothing to worry about, and put all of our minds at ease. The U.S. government's 2005 SPP report calls the SPP a "dynamic, permanent process," and I would like to know who gave Bush permission to implement a permanent policy such as this. Do you know the answers? I would surely like for you to enlighten me since apparently you know it all. You know, Bush himself could put alot of these questions to rest by talking to the American people or even Congress about it, could he not? I have a feeling Dr. Pastor is correct in that Bush is intentionally keeping this "under the radar screen" -- but, then, you may consider Pastor to be a conspiracy theorist as well.

In the meantime, Hardcase, I would like to know if you're telling me that it's wrong for the American people to question their government. Are you actually against transparency in government? It appears as if this is the case judging by your comments.

Answer the questions and argue the merits of your case. If you can't do so, and can only resort to name-calling, then you really do have nothing to say.

Now, prove to me that you know what you're talking about beyond a shadow of a doubt. What is Bush's "North American economic community?" Could it, for example, involve Mexican trucks coming across our border with unfettered access to our nation's highways? This trucking deal, by the way, was even mentioned in the White House link I provided (the Guanajuato Proposal in 2001).

As far as the "pernicious nonsense" you alluded to in your post -- I'm just referencing the government's own words. I would like for you to specifically point out anything I've used as a reference (which is only the White House link) that is untrue. Everything I've made comments on has been from the White House itself. Yes, what the current administration (which I regrettably voted for twice -- happily, at the time) is now doing is "pernicious nonsense."

Hardcase, it appears that you, my friend, are a Kool-Aid drinking Bush supporter just like Michael Medved. Medved has made it clear that Bush can do no wrong in his eyes, and is apparently on the same level as God himself. Such blatant loyalty such as this is, frankly, not too smart. And, if Medved is one of these "sane" people you mentioned in your post that you could quote to disprove North American integration, well, you're going to have to do alot better than that.

When you say you could go into talking about "stuff like the Constitution, the Rule of Law, the Supreme Court, and the will of the people," yeah, you can refrain from doing so. I have undergraduate degrees in both political science and history and will be attending law school in the fall. I feel as if I have very good knowledge of these subjects -- I don't need a lesson in government from you, so please spare me your arrogant gibberish.

One more thing: the "will of the people" that you mentioned -- can you show me where the "will of the people" is being applied to the implementation of the "dynamic, permanent process" that we now know as the SPP? Oh, the "will of the people" is nonexistant on the whole matter? Hmmm, well I'll be damned, Basketcase, or whatever the hell your name is.

A Little Levity
You think these clowns know what they are doing other than bilking the US taxpayer. Check this out under myths and facts of SPP.gov. I laugh my *$$ off everytime I read it.

Fact: The SPP is being implemented with existing budget resources.

One of the three main reasons for SPP.gov is to protect us from the "Pandemic Avian Flu" Why not make up another disease the airborne AIDS virus. Or why not care about a disease that is actually occurring at the moment after practically disappearing in the US, TURBURCULOSIS. Also, more people die each year from illegal alien crimes in the US than soldiers in Iraq. We got to get these self serving creeps out of government. The entire SPP is a farce, everysingle line. All this more efficient crap in the SPP is for the corporations. Corporations will not pass the savings. Last I checked demand dictated prices, not how much the corporations save by us handing them new infrastructure and allowing them to hire by different standards than less powerful businesses that can't get around burdensome workman's comp, employee taxes, and regular business taxes. Oh and if we want to avoid third world diseases guess who will have to pay for the entire healthcare of Mexico, you and I. I doubt the corporations will volunteer to pay. But hey we will be safe from the Avian Pandemic Flu somehow according to the SPP in a more efficient way?!@#? Oh and by the way the SPP will integrate the private sector for our good and for real helpful imput not that the politicians husbands, wives, dads, business associates (wink, wink) happen to be the more abundantly contracted private sector discussed in the SPP. To all: print out the SPP.gov pages, every page. Pick it apart, every sentence. As soon as they are alerted the keepers of that page, they tend to change it up. At one point they had the map of the highway on SPP.gov. Then that moved to Nascocorridor. Nascocorridor claims to be a nonprofit private sector org. Nascocorridor had a legislative update tab that spoke of a 280 billion dollar bill in the senate and the house. This update has disappeared as well. Time to adjust the tinfoil on my head again.
