Eight reasons conservatives must vote on November 7th

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

For months, we’ve been hearing about the sour mood of U.S, conservatives, with left-leaning activists and liberal commentators savoring (and promoting) the possibility that many of their opponents on the right will express their frustration by abandoning the GOP on November 7th. As Election Day approaches, however, the evidence accumulatesthat dissatisfied and restless Republicans have begun to come home, recoiling at the very real prospect of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House and second in line to the Presidency. Nevertheless, those of us who travel in conservative circles can still hear some grumbling and gnashing of teeth, accompanied by tired (and tiresome) arguments on behalf of desertion from the field of political battle.

By now, we all know the lines: the Washington Republicans have become indistinguishable from Democrats (they’re all “Republicrats” and “Demicans”--- yuck, yuck, yuck!); they need to be punished for overspending and failing to halt abortion, immigration, deficits and stem cell research; the GOP deserves blame for waging a cowardly, politically correct, inconclusive war in Iraq; Bush and his buddies are deliberately undermining our national sovereignty because they are secretly controlled by the Council on Foreign Relations, Skull and Bones, the Bohemian Grove, the Illuminati and other avatars of the New World Order; and the only way to get Republicans to develop backbone is to hurt them at the polls, sweeping away the current crop of panty-waists and globalists and replacing them with ideologically committed he-men who can reconnect with the American mainstream and then, in some future confrontation, win decisive victories against the newly energized Democrats.

Whatever the merits in these claims, most Americans who place themselves to the right of the Kerry-Pelosi-Howard Dean-George Soros Democrats are coming to realize that we can’t afford two years (or more) of leftist lunacy in Congress for the sake of some future (and far from certain) return to power. The current situation presents solid, undeniable reasons that this election amounts to a Very Big Deal and all conservatives of conscience must make a point of voting on November 7th.

Herewith, eight concrete reminders of why your participation counts:

1. Judges. On April 20th of next year, Justice John Paul Stevens (arguably the most liberal member of the current Supreme Court, will celebrate his 87thirthday. The actuarial tables suggest that the chances are excellent that he will vacate his high office some time before President Bush leaves the White House – at a time when Justice Stevens is just two months shy of his 89th birthday! No decision will impact the long-term future of this Republic more substantially than the choice of a successor to this veteran jurist. If the Democrats have taken over the Senate, with Pat Leahy of Vermont as the new chair of the Judiciary Committee, the chances of winning confirmation for any justice in the Alito-Roberts mold are nil. Many conservatives felt (rightly) troubled by the aborted nomination of Harriet Miers; but even this sort of “stealth nominee” would find it difficult to escape a Democratic Senate.

Whatever our complaints about other aspects of the Bush record, his judicial nominations have been incontestably superb—vastly better than his father’s, than Nixon’s, and even than Reagan’s (remember Sandra Day O’Connor? Anthony Kennedy?). With one more nomination, the high court would enjoy a clear strict constructionist majority (Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito, and……). But sulking conservatives want to give up a once-in-a-lifetime chance to overrule Roe v. Wade and other examples of catastrophic judicial overreach because you’re angry about Mark Foley’s e-mails? And what about all the dozens of appellate and federal district court nominations that will come up in the next two years? These appointments will help to shape the federal judiciary for a generation, with incalculable impact long after any current complaints have been forgotten.

2. Encouraging the Enemy. The only way to win wars is to convince your adversaries that further resistance is useless. Democratic victories in the House and/or Senate would help persuade Islamo-Nazi terrorists that they are, in fact, winning the war for US public opinion. No one questions that the jihadists closely monitor our domestic politics. Why else would they so conspicuously intensify their violent attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan just weeks before a crucial election? They also clearly want Democrats to win, not just because they hate Bush but because they clearly perceive the irresolution, confusion and urge to appease of the liberal faction in the current debates. Even if the Democrats resist these temptations once in power (after all, they would still face two more years of a Bush White House as a block to their more irresponsible impulses) the much-ballyhooed fact of their political triumph would greatly encourage anti-American forces everywhere and thereby prolong this war.

3. Security. When it comes to vigorous interrogation and wiretapping of terrorist suspects, more than 70% of Congressional Democrats opposed even the compromise policies jointly shaped by President Bush and Senator McCain. Liberal leaders have been outspoken in demanding more “oversight” for our dedicated and phenomenally successful counter-terrorist fighters. The possibility of endless investigations, and even prosecution, regarding Guantanamo and other efforts to force information from deadly anti-American combatants, very obviously threatens all progress in the war on terror. Disaffected Republicans must seriously consider whether they want our battle against al-Qaeda to proceed in a more timid, limited and legalistic way, because with Democrats controlling Congress (and specifically its investigative and funding powers) that is precisely what we are going to get.

4. The Economy. There’s no doubt that Democrats will raise taxes – they’ve pledged to do so and no veto threat could stop them, since all they need to do is to sit tight and to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire. It’s not certain that GOP control will bring further tax reductions, or even protect all of those enacted in the last six years, but it is certain that Democrats will move in the tax-hike direction. Combined with Nancy Pelosi’s promise to raise the minimum wage by two-dollars and hour within the first four days (one hundred hours) of taking the Speaker’s gavel, and of sharply increasing spending for federally subsidized college loans, Medicaid and other social programs, the Democratic tax increases could easily provide the economic jolt to bring the current boom to an abrupt halt. The Dems proudly announce they want more governmental “supervision” of the economy – concerning energy, environmental regulations, labor rules, “gender equity,” family leave, and so forth. Conservatives understand that this sort of growth in federal power hardly constitutes a reliable formula for prosperity. And why, exactly, would anyone on the right support the huge boosts in federal college spending that would provide a vast transfer of wealth from ordinary, middle-American taxpayers to universities that represent islands of unreconstructed leftism within the body politic?

5. Immigration. Many conservatives dislike the Bush approach to immigration, with its calls for a guest worker program and earned legalization for some of the illegals already here. Nevertheless, the President and Congressional Republicans did manage to pass “enforcement first” legislation with provisions for workplace penalties and construction of 700 miles of border fence. The Democrats have indicated they will compensate for this common sense victory with a sweeping, overly-lenient, unconditional amnesty proposal far beyond anything authorized by Bush (or even McCain). Immigration reform will almost surely clear Congress at some point, in some form, in the next two years. Why would anyone on the right believe that in working with a Democratic House and Senate, Bush would come up with a stronger immigration bill than he would in working with his fellow Republicans—who are much less hospitable to the “open borders” crowd?

6. Framing the Debate. It’s true that public opinion shapes elections, but elections also shape public opinion. Consider the impact of the strong showing by religious conservatives in 2004: for the last two years, Democrats have been trying to figure out how to make themselves sound more “spiritual” while commentators of every stripe pay new attention to values voters. If, on the other hand, Dems win a sweeping triumph on November 7th, the media will trumpet the long-awaited demise of the era of conservative dominance, proclaiming a new age of secular enlightenment, tolerance, multiculturalism, peace, partying and rock n’ roll. If conservatives feel discouraged now, try to imagine the paralyzing impact on right wing activism of cover stories and media analysis heralding the nationwide defeat of traditional, family friendly politics. There is, very simply, no example in all American history of advocates who managed to strengthen their cause or advance their ideas by losing a high-profile, watershed election.

7. Losing Control of the Party. When a political party gets thrashed at the polls, it never moves in a rightward (or leftward) direction: it inevitable moves to the center. When Goldwater found himself swamped by Lyndon Johnson in ’64, the GOP didn’t go back to strong conservative principles: it embraced the “centrist” (and deal cutter) Richard Nixon. Similarly, the McGovern disaster of ’72, temporarily discouraged the leftist tendencies among Democrats, as they turned to the self-proclaimed moderate Jimmy Carter. It’s illogical to expect that retreat for today’s conservative-dominated GOP would bring a more conservative party orientation: look for new strength to the mushy middle of the party that would blame the stridency of right wingers (particularly the religious right) for the disaster.

8. Losing Structural Advantages. One of the fundamental truths of American politics is that it’s always easier to defend Senate and House seats than it is to knock off incumbents. Particularly in today’s furiously competitive environment, incumbency confers countless financial and tactical advantages; the majority party starts each battle for Congressional control with significant resources that the challengers can’t match. It is always easier to maintain a majority – no matter how narrow – than it is to dislodge one. That’s why Republicans have managed to survive various ups and downs while maintaining control of the House for 12 years; and Democrats kept their House control for an uninterrupted 40 years before that. It’s a naïve fantasy to suggest that it’s a safe bet that after two years running the House of Representatives (and/or the Senate), the Democrats will get driven from power. It’s far more likely that they’d hang on for several more election cycles, while conferring huge (perhaps decisive) advantages to their Presidential candidate (Hillary? Obama? Kerry?) in 2008 and beyond.

The considerations listed above deserve attention for anyone still grousing about the many shortcomings of Denny Hastert and Bill Frist and George W. Bush. It’s easy to see that our guys aren’t perfect – but this election isn’t about suitability for Rushmore. It’s about maintaining some chance for conservative ideas and policies to prevail at a time of danger and challenge to the nation. Anyone who believes that liberal approaches would work better will no doubt vote Democratic, and that’s appropriate. But for those of us who understand the importance of conservative thinking, and who would like to see that thinking more effectively applied in the next two years, there’s no excuse for advocating unilateral disarmament and surrender, handing power to some of the worst elements on the political scene.

Those who advocate non-participation in this crucial election don’t just call for conservative punishment and defeat. Whether they like it or not, they pave the way for leftist victory. Frankly, America deserves better.

On losing
control of the party:

That is one of my worst fears of this election.

If the Dims do pull it off, it will be a false signal to the Repubs to get even more wishy washy, even more RINO. They'll be a bunch of McCains.

And the judge nominations are very important. I see the Supreme Court as more important than even the presidency, since this is where most laws are being made now anyway (thanks ACLU).

The Repub party needs to find it's conservatism, which, to quote Rush, "works every time it's tried".

Reagan was a real Republican. He didn't cower every time a Dimo said "BOO!", unlike our current Repub party that has acted like a minority for the last two years. And because of it, Reagan wasn't worried about losing the White House two weeks before the 1984 election.

If the Repubs do lose, everyone reading this needs to write to the RNC and tell them why: They need to start acting like Republicans again.

If You Want Limited Government
The best way to get it is by returning to a strict constructionist view of the Constiution. This cannot happen if the GOP loses the Senate. So if you hate the GOP more than you love the Constitution, then by all means stay home on election day, because you can kiss both of them goodbye.

Dave
"If the Dims do pull it off, it will be a false signal to the Repubs to get even more wishy washy, even more RINO. They'll be a bunch of McCains."

I was thinking the same exact thing.

OIdcon
Seeing as you're an ally of our and America's enemies, why do you even bother calling yourself a conservative?

The enemy of my friend is my enemy.

Buck
I think you owe us an example of Scalia legislating from the bench.

Also, it's obvious that the terrorists want the Democrats to win. That's why their front groups in America are organizing voter drives for the Demonrats.

Wiretapping terrorists is a matter of commanding the armed forces in defense of the United States. Congress isn't authorized to tell the President what he can and cannot do with the defense forces that Congress provides - Congress is only authorized to provide it. The Supreme Court agrees. Once Congress authorizes the use of offensive force, the President can do whatever he wants with everything we have. If we are on defense, the President doesn't need authorization at all.

jerubaal
Holy crap. Voting for a congressional Democrat in one election makes me an ally of America's enemies. I'll stack my conservative credentials against anyone's. Oldcon means one of those anti big federal government Goldwater Libertarian Conservatives not the "Neocons" of today. And I never stay home on election day. In fact, I will be there from 6 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. - but that's what we enemies of the republic do - try to make sure everyone who wants to vote can.

Also
The Constitution never expressly requires a warrant. In only demands certain conditions be met if a warrant is to be issued. All reasonable searches are valid with or without a warrant.

Deadhead strikes again!
No wonder I've come to so despise Michael Deadhead. This column typifies why. For those of you who said on my blog essay (click my name) that he doesn't use the type of hyperbole of which I accused him, here he's doing it again, proving my point.

"Why People of Conscience Can’t Afford to Facilitate a Leftist Victory" So if you disagree with Deadhead, you have no conscience.

His entire second paragraph ascribes a lot of Leftist arguments to Conservatives, which is total BS.

He ascribes incredible law-making powers to Dems who would be in the slimmest of majorities even assuming they take anything at all. Filibuster, anyone? The fabled Veto Pen?

He absolutely ignored the historical fact that disgust with the Peanut Farmer Presidency led directly to Reagan.

Further, Deadhead is a selective conservative, not a true conservative. He believes in "sin taxes" and smoking bans, among other things.

This is exactly why I stopped listening to his radio show many months ago.

oldcon
Nice irrelevant blurb, as if I'm supposed to respect your enmity towards the only party that will return the country to a strict interpretation of the Constitution, because you help people vote?

That's nice of you, and all, but it's also irrelevant to the fact that you'll be supporting the traitor party of the Democrats this election.

jerubaal
Bush has spent more money that all the Presidents before him COMBINED and has expanded the scope and power of the federal government more than any President I can recall. How is this Constitutional or Conservative? It isn't.

With the unconstitutional legislation that Bush and company have put forward and Congress has passed, if you truly are a conservative (vs. a Trotskyite Neocon), you would be mad as all heck and would not vote the incumbents that voted for these things back into office.

Olcon and his co-religionists
Should get "thank me, I voted for the Democrats" stickers if, Liberty forbid it!, they win this election.

Jerubaal
You are full of it with your statement, and I quote:
"The Constitution never expressly requires a warrant. In only demands certain conditions be met if a warrant is to be issued. All reasonable searches are valid with or without a warrant."

Clearly, you are in dire need of reading the Bill of Rights. I will assist you.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Reason # 8 : Israel
If Americans turn control over to the Dems, the Islamic forces will (correctly) interpret this as a collapse of our willingness to fight them in the Mid-East and as a repudiation of Pres. Bush's strong pro-Israel stance.

End result: Islamic attacks on Israel. Then stand by for Kerry's 'Global Test'!

Oldcon
"Bush has spent more money that all the Presidents before him COMBINED"

You know that's not true. He probably did spend more than any of them, though.

"has expanded the scope and power of the federal government more than any President I can recall"

Then learn about Roosevelt sometime.

"With the unconstitutional legislation that Bush and company have put forward and Congress has passed, if you truly are a conservative (vs. a Trotskyite Neocon), you would be mad as all heck and would not vote the incumbents that voted for these things back into office."

If you want these people reigned in on the unconstitutional crap they keep voting for, then realize that these same people are supporting strict constructionists for the Supreme Court. Those judges might very well reign in this stuff one day, but there's no way they could do it now with only four Constitutionally literate members on the Court.

Besides that,
the Demonrats aren't any better, so your argument for tacitly voting for them because the democrats are worse isn't logical or persuasive.

jerubaal
Jerubaal, you need to stop worrying so much about your beloved Republican party and more about our Constitution and our country.

Face it. The Republican party is currently corrupt as all heck. The NEOCONS are NOT conservative and right now seem to be running the show. They have passed some seriously bad legislation that is dangerous to our country, in addition to letting another country invade us.

I have had enough!

I will vote for the person, regardless of party, that proves to me that they put our Constitution and our country first.

By the way, I've been a Republican all my life.

Liberty, Trust Me
I didn't go to law school for nothing.

Read that amendment yourself. Here, let me help you:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,"

Aha! The first requirement - no unreasonable searches and seizures are permitted.

" and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Here's the second requirement - no warrants to search can be given without probable cause, oath, and specificity.

Notice what's missing? The amendment NEVER says that you have to get a warrant to do a search. The only requirement in the fourth amendment for searching is that it be reasonable.

Searches happen all the time in this country with less than probable cause (i.e. reasonable suspicion). That's constitutional when a reasonable suspicion makes the search reasonable.

Liberty
Then vote for the person that will put strict constructionists on the court.

I could care less about the party if it weren't the only way to save the constitution from the slow death it will die as a living document. The only way to return the country to strict constructionism is a Republican Senate and President for the next 2-10 years.

Liberty
"By the way, I've been a Republican all my life."

Good for you, you've been a better citizen than me. I've gone back and forth my whole life, though never for one second since 9/11.

I should clarify
The Court does interpret the fourth amendment as nevertheless requiring a warrant whenever its practicable. But that's not directly expressed in the amendment - you have to consider that they put the warrant requirement in there for a reason...

The fact that a warrant is not expressly required in the 4th amendment is expressed in the jurisprudence as the exigent circumstances exception to the warrant requirement.

I think enemy combatants
are an exigent circumstance, and in any case were most likely not contemplated as being part of the warrant requirement.

Besides, the president has inherent authority to gather intelligence on our nation's enemies.

MacZed
I agree with everything you said. Also, I don't understand why conservatives who plan to sit out the election don't just go ahead and vote for the Democrats. That way, they cancel out the votes of the clearer-headed conservatives as well.

bring it on
the election of the Dems will put an end--finally, to the Reaganites, Buchananites, Libertarians--control over the GOP.

They'll complain about Bush not being able to do anything for the next 2 years to stop the Dem majority led Congress...and they'll talk about the borders and the budget and how terrible that the GOP has let them down...

But no one will care.

And the GOP can go back to being the party of adults who know how Washington is run.

Oh we might get another Reagan...one that will give us REAL amnesty and bring record deficits...but God, let us hope that we don't have to live thru another Carter first.

Oh, I forgot
about the "other" Reagan we will risk everything to get? Will he, like Reagan did in Lebanon, also cut and run?

You know fairy tales are fine...but the one about a perfect Conservative by the name of Reagan is going to get this nation killed. Before deciding that a record economy, no attack after 9/11 on US soil, and changing the Supreme Court isn't good enough...make sure what you are comparing Bush against is all that the revisionist claim he is.

Medved's Exactly Right About #7
Medved couldn't be more right about #7.
My husband is British, so we follow British politics, too. The Labor Party (socialists) were out of power for 12 years, so what did they do? Did they embrace their traditional base, the unions and other socialist stalwarts? Heck, no. They ran from them like a house on fire and repostioned themselves as New Labor, which was more moderate and centrist. And sure enough, now they've been in power for almost 10 years.

Now the Tories (conservatives) are doing the exact same thing. They're abandoning Mrs. Thatcher's legacy as too extreme and are trying to position themselves as more moderate for the upcoming British election next year. If you're a traditional conservative in America, and especially if you're a member of the Religous Right, then you can kiss the Republicans good-bye if they lose this Congressional election. They will cut their losses, blame everything on the fringe, and then go with somebody like McCain for the presidential election.

november vote
trying to make people fear the unknown, again. since republicans can't run on their record, their accomplishments, or their "ValueS", resort to fear. a girl scout troop could govern better than this group. THROW THE BUMS OUT!!!

Mushy middle Republicans
Like me. Here's to hoping the party lurches to the middle, which Mr. Medved is so afraid of! :-D

admonishment, laugh break, tip
admonishment

you kids are starting to sound like the candidates for governor in massachusetts. You ought to have a good whipping and be sent to bed without your supper. Calm down and try to have a reasonable conversation. Is it possible to have one without using your favorite buzz words, such as neo-con, dims, libs, and the like? I am optimistic enough to hope that it is. Make me proud.

Laugh

Q: What do you call a midget clairvoyant who escapes from prison?

A: A small medium at large.

tip

Hold your nose and vote republican. Then sit down and write a letter to your reps and tell them of your disgust, if you haven't already done so.

my work here is done

one more thing
one reason Mr. Medved forgot - Imagine Nancy Pelosi third in line for the presidency.

Scary, huh?

Can't WIN by LOSING
Of course the Republicans aren't doing EXACTLY what I want them to do.

That doesn't mean the Democrats will.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained...

What an interesting string of comments here this morning. Like oldcon I got the vote in the 60's and have voted Republican all my life. And, like oldcon, in addition to making a living I've pulled my time in the traces rescuing and rehabbing the Republican party from the 40 plus year banishment in the wilderness the liberal Rockefeller Republicans and their policies drove it to. In those early days the Rockefeller liberal party types had NO concerns about destroying the party if they didn't get their way. They gave us a 'stop Nixon' movement in an attempt to deny him the party nomination in '68, thus splitting the party...they abandoned Ford at the polls for having pardoned Nixon, thus removing him from their hate motivated feeding frenzy to destroy the man, giving us A Jimmy Carter presidency. It would take hours, perhaps days to recount the incidents and actions the liberal wing of the Republican party did over the years including their resistance to the Reagan party nomination and their collusion with MSM to undermine his presidency. Oh, sure they did, and they didn't care if it tore the party apart or not. As far as they were concerned it was their way or the highway.

Now however the same liberal elements in the party, smelling defeat at the door now beg for a 'hold your nose and vote Republican' approach while at the same time attacking and/or condemning the conservative base for tearing the party apart. Why would Republican liberal types think the 'we aren't going to change so you change and support us" approach would work? And, wasn't it the power grab of the Republican liberal types who tore the party apart and not the conservative demand for accountability from those THEY placed in power? No, friends, don't expect an admission of guilt from them..be they Democrat or Republican, liberals NEVER take blame. They will grab credit for the good created off the efforts of others, but the arrogance of the breed doesn't allow them to ever ever take blame.

That being said conservative voters now have a conundrum on their hands.

To vote Republican now would tell the liberal leadership of party they were right all along. That they could continue to give the finger to the conservative base and its concerns and still get their vote with a little slight of hand here and a vague, later to be broken, promise there. To the liberal Republicans it says what was and is and can continue to be. No worries mate, we have it all figured out.

The flip side of course is to not vote and support the Republicans allows Democrats to take power. The bogey man! The question then is a liberal Dem so much different than a liberal Republican? Some will say yes and give multiple reasons...some valid...others say if we don't make the attempt this election cycle to reconstitute the Republican party to its conservative ideals and principles it may well never be done and our future choices will be between which gaggle of liberals we want to run things this election.

There is the risk of course that if Dems gain one or both houses this time we'll never be able to remove them. Rather scary to contemplate, but functionally, how would that differ much from allowing the Republican liberals to continue to run things? Liberals are liberals and liars are liars no matter their party affiliation.

To me, the risk has to be taken and the Republican leadership given thinking time on how and why they blew it. The gain in losing 20 house seats could be fewer RINO's on the ballot in '08, and a more responsive, principled party in the following years. Losing 20 seats means that only a net gain of 6 in '08 will re-install the party as the majority party. Not an impossible task. The view was much worse during the 30 years from Goldwater to Newt, but WE...WE..Conservatives...WE got it done, and what can be done once can be done again..if it has value.

Problem solved as far as I and many other Christian conservatives are concerned. Its time for the Republicans to go..to think..and if they figure it out we'll give them a second chance come '08. The risk is not in our ability to return them to power as I see it, but will we want to....and the answer to that will be in their hands.

Medved makes compelling case.
Good analysis. There may be some honest resentment among a few conservatives with the Bush administration, but I believe much of this alleged unhappiness with Bush is liberal hype and spin orchestrated by MSM(media). I happen to be extremely angry with President Bush over Iraq, but it will not keep me from voting. And I will be voting for conservative candidates, most of whom are GOP. It is unfortunate that the GOP house of representatives is more likely to fall into Democrat hands than is the senate, especially when GOP House more nearly reflects the will of the American people on immigration than does the Senate or President Bush. Americans who are angry about immigration will hold the party in power responsible... regardless. It does not seem fair.
It is crucial to keep the senate in GOP hands. As feckless as some GOP senators are, it would be a tragedy for the idea of justice itself, as well as for future Bush judicial nominees, to have a senate judiciary committee headed by Patrick Leahy.

THIS IS A DECENT DEBATE TODAY
However, rumor has it that a new powerful third party will be available before election day. I've been told that they have a absolute plan to secure our borders and remove all the illegal free loaders off of government assistance programs. They also tell me that a balanced budget will happen within their first twelve months of office. The war on terror and the little monkeys leaders of third world countries somehow will be dealt with by simply pushing some magic little red button. (this one I've got to see) Now here is the real kicker, next Tuesday, only one week before election day, this miracle party will be distributing a punch list out to all legal registered American voters that contains every imaginable issue or concern that currently faces this nation, and all you have to do is simply put a check mark next to your top two picks, drop the postage free form in the mail box, and your two selections are guaranteed to be addressed, and completely taken care to your complete 100% satisfaction within thirty days. (man these guys are good) Now this is the part i just can't understand, they guarantee all of the above mentioned, but they also guarantee that they will perform at a level that is 100% better than what we have been experiencing from the current political parties that are roaming the streets of Washington DC. Look for this amazing, new third party option to be arriving soon, in time for the mi-term elections in boxes of Captain Crunch and Fruit Loops.

Heads Need To Roll

How's that again?
jerabaub says "It is unfortunate that the GOP house of representatives is more likely to fall into Democrat hands than is the senate, especially when GOP House more nearly reflects the will of the American people on immigration than does the Senate or President Bush. Americans who are angry about immigration will hold the party in power responsible... regardless. It does not seem fair."

Perhaps it is exactly because the "House more nearly reflects the will of the American people" that the Republicans are being held responsible for what they've said to be elected and what they've done after.

There are consequences for actions, deeds, words and broken promises, and thats as it should be. Conservatives put them in power and if they are removed its their own fault for failure to perform.

Don't Raise our Taxes
It may be true that the Republicans have disappointed us. However, there is no doubt that the Democrats would have done worse. There are two sure things:
1) the Democrats will raise taxes;
2) the Republicans select better judges.
It is regrettable that Bush has not controlled spending better. He is a disappointment in this regard. But do any of you seriously think Gore or Kerry would have done better. Can you imagine what "bold moves" they would have taken after 9/11. No, I'm disappointed that Bush and the Republicans have not done better. But to believe that the Democrats will improve things is to deny reality.

8 reasons to vote Democrat
1) Corruption

When one party runs Washington the rats can do whatever they want without fear of repercussions. Think about it: The only reason Abromoff, Delay, Ney, Safavian Cunningham, Jerry Lewis, etc are even under invesitgation is because the FBI isn't a Republican institution. The Republicans themselves never did anything to thwart there efforts.

In the first 100 hours, Nancy Pelosi has promised to introduce legislation that would reform the relationship between lobyists and legislators.

2) Security

The Democrats understand that the war on terror will mainly be faught through intelligence gathering and, yes, law enforcement. (Republican pundits are lying when they say the Dems don't want to listen to the terrorsists phone calls. They believe that it's dangerous to let the White House listen to anyone's phone calls without any checks on that authority.) And they understand that we will need to work with our allies rather than p!ss them off. Also the Democrats would not have been so stupid as to start an unnecessary war with a country that had nothing to do with the people who attacked us. Think of what we could have done for security with the 400 billion dollars we've spent in Iraq.

Nancy Pelosi has promised that they would enact all of the recomendations of the 9/11 commision. The Republicans have been dragging their feet on these recomendations. The 9/11 commission gave them mostly Ds and Fs.

Read the books FIASCO and HUBRIS if you want a good description of well the Republicans have been fighting the war on terror. Seriously, does anyone think that anyone else could do a worse job than these bozos?

3) A check on the President.

Habeus Corpus (the right to a fair trial) is fundamental to a free society. In case you people didn't know, we no longer have this right. The President can decide that you or any other American citizen is an enemy combatant and lock them up forever without a trial. And there are no checks on this power whatsoever.

4 A balanced budget

The only reason the Dems are talking about raising taxes on the top 1% of wage earners is because they think it's a good idea to balance the budget. They believe that deficts as far as the eye can see are bad. If you don't make more than 250,000 a year, your taxes will not be increased.

5 The economy

A balanced budget will help. But more importantly the Dems will look out for the middle class. The policies of the Republicans have made the economy fairly strong, except that the only people benefitting are the wealthy. A raise in the minimum wage would be good for the economy because it will put money in the hands of people who will spend it. Besides, any employer who is paying less than $7.25 an hour ought to be ashamed of themselves.

6 Republican arrogance and hubris

If they retain power do you really think that the Republicans will reform themselves? Of course not. It will only tell them that it doesn't matter how corrupt they are, they can still continue to win elections. Please folks, don't encourage that kind of behavior.

7 Government accountability

If the Dems do take the House, we will finally have hearings into whether or not the White House manipulated the pre-war intelligence. Whether they did or not, most Americans believe they did. So, for the sake of clarity and honesty and accountability, and for the sake of healing this once great nation we need to get to the bottom of this question. And if the White House didn't manipulate the pre-war intel, you folks should have nothing to worry about.

8 Teach lying pundits like Prager and Medved a lesson

These guys are masters at manipulating language and the facts. What they say is often technically true but is still designed to mislead.

For example: I recall an argument Medved had with a caller. The caller said that there were no ties between Saddam and al Queda. Medved responded by saying "Don't be ridicul*us, of course Saddam had ties with international terrorism.

Now, Medved's response is technically accurate because Saddam gave money to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. But it's a lie because they are not the same thing as al Queda.

See how he does that folks? He does it all of the time. He's a lying sack of sh*t and he needs to know that his lying will not be rewarded.

Prager's technique is a little different: He likes to focus ONLY on the good the Republicans do, and ONLY on the bad the Dems do. By doing this he manipulates and distorts his audience's perceptions of reality. Which, in my book, is evil.

Phylo out

Outstanding column
Well said, Medved. The thought of "teaching them a lesson", as so many conservatives say they're going to do, is ludicrous. All of us must see that you'll never win anything by losing. Work to challenge incumbents in the primaries 2 years from now, but to cede power to the freakish left on hopes of coming back stronger is folly. Hold Republicans feet to the fire -- actively write and call -- after you've elected them, but first you must elect them. The Democratic alternative is nothing short of compromising national security and stopping a booming ecomony dead in its' tracks. Some lesson.

Truly a nose holder.....
My Representative is in a 'safe' district, and will be re-elected by the Democrat majority of the district. I fear that the pi$$ poor candidate put up by the Republican party of Colorado will lose, and the Democrat will win. That, coupled with the Democrat majority in the Legislature, will insure increases in almost all the government things that I despise.
Still, I'll vote Republican, if only to insure that when I shave on the mornings after the 7th of November, I will know that I did what I could to help stem the tide of socialism in the country.

Not voting, to send some kind of 'message', is, to be honest, stupid.

From the other side
Please vote. I do not at all like the current leadership in the Democratic party. I am an old fashioned democrat from the 50s mold. The dems understood at the time what leadership meant and this bunch is so wimpy they do not deserve to win. If they loose this one it will open the door for a more moderate democratic party which is more my style. If they win we will be stuck with them for awhile and only when they get pinned with the coming problems will they be exposed and that may be too late.

If the reps win, it will become clear to the country that the current bunch is totally incompetent as the piper will be arriving soon for his payment. I would not mind a true conservative leadership. I do not see the current bunch as liberal but as confused and stupid.

We need leadership really bad in the country and not moronic idealists . A republican win will set the stage for serious change since there is no heir apparent on either side for 2008. Maybe someone will rise from the ashes that we can all better live with.

I still remember when Democrats ruled
I know that not all problems have been resolved the way I would like, but I still prefer "wisihy washy" Republicans to a Democrat party that wants more socialism -- clearly not what was intended by the Founders.

I listened to Sen. Barak Obama talk about self-reliance ans personal responsibility, but the welfare state is not the way to either of those goals.

I do not have to listen to what and politician od columnist has to say about how to vote. I onlt have to read the Declaration of Independence and Contitution and some of the warnings of the Founders to recognize that less government is best government and that American law, nor foreign law, at least in some fashion, reflects the will or lack of will of Americans.

Until we elect term limited folks who believe protecting America and American citizens first -- and EQUALLY - is their primary duty, we can only expect things to get worse.

Oops....
I meant to say that the "pi$$ poor candidate for Governor put up by the Republican Party of Colorado...."

I spell check, but not having the opportunity to review posts before submitting them means sometimes the post is incomplete.

a footnote.
In reference to the consternation exhibited by a responder to my comment on Jeffrey's column, the point I was making on immigration is this: If Americans, especially conservative Americans, regard immigration as a seminal issue, and if their views on immigration more closely comport to the position of the GOP House of Representatives than to either the Democrats, GOP Senate, or President Bush, then it is illogical for them to "punish" the GOP House members by not voting, or voting against them. My point was that if immigration were a pivotal issue, and if the GOP House reflected their views, then it makes no sense to punish the GOP House. Enough said.

Excuse me.
Medved's column. I have been dealing with both columns.

Ziggy
Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

You sound like a small child who wants to take their ball and go home because the other kids aren't playing fair.

I'm especially impressed by your last paragraph wherein "if they figure it out we'll give them a second chance come '08", with no regard for the damage that would be done in the next two years.

I too am a lifelong conservative, but unlike you, I remember the 40 straight years that the party was in the minority and am not willing to take the chance of having that repeated because of an interparty squabble.

I would hope that all responsible conservatives would see the dangerous flaws in your argument.

8 reasons?
I need only one or two

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House - eeeeeek!!

Harry Reid, Majority Leader - double eeeeeek!!

Think of the damage these anti-American socialists would do!!

Vote 'em out?
There is no question that many of the republicans in congress deserve to be turned out of congress: but they do not deserve to be turned out in favor of democrats, they deserve to be turned out in favor of better republicans.

The time for "teaching the republican party a lesson" has passed for this election cycle. Now we must teach the democratic party a lesson: you cannot so easily destroy the only viable party that holds any hope for a conservative or even moderate direction for this country.

But, of those conservatives who are intent on staying home this year, I would like to ask:

1. Is your congressional district presently represented by a republican?

2. If it is, has he done a good job? Has he tried to move the country in a rightward direction? If he has done well, does it make sense to refuse support to him - one of the good guys - simply because you are frustrated with other republicans? Wouldn't it make more sense if only the more liberal republicans were sent packing and the conservatives retained?

And if your R representative did not do well, did you do all in your power in the primry season to unseat him in favor of a better R?

3. If your representative is a Democrat, does it make sense to stay home and help preserve his incumbancy, when the R you ignore may be one of the men who will help move the R party rightward.

4. It will require somewhat of a miracle to keep the Dems from winning the presidency in '08. This is our last chance for many years to have any real effect on the makeup of the Supreme court. A Dem. Senate will prevent any hope of a rightward direction on the court, so much so I am surprised that the Dems haven't pressed this more in their campaigns. Right now, we are a court-ocracy, and that will remain so for the forseeable future if Dems win the Senate. The court might change in a favorable direction if R's keep the Senate.

5. As I see it, this election will have consequences far into the future. We conservatives have scratched and clawed our way to where we are, and we must not stay home in a huff simply because we are not scratching and clawing at as quick a pace as we might want. Sometimes, the best we can do is slow down the pace of reversal. But we must never give the field to the enemy. And right now, the Dems are the enemy.

laff phylo
"Besides, any employer who is paying less than $7.25 an hour ought to be ashamed of themselves."

Next line reads:
"6 Republican arrogance and hubris"

You mean like the arrogance of telling a man who started a business what he can pay his employees? You know the ones who are free to work anywhere they wish?

Voting requirements
Oldcon1 sez: "but that's what we enemies of the republic do - try to make sure everyone who wants to vote can."

OC1-that's the problem - some of those who WANT to vote aren't necessarily legally SUPPOSED to vote! Citizenship should be proved to register, and photo ID should be required to vote.

Laura Root

Just a clarification
I always hear about Bush increasing spending, the deficit and tax breaks for the rich. First, Bushe’s spending was directly related to 9/11 and the expenses associated with arming the military and establishing homeland security. The only discressionary social spending he's done was to appease liberals and to seek a compromise.
Second, the deficit is in line, as a percentage of GDP, with historical norms. I realize that to those who struggled to complete the 12th grade this whole percentage thing might present a challenge.
Third, People who make between 50k and 500k pay for everything in this country. Taxing the pants off those people is immoral and unfair. Some hard working guy making 300k and paying 120k in taxes is carrying the load for everyone making 27k and paying nothing. Ironically , politicians rape those people then insult them buy saying they don't pay their fair share. This disgraceful lie may thrill Joe six pack but is a cheap liberal trick to get votes from the millions who pay very little in taxes and resent everyone who is financially successful

one more thing
I forgot to mention in my previous post: I have noticed that several who plan to stay home on election day have referenced Bush's policies. Even if you don't like what Bush has done, there is no way you can punish him this election cycle...he is not running for office! If you think that you can punish him by handing him a hostile congress, keep in mind that such a move would also punish us!

Really?
1. Judges, Really?

Is that the reason I should vote to keep these spineless jellyfish in office? Was that because of the wise, and principled stance they all took when the last judges were appointed? Harriet Miers was their FIRST choice - not a backup candidate. I wonder why? Could it be she was a "WOMAN", and NOT because she was the best candidate? Was it politically expedient to nominate her, so Democrats would like her better? Did the wonderful Congress jump up and scream about her nomination? NO! They said be quiet to those of us who objected, just as YOU are now saying our objections to them must be suppressed, and we must now vote for them with our nose plugs on.

What about all the judges that have ALREADY been nominated - AND NOT PASSED? These sissies couldn't even muster enough guts to confirm John Bolton to the UN. What makes you think they will EVER be able to confirm ANY Judges?! If they had any gumption at all, they would put a stop to all this bull from the Democrats, and vote, but they won't, because the Democrats would not like it, and god knows we don't want to ever offend a Democrat!

As to Justice Stevens, He has already said he will not voluntarily step down while Bush is in office, and even if he dies tomorrow, the Dems will have no problem holding off the confirmation until after 08. Haven't you been watching? Pay attention. RINO's won't stand up against the threat of a filibuster. THANKS, JOHN McCAIN!!! I can't WAIT for you to be my president !!!

2. Terrorists don't need Democrats to win to know they're winning the war for US public opinion. The Republicans are in control of the entire government right now, and I can point to instance after instance of limp wristed prosecution of the war, and incessant hand wringing over hurting the sensibilities of Muslims and their terrorist brethren. How will any of that change, except by degree, with Democrats in Office?

3. The possibility of endless investigations, and even prosecution... POSSIBILITY?? What "Possible"? They're already in full swing, with soldiers already in jail, and who knows how many more on the slate? As usual, the RINO's in congress immediately fight to see who can condemn them first over ANY hint of an accusation, and with the most fervor, LONG before there's any actual PROOF of wrongdoing. HOW will that be different under the Dems?

4. Democrats will raise taxes and to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire. And this is different from what the RINO's will do, HOW? These gutless wonders will not stand up to the Dems, no matter what, and until they go, it won't matter who controls Congress. Those Tax cuts are out, no matter who wins in 06.

5. Immigration - workplace penalties and construction of 700 miles of border fence. Sounds Great, doesn't it? TOO bad they lied, and now have voted AGAINST funding that very same Fence they voted For! That's what the RINOs did. What difference does it make what the Democrats would do, since the Republicans are going to do the EXACT same thing, but just lie to us while they do it? ALL the congress wants Amnesty for Illegals, and if you don't believe it, just look at the way things have been going for the last 40 years, and ask if you really think it's going to change now - By electing the SAME exact people who let it get this way to begin with?

6. Framing the Debate. Yeah, who wants "peace, partying and rock n’ roll."? Sounds awful! Last I knew, Republicans were for all that, too. It's the multiculturalism, and political correctness that is at issue, and when was the last time you heard of a Republican who was not actively pandering to those who believe in all that crap? Whether they "really" believe it's racist to ask Cynthia McKinney if she has a badge before entering the Congress, or if they just keep quiet while the Cop takes a hit for asking her, the end result is the same. I didn't hear any RINOs weigh in on that one, did you? The silence was deafening, as it is any time there is a charge of Racism. Katrina, anyone?

7. When a political party gets thrashed at the polls, it inevitable moves to the center. That might be true if they believed we all ran out and voted Democrat - because we believed in what they put forth, but my refusal to vote for "anyone" will be a clear message to them, that they better recall who sent them to Washington. It is precisely BECAUSE they are all ALREADY in the lefty center, that I am not voting. They can't possibly go any further left, and still run as a Republican.

8. Losing Structural Advantages. Ooooh - Scary! It is precisely BECAUSE we can NEVER unseat an incumbent RINO that we MUST allow a Democrat to win this time, so someone with backbone can run in 08. If the same old RINO's win now, we will NEVER get them out, and we really can't risk a sit-out in '08.

I strongly urge you to consider NOT voting for Congress this time. I have thought it through, and while I hate that this is my only option, I will vote, but not for Congress. I will be leaving those questions blank on my ballot. I will NOT vote for a Democrat, as that would send the absolute wrong message. I am not voting for any of those idiots, I am withholding my vote until a real Republican (Not a RINO) runs for office in my state. If your state is already in posession of a "real" Republican, then I urge you to vote for him. But all I ask, is BE SURE! Know how he voted, not what he said in his speeches. My guys talked a good game, but when the votes came in, they were on the wrong side of the issue, way too many times.

Illegal immigration was the biggest lie, and I believe it will destroy this country. I will not forget the ones who helped get them amnesty.

Amen, amen, amen
I cannot imagine what anyone thinks would be gained by not voting. It might be like sticking your finger in somebody's eye because you disagree with them, it might make you feel better for a moment. They you have to pay and pay dearly for the doctor bills to fix it.
We ahve already seen that while Dems want all Repulicans kicked out because Foley was a sleaze, they elevate and protect their own sleazes. The fact that unlike a Dem Foley is gone is not enough, they think we need to get rid of the rest of the Republicans too for some reason. Well to give them more power over our lives.
Reforms are needed and it needs to start with term limits.

Its all been said before...
I see two kinds of posters here...those who will hold the Republican party responsible for its failure to perform, and those very fearful of loseing power...but not fearful enough to change themselves...thats the duty of the other guy, and he (read conservative) better do it or I'm gonna be real real mad and tell on you. Dirty guy you. Can't you see you MUST vote Republican? Are you conservatives blind? What good are your priciples if I have to lose power because of them? Aren't you afraid of the bogey man? Remember, if I lose power Nasty Pelosi will get you. Wouldn't you rather have my liberalism than hers?

Come on now...take your fight to the primaries, not in the general. Sure..its true...We, the party elite liberal types will attack any conservative that tries to challange a liberal in the primaries...see, we did it in ;04 for Specter, this year for Chaffee...thats how we oust conservatives and grow our liberal base...but thats where you are to go...GOT IT...dirty guy you!

Rep/Dem impact on illegal immigration
If you think that we have too many illegal aliens in the country _and_ want to keep more from coming in, as well as decreasing the swollen number of new immigrants allowed in every year, I recommend two things -
#1 go to this website: http://www.numbersusa.com
#2 vote Republican - yes, I know that many Repubs have been voting for amnesty - or whatever the politically correct word/phrase for it is now - but check your how-Congress-voted websites and/or how-the-Senate-voted websites, and tell me if you can find a Democrat who voted Against amnesty. Particularly in the Senate, if you find such a Democrat, then see if they're up for re-election this year (I bet they are).

Ok, so the Republicans are a bit shaky on this issue: would you rather have one or both Houses controlled by the Democrats who are _firmly_ going the wrong way?

Zealots

.....pitbull...

.....the Libs on this site are zealots...that is why they post on a conservative site...they do not respond to facts, logic or reason...they are either mind numbed robots or ideologues who see socialism as the ultimate Utopia...with them in charge of course.....COLOSSUS

Surrender to libs??
Never...it was a parody of much I see posted by the 'hold your nose vote Republican' bunch. Sorry if it was to deep.

Elections
I am an optimist about the upcoming elections. I believe that conservatives know the score right now and just how the game would end if the liberals scored a last minute game-ending touchdown. While public opinion favors Democrats this election cycle, let us remember that same public opinion is orchestrated via the mainline media. If you want to talk about whom to trust, I suggest you look elsewhere than the talking heads--even the conservative ones. Look at the robust economy and the fact that we have not had another attack since 9/11. I agree with Medved's proposed scenario and I will not stay home on election day.

This time I have to agree...
...with Mike. With all due respect to BrianR and others, a loss in November may vey well be one that the GOP cannot afford. Since everyone is so big on looking to history for examples, look at what happened in the 1950s. The GOP was content to take a loss in the Congressional elections because there was a sense that the GOP would ride Eisenhowers coattails back to power in the Congress. Forty years later it took Newt Gingrich and the Contract with America to finally wrest control back from the Democrats. What is there to inform the belief that a loss on November 7 is one that the GOP could quickly rebound from? Can we afford another 40 years of wandering in the political wilderness, waiting for another Moses to lead us back to the Promised Land?

If you believe that the country can truly afford to hand control of the government over to the Democrats, and the nation will be the better for it by all means stay home. But when we are locked out of decision making and the country starts to slide into the abyss that the Dems will almost definitely lead us to, do not complain about it. Look yourselves in the mirror and remeber that you were so concerned with punishing your own that you allowed the nightmare to become the reality.

If there's so much at stake?
"Those who advocate non-participation in this crucial election don’t just call for conservative punishment and defeat. Whether they like it or not, they pave the way for leftist victory. Frankly, America deserves better."

My question is this: If there's so much at stake, why didn't the Republicans listen to their base? Are you suggesting that we haven't been vocal about what we want? How about immigration and sealing the borders? Americans of BOTH parties overwhelmingly support sealing the borders.

If the Republicans were really concerned with "Speaker Pelosi", Supreme Court judges, etc, etc, then they would have listened to their base and done their frickin' jobs!!!

But they screwed us over instead, and now are trying to guilt/scare us into sending them back for another round of the same old crap. No thanks. If Democrats take the house and/or Senate, it will be the Republicans fault, and no one elses.

I do love this logic though:
If you vote them out, they will think that you wanted them to be more "centrist", ie- liberal. If you retain them, then they will think that you want more of the same, and continue along as before.

I say vote them out. If they are stupid enough to try running on a more liberal platform, then a) they aren't listening and b) they'll lose again. Sooner or later they will have to realize that what we want are CONSERVATIVES. When they figure that out, then they will start winning again. Till then, do you really want them in power anyway?

oldcon, old lib plant......
If the idea of speaker/president Pelosi not only doesn't scare you, but also seems refreshing to you, you are not an old con. You were never a con. You are a lib pretending to be an old con to give the false impression that "real" conservatives think Pelosi as speaker/president is a better prospect than allowing the current reps to stay in power. Real conservatives may be fed up with the current crop of reps, but they also realize that the radically leftist democrats cannot be allowed to run our nation in a time of war and cultural change.

RE: Buck2
1) What you call "legislating from the bench", the rest of the (intelligent) world calls "following the letter and intent of the US Constitution".

2) Whom do YOU think Osama bin Laden would vote for? The party that wants him DEAD, or the party who is willing to let him run rampant in the world?

3) The courts have consistently maintained that the wire taps are legal, and that no warrant is needed. You need to review the Constitution (you know, that document you wish didn't exist) and pay close attention to the part where it prohibits ONLY "unreasonable" searches and seizures. Only a freaking moron would think that tapping the phone line of someone whose name appears on OBL's Rolodex is "unreasonable".

4) The "deficit" is already paid for.

5) While Senate Republicans and the president (unfortunately) seem to think illegals raping and murdering US citizens is just fine, only House Republicans think otherwise. It is a FACT that every single Democrat at the national level thinks we don't need a border.

6) Need I remind you of Reid, Jefferson, Pelosi, Kennedy (both Patrick and Fat Teddy), Leahy, and others to point out that the worst you can come up with on Repubilcans is still one step above the least of Democrat crimes?

7) You mean moderates like Olympia Snow, Lincoln Chafee, Susan Collins, John McCain, and Arlen Specter? And, say, where are all those Democrat moderates? You can't even claim Leiberman is a Democrat moderate any more because you booted him from the party. "Moderate" for Democrats, according to the Associated Press, is Hillary freakin' Clinton and Barbara "Left of Lenin" Boxer.

8) Whatever.

Stay home? Or vote?
Those decisions have long been made by each of us and neither side, no matter how shrill, is going to change the mind of the other. We each do what we think is best and in the final analysis, we each see what we consider to be best those things that satisfy our own needs. For the Republican party elites and liberal types, keeping power is the name of the game. For Republican and other conservatives its about principles...one of which is that loyalty goes both ways...if one wants the loyalty at the poll one must reciprocate, as they (Republicans) lead we conservatives to believe they would. Through 5 cycles now they have been given our vote and the benefit of the doubt. That has GOT to stop somewhere, and now is better than then.

BOTOX is a deadly poison, yet many use it to remove wrinkles proving that a little poison isn't necessarily fatal nor is a little Democrat liberalism if it aids in removing the wrinkles now killing the Republican body politic. True, the patient may die, but without the effort to cleanse it, it will do that anyway.

RE: Phylo
Trivia question: When was the last time a Demcoratic controlled congress had a balanced budget?

Remember Santorum supporting Specter...
When even a conservative, say, Rick Santorum supporting Specter, or Bush supporting Chafee, can't be counted on to support good conservatives running against RINOs, we know we are in trouble and we might as well start over.

Conservatives cannot gain a foothold in the current porkridden environment. We either have to start a new party (less preferable, but an option) or force our straying GOOP [sic] to come home.

The next two years are a perfect opportunity to do just that, because nothing much of import is going to happen.

1. With Iraq and islamofacsisterrorism we will pretty much stay the course (which is to say, lose);

2. Neither Stevens nor Ginsburg will retire from SCOTUS;

3. The '03 tax cuts will NOT be extended in a narrowly GOP house or under Pelosi;

4. The death tax will NOT be repealed.

Why not use this lamest duck next two years, instead of incenting more of the same/tame, to reconfigure and reenergize the Republican Party, turning us from GOOP to GNP - Grand New Party. (Also, please note the play on words, alluding to economic growth.)

I will be voting for conservative Reps this year and abstaining from the worst earmarkers, e.g., Conrad Burns.

NEOCON
As soon as a poster trots out the old "neocon" label, you know they are a raving lefty who should not be taken seriously.

Tim....not much of import?
I'd say the endless investigations and impeachment hearings that the dems will hoist on us if they win will be something of at least moderate import, wouldn't you? It was bad enough the GOP forced clinton to keep his eye off the ball back in the 90's.....to support the dems doing the same in a time of open warfare is insanity.

Reasons
There are very few reasons to vote Republican in this election. However, there are two very important potential reasons to do so. First, without a GOP House block, George Bush and the Senate might be able to pass their immigration amnesty bill. Second, in case a Supreme Court justice dies or retires, a Republican majority would be useful in the Senate. Otherwise, I would say that George W. Bush deserves the humiliation of losing congress for his party.

That said, I will be voting for Michael Steele in his quest for the Maryland Senate but I expect him to lose by about five points. As both Ehrlich and O'Malley are pro-abortion, neither will receive my vote for governor. Ehrlich most likely will be retired on election day. As my congressman, Wayne Gilchrest (R), is safe for re-election, I will not vote for him as he is a liberal on many issues- abortion, gun rights, taxes.

These are good points...
Good morning, I am really enjoying the debate that this article has brought up. The "Old Conservatives" and/or others that think you should vote out of anger and frustration against the current administration. It's time to check your morals logically, without the fuel of emotions. I gladly suggest that everyone take this very important time and reflect on the facts, and not the political ads or information.

Yesterday, I added my first blog to Townhall, and since it pertains to this, perhaps you may find it of interest:

http://usabeliever.townhall.com

And I'll say this - I've fought my personal battles on who I would vote for in elections since I have come of age to vote, but I try very, VERY hard to follow the process that I mention every time. And usually, that steers me towards Republicans. I'll post another blog today with the reason why, if time allows.

Thank you for your time.

Not a plant
To anyone who thinks I am a Liberal plant, think again.

I never even mentioned Bush, as he is not running for anything, and can never be elected as President again.

The fact that I have never mentioned Bush seems like enough to clear me of the charges, since no card carrying member of the Democrat party seems to be able to utter a complete sentence without bringing him up, but just for the record, I am more a Libertarian (absent the desire for legalized drugs and sexual deviations), and would like nothing better than to have a strictly constitutional government.

I have voted straight Republican since Reagan ran against Carter, and frequently with my nose plugs on, so I am not unfamiliar with the concept.

That said, however, I do believe this time is different. I do believe it matters more this time, than ever before in my lifetime. Illegals are flooding us in unprecedented numbers, and voting in our elections - WITH HELP from our elected officials!!!

Terrorists are plotting our downfall from all over the world, including on our own soil - WITH HELP from our elected officials!!!

If you believe that I am wrong on either count, please tell me when the last immigration raid was held at your place of employment, or the last time you saw a news report of illegals running for the hills, as the INS busted in on their employer.

Are you even asked to show a driver's license or picture ID to vote? I'm not.

US colleges are importing Terrorists to speak and attend classes at Harvard and Princeton, and the US government surely knows they are there. Why in the HECK aren't they doing something about it?

That's our government at work! Great, aren't they? Thank goodness the Republicans are in charge of our security. We might be in danger, otherwise.

If you don't believe me, read comments from Ziggy and Tim. I don't believe we are all "Liberal plants", and since none of us is boosting a Democrat position, and only saying that the current crop of Republicans is bringing this country down, I don't even believe there is any cause for chastisement.

Read what is said, and understand why it's being said, and you just might learn something. Medved is within his rights to state his reasons why he will vote, and this forum was put in place to allow us to state our reasons why we agree, or disagree with him. No need for name-calling, regardless of your position.

Try a little understanding, and just agree to disagree. This matters, and rants and name calling discredit your ideas. That is the true Democrat way to argue - Just ignore arguments, and call names.

Correction
Since people like things clarified, I think I should clarify the end of the first paragraph: "..not the political ads or information."

If you do check out the blog, you'll see that I mention that MSM media and news sources are not 100% fact. (This is what I mean by information as listed above.) Reason? It's presented by a human, and no matter how you try to say it, human is not perfect. Therefore, there is some translation on it. So if they cite a source, check the source. Read the full details as much as you can on what you can. The devil's in the details - and quite honestly, too many times the MSM and political ads - on both sides - will try to push their points, and not the facts and details that prove the facts.

It still puts me where I stand usually, which is on the right. Again, if you read the blog, you'll see that my personal values and morals come first. Anyone that would sacrifice themselves - their values and morals - to "get even" with an administration that they feel has wronged them - you're at risk of losing more than your government... you risk losing yourself.

Thank you, again, for your time.

Can't Win By Losing...
Because you can't argue with success.

If the Dems win, they will be successful. Success is what is emulated, not failure. Kos would be a success. Pelosi would be a success. the MSM would be a success. Hating on Bush for everything he does and everything he doesn't do would be a success. Talking down to evangelicals would be a success. Encouraging America's enemies would be a success. Impeaching Bush would be a success-----and success is what Joe Lieberman, Zell Miller, and other moderate Democrats would be completely unable to argue with in the Democratic Party.

If you want to punish the GOP so badly, why can't you wait until the alternative is something semi-acceptable? If the Dems lose this time, this would be what moderates in the Democratic Party need to give the Sorosbots the heave-ho, and have as opponents to the RINOS Democrats who won't drive this country off the cliff.

And another thing.....
....anybody who uses "security" and Pelosi in the same sentence is a loon and anyone who drags out the old "top 1%" canard in justifying tax hikes is an idiot.

Pogue Out.

How to throw away a majority.

No, they are much worse. But again, if the Republican leadership, including the President really gave a crap about the country, you'd think they would do whatever it takes to maintain control, not throw it away by disrespecting their base.

And that's EXACTLY what they have done for the last 6 years. Sorry, if the Republicans want my vote, they are going to have to earn it by following the CONSERVATIVE principles they said they would push. Otherwise, I'm no better than the Klinton Kool-aid drinkers we all despise.

KM is a liberal plant.
You support democratic positions on issues by supporting giving them control of congress to teach the right a lesson.

Flagwaver: one flaw in your analogy
The Democrat party of the 50s was more conservative than the Republican party of today.

As a matter of fact, it kind of proves my point, because as they maintained power over the ensuing 40 years in Congress, they drifted ever-leftward, a path that the current Repub party seems to be following.

It seems to bear out Acton's "absolute power" quote. Certainly Tytler's on the "largesse of the treasury".

"Security" and Bush?
Pogue_Mahone wrote:

And anyone who uses "security" and Bush in the same sentence is a loon too. Like our borders are stopping terrorists from getting in our country??? Like he forgot to close the door 5 years after 9/11???

Loon.....
Bush ain't perfect, but he kills radical islamics dead(not all of them, but more than the dems would). Pelosi would hug them and tell them we are sorry for being so evil.

The problem with your argument, rockman, is that the only alternative to the disappointing reps is the extremist lilly livered leftist dems. Anyone who can get past that reality when deciding to punish the reps for not being conservative enough is not thinking clearly.

I repeat again, anyone who can seriously mention Pelosi and security in the same sentence is a loon. You betray your own point whenever you put the focus on that San Fransisco botox liberal.

Have you ever considered...
Pogue_Mahone wrote:

"The problem with your argument, rockman, is that the only alternative to the disappointing reps is the extremist lilly livered leftist dems."

Have you ever considered that the Republicans are taking advantage of that very fact? Have you ever considered that this fact could be by design?

If that is the standard for keeping your vote, then it no wonder that the Republicans of today are no better than the Democrats of the 50's. All they have to do is PROMISE to be good conservatives, but only actually PERFORM just slightly to the right of the Democrats. We'll complain and moan, but then vote them back in because the alternative is worse.

Tell me, how/when will this situation EVER change? IT WON'T!!! The Dems will ALWAYS be to the left of Republicans and will ALWAYS be the greater of the 2 evils. There's no way that this is lost on the Republicans, and I believe they are simply taking advantage of it, while using the war as another scare tactic (why are our borders open if we are in such danger? Answer me that one!!).

And as long as people like you keep voting for the Republicans, nothing will ever change. They'll continue to string us along with their promises before the election, but always come up with excuses why they couldn't quite get stuff done. Meanwhile, they will rape the treasury for them and their buddies just as surely as the Democrats would. But what is starting to scare me more is how the President is destroying our civil rights in the name of "security", despite leaving our borders wide open. That just doesn't add up.

Then what explains the leftword movement of the Democrats? They've been trounced in recent elections and they keep getting more and more socialist.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it.

If the "conservative" base doesn't vote for Republicans this cycle, it's because they have been betrayed and aren't going to reward betrayal.

Then, it behooves the Republicans to return to their base's positions -- the most important being: *LIMITED GOVERNMENT*.

I'm from Missouri and will be voting Libertarian.

Minimum Wage
What's all this crap about the federal minimum wage anyway?

Why do the dems need someone in Washington to raise the minimum wage in their own state? If you're so passionate about it, call your state legislator, and get San Fran Nan off of my TV complaining about it. Turning this into a federal issue is nonsense.

Here's how I see it. Where I live, the STATE minimum wage is $7.75 an hour, well above what the dimmos want to make the federal minimum.

My state is fairly expensive to live in, since it is a blue state and they tax you through the nose. So, even at the minimum, you're paying high taxes on it.

That being said, if we make poorer regions in the country, the ones where you can still buy a good sized house on 10 acres for under $50k (they do exist) raise their wages to the minimum, you will see lower end jobs dissappear because their economies cannot support the wages.

I actually have a friend in West Virginia that is hoping the minimum wage goes up. I told him to be careful what he wishes for, since his employer may not be able to keep him at a higher minimum. He and his wife both make under $7 an hour, yet they own their own 5 bedroom house on 2 acres, have a fairly new car, and they dress and eat well without any government assistance. Part of the reason they moved there is because they couldn't make it by on his $12 an hour and her $11 an hour in California as well as they are doing in WV, not to mention they now live in a nice smaller town and don't need to worry about tweakers breaking into their garage or stealing their kids' bicycles off of the lawn like they did at their little $450k house in California.

The pricier places in this country already have higher wages. The minimum wage issue is just liberal political demo-gogue, and they already voted against it anyway. So get off of it!

political corruption
Obviously, mention this phrase now and everybody immediately thinks of Congressman Foley.

Did you know that Republicans in the House imposed a rule on themselves a long time ago, that any of them who is indicted - essentially, accused, _not_ yet _convicted_, still innocent-until-proven-guilty-and-the-trial-hasn't-started-yet - they _must_ resign. Remember Tom DeLay? Remember how quickly he handed in his resignation when some liberal prosecutor served the papers on him? - and that prosecutor first accused him of something, got his grand jury to vote that there was enough evidence to convince them that DeLay did whatever it was in Texas back in 1998 (? did I get the year wrong? feel free to correct me on this point). Then a curious fact was uncovered: what Tom DeLay was accused of in that indictment wasn't illegal in Texas at the time he did it - in other words, it wasn't a crime.

The prosecutor impaneled another grand jury and accused DeLay of something else - but he couldn't convincec a majority of that grand jury, and they voted to let him go. The prosecutor had to impanel _another_ grand jury, and finally, he got the results he wanted. DeLay still hasn't been convicted, unless I missed a major pile of news items.

The Democrats have no such rule in the House, so when they're accused, they can stick around - the Main Stream Media will give them a pass.

Remember Gerry Studds - accused - and found guiilty - of sex with a (female) page? The Democrats had a big enough majority in the House that he didn't have to worry. After his little speech with a lame apology, he turned his back on the members of the House, and the Democrats gave him a standing ovation. Condemn him? Ummmm, I don't see how this adds up to anything like condemnation, punishment, or discipline of Gerry Studds.

Have you forgotten X-President "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton already? And what sort of discipline has the Democratic Party applied to him?

< spew alert!! > The msm? They call Clinton the "greatest President America ever had" < end spew alert >

Have you forgotten already?

Tell me again, how voting out Republicans and voting in Democrats will decrease corruption in government? I keep forgetting how this strategy works.

rockman & dan
rockman: the GOP did in fact lose touch with THEIR base...when they started listening to the Reaganites, Buchananites, and LIbertarians. People who call themselves "Conservatives", but refuse to admit to being "Republicans". Such double dealing, back stabbing, lack of loyalty is NOT the base of Republicans.

dan: you got it right. As I've said...Bush is like the man whose roof (9/11) fell and while he was trying to clean up the mess, he found pest had invading the foundation of the house (terrorists)...and just as he was fixing both, his kids got sick (Katrina) and his other kids, family, and so called friends condemn him for "not saving money" and "spending like a drunken sailor"...and then for good measure...his neighbors complain about his not fixing the hole in the fence that's been there for near a decade (immigration)...and everyone agrees that the man let the family (Conservatives) down for not being able to do all things.

Geez.

The one good thing that may come out of the "fanny wacking" the above groups want to deal the GOP is maybe the party really will get back to their base of ADULT, THINKING, REALISTIC REPUBLICANS.

And maybe Bush can go back to fighting just the terrorists and the Dems.

watch your step
celtic-dragon, I here ya. I take each issue seperately, and weight them accordingly, rather being brainwashed into what is supposedly the party line across the board. I then look at who would best serve the important issues at that time. Normally, this leaves me voting Republican. If you consider this "mushy", I really don't give a crap. Medveds article assumes everyone who has been voting Republican is of the same ilk, rather than, for example, the legions of fiscal conservative/socially liberals, or people supporting the Prez at a time of war. I hear this baloney all the time. A move toward the center a problem? Not for a lot of us.

Sanity 102: Good point!
I used to always be proud to call myself a Republican. It meant something then, a statement of principles most of which I endorsed. I campaigned for Nixon's re-election in Chicago, for Pete's sake!

It's only been in recent years I've taken to calling myself a conservative first, and a Republican a somewhat distant second.

Says something about the direction the party's taken.

America under attack
Bla, bla, bla. We are in a culture war against those who would love nothing more than to eradicate the already suffocating "idea" of the United States of America. The first and only thing on our minds should be the return of strict, "non-living document" constructionists, to the federal benches, and most importantly the Supreme Court. We must not waver from this goal. Only when we have a "super majority" on the highest court in the land should we begin to discuss ways to "improve" our "lesser of the two evils" party, or abandon it to start anew. The future of free people rests upon our convictions.

7 Reasons to NOT Vote Reublican
Oh the joy, the sheer joy, of seeing Republican elites and the White House chasing for those lost conservative votes, after years of ignoring the party base and insulting them with Congress' out-of-control spending, itsencouraging illegal immigration, the White House taking pro-affirmative action positions with the Supreme Court, the further federalizing of education, the increasing of agricultural subsidies, the botching of Katrina and Medicare drug prescription implementation, and then dismissing the party base with a sniff as intolerant or interlopers for daring to protest. Now the White House rushes to host talk show hosts at the Capitol so they'll dutifully reiterate the party line to listeners and begs wayward conservatives to come back. The poor treatment by Republican officials of their base should go down as one of the major political blunders of the century. I hope they lose big--that way, they may have to go out and get REAL jobs like the average peon and find out what it's like to work for a living. Goodbye and good riddance to all of them.

By the way, taxes have not gone down, as talk show hosts keep insisting. Any reduction in federal taxies is offset by the massive state and local fees and taxes implemented to pay for services to illegal aliens, something never mentioned by elite hosts not based in the Southwest. A special congratulations goes to all those talk show hossts NOT invited to the White House. It shows their independence, and they deserve special recognition for not taking part in the event.

Why Vote
Eight reasons conservative votes on November 7th don’t matter:

“… we can’t afford two years (or more) of leftist lunacy in Congress…” What exactly would you call the last 10 years? I believe you have not come to grasp with the severity of the problem. I am a conservative. As such I believe you do not pretend to give a ‘tax cut’ to the millions while adding the cost of those cuts, along with your leftist programs, to the long term debt. All the while putting enough ‘loop holes’ in the tax law that the wealthiest pay less, as a percentage, than I do. All the while millions more have been bought with handouts and long term commitments on future generations. Congress as currently operating, (No matter the party) clearly is dysfunctional. There are no conservatives in Washington or in politics for that matter. It’s only a matter of time before the inevitable fall of the empire.
Herewith, eight concrete reminders of why your participation doesn’t matter:

1. Judges. The Supremes have continuously and more frequently cited foreign law to make decisions about Americans. Down fall is certain so who goes down doesn’t matter.
“Whatever our complaints about other aspects of the Bush record, his judicial nominations have been incontestably superb.” You sure about that? Let’s wait a few years then do a satisfaction survey.

2. Encouraging the Enemy. “The only way to win wars is to convince your adversaries that further resistance is useless. Democratic victories in the House and/or Senate would help persuade Islamo-Nazi terrorists that they are, in fact, winning the war for US public opinion.” Well, if they are winning, they are winning. Democrats don’t control opinion any more than republicans do. After 60 years of the bomb, no one seems convinced they can’t win. Why again are we in this war? To keep the terrorist occupied somewhere besides here. Shall we continue forever?

3. Security. The biggest threats to our security are: The President; Congress (both houses); University Elite; and the ignorant (public schooled) masses.

4. The Economy. “There’s no doubt that Democrats will raise taxes.” Actually there’s no doubt republicans will too. The difference is the republicans will hide it somewhere else. Did you know that for years the price of diesel fuel was at or below the price of regular grade gas? Now it is fifty cents higher. Why? My theory is, to hide the cost from the ignorant masses. By charging more for diesel which few use, we shift the cost to truckers who charge more to deliver and the price of goods will inevitably go up. No one will care because they don’t notice that penny or two on each item like they do ten or fifteen cents on a gallon of gas. And it comes right at election time. How convenient.

5. Immigration. What a bunch of baloney Mr. Medved. No true conservative likes the Bush approach to immigration. There were already enough laws on the books to deal with the problem. Just because the politician’s hands have been slapped and they pretend they will do something, the fact is they have sat on their fat asses while Rome burns. There was already a way for immigrants to come here legally. “enforcement first?”. Is that the sugar that’s supposed to make the pill bearable? If McCain is the best they have to offer, what’s the point?

6. Framing the Debate. “It’s true that public opinion shapes elections, but elections also shape public opinion.” If the latter is true, it’s no wonder we are in deep cow pies. I believe you are right however as past elections have proven to me that the system is futile.
“Consider the impact of the strong showing by religious conservatives in 2004: for the last two years, Democrats have been trying to figure out how to make themselves sound more “spiritual” while commentators of every stripe pay new attention to values voters.” But the fact is that the religious right who think are disgusted with the republicans.

7. Losing Control of the Party. “When a political party gets thrashed at the polls, it never moves in a rightward (or leftward) direction: it inevitable moves to the center.” Such a move by republicans would be an improvement. When Goldwater found himself swamped by Lyndon Johnson in ’64, the GOP didn’t go back to strong conservative principles: it embraced the “centrist” (and deal cutter) Richard Nixon. And look what we got. Even so, Nixon was more conservative than GWB.

8. Losing Structural Advantages. These advantages need to go. We pay fulltime wages for part-time work. That way the have plenty of time to steal from us.

ziggy
"BOTOX is a deadly poison, yet many use it to remove wrinkles proving that a little poison isn't necessarily fatal nor is a little Democrat liberalism if it aids in removing the wrinkles now killing the Republican body politic. True, the patient may die, but without the effort to cleanse it, it will do that anyway."

I agree completely, yet I come to a different conclusion: the wrinkles - strike that; make it "decay" - are starting to kill some parts of the body politic (read: Blue States, Hollywood, et al). The primary cause/promoter of what's causing the decay (as in can't have any mention of God in a public place, especially public schools; must permit gay marriage; must keep Abortion free, safe, and legal) is the Democratic Party. Shall we evict Republicans (some of them being the healthy tissue, although the distinction between Democrats and RINOs here is lost on me) to teach them that they should be different from the gangrene (the Democrats, with VERY few exceptions, and some RINOs)?

I've no medical degree, but even I know that when a patient with a fair complexion comes in with one foot turned all black, stinking, smelling like rotting meat, and red streaks running up the leg from there, the treatment required - absolutely necessary, no other options - is to cut off the foot, and probably part of the leg as well, AND administer antibiotics to kill any remaining bacteria. If this is not done, and done quickly, the patient will die. In this analogy, the Democrats are the rotting flesh, and their acceptance of homosexuality, promiscuous sex, support for abortion, insistence on raising taxes, micromanaging business (like raising the minimum wage) are the bacteria. Putting the foot on some kind of life support and putting the patient with his other leg in a medieval torture rack to teach him a lesson will not help.

(I said "a patient with a fair complexion" only because the color contrast makes it easier to see, than if the patient has a very dark complexion. The condition is equally deadly, and requires the same treament, regardless of race.)

"Judges: Scalia has shown a proclivity to legislate from the bench. I do not hear any complaints in town hall to this approach, even though there are several complaints about liberal legislating from the bench. I think a "good" judge is more important than a moderate or left leaning judge or a neo-con judge."

This ridiculous comment hardly deserves a comment or a rebuttal. If you consider his stand legislating from the bench, what do you call the decision in Kelo v. City of New London?

No one, left wing liberals included, who have any constitutional law expertise, would EVER accuse Scalia of "legislating from the bench." Not believing the Constitution is a "living document" (read: we can interpret however we want) does not make you a judge that legislates from the bench.

And since you mentioned it, what are your qualifications for a "good" judge? I'd love to hear those and some examples, if you don't mind.

Hustler Downfall Free Fall
Hi Hustler, I can get cynical about our culture, both parties, and societal decay, corruption, and destruction. My understanding of Scripture prevents me from being a short or medium term triumphalist and I'm a pessimist (we all call ourselves 'realists', LOL) by wiring. So I share some of your frustrations.

My understanding of Scripture in Matthew 5 about being light and salt, affect my actions personally and in the public square. One of the role of salt was to bring out the good taste in food and life and culture (or so it seems to me). But another role of salt is to SLOW the RATE OF corruption and decay in meat, and culture. So...I do not mind if I'm short or medium term not so prevailing if I'm faithful and part of being faithful is slowing down the rate of societal decay when we can.

Unless you have some special revelation to the contrary indicating that God has departed and is not extending grace and not utilizing His people as light and salt anymore, and that now He is using them for revolution, anarchy, and such, I say, re-read Medved and be involved supporting the candidates that are the greater good or lesser evil to slow the rate of social corruption. Your comment seems to be endorsing the turn of moral down turn and down fall into a free fall. It is easy to give up, but I'm not sure you want to be living in a culture that is unrestrained in its evil. King David said he'd rather endure the just wrath of God than the wrath of man. Hang in there, Hustler.

Reason #1
Republicans have not shown they can do much while running all branches of the government. That may be a function (in my opinion) of their lack of leadership in Congress. However, all things equal, reason #1 is enough for me. I don't want to imagine what sort of justices would be approved by the Senate with a democratic majority. Folks like Souter and the like, I'm sure. More than anything else, that is why I'd like to see them at least retain control of the Senate. While they are at it, they need a leader in the Senate (now that Frist has retired) who will LEAD.

Actually there are nine reasons
The ninth reason for republicans voting this cycle is imagine having to listen to r2_d2, Kimberly, Phylo, Donaldd and the rest of the kooks constantly crowing about thier victory.

If they take more than one seat they will follow their marching orders and call it a landslide victory, but to have to listen to them if they do take the house will be unbearable.

Two Bucks
Says Bush v Gore is legislating from the bench by Scalia. Hmmm Have you ever read it? On whether the recount was right, only Souter and Bryer thought it was. Even Ginsburg said it was improper. As for whether to end the process or continue the litigation, Ginsburg, Bryer, Stevens, and Souter said it should, the others said not. And the grounds for Ginsbnurg and Stevens, even though they agreed with the others, the Supreme Court should not have taken the case. Only 2 said they thought the decision was wrong. And you call that legislating from the bench. WOW!

Then warrants again. Lets take this slow. Lets pretend you are a detective at the OJ Simpson estate. You see a bloody fingerprint on a car door that gives you reasonable cause and enter the estate without a warrant. And you know what? That was upheld. After all, he had reasonable cause.

Dems cry that we should do post facto warrants. Why? The only purpose of that is to supress improperly gained information. So, if we learn about a planned anthrax attack, we will supress that for some reason? If we learn nothing, what do we need to supress?

This is all just silly partisan posturing.

Philo
Hate to be one of those grammar/spelling nit pickers, but when you adopt a holier-than-thou pseudo-intellectual tone, you should at least spell check. Habeas corpus, not habeus corpus. (Habeas is subjunctive present 2nd person singular of habere, to have. "Habeas corpus" meaning "you may have the body".)

It does not actually ensure the right to a fair trial, either. It ensures the right to speedy disposition of a case, nothing about fairness, nor even a trial. All it ensures is that you won't be held indefinitely without some form of legal disposition of your case. For example, if you are picked up for parole violation and then ask for a writ of habeas corpus, the court will rule you are justifiably detained as parole violation is an administrative, not a judicial matter, and no additional trial is needed. (In general, that is. Obviosuly there are times when parole violation may require adjudication.)

Just wanted to correct these two little points.

And yes, I made a typographical error
And after criticizing spelling, it was inevitable I would make a typographical error of my own. "Obviosuly" should be "obviously".

When the constitution mentions "people," isn't it referring to United States citizens?

Phylo
Check the Nine-Eleven Commission Report. It did find that there were contacts between Iraq and Al-Quida.

Question.
One part of a recent CNN program dealt with the cost of a college education. Why aren't the complainers also pointing a finger at the cause of the increasing cost of education -- the colleges and universities.

Why are you so worried about these alleged prisoners being held in Syria when we have eight Marines at Camp Pendleton being held as if they were already guilty and dishonorable men like Murtha ganging up on them? It is fine to be concerned with human rights issues around the globe, but it shows you to be disingenious when you side with most Liberals in fretting as to the conditions enemy combatants are held in rather than your own soldiers who give you freedom to have time to sit on your computer and post inane comments.

My viewpoint is that if we cant take 10 years of the Republican Congress and 6 years Bush as president we as a country cant take anything.
the incompetence, corruption and dim-witted
"leadership" of the above has actually already done the damage columnist are predicting should dems take over.

Ziggy
The big ASSumption you're making is that Republicans will move right if they lose. They are just as likely to move left, and that turns into a winning strategy for them, you will be permanently disenfranchised.

Everyone, calm down...
The Republicans will retain their powers...the democrats are just starting their whinning a bit early...making sure that when the Republicans win, then will get a jump start on the headlines...it will be "Repbulican Steal Votes," again and there will be endless recounts and lawsuits...enough to make a sane woman sick....this is what all the meally mouthed argueing is about. The dems just want to be sure that everyone knows they were 'robbed' again. They are tiresome, at best, and need to just do the jobs they were elected to and stop the nonsense....the people will have their say in a few weeks...AND THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE AFRAID OF!
Someone, send my regards to Carvill and Begalla while you're at it....;-)

Rose
I made it up, but if you think about it, it must be what Buck2 meant.

Who else would care about him reading some liberal's book?

Sandy's right
Polls are important tools that can help analyze trends and attitudes, but they can be very wrong. Remember the exit poll numbers in 2004 that had Kerry in the White House election-day afternoon? Conservatives WILL be out in force, regardless their motivation. The value voters will want to prevent Barney Frank from chairing anything save a meeting for NAMBLA. Fiscal conservatives will want their tax cuts retained. Moderates won't want to cut-and-run from Iraq/Afghanistan. The Republicans will have to put up or shut up when they hold on to both houses if they want to win in 2008. Enough of the rhetoric and promises and on with the Conservative agenda that Reagan instituted, Newt cultivated, and America desperately needs to hold on to.

Reason # 666 for Voting Republican
Every time a liberal is elected, a demon gets its wings.

MacZed
"Vote Republican, then write letter after letter expressing your anger over the possibility of a superhighway toll road flowing North from Mexico to Canada - Force the Repeal of NAFTA - Force the completion of a 2,000 mile Fence..."

The problem is that the only real power we possess is our ability to vote them in or out of office. If they know they'll get our votes however they legislate, in order to keep out the Big Bad Democrats, they'll keep on blithely voting as they please. You can write letters each day; it doesn't mean they won't be dispatched to File 13 and responded to with a standard form letter. You have to be willing to use your only big stick, a vote.

Since my congressman has consistently voted as a conservative, I'll vote for him next month. If he were a RINO, I'd leave that part of the ballot blank.

There are certain posters who will now assume that I'm a liberal plant. Oh, well, conservatives who don't blindly follow this administration are getting used to being called names. After opposing the Harriet Meiers nomination, we were called sexists by some in the administration. For opposing amnesty for illegal aliens, we've been called racists and redneck yahoos.

Art of the attack
Yeah, the way she suggested that Caroline might want to commit suicide the day after the election was really pleasant.

No, I don't ASSume...
if the party is removed from power the Republican party is going to move right as one R party dolt ASSumes I ASSume.

What I HOPE is that when they do the post election analysis of what happened and why they will correct their ways and set about doing the job they were sent to do by the ones who sent them. No one expects immediate results in toto, but we do expect immediate good faith effort be made on a prioritized list of agenda items to return our government to being a smaller, more responsive constitutional one.

Now, as to what I actually ASSume dear dolt is that the party will learn nothing...it will continue to be the stupid party resulting in a new banishment to the wilderness.

So let it be written, so let it be done

ziggy
Now tell me what you really think about me.

Torture and Release (T&R) would save lives, though.

Or, we could just outright enslave them until they willingly leave.

Btw - Ziggy
One man's hope, it seems, is another man's assumption. In that light, you proved my point.

For a GOP that is out of power in November, the center is a far larger field to harvest votes from than the far right that doesn't vote anyway.

Reaganite
"Yeah, the way she suggested that Caroline might want to commit suicide the day after the election was really pleasant."

I liked that one, too!

Worth considering
In choosing not to vote or to vote for a third party as punishment for a Republican party that did not totally toe the conservative philosophy is a vote for a Democrat victory.

Conservatism is broad in spectrum; some is socially so, some fiscally. With that reality, some conservative voters are likely to be disappointed somewhere along the line in any Congressional session. Rewarding Democrats for that disappointment seems counter-intuitive and very short-sighted.

Lessening the pool of Republicans in either house will make the persuasions of conservatives in either the Senate or the House of Representatives downright futile. Why handicap the terrific conservatives already on board?

With letters, calls, or emails to the editor or to other media and to the representative himself; with more sunshine in the new porkbusting sites; and with the support of conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation, pressure can be mounted on RINOS. They are more apt to listen to a Republican voter than will any Democrat who displaces them.

Focus on the glass half-full; don't toss the whole beverage in a fit of pique.

BTW laughingatyou must be somewhat nervous about the outcome of the general election because he is already planting suspicions about the reliability of electronic voting. Would that he were as supportive of the use of a picture ID at the polls.

In other words, Ziggy
Your decision not to vote could put McCain or Giulianni in power.

MacZed
"It is war. It is not pretty. It sucks. People die. Oh well."

C'est le guerre.

Or, as Coulter said, "Yeah, it's a war... they're shooting back".

How nice...
You can corecctly determine that when the constitution says 'people' it means 'people' not 'citizens', yet when convenient my 'hope' word morphes into your ASSumption word.

How nice for you!

BTW
I DIDN'T decide NOT to vote...

What I decided was to not SUPOORT any Republican candidate seeking a congressional office with my vote.

In actual fact, I HAVE voted! I DO live in a state which has state and local offices to fill and issues on the ballot to decide.

I didn't expect this one:
From TH:

What is your prediction for the November election?
Republicans lose House, keep senate (38)

Republican keep House, lose senate (4)

Republican keep both (166)

I voted for both. I'm not anywhere near sure, but I lay the greatest odds on us keeping both chambers.

Ziggy
That's nice, but we're talking about the Congress, and I am still led to believe by your comments that in the relevant conversation, you chose not to vote, or you voted against the Republicans.

To Quote myself"
"I DIDN'T decide NOT to vote...
What I decided was to not SUPOORT any Republican candidate seeking a congressional office with my vote."

You must have missed "What I decided was to not SUPOORT any Republican candidate seeking a congressional office"...

Congressional office means an office in congress...Is there more than one CONGRESS in our great country?

If not, then your 'Ziggy
That's nice, but we're talking about the Congress" doesn't make sense since I obviously directly addressed it.

Ziggy
Answer your own question, please. What other legislative bodies called "Congress" exist in the U.S.A.?

Ziggy
Just checked - I can't find any other Congresses in google. Google "Congress" and see what I mean.

Then google "Legislature" and you'll get a lot!

OK
NONE that I know of...to my knowledge state legislative bodies are called 'Legislatures"..its possible some state calls theirs something else, but to my knowledge none call theirs a congress. If you know for fact different, inform and correct my faulty knowledge and I'll apologize.

Now, I thought you'd ask the obvious "how did you vote then" or "did you vote for a Democrat" or something similar instead of assuming I must have done the dastardly deed of voting for a Dem. Let me be clear, its not that I wouldn't vote for a more qualified (agenda wise) Dem over a liberal Republican, but to date I've never had to make that choice. No qualified Dem ever showed up, so to date I can say I have NEVER voted for a Democrat. Wanna know what I did? huh huh huh? Wanna?

Its not news since I've posted it a couple times on here already. I left those races ...tada...blank, so as to congressional offices I plead guilty to not voting, but that wasn't what I was accused of now was it?

Nite all...you too, and take care. The bogey Dems cometh!

jerubaal,
"I agree with everything you said. Also, I don't understand why conservatives who plan to sit out the election don't just go ahead and vote for the Democrats. That way, they cancel out the votes of the clearer-headed conservatives as well."

As I understand it, these conservatives are standing on principle. They will not vote for a leftist Democrat. They also will not vote for a Republican that looks an awful lot like a leftist Democrat. They will be voting (on ammendments, commisioner of mosquito control, etc., just not for any Rs that could comfortably caucus with the Dems.

Cynewulf
For a RINO, I can't criticize that decision, although some people in Rhode Island that post here are going to vote for the RINO anyway to help out the non-RINOs in other states. I admire that position; I tolerate the short-sighted principled position of the folks you mention.

Some people are gonna sit it out to punish Congress as a whole in districts where there are no RINOs running. These I can't stand.

True colors
I was challenged by BS Detector on a posting yesterday about democrats who were on record as to raising taxes. Feel free to go to the following website http://www.joeroberts.us. He is the democratic challenger for the Florida 1st district congressional seat. He was on a talk show on the local radio station WEBY AM 1330 this afternoon. I am going to contact the radio station to see if they put any of this on the internet or make transcripts.

Anyway, some of the more interesting comments:

On taxes: Believes the Bush tax cuts need to be rolled back as we need more money to pay down the debt. Especially against anyone making more than $150k/year. He believes they should pay more in taxes, even though he acknowledges they are the business owners who employ many of the workers in America. Stated people who are in the lowest percentile in earnings shouldn't have to pay any taxes, then said they need to get higher pay so they can pay more in taxes.

On Eminent Domain (Kelo decision): Said the government taking peoples private property is unconstitutional and we need to do something about it. When questioned if he heard of the Kelo decision, which allows for this, then said something to the effect of Congress should do something about it.

On Homosexual Marriage: Says he's a Christian and a conservative not a neo-conservative. Believes his private life is no one's business and the Federal Government has no business interferring, saying it is unconstitutional. Further stated he believes the states' are handling the gay marriage issue quite well and we don't need to worry about it becoming an issue. When asked if he had any knowledge of the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the Constitution, said sure and acknowledged that the gay marriages allowed in Massachusetts would be acknowledged in Florida or any other state. Then thought that might be a problem. Finally was asked if he would sign a bill for a constitutional amendment stating a marriage is between a man and a woman, said no. He felt it wasn't that big of a deal and there are more important things to worry about than gay marriages.

This was not a debate but just him talking for two hours on the radio, answering questions from callers. Now maybe you agree with his statement on gay marriage. I don't know. I do know he has committed to the above points and it is enough for me to know he will not be getting my vote. For someone who is looking to be a US Congressman, he struck me as someone who had zero command of the issues, which is frightening to say the least.

He's Right but for the Wrong Reason
Yes. What Rush Limbaugh calls "cut-and-run" conservatives should vote.

But we who realize that Bush and those in Congress who support him are not true conservatives, but actually big-government not-liberals-but-something-or-other, definitely should vote for candidates who are *truly* for limited government, lower taxes, secure borders, economic freedom, etc.

These candidates would be the *Libertarian* candidates!!!

Don't stay home!! Send a message! A *real* message! Vote Libertarian!

I realize that the L.P. is officially for open borders. Many Libertarians, including myself, realize that this is a mistake.

Two good Texas candidates for the House agree that there needs to be border security. One is Ron Paul, nominally a Republican who is running for re-election. He's good! Very good! If you are in his district, vote for him!!

Then there is Libertarian Michael Badnarik in TX district 10. Excellent!!! Don't stay home; vote for him and send a message. He is the real deal.

Google these two! Check out LP.org to see who is in your district.

Granted we don't win, one big reason being the lapdog media who won't cover us. But you cannot complain that a Libertarian vote doesn't count if you are going to stay home.

Actually, a Libertarian vote *does* count! It sends a clear message we want our free country back!

I feel betrayed
Michael, I see your point, and I see everyone else's point here too, but I have to say this: as a conservative, I feel incredibly betrayed by Bush and the Republicans.

1. I expected them to do something about immigration and our borders, but they failed.

2. I expected them to protect marriage and family, but they failed. (Just look at what happened today in New Jersey)

3. I believed that Republicans shared my moral values, but it turns out they don't. Just look at the Mark Foley issue.

So, I feel that they should be punished this November so they can understand that conservatives aren't at their beck and call. They can't ignore our needs and expect us to vote for them. Maybe this will be a lesson for them to take us more seriously in the future.

Devolution of Debate
The only consistency in liberal political positions is that they are the opposite of whatever the Bush Administration is doing. That's political posturing, not a plan.

I don't trust Democrats to balance our approach to fighting the War on Terror because they are less interested in coming up with a consistent plan to fight a war against non-state actors while preserving civil liberties than they are with coming up with some means, any means, to impeach the Administration.

The right Way
"I believed that Republicans shared my moral values, but it turns out they don't. Just look at the Mark Foley issue"

Anyone who says this is a Democrat plant.
Foley was ousted, Clinton Studds and Frank were cheered.

FYI

New Information
I am now quoting directly from my own blog essay some information I learned about an hour ago:

Dick Mountjoy -- a solid, conservative Republican who, when he held statewide office was a staunch Second Amendment supporter -- is running against Dianne Feinstein for the US Senate seat up for grabs this election. Today, I was in contact with Mountjoy's office, and the Republican Party has failed to provide any support at all for Mountjoy's campaign.

I thought this was an important election. Isn't that what everybody's saying?

actually...
"I believed that Republicans shared my moral values, but it turns out they don't. Just look at the Mark Foley issue"

Anyone who says this is a Democrat plant.
Foley was ousted, Clinton Studds and Frank were cheered.

FYI

I think Clinton and Studds were were disgusting slimeballs and should have been kicked out. (btw, who's Frank?) Studds represented a new low in morality in America with his stubbornness to accept his behaviour. And Clinton..well, Ann Coulter puts it best that he was a "horny hick who snuck into the White House"

But, just because Foley is a Republican, I'm not going to absolve him of his sick conduct. I will admit that it was the right thing to do for Foley to resign right away, but that doesn't change what he did. As someone who has nephews and nieces that age, it makes me heartsick to think that Foley was preying on those children, and that the Republican leadership was possibly hiding it.

"I was challenged by BS Detector"

An unfortunate situation. Broken clocks can be relied upon two infinitessimal moments each day. Thinking of BSD that way doesn't work because he's right way more often than a broken clock, but not as frequently as a working one. You gotta be on your toes with that guy.

Thanks for the information, man. It's important for us to keep abreast of just how retarded the leadership of the GOP really is. You're doing a public service.

"I feel betrayed"

We all do. After 6 years of almost complete control of the Unites States, we were supposed to have already privatized social security and medicare and instituted a fair tax.

Zero out of three is BAAAAAAD.

And it drives me nuts knowing that thse issues don't even seem to be on the agenda? What happened to them? What happened to being represented in Congress in return for our vote? What happened to a balanced budget and REDUCTIONS in spending? Breach of contract, man.

The guys who failed to push our agenda with the honor and mandate we gave them do not deserve to represent us. They do not deserve our vote.

But I will do everything in my power to ensure that Mao Zhedong and Uncle Joe Stalin do not win this election. I'm not voting to support the republicans - I'm voting to support the Republic.

I can't believe...
...that I'm the first poster to mention the constitution party!

Just three posts up, Alice mentions a couple of good libertarian candidates; good for her!

Among all the other debates going on, I just don't get the one that essentially says, "vote repub, your only other choice is to vote dem or not vote at all!"

Uh, no, you have more choices than that. For those of us that are disgusted with the so-called "conservative" republicans, you could try going with a constitution party candidate.

For those of you who point out that when a party loses, they go towards center, well, that's not likely to happen if you vote for a party that's to their right. If the repubs lose big, and it's because the constitution party "stole" fifteen percent of "their" vote, what sort of message do you think that would send?

At the risk of going off-topic, I'm a little puzzled by pissed-off democrats. Not that any of them are listening, but they got wild-assed spending. They got a prescription medicine boondoggle that will dwarf the social security nightmare. They got open borders. What more do they want? All they had to give up was tax cuts "for the rich". And they voted for the other guy.

If I voted for a conservative candidate, but instead the "liberal" democrat won the election, and that president ended welfare, gutted medicare and medicaid, completely eliminated any trade barriers, and enforced immigration laws, and all this because he wanted, oh, say, gay marriage, I'd be pretty thrilled about the situation!

Imagine how angry the kos crowd would be if a real conservative had been elected!

Townhall Poll Update
"What is your prediction for the November election?
Republicans lose House, keep senate (110)

Republican keep House, lose senate (13)

Republican keep both (546)"

They were about the same numbers, with one hundred for "both" when I posted this before.

Looks like the Republicans have some Joementum.

Since normal people (a.k.a. Republicans) are the majority of America, I guess that's a good predictor of the election.

Nert is Right
You can vote for the Constitution Party, or the Libertarian Party.

But why stop there? Why vote for any party at all when you can exercise your right to vote for George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln as write-ins? Why, you could even vote for Ronald Reagan! In the words of Lewis Black, "I think his time has come again".

Why not, when the results will be the same: an in vivos democrat or republican will win the election in every district outside Connecticut.

jerubaal
sorry but I can't make heads or tails of your post.(honestly)

The Foley matter is disturbing but only pure partisans paint the whole party with the Foley scandal. The matter is HOW the party treats members who behave in such a matter.

There is nothing in the Foley scandal to 'fail' anyones moral values except the voters in the FL district he represents. Republicans would have gotten rid of him had he not resigned. Period.

What should they have done? Shot him at dawn?

PS. I mentioned the Constitution party in another thread. I wish they were more widespread.

Hey GOP: Don't YOU care?
I do not advocate "not voting"; that only makes the nonvoter a political unperson. I do however think we've come to the point that some chastisement is the only measure that might motivate right legislative behavior by the non-Democrats in Congress.

I am frankly insulted by this blatant strategy of manipulation, scare tactics, and cheap appeasement to which the Congressional Republicans & national party have sunk.

I am sick tired and fed up by six years of downright liberal legislation by a GOP controlled Congress that would have made old Lyndon Johnson drool with envy, not to mention downright bizarre crap like McCain-Feingold, only to have them come to us now at crunch time, throw us a couple of dry bones, and try to scare us with campfire bogeyman stories about Democrats.

Tell me something: if we're so important now, why do you pointedly disregard us and conservative principles in the sessions following elections? IMO what a Congress does in that odd year after an election is a strong indicator of where members' hearts and minds really are. And that indication over the past six years has been truly dismaying. Many of us DO watch these things; after all, we are bitten by them sooner or later. If we & our interests & beliefs are so insignificant when it comes time to spend and expand government, why do you bother talking to us and trying to scare us now? Go talk to these people, whoever they are, all these alleged "moderates" and "undecideds" you've been buying off.

I agree that the Demmies have so sullied themselves and stand for such horrifying rot that keeping them out of office amounts to a positive good. However, that just isn't good enough. We rightly have higher expectations than that. This is starting to look like a "Republicrat" strategy to have the Democratic wing scare and disgust the conservative heartland electorate into blindly reflexively supporting a feckless spineless rudderless "Democrat Lite" Republican wing. The way for us to win this little game is to REFUSE TO PLAY their way.

I don't buy the theory that only Republicans with a capital 'R,' who were the officially anointed Congressional candidates of the national party, can deal with terrorism or national security or other vital matters. I happen to think a good leavening of conservative & libertarian primary underdogs or indies in Congress would do a world of good for those issues as well as the others on which the GOP has dropped the ball.

The time, for the Republican leadership in Congress and the national party to start worrying about the support of the conservative base, is each and every day of the Congressional session, each and every floor vote and committee vote, not "how can we scare them and throw them a bone" the end of the summer just before elections.

I'm fairly sure that "Frank" refers to Barney Frank - if it's not him, then I have absolutely no clue - Congressman from Taxachusetts. He is gay; he "came out" sometime in the 1990's (maybe the 1980's? I don't live in that state, so I don't keep close track on him.) and he continues to get re-elected every two years.

He is one of the most rabid pro-gay-pro-Lesbian-pro-every-kind-of-weird-sex-you-can-think-of members of Congress.

One of your earlier posts: Michael, I see your point, and I see everyone else's point here too, but I have to say this: as a conservative, I feel incredibly betrayed by Bush and the Republicans.

Maybe this will be a lesson for them to take us more seriously in the future."

I just thought of another analogy: forget punishment; imagine standing at your sink, washing your hands. You control the temperature of the water by turning the two handles. You want hotter water? Open the hot water handle some more and/or close the cold water handle soem. You want the water a little cooler? Open the cold water handle a little more.....

You want a more conservative government? Vote for conservatives. You want a more liberal government? Vote for liberals.

I've been disappointed, too - but remember how much got done in a conservative direction in 2001-2002? - because while the Republicans were a majority in the House, the Dumbocrats had a majority in the Senate, so Sen Tom Daschle (Democrat from South Dakota) sat on everything he didn't like. It was all we (and Pres Bush) could do to keep the country from forgetting 9/11 - the Democrats sure didn't want us to remember it.

1. The House had a spine recently, and insisted that the recently passed immigration bill would be Enforcement-Only, no amnesty, although the combination of Democrats and RINOs in the Senate AND Bush were pushing hard for a "complete package".

2. Some of thm, at least, are trying, but the present SCOTUS is rather discouraging. Now, if we maintain a majority of Conservatives in the Senate, preferably even a filibuster-proof majority, and if one of those Carter- (or Clinton-) appointees retires, and we can pressure Bush to nominate a true Constructionist - you do remember what happened when he nominated Harriet Miers, right? Conservatives went berserk e-mailing, faxing, etc messages to Bush, like "Are you nuts?" They pointed out Miers' questionable past and said, "Get us a real constructionist!"
So if we get another conservative, no-living-document-crap constructionist nominated, and the conservative majority (that I'm hoping for) in the Senate confirms that nominee, then let's see what happens with gay marriage, abortion, etc.

3. Obviously, Foley is embarrassing, and I certainly think we're better off with him gone. However, at least _some_ Republicans share my values - yours, too, I believe - while it's a sure bet that none of the Democrats do, except for the Democrats who aren't willing to act on their values. (I'm thinking of the present governor of Michigan, running for re-election this year - Democrat, BTW - who says in one of her ads that she's personally against abortion, but she believes "that this deeply personal and private decision should be between a woman and her doctor" - in other words, we can't pass a law against it.
To compare with Foley, consider the list of Democrats with question marks on their records: President John Kennedy had an affair with Marilyn Monroe - some Democrats are still idolizing him.
Barney Frank, whom I mentioned above, has no trouble getting re-elected. Oh, did I mention that at one time, he had a gay lover running a prostitution ring in the apartment they shared. Congressman Frank? Still getting re-elected, time after time.
Sen Ted "the Swimmer" Kennedy - yes, I understand that some in his home state call him "the Swimmer". Do you remember the story about Mary Jo Kopechne, who didn't live long enough to tell her side of the story? If you don't, I'm sure you can find all the juicy/revolting details on Google.
Gerry Studds and Bill Clinton, who were mentioned in other posts here.
If the adage about "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" applies here, I think it would be more like, with the Republicans there are still a lot of bushes - potential politicians _with_ _good_ _morals_; with the Democrats, there are no bushes, just barren desert - and we're not sure about the Democrat birds we have (the morals of Democratic politicans in office now, or running for office).

Bush _did_ still manage to cut our taxes, although to get that through the Senate, he had to make them temporary.

You _are_ aware of the clock ticking on the Bush tax cuts, right? If the Democrats get control of either House _or_ Senate, they won't have to do anything that would likely appear on CNN-ABC-CBS-NBC-PBS-NYT-Washington Post: all they would have to do is keep the issue in committee, if anyone does propose to make the cuts permanent. See? they'd just spend all the time debating hate crimes legislation, getting our troops home immediately if not sooner, increasing spending.....

9th Reason
With the Democrats in charge, we can kiss the 2nd Amendment good-bye!

'Speaker' Nancy Pelosi is one of the biggest anti-gun people in the Congress and has vowed to take all our guns the moment she has the chance. And with her buddies in the Senate - Kennedy, Kerry, Boxer, Feinstein, Clinton and Schumer - they'll do just that.

Which means that all gun owners MUST make sure we maintain our hold on the Senate and do our best to do the same in the House.

If we lose either, make sure you buy as many as you can afford, because we'll see another Brady-style anti-gun bill package by mid-year.

Not a Record to be Proud of

Republicans have had six years of total control and chances to make things work better. In that time I have not heard any mention of a balanced budget admentment or a term limits amendment. Whatever happened to the Contract With America. I think that we "fiscal conservatives" and "smaller government conservatives" were conned in 1994 by Newt and the Republicans.

You and other "conservative" columnists have been either supporting or making excuses for an incompetent Bush Administration for six years. And the Republican Congress has been guilty of aiding and abetting Bush's anti-conservative agenda for its entire six years. This includes record spending growth, record budget deficits, record numbers of special interest earmarks, record numbers of no-bid contracts to favorite cronies, record numbers of guilty pleas for congressmen and their aides, record numbers of jobs outsourced overseas, record numbers of illegal immigrants, and record trade deficits.

Then there are the expensive and inefficient new LBJ-type programs such as No Child Left Behind, and Medicare Drugs. Then there is the incompetent and wasteful response to Katrina. Then there is the record spending and record stupidity associated with the Iraq debacle -- the bull of the Bush Administration's white elephant herd.

I don't know many true conservatives who still think that Bush is really conservative. He is certainly not a "fiscal conservative" or a "smaller government conservative".

The President and Congress need to solve many problems for the American people during the next two years, but we can't trust a Republican Congress to provide any balance, guidance or oversight to this wacky White House. I think it is time to see how our government works when Congress actually acts as a check and balance to an out-of-control Executive Branch. That is what the founding fathers wanted, but it won't happen with a Republican Congress.

By the way, yours is about the sixth column that I've read on this "Please forgive us and Vote Republican" theme. It is amazing how all you columnists and radio hosts are now saying "Please overlook the mess that the Republicans and neocons have created and vote for us just one more time. We will be more conservative in the future. Just trust us again" Just who are you taking your writing orders from?

Michael is probably right but...
I just wish there was a reason to vote for Republicans other than "the Democrats would be worse". Under a Republican administration and congress, the government has been spending our money like drunken sailors, virtually erased the borders, has had the worst instincts and judgement regarding the Iraq invasion, balooned the deficit. I will probably vote Republican, but explain to me again how the Democrats would be worse?

Eight reasons why....
This article has the wrong title. It should have titled, "Eight reasons why Conservatives should have known better than to put themselves in a position to lose majority." Take some responsiblity, why don'tcha?

Realistic Appraisal
Fear mongering is so unbecoming. A realist interpretation of the possible outcome of elections will only see a slim DNC majority in the House and a slim GOP majority in the Senate. I view this as a good state of affairs, mainly from the perspective that a Congress loyal to the President tends not to execise it's Constitutionaly mandated role as a balance to Excecutive power. Which is why I voted GOP for the House & DNC for the Senate. More importantly our troops lives are on the line. It is with their(and my)welfare in mind that I oppose continued GOP majority of both Houses. The SecDef has proved to be unable to deal with the challenges that confront us. So go ahead, put your party loyalties above the needs of our troops for competent civilian leadership.

FYI: The President is CinC, NOT the generals. Yes, it is prudent for him to seek their counsel, but to rely soley on their consul is NOT his role.

go ahead let the dumbocrats take over
How could the democrats possibly protect us? They won't listen in when terrorists call their buds in America, and there are probably already plenty here, but with their plan to open up the borders and give all kinds of aid and rights that Americans don't even have, there will be a flood. They will ignore money being sent from terrorists to people in this country that our children have to live in,especially if the terrorists pay taxes on it. They will let the terrorists do anything they want to as long as the terrorists promise not to do it again. They will tax the economy into a recession to support any freeloader on the planet as long as they move here and register as an Democrat. They will release the terrorists we have captured, including the mastermind of 911,with compensation, but treat the terrorists so well they will only leave 'CLUB GITMO RESORT AND SPA' if they let them stay in AMERICA, which they will gladly let them do if they register as Democrats. They will blame anything that goes wrong on Bush. They will have orgies in the White House and not answer the phone when someone calls wanting permission to protect America, which they would not let them do anyway without a warrant from a judge who won't answer the phone because they are at an orgie at the Whitehouse.I wish people would stop minimizing the evility of the insane islamists. They do not behead their prisoners. They would never do that. They hold their prisoners down, take a semi-sharp knife, and saw the head off of their prisoners who they deem to not be evil enough for them. This looks much more painful than simply beheading a person. The reason I know this is because they also video tape and then post these atrocities on the net. They follow that by stoking up the flames that are going to roast them in hell by proclaiming that GOD had them do the evil deed they decided to do. Offending someone by criticizing or poking fun at someone does not create a problem, it reveals a problem. Walking on eggshells to avoid offending someone only makes the problem worse. The offendee will progressively become more sensitive and/or violent as long as we allow them to be specially treated just because they are so uncomfortable with who they are or how powerful the telescope is that they have to use to look up to us with. If a person answers criticism with criticism, I believe they are admitting they did something wrong, but it was ok, so they will continue. Consequently, due to human nature( and gravity) they will gradually due more and more wrongs, and their severity will become worse and worse ( like my keyboarding ). This is compounded if this person criticizes people when they, themselves, aren't being criticized. That could be why there are so many crooked politicians and left wing commentators. Likely these media types have shifted to the left so gradually they didn't notice, so they don't believe they have. This is multiplied by their hypocritical belief that a media person should not be biased to either side. That makes it real hard for them to admit their bias to themselves, much less to others. Just my opinion. Do you reckon the Clintons think, if they pretend to convert to Islam and change their names to Billybabla and Hillatolla Clintahammud, that Adolphatoldya al Kilanmaimye or Ahkalugi al Anajihad, or whomever is in charge of the Muzzlethim Insanists, is going to let them run something just because they did their best to hinder AMERICA'S war effort? I probably should delete that because, unfortunately, in the world today, the most successful segment of society cannot say or do ANY little thing, that ANY part of a less successful segment might POSSIBLY consider the LEAST BIT disrespectful to anyone they have EVER HEARD OF. At the same time the less successful segments can say ANYTHING they want to about the most successful segment. This creates a double standard that can be used to a considerable advantage by someone with low morals. A person with self respect will not be shaken by anything, anyone says about them, unless they are running for office. Unfortunately, many people, who actually vote, do not go to the trouble to verify what they hear from the media, especially if it is something they have already formed an opinion about. Most people in America would not lie or deceive through the media, so they assume no one else would. Alas, the American mainstream media, who many Americans consider the most trustworthy, often is the most deceitful. Apparently, the mainstream media, as well as many other leftists (liberals), will go to any length they think they can POSSIBLY get away with, including putting American soldiers (who are risking their lives defending the very system the lefterals so craftily abuse) in even greater danger than they're already in. Add to that, they seem to be trying to make it as easy as possible for terrorists to strike America (now we all know a REAL AMERICAN would never do any like that). All this to discredit the Republicans enough to take control of America. Fortunately, their is a GOD, and it is usually not for the benefit of the world for people like these lefterals to be in control of the MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. I don't know how to start a new paragraph. An easily offended person often considers themselves inferior to the person who offends them. Many people, less successful, in their opinion, than others, are resentful of people whom they consider to be better off than they are. But, often they don't intend to put forth the effort necessary to legally become the people they are so envious of. This is usually why someone, who actually has the same opportunity for success as anyone else, falls behind. While it is true that some people get a head start on others, this is usually due to effort a relative exerted, over and above the effort of relatives of the less fortunate. Success is almost always do to greater effort than the less successful. This can be compounded when, generation after generation, less successful people rationalize their position in life by criticizing people they are envious of. Often, they will exaggerate, present rumor or conclusion as fact, or if necessary, lie through their teeth in order to make it ok, in their twisted mind, to not even try, legally, to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. Some are so far behind ,due to generations of this mind set and the resulting lack of effort, that it will take generations to catch up. They use the seemingly unbearable time and effort as an excuse not to even try. Instead , they criticize the people they envy in an attempt to rationalize their perceived inferiority and misery. This leads to being so resentful of people they actually look up to, they are so easily offended it is hard to talk to them at all, thus the futility of negotiating with people who are so resentful of others, they want to kill the people they actually feel so inferior to, they have become irrational, often irreversibly. This also explains the low-down, sleazy, cheesy, unconscionable, dirty tricks pulled by the Democrats, election after election. While, at the same time, they hold the REAL AMERICANS (Republicans) to extra high standards they themselves are incapable of obtaining. By adhering to this double standard, the gap gets wider and wider.(If any of this describes real people, it is purely coincidental)

Reasons to vote Republican
Just count the number of troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the rest of the world and that is the number of reasons to vote Republican. If the dems have their way they will cut funding of the war on terror and put our soldiers in deeper jeopardy.

Actually all Americans will be in deeper jeopardy, if the dems get their way they will have America playing patty cake with the likes of Al Quieda, that idiot in North Korea and the one in Iran.

On a personal note, I don't want to lose the tax cuts and believe me I am not rich. My husband and I just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and it would be a shame to redefine marriage as anything but the union of one man and one woman. I wonder how many of the babies that have been aborted would have grown up to be truly great Americans, like a scientist who would come up with a cure for cancer or alzheimers or any of the other terrible illnesses, or a true statesman who could be respected and admired for his honesty, intelligence and morals.

I am not going to have to hold my nose to vote Republican, I am going to do it proudly and with the knowlege that it is the right thing to do.

More Hollow Reasons To Vote...
1. Abortion - They claimed to be against it, but after 8 years, 1.5 million innocent babies (not fetuses) are still being killed each year.

2. Gay Marriages - Not even all of them claim to be against it, and many more are willing to give it a different name, but equal privilege. By the way, to all those who are gay, this issue does matter and will never change with conservative voters.

3. Illegal Immigration - They have been in 8 years, in control of the Congress, Senate, and Presidency, and they sign an inflated and hollow bill concerning its enforcement last week.

4. Conservative Values - They have fallen over themselves to court the neo-cons and the leading Dems to compromise on issues like: education funding, increasing the National Endowment for the Arts funds, Planned Parenthood, AIDS programs -vs- other programs for diseases. You can't claim to have traditional family values and yet endorse and fund programs that undermine those family values.

5. Israel - If President Bush has been pro-Israel, then why have we seen Condi threatening Israel to work it out with the terrorists which surround them? It is none of our business if Israel defends herself or not, unless we are going to fight along side of her.

Must I go on?

Now, here are some hollow and empty reasons to vote for Dems:

1. Nancy Pelosi's head.
2. Hillary Clinton's heart.
3. Bill Nelson's voting record.
4. John McCain's loyalty to conservativism (He might as well be a Dem).
5. Ted Kennedy's shot glass.
6. John Kerry's speeches.
7. Diane Feinstein, Cynthia McKinney, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Cindy Sheehan, Obama, etc.
8. Michael Moore's Twinkie Box
9. Howard Dean's Pep Rally Rants
10. Al Gore's American Invitations to Speak ("Cheer up ole Chap. There's always England.")
11. Novels written by a Democratic Senator, with lewd and lascivious behavior with minors, that don't really mean what they mean, if you know what I mean.
12. The ACLU's patriotism for America.
13. Barbara Streisand's knowledge about politics.
14. Radio's Air America's studio and bank account and listenership.
15. The liberal media's (CNN, Orlando Sentinel, NY Times, Chicago Tribune, CBS, etc.)motive of honesty and objectivity.

The Only Reason You Should Need
I plead with you Michael to TALK ABOUT this story!

Although reports abound on the internet about the Obama/Odinga relationship, the mainstream Press has silenced this story.

As American citizens we are outraged at the failure of the Press to report pertinent facts surrounding the candidate Barack Obama and this and other associations, and believe that on the eve of our elections, this gross censorship may have placed our Democratic government and Natiional Security in "Clear and Present Danger."

As citizens for the Truth in Media, we demand the story of Obama/Odinga be reported to the American people in time to learn the facts before the November elections.
