Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The disease of America Hatred now has reached pandemic proportions in many corners of the globe, spreading far beyond the predictably hopeless fever swamps of Islamic militants, French intellectuals, or Latin American demagogues. In fact, many citizens within the USA itself energetically embrace the basic assumptions of America Hatred, perceiving their country as an unequivocally negative force on the world scene.

John Tirman, director of MIT’s prestigious Center for International Studies, recently wrote a book called “100 Ways America is Screwing Up the World.” When questioned on my radio show, he refused to dismiss the notion that humanity might have been better off if Europeans had never settled North America in the first place – in other words, if the USA as we know it had never come into existence.

The most direct way to counter such disgraceful fatuity is with reference to a key element in a classic American contribution to world cinema: Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life.” George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) learns to appreciate his own worth after getting a glimpse of the direction his community of Bedford Falls might have taken had he not been around to serve and save it. By the same token, America bashers might try a thought experiment in which they imagine a world in which the USA never existed and played no current role. Would Belgium and Canada have somehow pooled their mighty military machines and succeeded in rescuing humanity from Naziism – and Communism? If not for the United States, which nation might have inspired the world to pursue self-government and human rights? Remember, the famous French Revolution proved so feckless in this regard that the frog-eaters anointed an all-powerful Emperor (Napoleon) less than twenty years after they guillotined their king. In terms of commercial activity and living standards, the United States remains the indefatigable engine that drives the world economy, with productivity and ingenuity as indispensable to sustaining global prosperity as American agricultural bounty is essential to feeding all of humanity.

The irrational nature of America Hatred comes into clearest focus with the realization that this destructive passion flourishes most spectacularly among those who have benefited most conspicuously from the existence of the U.S. You’ll find such festering resentment in Western Europe in general (France in particular), Islamic nations especially dependent on American aid, support and trade (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, for example), among pampered, privileged stars in the entertainment industry, and on elite university campuses in the United States and around the world.

If, then, the most outspoken advocates of America Hatred have seldom suffered personally at the hands of the nation they loathe, how can we understand their implacable hostility? Three factors help to explain this impassioned abhorrence which, like most consuming hatreds, does its most serious damage to the haters themselves ---

I. ENVY

When the society often described as “the world’s most hated nation” also turns out to be the country most fervently desired as a destination for immigrants from everywhere, then it’s blindingly obvious that envy plays the leading role in generating hostility to the United States. In the same way that the most successful kid in school will generate considerable resentment, or the most prominent and prosperous citizen of a town will provoke hostility from some of his less fortunate neighbors, the US draws anger and condemnation precisely because of its overwhelming power and influence. America hatred has clearly intensified in the last fifteen years, though it’s hard to make the case that our country has suddenly begun playing a more destructive role in the world since the conclusion of the Cold War. What changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union is the disappearance of any credible rival to the last remaining superpower, so that the US, as the unequivocally dominant power on the planet, draws more anger and suspicion than it did during the long struggle with global Communism.

Moreover, the envy that spurs anti-Americanism often stems from a resentment of US power, rather than jealousy of the wealth and freedoms Americans so obviously enjoy. For instance, the citizens of the Netherlands boast living standards that compare favorably with those of many Americans, and have built a vibrant democracy with abundant civil liberties. Nevertheless, when voters go to the polls in Amsterdam or Utrecht they make decisions with no significant consequences beyond the boundaries of Holland; American elections, by contrast, help determine the future of all of civilization and resonate in the remotest corners of the planet. After the Bush re-election in 2004, several journalists in Europe suggested that residents of nations allied with America should get the chance to vote in US elections because of the impact of those campaigns on every nation’s future —a sure indication of the seething envy for the centrality and influence of the USA that contributes unmistakably to America Hatred.

Among America-haters within the USA, their jealousy is directed at presently powerful major institutions (the military, the corporations, the Republican Party, conservative religious groups) and the “great unwashed” who support them. Their alienation from long-standing traditions, current trends, and the majority of their fellow citizens make them feel like exiles in their own country – and to resent the nation which, for the most part, continues to ignore their increasingly hysterical criticisms.

II. THE LEGACY OF COMMUNISM.

For nearly fifty years the Communist Empire that covered half the globe invested untold resources in the most vile and relentless anti-American propaganda. More than a billion adults in today’s world grew up under fanatical dictatorships headed by the likes of Brezhnev, Mao, Castro, Kim Il Sung where school books, youth organizations, radio, movies, TV, newspapers, even official holidays spread the vicious and preposterous lies about life in the United States. Declassified files in the former Soviet Union show that the KGB and related organizations also spent literally hundreds of millions of dollars to spread the same lies in the West – hiring countless agents of “disinformation” to communicate the idea that America is a uniquely cruel, corrupt, exploitative, racist, militaristic, imperialist, and religiously fanatical society whose very existence menaces “People’s Republics” everywhere. Of course, Communist dictatorships remain in power from Beijing to Havana and they’ve been joined recently by leftist demagogues such as Hugo Chavez in Venezuela or Evo Morales in Bolivia who depend on whipping up anti-Yankee sentiment to maintain their tenuous hold on power. To an astonishing degree, the condemnations of the United States by even the most “advanced” and “sophisticated” pundits and professors in the West continue to echo the ancient particulars of Marxist anti-Americanism first put forward by Lenin himself, and later elaborated by his Stalinist successors. In a sense, the current discredited state of Marxist ideology (with massive economic failures and appalling mass murder in every nation under Communist rule) only redoubled the anti-American fervor on the left: former apologists for Stalinism, Maoism, Castroism and other horrors can now salve their consciences by insisting that the American economic and political system is even worse than the nightmarish regimes they once embraced.

III. TOXIC POPULAR CULTURE.

Made-in-America movies, TV shows, popular music, fast food and fashion trends remain this nation’s most successful exports to the rest of humanity. Instead of inspiring affection for the USA (as did the Hollywood products of the 1930’s and ‘40’s, for instance), the current entertainment offerings deliver a dark, dysfunctional view of life in North America. Few people in Burundi or Bangladesh will ever get the chance to visit L.A. or New York but they’ll all get visions of American life on TV or at the movies – visions that emphasize violence, sexual indulgence, economic injustice, pervasive corruption, selfishness and villainy of every sort. Most of the societies in the non-Western world (very much including China, India, much of Africa and Latin America, and nearly all of the Islamic world) maintain a commitment to highly traditional family values that would rank as outrageously restrictive, even “puritanical” in US terms. Of course, hundreds of millions in such societies view the risqué contents of American entertainment as decadent and damaging, a (perhaps conspiratorial) threat to the morals that traditionalists year to sustain and defend. When the most creative story-tellers within America itself fail time and again to portray the overwhelming goodness, decency, kindness and wide-open opportunity that remain essential elements of the American experience, then one can hardly blame the impoverished audiences in less fortunate corners of the earth for remaining ignorant of the true nature of the USA.

The factors that produce the surging levels of America Hatred—Envy, Communist Legacy and Pop Cultural influence—all do more damage to the people who succumb to that loathing than they do to the interests of the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Envy distracts from constructive effort, paralyzing both nations and individuals; nostalgia for the bad-old-days of Marxist tyranny encourages the worst tendencies in any society, and embracing the current products of US pop culture (gangsta rap, anyone?) grants influence to the worst, not the best, messages from American society.

The one form of anti-Americanism that ought to worry the citizens and leaders of this country involves the elitist contempt here at home for the nation’s past and present—contempt tirelessly fomented by leading educators and media figures. Political historian Michael Barone recently identified such leaders as “our covert enemies” who have “been working, over many years, to undermine faith in our society and confidence in its goodness…. Our covert enemies don’t want the Islamo-fascists to win. But in some corner of their hearts they would like us to lose.”

Understanding and confronting America Hatred wherever it occurs, around the world but most importantly here at home, will help to insure that these potentially dangerous enemies never get their secret wish.

This
should be a mildly interesting thread.

It drives liberals crazy to get called out like this. It must be a truly miserable life.

First response: WHO CARES?
Second is that hollyweird is much to blame. Natch.

Last thought. I don't care what the world thinks of America. The America haters here do bother me, a lot.

Disinformation
Michael Medved is right, as usual, except that he left out one very important point -- the power of leftists in journalism to make up lies and propoganda, and disseminate it all over their home countries. Then the populations just soak it up, because they'd rather read/see bad news about the USA than good news, because of that envy that Michael M. was talking about.

Americans who hate America...
...are so afraid of what "the World" (usually the socialist part of the world) thinks, or what "the World" will do to them, as an American, that they actually believe that being on the other side--the anti-American side--will protect them somehow. "Attack those rightwing guys over there! Don't attack me! I'm a properly anti-capitalist anti-Christian America-despising man-of-the-World, just like you! Please don't hurt me..... Let’s be friends…."

I remember Richard.
Not "Little Richard". Richard Cohen, the leftist creep who writes for the Washington Post. This guy wrote an article several weeks ago in which he allowed that he is now ready to "imagine a world without Israel".

Michael Medved speculates about a world in which America did not play the role that it has. Imagine that. European scumbags would have joined those who marched into the ovens. Would the world be a better place without the EU?

I suspect that Hitler and the Axis powers would not have been able to invade and conquer America because of the oceanic barrier. America would have out produced them whether France and the rest of the Europeans survived or not.

Imagine a world without France. Hey! While we are at it, imagine a world without Palstineans, America hating academics, leftist media propagandists and leftists period. Oh! I almost forgot. How about a world without a UN? Can anybody imagine that?

I imagine I could handle that world with no trouble. In the meantime lets see if we can figure out how to get rid of illegal aliens and traitorous politicians who obviouly are imagining an America without a middle class, and speaking Spanish.

neo-cons
tanabear,

The origin of the word "neo-con" is just as it sounds--a new conservative--typically a liberal Democrat who became a conservative Republican when American "liberalism" became too angry, too guilt-ridden, and too anti-American to be supported by anyone who loves the American Dream.

If America is hated, we must be right
If America is hated so much, that means we must be doing things right.

Exploit?
nona persona,

If I owned a pile of sand in some desert hellhole, and just happened to find a giant sea of oil underneath my sun-bleached tent, then by all means, come "exploit" me. Please! What am I going to do with all that oil? Drink it? I want my fleet of Bentleys and an air-conditioned palace too. I'd even build some hospitals and some libraries. That might look like exploitation to you, but it looks like winning the lottery to the people who live there. If the government, where the resource is, is so corrupt that the money never gets down to the bottom rungs of the ladder, that's certainly not America's fault. And if American do-gooders come to tell them how they have to spend and distribute their windfall, then that's one place where resentment starts, if you're looking for the causes of resentment.

John Tirman
If America never existed, chances are John Tirman's government, whatever that be, wouldn't have the basic human right to write a book that criticizes its government.

A great read explaining Anti-Americanism from a french perspective, and well written: Anti-Americanism by Jean-Francois Revel

laugh or cry
Mr. Medved; When I read your thoughless article, I wondered whether to laugh or cry!

You don't even have a clue that America today has changed from being the envy of the world to becoming a joke for its ignorance and hypocracy!

You criticize the French. Have you been to France lately?? Travel a little and see the world. May be you well get some neurons connected.

Hate America
Mr. Medved is absolutely right. Hate America is an illnees, which I call "the Lilliputhian Syndrome". We are a Gulliver who steps on the little ones only by moving about, and even when he wants to help them. However, self-hatred as shown by so many Americans, only Sigmund Freud could explain.

Same old story
why is it that everytime I read a post with the slant emphasised to the LEFT I want to ThrowUP?
So far I have read that America is seen this way because of it's "exploitation of the world resources". And what was it tanabear said? something about a Bush cause and effect. I would agree slightly with both points but... Wouldn't it reason that the most prosperous civilization the planet has ever seen has moved most of the world forward using that explotation? Isn't it a good thing the Medical advances, computers (I only mean Apple) Walmart (no Kinding!!!) doesn't that show that in a roundabout way we Americans have put that explotation to good use? Do you on the left wish us to remain in the backwoods of civilization? Hey, I envy the Amish just as much as the next guy but let's be real here without that oil to make that plastic your laptop would weigh 60 lbs!

As far as the Bush connection. I think it has more to do with him being the point of the spearhead for the return of Conservative values in America. Than it being his going to war thing. The values thing just pisses the ULtraLeftist in Europe off even more.

As far as the French go. I visited there (and the rest of Europe in my twenties around the time of the Bicentennial for about a year and I spent a month in lovely France and trust me on this one they hated us then too. European governments ever since WWII have had a inferiority complex towards the USA. Their media has done the same number on their people as has our MSM.

For the youngsters reading here. Just remember the cowboy image has been around for as long as I can remember. It isn't a GWB "thing".

As a side note I use to work for Renault here in the US. They would send over their engineers for a 6-12 month stint. By the time they had to go back home none, not one wanted to. Could anyone on the left tell me why???

The World Hates Success
Judging from what I hear up here in Canada, even among allegedly professional and educated people, the main thing America does wrong is that it is successful. Socialists who are told repeatedly that all they should aspire to is having just what everyone else has -- unless they win the goverment-sponsored Lotto, of course, or get rich at a Government Casino -- become upset and angry when they see Americans that are even lower down the social scale than they are with much nicer stuff and much more comfortable lifestyles, better health care, longer lives, and the chance to succeed by their own merits (MERITS?). To protect themselves from the knowledge that they could do the same if only they had the backbone, the ambition or the work ethic, they heap scorn and contempt on the whole idea of success.

It's all very simple, really. There's a good reason why most of the Deadly Sins refer to covetousness in one form or another.

Inferiority complex……
As one commentator (not on this site) succinctly put it (and I’m paraphrasing here), “one minute they’re demonstrating in front of our embassies; the next minute they’re in line hoping for visas to the land of opportunity and freedom”. Let’s just hope it’s not for mischief……

The rest of the free world had better play nice. We are the only nation really capable of protecting them from the barbarian onslaught. Further, we should not bother with “winning the hearts and minds” of the rest of the world. They’re going to believe what they want to believe, no matter how incoherent or self-diminishing. Especially, if it makes them feel better about themselves. But deep down the free, democratic nations, even France, know we are their only “salvation”.

Poor Tanabear
If somebody took "neo-cons" and "Bush" out of his posts... there would be nothing of substance remaining (and I use the word "substance" very generously).

Tanabear... I've got some good news and some bad news for you....

The good news?: You are NOT paranoid.

The bad?: Some people really ARE out to get you!

The Fourth
Self Loathing:

We inspire hatred and jealousy over the "rich" not paying enough taxes, although it is a view which would penalize the economic stature and economic growth of the country.

We have a Press that is not tied into our successes and strengths, but our failures and deficiences. Goodness is not news, so it receives short shrift. They have no pride in who we are as a people, since that wold give credit to their politiacal enemies.

We are too visible, unlike the mid 20th century when our institutions and our standard of living were confined between two oceans. Now we are 'frontpage'[and tube],and since the demise of the Soviet Union, the focus, and our adjustment to being the survivinng world leader has been overtly timid, un-Teddy like, and now deferring to the whimpy United Nations, to accommodate the clueless. We are not being a leader, so all can seek our inadequacies with impunity. [al-Quaeda, Iran, Hezbollah, France, No. Korea, Koki Annon, more...]

Col. Doug Clements, USAF ret., DeBary FL

Blame GW!?
You can't claim that what has inspired hate in one part of the world is the same inspiration in another. While our export of decadence and indecency is a compelling reason to hate America it's only a single facet.

South Americans have been left out of our wealth for decades. We haven't been a stabilizing force to them, only an exporter of poverty. They perceive a corrupt, anti-Hispanic America doing more to prevent their development than helping while enriching Asian, European and other countries.

The Middle East is just all about anti-Semitism and our perceived disregard for their religious convictions. To them we are the second Jewish state. We ship more than movies that attack their culture.

The French have always been extreme nationalists, I can understand envy there, plus Jerry Lewis has stopped making movies.

It's sad that we scratch our heads in wonder of the source of the hatred instead of hearing the truth from our media. It's just stupid to think that it must be GW that is causing what has been festering for decades.

World Hates??
Black-white, love-hate; give me a break. If life could be so simple. Let's face it we are in a slump, we are batting in the low 100's and the crowd loves a winner. GET OVER IT!!

We are two years away from a new season and hopefully we'll get it right next time.

why do they hate us
I really don't care why they hate us.

But

1) We're just pups - Just 230 years out of the gate and we are already the richest most powerful nation the world has ever known. That drives Europeans NUTS.

2) We saved Europe's butt 4 times in the last century - WW1, WW2, The Marshall Plan after WW2 and then we put up a nuclear shield for 50 years or so to protect the rest of Europe from the good old USSR.

3) Look at a map of the world in 1775, the year before the USA was invented. Where are they now? (Who really gives a s...?)

There is a story that sometime in the 1950s when NATO was a big deal General Charles De Gaulle decided to keep France out of NATO and made a remark that he wanted every American soldier out of France. John Foster Dulles is reputed to have said "Does that include the 100,000 buried there?" For once De Gaulle shut up.

There are I am sure some good and valid reasons for disagreements between us and other countries but that is life. Refer back to reason #2 - we saved their butts 4 times in 100 years - that says more than anything how impotent they are.

We saved their butts 4 times in 100 years and they'll NEVER forgive us for that.

But if the s... hits the fan someplace who do they call?

In conclusion - why do they hate us? Who gives a s...? I'm not too fond of most of them. And if this is such a terrible place, why do we have such a problem with illegal immigrants? And who cares why they hate us as long as they fear us.

afn&tt

Uncle Max

p.s. - sorry for the lack of nuance

Why they really hate us
Medved writes: "America hatred has clearly intensified in the last fifteen years, though it’s hard to make the case that our country has suddenly begun playing a more destructive role in the world since the conclusion of the Cold War."

No it isn't. It's an easy case to make that in the last five years we have begun playing a more destructive role in the world. Which, not coincidentally, exactly corresponds with the massive rise in anti-Americanism. Like it or not, George Bush is the face of America right now. And when most people around the world look at George Bush they see a moron with a huge arsenal of weapons and an itchy trigger finger.

America has, indeed, accomplished some great things in the past. But the reason for the steep rise in Anti Americanism is simple: under George Bush, this country has done more harm than good.

Also, Michael blames Hollywood for a lot of the Anti-Americanism. As if Hollywood isn't a part of America. Hollywood is a reaction to American culture as much as it is a driver of American culture. Hollywood dishes out what people want to watch. But Michael doesn't want to acknowledge that because that would mean that American culture itself is poisonous. And if we are exporting a poisonous culture, why shouldn't the rest of the world hate us for it?

Also Michael wants to blame Anti-Americanism on Communist propaganda. But the fact is, among the few places in the world where America is still respected are the former Soviet satelites. Sort of undermines his point, doesn't it?

Could it be, folks, that Anti-Americanism is not the result of some petty emotions or delusional thinking, but the natural and appropriate response to our disasterous leadership?

Phylo out.

Bush might be part of it....
but Ronald Reagan was labelled a cowboy, too.

Yes, most Arab countries, most of Europe - especially France - and all the communist "People's Republics" hated us then, too.

Hatred of America is pandemic?
Dear Sir:
What's that again, hatred of America is pandemic?
Where do you get your information? I happen to
live in Europe where Germany is hated more than
America! Dig up all the reports of the World Cup
that just happened this year in Cologn if you
want to know who is un-loved. It was the English
the Belgen and the French football (soccer) fans
against the Germans. Fights in the streets and
who was fighting whom. That to me is much better indication of true feelings of one country for another! Because it's the man on the street who is expressing his views, and not sombody who sits in an office whose only motovation is to keep his Job by inventing stories for what ever reason.

Stop spreading gossip!

No one gets to vote in American elections but American citizens (in theory) so what some polls worldwide said about who the world wanted to elect are meningless! Besides which, America hatred did not start with GWB...the world hated Carter, Reagan, Bush41, and Clinton. And they all hated them for the same reasons that they hate GWB now, because he is the President of the most powerful nation on earth, period!

Granted that Hollywood is located within U.S. boundaries, therefore part of the U.S.
BUT... the evident opinions about abortion; sex - especially promiscuous, unmarried sex; drugs; violence; etc; in Hollywood (evident by what is shown in movies and TV serials) and the different opinions on these subjects in much of America - particularly "Red States" (what a "coincidence" that is!) makes it seem like Hollywood is transplanted here from somewhere else.

I have to agree with him on this point: If I were one of the more hard-working, faithful-to-my-wife, loving-to-my-children, no-swear-words, no-drugs, honestly-trying-to-live-up-to-religious-values-taught-in-my-faith (any variety of Judaism, Christianity, or Islam that I've heard of) - then I would be thoroughly offended by most (75% - 90%) of what I see on American TV and in American movies. (Yes, I am offended right now by the trash that cable companies expect me to pay for. Yes, I do find it "poisonous". I don't usually use that word to describe it, but it certainly fits.)

The New World Order vs Islamofacism
Quote from: President George Bush in his state of the Union Address 1-16-91:

"A New World Order, it is a big idea, where diverse nations are drawn together in common cause to achieve the universal aspirations of mankind: peace and security, freedom, and the rule of law. Such is a world worthy of our struggle, and worthy of our children's future. --

Quote from: Osama bin Laden, Fatwa Against America 2-23-98

"First, for over seven years the United States has been occupying the lands of Islam in the holiest of places, the Arabian Peninsula, plundering its riches, dictating to its rulers, humiliating its people, terrorizing its neighbors, and turning its bases in the Peninsula into a spearhead through which to fight the neighboring Muslim peoples.

If some people have in the past argued about the fact of the occupation, all the people of the Peninsula have now acknowledged it.

The best proof of this is the Americans' continuing aggression against the Iraqi people using the Peninsula as a staging post, even though all its rulers are against their territories being used to that end, but they are helpless. Second, despite the great devastation inflicted on the Iraqi people by the crusader-Zionist alliance, and despite the huge number of those killed, which has exceeded 1 million... despite all this, the Americans are once against trying to repeat the horrific massacres, as though they are not content with the protracted blockade imposed after the ferocious war or the fragmentation and devastation.

So here they come to annihilate what is left of this people and to humiliate their Muslim neighbors.

Third, if the Americans' aims behind these wars are religious and economic, the aim is also to serve the Jews' petty state and divert attention from its occupation of Jerusalem and murder of Muslims there.

The best proof of this is their eagerness to destroy Iraq, the strongest neighboring Arab state, and their endeavor to fragment all the states of the region such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Sudan into paper statelets and through their disunion and weakness to guarantee Israel's survival and the continuation of the brutal crusade occupation of the Peninsula.

All these crimes and sins committed by the Americans are a clear declaration of war on God, his messenger, and Muslims. And ulema have throughout Islamic history unanimously agreed that the jihad is an individual duty if the enemy destroys the Muslim countries. This was revealed by Imam Bin-Qadamah in "Al- Mughni," Imam al-Kisa'i in "Al- Bada'i," al-Qurtubi in his interpretation, and the shaykh of al-Islam [not further identified] in his books, where he said "As for the fighting to repulse [an enemy], it is aimed at defending sanctity and religion, and it is a duty as agreed [by the ulema]. Nothing is more sacred than belief except repulsing an enemy who is attacking religion and life."

I would suggest that the reason for hatred against america has a lot to do with race, religion and imperialism.

President Bush#1 suggest a NEW WORLD ORDER OF NATIONS LED BY AMERICANS which suggest WORLDWIDE WHITE MALE SUPREMECY...

Osama Bin Laden suggest a JIHAD AGAINST THE NEW WORLD ORDER LED BY MUSLIMS (people of color)...

It is a clash of cultures that could very well lead to the anihilation of either group or both.

Krauthammer
Charles Krauthammer had a great article entitled "To Hell with Sympathy" a few years back describing the short lived goodwill extended to us after 9/11 and how quickly it was retracted when we went on the offensive. "The world apparently likes the U.S. when it is on its knees. From that the Democrats deduce a foreign policy — remain on our knees, humble and supplicant, and enjoy the applause and "support" of the world...Sympathy is fine. But if we "squander" it when we go to war to avenge our dead and prevent the next crop of dead, then to hell with sympathy"

It's All So Simple
How could we have missed it? The all-seeing and all-knowing Tanabear and Phylo have it all figured out (by the way, it must be one hell of a burden being so perfect while having to suffer so many of the great unwashed all about you). Our troubles will end when GW departs the White House. The "world" will start loving us again, the Islamists will discard over a thousand years of killing the infidel, the Twin Towers of the WTC will suddenly rise again, the 3000 people killed on 9/11/01 will suddenly come to back to life, and the big bad US will stop "exploiting" the rest of the world. Thanks, you guys. I can't wait.

Here We Go - Xenophobic Drum Banging
Let me declare myself - Im a Brit.

As most of you blinkered, xenophobic morons (Skip, Audi, Uncle Max take a bow) will never have ventured out of Dipshit Ohio (22% only have a passport - yeah Im sure you'll say because you dont want to go abroad - fine just shut up moaning about stuff you dont know), you comment from complete ignorance.

This type of article always puzzles me. They crop up a couple of times a month. Why a country like the US should CARE what people thing of you says more about you than it does us. Trust me, I'd see a shrink if I were you, I hear you yanks love them.

I cannot comment for all the world, but the UK likes you, we are in the middle east with you getting shot less you forget. Again (WW1/WW2 etc).

But most of Europe, and unlike you I travel, doesnt give a flying hoot either way whether they love or hate you. Just in the same way they dont love or hate Sri Lanka.

Policitcally we work together. Any idea why that is? Skip?

Clearly not, let me tell you. Because unlike the jingiostic replies here, we do not live in mud huts relying on US handouts, we have some of the most powerful economies in the world. And you arent the architect or the providers...I know that will hurt you. Get over it.

Oh oh, I know someone will mention The Marshall Plan and "saving our assess". Its a favourite theme of some of your moronic countrymen. Firstly we were there losing millions as were many other nations. You will no doubt shout that we wouldnt have won without you. You are right, but for you geographically challenged yanks go look at the size of Britain. Then look at Maryland. WOW. So the statement should be from you lot is admiration we held on agains mainland Europe so long while you were doing NOTHING for over two years.

Get over it. I dont go on about how we beat the French ar Agincourt. Who cares, its history. You yanke cannot get your heads round complex things like we won in COLLABORATION, JOINTLY, TOGETHER. Can you? Im guessing its something in your psyche that gives you a superiority complex.

Anyway to end. Calm down. Not everyone hates you. For example we, the Brits go places to fight, give aid copiously. We dont need thanking, like you seem to - NRAlifer you listening? You may need people to be your puppets vbecause you help out in a disaster, but we know that this planet is populated by all types of people. Many not lucky to live like you and I, and its not their falut.

I dont expect many of you to understand or agree with me. Thank goodness the vast majority of americans are not like you.

America Hatred?
Is it possible to be critical of American policy without "hating America?" This has to be one of the most simple-minded formulations to come from the Right.

When your brother drinks too much alcohol and you are critical of his drinking, do you hate your brother? When your country engages in an ill-conceived preemptive war and you are critical of that policy do you hate America? No! Does George Will hate America because he is critical of this administration? What about William F. Buckley, does he hate America too? Does Joe Scarborough hate America? What about Pat Buchanan, does he hate America?

Show me the Americans who hate America. You can count them on one hand. Show me a quote where an American says he or she hates America. Show me a political figure that says they hate America. This is a STRAW MAN. Instead of debating Iraq or Katrina or wiretapping, demagogues claim that Liberals and those who disagree with this administration "hate america." Show me. Show me who hates America and when they said it. Do the Liberals who work and pay taxes and vote and raise their children here "hate America?" Or do they simply disagree with you?

Also, think for a second about the kind of people you encounter in your daily lives who claim that people are jealous or envious of them (As Medved claims "America Haters" feel about this country). What kinds of people make these claims? In my experience, the people that claim that others are jealous of them are usually blind to their own faults and deficiences. It is usually the obnoxious and the arrogant who claim that people are jealous. Never have I heard someone who actually might have reason to think people are jealous, make such a claim. It is always the people who cannot see their own faults who claim that others are jealous. This is not the claim of a serious, reasonable, or sincere person. I lived with a woman once who had one of the worst personality I have come across to date. She constantly complained that other women at her gym were mean to her because they were jealous. It never occurred to her (or maybe it did and she couldn't acknowledge it) that people were mean to her because she was a . . . you get the point.

Mr. Medved's article
Mr. Medved correctly identifies an appropriate variety of issues related to why they hate us, with one glaring ommission. It is true we have exported all manner of cultural issues to the world in general. However, the most significant export over the past 50 years has been security. Europe, Central and South America, Japan and the list goes on. No one likes being "saved" even when it is for the better.

It may also be the ultimate geo-political irony that the security blanked we threw over post WWII Europe has resulted in their freedom to adopt socalist and communist political orientation as the dominant movements in their political systems.

DEL

Who Hates America you ask?
People like Michael Moore who goes abroad to talk about how stupid Americans are, people like Ward Churchill who say the "little Eichmans" deserved to die in the WTC, people like Cindy Sheehan who would rather go live with Chavez. And while they may not "hate" I don't see how the New York Times is being patriotic leaking out information of legal programs that actually help us catch terrorists and putting their fellow countrymen at risk. The pattern here? They are all defended to the death by the left.

"Popular Culture" Nonsense
I have no more patience with "conservative" anti-Americans who excuse evil ("oh, but you have to understand, they hate us for our decadence") than I do for leftist nitwits who make the exact same argument ("oh, but you have to understand, they hate us for our greed").

Excusing clitoridectomy and "honor" murder as merely "restrictive" or "puritanical" is revolting, and Medved should be ashamed of himself.

Envy
Envy plays a bigger part than you might think. Learn some European history: Germany and Italy were divided. Germany, in particular, provides an illustration: what is now Germany consisted of hundreds of little fiefdoms - some as small as a couple of square miles - squabbling with each other. The Protestant Reformation added some gasoline (figuratively) to the powder keg.
Each Baron, Duke, Earl, and Count - many of whom called themselves "King" - was either Roman Catholic or Protestant (nearly all the Protestants among them were Lutherans), and the Protestants considered the Catholics to be heretics; the Catholics considered the Protestants to be heretics. Each variety of Christianity encouraged its members to try to persuade the members of the other variety to repent and switch from Protestant to Catholic, or from Catholic to Protestant. In practice, the "persuasion" from either side often came at the point of a sword.

When Napoleon conquered Europe, he had to slow down a bit going through what is now Germany: each Noble - or "King" - had to be conquered separately, and sign an individual treaty. When he had finished with what is now Germany, he looked at his map of Europe and decided that it would be a nightmare to administer - and he cared little for the Protestant-Catholic issues. He started consolidating these little "kingdoms" - where the local ruler had put up little resistance, Napoleon gave him control of the neighboring "kingdoms" that had fought harder. In this way he rewarded those that accepted Napoleon's rule more quickly. AFTER these cosolidations, he had three hundred German "kingdoms" left to work with. I'm not certain how many there were BEFORE he started conquering them, but obviously many more than 300.

Meanwhile, France, Spain, Portugal, England, and the Netherlands were getting quite wealthy from their colonies around the world, whether from gold, silver, or jewels they got from their colonies, or from slave labor, imports of spices, or other goods.

Italy was divided up something like Germany, although not as many little "kingdoms".

Japan (alright, not part of Europe, but beginning to trade with the rest of the world) had shut itself off from the rest of the world until 1850, when some American Naval commander (I'm sorry, I don't remember his name or his exact rank) showed up in Tokyo harbor with a fleet of ships armed with cannons - Japan had not discovered gunpowder yet - and showed the emperor what he could do in terms of destruction. By this means he persuaded the emperor that it would be in his best interest to open up Japan to international trade.

In 1870 and 1871 - I forget which one in which year - Germany and Italy unified themselves, and one major motivation was to cash in on some of this colonial riches idea. Sorry, most of the world was already taken. As far as envy, I believe that it's not just a coincidence that Germany, Italy, and Japan felt cheated, not really by the USA, but mostly by Western Europe - and they allied themselves together, led by Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito.

Envy (or jealousy, or covetousness, if you prefer) is a more powerful lever on human behavior than you might have thought. Probably why it rates mention in the Ten Commandments.

Everyone hates the big dog...
...on the block.

That is, unless, like Clinton, that big dog decides to start giving all sorts of free stuff to the little guys to keep them happy.

The rest of the world loved Clinton because he was busy stealing from the US Treasury to hand freebies out to the rest of the world, and turning a blind eye to every misdeed every other corrupt regime ever committed.

Bush does give the occasional freebie, but nowhere near the level that Clinton did, so the rest of the world is no longer being bought off.

We're the Big Dog. Everyone else is just desperate for a share of the attention. The rest of the world knows that what we do, and what happens to us, more significantly effects the entore planet than anything else. All of Asia could fall into the ocean, and that wouldn't have even half of the effect on the entire planetary economy as a prolonged recession in the United States.

The bottom line is that when the Big Dog fails to buy off all the unimportant plebes of the world, those plebes fall back to their default position of resenting the Big Dog.

I disagree with Mr Medved
The world does not hate America. Even liberal Dems don't hate America. However, many people of many races and classes hate specific aspects of America.

Fundamentalist / Facist Islam hates America because of our religious tolerance, because of our movies and TV, because of our support of human rights, because of our gays, and because of our support of Israel. This will not change regardless of our leadership.

Socialist/communist states such as Cuba, Venezuela, et al hate us because we demonstrate the bankruptcy of their policies and plans. We show what a free nation can do.

Tyranies hate us because we are free and make their population restive. We also send support to those populations.

The French hate us (mainly the Parisians BTW) because to them France is the center of the universe. The French language is the most beautiful, French culture is most refined, etc. Unfortunately, they now have our movies, tv, food venues, entertainment, and even our words entering their language. This is intollerable. I saw this hatred in 1972 and again last year in Paris. When they found out I was American they were almost uniformly rude. One other thing to remember about "old" Europe. They are greatly stratified. The caste system is alive and well. The pesants don't care but the elite hate us because we demonstrate that they are not the power they want to be.

Finally, the DemLibs don't hate America. They hate the Republicans because the Republicans took away their power. The DemLibs believe that Roosevelt put them in a position of rulership and that if they lost that position, it was because the Republicans lied and cheated. While they don't hate America, they are willing to see it destroyed in order to bring down those evil Repubs.

Medved's comments and most of those in the comments, are as outdated as the movie reference. Our popular culture has been decadent for decades for much of the world. The envy thing is becoming less of a factor as our technology has become difused around the world. Our track record of innovation is being eclipsed due to domination of the large corporations and increased patent and copyright controls.

The legacy of communism? Medved paints that as a quaint notion in Latin America and the old USSR. I see communism as our banker and number one supplier of manufactured goods, as well as the biggest player in control of two members or our "axis of evil", North Korea and Iran. The communists quest for resources are expanding that contol to anywhere there are resources for sale whether it be oil the middle east, latin america or Canada. To lump Beijing in with Cuba is an extreme oversight. China is crafting a new style of communism and is increasingly running the show. And we still think we are in charge.

We have become a joke diplomatically. Leaders who GW supports are falling by the wayside. Economically we depend on China to float our debt. Innovation is moving to Israel, China, India and elsewhere. We are now told daily to be afraid of some two bit third world dictators and cave dwellers. Our infrastructure, largely built in the 50s is failing and we cling to our 1950s view of warfare like we do to our internal combustion engines. How many wars have we won since WWII. If you want to see some impressive growth, application of technology and infrastructure development, take a look at China. Our concern should not be the raging hordes or the cave dwellers but the specter of irrelevancy.

Left Angle
Your "logic" and arguments are sick. You are apologizing for Osama? Why don't you go to a foreign country (France, even) and live there if you think this country is so "Islamophobic"?
I actually find your commments frightening. Your use of Muslim propoganda that isn't even close to the truth, scares me. If you want to call that Islamophobia, so be it.
Idopas -- I am an American that HAS been to Europe, and I LOVED England, by the way. I DO acknowledge that you Brits suffer from envy from the Continent and the other non-free countries as well. I know, however, in Germany and France, the majority of people dislike and dispise the USA and it's government. I still think it's because of the negative propoganda and lies that are told to their people -- like the lies that Left Angle believes. My relatives in Germany who have come here are pleasantly surprised that the images from their news are SO UNLIKE the reality when they come here.

Is anything like this in your city?
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/05/12/china_wonders/index_01.htm
or for infrastucture.

Propaganda? Maybe, the second one is a World Bank project and we know who runs that outfit.

Hi. I'm very interested in your views about our great country, because I have relatives in Germany, and my heritage is from an eastern part of Germany that is now Poland. It seems that the Eastern European immigrants are some of the most patriotic Americans I have seen, because they know what it's like to live under oppression and tyranny. Your story, in a nutshell would be very interesting to me.

Rightmindedmom: READ & COMPREHEND
the topic is:

"Why the World hates America"

The quote i took from O. bin laden explains EXACTLY Why Radical Muslims HATE AMERICA.

The quote from Prez Bush#1 on the New World Order
explains what path he and his followers hope to take the U.S. in the future.

It CLASHES with bin laden which = WAR..

COMPRENDE?

nowhere in my post did i say i agree with or am apologizing for bin laden. in fact read the last sentence of my post..I suggest you research NEW WORLD ORDER.

As for greed, I like it no more than I do decadence. But Hollywood's decadence really sticks out; as for our greed, I believe that we're no more guilty than many other countries. How about Saddam Hussein's corruption with the Oil-for-Food program? It seems that he arranged kick-backs, took the profit for himself, his two sons, and their lavish lifestyle, and most if not all of the food went to his soldiers, not to the starving millions in Iraq.

One of his sons' palaces was found to have a room with pictures of naked women - mostly American movie stars, as I recall - all over the walls, and the same room was stocked with expensive cigars and expensive wines. Did you know about Islamic prohibitions concerning women and modesty? That's why there's such a big deal about women wearing veils ANY time they're in public. Did you know about the Islamic prohibition concerning alcohol?

One of Saddam's sons spits on Islam this way and the rest of the Islamic world should just look the other way, hmm? The starving millions that people all over the world wanted to help feed - well, they're just going to die anyway the next time Saddam wants to test one of his new poison gas weapons, right?

France and Russia, it later turned out, had loaned a few milion to Saddam, and were worried that they might lose their investment if we invaded, when they were persistently voting in 2002 and 2003 in the UN against invadinng Iraq. Oh, but they weren't motivated by anything like greed, were they? Oh, nooooo.

As for "Excusing clitoridectomy - I find this absolutely hideous, but:
(1) where did Mr. Medved say ANYthing about clitoridectomy? The only times I recall this being mentioned, it was being practiced by some Moslems in some parts of Africa. What does it have to do with Iraq? When/where would we be excusing it?
(2) As for "honor" murder as merely "restrictive" or "puritanical" - I understand the motive to maintain fidelity to one's faith, but I think that killing my child because s/he has converted to another religion, is going too far. However, this is the standard in many (all?) Moslem countries, so I understand. (I believe that this is what you mean by "honor murder".)

Yes, the multiple posts seem to be related to a database connection error I recieved. The error message I recieved indicated some serious problems with this right wing web site and resulted in double posts from one submission. Perhaps you should dedicate your obvious intellect to repair this problem. I am sure the webmaster would welcome your brillant conversation and the database logs will clue you into the problem.

Michael Medved is right on the money

But being a heresyarch, I would go a step farther and claim that hatred of America may be God's way of using America's enemies to punish America for its numerous sins...abortion.....deifying government........unrestrained licentiousness...etc....God haven given so much and we have shown God so little appreciation.

Michael mentions how other nations family morality would almost seen "Puritanical" compared to the disfunctional family in the US. But he doesn't go as far as claiming that God would judge us our unrestrained sins, as I am, despite he being an orthodox Jew, and the Torah being FULL of stories of God using Israel's enemies to discipline/judge/punish Israel.

That statement should generate controversy.
Just remember, its one heresyarch's opinion, and according to modern mind, I am a arch-heretic.

ldopas
Wish I could meet you one-on-one...in cyberspace or in person. I sense a somewhat kindred spirit. Not that I would necessarily agree with you but tipping a pint or two (isn't that your idiom for having a few drinks?) might be fun.

But on this topic, I understand that most Brits don't hate America. My experience with Brits, Canadians, and Australians is that your attitude toward us is as toward an exuberant, sometimes foolish and ill-behaved, exasperating cousin. This doesn't bother me at all; if anything, I find it a bit amusing but generally correct.

homegrown Anti-American sentiment
Sadly, I don't think that homegrown Anti-American sentiment is new, but what is is its pervasiveness in the "mainstream" media and the popularity it receives now amongst radical wannabes and old timers who want to relive the glory days of Anti Vietnam War riots or to be a part of some kind of new antigovernment movement.

During WWII the movie "Saboteur" by Alfred Hitch_ock was released. This movie reveals that even during that war subversion, or suspicion of subversion existed, just not in the vituperative, in-your-face manner it is done now.

Will this attitude within our country change? I can't see how when you have popular culture promoting it, public school teachers and their texts pushing it, and the higher academic professors lauding the failed (but apparently endearing) Marxist idieology.

Et tu Brute?

This article.
"Remember, the famous French Revolution proved so feckless in this regard that the frog-eaters anointed an all-powerful Emperor (Napoleon) less than twenty years after they guillotined their king. "

Frog-eater's? I wonder at the maturity of this writer.

"In terms of commercial activity and living standards, the United States remains the indefatigable engine that drives the world economy, with productivity and ingenuity as indispensable to sustaining global prosperity as American agricultural bounty is essential to feeding all of humanity."

This is incorrect. Let's say if you were to apply for a loan today, the loan officer would take your total income, plus assets and minus the debt you have to equal your total net worth. If you calculated this for the US, we would be beat by the E.U., China, and Japan. As to feeding all humanity, that is incorrect as well, South America has by far larger exports of foodstuffs than we do. We export mainly services, not goods anymore.

"If, then, the most outspoken advocates of America Hatred have seldom suffered personally at the hands of the nation they loathe, how can we understand their implacable hostility? "

What about all the soldiers who have been killed in Afganistan and Iraq? (Many of them are among the protestors to our current foreign policy) What about the aid workers and security personel for the oil companies that have been killed in IRaq? What about the victims of Katrina who couldn't get aid because our National Guard was over in the Middle East fighting?

"In the same way that the most successful kid in school will generate considerable resentment, or the most prominent and prosperous citizen of a town will provoke hostility from some of his less fortunate neighbors, the US draws anger and condemnation precisely because of its overwhelming power and influence"

What is this??? You cannot attribute a blanket statement like that for the rest of the 6 billion people who live on this planet. I'm not saying the rest of the world is right, corruption and evil is everywhere, but you can't give the US government carte blanche to do anything they want because you think they are the good guys.

"Among America-haters within the USA, their jealousy is directed at presently powerful major institutions (the military, the corporations, the Republican Party, conservative religious groups) and the “great unwashed” who support them"

The great unwashed?Does that mean the poor, or just those who don't adhere to your religion?

"Made-in-America movies, TV shows, popular music, fast food and fashion trends remain this nation’s most successful exports to the rest of humanity"

I think this is hilarious! Have you ever looked at the statistics of movie gross sales worldwide? Take any big box office hit: 99% of thier gross sales are in the US. India rarely watches our movies because they have Bollywood. Most of our movies are banned in France because of the violence content. China bans our movies and people in the middle East wouldn't dare show our movies. The EU mainly sees the BBC produtions and only a small protion of Japanese watch American films (they actually export a lot of films to the US, just turn on your Saturday morning cartoons, they are all Japanese anamation studios.

"Political historian Michael Barone recently identified such leaders as “our covert enemies” who have “been working, over many years, to undermine faith in our society and confidence in its goodness…. Our covert enemies don’t want the Islamo-fascists to win. But in some corner of their hearts they would like us to lose.”

If we're going to be non-factual and unprofessional here, I would like to add my personal opinion. I think Michael Barone is smoking crack! First of all, I attend non-violence and peace oragnizations and none of them, I repeat none of them, want the terrorists to win. We want to stop the violence on all sides. How about not buying oil? How about taking a different approch to our foreign policy? Why can't we dissent and not want the down fall of the US? Last time I heard, we were in a democracy and had a right to question the way our government conducts itself. If that is terrorism, then America no longer exists. This has just becom a totalitarian state! Don't pick on those who want to stop the violence, look to those who would create it.

"Understanding and confronting America Hatred wherever it occurs, around the world but most importantly here at home, will help to insure that these potentially dangerous enemies never get their secret wish."

You and your article are biased and ignorant. Just because someone wants to stop the war or question the motives of thier government officials, it certainly does not make then a "hater" of America. I would think perhaps it would mean they love America. Would the women who argued that they had a right to vote in the early 20th century, haters of America? What about the civil rights movement, what about the kids that didn't want to go to Vietnam? Do they hate America? Honestly, you should look at the logic of this article.

Why America is Hated
Somewhat disappointing article from Michael, rather shallow analysis. One key reason for the hatred of America barely touched on is the fundamental Islamic view of morality. The fanaticil Islamic desire to destroy America is fuel in part by their view of Americas moral decadance. Another reason is Americas meddling in the Middle East for so many years to ensure our supply of oil.

The Distinctly Advantaged
I found your article interesting and thoughtful. One thing I have noticed, however, is that the most fervent anti-American people who were born and raised here have two things in common: they were in their 20s during the 60s and they have some "connections" which provide them with guaranteed success or favors. As to the first, it appears that those who were young adults during the 60s see this anti-Americanism as a social activity, almost like enjoying certain entertainment or activities. America bashing (without much substance or nuance) is not only accepted, but it is assumed. It is a sport where the "home team" is anyone who can criticize this country and they in fact start with the assumption that if America has a position, it must be wrong and its soldiers and/or representatives must be evil. When questioning the reasoning behind this position, it becomes clear that it is not thought out at all. The supporting "analysis" involves name-calling (Bush is stupid, a moron, privileged, rich, a drunk) or reflexive (soldiers are bad, we are greedy, other people don't like us, we are stupid). After probing these position for supporting facts or data, I have found that their positions lack any further thought. The second characteristic that I have found is that each person that I have encountered with this anti-American predisposition have some type of "clout" or advantage providing him or her with an opportunity for success without having to prove himself or herself. I have deliberately included both genders because I have seen the same thing in each sex. Typically this person is able to obtain employment or gain advancement without having to put it on the line. This person does in fact work, however, unlike for the rest of us, the outcome is certain. They are guaranteed some measure of success. Perhaps it is being denied the satisfaction that comes from accomplishment that makes them envious of the hardworking Americans who put themselves out there everyday and derive a sense of joy and satisfaction from having to prove themselves. Just a thought.

Question for Mr. Medved...
“If not for the United States, which nation might have inspired the world to pursue self-government and human rights?” –Michael Medved

Mr. Medved, thank you for this statement.

We would like to get your take on the difference between the American and French Revolutions. Why did the French end in anarchy and totalitarian rule while America ended with personal liberty under limited government?

Hatred
I disagree with Mr. Medved.

“Men will always be mad, and those who think they can cure them are the maddest of all.” —Voltaire

“The disease of America Hatred now has reached pandemic proportions in many corners of the globe, spreading far beyond the predictably hopeless fever swamps of Islamic militants, French intellectuals, or Latin American demagogues. In fact, many citizens within the USA itself energetically embrace the basic assumptions of America Hatred, perceiving their country as an unequivocally negative force on the world scene.”

While I certainly don’t agree with Mr. John Tirman that the world would have been better served if America had not been colonized, hatred of America this is not a true false question.
The question is, would the world be better off if we kept or noses in our own business. Whether or not our support of despots all over the world put us in good stead, not only with the specific areas, but with others as well because of a perception that we made up the rules as we went along, just because we had the bomb or the were weaker than we.

We are worried about democracy in Iraq but not here at home? Why doesn’t the government do what it was established to do, one of which is to protect our borders. What should have been added is “always do the right thing and tell the American people the truth.” Who inspired the world to pursue self-government and human rights? Everybody or just the weaker ones?

“In terms of commercial activity and living standards, the United States remains the indefatigable engine that drives the world economy…” (at a cost of 2 billion a day added to our debt total. That’s just the government.) If American agricultural bounty is essential to feeding all of humanity, why do we pay people not to plant? Is this a true – false question?

Another take
Well said c. The whole world does not hates us. Portions of the Islamic world hates us and we are encouraged to hate each other in forums like this, but of the 6.5 billion people in the world we really do not matter.

I personally feel no threat from what is going on in the Middle East. It is the reponse of our government that directly effects me. I don't fly anymore because of the hassle, I see money going to homeland security related activities and expensive wars in Iraq while gang violence is rapidly increasing in my city. I see billions wasted on infrastructure projects that do not work or fall apart like the Big-dig. I see the country ignoring our health care and now we are expected to take care of millions of illegal aliens. I see an aging population with no savings and the government prepared to pull the plug on the only thread of hope these people will have in old age.
I am appalled that we are so afraid that we scramble fighter jets because a woman peed on the floor. Most don't hate us, most are laughing at us.

Why World Hates America
What is puzzling is why Medved is writing articles on feelings adolescents have regarding America.

As others have asked, Who Cares?

The adolescents of the West, which include American liberals, the UN, nearly all of Western Europe and certainly Canada, live under standard adolsecent mythology: everything has always been as it is, and everything always will remain as it is. (This is why we all have a cow over the price of gas, for example - it's more expensive than when we first became aware of it (as adolescents) even though the cost of everything else has increased tenfold and gas merely is catching up.)

Western Civ as it exists today (post-WWII) has existed only since 1945 (obviously). It is in this timeframe that diseases have been cured, peoples fed by Western advances in farming (Green Revlution of the 40s and 50s), computers invented, communications taken huge leaps forward, etc. Adolsecents think this all is normal and has always been around. And will never change.

Like Liberals who think the world always has been peaceful and the rights and liberties of Western Civ always have been prevalent everywhere.

Like Liberals who find it "good" to protect recently-discovered paleolithic peoples in the Amazon or New Guinea, regardless of the fact we haven't discovered them before because they are wracked by diseases and infant mortality - but we can't help them, we'd be intruding on their prehistoric lifestyles and bringing them food, medicine, etc. As though our million-year-march to leisure time, books, communications, stored food, travel, etc., ought to be denied these peoples so they can be a living, breathing, dying-young museum for the leftists on their eco-tours.

But of course thinking people know better. We also understand that there is nothing either divine or inevitable about the West. It can go in a historical heartbeat if not protected and defended.

If there are those who benefit greatly from Western Civ, but who seem to mind not-at-all that it's in trouble, who in fact want to destroy the only guarantor of Western liberties and liberal traditions, who cares about them and their opinions? They are too silly and adolescent to take seriously.

Medved ought to spend time on pointing out the value of Western Civ, particularly the value placed on it by those attacking it the most, and stop being lazy by noting that some idiots feel badly about us.

Who cares?

Why The World Hates America
Another aspect of envy is America's sovereignty.
We are not dependent on, nor are we dictated by UN socialists. As far as domestic hatred goes I do think he nailed it when he mentioned that its promoted in our schools, universities as well as pop-culture. They are dominated with these long haired, no bathing, sixties want to be throw-backs, terrorist sympathizing, liberal commies, who have an agenda.

Convince me I should care
We are the civilized ones. They should and do want to emulate us. If not why the 12,000,000 lawbreakers who snuck into the US to be part of the American dream. It is envy and cowardice that fuels these feelings. They are too afraid to speak truth to power in their own Middle Eastern states where they will be killed so they hate us since there are no consequences. Saddam and the Taliban killed most of the heros. Now we have heros trying to stand up in Iraq as part of their unity government and our democratic politicians disparage them and put them in danger for fear of lack of support from us. That's cowardice here at home.

C -- Open your eyes...

"C" writes, "If we're going to be non-factual and unprofessional here, I would like to add my personal opinion."

Liberals (like you) seem to have a penchant for transferring your words and actions unto others. How about providing a little supporting data to your talking points?

The U.S. is both the largest exporter (nearly 20% of the worlds exports), as well as, the largest importer of agricultural goods in the world. Look it up… If anything China may outpace us by the year 2010.

BTW - The United States is a country; South America is a continent. Thought you might want to take that into consideration, when you go looking for your supporting documentation. Parroting talking points is for bird brains. Do some independent research before posting.

Response to Idopas
"Let me declare myself - Im a Brit.
As most of you blinkered, xenophobic morons. . ."

Can you feel the Love?

"This type of article always puzzles me. They crop up a couple of times a month. Why a country like the US should CARE what people thing of you says more about you than it does us. Trust me, I'd see a shrink if I were you, I hear you yanks love them."

Why should we CARE what you think?

I cannot comment for all the world, but the UK likes you, . . .

Except for the Asian (read Muslim) parts.

"You yanks cannot get your heads round complex things . . . "

Again I feel the love. No doubt we are fortunate to have YOU to lead the way.

What a condescending load of tripe!

Curious
A lot of people hated Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia too but no one was breaking down the doors to live there. Quite the opposite. With the US we have jerks like Tirman (I wonder if he blacks out and faints like his MIT colleague, Nancy Hopkins, does?) hating our country and condemning it when we can't even close our own borders because so many people want to get in.
If I had to decide who to believe, Mr Tirman with his intellectual nonsense or the people who are risking their lives to get in here, I'd go with the people who are putting their lives on the line.
Mr Tirman needs to get out in the world, maybe live in China or Russia for a while.

why? wrong question
America is not hated at all.

As far as I have noticed in my travael, very few hate America, or even the United States. Its science is admired everywhere, and its freedom is admired even more by those that have never been there.

What is hated, however, is to be on the receiving end of a bullet or a bomb, or of insensitive agressive actions - even when they come from US government actions. Foreigners do not owe allegiance to the US whatever its actions.

You could ask why the US government is hated IN SOME CIRCLES, rightly or wrongly, but as I said, the US and what it stand for is not hated.

Hatred for America(ns)
They do love our money, though. Most things in life are economically driven. The most important thing is getting food, clothing & shelter and getting the money to obtain said items.

America is the richest country on the planet by far. The reason is that we operate as a FREE-MARKET CAPITALIST country, relatively free of governmental controls.

Our "poor" have more equity than some "rich" have in other countries. Those "rich" want a piece of our pie. I say let 'em eat cake.

c
The post actually proves Medved's point. LOL. Katrina victims couldn't be helped because the LA National Guard was in Iraq - that's right out of the leftist talking points. It's propaganda.

One thing about posts: Generally, the longer they are, the lefter they are.

Idopas,
This type of article is a response to the leftist in our country..who frequently wail and bemoan the 'fact' that the rest of the world hates us. The left then tell us the reason for the 'hate' is the policies of the right, and therefore all we need to do to solve the problem is to elect them to lead the country. Medved is attempting to counter this.

As to your other points:

I don't think you'll find too many people here who think the Brits are living in mud huts...but somehow I also don't think you really believe that, either.

Your assertion that we have a "superiority complex" for "saving your asses" is a little amusing...especially when you consider that there is not a Brit I've spoken to on the subject of WWII who doesn't still resent that we "were doing NOTHING for over two years" as you said. It comes up without fail, and you did not disappoint. Does this not imply that you feel that we owed it to you to come "save your asses" and that we were wrong to stay out of your war for the first few years?

I think you'll find that it is this attitude that we have a problem with. We are vilified as evil 'war mongers' by Europe EXCEPT for when we are lax in our 'duties' to come wage war on YOUR behalf. You don't hear us bringing up "saving your asses" in a vacumn. It is in response to exactly this attitude that you will hear this. I think it's pretty reasonable.

The world's attitude towards the US
isn't the barometer by which I judge where we stand. It's our own young people's attitudes which concern me more.

It's interesting that of all of the critics of Medved's analysis, none have mentioned his second point, which I believe to be the dominant reason for the current sad state of affairs within our own borders.

When the Soviet Union "fell" the first thing I thought was that the Devil no longer needed it on the world stage because its negative influence had now effectively insinuated itself into Western thought so effectively that it was only a matter of time until its dissolution.

As far as the rest of the world's attitude goes, they simply smell a wounded animal. Whether or not that animal dies is up to us.

c

c: "The great unwashed?Does that mean the poor, or just those who don't adhere to your religion"

c, c, c,. You show a remarkable lack of understanding. Perhaps you should go back to school. Does anyone care to help c understand what Medved was referring to here?

c also seems to be laboring under the impression that it is a rarity to see the products of Hollywood outside of the U.S. Yes, c, they've hardly heard of us out there.

c also thinks peace protests are only about ending violence. c, I take it you have access to the internet. I suggest you do a little research. Look up A.N.S.W.E.R. See if you can discover their history and what they advocate. Look up Code Pink and do the same. Then look up pictures and video's taken at 'peace protests' from any site that is not MSM or leftest and examine the signs being waved and listen to what is said. Then consider what people like yourself, who have done so little to allieviate your ignorance before supporting these groups, are providing for them.

c worries about "What about the victims of Katrina who couldn't get aid because our National Guard was over in the Middle East fighting?"

c, as a resident of the area, I think the fact that our great democrat governor, Kathleen Blanco, issued an order to NOT allow supplies to be brought in has a little more to do with it. Our great democrat governor did not wish to make matters worse by 'encouraging people to stay'. She thought it would be better, after the hurricane, to 'encourage people to leave' by making it clear that they could not survive if they stayed. Luckily, Walmart took it upon themselves to break state police blockades and trucked water and other supplies in regardless of our democrat governor's wishes. Of course, our state police confiscated many of the trucks, but some got through.

I think it's great that you want to question our government. Perhaps you would do better to understand the issues you are questioning first, though. It would also help if you didn't take the MSM and demcratic talking points as gospel. You'll find that gathering your information from more varied sources greatly increases the chance that the information you gather is worth a sh*t.

I'm back
Idopas - Thanks for the compliment - consider the bow taken.

Beowulfe - everyone hates the big dog. Good point.

You brits - thanks for the help and for P.G. Wodehouse and Foyle's War, just to name a few things.

It seems to me that every time such a subject comes up the left takes as its starting point the assumption that if they do hate us it must be our fault. This does not make for good debating and leads very quickly to much hate and discontent, hurt feelings and probably ulcers down the road - either the right ulcer or the left ulcer.

so - everybody breath in and think squinky thoughts for a moment or two.

(Where did the word "squinky" come from, I hear you ask. Remember Zap Comics? That's where.)

{All former hippies -

1) what does it all mean?
2) who first asked this question and 3) of whom?
4) what was the immortal reply?}

Everybody out there from beyond our shores - howyadoin'? Come on in and set a spell, have some lemonade. How do you like this thing Al Gore invented called the internet? Pretty cool, is it not? (By the way the U.N. wants to take it over.)

Pearl Harbor.....George Bush's Fault
I agree with tanabear, Phylo Se Fizer, Left Angle, Hasan, C, Tubbs, modernone and Jerry.

All the sins of the world rest on one shoulder, George Bush. There would be peace in our time. Cancer cured. Gas would be under a dollar a gallon. Pigs would fly. The lion would lie with the lamb. The blind would see. Little boys would not fight, for Billy would have two mommys to watch over him. 75% of our electrical power would be from solar. McDonalds would be a soy fast food joint. There would be no materialism. There would be no religious fighting, for we would all be followers of Islam.
The cubs would finally win a world series. And Pearly Harbor would never had occurred.

All the bad in the world, and the lack of goodness in the world................the result of one man. An evil man. The son of Satan. George Bush.

a solution
Let's work to put the most right-wing, ideological people around in office this fall, and in the succeeding election. Then, we can make any form of criticism against American policy illegal and even set up prisons, or camps, for coll;ege professors, journalists, democrats, main-stream christians, and liberals. It could even include un-expressed criticism, a kind of thought-jail for people who frown when they listen to talk radio. When the prisons get too full, we're in luck because execution is still legal in most states, and we can even send prisoners to Texas where they have it fine-tuned by experience.

I Like the Way You Think
LDopas,

You make many good points, though you didn't have to use so much "hate speech". (Sorry, I couldn't help it.)
Despite what you read on these blogs, most Americans couldn't care less what the rest of the world thinks. We would be more than happy to bring each and every one of our soldiers home from wherever they are and let the rest of the world take a flying leap off whatever dunghill it sits on. As a country, we don't need to be loved. Maybe Democrats do, but not everyone.
Our problem is we have leaders who have ignored the wisdom of our founding fathers, who advised us to avoid "entangling alliances". We saw the danger of such alliances with the French in the UN just recently. Could any alliance be more entangling than one with France?
I agree with you that the Brits are our best allies and that the Marshall Plan and World War II are ancient history. But then that feeds into the worldview that Americans don't CARE about history.
You seem to have a much better vantagepoint from which to view events in Europe and the Middle East, so maybe you can answer a few questions?
1. Why were British Muslims willing to kill airline passengers? Isn't Britain free? Are the British people really our allies? You wouldn't know it from watching the BBC.
2. Some have said that anti-Americanism dates to the start of 2001, but how do you explain the attacks on American embassies in Africa and the first attack on the World Trade Center and countless other attacks? Didn't the world love Bill Clinton? Wasn't he the greatest president America ever had? Didn't he work for eight years to resolve the Palestinian conflict? The 9/11 attacks were planned on his watch. Why? (Blaming Bush now is nothing but a cop-out.)
3. You want the US to stop crowing about the Marshall Plan, et al. Fine. Can we please vacate Europe (it seems the only Europeans who don't object to the American military are those who benefit financially from its presence) and can you please get the Muslims to stop trying to get back Andalusia? They haven't owned it for more than five centuries.
THEY NEED TO GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!
Then there's the Crusades. They were almost a millenia ago. The US didn't exist. Most of the countries of Europe didn't exist as separate entities. Muslims got their revenge by conquering most of Europe in the next few centuries and by spreading to Africa and Asia. First, the Crusades took place only after Arab Muslims had conquered the holy land and destroyed thousand-year old villages and churches. The Crusades were a response to Islamic imperialism, but more than that, the Christians lost the Crusades and Muslims ruled for more than five hundred years after that. Enough is enough. GET OVER IT!!!!!!!
From the dawn of history, empires have arisen and each has fallen in its time. The current state of things is not permanent. America will fall as well, in its time. That should make you sleep better.

Let's name names
Medved is right, as usual, but neglected to place blame on any individuals by name. To that end, I hereby nominate Jimmy Carter as home-grown America-Hater #1. Carter is the first former President to routinely condemn his own country, both here and abroad. Carter has single-handedly poisoned the level of discourse in any discussion about America, and gave "legitimacy" to blind hatred of America.

Bill Clinton seems determined to continue in Carter's wretched footsteps, if his recent visit to Saudi Arabia is any indication. It was there -- in one of the most intolerant and repressive nations on earth -- he told his foreign audience how immoral America is. The Saudi's paid Clinton handsomely for his high-profile America-bashing performance.

We have a responsibility to expose and humiliate our fellow citizens when they behave so disgracefully.

Since the world "hates" America
I would kindly ask that they all stay home and quit trying to sneak into my country. And for all the homegrown America haters like this idiot professor, please PULEAZE pack your bags and get the hell out if you hate it so much. See how well you fare in a muslim country.

You don't have to that smart
to see the difference between criticism and rooting against America. There is nopenalty in this country for criticising the administration--no censorship, no beheadings, not even a time out. As dumb and cowardly as the Dixie Chicks were in their speech, the government didn't impose any penalties. Lots of decent hard working Americans decided not to buy their CD's and concert tickets. But that was just us expressing our free speech rights. Every time someone disagrees with a liberal pundit or politician they scream about censorship but it is really just them getting their little feelings hurt. They have never explained why their feelings are more significant than mine. I have a blog post about Political Children. Anyway, if they could defend their positions intelligently they wouldn't have to worry about their feelings. And if they weren't cowards they would get a lot more respect. They have no trouble insulting Christians or conservatives because they know there is no danger. But we see their true colors-various shades of yellow--in something like the Danish cartoon situations or in Rather's interview with Saddam and Wallace's interview with Ahmdijenead. Also Jimmy carter goes to Cuba and criticises America instead of standing against Castro's Human Right's record.

Jay Jay
Your attempt at sarcasm below is petty and untrue. Where our rights are most in jeopardy in this country is where the liberals control--universities, public schools and the MSM.

What are you smoking
I notice that not once did this article mention the fact that many in the World hate America because of our government's intervention in foreign affairs. Our government gives aid to dictators like Saddam Hussein during the 80's and suddenly people who hate us are branded as left-wing Marxists. Our government gives foreign aid to countries like Israel whose government uses it to bomb Lebanon and then we cringe at the thought of Palestineans and others hating us. We create international organizations like the WTO and IMF (both inherently statist and anti-capitalist by the by the way) which then plunge many into poverty and we're not to blame. We create and enforce trade sanctions (which are inherently anti-capitalist) which plunge people into poverty and make them more dependant upon a dictator and then claim that they hate us because of our freedoms.

"America is the richest country on the planet by far. The reason is that we operate as a FREE-MARKET CAPITALIST country, relatively free of governmental controls."

What are you smoking. Our country hasn't been free-market in well over a century since Abe Lincoln first started implementing subsidies and tariffs (both of which the Republican party is historically known for). Add to that the various social(ist) safety nets, government involvement in education, money through centralized banking, the War on Drugs, the FDA, the AMA (which itself first started the health crisis in this country, though no Republican seems to want to abolish it, just "reform" it).

"We would like to get your take on the difference between the American and French Revolutions. Why did the French end in anarchy and totalitarian rule while America ended with personal liberty under limited government?"

Why is it that conservatives and liberals are abolishing limited government with personal liberty. You can't have a government that intervenes in foreign affairs and have limited government at the same time.

"America has, indeed, accomplished some great things in the past. But the reason for the steep rise in Anti Americanism is simple: under George Bush, this country has done more harm than good."

Under almost any president within the twentieth century, the U.S. has done more harm than good due to the abandonment of classical liberal values that once made this country the envy of the world. Rather than being a limited government that didn't engage in foreign wars and foreign aid but rather left its citizens to its own devices, we have instead degenerated into a militaristic nation which feels that it is the duty of government to engage in foreign affairs even at the expense of its own citizens' liberty. The Warfare State has gone hand-in-hand with the Welfare State in this country. What's even funnier is how neoconmies (as I like to call them) claim that if you support government neutrality, then you must support foreign horrors like the Holocaust or the repression in varius Middle Eastern countries, but that's like saying that if you oppose welfare, then you must hate the poor and want them to starve to death. War is the health of the State and the State is the enemy of liberty, no matter who's at the helm.

Phylo Out
Yeah, far out.

Idopas...
Homer Simpson: (to Queen Elizabeth II)" But we Americans are England's children! I know we don't call as often as we should, and we aren't as well behaved as our goody-two shoes brother, Canada. Who by the way has never had a girlfriend. (whispers) I'm just sayin'…"

I too would be ashamed and pissed at life if I were born anywhere else besides the U.S. of A.

One Friend
That America is hated globally is old news... but we do have two friends, maybe a third.

Israel is our friend, but considering how we have sold them out (so much for "you're for us or for the terrorists"), I can't imagine how much longer they're stay our friend.

Britain might be our friend, but I don't know how long that will last with the Anti-American European propoganda machine going full force, and the invasion of Europe by Islam.

But we have one true friend (whom we have typically not treated appropriately) in the world: a tiny village in Kenya, Enoosaen. Before 9/11, we didn't prop up their dictator, we didn't buy billions of dollars of oil from them, we didn't do much of anything for them. Yet when they heard of our tragedy on 9/11, they offered us 14 sacred cows (a fortune by their standards), as well as offering to go after Al Qaida for us... with nothing more than SPEARS.
Where is Eoosaen's factories, schools, public utilities? We could have rubbed the world's collective nose in it, by lavishing our wealth and power on this tiny village. We could have taught the world what true friendship with the U.S. buys you... instead we go and hand democracy to a countryful of lazy, cowardly Iraqis. We go along with the despotic U.N. to "end the violence" to protect the Lebanese who openly back Hezbollah terrorists, costing our "friend" Israel their most important tool: deterrance.
The world doesn't like us because the world is mostly full of lowlifes. And they have no incentive to change their ways because we reward them for being lowlifes, and fail to reward those who deserve it.

French vs American Revolution
Valiant for the Truth --

Francis Shaeffer explained this quite well in "How Then Should We Live?"

France lacked a Christian worldview in which your fellow man actually means something to you simply because he is God's creation. Therefore, the quest for "freedom" during the French revolution ended up as a massacre and the imposition of a dictator to bring order to society.

The American revolution was fought, by and large, by men (and a few women) with Christian worldviews. Although they temporarily hated the British for trying to take their freedom away (and make no mistake, the Americans had known defacto freedom for more than a century under benign British neglect), they viewed all men has created equal and loved by a Creator God. Therefore, the thought of beheading their enemies (or even countrymen who disagreed with them) was anathema. This basic love of humanity and reliance on God kept order in a society that had shrugged off human dictatorship while it decided what sort of government it wanted to replace it.

Again, Shaeffer does a much better job of explaining it, but it all comes down to worldview, the same as why Christians aren't trying to wipe Muslims off the world map while Muslims are very intent upon wiping all non-Muslims out. Worldview informs actions and ideology.

Toomuchsense -- Bush's Fault:

I can't believe you left out the World Cup head-butt. EVERYONE, that is, everyone with a tin-foil hat, knows it was Bush's fault Zinedine Zidane head-butted Marco Materazzi. How could you leave out such a landmark moment? It's people like you who are causing the LA Times to lose subscribers. For which, I want to state, keep up the good work.

Another schoolyard analogy
“In the same way that the most successful kid in school will generate considerable resentment . . . ”

Another schoolyard analogy is if the biggest kid on the playground acts like a weakling, the others will pick on him and generally despise him, and he will go to the bottom of the pecking order.

If only, if only, there were one single country in the whole, wide, world that could genuinely hate the United States enough, not for it's virtues but for the betrayal of it's virtues, to reject pegging the value of it's currency on the paper dollar, and return to a 100% gold standard! That would introduce the free market to it's currency (correction, currencies), since money would be a privately created good backed by gold and silver, and pronounce fractional reserve banking as legal theft!

If only there were one country in the world that could hate the United States enough to say, "You're not a free market, capitalist country, you're a grab bag of mixed economy ideas, many of them contradictory, even incomprehensible, you're a mix of Mercantalism, Socialism, and sometimes Capitalism. We've discovered the work of Ludwig von Mises and other Austrian School economists and we're going to establish a true and complete free market Misesian economy!"

But lo and behold Mr. Medved there's simply not enough of the right kind of hatred for America in the world, and the U.S. would probably invade any country courageous enough to become independent of the paper dollar and establish a true 100% gold standard, knowing it would cause the collapse of the paper dollar, and the legal theft that is inflation.

elitist contempt
“ . . . elitist contempt . . . tirelessly fomented by leading educators . . .”

Imagine a foreign exchange student who attends an American university and hears nothing but four years of anti-American haranguing by Leftist professors. Can anyone blame the student for going home and spreading that anti-American sentiment? Why after ONLY A FEW MONTHS of such indoctrination, American freshmen return home and spout it to their parents.

Jay-Jay
What a thinker you are, my man! IMPRESSIVE.

Except that you seem to be suffering from a few misconceptions. The political wing eager to promote 'thought crime' is on the left. I have not heard too many conservatives advocating hate crimes legislation, lately. But the democrats think it's a great idea to sentence people to jail based on their thoughts.

And you seem to be guilty of following that same sort of logic since you appear to believe that anyone who disagrees with you is eager to put you in jail. I hate to disillusion you, but I don't think that the mere fact that a conservative disagrees with you implies that he is trying to "make any form of criticism against American policy illegal" or use the fact that "execution is still legal " to execute you.

As for putting college professors in jail, I think you'll find that most professors are safe. As members of the left-wing party, they are excused from the speech codes they have imposed right here in America. Yes, yes, we are supposed to have that crazy little thing called free speech in this country, but your side would have it that that does not apply to conservatives on college campuses.

BUT you did have one thing right, when you said:

"Let's work to put the most right-wing, ideological people around in office this fall, and in the succeeding election."

Nothing would please me more. And I think it's important, as it would help to preserve our freedoms.

Jimmy Carter
You crack me up!

In re: Mr. Huh?
(or is it Mr. duh?) You think Lincoln was the first President to levy tariffs and grant subsidies? Wrong. One of the South's biggest complaints was regarding tariffs on their agrarian products (before Lincoln was elected).
The National Bank? Read the Communist Manifesto (I'm sure you already have!). A central bank is one of the basic tenets listed by Marx & Engels.
Social safety nets? (See Democrats FDR and LBJ)

I could go on but you socialists bore me. Go worship in front of your Jimmy Carter alter.

Exactly - but how ironic
" the United States remains the indefatigable engine that drives the world economy, with productivity and ingenuity as indispensable to sustaining global prosperity as American agricultural bounty is essential to feeding all of humanity. " Isn't it ironic that in a world where thousands die of starvation each day that this is not seen to be the problem rather than a reason to crow? The difficulty so many of us non-Americans have with the USA (heaven help us if we forget that everyone from both American continents are "American") is that the ingenuity and productivity are there but are not shared - there is no "humanity" in the eyes of a lot of citizens of the USA, just US and them. Yeah, I'm a bleeding liberal, get over it!

The difficulty so many of us Americans have with 'bleeding liberals' is the profound ignorance with which they speak, which is oddly enough charateristically shown within your remarks.

NOT SHARED????

Bilby, Bilby, Bilby...

Bilby writes, “The difficulty so many of us non-Americans have with the USA (heaven help us if we forget that everyone from both American continents are "American") is that the ingenuity and productivity are there but are not shared - there is no "humanity" in the eyes of a lot of citizens of the USA, just US and them.”

Bilby:

Maybe it’s time YOU started sharing. The liberal M.O. is like an echo chamber; always transferring their misdeeds, foibles, and inaction on others. The U.S. not only shares as a nation, its people are extremely generous, individually, as well. Oh, and strangely enough, per capita charitable contributions from red-states significantly outpace blue state giving. Could that be because conservatives believe in personal responsibility and don’t just leave it up to the state?

People in our country not only provide financial support for their places of worship, they send clothing overseas through outreaches like Voice of the Martyrs. Name any evangelical church and you will find they send foodstuffs to the needy, global community and it gets there with a comparative small fraction of administrative costs. We support Missionaries, some churches send construction mission teams to third world countries, others provide medical and dental services. “Not shared?” Where have you been? Obviously, not in church...

The foregoing is a very small sampling of avenues available. If you are truly concerned, get involved. There's a whole world of opportunity out there waiting for you.

Hmmm? Interesting topic
tanabear writes:
America hatred?
Does the rest of the world hate America, or do they just hate Bush? Certainly, the world's opinion of American has decline since Bush was elected. And it has declined dramatically since Bush led us into Iraq(the war in error).

I love that Tanabear constantly refers to Iraq as Bush's war. Which Bush? Bush I started it when Iraq invaded Kuwait. Clinton resumed it before Bush II did, and then Bush responded and kept Clinton's promise of more force if Saddam didn't straighten up and Congress supported Bush I, Clinton and Bush II. Oh that's right. They supported him before they didn't support him.

However, regarding the hate for America. A Chinese official was asked why China had switched from socialism to their current reliance on individual responsibility for the citizens of China. He said, "Look what America did with Christian principles." And, he wasn't even a Christian but saw the value of individuals being responsible for using the opportunities provided or found.

Thus, they gave the people the state owned homes and said, now they are yours, you care for them. They sold the state owned businesses and told the employees, either work for the new bosses or get the skills you need for a different job. They added personal social security accounts to government and corporation contributions to force them to be at least partially responsible for their care in old age. They added personal savings healthcare accounts for the same reason. The set higher standards on education (not lower like we do) and now graduate 350,000 engineers a year.

They may or may not hate us or our government but, if they do it may be because we are becoming a socialist nation and they are trying to become a capitalist nation. We had about 30 countries join us in Iraq so I wouldn't say they hate us. However, many of them are old socialist nations that used what we were, as a pattern for what they want to become. They have decentralized, deregulated, lowered taxes on wealth and business to encourage business growth, jobs and higher wages, (the opposite of what we are doing) and they are also, in many cases stressing personal responsibility with social security having personal accounts. They are also improving their educations systems.

So, who does hate us. Mostly it is "Islamic nations with significant Islamofascist presence" and other nations who fear their own Islamic population and say our "meddling in the middle east" is causing their own terrorists to act out their hatred of the U.S. and Israel on them. It is socialist nations that have to compete with us. It is nations that have corrupt governments that, like France, were in bed with Saddam Hussein and others in the Middle-East they are trying to appease because they fear them.

Often it is not even the nations that hate us but their press paints it as if the majority of the people do when it is a few and some in their government who want to blame us for their own failed policies. Some of the hate is not hate but contempt for what we have become, a weak nation with few teeth.

Our military is no longer feared my many. Oh, they fear our fire power but know we have limited manpower. After all, we told them that every night on the news so it became world knowledge of how limited we were. We have 8 trillion in national debt being held by Japan, China and other nations. Our currency is valued in "oil" because we went of the gold standard but got Saudi Arabia (they got a good deal in this) to price oil in dollars which stabilized our money in relation to other currency for decades.

We have runaway entitlement spending mostly due to mandatory COLA increases and $54 trillion in unfunded liability for Social Security and Medicare. We can't even fund other nation's poor, oppressed and needy like those after the Tsunami unless we borrow money to send it overseas. 2/3 of our 2007 budget is in just 3 of the ninety or so departments in the Federal Government.

Department of Health and Human Services $697 Billion 60% Growth since 2001
Department of the Treasury $495,Billion 27.8 % Growth since 2001
Social Security Administration $625 Billion 32.3 % Growth since 2001

You can’t stop that growth when 77 million more are going to use those programs for 35 years as the baby boomers retire.

Yet, the nation’s voters don’t want to implement what Ireland did to turn their nation around and their national debt was even higher (120% of GDP) than ours. They cut taxes on the wealthy, big business and investment while our voters want to keep them on them. They cut their debt to 27% while continuing to fund their social programs, education and increase workers wages. Tax revenues soared from all areas of the nation, industry, wealthy, and workers because of tax cuts and other pro-business policies. Our voters will not support that and thus neither party is going to do much. If we are hated it might be because we have a nation of voters who “depend on government” instead of themselves. Almost ½ of the people now are no longer paying income tax and are dependent on the other ½ to pay for government and social programs or so they think. They don’t realize there is about 35% hidden tax in most of what they buy and the compliance cost of the collection of that tax, as well.

So, maybe they hate a nation that is too dumb to know socialism is killing them and continue to vote for more socialism. Maybe they laugh at us for dumbing down our education system while they raise their standards. Actually, I don’t think most nations hate us. They just feel sorry for what we are doing to ourselves while we tell the world how strong we are and what a great economy we have. $8 trillion in debt with a declining manufacturing sector, and a trade deficit with China that keeps growing even when we have a trade surplus with other nations, doesn’t sound like a strong economy.

Some do hate us, some feel sorry for us but many still want to come here from all over the world for the opportunities we have. But, for how long. More and more are turning to Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ireland, “new” Europe, etc for opportunities. The growth of millionaires in China is about 12% per annum. The middle class is growing at about 50 million a year. India is doing the same thing. At current growth rates, China would pass our GDP in about 5 years though most say it will take a decade for them to pass us as they believe they can’t sustain that rate of growth. Of course they have been saying that same thing for a decade.

But, the 30 nations that joined us in our war on terror would lead me to believe we aren’t as hated as some would make it appear. France and Germany don’t count since they are socialist nations that had Islamic economic ties with Saddam and others in the Middle-East and got caught in their unethical behavior.

Are we a perfect nation? Not by a long shot since no nation is. All try to meet the needs of their people in different ways and since we have always depended on raw materials from all over the world we have always had an interest in the governments of other nations and how they affect our people and our citizens needs. The left would have us do without many of those raw materials in the name of “peace.” That is their right but many citizens don’t want to do without the things those raw materials are used for. Think of the hundreds and hundreds of medical products that have oil based materials in them. Our standard of living did rely on things happening around the world and to deny that would be wrong. But, at the same time, in many cases, we improved the nations we got those things from or at least created the potential that tyrants or corrupt governments kept from the people.

Interestingly, much of the “hate” was generated during the 40 years democrats were in control of Congress so to lay the blame on one party is silly. Also, those people were elected by us, “we the people” and they did our bidding, didn’t they? So if they erred, wasn’t it because we elected them and told them what we wanted? Did we really ask them how they would give us what we wanted or did we just tell them to get it? Aren’t we the ones who wanted a politically correct war fought in Viet Nam? Didn’t a lot of hate from some stem from that war?

I am not offering an answer really, just more questions as to why, if we are actually hated and when did it start.

Why the world hates America
This is an outstanding article!

However I think a more accurate word than envy is resentment. I might envy someone their forehand in tennis, but I would never resent it. I might envy someone their successes in business, but would never resent it. (Yes, I'm a Republican - can you tell?) The left does not envy success. Their emotions range from resentment to hate.

Envy
n 1: a feeling of grudging admiration and desire to have something possessed by another [syn: enviousness, the green-eyed monster] 2: spite and resentment at seeing the success of another (personified as one of the deadly sins) [syn: invidia] v 1: feel envious towards; admire enviously 2: be envious of; set one's heart on [syn: begrudge]

Resent
v 1: feel bitter or indignant about; "She resents being paid less than her co-workers" 2: wish ill or allow unwillingly [syn: begrudge] [ant: wish]

I Love America!
This is an article that is worth returning to time and again. Hatred of America has been around for a long time and isn't going away. But all the while, the American left (liberals) say you shouldn't question their patriotism. Patriotism means love of country. Those who hate their country, do not love it. America's left is unpatriotic. I think this is something to bring up over and over again. Say "I love America. Don't you?" and wait for the reaction. "Repeat after me, I love America." Your not chocking are you?

It's Ego Driven
I feel that what drives "Our Covert Enemies" is the attention they receive from the media. Our pathetic excuse of news coverage is attracted only by what will get ratings. Unfortunately, the more extreme and hateful the more coverage it will receive. A perfect example is the University of Wisconsin Instructor (if you can call him that), Kevin Barrett, who is teaching a course in Islamic Studies. This man is gainfully employed by a very prestigious university. His theories are absurd and his sentiment wholly anti- American. Nevertheless, he was the "talk of the town, going from show to show and from paper to paper. For what? This guy and many others like him have figured out the way to get noticed is to be as pathetic and hateful as possible. That's what drives the ratings, that's what massages the ego!

Why do we care?
It comes as no suprise whatsoever that those who claim to despise America seem to be lining up in droves to come here. They want the freedoms and the decadance that they claim to despise. Remember what the 9/11 terrorists were doing the night before the attack? That's right...hanging out at a strip club! It's all about envy. As far as the self-loathing American liberals are concerned, it's all about guilt. If these people truly want to help, why not foster those ideas that will allow the less fortunate to help themselves instead of encouraging the masses to feed at the government trough? I suppose it can be summed up with an old joke:
What do you call a liberal that gets mugged? A conservative.

why they really hate us
Medved writes: "America hatred has clearly intensified in the last fifteen years, though it’s hard to make the case that our country has suddenly begun playing a more destructive role in the world since the conclusion of the Cold War."

Phylo out.

The Barest of Sharp Bones
Israel is Almighty God's choice of people groups and has shown an active interest in them for thousands of years since He chose Abraham as the progenitor of His people.
There is a force of evil in the world which hates God and especially God's children yet in the spirit of fairness is permitted to work his work until such time as God has already chosen that He will stop it.
Abraham was given a promise that all his 'seed' (read generations that are a part of him by a blood relationship would be as the "sands of the sea" in number.
Ismael, the child of Abraham and an Arab woman was the progenitor of all the Arab nations who have the same promise of numbers as Israel has through Abraham and Sarah.
In the meantime a Holy God permits mankind to choose between Himself or the evil one, and in the end that will make all the difference.
For the time being, the evil one does all he can to remove the children of Almighty God from the earth, but even in the midst of all that, people of all nations, races, creeds are turning to God from whatever they have believed in.
There is more, much more, but in the spirit of brevity with a minimum of controversy, the fact is today, that the struggles in the east between Israel and the Arab world is the age old struggle between good and evil.
I know the names of the two people groups, but I shall leave the answer for you to choose.
Oh yes I know who will be the supreme winner at the end...
And one more nattering fact - the center, the focus of this world has always been Jerusalem.

Hating America
Prestigious University, Democrats, Liberals, France, Latin America, South America and any other American hater.......PISS ON YOU. Why do so many millions want to come here to live? Who else, literally, saved the world for democracy in 1945 and who single-handed beat back Communisim.....America that's who......So PISS ON ALL OF YOU AMERICA HATERS.

Phylo:

Your post @ 10:02 PM is a cut and paste of your post from 9:13 AM! Same post, same lousy reasoning...

AudiR10 & Michael are correct -
They hate us out of envy - envy of our success. A success that they, as parasitic socialist pigs, will never experience. While Europeans hate us for our success, they rely on us as fleas on a dog (as in WWII). As for the Muslim nations, they hate everyone (including themselves) and will continue attempting to destroy the world.

I Agree With Michael, Again..
As is almost always the case, I agree with what Mr. Medved has to say. However, this caught my eye: "..nostalgia for the bad-old-days of Marxist tyranny"

We just saw a special about this on PBS, about Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, and Communism during the 1950's. Really they (PBS) are still pushing that angle about sympathy for a Communist cause..There's so much good on that station, but their ever expanding Liberal podium can be hard to swallow..

Anyway, 'here-here' once more to Mr. Medved's insights. Except, I have to add, that while some nations may still embrace Conservative values, the sinful hand of media has been lifting its ugly fingers dipping them into more than just our local soil.

I mean, has anyone taken a gander at Spanish tv these days? (Or the last 10 years, for that matter?) Not that I watch the stuff, but we have some Spanish family..

It can be, at times, more lewd and sensationalistic than most network daytime stuff. Often, worse..

I remember a time, not too long ago, when Spanish
actresses, or most entertainers, actually wore clothing..as a regular pasttime, and not just to be coy..

Ah nostalgia..

But, I digress..

"Hating" our nation may well be one of the ultimate expressions of regret and self-loathing our nation has left from its 60's legacy.

That and some really bad memories and very bad cuts of blue jeans..

Phylo re: Marines in Haditha

Maybe you didn’t get my post from Thomas Sowell’s column of 08/22/06 “Point of No Return.” Responding to his column you said at 9:32 AM, “What kind of people rape a fourteen year old girl and then gun down the whole village in a drunken rampage and then try to cover it all up (Marines in Haditha).”

I believe your implication was that the Marines are guilty.

Didn’t you get my response? Let me repeat it, “Did I miss something? I was not aware that charges had been made, that a trial was convened, and that a guilty verdict was announced. If you know these men are guilty, please document.”

You are very quick to condemn someone but very slow to prove your case. If you have some evidence to support your claim, now is the time to put it on the table. If not then a retraction is in order. How about it? Are truth and honor more important to you than your harbored hatreds?

If you can’t back what you said then everything you have posted since is tainted and your opinions are just flapping in the breeze. You want us to listen to you? Put up.

About Europe-Who Shuns God, and America,
ldopas, your comments deriding we Americans and lauding yourself, you, a person from Britain, or so you say, really were sad to me. I had to answer your one query though, as it seemed like one...

"As most of you blinkered, xenophobic morons (Skip, Audi, Uncle Max take a bow) will never have ventured out of Dip sht Ohio (22% only have a passport - yeah I’m sure you'll say because you don’t want to go abroad - fine just shut up moaning about stuff you don’t know), you comment from complete ignorance"

And why do you suppose so many do not want to "go abroad" as you note?

Is it, perhaps, because England, and most of Europe, despite its grand and regal history in so many areas, like the Arts, for example, has lost its heart about God?

Somewhere in the angst and malaise that set into your social system somewhere between after the world war and then after the 1960's, your nation's then hedonistic heyday, God died for Europe.

And only great hearts with great bravery or noble sentiment can do much when they are touched by God.

Which is NOT to say that there aren’t good and noble people who don't know God in Europe, nor that there aren’t good and noble people who do.

But the latter really can't safely cross the streets at night in any European town, now can they?

I mean without being accosted by some pagan youth.

Of course, in part, I am being facetious.

But my point remains the same, while God is good and ever on His throne, any nation or people which shuns Him, and those who seek to serve Him, will, ultimately, fall to populate the defeated, the materialistic, the weak, the mean,.

Such a people will never look at history honestly and thank those others who fought for their cause, or risked themselves to save the other's lives.

The ones who do, well, they, have a certain amount of depth in personality, or at least, the decency of a conscience.

I hope you understand these slight generalizations are said to make a point.

Naturally, there are many good and decent people who care about the cause of right all across Europe who work and live for such causes, as we speak now.

Though I have to say, some here, myself included, have the perspective that many Europeans are a a bit self-satisfied and a bit unappreciative and short-sighted I daresay, when it comes to their own welfare in history.

This, and the obvious repulsion when it comes to God and morals, can not ever, ever be a heatlhy combo..

I hope the distance allows you to read me over there.

I think some are reading you loud and clear and it's been a poor poor reading, sir.

Give them Hell Phylo Se Fizer
Phylo,

Those idiots on the right, just don't recognize your brilliance and thoughful political thought. They're jealous of your depth of knowledge. That the great satan does not fool you or those of us on the left.

For satan has arose in our time. The great satan has 666 within the totality of his name. His number and name are one and the same. 666 = George Bush.

George Bush brings death and ruin on all that he touches.

The tsunami that hit Indonesian. Bush's fault.

Princess Diana's staged accident and death. Bush's fault.

Erectile Disfunction as you know quite well Phylo, is a devastating illnes. Brought to us by Bush.

Curt Cobain's death. Bush's fault. And while we're at it, where was George Bush when John Lennon was shot.

John Kerry's missing military discharge papers! YES, YES, Bush's fault. His minions have destroyed those papers showing his heroic actions in Nam, that would have elected our war hero, John Kerry.

We will overcome the great satan. With the brain power of tanabear, left angle, moderone and others. It's only a matter of time.....................

Phylo Se Fizer with all due respect
Mr. Fizer, with all due respect sir, you are an idiot and part of the cause of the world's misperception of the United States.

You wrote…

I was born and raised in Ohio, and had the good fortune to meet and marry my wife who is Brazilian. My lovely wife was born in the US by Brazilian Nationals, but raised in Brazil. As an adult, she moved to the US and claimed her citizenship. I have been to Brazil many times, before and after President Bush was elected.

I guarantee you American hatred did not start on January 20th, 2002. Americans chastise our citizens for ignorance, but we really do not know the meaning of the word. My in-laws live in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro (definitely not a tourist spot) and live an upper middle class lifestyle (average middle class by American Standards). During an extended stay with them, their maid (all middle class families in Brazil employ maids) was frightened by me. She was frightened by my language (English). My in-laws could explain that I was American because they could not show her on a map where America was, because she did not know what a map was. Now this woman is typical of 75% of Brazil. She could not be shown where America was on a map, but she knew with all certainty that America has a plan to take over the Amazon region of Brazil. This is one of many common urban myths alive in Brazil.

Two more quick urban myths that you can argue till you are blue in the face with these Brazilians. Brazilians are convinced that American school text books show the Amazon as part of the United States. If you can read Portuguese, you can find it on Brazilian websites. Don’t try to argue with these people; they know this to be a fact.

Second (but certainly not last) Brazilian urban myth… Brazil has a failed rocket launch facility in the northern part of Brazil. Many Brazilians are convinced the United States has taken over (or soon will) this launch site.

I could go on and on with their urban myths, but would refer you to a Conservative writer (a liberal to Brazilians since conservative thought preserves the original freedoms of our democracy) from Brazil – Olavo de Carvalho.

When we speak of poverty in this Country, they think of poverty and health care in their country. If our media says that 10% of Americans live in poverty; they believe 10% live in sod houses or favellas (slums) with dirt floors as squatters as in Brazil. When we say there is racism in the US, they think of people living as indentured servants and starving in the streets with no right to vote.

The media in Brazil is so far left we would not recognize it. Brazilians find CCN International to be a right wing rag. O Globo would be closer to Pravda and consider the New York Times to a puppet of Karl Rove. This is their only source of news, and they run with it.

Where do they get their opinions from? Well, they take the left wing rants from the likes of the New York Times, the Washington Post, and extrapolate to fit their Marxist agendas.

Your idiotic rants are they conspiratorial crap these people run with. You want to know why the rest of the world hates us? It is because idiots like you feed their urban myths and justify their jealousy of all that we are and all that they are not.

Simply stated, Michael Medved hit the nail on the head. If you do not understand this, you have either not been paying attention or you are an idiot.

Stop being a crybaby, Medved
Nobody loves us, everybody hates us, guess we'll go eat
worms. After wading through virtually every
response to this column, I have come to the conclusion
that 1) no one can accuse the right of being overly
introspective and 2) the right doesn't like or trust
anyone (or at least most of those who have responded to
this column). I mean, what do you say to people who
call others "leftist creep,"& "scumbags", who say "Who
cares why they hate us as long as they fear us," "shut the hell up." I don't know whether to cry or scream.

I can only guess how the Middle East felt about us before
the war. I'll assume that they weren't crazy about us,
but weren't obsessed about it. I think we can safely
presume that has now changed.

I have got a much better idea how the Europeans feel
about us. And for the most part, "hate" is way too
strong a word. I think it is more on the order of a
mixture of loving to make fun of us (as we do the French)
and their relief and smugness that they no longer feel
the need to kiss our butt on a regular basis, thanks
largely to the strength of the European Union and the
monetary strength of the Euro - which drives us nuts.

As for being jealous, those poor woe-begotten socialists
over there are doing all right, actually. They are
better educated, they are slimmer and healthier, they
have less divorce, less crime. They have a better
appreciation of the fine arts. They live longer. We,
of course, have more guns, power, and money. Not everyone happens to think those are the most important
things, or that it is the sum of all things wonderful.

I am not saying that is all we have. We have a lot of good things, but one of the worse things we can do is to continuously bad-mouth our allies, for heaven's sake.

Yes, of course, if another Hitler showed up on the scene
they would undoubtedly want and need (and resent) our
help. But there are two sides to this story. Look how
well we are doing in Iraq without THEM.

Everyone and every country needs allies and friends.
We have made a god of our individualism and I don't
think that is our strong point. We have forgotten (or
maybe never recognized) how important community is.
When we divorce ourselves from others we start getting
paranoid and nasty. If you don't believe me, just
read the letters on this website.

ROFL! Good shot! You nailed Phylo to the wall. (His posts are too long, anyway)

Way to go Lisa!

You open with pejoratives and follow up with exprobrations against the use of pejoratives. You might want to consider the efficacy of using this line of reasoning. Just a thought... If you were trying to make a point, you did.

Thanks Cutter
I am glad you agree.

Lisa

You make some good points. I attempt to get some of those who make unsubstantiated claims to back up those claims with documentation. So far I have not had much success and they go on and on ranting. How are we supposed to dialog when all they want is to rave? Those who attack ranters and the ravers have given up trying to dialog with them and just shoot first.

Go back to the first posters on all of these commentaries. They are always respectful until the ravers start. And they always say the same things: Bush lied men died..., no WMD found..., France thinks..., Bush is stupid..., Chaney should resign..., etc. No documentation, no logic, just rants. How are we supposed to take them seriously?

When I was much younger, John Wayne was my hero. You could always count on Big John to stand in the gap between good and evil. Today John is dead and all we have are the Tom Cruises and Mel Gibsons, cute to the ladies but not John Wayne. When the fighting starts I want somebody steady and true like John Wayne at my back not someone that will scream and rant and rave at the first sign of blood.

How about you? Who do you want at your back? Would you settle for the French? Why? Maybe Ted Kennedy would do? I'm sure Phylo or Anti-Partisan_Righty could be counted on.

Maybe we'll get lucky and all of this will blow over and we won't have to worry about our backs. But on the off chance that things go south make up your mind right now where and with whom you stand.

I personally don't worry too much about what Europe thinks, I believe it's already lost at sea. The people there have given up their chances of freedom for socialist security; the Muslims have shown that any security is nebulous at best. I look at Europe and think that there is America in 10-20 years. I do worry about the liberals in this country, I believe they would intentionally sabotage the nation and that would affect me and mine directly. I am not a believer in Socialism.

I've said too much. I'm going to bed. G'nite all.

America the Beautiful
America has created a country where various Asians, Middle Easterners, Africans, and Europeans can become rich and free. No other country on earth or in history has this track record.

Americas writers, scientists, athletes, poets, musicians, doctors, statesmen, entrepreneurs, artists, and bankers are changing the world and have been now for decades. Again, no country on earth compares.

Hundreds of thousands of white Americans died so that black Americans would be free. If Islam had the same moral compass, the Middle East would be a paradise instead of a cesspool.

As if that were not enough, Americans largely rid the country of racism in a generation. in contrast, Islam lives on tribal violence and suppression of women and "infidels." Europe is overrun with apartheid communities and widespread disrespect for one another.

I'm proud to live here and happy to speak the truth.

Lisa Pejorative:
Chalk up one more pejorative for Lisa. If nothing else, your consistent.

Lisa, you are a star!
Lisa, fantastic post. Thank you for writing that.

That was what I was saying, but not as well as you put it!

I holiday in the US each year, I love it, but only for a few weeks. See, unlike Medved and many of the posters here, Im NOT envious. I love my country, Britain, the supposed socialist state overrun by muslims. Cept its not.

As you say its a capitalist, free, country where we don't get stiffies for guns.

As you talk about, I get sick of people lumping us all in as "Europe". Some posters after you still refer to it. And I know why.

Because lumping Europe together allows you to write ill informed opinions. Europe is a number of countries, many wealthy. Our political systems are different and complex.

It allows the morons to post that we are all lawless socialists. As if Britain is anything like Albania for example. Dont be so stupid.

It allows people to constantly make fun of the French. Someone put crassly that having Europe as allies meant have the French watching you back. Forgetting the we British are you friends, allies and are damn well fighting with you in Iraq and Afganistan. Or did you convieniently and RUDELY all forget that.

I cant speak for all Europe. But if you believe some of the bilge written, then please come to Britain for a week. You will see a country that is not perfect (non on this planet are), but a tolerant, free, wealthy, progressive society of polite educated people. Try it someday.

Lisa...more power to you! I know your type of american vastly outnumbers the other types who post here ignorantly. ;-)

To Rugged Individualist
I suppose you conveniently forget in your dribbling jingoism that we the British abolished slavery way before you. And you were segregating blacks in all walks of life until well into the sixties, when we never did. Or does that dent your idiotically blinkered view of your country?

You say: "Europe is overrun with apartheid communities and widespread disrespect for one another".

Is it? Lets hear the proof then. Its bull. In fact here in Britain we are accused by people like YOU in other forums of being too integrated an tolerant therefore allowing terrorist within.

Make your mind up.

To Mrs V
Dear Mrs V,

Oh dear. You didnt get my post did you. I am not deriding the US and lauding us. I was redressing the balance a bit. Read it again. Honestly , dont be oversensitive.

As for the rest well. It may not surprise you that I take the contra view. Im glad our society doesnt have an nonsensical and unfounded belief in a being outlined in a book written 2000 years ago by people who thought the world was flat.

You clearly do, and that in my book makes you exaclty like muslims. Except their is a bit more up to date being 5 centuries younger. Same thing though.

You "moral" society tries to force a view of how we came here in your 2000 year old book on poor public school kids. It gets doctors killed. It guides your President as he gets told what to do in prayer. Its very backward and shocking for the rest of us.

Morals? You dont have to be religious to be moral. Religions have killed the same if not more people that Secularism. You have the death penalty, we dont. Though shalt not kill.....where was that written, remind me.

I LOVED where you wrote about Europeans being "self-satisfied". That coming from an american is rich! We arent smug, we just dont like being called scumbags and backward by some of the ignoramii here, 99% Im willing to bet have never ever been over here. Is that too much to ask? ask/

To jdw
Ah at last. Someone who is analying it a bit deeper.

Im British. Here I'll write it large: WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS. and even so some of your fellow countrymen try to be rude to us by belittling us we will remain so.

2 things:

Firstly I fail to see how Isreal is your number 1 friend. I dont recall Israel fighting by your side in the last twenty years like we have?!? I do recall you having to constantly talk them out of lighting up a war in the middle east. Nice frineds - not.

Secondly, and I'll write it loud again. WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT EUROPE THINKS. Ok. So we wont be taking on board any anit-us crap. Ok. It may surprise you to know we dont care for the EU much, that is why Blair darent call a referendum. He knows he's lose it big time.

hope that is clear. And people read it before they want write something rude about your best friend again.

Lisa:

Perhaps I should have made myself clear, that is, as to the “point” you made to me. You had an opportunity to distinguish yourself as a voice of reason in the midst of the din. Instead you chose to be just another dissonant voice in the echo chamber. Your point in my opinion was effectively an anti-point. Anything you wrote after your own rant was blunted (pointless) because of your opening.

Apparently you have nonetheless, scored points with Birdman and Idopas. I however remain unconvinced, and think you have an agenda. I sincerely hope you prove me wrong. Your future posts will reveal the truth. “Wisdom [after all] is known by her actions.”

Medved's article
Mr. Medved,

I loved your article. Hatred of that which is good (freedom, liberty, choice) is really a S
