Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Many of the bitter controversies in every corner of the globe inevitably raise the same ancient question: why does the world hate the Jews?

Whether it’s the angry international reaction to Israel’s efforts to defend itself in Lebanon, or Mel Gibson’s drunken rant in Malibu, the age-old specter of anti-Semitism refuses to disappear. With only 13 million Jews in the world – less than one fourth of one percent of the earth’s population – why does this tiny group inspire such bitter, widespread and often violent animosity?

The answer is obvious to anyone who monitors anti-Semitic propaganda from all its multifarious sources. People who express hatred, resentment or fear regarding the Jews almost always focus on charges of Jewish arrogance, elitism, aggressiveness and lust for power. According to the classic logic of anti-Semites everywhere, Jews deserve harsher treatment than anyone else because they work harder than anyone else to enshrine their own superior status. This argument suggests that the only way to answer constant Jewish demands for special treatment and privilege is to impose special limitations and restrictions on their instinctive will to dominate. According to such logic, the rest of the world must work together to cut Jews down to size; only then will they function on the same plane as everyone else. As Hutton Gibson (Holocaust-denying father of the scandal-tarnished star, Mel) revealingly declared to interviewer Steve Feuerstein: “I don’t know what the Jewish agenda is except that it’s all about control. They’re after one world religion and one world government.”

This central, primeval charge that arrogant Jews seek global dominance originates from three distinct historical factors:

1- The emphasis on the “Chosen People” concept in the Bible

2- The prominence and prosperity of Jews in most nations in which they’ve established significant communities, and

3- The startling successes of the State of Israel in the mere 60 years of its existence.

These circumstances sometimes perplex even people of good will and therefore deserve deeper consideration and explanation.

I. CHOSEN PEOPLE CONCEPT

While it’s true that the Bible speaks repeatedly of a special relationship between God and the Jews, anti-Semitic agitators have always misunderstood or distorted the essential nature of that connection. According to Scripture, the Jews have been chosen for distinct responsibilities, not for unique privileges: we accept special obligations, rather than claiming special power. In Jewish tradition, non-Jews are expected to follow just seven commandments—the Noahide laws of basic morality. According to mainstream Torah teaching, gentiles who follow these rules (don’t murder, don’t steal, don’t commit gross sexual immorality, and so forth) should be judged as righteous and assumed to earn their share in the World to Come (the afterlife). God, however, expects his covenantal people to apply far more numerous and stringent commandments to their behavior – 613 commandments, to be exact – regarding everything from food, to business ethics, marital relations, and Sabbath observance.

The concept of chosen-ness, in other words, involves a significant burden rather than privileged status —a burden reflected in the common phrase, “Ohl Malchus Shamayim” or “The Yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven,” to describe the commitment of every Jew who accepts the covenant of Abraham. Moreover, Jews remain more a “choosing people” than a “chosen people” because so many non-Jews over the centuries (and particularly in recent years) have selected Jewish identity and converted to our faith. In the US, nearly 10% of today’s Jewish population of 5.2 million counts as converts to Judaism. Though we don’t emphasize proselytizing efforts in the style of Evangelical Christians, many of the leaders of the Jewish people (including hugely significant rabbis in nearly every era for the last 2000 years) have been “Jews by Choice” --- those who weren’t born Jewish, but chose to join our people through an ancient, well-established process of conversion.

Finally, the whole idea of the “Chosen People” has never brought the assumption that God selected us for unusual political, military or even economic authority. The Bible suggests that the Jews will be “a nation of priests and a holy nation” --- not some sort of all-conquering superpower within the Middle East or the world at large. Our tradition has always defined Jewish power as spiritual, rather than practical and worldly. No Jewish leader, going all the way back to Moses and Abraham, has ever suggested that our people should dominate the world and control other nations. The Bible specifies relatively modest borders for the Holy Land, and repeatedly mentions the much larger, far more formidable empires to the south (Egypt) and to the East (Babylonia, Assyria, Persia). Even during the glory days of ancient Israel under David and Solomon the Jewish state never achieved full control of that promised territory—let alone a world-girdling empire. At that time, as with Israel today, the Jewish people sought only to live unmolested within the confines of their own cherished land, each man “beneath his own vine and own fig tree.”

II. JEWISH PROMINENCE AND SUCCESS IN THE LANDS OF THE DIASPORA

No one can deny that Jews in the United States and in many other nations recently have achieved surprising levels of prosperity and influence but any talk of Jewish “dominance” or “control” in those societies remains the province of neo-Nazi propagandists. There is no significant industry or arena of endeavor – no, not one--in any nation in the world (outside of Israel) in which Jews outnumber or rule over non-Jews. Even the famous Jewish command of Hollywood is an ignorant myth concerning an increasingly international industry in which the prominence of influential Jews has actually decreased in the last seventy years. Most of the pioneering movie studios founded and owned by immigrant Jewish families have either gone out of the movie production business altogether (M-G-M) or else sold out to strikingly non-Jewish corporations (Columbia to the Japanese Sony Corporation, and 20th Century Fox to an Australian descendant of Presbyterian clergy, Rupert Murdoch). The two largest entertainment conglomerates in the world boast board chairmen who are African-American (Richard Parsons at Time Warner) and Arab American (George Mitchell at Disney) neither of whom are remotely Jewish. The yearly lists of Hollywood’s most influential power players, as identified by Premiere Magazine and other sources, regularly show that close to one-fourth of the movers-and-shakers are Jews—a disproportionate showing, to be sure, but hardly an indication of Jewish dominance. Similarly, the Fortune 500 list of the nation’s largest corporations features a top ten ranking that includes three oil companies with strong Arab ties and no affection whatever for Israel, as well as a car company (Ford) founded by one of history’s most outspoken anti-Semites, and a retailer run by conservative Christians from Arkansas (Wal-Mart)—but not a single corporation that was founded, run, or owned by Jews. Among the top 100, at most six (including Home Depot, Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers) could classify in any way as “Jewish companies.” With these incontrovertible facts easy to verify for anyone with access to the internet or a library, it becomes even more difficult to explain the persistent, pernicious and utterly false belief that Jews “own” or “control” most of the world’s banks, newspapers, media companies and other important instiutions. Part of the confusion involves appalling lies and misinformation: many callers to my radio show somehow believe that the Rockefellers are Jewish (they were actually German Christians who arrived in Philadelphia in 1723) or that the Rothschild family—a favorite target of anti-Semites for more than 200 years-- still dominates world banking (the family’s power actually peaked in the Napoleonic era and their influence on the global economy today is either invisible or non-existent).

There is also a tendency on the part of paranoid anti-Semites to search out a few Jewish names even in areas in which Jews play minor roles in order to triumphantly affirm the myth of “Jewish control.” Consider the case of the Bush administration and the frequent, laughably absurd charge that it’s somehow dominated by Jewish “neo-conservatives” who forced the President to make war on Iraq for the sake of Israel. In truth, Jews remained conspicuously absent from positions of authority during the first Bush term: for the first time in more than 65 years (since the Presidency of FDR!) the President’s Cabinet (15 department heads in all) included not a single Jew. The true believers in a Neo-Con cabal invariably cite just two names who held sub-cabinet posts (Paul Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of Defense and Douglas Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy) and a single civilian advisor to the Defense Department (Richard Perle, of the Defense Policy Board) who doesn’t even count as an administration employee. The anti-Semites focus on these names not because of their importance (anyone who believes that Wolfowitz and Feith secretly controlled their imperious, tough-as-nails boss, Don Rumsfeld, knows nothing about Rummy) but because they happen to be Jewish. Similarly, conspiracists like to blame Jews in the Senate for pushing us into war with Iraq, while ignoring the fact that a bare majority of the eleven Jewish Senators at the time (including such fierce anti-war advocates as Russ Feingold and Barbara Boxer) actually voted against the resolution authorizing war –at a time when nearly 80% of their gentile colleagues lined up on the other side to support the President in deposing Saddam Hussein.

To me, one of the most mystifying aspects of the stubborn belief in Jewish influence and power is the notion that our fractious, deeply divided, largely disaffiliated people somehow manages to get together to exert that authority. I’m a Jewish radio talk show host, and so is the appalling (and unfunny) Al Franken of Air America. We agree on nothing, and we’ve both managed to survive several very angry, bitter, public confrontations. Do Jew-haters believe that behind the scenes we receive the same secret memos from Jewish Conspiracy Central, or else get together in dank, shadowy rooms to study the one-hundred-year-old hoax, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”? Less than half of the U.S. Jewish population (alas!) gives to any Jewish charity, or holds membership in any synagogue, Temple, pro-Israel lobbying group, B’nai B’rith lodge, or other Jewish organization.

In this context, the almost mystical, profoundly illogical belief in “Jewish power” based on our over-representation among accountants and dentists amounts to more than a delusion; it is, in fact, a sickness.

III: ISRAEL’S SUCCESS – AND ALLEGEDLY “EXPANSIONIST” AND “IMPERIALIST” NATURE

In order to credit Islamist denunciations of an “Israeli Empire,” or worry that the perennially embattled Jewish state might indeed count as uniquely aggressive and power hungry, one must remain incurably ignorant not only of contemporary history but of rudimentary geography. The merest glance at a map reveals the incontrovertible fact that Israel remains, in every sense, a tiny nation. Egypt alone – representing only one of Israel’s twenty hostile Arab neighbors—is more than 48 times the land area of Israel. Adding together only the various Arab nations (without including other vast Islamic homelands like Iran and Afghanistan and Pakistan), the Arabs control well over 300 times the area of the New Jersey-sized Jewish state. In other words, even before President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran succeeds (God forbid) in his plan to “wipe Israel from the map,” 99.7% of the Arab lands are already free of Jews.

Moreover, for nearly thirty years, Israel has been shrinking and retreating – not expanding – hardly the behavior of an aggressive empire bent on world domination. After capturing the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza and the West Bank in a defensive war in 1967, Israel returned the vast Sinai to Egypt in 1978, agreed to the establishment of a Palestinian State on most of the West Bank and Gaza in 1993, vacated its security zone in Lebanon in 2000, abandoned Gaza entirely in 2005 and, under the current Prime Minister, committed to moving out of nearly all territory in the West Bank in the near future. In retrospect, some of these moves look like horrible policy mistakes, but they unequivocally indicate that there is no basis at all to suggest that Israeli aggression accounts for contemporary anti-Semitism.

The establishment of the modern Jewish state wasn’t a cause of Jew hatred, but a response to Jew hatred—not only in Europe, but throughout the Islamic world where some 800,000 Middle Eastern and North African Jews were driven from their ancient communities and found new homes in Israel. None of Israel’s eight major wars has been about a Jewish lust for new territory. All of them have been about a beleaguered nation’s ceaseless attempts to make its citizens secure from murderous attack in the distinctly limited area of their ancestral homeland. Every Arab child in Lebanon, in Gaza, and in the West Bank could sleep sweet, undisturbed slumber as soon as tomorrow night if the adults once-and-for-all gave up their long-standing project of driving the Jews out of the Middle East.

Contrary to anti-Semitic presumptions, Israel has never demanded special privileges of any kind, but yearns (and bleeds) only for the same rights other nations enjoy: to live undisturbed beside its neighbors without unceasing attack by terrorists, militias and, occasionally, major armies. Montenegro, the newest member of the family of nations after a referendum this year, won independence and worldwide recognition despite the fact that more than 45% of the electorate opposed bringing the nation into existence, and only a bare majority claims Montenegran (as opposed to Serbian) nationality. More than 80% of the residents of Israel are Jewish, and they have fought tenaciously for their nationhood for nearly sixty years. The desire for peaceful borders and acceptance from fanatical neighbors hardly amounts to an Israeli demand of privileged status, but the refusal to grant that recognition reflects the classical attitude of the anti-Semite: that Jews indeed deserve different treatment from all other nations on earth but in a negative, hostile and, ultimately murderous sense.

In conclusion, none of the three obsessive fears of Jew haters—the “Chosen People” concept, Jewish prosperity in the Diaspora, and Israel’s success (so far) in nation-building and self-defense –demonstrates in any way a push for world conquest or superior standing for the children of Abraham. How, then, can we understand the imperishable belief that Jews function as an arrogant, imperious, overbearing people? In a few words, that resentment stems in truth from the age-old Jewish refusal to abandon our separate identity, our irreducible distinctiveness through the millennia. My friends Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin provide the most compelling exposition on this dynamic in their invaluable book, Why the Jews?, recently reissued.

In any event, the logic becomes most accessible when considered in personal, intimate terms. If a small group among your neighbors refuses invitations to worship in your churches and mosques, to eat the food you prepare in your homes, to marry your daughters, to embrace your nationalisms, or to share your enthusiasm for the ultimate, universally applicable perfection of your Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Catholic, Islamic, Nazi or Communist worldview, then it’s all but certain you will resent the members of that stubborn group – and assume that they exclude themselves from elements of your society due to an innate, obnoxious sense of superiority.

For Jews who try to remain faithful to the old covenant, there’s no choice about the unyielding refusal to assimilate and disappear—and no surprise at the angry reaction in much of the world. After all, the Bible repeatedly predicts that response. This realization doesn’t make it any easier to cope with anti-Semitism, but it does make the eternal hatred comprehensible. No matter how inconvenient or unpopular, we get our marching orders from the commandments--including the crucial and celebrated injunction to choose life, for ourselves and our people.

Great column!
This column explains a lot of the anit-semitic feelings and beliefs that some people hold and clarifies for me the reasons for it. Unfortunately there will always be among us people that will attack the Jews no matter how irrational the attacks are; they prefer conspiracy theories to truth any day of the week. Like the old saying goes, a lie travels around the world while truth is still tying its shoes.

Attention Jew haters
It’s interesting how Israel, in contravention of the Geneva Convention, is held to a different standard than all other sovereign nations in a time of war. Hizbullah and Nasrallah are guilty of war crimes against both Israel and the Lebanese civilians that they have intentionally sought to entangle in this war to illicit sympathy from the Islamic street. And world opinion seeks to hold Israel accountable for Hizbullah war crimes.

By analogy, this would be like labeling the brave smoke-jumpers, who battle huge wild fires in the American west, as arsonists because they strategically set back fires to deprive the raging inferno of fuel. Israel too must set backfires to prevent the true Islamist arsonists from setting conflagration to the whole globe.

Medved is correct; the only rational explanation for this bizarre double standard applied to Israel is an irrational hatred and mistrust of Jews… not just of Israel. There is latent anti-Semitism apparent in the coverage of this war too.

My sympathy toward the Lebanese people who are not active supporters of Hizbullah is not conditioned on any tabulation of casualty numbers. Whether it is one innocent Lebanese death or ten thousand deaths they are all tragic. My moral compass, however, is not affected by the number of deaths on either side, but rather I hold Hizbullah accountable for civilian deaths on both sides. Under international law, specifically the Geneva Convention, the actor who precipitates hostilities cannot thus co-mingle with the civilian population and continue to attack its intended target; moreover upon contravention of this rule, such an actor is wholly responsible for any civilian deaths resulting from the response of the intended target of the aggressor. Thus the Qana tragedy [if we presume it was not staged by Hizbullah] would still be the fault of Hizbullah.

The rules forbidding adversarial parties from executing hostilities amongst civilian populations [As Hizbullah did at Qana] seeks to establish a universal policy minimizing civilian casualties during times of conflict. If current global opinion holding Israel accountable for all Lebanese civilian deaths [but specifically those at Qana] were the basis of a new standard, it would lead to the unintended result of international law incenting all parties of a conflict, be it military, militia or terrorist group to intentionally hide amongst and bring hostilities to civilian populations. This would obviously lead to disastrous consequences.

Moral clarity is needed not just to minimize the suffering and deaths in this conflict but to maintain a precedent well established in modern warfare. The Islamists benefit every time the western mainstream media confuse empathy with causation under international law. We all should empathize with innocent civilians on both sides of this conflict; however, the severity of this suffering is not determinative or even relevant to determining causation of the suffering and finally assigning blame for it. It appears to me as if the international community simply measures which side is suffering more as if it's a contest, the party suffering the most on a very superficial basis earns the community's sympathy [the "sympathy test"]. The agenda is thereby set by what images the mainstream media decides to manipulate under the pretext of “journalism”.

The international community has predetermined Lebanon to be the victim and Israel to be the aggressor and it knows the test of weighing and balancing the rights of the parties to this conflict under settled international law favor Israel's position so it becomes necessary to selectively report the conflict under a "sympathy test" rather than apply the strict rules of international law.

Anti-semitism
Excellent piece.

It is worth noting, I think, that responsible representatives of the Christian faith, such as the late Pope John Paul II in 2000, have the decency to acknowledge and apologize for anti-semitism.

Islam, on the other hand, glorifies in it and its Clerics teach it.

Articulately stated and quite true, all of it. I thought this column was great, and I intend to store it for future use and perusal so I might use it in subsequent arguments. I find myself fighting DAILY for Israel and the Jews. Only yesterday, a black friend of mine--blacks aren't racist, remember?--told me "All Jews are rich" and "Their Bible says to destroy the Muslims." Lord! I couldn't believe the bigotry and ignorance. I had to calmly explain what the Bible said, that Muslims didn't exist till well after the Bible (OT) was written (after all, Mohammed had to copy from it or he wouldn't have a religion), and that to say "All Jews are rich" is the equivalent of "All blacks are uneducated" (i.e., a bigoted, obviously false, and ignorant statement). He weaseled his way out of that one and went on to other arguments, like the Jews had rejected certain "lost tribes." It continually astounds me, the treatment the Jewish people endure. I'm going to start saying I'm Jewish and watch the responses I get from people. Could be interesting.

Islam is an aberration worthy of being called, in the words of Jesus, "the abomination of desolation." Islam is the New Cathage, a murderous Moloch state that kills its own children in the name of the god it worships. Like the Old Carthage before it 2100 years ago, it must be destroyed, lest it destroy us first.

Re: Whatever...
thirteenburn writes: "5 Kaytusha rockets fall harmlessly into Israel, and is met with three days of carpet bombing and the killing of hundreds of civilians. Kind of one sided."

Apparently you didn't read Medved's article - or much else for that matter. Your ignorance of the current war between Israel and Hezbollah is likely exceeded only by your ignorance of the history of that entire region. This much is painfully evident from your post.

thirteenburn: I'm a conservative who doesn't side with Israel, but not because of some ridiculous bias or bigotry...But yet Israel who feels it has to defend itself(from what? kidnappers?)slaughters innocents and we're supposed to feel sorry for Israel...Just because I don't agree with Israel, doesn't mean that I'm biggoted...Here's an analogy people. Israel is treating Hezbollah as a large, angry hill of ants...The collective stupidity of the liberal mind is truly breathtaking. And evidently, the same could be said for the conservative mind as well.

You appear far too ignorant and entirely too stupid to be a conservative, in spite of the gratuitous swipe you took at liberals. Please go back to DailyKos, HuffPo, MoveOn - or wherever it is you prattle your asininity - and crawl back under the rock.

Hatred that demands blood
There are three main reasons why people have hated Jews. While some Jews are successful in banking, law, and medicine, many are not. IQ tracks genetically (like music) and some Jewish families carry these traits. However, much of the hatred does not come from the envy of ability

The main reason people hate Jews is similar to the reason ethnic Chinese are hated in SE Asia. They do not mix. For hundreds of years they only marry within their group, they retain their language and customs, and they resist the temptation to squander their wealth. There is implicit insult in remaining apart. Having people respond to this “insult” is part of the price one has to bear for maintaining exclusivity.

There is a second reason that the Jews are intensely hated. The Bible speaks of historical periods where permission is given to Satan to attack the Jews. He did it at the birth of Moses and at the birth of Christ. There are also periods of national punishment for turning away from God described in the Bible.

While there is little one can do about the judgments of God (except respond in humility and seek forgiveness – as in the book of Judges), there is some room to maneuver regarding the first reason.

An Australian once observed the difference between England and the US. He said, “In England if a poor man sees a rich man in a Rolls Royce, he hates the rich man. In the US if a poor man sees a rich man with a Rolls Royce he says, I’m going to get one of those”.

Being exclusive automatically breeds a degree of hostility. Being exclusive and having wealth adds to the hostility. Being exclusive, having wealth, and using that wealth to either get more wealth or control events of those you are excluding brings even greater hostility.

There was a TV movie called “What the deaf man heard”. The story was set in the South and as an incidental plot, described a wealthy black family. This family insisted that the family members live in poor houses with trash on the lawns so that no one would suspect that they were wealthy. This reflected a sensitivity to the potentially hostile environment in which they lived. It might not have been "fair" or "right", but it was practical.

In the US, if it appears that our involvement in Iraq was a wasted effort of lives and money, people may begin to become more hostile to those who pushed for us to get involved.

The real difficulty for the Jews comes from the third reason people hate the Jews. It is not widely reported in the US how Arab children are taught from birth to hate Jews. Israel has neighbors who lust for their death. Few things could make an Arab mother more proud than her child killing Jews.

This can be called institutional hatred. Once it is held past a generation, it becomes part of the fabric of a culture. It was seen in Northern Ireland. It can be pictured in microcosm in blood feuds like the Hatfields and McCoys.

Some of this blood hatred can be seen against the ethnic Chinese in SE Asia. However, the most intense and widespread is the hatred against the Jews by the Arabs. People who descend to this level of hatred are prisoners they will never be free from what the Bible calls a “root of bitterness”. It poisons a whole life.

A person who has blood hatred cannot be reasoned with. Conspiracy theories (which should be axiomatically dismissed as they imply competence) are just thin supports on which to hang hatred. The hatred is irrational (passionate and emotional) there is no way to resolve or refute it with logic.

For the Jews in the US, experiencing a snub or a hurtful comment may be unpleasant. For the Jews in Israel the blood hatred of millions of neighbors that is both growing in intensity and the technical skill to act on that hatred is cause for more alarm.

Once we understand the hatred of Israel, we need to decide what we are going to do. The attacks will only grow in intensity. Do we fight to protect Israel? Do we open our country as a refuge for all who wish to leave (as we didn’t do in WWII)? Or do we turn our back on people who even with nuclear weapons might eventually be exterminated?

to thirteenburn
C'mon, brother, you can't be serious, right? Rockets raining down on your cities, your civilians injured and dying, your territory encroached upon across an international border that ISRAEL RESPECTS according the UNSCR 1559, your soldiers kidnapped and murdered. And not only this one incident, but an ongoing pattern of this violence. And Israel is--what?--supposed to just take it? Or maybe it's supposed to be "proportionate"--firing a few rockets, "kidnapping" a few terrorists, and maintaining a status quo. Look, I'm not going to accuse you an anti-Semitism b/c in my mind, you're obviously not an anti-Semite (no railing against the "neo-cons" or the "Israel lobby," e.g.). But be reasonable here. If you're a true conservative, certainly you understand the need--nay, the drive--to protect oneself, one's family, one's homeland from aggression.

Your ant analogy, sir, is not a good one. For in attempting to liquidate the terrorist threat, Israel is certainly not "kicking the ant hill." That would imply that it is somehow inflaming the hill's inhabitants without actually being committed to the destruction of said ants. This might be a good argument if, for example, Israel were occupying Lebanon. No, Israel is trying to eliminate this threat (Hizbullah) entirely, like spraying pesticide on the ant mound. It might get them running around angry for a while, but the goal is their DESTRUCTION. And I pray that destruction is exacted with all speed.

In other words, I would agree that "kicking the ant mound" is not a good policy if that were what was truly going on. It's not, so we don't agree.

Medved's questionable rhetoric
Medved says: "Similarly, conspiracists like to blame Jews in the Senate for pushing us into war with Iraq, while ignoring the fact that a bare majority of the eleven Jewish Senators at the time (including such fierce anti-war advocates as Russ Feingold and Barbara Boxer) actually voted against the resolution authorizing war –at a time when nearly 80% of their gentile colleagues lined up on the other side to support the President in deposing Saddam Hussein."

This is a very misleading bit of rhetoric: no one ever claimed that every Jew was on board. Even if eighty percent of Jewish Americans were opposed to the war in Iraq, that doesn't mean that Jews don't have significant influence on American foriegn policy.

I find it interesting that Medved glides right past the recent controversy stirred up by the Mearshiemer Walt paper which re-states the fact that, according to congressional aides. the Jewish lobby is the second most powerful lobby in the United States, right behind AARP.

In other words, Jews really do have an inordinate amount of power in the goverenment of the most powerful nation on earth.

Why doesn't Medved address this?

Could it be that he doesn't want to raise the subject for fear of alerting Americans to this inconvenient truth.

Personally, I have always wondered what all of the controversy was about, and I've always had a special fondness for Jews individually. But frankly, when I read a piece like this it makes me more suspicious, not less, because it leaves out the single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world.

Until this issue is confonted head on, without any tricky rhetoric (which Michael is so good at) I'm sure the suspicion of the Jews will continue.

Re: Hatred that demands blood
timf writes: "There are three main reasons why people have hated Jews..."

Excellent post, Tim. It is lucid, concise and well written and it does further justice to Medved's analysis.

An Outside Source
Jewish hatred is supernatural in nature. The Jews are God's chosen people, thus, Satan hates them with an eternal hatred--an extension of his hatred of the Father.

Read Hitler, read modern Muslims; you see a hatred so powerful, so irrational--you know it has an "outside" source.

Disproportionate?
I saw a cartoon the other day that expressed perfectly the reason so many civilians in Lebanon have died in the recent fighting. One frame showed a view through a sniper-scope of a group of Israeli soldiers surrounding women and children to protect them. The next frame showed a sniper-scope view of a group of Hezbollah terrorists trying to hide in the middle of a throng of women and children. 'Nuff said.
If you believe in God (good), then it stands to reason that you also acknowledge the existence of Satan (evil). The world (as it belongs to Satan since the incident in the Garden of Eden) is against the Jews because the Jews brought God back to the world (Abraham) and Satan has been trying to destroy them ever since. The fact that they are still around speaks volumes to the fact that they are "God's Chosen People."

To Swift
I've had many similar experiences to that which u describe. It's sad to see so many comments here by people who support Israel based on ethical, moral and legal reasoning having to qualify their statements with "I'm not a Jew, but..."; as if their comments wouldn't otherwise be valid if they were Jewish.

To me, this trivial observation even reinforces Medved's point further. Jews r often not even accorded the benefit that their opinions regarding the Middle East may be objective and not intrinsically linked to some sort of genetic Jew-bias agenda.

It's funny how when ppl like thirteen speak in favor of the Islamists there is no suspicion that he may secretly be a Muslim with an agenda that colors his opinion. It is safe to speak out against the Jews anywhere in the world without fear of reprisals from the "Jewish Street". Do we automatically presume Muslim commentators must be biased the same way many do about Jewish ones? Even where the evidence, most recently the Reuters scandal, might support a reasonable suspicion against them?

It's just another double standard Jews must face.

Re: Medved's questionable rhetoric
Phylo Se Fizer writes “Medved says: "Similarly, conspiracists like to blame Jews in the Senate for pushing us into war with Iraq, while ignoring the fact that a bare majority of the eleven Jewish Senators at the time (including such fierce anti-war advocates as Russ Feingold and Barbara Boxer) actually voted against the resolution authorizing war –at a time when nearly 80% of their gentile colleagues lined up on the other side to support the President in deposing Saddam Hussein." This is a very misleading bit of rhetoric: no one ever claimed that every Jew was on board.

Neither did Medved. You completely missed his point.

Phylo Se Fizer: "Even if eighty percent of Jewish Americans were opposed to the war in Iraq, that doesn't mean that Jews don't have significant influence on American foriegn policy."

On the other hand, it wouldn’t lend much weight to such a claim, either. The sword cuts both ways here, Phylo.

Phylo Se Fizer: "I find it interesting that Medved glides right past the recent controversy stirred up by the Mearshiemer Walt paper which re-states the fact that, according to congressional aides. the Jewish lobby is the second most powerful lobby in the United States, right behind AARP. In other words, Jews really do have an inordinate amount of power in the goverenment of the most powerful nation on earth. Why doesn't Medved address this? Could it be that he doesn't want to raise the subject for fear of alerting Americans to this inconvenient truth."

I can’t speak for Medved but my guess is that the Walt-Mearsheimer “report” wasn’t worth the time and column inches he’d have to expend to debunk it for the tripe that really is: a collection of innuendo, half truths, and outright misrepresentations It is a work without a trace of balance, in essence no more than an angry polemic disguised as academic research.

“The Israel Lobby” is a long, bitter, op-ed piece given a patina of respectability because of where the authors are employed. They may feel themselves protected from criticism by tenure and their titles. They live and work in the proverbial ivory towers of an academic environment that has become an Arab-subsidized lobby against Israel.

Walt and Mearsheimer obviously have an ax to grind. They don’t much care for Israel, and they resent the power of those whom they believe have influenced American policymakers to support Israel in its long conflict with some of the Arab states and the Palestinians. The authors do pay lip service to defending Israel’s right to exist. But their attacks on Israel fail every basic test of fairness, and lead one to believe they would prefer a world without Israel.

Phylo Se Fizer: “Personally, I have always wondered what all of the controversy was about, and I've always had a special fondness for Jews individually."

To which controversy are you referring: the fact that anti-Semitism is a world-wide contagion or the questionable bona fides of the Walt-Mearscheimer report? By any chance is your "special fondess" for Jews individually offset by any special suspicion or loathing of Jews collectively? Just wondering.

Phylo Se Fizer: “But frankly, when I read a piece like this it makes me more suspicious, not less, because it leaves out the single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world.”

And that single most significant reason is…? Don't leave us hanging. Do tell.

Phylo Se Fizer: "Until this issue is confonted head on, without any tricky rhetoric (which Michael is so good at) I'm sure the suspicion of the Jews will continue. Phylo out."

Out to lunch, apparently. The vague evasiveness of your post raises hackles of suspicion, alright, but not of the Jews or their motives.

Re: An Outside Source
pilgrim writes: "Jewish hatred is supernatural in nature."

I suspect that the impulsion for it certainly has an Infernal source.

pilgrim: "The Jews are God's chosen people, thus, Satan hates them with an eternal hatred--an extension of his hatred of the Father."

And of the Son. Jesus was a Jew and a descendent of King David. If, as I and other Christians believe, He is God incarnate then it makes all the more sense that Satan is even further infuriated with the Jews.

pilgrim: "Read Hitler, read modern Muslims; you see a hatred so powerful, so irrational--you know it has an "outside" source."

Indeed. And the very thought sends chills up my spine. All the more reason for the battle standard under which all Jews and Christians must unite if we are to survive: ISLAMO DELENDA EST. Islam must be destroyed.

Middleman Minorities
In Thomas Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" he has an essay entitled "Are Jews Generic". In this essay he reviews the animosity and hatred exhibited towards certain middlemen minorities throughout the world and asks the question why that is and what distinguishes these groups from the larger society in which they exist.

In the end though the Jews are not unique in their persecution, perhaps in the length and documentation of it but not the underlying animus. Whether Jews, or Ibos in Nigeria, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, Indians in South America, Chinese in SE Asia, or Korean merchants in the inner city, these groups engage in certain economic activities and adopt certain values which distinguish them from the community at large. This makes them targets of envy which can be enflamed to murderous rage by self serving demogogues.

Adolf Hitler was quoted as saying that if he hadn't had the Jews he would've had to invent them. The current scenario in the middle east is merely a reprise of the human condition by a group of totalitarians using Islam as the justification for their designs. If it isn't the Jews it will be someone else i.e. Christian/Crusaders that will be demogogued and used as the pretext for their murderous designs. The problem of course isn't Israel or the Jews in general but the Islamofascists who are bent on world domination.

I'ld encourage anyone who is truly interested in understanding this dynamic to read Dr Sowell's essay.

Resentment
I think much of the hatred of Jews stems from resentment.

Much of the most notable success of Jews has been in the financial market. Since many religions prohibited borrowing and paying interest among their followers (Muslims still do)the field of finance was wide open to any group that could intellectual manage the business.

Jews focused on the field, often gaining a virtual monopoly in finance and grew wealthy. Since many people were (and still are) ignorant of financial arrangements they were suspicious of the success and wealth Jews accumulated via this avenue. Throw in the fact that they operated in a close, virtually closed community, strongly supported each other in multiple business arrangements (successful largely because of the trust and responsibility preached by Judaism) and the fact that they were a "odd" minority virtually everywhere they lived and you've got a great formula for distrust, resentment and fear of their power.

I believe resentment of American power and success is behind much of the political attitudes of modern Europe towards the US. Much of the world's people don't understand our concept of freedom (much less capitalism) and, cosquently, are easily swayed by propaganda that implies we are just as "Imperialistic" as any of the old, depotic, regimes with which most of the world is all too familiar.

How do you fight resentment? Well, since resentment is a feeling it is hard to combat it. Rationally, Europe and other nations should be grateful for all the aid we have provided over the years. As I said, if people don't understand us, the foundation of our power and success, it will be nearly impossible to overcome this "feeling" until they reach a point where they, themselves, understand freedom and why free markets work best.

Maybe most Americans support Israel because we admire what they've built despite incredible opposition. Sadly, we may be the only peoples who understand their success, their desire to freely exercise their religion and their determination to relentlessly fight their enemies.

The Rest of the Story
The Jewish people are a unique people, but not that unique. Just a surface reading of the OT writings reveal an animosity toward the true God (their God who created them and will save them) as all other people in the world. Much too humbling a thought for the Jewish mind.

Phylo IS finally out
Phylo writes, "Why doesn't Medved address this?

Could it be that he doesn't want to raise the subject for fear of alerting Americans to this inconvenient truth."

It's more likely that Michael, having already composed a long-by-TH-standards piece, did not want to waste column inches on an academic report with all the validity of "Jud Suss."

Phylo contiunes, "Personally, I have always wondered what all of the controversy was about, and I've always had a special fondness for Jews individually."

I had to laugh when I read this -- what an elegant, delciate way of restating the classic line, "Some of my best friends are Jews!"

"But frankly, when I read a piece like this it makes me more suspicious, not less, because it leaves out the single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world."

And that reason is...? Cite your source -- though I should warn you, the sane world has already rejected "The Protocols."

"Until this issue is confonted head on, without any tricky rhetoric (which Michael is so good at) I'm sure the suspicion of the Jews will continue."

Yeah, keep your eye on those Jews and their "tricky rhetoric" -- when you can tear yourself away from your bootleg copy of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL.

Jews and Catholics
Wednesday Aug. 9th. It is the feast day of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Better known as Edith Stien. Edith Stein was born of Jewish parents in 1891, becoming an influential philosopher following he extensive studies at major German universites. Following her conversion to Catholicism she became a major force in German intellectual life, entering the Discalced Carmelites in 1933. Sister Teresa Benedicta was arrested by the Nazi regime in 1942, along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction, and transported by cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. She died in the gas chambers at Auschwitz that same year.

Teresa was one of those non-practicing Jews that Michael was talking about in hes column. She was simply an intellectual. It was only after reading the autobiograpy of St. Teresa of Avila that Edith was moved to look closer at Christianity. Eventually she came into the Church and ultimatlly became a Carmelite nun. She never stopped being Jewish, however. There is much more that could be said about her but I will that to others.

May God bless all the jewish people today through St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and all those have given theirs lives for the Jewesh people.

Peace

Why Jews are successful
I've always believed that Jews have been successful as a group because they have a tendency to help and support each other rather than taking a dog eat dog attitude toward their fellows. The whole world could take a lesson from them.

Re: Resentment
jag writes: "I think much of the hatred of Jews stems from resentment..."

Another well-thought out and well written post.

greetings to Phylo
Hey, you're becoming like an old friend on here, though one I disagree with often. Medved's piece "leaves out the single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world," you say. Seriously... what? You can't get over the "Israel Lobby" paper, can you? It's as if its release was just what you were waiting for, confirming what you have always ignorantly believed. Have you read the stinging criticims of that paper, if only the ones that bring it down for its deplorable scholarship? You ought to. You'd lose faith in it.

The double standard rears its head again. If the "Israel Lobby" (which is no lobby at all, but a decentralized set of different interest groups) is second only the AARP, why don't we question retired persons' desire to control the world? After all, if they're the most powerful lobbying firm in the most powerful country on earth, certainly the old folks are wielding an enormous amount of power in the world. Those seniors want to bring us all down and control us all! Ludicrous. No one would argue that. It's similarly ludicrous to think that this amorphous "Israel Lobby" desires to control the world. It only "sits right" with you because of the bullsh*t you've been fed and your unjustified belief in desires for Jewish domination. Do you KNOW the history of the Jews? Do you realize that they have always been rejected communities? Enslaved communities? Do you recognize that when Jews first came to this country, they were at the bottom of the food chain, not unlike my Italian ancestors, and worked their arses off (even on the Sabbath some of them!) to make their way here? And they did well for themselves, as did many other ethnic groups, including the Italians, the Irish, the Germans, and many more.

WHY ARE THEY SINGLED OUT BY YOU? WHAT IS THE MOTIVE HERE? I continue to ask this question and you continue to avoid providing a good answer.

Furthermore, if the "Israel Lobby" wields so much power on Capitol Hill, one must wonder why. I'll tell you: it's because a majority of congressman and senators SUPPORT ISRAEL and a majority of the American people SUPPORT ISRAEL. So our policy towards Israel is nothing more than a reflection of our nat'l sentiment. It's people like you, who gnash their teeth at it, that whine and complain that "the Lobby" wields "too much power." And since that doesn't make any sense, you make the claim that you suspect the Jews desire to take over the world. What bullsh*t.

Re: Phylo IS finally out
DocNoleCat writes: ""Phylo out"-- of the closet as a bigot. And here I thought you were an intelligent, if misguided leftist. I won't make that mistake again. Enjoy your rallies with Mencken and Raidencraig."

Heh heh heh. Right on, Doc. It's all in the technique....plus the correct lb.-test fishing line and the proper bait. Sure enough, it isn't long before the average, bottom-feeding, leftist Jew-hater gloms the hook. And there is no need to reel them in - they head straight for the surface as soon as the hook is set.

Alien thinking
The success of the Jewish people is because of the grace of God.

World view
All of us have controlling sets of assumptions. For the godless, we're all just matter. Avoidance of pain, seeking of pleasure and comfort until the molecules re-arrange at death is the basic assumption. Arbitrary standards and codes can be erected to try for order amongst one another, but ultimately, standards are arbitrary and depend on some heavy hands to enforce them. Love, faith, goodness tend to be viewed as chemical functions unique to the narrow spectrum of matter that we call "life."
God accepting and/or fearing ones accept and believe that higher authority exists outside of "systems of men." The higher authority has the right/power/knowledge to command fealty and extablish rules of conduct. Additionally, this world of material substance is not the "real" world, but one where we pass some time. Death is not final, and people generally pass into the world wherein their fealty has lain in this world. Love, faith, goodness, etc. are viewed as attributes of Deity and to varying degrees are exportable from the controlling realm of Deity and importable into our existence. Often, humans are held responsible, by Deity, for learning how to import those attributes and model them for citizens who are not convinced of the "truth" of Deity's claims.
An honest divulging of personal worldview is necessary for clear communication between people. I, as a Christian believer, cannot easily discuss standards of behavior predicated on concepts of "right" and "wrong" with a person that does not have codified standards to which he/she strives to adhere. Indeed, if I insist on maintaining fealty to my God's standards by not assimilating with unbelievers, animosity, suspicion, and hatred are often the result if the other party does not remotely accept my worldview.
Many of our blogs and entries are posted with undeclared, but assumed, world views. Hence, many bloggers despise the phrase "The Bible says," or "The Torah declares." People who profess fealty to Deity must defer to Deity's authority. People who profess no fealty to Deity must honestly declare what their world view is and to whom they owe allegiance. Then, communication may be possible.
Lastly, let those who do not profess any "faith" in any supernatural authorities honestly declare where their allegiance lies. As for Medved and Israel, we know. Let those who hate Israel and Jews openly declare why, so that all may see, hear, and respond as best we can.

This is so amusing
All this fear of Israel taking over the world. Very, very amusing.

I'm a Christian. I also belive the Bible is the unerrant Word of God. ...Yes, I'm one of "those people".

As such, I view the Jews as my lost brothers and sisters. Regardless of what other "so call Christians" want to say, through their foolish beliefs in "replacement theology", when the Bible, New Testament included, says that Jesus is going to rule and reign from Jerusalem in Israel, and establigh Israel as His kingdom, it means just that - Isreal is going to dominate the other nations of the world, under the rule of Christ. The "Church" is not Israel's replacement in the New Testament (ie: when the Bible says Israel, it means Israel, and not the Church).

Back to my point. Once you understand what the Bible says is going to happen, that Christ is going to rule from Jerusalem and Israel is still God's chosen people, you next have to decide if it's the truth or not - is the Bible for real or is it all made up mumbo-jumbo. Well, funny thing is, even if you are an atheist, you can't deny what Psalm 83 says concerning this current war going on in the Middle East right now. And even funnier is that God prophesied this war between Israel and Islam, in writing, some 1500 years or more before Islam even came into existence around 600 AD!!

You can lie to yourself and deny all you want that God exists, but you can't get around the fact that His Word has prophesied not only what has already come to pass, but what is happening right now. Just open up the Bible yourself and try reading Psalm 83, and Ezekiel 37-39 as well. Isn't it just amazing how God even told us what countries would form a confederation against Israel?!

All I have to say to the unbelievers and those that hate the Jews because of their plans to conquor the world, is this - if Israel all of a sudden decides to wipe Demascus off the map, then you best drop to your knees and ask forgiveness because the Bible says there ain't much time left for ya!

An atheist friend of Jews
Even though I'm an atheist, sometimes it's hard not to give credence to the idea that there is something "supernatural" behind hatred of the Jews! It's really a bizarre phenomenon.

In my observation, Jews actually seem to make a greater effort to "fit in" with their adopted societies than many other groups. Jehovah's Witnesses, Quakers, and the Amish and Mennonites in the U.S. refuse the obligation of military service--as far as I can tell, most Jews don't. I don't have Jews knocking at my door trying to tell me about their faith, but I do get that from J.W.'s and Mormons. I haven't noticed any efforts by Jews to badger non-Jews into giving them special treatment or privileges. I have no idea why the other things Jews do to "separate" themselves should bother anyone--it doesn't hurt anybody and it's no one else's business.

I suppose in more homogenous, "tribalistic" societies groups like the Jews might be viewed with more suspicion ... Gypsies can get a pretty bad rap too, for example. Still, there seems to be a special viciousness reserved for Jew-hatred.

The evidence of history suggests to me that Jews have almost invariably blessed, benefited, and uplifted the societies they've been a part of ... as businessmen, politicians, attorneys, scientists, doctors, musicians, artists, entertainers, and just good, peaceful, law-abiding, productive, self-sufficient citizens.

On the other hand--and I'm sorry if this sounds "racist" or anything--any objective look at the effects Muslim immigrants are having on their host societies shows that those effects are largely negative. Rising crime rates, including rape. Lack of initiative and productivity (except when it comes to making babies). Heavy dependence on government dole. Little effort to contribute to society in positive ways, yet lots and lots of whining and complaining and claiming "victimhood" status. Endless efforts to secure special treatment.

I don't know. I think at various times of human history, large numbers of people seem to get a hankering to indulge the dark, irrational, sensual, morally lazy, self-indulgent, tribalistic, primitive aspects of human nature, and since Jews make them feel guilty about doing that, the Jews must go.

An Appeal For Information
This is a request:

Does anyone on this site know of a good, authoritative exposition on the marital rites of jews?

If not, can anyone give insight into how jews have dealt with marriage choices over the centuries and whether and to what extent these mechanisms are adhered to in America and modern day Israel?

Medved aludes to this in his article but he doesn't elaborate.

I don't want a leftist or politically correct version.

As Joe Friday said (I think):

"Just the facts, Mam."

Hey Tigger
I second your post, with a possible caveat. I think our experience with judaism is limited to its non-religious features. We admire jews for their diligence and industry. I must confess that I know very little about the religion of judaism. I only make this observation because I have an aversion to religious fanaticism of any kind. I want to exempt judaism from this aversion, because of the reasons you cite. Making this exemption feels a little disingenuous. Am I wrong?

I second Lydia's Bravo!
And agree with her statement that "Your essay was brilliant and beautifully written." And as Flagwaver observes "This column explains a lot of the anti-semitic feelings and beliefs that some people hold and clarifies for me the reasons for it." I find very enlightening as well.

Many of you 'True' conservatives posting on the subject are brilliant as well. But as expected the "Stuck On Stupid" Liberals will attack in unison. As DocNoleCat notes in his last line.

Re: ying yang
Shimon writes: So the Jewish love fest by Medved and Victor Davis Hansen along with numerous pundits and Chest beating media cheering Israel on, is in your opinion on the side of Truth!

If, by “chest-beating media” you are referring to the MSM, including the major news agencies such as Reuters and AP, then you need to either increase or decrease whatever medication you are taking for your mental illness. That, or come out of your cave every now and then.

Shimon: “I remember Israeli Soldiers visiting Kosovo and handing out candy to Muslim Albanian Children playing around demolished Churches. How come that didn't earn them any Good Will with the Muslim World?”

Perhaps because the Muslim World wants to exterminate them, their fellow Jews, all Christians and the remainder of the non-Muslim World. Wake up and smell the jihad, moron.

Shimon: “I also read numerous Liberal Jews cheering Nato's slicing of Yugoslavia in support of the invading Muslim Albanian Squatters. In My opinion the Jews will not rest until they bring about Worldwide persecution of the Christians, ala Soviet Union.

Your opinion has been duly noted and duly laughed at

Shimon: “These articles are just immunosuppresants for the Western Culture that is asleep at the wheel as it is being led to extinction.”

Led by whom, Einstein? The Jews? And at whose hands…the Muslims’? You got it backward. Here’s a hint: grasp your left ear firmly with your left hand. Then grasp your right ear firmly with your right hand. Now pull very, very hard. With any luck, you will have succeeded in pulling your head out of your arse.

Forgotten words of Jesus Christ…

Mr. Medvid, we do not expect historical revisionism from you.

“…the whole idea of the “Chosen People” has never brought the assumption that God selected us for unusual political, military or even economic authority. The Bible suggests that the Jews will be “a nation of priests and a holy nation” --- not some sort of all-conquering superpower within the Middle East or the world at large. Our tradition has always defined Jewish power as spiritual, rather than practical and worldly.” –Michael Medved

What was the reason the Jewish leadership rejected Jesus Christ? Was it not because they expected Messiah to conquer as King David and reign over an extended earthly kingdom? They wanted nothing to do with the Man who preached a kingdom where peace and righteousness reigned. When the people wanted to make Him their king after He fed them, He withdrew from them. [John 6:15] “The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” [Romans 14]

Consider these words from the one identified as the stone which the builders rejected, but has become the chief corner stone…He is hated by the whole world including the Jewish people.

“Hear another parable: [Matthew 21] There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?” They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the LORD’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?
[Psalm 118]

“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them.

Let's take the next step with this info
Talk to Jim Dobson about doing a show or two on the subject. It would be good to enlighten the evangelical community on this history.

To Rogue Historian
The late Zola Leavitt wrote a book "An Israelie Love Story" (Pretty sure the title, positive on the author). In it, he describes the ancient and modern parts of courtship and marriage. He also draws parallels between Jesus of Nazereth's discourse on the bridal party coming at midnight, the cry "behold the bridegroom cometh," etc. Very insightful reading.
cheers

thanks Prof, I'll look it up!

More reasons Jews might be hated
Michael,

You make excellent points, but there is a unique case I know of in which a Hasidic community engenders some ill will. Without being too specific as to location, I lived in a town in Orange County, NY that had an isolated but extensive Hasidic community. They largely keep to themselves, but at shared parks, they watched their children play and laughed just like anyone else. However, as a whole they were a huge tax drain on the town and apparently determinedly so. As was explained to me by a school board member with insight into town finances, the Hasidic community were disproportionate welfare recipients, meanwhile expecting and receiving public services such as but not limited a separate school system not available to the town in general. The community leaders ensured this situation by wielding an effective voting block.

Yes, some of this is hearsay and I no longer live there to follow up my understanding more expertly, but in this situation, it's difficult for a Conservative not to resent a community that determinedly consumes more than they contribute. Like Islamic Fundamentalists that do not represent Islam in general but effectively color the perceptions of the world, this minority of the Jewish population fuels the fire of anti-Semtism by the poor example it sets for its neighbors.

nemo particularis
You are a complete idiot.

The single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world is the fact that the Jewish lobby is the second most powerful lobby in the United States. I don't know how to make that any clearer.

And your ad hominum attacks on Mearshiemer and Walt's paper do not impress me. Try throwing a little substance in there pal.

Phylo out.

ad hominum
An ad hominum attack is an informal fallacy whereby the character of an arguer or opponent is called a defaming name so as to avoid dealing with the argument itself. For example, if I were to say: "You are a complete idiot" when addressing someone, I might rightfully be suspected of making an ad hominum attack. Any ensuing information that I may give after that could more easily be dismissed since I have neglected any semblance of respect for others.
Additionally, an unstated assumption by Mr. Phylo is that the U.S. is trying to take over the world. Being the second largest lobby in the Quaker community might suggest that the lobbying group is trying to be the most pacifistic group in the Quaker community. By stating that the Jews are the second largest lobby in the U.S. and saying that that is evidence that they are trying to take over the world assumes that the U.S. is trying to take over the world and that the Jews are riding the wave. Since AARP is the largest lobby in the U.S., we may similarly assume that the senior citizens of the U.S. are the most active group trying to take over the world. Since I don't want to take over the world, I have not joined them! = )
Cheers to Phylo, and watch the grey hair set!

Re: nemo particularis
Phylo Se Fizer writes: "You are a complete idiot."

For the purpose of this discussion I will assume you are directing that at me and not at your own reflection.

Phlyo: "The single most significant reason for suspecting the Jews of a desire to control the world is the fact that the Jewish lobby is the second most powerful lobby in the United States. I don't know how to make that any clearer."

You attempted to do so by citing a highly suspect source that, in all probability you never even read, much less fact-checked.

Phylo: "And your ad hominum attacks on Mearshiemer and Walt's paper do not impress me. Try throwing a little substance in there pal."

I'm tired of having to do an idiot's homework for him.

Go here: http://www.americanthinker.com/articles.php?article_id=5342 and read it. Peruse the links and avail yourself of the facts, although in this case I doubt you will even bother. The kind of tripe peddaled by these Twins of Tautology is just the kind of red meat people of your ilk drool to sink their teeth into and their screeching is music to your ears.

You will believe that which you choose to believe and I will believe that which I choose to believe. And that fundamental fact is the essence of the rift we now see occurring all around the world and in our own country.

The old borders and divisions are falling away and society today is heavily polarized along liberal vs conservative lines. Liberals gravitate to a certain worldview that is diametrically opposite to that of conservatives. As there is precious little in the way of common ground there can be no conciliation or compromise.

The battle lines are being drawn. The division grows wider as the chasm between us grows deeper. Sooner or later there will be another Civil War, and this one looks like it's headed for the world stage.

Is Mel Gibson an ex. of antiSemitism?
I made this point in another author's blog. Many of us were brought up in prejudiced homes and neighborhoods but we overcame these bigotted and racists views. However, there is no forgetting the past and memory is not simply photographic. More accurately, we can our past and change our outlook, but the past is always a part of us.

I suspect Mel Gibson is just such an example. His father was infamously anti-semitic as evidenced by his Holocaust denying statements. Mel's father was one of his first, but not his last teacher. Mel's work and family example are evidence that he has overcome his past as well as any of us can. However, in contrast to claims that alcohol is a truth serum, I believe it to be a memory re-hasher, similar to the phenomenon that occurs when we dream of our childhood as if we are in fact still children in the dream.

Falling off the wagon as he did, his physical and mental responses would predictably be negative. His unfortunate actions may have raised the discussion of anti-semitism, but Mel Gibson does not deserve his life and career to be ruined by an already deeply embarrassing event nor painted as an anit-semite by people all to eager to cast the first stone.

Anti-semitism
I have never understood anti-semitism - especially from professing Christians. An anti-semitic Christian, in addition to being deep in the sin of hatred, simply does not understand God's plan of salvation. God chose the Jews to bring forth His son to be the atonement for the sins of the world - mine, yours and Michael's, too. His plan was never for the Jews to rule the world, and the Jews who rejected Jesus were not looking for world dominion, they were looking for a king to deliver them from Roman rule. The Bible is full of prophecy concerning the Jews and Israel, and these prophecies are coming to fruition right in front of our eyes. I pray for those who won't see the truth.

On a political note, I believe it was Golda Meir who said something to this effect: "There will never be peace in the Middle East until the Palestinians love their children more than they hate the Jews." Amen.

Michael – this is a great article, thanks.

Carol has identified the salvation plan and it has nothing to do with “613 commandments”. Christians owe a debt to Jews, a debt of love because our list has been reduced to One commandment: “Love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart and all thy mind”. In our failing to achieve obedience to this one commandment, we turn to God himself to help us. God has provided the scriptures and his Son to help us through our failure – two distinct items of Jewish origin.

However, the question you raise is not what Christians and Jews have in common, but rather why the world hates Jews. This we can know from scripture – thanks to the Jews. The prince of this world, the one that masquerades as an angel of light, is jealous of the Jews because God loves them and they have the option to return to God. The darkness has no such option and stands condemned.

Yes, Michael, the poisonous, illogical hatred for the Jews is founded upon “green eyed envy”.

Are you trying to tell me that the Jewish lobby is not the second most powerful lobby in Washington? If so, why not back it up with a few facts rather than throwing out cute little phrases like "Towers of Tautology". And no, I'm not going to waste my time going to some freako website recommended by a mental midget like you.

Your sense of logic is truly dizzying.

You said: An ad hominum attack is an informal fallacy whereby the character of an arguer or opponent is called a defaming name so as to avoid dealing with the argument itself. For example, if I were to say: "You are a complete idiot" when addressing someone, I might rightfully be suspected of making an ad hominum attack. Any ensuing information that I may give after that could more easily be dismissed since I have neglected any semblance of respect for others.

I called him an idiot because he apparently can't read and understand the meaning of a very simple sentence. Seems perfectly appropriate, no? Also, his attacks on the Mearsheimer Walt paper were baseless and without substance. It was pure name-calling. That's why I called them ad hominum attacks.

You also said: "Additionally, an unstated assumption by Mr. Since I don't want to take over the world, I have not joined them!"

I made no such assumption. Could it be that the lobbying group is hijacking the US government and using it for it's own purposes. If you wanted to take over the world, wouldn't you start by getting in tight with the country with the largest military? Duh.

Anyway, you're convoluted sense of logic is getting in the way of you're understanding of my very simple point. My point is that, by using tricky rhetoric to obfuscate the inordinate influence of this small group of people, he's simply adding to the suspicions of those are inclined to be suspicious.

Why the world hates the Jews
I am an evangelical Christian who studies the Bible extensively--both Old and New Testaments. The world hates the Jews because the world is under the control of Satan. He knows that God chose to reveal Himself through the Jews--first through the written Word of God and then through the Living Word, Jesus the Messiah. Through His sacrifice on the Cross and His subsequent resurrection, He has broken the power of the devil and is even now redeeming a people for Himself out of the world.
The Jews are still central to God's plan of history. Satan somehow thinks that if he can kill them all, he can thwart God's plan. Scripture reveals that the Jews (and God's people in general) are the 'apple of His eye.' Those who hate the Jews and try to harm them are sticking a sharp stick into the eye of God!
Muslim theology also sheds some light onto this. The Quran has many anti-Semitic comments but the Hadiths even more. The Hadiths imply that the Muslims are expecting a 'messiah' too who will come and make the whole world Muslim. Devout Muslims can hasten his return by killing Jews! It is not Israel, the land, the Temple Mount or anything else that they really care about. They believe that they hasten the return of their messiah just by killing Jews. The Messiah will indeed return one day but there will be a problem for those who believe the Hadith's teachings. One of the Messiah's favorite hames is 'The Holy One of Israel!!'
Also, for those who think that the New Testament is anti-semitic, I would say, 'Read it and decide for yourself.' Saying that it is anti-semtic makes about as much sense as saying that the minutes of a fractitious synagogue board meeting are anti-semitic. The entire Bible was written by Jews--except for Dr. Luke. Besides, those who say that probably haven't read the Old Testament either!! God hates false religiosity and points it out everywhere He sees it. If He bodily came to the USA today, He would find much that needs correction in our midst too.

Though it's already been said,
this is one of Medved's best columns (anyone know of a better - I'd like to read it). And this column has inspired some great posts. I understand why Kev Mac's Pedophile column was a hit(250 and some odd posts), but this column deserves to be just as talked about.

Mr Medved claims that according to Jewish tradition the Jews were the chosen people in the sense that they were chosen to accept special responsibilities, not special privileges. He may be right in saying that this is the modern interpretation of the term chosen people but that is very far from its original meaning.

The term chosen people is only a meaningless partial phrase. The full original phrase is "Chosen people of the God Jehovah(Yahweh)". It simply meant that while other peoples surrounding Judah were the chosen people of their national gods, the people of Judah (and by extension Israel) were chosen to serve Jehovah(Yahweh).

The Philstines were chosen to serve Dagon. The Canaanites were chosen to serve El (later called Ba'El). The Ammonites were the chosen people of the god Molech and so on.

It would be useful for members of all religious communities to have some understanding of what concepts actually existed at the time of the founding of their religions. Christianity and Judaism have evolved to a point that they have almost no relevence to their founding principles and concepts.

Restatement of my original statement.
I regret that I have to re-post my original post because it has been so distorted by rightwing ideologues.

Phylo Se Fizer writes: "Are you trying to tell me that the Jewish lobby is not the second most powerful lobby in Washington?"

So what if it is? By your logic, the most powerful lobby - the AARP - is in complete control of the federal government. Perhaps that explains why Castro has reached such a ripe old age: the AARP and it's "amen corner" in Congress has ensured that their Neo-Elderly minions in the State Department called off our Black Ops efforts to kill ol' Fidel. I guess they're waiting for him to cash in his bonus senior citizen points or some such thing.

Phylo: If so, why not back it up with a few facts rather than throwing out cute little phrases like "Towers of Tautology". And no, I'm not going to waste my time going to some freako website recommended by a mental midget like you."

Actually, the phrase was "Twins of Tautology" not "Towers of Tautology." Perhaps this was a Freudian slip? (He was a JEW, dontcha know.)Perhaps you were thinking "Twin Towers" and how the Mossad was the actual culprit because everyone knows (at least all attentive liberals do) that all the Jews who were employed at the WTC mysteriously called in sick that day. Right?

And what's with the "mental midget" remark? It does bring back memories...I haven't heard that one since fifth grade.

By now your words have created an indelible image of Joe Pesci - in his Goodfellas incarnation as the psychotic Tommy - playing your part here at Townhall.

"Waddya mean tautalogical? Tautalogical like how? How am I tautological?"

"I don't know...you're just...using circular reasoning."

"Oh, you mean like I'm running around in circles like a f***kin' dog chasing it's tail? Is THAT what you mean?"

"No, man, I mean that..."

"What, WHAT do you mean? What the f**k do you mean when you call me tautological? And what is this with twins? Do I look like a circus freak to you? What am I, am I here to f**kin' amoose you? What the F**K is so tautological about me? Huh? Tell me...tell what's so tautological..."

Sorry. I couldn't resist. Problem is, from this point on, everytime I read anything you write I will hear Joe Pesci saying it.

Phylo: C'mon nemo impress me. Prove that mearshiemer and Walt are wrong. I dare you. And yes I did read the paper.

The question is: have you had sex with it yet?

Phylo: You? Or just the critics reviews of it?

No, I haven't had sex with it. But I did read it...TWICE, just to make sure I was reading what I thought I was reading. And yes, I have also read reviews of the article, both pro and con and yes, the reviewers all lined up in predictable partisan formation.

The W-M Paper addresses several other issues in addition to AIPAC, such as the Persian Gulf War, Syria, Iran, etc. But let's focus on their assessment of the Big, Bad, JEW Lobby.

In the course of aiming most of their fire at AIPAC Walt and Mearsheimer manage to avoid telltale phrases, but the underlying arguments betray the same logic.

For instance, the authors succumb to claiming that “AIPAC, a de facto agent for a foreign government, has a stranglehold on Congress.”

The Congress, in other words, is Israeli-controlled territory. The neo-Nazis have coined a slogan for this charge: they call Congress part of the Zionist Occupation Government, or ZOG. Evidence of the authors’ political bedfellows is the ringing endorsement of the W-M paper by Ku Klux Klansman David Duke who called it “vindication.”

The authors decry AIPAC’s power but acknowledge that what AIPAC does, is perfectly legitimate:

“The US form of government offers activists many ways of influencing the policy process. Interest groups can lobby elected representatives and members of the executive branch, make campaign contributions, vote in elections, try to mould public opinion etc. They enjoy a disproportionate amount of influence when they are committed to an issue to which the bulk of the population is indifferent. Policymakers will tend to accommodate those who care about the issue, even if their numbers are small, confident that the rest of the population will not penalize them for doing so.

“In its basic operations, the Israel Lobby is no different from the farm lobby, steel or textile workers’ unions, or other ethnic lobbies. There is nothing improper about American Jews and their Christian allies attempting to sway US policy. The Lobby’s activities are not a conspiracy of the sort depicted in tracts like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. For the most part, the individuals and groups that comprise it are only doing what other special interest groups do, but doing it very much better. By contrast, pro-Arab interest groups, in so far as they exist at all, are weak, which makes the Israel Lobby’s task even easier.”

Of course, the authors denounce anti-Semitism, attempting to innoculate themselves from accusations that they harbor such views by arguing that all critics of Israel have to face such charges. That argument is ludicrous.

Israel’s media is dominated by critics of Israeli policies in the territories, who have been political foes of every Likud-run government in the last quarter century.

The authors themselves often rely on criticism coming from Israelis and within the Israeli government to disparage Israel. Israeli policies are routinely savaged in the Israeli media. No less a foe of Israel than Ali Abunimah, the creator of the electronic Intifada website, has stated that the Israeli press frequently publishes articles very critical of Israeli policies, including his own articles.

It is indeed odd that the authors don’t at least acknowledge one of the many contradictions within their paper: Israel is demonized at every turn, yet it is the only nation in the entire region that allows such criticism to come from within the government and from its own citizens (including Israeli Arabs). No other government or nation that surrounds it would allow such freedom to criticize the regime.

Walt and Mearsheimer know that Arab newspapers and major media rarely publish articles critical of their own governments, or of the Palestinians, given both the physical and legal risks for doing so.

The authors argue that AIPAC has been little more than a Likud Party mouthpiece. This charge is also ridiculous, and if either of them had ever deigned to attend an AIPAC policy conference, they would be well aware of the vigorous policy debate that always goes on, and the range of views on Middle East policy that are represented within the organization, whether the topic be Iraq, Iran, the peace process or the territories.

Moreover, recent Gallup surveys indicate that American support for Israel is at near record levels.

It is not AIPAC, nor the pro-Israel lobby that has made most Americans wary of Islamic radicalism and terror supporting states. It was not an Israeli student who attempted to mass murder students at the University of North Carolina by running them over nor an Israeli who went gunning for Jews in Seattle just recently.

Americans saw the Palestinians partying in Ramallah celebrating the attacks on 9/11, and the same death cult worship of martyrdom with every successful terror attack against Israel. If the Congress is pro-Israel, it is because Americans are pro-Israel.

If Americans are unsympathetic to the Palestinian cause, it is because they regard it as self -destructive for always choosing the path of violence over constructive negotiations, and are uncomfortable with its celebration of anti-Americanism.

Perhaps the American public is more aware of the facts than Walt and Mearsheimer:

Fact: Muslims are committing terror in the Sudan, in India, In England, in Nigeria, in Somalia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, France, Algeria, Morocco, Russia…need we continue? These countries will never be mistaken for supporters of Israel.

Fact: America has supported Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo and protected them from genocide, has liberated millions of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, has provided vast material support to Muslims suffering from natural disasters (the tsunami, the Pakistan earthquake), and has worked to support the founding of a Palestinian state.

The crux of the problem is not American support for Israel. The crux of the problem is that the Muslim world is beset by a variety of divisions and conflicts that have nothing to do with the Palestinians. The Arab world is deeply dysfunctional and a clash of civilizations does seem to be occurring.

Another item Walt and Mearsheimer pass over: the ideological symbol for the extremists in the Arab World is Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian writer who attended a small college in Colorado in the 1950s. He came back from his American sojourn with a vile hatred of the West and America in particular. Gender equality (relative to the Arab world), capitalism, free speech, consumerism, American culture – all were facets of America he hated. His view was that America must be destroyed for what it was, not for what it did.

America was not a strong supporter of Israel during the 1950s: the Israeli Air Force flew French fighters because America would not supply it. He was executed for treason by the Egyptian dictator Nasser in 1966, but his views have lived on with even greater power. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian doctor jailed for his role in the murder of Sadat, is an ideological heir of Qutb, as is his partner-in-terror, Osama Bin Laden.

If the Arab world cared so much for the plight of the Palestinians, why have they all (except for Jordan) denied them rights to citizenship? Or the right to own property?

Why did Kuwait force 300,000 Palestinians out of their nation after Saddam’s army was forced out of their nation in the first Gulf War in 1991?

Why are Filipinos and Indians given hundreds of thousands of jobs in the Gulf nations while Palestinians languish in camps?

Indeed, why do Arab nations continue to keep them penned up in refugee camps instead of resettling them (as Israel re-settled the 600,000 Jews forced out of Arab lands after the founding of Israel in 1948)?

Why do Arab nations routinely fail to deliver on their pledges of aid to the Palestinians – except for money meant to support the killing of Israelis?

That last point gives a clue: the Arab nations prefer to keep Palestinians impoverished and radicalized – all the better to destroy Israel.

Walt and Mearscheimer very conveniently ignore these very inconvenient facts. In doing so, they have violated the core principles of academic scholarship, which demand that facts be portrayed in an objective, non-biased manner.

The W-M Paper is a hatchet job, with the hatchet falling on Israel and American Jews.

There you go, Tommy..uh...Phylo.

In Love With Being Hated
The almost orgyistic impulse towards highlighting how hated Jews are is peculiar. Bring up the Kindertransport http://www.kindertransport.org/history.html
with a Jew who feels as Michael does and it's likely you'll be answered with King Ferdinand's purges of 1480 or some such. I must say though as a non-Jew who socializes almost entirely with other non-Jews, I rarely if ever hear discussions of Jews...most goyem I would venture pay little or no attention to the comings and goings of Israel on a repetative basis or to working themselves into a lather over Jewish influence and power. As hated as Medved would like Jews to appear to be, Jewry's outstanding and established success (even a Jewish British Prime Minister, albeit a converted Christian one) does surely counter this idea that there is ubiquitous and worldwide hatred of Jews. Israel has managed to be remarkably astute in gaining the largesse of American foreign aid in spite of so much alleged hatred, and nation's such as Britain, with historical enmity towards the Zionist state can note a doubling of weapons systems sales over this past year to Tel Aviv. The Holocaust is universally recognised as being a crime perpetrated against Jews, despite an almost equal number of gentiles being slaughtered in the same camps using the same methods as were employed upon Jews. Holocaust denial is, let's be honest correctly viewed as the purview of the lunatic. Perhaps Michael might have been a little more honest in titling his article "Why Antisemites Hate Jews." The "world?." Gimme a break. The obsession with being despised is not just unhealthy, it is spurious, trite and empty.

Re: In Love With Being Hated
Shannon Cream writes: "The almost orgyistic impulse towards highlighting how hated Jews are is peculiar."

Not at all - at least not to anyone with a knowledge of world history that transcends the 12th grade. However, your words have a familiar tone.

Shannon Cream: "Bring up the Kindertransport with a Jew who feels as Michael does and it's likely you'll be answered with King Ferdinand's purges of 1480 or some such.

"Or some such..." Shannon said with a sniff and a dismissive wave of an alabaster hand. Priceless. Do go on.

Shannon: "I must say though as a non-Jew who socializes almost entirely with other non-Jews, I rarely if ever hear discussions of Jews..."

No talk about the current goings-on in Israel? No chit-chat about the rising tensions in the Middle East as the Arab world prepares for what it thinks will be the final kill? No parsiflage regarding the killings in Seattle or any of the multitudinous assaults on Jews around the world on the part of deranged Jihadists? Nothing of that sort, eh? Perhaps the languid afternoon hours are whiled away in protracted and tendentious debate over the latest re-runs of "Are You Being Served?", interrupted only by a gentle request of the hostess for more tea and cucumber sandwiches. Indeed.

Shannon: "...most goyem I would venture pay little or no attention to the comings and goings of Israel on a repetative basis or to working themselves into a lather over Jewish influence and power."

And you even tossed in a smattering of Yiddish, just to show how "hip" and "with it" you really are. I LOVE it.

Shannon: "As hated as Medved would like Jews to appear to be, Jewry's outstanding and established success (even a Jewish British Prime Minister, albeit a converted Christian one) does surely counter this idea that there is ubiquitous and worldwide hatred of Jews."

Alas, it does not - at least not to anyone who has ventured outside the vine-covered walls of the country estate or ambled beyond the "Members Only" sign that designates the entrance to the Sanctum Sanctorum of the nearby fox hunting club.

Perhaps if you put down the badminton racquet or set aside the croquet mallet and cracked open a book - you know, one of those leather bound things that fill the shelves in the room you call a "library" to which you retire after supper for a smooth, smoky, aged cognac or perhaps, a fruity, fragrant tawny Port - and brushed up on the past two thousand years of world history that you apparently have ignored, you might, just might, get an inkling of what Medved is writing about.

Shannon: "Israel has managed to be remarkably astute in gaining the largesse of American foreign aid in spite of so much alleged hatred, and nation's such as Britain, with historical enmity towards the Zionist state can note a doubling of weapons systems sales over this past year to Tel Aviv."

Them bloody JEWS sure is a crafty lot, ain't they, Guv'nuh?

Shannon: "The Holocaust is universally recognised as being a crime perpetrated against Jews, despite an almost equal number of gentiles being slaughtered in the same camps using the same methods as were employed upon Jews."

You are a master of the obvious. Perhaps your mastery is based on the fact that the Holocaust was, in fact, directed primarily against the Jews. Read "Mein Kampf." You'll find it on the second shelf, at the far left, next to the tome titled "My Greatest Diplomatic Achievements" by Neville Chamberlain.

Shannon: "Holocaust denial is, let's be honest correctly viewed as the purview of the lunatic."

How gracious of you to say so, m'lord (or is it m'lady?)

Shannon: "Perhaps Michael might have been a little more honest in titling his article "Why Antisemites Hate Jews." The "world?." Gimme a break. The obsession with being despised is not just unhealthy, it is spurious, trite and empty."

Much like you. Much like your airy, vacuous, mentally masturbatory prose. Speaking of which: what the hell kind of screenname is "Shannon Cream"? Sounds like a porn starlet.

Perhaps you might have been a bit more honest and stated from the onset that you, in fact, give quite a bit of thought to the matter of Jews in the world today and have reached the conclusion - as you finish the last drop of your nightcap - that you aren't all that fond of them.

Ta-ta.

To Nemoparticularis: You didn't refute any of ShannonCream's points, except for the fact the holocaust was directed primarily against Jewry. You seem to resort to character assassination, which is the last resort in an argument. Why don't you just spit "Anti-Semite!" at her, or better yet, "Heretic!"

Thanks to Medved for a well-written essay, but the facts remain:

1.Israel gets the lion's share of U.S. foreign aid ($5 billion a year) which Israel then uses to fund their interests in the U.S. political system.

2. AIPAC really IS the second most powerful lobby in our country (the AARP isn't trying to help a foreign country or change our culture)

3. Jewish interests control what we see or DON'T see on television, in newspapers, on the radio, what is portrayed in movies, etc. Go to www.jewwatch.com if you want the particulars.

4. Organizations that work to create and enforce legislature to change our culture from the Anglo-Saxon Christian one (prior to 1960's) to our multicultural nightmare of today, 9such as the Ford Foundation, MALDEF, ADL, SPLC) etc., are either run or funded by, Jews.

5. Anyone who points this out is immediately branded an "Anti-Semite", the 21st century equivalent of "heretic".

A Culture That Produces Wealth
Andy, I too read Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" and his "middlemen minorities" theory and found it, like the rest of the book, very enlightening. I recommend it to everyone.

I think that Medved's #2 reason is the most important. The Jewish culture has always embraced values that, when followed, promotes wealth and prosperity. Having long been a people without a home, they settled in other countries and began to produce wealth by thrift, industry, personal discipline, and social cohesiveness. Many of the cultures of countries in which Jews settled did not have similar values and as a result did not produce as much wealth. This led to jealousy of Jewish productivity and a suspicion that they gained their wealth by ripping other people off. You see this today. Israel took a small piece of useless desert and produced a thriving economy, while the Arabs around them remained poor. I've heard Palestinians and other Arabs accuse Israel of keeping them down and getting rich off of them. It's not the Jews, it's their culture. It's their socialist and fascist governments. It's their refusal to change culturally to meet the challenge of the educational and economic demands of the 21st century. But, like the class-baiters in our country, they blame the producers for their productivity instead of learning from them how to improve their own.

misleading info
It's rather subjective to say the jewish lobby is the second most powerful and aarp is the most powerful. if the writer believes that then disregard everything he or she says after that. the aarp at one time was a lobby, but now it is an appendage to the democrat party, and is mostly interested in selling insurance and other products to the boomers. if you think aarp has any power why do social security recipients pay income tax on up to 85% of their benefits. in the early 80's congress starting taxing seniors, and in the 90's clinton added a senior marital tax. most seniors joined aarp to get a hotel discount, and it morphed into a political party marketing tool. as to how powerful the jewish lobby is you can probably match it against the military industrial complex, and because they are both multi-faceted operations going under many different names just accept they are both very powerful. james madison said that whoever controlled public opinion controlled america. jewish domination in all media fields is noteworthy. and why not? america has a capitalist economic system and if you want to start your own newspaper, movie studio, music studio, tv or radio station go for it. medved didn't say in this article, however, on one of his shows he did say the source of jewish power is that jews are family. if you think about it that explains a lot. jews are tribal and exhibit the characteristics of a small, minority group. a minority group could feel helpless and victimized, and act ashamed of their perceived status, or they can take on a superior attitude, develop a special code or ritual that only members of the group will know or limit membership through specific ancestory. even say you are the chosen people regardless of what that really means. the impact of that is really on the person hearing that, and that person interprets it the way it sounds to them. just as members of the old est movement had visual clues as to their membership, if i met a jew i'm sure i wouldn't give off the key clue that i was a jew, and therefore i was not one of the chosen ones. in the english language being chosen generally has a good connotation. if i met a christian and it was evident i wasn't born again they would smile, and think i'm going to burn in hell. if i met a mohamedite they would see me as an infidel and all that implies. so, it would seem that the majority of people i meet at some point in the day might see me as inferior if i don't give off the right group identity clues. back to medved's tip about jews being family it explains that there isn't a jewish conspiracy per se, but rather an elabortate system of nepotism. the movie studio doesn't need to be owned by a jew anymore, as long as the ceo is jewish the producers will predominantly be jewish, and they will hire jewish directors and writers, and they will select jewish actors, and so on. with the dribble that comes out of hollywood you don't really think jews are better writers or actors did you? a question i have for michael medved is with the influence of movies, tv, and music why does the jewish dominated industry put out such crap? america has become rude, crude, and becoming degerate, and that is the picture the media shoves down our throat. every family is dysfunctional, fathers are pretty much useless, using drugs is normal, murder and violence are tolerated and encouraged, etc. - you can fill in the gaps. christians are generally depraved, degerate and amoral. david letterman is anti-christian and millions of sheep laugh at his jokes and he hates them. he routinely uses christ as a curse word, as is prevalent in movies and tv. why doesn't hollywood use their influence for the betterment of society? the story line can stay the same. take the movie sideways for example. why did the lead character have to have anal intercourse with the woman he met. anal intercourse is the primary sexually transmitted method to get hiv. that's why the highest incidence of sexually transmitted aids among gay men and african americans. the woman could have said to not do that as she didn't want aids and it would have been educational and the story would still be the same.

The Real Reason Islam and the World Hate Jews

Great exposition, Michael.

Hitler sent agents to Palestine to try to oust the Jews.

Hitler refused to surrender, spending all he could spare to continue the slaughter of Jews. Not even the bombing of Cologne could sway him from his Jew killing goal. He wanted to do al he could to prevent the return of the Jews to their homeland.

The establishment of the Bible codes in the Torah, the first five books of the Bible, as scientific fact, via a computer experiment by Witztum, Rips, and Rosenberg, published in Statistical Science, uncovering unerring predictions of future events each and every time quizzed, confirms God as the author, through Jewish scribes or prophets, of the Torah and, as recent experiments have shown, other books of the Bible, including Isaiah. An infantile refutation of the codes was published by McKay and others in 1999, also in Statistical Science, that failed to show answers to every query without fail, or to replicate the Witztum results to show that they could be found in any sufficiently long Hebrew test. So much for integrity of the politically correct journals of science.

Similar predictions can be found in the Hebrew language version of War and
Peace and Moby Dick. The difference is that each and every time the Torah transcript, derived from a 1006 AD manuscript, was queried about the names and dates of birth of those prominent Jews with the longest entries in a Jewish encyclopedia who lived roughly between 700 and 1800 AD, those names were found along with their dates of birth and death.

One may ask why cannot we get answers to our inquiries each and every time Moby Dick or War and Peace are quizzed.

The point here is that since the existence of the codes validates the Torah, and every word recited therein, as the word of God, we may be assured of the truth of the predictions of its surface text. [Some find the Genesis creation story bunk. But it seems the speed of light has been slower every time it has been measured since 1676. But then there was the threat of the big bang theory that emerged about 1930 and its implications for evolution. So physics stopped publishing experimental measurements of the speed of light and declared it a constant. Nevertheless, extrapolation of the data points back in time leads to an estimate of the time of creation, when the speed of light was infinite, in agreement more or less with Bishop Usher’s 1600s Bible derived calculation of 4004 BC.]

We do not have such incontrovertible proof for the truth of other parts of the
Old Testament other than the Torah, nor of the New Testament, and particularly Revelation. Yet there are strong grounds to believe them to be equally the word of God. The point is many people believe them to be the word of God, true or not, in particular, Muslims and evangelicals and, from his actions, Hitler. And according to the Bible, the reoccupation by the Jews of Jerusalem is the key event that starts the countdown to Armageddon and the end of Lucifer’s reign over earth. Therefore, if Lucifer’s agents can prevent that, his reign continues. Now surely radical Islam, like Nazism, has proven itself a religion right from hell. And both with the same purpose: the ousting or ending of a Jewish state in Palestine so as to prevent reoccupation of Jerusalem and building of a new temple; and the death of every last Jew to end future threats.
All this need not be true, only that Hitler and the radical Islamic leaders, the Henry Fords and others, believe it to be true, to explain the world’s hatred of Jews. In fact, nothing else makes anywhere near as much sense.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. The object of posting one's comments is that they get read. Here's a hint that will ensure that visitors to TownHall actually READ what you wrote: Use proper punctuation and grammatical style. Separate individual thoughts and subject matter into paragraphs. Sources of AntiSemitism
It’s almost impossible to discusss this subject in calm tones and rational terms, but I’ll give it a try. Michael is right as far as he goes, but he omits one factor in the origins of anti-semitism. Unfortunately, the omission of that single factor distorts the discussion and makes it as much a diversion as an enlightenment. The undiscussed factor is simply Jewish anti-Gentilism (in particular, Jewish anti-Christianity). Let it be said at the outset that anti-Gentilism is a strain of thinking, an attitudinal outlook within Jewish tradition that affects individual Jews to different degrees. Some reject it outright, others harbor it, while still others honor and cultivate it, but it is very old, runs deep, and is still strongly influential in zionism. Like any prejudice, it inevitably produces a mirror-image of itself in the people it denigrates: those who are rejected will reject their rejectors. That’s just human psychology, and has nothing to do with Jews being successful, or envied, or “chosen,” or anything else. If that factor isn’t factored into the picture, then antisemitism will just appear baffling, mysterious, and inexplicable – as it apparently does to many people.

For those inclined to cry “antisemitism” in response to the above, let me put a stopper in that bottle right now. The previous paragraph is simply a summary of the conclusions reached by Israel Shahak in his landmark book Jewish History, Jewish Religion – the Weight of Three Thousand Years. Shahak, a Holocaust survivor (Belsen Camp) and immigrant to Israel before it was a nation, became professor of organic chemistry at Hebrew University, and a long-time human-rights activist. A Semite of Semites, Shahak is a scholar who knows his history, knows his Talmud and knows the Jewish community inside and out. And if you want to think I have mis-characterized his position, here are some of his own words:

“Judaism is imbued with a very deep hatred towards Christianity, combined with ignorance about it. This attitude was clearly aggravated by the Christian persecutions of Jews, but is largely independent of them. In fact, it dates from the time when Christianity was still weak and persecuted (not least by Jews) and it was shared by Jews who had never beeen persecuted by Christians or who were even helped by them . . . The persistent attitudes of classiical Judaism toward non-Jews strongly influences its followers, Orthodox Jews and those who can be regarded as its continuators, zionists. Through the latter, it also influences the policies of the State of Israel . . . many people at present do not realize where zionism is tending: to a combination of all the old hates of classical Judaism toward Gentiles, and to the indiscriminate and ahistorical use of all the persecutions of Jews throughout history in order to justify the zionist persecution of the Palestinians.” Shahak wrote those words in 1994. Twelve years later, the “tendency” he spoke of is bearing exactly the fruit he expected of it. If you want to know what lies ahead for Israel, read the rest of his book.

Re: Rtommer
rtommer writes: "You didn't refute any of ShannonCream's points, except for the fact the holocaust was directed primarily against Jewry."

There were no other points worth the time and effort to refute - unless you count the usual (and, in Shannon's case, cleverly subdued) anti-Semitic drivil.

Rtommer: "You seem to resort to character assassination, which is the last resort in an argument. Why don't you just spit "Anti-Semite!" at her, or better yet, "Heretic!"

Shannon opted for the high-brow, upper-crust, "intellectual" approach to Jew-hating. I figured I'd go with the flow and nail him/her/it whenever an opportunity arose. And it frequently did.

Rtommer: Thanks to Medved for a well-written essay, but...

And you do have a big but...

Rtommer: "the facts remain: Israel gets the lion's share of U.S. foreign aid ($5 billion a year) which Israel then uses to fund their interests in the U.S. political system."

Proof? Ah....you have none. Only suspicion and, as we all know, suspicion often creates what it suspects.

Rtommer: "AIPAC really IS the second most powerful lobby in our country (the AARP isn't trying to help a foreign country or change our culture"

Nice attempt to anticipate a counterattack, but to no avail. The fact that it is the second most powerful lobby amounts to nothing, especially in light of the fact that most Americans support the cause of Israel against her enemies if only for the reason that her enemies are OUR enemies and were our enemies long before Israel ever existed.

Rtommer: "Jewish interests control what we see or DON'T see on television, in newspapers, on the radio, what is portrayed in movies, etc. Go to www.jewwatch.com if you want the particulars."

With that you grabbed the bait, set the hook and headed straight for the surface. Works like a charm every time. Hell, I ought to have my own fishing show: Catching the Big Ones with Capt. Nemo...how to land your own prize-winning Jew-hater with just one cast of the fishing reel.

Rtommer: "Organizations that work to create and enforce legislature to change our culture from the Anglo-Saxon Christian one (prior to 1960's) to our multicultural nightmare of today, 9such as the Ford Foundation, MALDEF, ADL, SPLC) etc., are either run or funded by, Jews."

You are clueless when it comes the cultural chasm that even divides Jews themselves, with the conservatives on one side and the liberals (ostensibly, the one to who you are referring) on the other. Moron that you are, you failed to realize that "liberal" Jews are, for the most part, secular humanists who are Jews in name only. Like I said...works like a charm.

Rtommer: "Anyone who points this out is immediately branded an "Anti-Semite", the 21st century equivalent of "heretic"."

A spade is a spade. In your case, an ignoramus is an Rtommer. Whatever the case, I forgive you. Now for your penance, please sing two choruses of Hava Nagila, dance the Hora, and then wash and wax Pat Buchanan's Lincoln Towncar.

OttoZeit writes: "It’s almost impossible to discusss this subject in calm tones and rational terms, but I’ll give it a try."

And you did very well, Otto. Actually, you made an excellent point, one that has come up in many lengthy conversations I've had with Jewish friends. They, too, admit that they have had to bottle up and suppress the bigotry toward Gentiles in general and Christians in particular, with which they have been raised. The sword does, indeed, cut both ways, and you are to be commended for pointing this out in your thoughtful and well-written post.

Nevertheless, sincere, like-minded Christians and Jews have found ways to overcome these prejudices and bigotries and have forged an ever closer alliance in our stand against a common Islamic enemy. Thankfully, we have taken the time to engage in conversation and express ourselves honestly, with no subterfuge or hidden agenda.

The result is wonderful: we acknowledge our differences, but accentuate our commonalities: a reverence for tradition, a firm belief in a provident God and a shared set of moral and political values. THAT is how Jews and Christians are able to get along.

Note, though, that these alliances still run along the conservative vs liberal divide: conservative Jews have far more in common with conservative Christians than they do with their secular liberal brethren.

Likewise, liberal Jews have far more in common with Gentile secularists and liberal Christians than they do with their conservative brethren.

Re: A Culture That Produces Wealth
RedWhite&Blue writes: "Israel took a small piece of useless desert and produced a thriving economy, while the Arabs around them remained poor. I've heard Palestinians and other Arabs accuse Israel of keeping them down and getting rich off of them."

Perhaps this explains why Moonbat Democrats associate so strongly with their aggrieved Islamic brethren: both share a politico-economic philosophy based on envy and class-hatred. Well done.

From the beginning...
1.From the beginning (Cain and Abel for ex.) the sons of promise have been persecuted by the sons of the works. [But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.](Gal 4:29)

2.The Lord uses the wrath of the nations to chastise His people that they might turn to Him with their whole heart.

3.Satan hates those who have been entrusted with God's Word, be he Jew or Christian.

To Nemoparticularis: I'm not sure why people like yourself seem intent on fanning the flames in comments sections like this one...perhaps it's to create controversy for other reasons...? In any case, your reply to my comments illustrates something significant that's on topic:

Nemoparticularis: "With that you grabbed the bait, set the hook and headed straight for the surface. Works like a charm every time. Hell, I ought to have my own fishing show: Catching the Big Ones with Capt. Nemo...how to land your own prize-winning Jew-hater with just one cast of the fishing reel."

What bait? What surface? My points are my own. Refute them or don't. The fact you call me a "Jew-hater" illustrates my point of "heretic!" completely. You're a name-caller. I'm not a Jew-hater, I'm pointing out that Jews are influential and they've created an effective system for shutting out criticism.

You have good writing skills and a decent vocabulary. Do yourself a favor and Google "argument fallacies" and study the list. Your ad hominem attacks are tiresome, and this website deserves better.
