The Polarizing President

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Who has been the most polarizing new president of recent times? Richard Nixon? Ronald Reagan? George W. Bush?

No, that honor belongs to President Barack Obama. According to the Pew Research Center, the gap between Republican and Democratic approval ratings for Bush a few months into his first term was about 51 percentage points. For Obama, this partisan gap stands at 61 points. Obama has been a unifier, of sorts. He has united Democrats and united Republicans -- against each other.

The Pew report notes that this is the extension of a long-term trend. Decades ago, a majority of Democrats approved of Richard Nixon's job performance early in his first term. A majority of Republicans did the same for Jimmy Carter. But that has not been true for any president since.

Ron Brownstein, the author of "The Second Civil War," cites a variety of structural reasons for intensified division. There has been a "sorting-out" of the political parties, making each more ideologically uniform. Long, nasty presidential campaigns stoke our differences. Media outlets have become more partisan. Ideological interest groups have proliferated. Congressional leaders have changed the rules, making it easier to impose party discipline.

But Obama was supposed to be the antidote to the poison of partisanship. During the presidential campaign, chief strategist David Axelrod told Brownstein, "If there's an enhanced Democratic majority, I think that he's going ... to urge a special sense of responsibility to try and forge coalitions around these answers, not because we won't be able to force our will in many cases, but because, ultimately, effective governance requires it in the long term."

That makes last week's votes on the budget resolutions a landmark of ineffective governance. Not a single Republican in the House or Senate supported the bill, largely because the Democratic majority forced its will. Republicans were flattened, not consulted. Democratic leaders talk of enacting controversial elements of the budget through the reconciliation process -- which would require 51 Senate votes, not the normal 60, for passage. Only in Washington would the word "reconciliation" refer to a form of partisan warfare.

Without Republican input or influence, the budget is a tax-and-spend caricature. Obama has complained of inheriting a $1.3 trillion debt. According to economist Michael Boskin, Obama's proposals would add $6.5 trillion in debt over the next decade -- about $163,000 for every American taxpaying family.

I am not generally a deficit hawk. A government can run a responsible deficit in a growing economy -- and may have to run one to counteract an economic downturn. But Obama's proposed level of debt is irresponsible. It makes broad tax increases nearly inevitable. It expands our dependence on China, America's loan officer. And it creates pressure for the government to purchase or monetize debt, leading to inflation. No Republican, even of the moderate variety, could accept a budget that spends America into unsustainable debt by completely avoiding the setting of realistic priorities. And none in Congress did.

There is an argument in favor of political polarization. Franklin Roosevelt and Reagan, in their time, were polarizing presidents precisely because they were ambitious presidents. They believed that some national goals were worth the sacrifice of amity. A decisive leader is sometimes a divisive leader.

But Obama's polarizing approach challenges and changes the core of his political identity. His moderate manner and message appealed to a country weary of division and ambition -- a nation now asked to endure another round of both. But Obama's domestic agenda is also resoundingly typical -- as though he were some conventionally liberal backbench senator suddenly thrust into immense influence. Which, of course, he is.

It would have been relatively easy for President Obama to divide the Republican coalition, peeling off less-partisan Republicans with genuine outreach. Many Republicans were prepared to accept short-term deficits to stimulate the economy in exchange for long-term fiscal responsibility. Obama could have focused more narrowly on resolving the financial crisis -- the key to all economic recovery -- and delayed his ambitions on other issues to a more realistic time. In the process, he might have gotten some Republicans to share his political risks, instead of nursing grievances on the sidelines.

Polarization in American politics has its own disturbing momentum, aided by some strident Republican voices. But that does not require a president to make it worse. And it is a sad, unnecessary shame that Barack Obama, the candidate of unity, has so quickly become another source of division.

Bush ran roughshod
Bush ran roughshod for the longest time until the public through out the GOP majorities. Bush was polarizing to the enth degree!

Freedom is polarizing ...

Mr. Obama is advocating a subjugation of the individual to the group. His deeds are at striking variance with "His moderate manner and message".

Mr. Gerson's illusions are not helpful.

Al@12:20 AM EST
Your abuse of the English language is appalling, even worse the the usual liberal.

Under 40, right? Public education now is the worst I've ever seen.

Deficits
"A government can run a responsible deficit in a growing economy -- and may have to run one to counteract an economic downturn. " Well Mr. Gerson, the U.S. Congress has run a deficit for the past 50 years. When are they going to be responsible and have a surplus. Imagine what your finances would be like if every year you spent way more than you brought in. Pelosi and company had a fit when AIG ran a $20 billion deficit per month. However, this Congress will run a deficit of over $140 billion per month. Talk about irresponsible.

Moderate?
Mr. Gerson, I take issue with your characterizations of Barack Obama. There is nothing "moderate" nor "conventionally liberal" about him. He is undermining everything that has made this country great. Just look at his words and actions in Europe. Americans must be very cautious about bending over to retrieve a dropped bar of soap. I wish Obama would have success "peeling off less-partisan Republicans." The sooner the RINOs and CINOs lose their stranglehold on the Republican Party, the better.

You can play the stoic, pragmatic moderate all you want, Mr. Gerson. This country's going down in flames, and all you can focus on is "ineffective governance." I don't think you're dealing with core issues.

Give me a political party that categorically excludes the likes of Spectre, Collins, and Snowe--and, apparently, Gerson.

communistic Øbama
Øbama is a communist leader and needs to be impeached or tried for treason, as he is destroying our country faster than a speeding bullet

I am actually thankful
that Obama, Pelosi and Reid have fostered such polarization. Their policies are so sharply in contrast with the principles that make America great that voters will soon see beyond the Messiah's rhetoric and Michelle's buff arms.

They are overplaying their political hand in an effort to grab intractable power before the charisma wears off. The only question is whether the pain of O's policies are realized before the economy recovers. If so, Republicans emerge in 2010; If not, we are in for a lost generation or more.

There is a solution . . .
to the polarization situation. Since those of us in the central part of the US only count when votes are needed and cling to our God and guns, lets skew the demographics in our favor. Since acorn (and others) skewed the voter registration process, let's use the left's (acorn's) tactics against them. When you fill out your census forms or are interviewed by the acorn census representative, LIE. Increase the number of people living in your household by 5 or 6. This will assure that the apportioning process increases the number of representatives in your state.
With criminals like rahm emanual, turbotax timmie geithner and dr. sibelius running the show, it is time to exact some payback.
Remember, LIE to increase your demographics.

The Indigent Presidency
The lowest of the food chain is sitting in our oval office. His presence stinks of foreign blood. Will we allow this albatross to win? Our tax payers need to stop working,,,,each and every business needs to force workers home for one week...this will bring the fed to it's knees.......cripple it. Then, we the people will be back in the driver's seat. Is this so hard to understand? Have we really become a nation of sheeple? Let's fight fire with fire, people! A loss of one week's salary is less than losing what barry the usurper has in mind for us.

AH
It's true - public education stinks. The student has to be a genius to learn anything at all, because he has to teach himself.

Ah, memories.

De-mob-ocracy
The most polarizing trend is our degeneration from a limited-government republic to a "wonderful" democracy. Now, 499 sheep are forced to vote with 501 wolves on what to have for dinner, and those on both sides have to argue with each other on issues which should be decided at the individual level.

The best answer I have seen on the internet is, "I want a divorce." Just divide the assets, liabilities, and ideologies between the two groups and split.

Mr. Gerson,

take off your rose-colored glasses. Obama has not only thumbed his nose at political bi-partisanship. He has also decided to make the Catholic Church a target.

His agenda is the destruction of America with the idea that he will re-construct an America that emphasizes government control over individual liberty.

He knows the Catholic Church is an even greater impediment to his agenda than is the GOP. He has them (the GOP)pretty well neutered. He knows the Catholic Church is his true rival.

The Real Obama has stood up.
Obama the elected official has emerged from Obama the candidate. The candiate's mouth is still running to sell what the executive has signed. Obama's legislative record was never held against him. Supporters believed he could have changed from the man who served in Springfield and the Senate. What a nation of sheep we are to believe. The leopard didn't change his spots, he just removed the whitewash. Yes my fellow Americans we are stuck with a tax and spend liberal of the highest order; a self-serving individual who appoints tax cheats to high office; a narcissist who wrote two autobiograhpies before he accomplished anything.

"Bipartisanship is another name
for date rape" at least according to Grover Norquist. Obama reached out his hand, and he got bitten. Why should he seek the cooperation of those who claim he's a communist, a Kenyan, the anti-christ, etc?

Obama slogan a lie
Obama said during his campaign that he wanted to change the way Washington did business and work past the partisanship so that both Republicans and Democrats would work together. He als said that he cross the aisle. Well, I believe him saying he would cross the aisle meant that he would reach over to Republicans, grab Republicans by their shirts, drag them over to the Democratic side and force his liberal agenda on them and us. He does not want to cross the aisle, that was only campaign rhetoric so that people would vote for him. Obama lied for his personal gain. Now, is that a surprise for any Democrat? Obama unfortunately lacks the moral integrity to actually stand by his campaign promises. Let's hope he does not cause the U.S. to go into bankruptcy, in order to further his far leftist agenda.

I am not quite buying that
Certainly Obama is polarizing some Republicans.
They are the types who post a lot on Town Hall
and listen to Rush Limbaugh everyday.

But if you talk to the average joe, and pay attention to non-partison polls, most people
really like Obama and think he is doing a
good job. Perhaps you need to add the
word "considering" there. But nevertheless,
it is a far cry better than what we had before
and I think that in itself is unifying.

Nobody is in love with our deficit. But people who have an ounce of sense and
charity know that the deficit had to be dealt
with. What is taking place now is not done
to save the butts of CEO's. It is taking place to save our society, not just our
financial situation, but our very lives and
sense of self-worth.

Al, you don't know
what you are talking about. After 9/11 the Far Left kept quiet for ten minutes. Shortly afterwards, I saw the Lefties, your pals, demonstrating against our going into Afghanistan. You guys are shameless and you do blame America first!

Tammy
Has everyone in Illinois had a lobotomy or are you just a test case.

Do Not Critize Dear Leader
As soon as you do the propeller head BDS crowd appears to defame and slam the critics. What'sa matter? Can't take critical response to the mess you voted in office like adults and admit that things are going very wrong? I didn't think so..... You know, you act like the boy who cried Wolf once too often. Pardon us if we don't take your BDS driven drivel seriously. Tha author used facts and logic, the antithesis to your crybaby response.

sjpatejak
to:

Because he is a communist, Kenyan and the Anti-Christ.

Randy
I have not had a frontal lobotomy, but Obama's policies certainly encourages me to keep a bottle in front of me.

TEXAS, TEXAS, TEXAS
Take heart, people. The answer to this mess is going to come out of TEXAS. I don't know how...but somebody or somebodies out of that great state is going to rescue our noble nation from those who would dismantle it. There is an abundance of smart, influential, powerful, and patriotic people in TEXAS. One or more of them will save us. I believe this strongly!

Polarization
Mr. Bush's first(and continuing)mistake in office was his attempt to conduct business in a bipartisan way as he was able to do with Democrats in Texas. He never caught on to the fact that the nationl-level Democrats were never going to cooperate with him and he got stabbed in the back with great regularity.

Obama, likewise ran on a pledge of bipartisanship, but never had any thought of actually trying it. He has an overwhelming majority in the House and a working majority in the Senate. So, he has no need to actually work with Republicans for most of his programs. That leaves him free to work against Republicans to increase Democratic power.

Unfortunately, all this drivel just leaves the country the worse for it.

Every President is Polarizing
In a two party system, every president will be polarizing. If your guy doesn't win, you hate the winner. Conservatives hate Obama, liberals love him. Like all presidental elections, 2012 will be decided by about 10% of voters who don't vote along party lines. Sure, over 10% of voters claim to be independent, but the majority of those voters are either liberal or concervative by nature and will end up towing the party line.

Let's start fresh
Here we are just a few months in the new administration and we are still trying to match up what he said during the campaign and what he and his henchmen are doing! He is a liar in word and deed.

Unity Still Defines Obama
First, his unique way of reaching out to one point five billion Muslims. Nothing could be more important than that, right now.

Second, his reaching out to the Persians, Iran. Barack is a big picture man.

Third, his bold assertion that we are not a Christian nation--excellent. And true. Christopher Hitchens I don't agree with on much, but he is right about the beliefs of Thomas Jefferson, the practices of George Washington and the mindset of Benjamin Franklin, a mindset shared by the majority of "believers" to this day.

I say this as a practicing Roman Catholic: We are not, thank God, a "Christian" country. When Hitchens argues that "God is not great" he hopes to save us all from, for example, Sharia Law! For that mindset, not mine, "God is great." That mindset worships idols, not the Almighty. There is a method to Obama's "madness."

Obama is an idiot
I wish this guy would just die

I'm One of Those
I said "Give Him a Chance" and although I DID NOT vote for him I actually did TRY to do so..It DID NOT WORK!! I thought he "had a bit of bad luck" in his early Cabinet placements..NOT SO..Time and again it became more obvious to me that we *Have a Newly MINTED 2nd LT on our hands* (with all due respects to all U soon-to-be Lts). Right now the only way I can describe my feeling is SCARED TO DEATH!! And that's not a state I usually find myself in..CHEERS

What About the Crooks?
The Democratic party is different. It is a patronage system in cahoots with organized crime. Is it any wonder that Hilary went from Mena to Mexico promoting her drug biz? People close to her and unions are maffia. The Daly and Kennedy machines are similar. And then there is Chuck Schumer. He seems to be behind the Stevens proecutorial misconduct and the bigget pork pie ever. The clintonistas carried wheelbarrows of cash out of Washington. The Obamites are directing billions to their friends throughbogus programs. People need to get a lot harsher in describing what is happening.
