Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Some friends who are loyal alumni of Notre Dame are distressed that God's alma mater is hosting a pro-choice president at commencement. For decades, they argue, Notre Dame has accommodated, legitimated and enabled pro-choice views, compromising its identity as a Catholic institution. They question the wisdom of the Obama invitation, which they believe adds to that confusion.

But some critics go further, calling President Obama's appearance "an outrage and a scandal." And that goes too far.

The office of the president has meaning and importance that transcend the views of its current occupant. Though elected by a part of America, the president becomes a symbol of its whole. The respect we accord him does not imply agreement or endorsement. It reflects our appreciation for constitutional processes. So a presidential visit is always an honor. The televised arrival of Air Force One, the motorcade, the playing of "Hail to the Chief," the audience standing as the president enters -- all these express a proper respect for democratic legitimacy.

If you cannot honor the man, then honor the office. If you cannot honor the office, then one more democratic bond has been severed.

But the controversy surrounding the Notre Dame invitation highlights growing strains in an important political relationship. In the last election, while evangelical Christians generally remained loyal to the Republican nominee, Catholics decisively shifted their votes toward Obama. In 2004, George W. Bush won the Catholic vote by five points. Obama carried it by nine points in 2008. A number of Catholic thinkers set out a "pro-life, pro-Obama" position -- disagreeing with Obama's pro-choice views but trusting in his moderate instincts and conciliatory temperament.

So far, Obama has done little to justify this faith. His initial actions on life issues -- funding overseas abortion providers, removing restrictions from federally funded medical experimentation on human embryos, revisiting conscience protections for pro-life health care professionals -- have ranged from conventional to radical. And this may be one reason why Obama's support among Catholics has eroded. According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of Americans who disapprove of Obama's job performance increased by nine points from February to March. Among Catholics as a whole, his disapproval rating jumped 14 points. And among white, non-Hispanic Catholics, the figure doubled -- from 20 percent to 41 percent.

Catholics are having second thoughts, but it could get much worse. If the president and Congress are not careful on several issues, these concerns could open a major rift between the Catholic Church and the Democratic Party.

First, Obama has raised deep concerns among Catholic leaders by signaling he will overturn Bush's executive order protecting health workers from firing and discrimination if they refuse to perform actions they consider morally objectionable. The administration claims the order was overbroad and unnecessary. But Catholic hospitals believe these protections are essential, because of pressure by states and private medical associations for Catholic health care providers to perform or refer for abortions. Catholic leaders want the president to be helpful, not neutral or hostile, in the protection of conscience.

Second, Catholic leaders fear that the Hyde Amendment -- which bans the use of Medicaid funds for abortion except in the rarest of cases -- could easily be reversed by the pro-choice congressional majority.

Third, health care reform will raise the largest debate -- whether abortion should be a covered service. As a candidate, Obama said his health proposal would include "reproductive health services." Planned Parenthood argues that "full reproductive health" must be covered. But any proposed federal entitlement to abortion-on-demand would be unprecedented, push Catholic leaders toward revolt, and possibly doom health care reform entirely.

Americans disagree strongly about the legality of abortion. But for decades there has been a rough consensus that no one should be compelled to participate in abortions or have their federal tax dollars used for abortion. These three changes would shatter that consensus, making the destruction of life an essential part of the medical and legal order while stigmatizing and marginalizing all who object. This would be an outrage and a scandal -- a troubling reinterpretation of religious liberty, which is not merely the freedom to believe, but the freedom to bring religiously informed moral beliefs to professional and political life.

Obama's Catholic supporters would feel betrayed and discredited -- and rightly so. The Catholic hierarchy and Catholic health professionals would feel assaulted by the president -- and they would be correct. And President Obama would not need to worry about future invitations from Notre Dame.

Martyrs and Cafeteria Catholics
Please, Catholics are not victims! We are the largest religious faith in the United States, for starters. Get off that soap box and the anti-Christmas soap box, too!

Cafeteria Catholics are sounding off after remaining silent when an illegal and IMMORAL war was declared by a TRUE BUFFOON, George the W. This is the person who executed countless people while Governor of Texas. But not a word about that. Cafeteria Catholics, shut up! You can't choose which "sins" you oppose. It is all or nothing. Pro-Life, Mick

Confused
I’m a non-Catholic so forgive me if my question is ignorant, but what are the feelings of the ND faculty and student body towards abortion? If voting Catholics are apparently split on the issue, aren’t the faculty and students at ND, too?

To be fair to Obama, it’s not like he’s the first pro-choice president we’ve ever had. He may or may not have ever participated in an abortion, via his wife or a girlfriend before her. He doesn’t appear to advocate the process, but like most of us pro-choicers feels that it’s a decision best left to a woman, her conscience and her physician. Bush was supposedly against abortion but I doubt that persuaded anybody not to have one. So why is it a big deal what the president thinks on the issue? I really don’t understand the strong reaction to him accepting an invitation to speak at ND.

What is wrong with Catholics?
They voted 55% for the most pro-choice president ever, one that believes in murdering even those that survive an abortion, voted for partial birth abortion and now invite him to speak at Notre Dame graduation. They also bankrupted dioceses while they covered up sexual perverts in the priesthood and moved them place to place as things heated up. Could it be they have no principles left?
Next years speaker - Lucifer. Reserve that weekend now!

to: way down south
You are 100% correct. I too have said this forever. If you say you are Catholic and voted pro death, then you are not a true Catholic.
These obomba voting Catholics do not attend Mass, and are always smorgasbord Catholics who pick and choose what they want to follow.
I don't condemn them, but they cannot fool God, as he knows their hearts. So, you can fool man, but you can't fool God, so my advice is for these Catholics to get back to Mass, get on your knees, get to confession, and beg God for his forgiveness and mercy. Amen

Huh?
So... Catholics are supposed to 'honor the office', by inviting a President who's only goal in accepting is to drag the good name of Notre Dame through the mud, hoping to score political points with the more brain dead of the faith? Will the football team be coerced to do the photo-op, too? Heisman pose and all?

I'm embarrased for my Catholic friends. This is absurd.

And "follow the money", indeed! I hope someone has access to the actual donation records--because I guarantee some Hollyweird lapsed-catholic will make a HUGE donation just in time for the school administration to claim the Obama invititation had 'no impact on fund raising.'

Very Troubling Indeed
As a centrist, independent-minded Catholic, I am troubled by Obama'a unwillingness, so far, to "make abortions rare." But I want to give him more time--and he may have two terms. Or, he may not.

Anyway, point well taken about respect for the office of the president.

Also, I'm wondering if our Holy Father will allow his picture taken with Obama--I suspect so. Again, it would be about respect for the office and the human being holding it, at present.

Follow the Money!
If this really upsets the Alumni of Notre Dame then let the university feel it on their bottom line - of their donations!
Alumni need to write or email the school and state that their alumni giving won't be coming this year or the next if they insist on having a commencement speaker who supports, votes, and radically disagrees with the prolife beliefs.

Notre Dame no longer catholic
My Dad went to Notre Dame from 1946 thru 1949, and He can tell you, The place no longer even resembles a Cathoilc college. Sure, the shrine is still there, and physical reminders are there, but the faculty and students have become crazed liberals. True Catholics voted for life, and obomber is not our president. God himself will surely remove his hand of protection, and Mary's mantle will no longer cloak the college.
May Our Lady pray for the judas souls at Notre Dame who are in spiritual jeopardy.

Stupid Mistake
Jimmy Carter's claim to the 20th century will remain intact. Obama is in the 21st century. How foolish of me not to catch this! That's what I get for being a wise guy.

Well the
54 percent polled said they are of the Catholic faith. I am certain after their vote for Obama they still consider themselves of the Catholic faith, regardless of the excommunication fact. This, by the way I agree with, they should be excommunicated. My point in all of this is regardless of how committed you are to following the teaching of the Catholic Church, the issue of abortion is a huge issue with the church. Not just any issue, and to ignore it and vote for Obama, who would be the most anti-life president I believe in American history is hard to understand, I can’t make sense of it. No more than I can with Notre Dames decision to invite Obama there. However, we live in an age where principals and core beliefs are just thrown to the wind. For what, PC reason?. Appears so. Very sad.

I posted several times yesterday about Red Envelope Day, March 31st. I hope many sent in their empty envelopes to Obama. We want 50 million sent to him, we need to send a message that there is moral outrage in this country over this issue.

IrishEyes2C
I'm under no delusion. I think BHO and the far left are delighted that Notre Dame's invitation legitimizes their extreme pro-abortion policy while simultaneously undermining the confidence that traditional Catholics place in institutions like Notre Dame.

This commencement invitation is a disaster.

I agree with you regarding the Obama administration. I think it is bereft of both talent and integrity. Geithner's tax problems are self-evident. Eric Holder contributed significantly to the egregious abuse of the power to pardon during the Clinton administration and recently called us cowards for not talking about race relations as often as he would like. Hillary has no qualifications for Secretary of State, and she embarrassed herself and the U.S. with her recent attempt to push the reset button with Russia.

Jimmy Carter must be very happy. He knows that by 2012 he will no longer be considered the worst U.S. President of the 20th century.

To PJM
You are under the delusion that Obama has a conscience. What I’ve see so far from his administration is the hiring of Cabinet members who haven’t paid their taxes, usurping a liberal power grab. The manipulation of the census with the help from his favorite cheerleading section, ACORN, with the idea of fairness. They most likely will discover new District in some states that lean to right, so they can add more seats to the existing liberal controlled House.

Everything they do stink to high heaven. Obama is wants us to trust him, when he refuses to submit his birth certificate as proof of his eligibility to be President. The same issue came up for John McCain who didn’t whine and complained that he shouldn’t have too. He gave it over and was able to proved eligibility.

But, he also wants us to trust him and his Secretary of the Treasury when the man who heads that Division within the Government and controls the IRS, is the same man who didn’t pay his taxes. Little Timmy Geithner wants to control every dollar and what it buys and what he deems worth buying. He seems even more incompetent now, then when he was approved by the Liberals in Congress. And almost every name that has been nominated seems Geithner has had a little problem with paying their taxes. Could it be that they don’t want to include their taxes in other people’s money?

This seems like a controlled controversy seems more like a distraction and an aversion so that Congress can do what they like best, passing laws out of the public eye and public scrutiny.

To be honest, Norte Dame has move further left over the years. At one point the only people to be accepted by the University were just Catholics. Over the years and in order to stay current they drop the rules. They needed to compete with other schools so they allowed non-Catholics entrance. Then, they allowed non-Catholic African Americans in so they could compete with the big boys in sports.

The Pope Has Written,

“A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favour of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.”

You can not be a Catholic and be pro-abortion. The very act of supporting abortion automatically excommunicates you. (latae sententiae)

You can not be a Catholic and vote for a candidate because they are pro-abortion. This automatically excommunicates you. (latae sententiae)

You can not be a catholic and vote for any pro-abortion candidate unless “proportionate reasons” exist. This automatically excommunicates you. (latae sententiae) No one can make the argument that the alternative, John McCain, presented a greater prospect of evil, which is what “proportionate reasons” refer to.

Those that voted for Obama excommunicated themselves. These people have willfully placed themselves outside the church. I wish everyone would stop saying that 54% of all Catholics voted for Obama. They aren’t truly Catholic anymore!

This isn’t my personal opinion. This is official church law and it is fully supported by the Holy Father.

Abortion is not just any issue
54 percent of Catholics voted for Obama, how many of them were Catholic’s in name only and how many are truly practicing Catholic’s. If the first, then well it would be easy for one to rationalize and make excuses for the fact, Obama would be the most anti-life president in American history, yet still be able to cast a vote for him, based on the other issues that are more important to one than abortion. If you were the second, then you know what the Church teaches on abortion. I don’t know how you justify a vote for him based on the knowledge that the Catholic Church states abortion is the killing of a human life. It isn’t just any issue for the church, it is very strict on this issue. From the Catholic Catechism of the Catholic Church (2270): "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life."

Rome D.C.
Christian when you look at Washington D.C. you are looking at Rome.

The Romans only care about you when they're about to be over run by the barbarians.

The romans aint worth sht.

Send Obama a message
Well, if the University still extends the invitation for him to speak, the students and their family can do an immediate protest by turning their back to the head abortionist in the US.

Obama-Nation at Notre Dame
read John Henry Newman's" The Idea of a University"

free discussion of opposing ideas is fine - honoring publicly what the Catholic Church teaches is a grave sin is a scandal to all believing faithful Catholics!

Michael

You can't give an office a degree
Notre Dame is conferring honors, including a law degree, on Barrack Obama - not the Presidency of the United States.

The claim that this is an outrage does not "got to far" by any stretch of the imagination. Notre Dame - through its president, fellows, and trustees - has turned its back on its Catholic Mission, defied the explicit instruction of the college of US Bishops, and ignored the instruction of the diocese Bishop. That is, indeed, an outrage.

Furthermore, Notre Dame is conferring honors upon a politician who advances the cause of Abortion. The author would do well to look up the word "Scandal" in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm

"2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor's tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285 Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."85 Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep's clothing.86

2286 Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion."

This is a TEXTBOOK Scandal as defined by the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the instruction of the US Council of Catholic Bishops.

Who knows?

Sadly, the U.S. Catholic Church is heading the way of the Liberal Press.

Decades of local elitist rule and moral tinkering have damaged the foundation of the Church.

Hopefully the upcoming generation can push the Leftist Hippie elements aside and re-boot.

Justified War on Catholics
Until the POTUS was usurped by BO, all of the above protection of the Presidency made sense but now that a usurper is holding that position they are one, neither the usurper nor the position as a unit can be believed, respected, honored or obeyed. Military officers who take orders from a usurper Commander-In-Chief may themselves be violating their oathes to uphold the Constitution and could be court martialled for so doing. Anyone who defends the usurper or the position he usurped while it is usurped deserves the same treatment afforded the usurper. Only the Constitution and its defenders can currently be held in high esteem as is the state of GA common grand jury who just today indicted BO for occupying a position that he does not qualify to hold. Another legal case questions BO to tell us by what authority he holds such an office. 20 states have ongoing legal battles to shine some light on why BO is not being transparent about his required natural born citizen Constitutional qualifications.
"Declaring war on Catholics" seems justified and warranted, not only for their tipping of the scales toward a usurper president, but for their leader of the Catholic's foremost university, Notre Dame, to subsequently bestow legal honors upon the usurper and openly promote the usurper's use of their soapbox for his vitriol. May the Catholics retreat, apologize and regain their patriotic regard for the U.S. Constitution and the freedom of religion whereby they have so far been able to exist or they will soon experience the dog who bites their hand, even though they FED him.

Simple fact...
...look, Obama is the world's leading abortionist by his words, deeds, and the power of his office. He is already deep into keeping his campaign promises to the NARAL crowd.

Obama is the exact opposite of a person that should be honored at a "Catholic" university. This invitation points up what I've believed for some time now: There is no such thing as a "Catholic" university. There may be come colleges founded by Catholics, and on Catholic principles. But like our society at large, now they just follow the money and influence.

The Honorable Thing to Do
Father Jenkins and BHO should meet and mutually agree to cancel the commencement invitation. BHO should state that after further reflection he has decided his policies and beliefs are inconsistent with those of a Catholic university and he does not wish to offend the university or its administration, faculty, students, and alumni. The university should state that it has the utmost respect for President BHO, and it greatly appreciates the respect he has shown for the priciples of the university and the Catholic church.

This seems to the best way out of this mess. BHO can appear statesmanlike in declinig the invitation whle remaining true to himself; the university can renain true to its principles without insulting the President of the United States.

Patrick Mikes
ND '79

I wonder ...
If we had a pro-slavery president invited to a Black College or even a Catholic College, or any other Christian College that had strong Anti-Slavery leanings - would that University be told to "Honor the Office?" And still, in the moral heirarchy, slavery which is forced labor and a complete denial of liberty - is less offensive than murder of innocents, which is what the Catholic church considers abortion to be.

Honorary Degrees Honors Man, Not Office
"If you cannot honor the man, then honor the office. If you cannot honor the office, then one more democratic bond has been severed."

Mr. Gerson, an honorary degree does not honor the office, it honors the man whose name is on the degree. And it degrades Notre Dame as a Catholic institution to honor a man who voted against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois effectively voting to allow live babies to be tossed into medical waste bins to die.

“Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion”

I urge all Catholics to fully read the Pope’s own unfiltered words in his letter to the American Bishops. It is called,

“Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion – General Principles,”

It pains me greatly to say this, but many Cardinals, Bishops, and Priests cannot be trusted on this issue.

http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?rec num=6041

Many Obama Catholics are Excommunicated

The Catechism, paragraph 2272, states,

“Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” “by the very commission of the offense,” and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.”

Many of the so-called Catholics that voted for Obama are not in communion with the church because they have excommunicated themselves. They have forfeited the right to receive communion.

Those who get abortions or materially assist in providing and procuring abortions have automatically excommunicated (latae sententiae) themselves. Latae sententiae requires no formal church action or litigation of any kind. It is automatic. They must be refused communion as a matter of canon law. The Pope is in full agreement. One only needs to read his 2004 letter to the American Bishops,

“Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion – General Principles,”

This is not a matter that is up for discussion. The bishops and priests are supposed to obey! Can they know which parishioners did what or who they voted for? Of course they can’t. However, it is their sacred duty to communicate the rules of the church to their flocks.

Many Obama Catholics are Excommunicated

Canon Law

“A person who actually procures an abortion incurs a latae sententiae excommunication.”

(Codex Iuris Canonici, BOOK VI: Sanctions in the Church, PART II: Penalties for Particular offences, TITLE VI: Offences Against Human Life and Liberty, Can. 1398:)

“§2 In the case of a latae sententiae penalty attached to an offence, accomplices, even though not mentioned in the law or precept, incur the same penalty if, without their assistance, the crime would not have been committed, and if the penalty is of such a nature as to be able to affect them; otherwise, they can be punished with ferendae sententiae penalties.”

(Codex Iuris Canonici, BOOK VI: Sanctions in the Church, PART I: Offences and Punishments in General, TITLE III: Those who are Liable to Penal Sanctions, Can 1329)

“Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.”

thoughts
Obama should not have recieved a vote from even one real "Catholic." One of the other posters had it correct, one is either a Catholic, or one is not. To be Catholic is to follow the doctrines of the Church, not pick and choose amongst them. It is a disgrace that 54% of people who call themselves "Catholic" voted for the first truly evil man to be elected president of this country.
Should Notre Dame have invited him? No. Should they rescind the invitation? Yes. Oh, and one more thing in re respecting the Office if not the man. I regard Obama with total contempt, and I do not understand how one is respecting the office by allowing a person who is currently polluting it by virtue of perpetrating a fraud, to receive any sort of "honour" whatsoever.

For Taft
Yoy have well illustrated a basic flaw of liberal thought. The argument that any regime, no matter how murderous, should be tolerated if its removal would cause transitory suffering, is venal. Using your logic the French should not have resisted Nazi occupation. The failure of the Iraqi war is one of poor administration, not of motive. The young Americans who went to Iraq are heroes. As a result of their sacrifices 25 million Iraqis have their first opportunity for freedom in 60 years. Those who choose to avoid taking meaningful action against oppressors because of a fear of conflict or adherence to a sanctimonious moral code are more evil than the dictators. Hollow moralizing is easy, leaving your family for 15 months so another mans family might have a future is not.

barack hussein obama . . .
is the antichrist.
With exception of ONE honest congressman (Ron Paul), Both "houses" have a one-way ticket to
h%ll. This also applies to the executive and judicial branches as well.
People of their ilk are quite successful in this life. It can only be just that retribution will be meted out in their life beyond this one.

There is a BIG difference . . .
between a Catholic and a "catholic". I am willing to bet that there are many non-practicing Catholics (and others) who live their lives in accordance with Catholic teachings.
Then, there are the "catholics" who attend Mass every week, are active in church affairs, but pick and choose which doctrines they will follow.

Way down south
is right --- they are giving the MAN an honorary degree. They are honoring HIM. And, although my opinion of abortion is that it is horrible but still an individual choice, I cannot believe that the school is considering honoring a man whose ideas so greatly conflict with Catholic doctrine. I am certain that Hillsdale College would not give this man an honorary degree simply because his PRINCIPLES conflict with those of the school. Further, why would ND even think of giving this man an honorary degree? What has he done to warrant such an honor? He earned this by simply being elected President? I believe that cheapens the degrees that will be handed out to students for their hard work and dedication. If I were an alumnus I wouldn't send a dime to the school and, if I were a graduating senior I'd elect to get my diploma in the mail.

Father Jenkins

is the person who, by providing Obama with an honorary degree, is providing scandal.

He is the one who will answer to God at judgment.

I pray for Father Jenkin's soul and encourage everyone else to do so also. Jesus is quite clear about those who mislead the "little ones".

Pay The Piper.
Government funds in the form of tax write-offs are supporting the Notre Dame college. They are biting the hand that feeds it if they do not allow the president to speak on their campus. The piper must be paid.

Q
Are they better off? Some are, like kurds and some Shia. The thousands of dead and millions of homeless no. The 10 year old Iraqi prostitutes in Syria, definitely not. The women have it pretty bad too and the Thousands of Christians who have either been killed or had to flee.

Dave,

Obama voted to uphold the law. He has plainly stated he favors lowering the abortion rate. It was already, btw, against the law to kill a infant born alive. When that nurse said she found live infants, (odd she didn't rush them to an emergency room), the police came to the clinic and looked for a crime, AND INVESTIGATED IT, because it is a crime not to help a born alive infant. They found not a shed of proof. The nurse went on later to claim that they eat babies in China.

Taft
The 'torture' you so foolishly condemn has inarguably PREVENTED at least three terrorist attacks. So some barbarian had water thrown up his nose. He sang like a canary wrt the attacks then being planned, didn't he? There are no Americans dead from them, are there? I guess it's just possible that he objected to having water applied at all to his filthy person, but that's another subject...

Torture. Do you condemn the behavior of the Gitmo detainees toward their guards-throwing body fluids/waste of all kinds at them? Their simian behavior toward female guards? Just what would you be willing to tolerate in terms of their discomfort if you personally had to put up with this?

Would your attitude toward these cutthroats be so fastidiously humane if the application of discomfort meant that an American city would not be destroyed by a nuclear bomb?

How many American deaths is it worth for you to maintain your sense of misplaced outrage over some cutthroat having water thrown up his nose, or being deprived of sleep, in order that we might be safe?

So called Christians
The decay of backbone and morals among Christians and Christian organizations make me cringe.

Any so called Christian who voted for Obama should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone knew his positions and if you didn't it would have taken about 30 seconds to research them.

I sincerely wanted this man to be one of the best presidents ever. He came after a poor president and is now proving to be worse.

The last paragraph says it all -
his appearance will be a gigantic betrayal and he will surely never be invited again.

Shame Shame Shame on everyone who was a part of this terrible decision!!

The university is publicly SLAPPING THE
FACE of every Catholic and every student and every alumni by inviting this man to speak AND TO RECEIVE AN HONORARY DEGREE from one of the most reputable Catholic universities in the world!

Do they not realize by this invitation, the value of a degree from the university has now been diminished FOREVER???

Bravo to the many alumni who will be burning their diplomas in protest!

The president turned down the longer-standing tradition of the Gridiron Dinner. It's too bad he doesn't have enough class to realize what an affront his appearance as a 'pro-abortion' and 'PRO death of a survivor of a botched abortion' supporter is to the Catholic and pro-life community at large!

Is he Really Invited
A Simple solution to all of this, break tradition and disinvite him just like Boston College disinvited his buddy Bill Ayers.

I am afraid that if something is not done, Notre Dame will not be taken seriously in the future.

This institution has survived a number of years on its core values and with respect to the institiution and its Alumni, Disinvite him.

A Question For Taft & The Pope
One million dead in the Iran/Iraq war, a half million or more murdered during the rule of the Baath party. Are not the people of Iraq better off today without the Hussein family?

Taft is Wrong
Taft, The link you point to does not refute that Obama voted, three times, against legislation protecting infants born alive after a botched abortion. That link only addresses Illinois law without that legislation and how it would have applied to the claims in that campaign add. Obama did vote against the illinois "Born Alive Infant Act" three times, (please check the official Illinois record )and, he is quite clear that a woman can be "punished by having a baby." Additioally, McCain did not cook this up because Obama's anti-life record, including his opposition to the BAI Act, was common knowledge long before McCain won the nomination. Of course, Hilary didn't use it against him because she is just as anti-life as Obama.

Taft, I am not sure why you even bother defending Obama from this, I would think you would be celebrating. Afterall, Obama is the most anti-life President ever to be elected and isn't that the Democrat's goal - abortion on demand, no restrictions and paid for by the government. You have your culture of death Taft, you should enoy it.

AliveinHim
But they are fans of torture and preemptive war, both which are condemned by the Pope. This same Gerson, who is throwing stones is a Bush supporter!

No Quarter for Obama
Notre Dame's failed choice of Obama goes against their own values and traditions!! No one made them choose Obama, who outrightly goes AGAINST what they supposedly stand for!!! In this time of muddled moral relativism they have literally thrown the baby out with the bath.

I will never see or respect Captain Mordor as my president. The devious lying oaf in the OFFICE demeans the office for me for sure!!! Does the office make the man??I think not!!! The medicinal, abortion-for-all-lover, the "hide" and -"you better not seek!" usurper brings the office down---- WAY, WAY down!!

Mr. Grrrrr-son why are you doing apologetics for the devil?

Taft
I'm quite sure neither Newt nor Sarah has ever participated in or legislated for the death of infants....in any case THEY weren't invited!

PS that quote was
actually from the Weigel article cited by Waydownsouth. Taft, you have a bad case of hero-worship.

If pro-lifers, Catholic and others, are forced to pay for abortions, and lose the conscience clauses for hospital workers, I hope the bishops will have the intestinal fortitude to initiate varioius forms of civil disobedience, ranging from partial tax withholding to jail if necessary. time to put up or shut up.

My favorite line in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1903 "...If rulers were to enact unjust laws contrary to the moral order, such arrangements would not be binding in conscience."

Catholic Definition of Scandal
Mr. Gerson,

The way society and the Church define a "scandal" are different. Anytime someone is giving misinformation in the name of the Church or the Church sponsors an event where its people can be misled to think a disturbing line of thought is Truth, there is scandal. Having President Obama speak with no response or debate can cause fringe Catholics to believe the Church sponsors or supports his way of thought. This is scandal without a dbout and Notre Dame should be ashamed.

You may need to do more research next time. I am an avid visitor Townhall.com but the past two articles from Mr. Hunt and you will make me reconsider where I get my information. If you want True Catholic news go to http://www.HeadlineBistro.com

You are right on one thing, the Democrats are steadily losing their hold on old Catholic who thought the party was the one "for the people".

The Illinois thing was a cooked up plot to get McCain elected.

PJM

Would you be as upset if a neocon, like Gingrich, Cheyne or Palin came to speak? Because they all are for preemptive war and for torturing people? In the case of Gingrich, he's also divorced and an adulterer.

Obama goes way beyond :"pro-choice"
Gerson refers to Obama as being "pro-choice." He is actually way beyond that -- remember that Illinois law, which he supported, which would withhold medical care from babies that survive abortion. Think about it. He would prefer a living, breathing human being die (slowly) than interfere with abortion.

My view is this: the _only_ goal of the pregnant woman seeking an abortion is not to have a baby (to raise, to be responsible for, etc.). It is _not_ to ensure that the baby dies. Once she has the abortion, whether or not the baby lives doesn't matter to her, as long as she doesn't have to take it.

The Obama Invitation
Mr. Gerson, you have missed the point. Does Notre Dame's invitation to Obama not indicate a preoccupation with the honors and prestige of mankind and his fallible institutions at the expense of fidelity to the faith? Air Force One, "Hail to the Chief", and the honor of having the President stroll the campus are truly exciting, but at what cost? I cannot help but think of Jesus's warning that the people who set their hearts on the things (and honors) of this world have already received their reward. This invitation is a violent slap in the face to devout Catholics and another example of a church sliding into irrelevance as a result of its failure to expound and defend its core beliefs.

We don't have to respect
someone that was elected by the MSM and Hollywood. This country is in the shi**er and anyone with an ounce of intelligence better wake up.

So you're saying
we should respect the Office of the President more than we respect God?

Catholics believe that God created all those aborted children. What has BO created? These alumni are right. God trumps Barry.

True Catholics
did not vote for Obama. One is not a little bit Catholic anymore than one is a little bit pregnant. It is not possible to reconcile Church teaching with the support of Obama - not just because of the sanctity of life issues, but because coercive redistribution of wealth is immoral.

The average family would not invite an avowed murderer to their home for dinner. Notre Dame shouldn't either.

Don't Whine
54% of Catholics voted for this guy. Remember, there is nothing worse than a war, right?

Honor of the office?
You mean like Clinton? And as for representing America - Obama's philosophy is the antithesis of the Constitution. He therefore does not represent this country.

Respecting the President
Mr. Gerson is right in that whether we respect or agree with the current President, we should respect the office. The one exception to that is if the person residing in the office is violating his oath of office. President Nixon deserved the disrespect he got because he violated law as the President, and thus we could no longer respect him as President. President Obama, in my mind is foresquare in violation of the Constitution in the actions he has taken in pushing government into the furthest reaches of private business, suggesting even a virtual takeover of the insurance industry, while also becoming car salesman in chief.

Mr. Gerson (aka Barney Fife) suggests that only if B.O. goes further in his assault on Catholic values will he risk a permanent scism with "the faithful." I believe that this has already occured as Catholics, along with many other folks, are now experiencing buyer's remorse, having cast their vote with a not-yet-one-term Senator as their President. As is normal, Barney is about two months behind the power curve in predicting "issues" between B.O. and some of his former supporters. Perhaps at some point Barney will predict the fall of the Soviet Union.

Notre Dame may well accept and welcome B.O. onto their campus for a commencement ceremony. That is of little consequence in the long run, but will Catholics welcome his policies that further demean life, and substantially reduce freedom in this once free land?

Let's see
Notre Dame should honor the office by honoring a man who dishonors Catholicism's non-negotiable, a right to life? Mr. Gerson, you are confused.

What a "BLAST" Gerson
The first couple paragraphs of your article are nothing but a load. Given your thoughts Gerson, about the honor of the office, we would never had a Revolution in America to free us from the King of England. Folks like you would have said we could surely not revolt because it would show dishonor to the office of the King. Notre Dame is bestowing a honorary degree upon President Obama, and just what may I ask has he done to earn that?

As a Catholic
I am disappointed that this abortionist has been invited to Notre Dame. I cannot accept this fraud as POTUS due to the fact he has not produced a birth certificate, has locked down all college and medical records (why?), and received campaign funds - over 30% - from illegal foreign sources. And we are to honor this? Sorry Mr. Gerson and Shame on Notre Dame.

Balderdash
The least experienced, most ill-prepared president ever elected to the office is intently busy saying one thing, (or often saying nothing of value)and doing another, while he works diligently dismantling the Republic as it existed prior to January 20th. Yet, folks like Gerson recommend we continue to honor the office, if we can't honor the man.

Barack Hussein oBUMa would commend that advice to all as reasonable, fair, respectful and traditional... while he laughs up his sleeve and pursues his deconstruction of the country.

Should Germans of 65 odd years ago have held to that philosophy? How about those who lived under Stalin, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Idi Amin? Was it appropriate to "respect the office, if not the man" even though both 'office and man' were corrupt, evil and bent on destruction of liberty and personal freedom?

The fact that he was put in office by inarguably the dumbest, lamest, most ignorant, stupid, uninformed, unenlightened, naive, vapid electorate in the history of the country does not convey with it the need to respect either the man or the office as the occupant purposely goes about his agenda of bringing down calamity on all.

Even as we, as patriots, should show no quarter in our battle to save our country, we should show no respect for the Evil One in the Oval Office who despises all that is good, meaningful and moral in our country.

Gerson Is Full Of Something!

This is "an outrage and a scandal."

Notre Dame is giving Barack Hussein Obama an honorary doctorate of laws degree, a fact which Gerson doesn’t bother to mention.

Notre Dame isn’t giving this honorary degree to the office of the presidency, it is giving it to the man.

Either Gerson is woefully misinformed on this issue, or he is doing his best Kathleen Parker imitation.

If you want to read a reasonable view of this issue, read George Weigel’s piece.

The Ghost of Pontius Pilat lives
While the ND Law School has shown surprising support of the Pro-life stance, the majority of the student body supports the invitation. Considering Obama's "above my pay-grade" remarks about life, and Pontius Pilot's "What is truth?" should a good Christian invite the latter to be a speaker at any event.
Mr. Gerson is overly optimistic about liberal Catholics being converted to the Faith, while ND remains so bound in moral relativism.
