Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- After a month of personnel appointments and canine selection, last week was the Obama administration's week of revelation.

In a speech at Camp Lejeune, President Obama pledged "to succeed" in what candidate Obama called a "misguided war" in Iraq -- slowing down his promised pace of troop withdrawals, pledging to retain a substantial military force to support Iraqi democracy, and claiming credit for a "new strategy" that was largely the implementation of President Bush's own. The McGovernite peace candidate became the responsible commander in chief.

On domestic policy, the revelation was different. Candidate Obama was a tonal moderate -- a pragmatist determined to muddle the old divisions of blue and red into a pleasing, post-partisan purple. His mainstream economic appointments seemed to confirm this intention. His stimulus package and bank bailout proposals were expansive and expensive, but not ideologically radical.

And then the budget came -- ideologically ambitious, politically ruthless and radical to its core.

Obama chose a time of recession to propose a massive increase in progressivity -- a 10-year, trillion-dollar haul from the rich, already being punished by the stock market collapse and the housing market decline. This does not just involve undoing the Bush tax reductions but capping tax deductions to collect about $30 billion a year. Despite all the rhetoric of "responsibility" and shared sacrifice, the message of the Obama budget is clear: The wealthy are responsible for the economic mess and they will bear the entire sacrifice so that government can "invest" in the people.

But governments do not "invest," they spend. Such spending can be justified or unjustified. It is wealthy individuals, however, who actually invest their capital in job creation. Most have much less capital than they used to. Under the Obama budget, they would have less still. This does not seem to matter in the economic worldview of the Obama budget. Equality is the goal instead of opportunity or economic mobility. And government, in this approach, is more capable of investing national wealth than America's discredited plutocrats -- meaning successful two-income families, entrepreneurs and professionals.

This is not merely the rejection of "trickle-down economics," it is a weakening of the theoretical basis for capitalism -- that free individuals are generally more rational and efficient in making investment decisions than are government planners.

This ideological shift is also evident in Obama's treatment of charitable giving. The new budget seeks to raise billions for health reform by limiting the charitable deduction for the wealthy. This is a direct claim that the good done by government spending will be more important than the good done by the wealthy. But it is often wealthy people who make the large donations that sustain colleges, universities and teaching hospitals. If government is inherently superior at making such charitable choices in the public good, why not make our entire education and medical systems public? Which seems to be the goal.

As a practical matter, the promise of expensive, shared public goods entirely at the expense of the rich is a transparent deception. A good portion of the budget's spending reduction is illusory -- based on the phony assumption that Iraq and Afghanistan war outlays would have continued at similar levels in perpetuity. The budget's growth assumptions are not remotely realistic. It does little to address the crisis of unsustainable Social Security and Medicare obligations. And its $634 billion health care reform "fund" is merely a down payment -- perhaps a third of the future cost.

So who is going to eventually pay for this accelerating debt, temporarily held by the Chinese and others? As the national debt's percentage of GDP moves from about 40 percent to perhaps 70 percent, there will not be enough wealthy people left to bleed. Once the economy recovers, broad tax increases will be unavoidable. Or Obama's "once-in-a-generation chance" will actually involve the imposition of massive burdens on the next generation.

Conservatives hope Obama's overreach and Harry Reid's and Nancy Pelosi's arrogance will provoke a backlash -- leading markets to revolt, uniting the Republican base and causing doubts among fiscally conservative Democrats. But as an academic at Princeton recently reminded me, "It is only overreach if you fail."

In the meantime, we have learned some important things. On defense policy, the peace candidate is not a radical. On economic policy, the post-partisan could hardly be more partisan. Obama does not want to cultivate conservatives; he wants to crush them. And that is a revelation.

REVELATION
If you think crushing opponents is a "REVELATION" then you haven't been paying attention to his past performances with last minute leaks about political opponents, financial manipulation and his Chicago style politics.
Why should we expect anything different now?

REMEMBER:
A wise prince will seek means by which his subjects will always and in every possible condition of things have need of his government, and then they will always be faithful to him." --Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527)

THIS IS REALLY GETTING SILLY
so called veteran political columnist are JUST NOW SEEING OBAMA? obama spent all his formative years at the knees of marxist. his soul was already formed before stepping foot on the mainland of america. the very first time i heard him speak, heard a deadness in his voice and saw it in his eyes. i said to myself, this man has NO emotional attachment to the united states of america, but he does have a hatred for america and he is carrying out that hatred now. he said at one point that all these people that had 401k savings obtained them unfairly over the poor who did'nt have the extra money to put into 401k. he is carrying out his vendetta by tanking wallstreet and destroying everyones 401k.

NewDeal
You are not a bigot.

But you only criticize the "jews".

What about the Blacks, Italians, Germans, and other races the inhabit the Obama Administration?

No problem with them?

The minute you single out a race, you are a bigot.

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT RACE THEY ARE IN OBAMA'S MACHINE...THEY ARE ALL ANTI-AMERICAN.

I HOPE YOU WILL RETHINK YOUR "JEWS" COMMENT...MOST JEWISH PEOPLE I KNOW ARE HONEST, HARDWORKING AND DECENT PEOPLE. HOW MANY DO YOU KNOW?

ROWDY BOOTS

lilly
Am I supposed to take your comment seriously? 1) We are not a nation. We are 50 nations, in 1787 state and nation had the same essential meaning, and all states under the Articles of Confederation were free, independent and sovereign according to Article 2. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that this was given up, only that the existing union was made better. I could go on.
2) What, I mean seriously WHAT does the fact that we have two dominant parties that vie for power have to do with "how" decisions are to be made. Regardless of party there must be Constitutional fidelity. All these so called government agencies have no foundation in the Constitution, thus "so called" as they are actually illegal usurpations of power not lawfully given under the Constitution. See the 10th amendment and read carefully Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. This is not a feudal system where the states are serfs for the Federal government, rather the states have chosen an agent to represent their interests between themselves and other nations. You will probably have trouble accepting this, but a careful study of history and the origin of the Constitution will show this to be true, what you do with this will depend on kind of person you are.

NOT AMERICAN
I am not a Bigot..

But, I am capable of being of being TOTALLY PIS%ed OFF...FACTS are ::

.Don't Believe it ? ...Ask A Soldier/ Boy Scout/ Chaplain? Minister..ask a Mom who Chose Life ..
Ask a Veteran..

Ask a small Business Owner.

Obama ? Six Weeks and the personification Of UN-American.

Fair?
Where is the "fairness" in 2% of the taxpayers covering 40% of the tax burden, and 5% covering 60%?

I seriously doubt if most Americans who voted for Obama truly understood how radical he is - shame on them. But now that you are coming to grips with what he truly wants to do to this country, ask yourself - does he really care about the "middle class", or is he using you to solidify his own power? Is your $400 tax increase going to make any difference in your life when it's doled out $13 a week?

In the end, if you squeeze the producers and investors, the net result will be fewer jobs and less money for all. So you may get a short term gain, but in the long run, he's screwed everyone.

Revelation?
It is a damned shame that allegedly perceptive folks such as Mr. Gerson think it is a revelation that Mr. Obama is a left-wing radical. Mr. Gerson is among those folks who chose to see what he wanted to see in Mr. Obama.

Mr. Obama is a dangerously out-of-touch ideologue who will drive this country into the ditch to achieve his ends.

Turn About is Fair Play
We are a two-party nation. The two parties have very different vision of how to govern. It is natural for the half of the country whose party lost power to be disaffected and unhappy. Please remember that for nearly thirty years, since Reagan was inaugurated, Democrats, who believe in a strong federal government, had to put up with defunding and disempowering of government agencies and with the deregulation of every aspect of business. Factories were allowed to pour their waste into the air and water (the environment got filthy). Drug companies, not federal scientists, were allowed to decide whether a drug was safe to market (often it wasn't safe). Food manufacturers were allowed to police their own safety standards (and now we have salmonella in the peanut butter). Business and the very rich were excused from paying taxes. All of this was a hard-right agenda. Obviously it didn't leave us all better off than we were before. So now the other party has taken over, and hopefully the pendulum will swing back toward the center. It's only fair, and the middle class will be the better off for the new changes. I doubt whether most who post on townhall make more than $250,000 a year.

I hope you are correct in stating that the Marines will stand with the people if it comes to that.

I wonder about that since the military is trained to obey orders. Would they shoot at their fellow citizens because they were told these people are rebels out to destroy the country?

Barbara
My husband is buried at Arlington. When I saw she was there speaking, I wanted to scream. How dare her and her husband pretent that they care about our military and their families. He is a pathetic excuse for a commander in chief. And did I read that he said, "Semper Fi" when he was in N

Michele Obama addresses military spouses
Her remarks were like watching someone who didn't like to cook perusing a recipe for food she didn't want to serve. She appeared very reserved and void of any passion for the job she was going to do. I see her working in that way because she is only posturing to cover for her and her husband's contempt for the military. They are both a couple of losers when it comes to supporting the military. Shame on them!!!

NOT SO!
"On defense policy, the peace candidate is not a radical." Baloney!

Any commander in chief with a half of a brain would not address a crowd of United States Marines, at Camp LeJeune no less, telling them that they have or will fight and sacrifice in a "misguided war". To go on to say that a few of these best men will be used to guarantee his "new strategy" is the supreme insult. What does this man think are his qualifications to strategize anything that a U.S. Marine does? My Dad and brother are U.S. Marines (inactive as they never become "ex Marines") and they could out think and out fight him any day of the week. Did I mention that my Dad was 81 years old? What Obama owed these men was a great big "Thank you for your dedication and service to our country. I am certain that America will not forget your sacrifices while doing your honorable duty on behalf of all of us, in the past as well as right at this very moment." Obama hasn't got any respect for the military unless they are the one's flying and guarding his helicopter or other aircraft as well as the White House. If I were so unpopular with such a broad section of the population in an uproar, I'd chose my words more carefully. "Send in the Marines" will be his first rallying cry when he wants to declare martial law; unfortunately for him, they will be on the side of their fellow citizens. After all, a U.S. Marine is the last stand of a free people. May God bless them tenfold!

Concluding remarks
Only those who weren't paying attention during the campaign are "learning" about Obama now. Look at his voting record, look at who he counts as friends. Those who are surprised now were, instead, listening to his rhetoric.

Red Diaper Baby
There was a great column in the American Thinker Oct 30 with the theme that Obama was immersed in Marxist theory from birth, coining a very interesting term for him.

But you can help remove him now, not next year after he wrecks the country. A lot of legal research has determined that he is NOT ELIGIBLE to be POTUS. It's not a kook theory- go read the research for yourself and decide. One good summary is at http://paralegalnm.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/barack-hussein -obama-a-natural-born-subject-of-great-britain/

The Constitution requires that he be born of TWO parents on US soil. His websites admit he was born of a British Kenyan citizen. He is spending a million dollars to prevent the release of his valid, original, long-form "vault" birth certificate, college and passport records. WHY is he hiding these from the American public?

Check out federalistblog.us for explanation of "natural born citizen." The lawyer,Dr. Taitz, who is handling a number of the dozen lawsuits requiring him to show proof he is eligible, posts at defendourfreedoms.us.

Congress and the Supreme Court must be forced to look at this issue and demand the release of his life documents.

Pitchfork Time?
If "crushing conservatives" is what it takes, then, as we say in AA, "it takes what it takes." (To hit the final "bottom" so that maybe, maybe now--you can get with the program of Recovery.)

One beautiful thing about elections in a democratic republic is that the other guy, or gal, gets his chance. I think Obama knows that he is taking a big chance. Audacious is his middle name.

But please, President Obama, don't mess with our Social Security. That's about all I will have. (I've "invested" only in ideas, and I'll continue to do so--but I need that Social Security check when the time comes!)

Thank you, Mr. Gerson, for this very sober and sobering analysis of where we are right now. And thanks also to the true academics of the world. (The true ones, not the narrow and closed-mind ones.)

ARROGANT CREATOR OF AGENCIES
HOW MANY NEW AGENCY HEADS DOES OBAMA CALL ADVISOR?

I'm just a regular citizen
But, I can see pretty well, even at my advanced age.

I can see that no one in a position of authority has a clue what to do with the economic woes facing us. That includes politicians of BOTH parties and BOTH the Executive and Legislative branches. That includes the talking heads and "experts" we see on TV and on the editorial pages of our newspapers. And it includes Wall Street.

There are solutions, and they don't require the massive spending both political parties have spent.

The solution lies with the American people and a New Capitalist model - a new model designed for the new Century and the Global Economy. The new model can be tested in the auto industry. The new model can do more than just put GM on par with Toyota. It can make GM vastly more productive and profitable than Toyota.

The ideas that can revive GM, can be spread throughout the manufacturing sector, and then be adapted to virtually every business in America.

And, the new Capitalist model doesn't cost a dime.

Mr. O, Wall Street, Repubs and Dems, none of you have the solution. We, the people, have the solution. Give me a call. We might be able to make a deal.

Market Revolt
I can understand that investors might want to revolt in a market - but, how do they? Sell, and invest in out-of-country instruments? Just what is a "Market Revolt" in practical terms?

"Free ride?"
My antennae is always up for tidbits that stoke my curiosity.Get this..I heard some radio personality say that Obama has a "free ride with the press until 2010".Seemed to me like someone let the cat out of the bag? Of course,if we survive until then, there'll be no way for him to hide his agenda any longer, and no amount of so-called journalists will be able to cover for him anymore.Anyone else catch drift of this?

Stock market in a dive
This is what happens when your country is ruled by a clueless egomaniac who has a love for Communism and state control of industry and also wants to control free speech and the media.

ohh boy
god help us
