Obama's Ambition

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama was elected, in part, as the antidote to ambition. Unlike John F. Kennedy, who campaigned against the golf-playing complacency of the Eisenhower era, Obama appealed to a nation weary of large national exertions -- a nation longing for a normalcy beyond the wars, hurricanes, floods and assorted plagues of the Bush years.

Yet headed toward the inauguration, the scale of Obama's ambition is becoming evident.

I am not referring to his stimulus plan, which tends toward the limited and conventional. Obama's tax cuts are designed to improve household cash flow. But it is the iron rule of stimulus packages that temporary tax cuts have temporary results -- like coffee instead of a meal for a hungry man.

Obama's proposed infrastructure spending has the Lincolnian appeal of fostering "internal improvements" -- raising the prospect that public spending might have some lasting public benefit. But there is a fine line between infrastructure and pork -- the line between building a bridge, which might promote economic growth, and painting a bridge, which merely provides a few jobs for a few weeks. And Congress is not particularly known for its navigation of fine lines.

The Obama economic plan is expensive but hardly revolutionary -- much less "socialist." In reality, American presidents have few levers long enough to shift a continental economy. During an economic winter, they shovel the snow -- and then take credit for the spring.

But there are two other areas where Obama's campaign pledges are proving ambitious.

First, Obama proposes to require all but the smallest businesses to provide health coverage to employees -- or pay a tax. He would also create a government-run insurance plan similar to Medicare that would compete with private companies to cover the uninsured. The problem is this: Because government can impose price controls, it can make the public option cheaper. Companies, tired of dealing with complicated health care burdens, would have an incentive to drop employees from coverage, and uncovered individuals would have an incentive to join the public system -- achieving universal nationalization of health care by small steps.

In reacting to this approach, Republicans face a difficult, defining moment. This is not 1994, when opponents, offering no alternatives, killed the Clinton health reform. Many businesses are sincerely discontented with the current employer-based system.

But predominantly publicly run health care is an ideological red line for Republicans. In other instances where the middle class has become dependent on government for its health care -- witness Britain -- the conservative case for individual responsibility and limited government has been fundamentally undermined. People hold tightly to the security of their benefits even when treated by a health system with surly incompetence. Not even the most compassionate conservative is going to accept government control of 16 percent of the economy.

If Obama's proposal demonstrates genuine neutrality between public and private health options -- empowering individuals to make a free choice -- it could gain significant Republican support. If the plan is an intermediary step toward a single-payer system, Obama can expect a serious fight, even from a weakened opponent, because the deepest values of American conservatism will be at stake.

Second, the scale of Obama's environmental ambitions has been highlighted by the current economic crisis.

It is another iron rule that prosperous, confident nations do more for the environment than economically struggling ones. And this sets up a conflict between Obama's urgent environmental diagnosis -- a cumulative scientific case for serious, possibly catastrophic climate disruption -- and the economic and political realities of the moment.

The centerpiece of Obama's environmental approach is an "economy-wide cap-and-trade program," designed to dramatically limit greenhouse gas production. But this would act as a large tax on the use of fossil fuels -- in an economy where falling energy prices have been one of the few sources of good news.

If Obama plows ahead with an aggressive cap-and-trade system, Republican and Democratic opponents -- focused exclusively on jobs -- will find plenty of excuses for legislative inertia. If he phases in a system too slowly, it will undermine his own arguments for urgency. If he abandons a cap-and-trade system in favor of investing in eco-infrastructure -- a more efficient energy grid, weatherizing public buildings -- he will get what he wants, and also get slammed for betraying a serious commitment.

During the campaign, I sometimes criticized Obama for lacking specificity and ambition. But as the specifics emerge, the ambitions of his campaign pledges are ever more clear.

Barack the child
Obama is showing that he is a naive child. I never thought I'd EVER say that I'd prefer Hillary!

CIA is serious business not the place for on the job training.

Does he think that he can invite Osama to Starbucks for a latte and "work this out"? Maybe the great charmer (don't forget the teleprompter)can convince Osama that the 21st centurary is better than the 7th.

Will he delcare a be nice to terrorists month!

Infrastructure proposal is the "Big Dig" on steroids. What else would you expect from an Illinois pay to play politician.

so far 1 big joke!

So Many Promises
So little money.

GOP Ideas? Now THAT'S a New Years Wish!
Let's hope the GOP DOES get out front on Health care and the environment...Notice Gerson admonishes Republicans from just opposing Dems, like in the good ol Clinton days...See, Gerson get's it...He's been watching closely...Gerson understands something that most Conservatives don't want to see: Obama is a step ahead of the old playbook....Look what he does on this stimulus thing...He offers business incentives (still unclear) and tax cuts for middle class...He covers the masses (both middle class and small business) and leaves the GOP to position themselves where they NEVER want to be "The Party of Big Corporations"...Gerson's stepping up his game because he knows that he HAS to...The Conservatives who continue to view this guy as a lightweight/extremist/socialist/overmatched pol will continue to lose. The GOP needs to stop playing checkers. The new game is chess. Recognize the game. Your country needs you!

Rubber About to Hit the Road

Well, we all knew that it was coming. Democrats can't manage themselves much less the nation! Pop some popcorn, sit back, and take it all in!

2010 is just around the corner :)

The Dark Ages
How many centuries did they last?

Why does' Gerson write?
Honestly I begin to tire of this drivel. Has this man ever read the Constitution? It can't be that he has or he would be decrying this abomination of government that IS NOT what the Constitution lays out. Please see what Jefferson said about Constitutionality

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/bank-tj.asp

Compare that to what we have today.

Global Warming?
"a cumulative scientific case for serious, possibly catastrophic climate disruption"? I think it's the other way around. What are we? - now 11 years of cooling temperatures? I'm a scientist and I see no justification for expecting "catastrophic climate disruption" anymore than we always have.

I don't
have to be a scientist, all I have to do is look out my window. We could use some Global Warming, we've had one snowstorm after another and if it weren't for a couple of freezing rain storms we'd be up to our eyeballs in drifts.
All this baloney about 'infrastructure" as someone aptly put it, Big Dig on steroids. Why not invest in some SALT so we can navigate the skating rinks we euphemistically refer to as roads..o yeah Salt isn't eco friendly but ice isn't people friendly. Our country road is
a white sheet of ice. Not to worry, if he can make the oceans recede he can warm up, with just his speeches, my part of the North..since he's nothing but a pretty gasbag lost without a teleprompter.

Marginalized
Hurray! Conservatives are widely recognized as being wrong on the Iraq War, on global warming, and on supply side economics. The best part? They continue to stay on the same side of these issues and truly believe that they still have a say in national politics! Enjoy the wilderness down here in the landlocked south.

Obama lacks the "right stuff"

We are already seeing the early signs of Obama's weakness.

No transparency. Hes not inclusive. He works in secret behind closed doors. He get defensive when questioned by the media. He appoints less qualified people to satisfy political partisans.

He is naive about world affairs. He is willing to jeopardize national security. He willing to punish success and reward failure.

He has a clear vision of where he want to lead the nation but due to economic circumstances caused by his own party, they are unrealistic because there is no money to fund his vision.

With his lack of moral conviction and lack of political courage, he will not do well as a Liberal, moderate or conservative leader.

TO jeffersonian constitutionalist
Hey punk, you took the name I would like, now give it up. :)

Obama to Star as "The President"
I think Obama's ambition is nothing more than he wants to play president. It's al about him. He wants to hold his head high and look presidential. This way he can steel, I mean make millions "post-presidency" on the speaking circuit - like Clinton is doing.

Of course, he is about to find out that being president and playing president are two different things. Decisions he makes could kill millions.

Obama and AGW
For someone being promoted as "the most intelligent president ever", he seems to be quite ignorant on the environment.

With all of the evidence coming out now that AGW is a myth, you would think a person of his supposed intellect would, at a minimum, want to fund both sides of the debate equally and then act on that.

He is a lawyer, afterall. Last I checked they do not teach physics, chemistry, or geology in law school. Decisions based on perception and not fact will prove to be dangerous.

The Clintons & Obama
Looks like the Clintons have a hand in many of these directions of the new administration. Panetta was a Clinton man,so were several of the others. Rahm-bo,for example.

Does Obama know he is green to his new job and is relying on the Clintons for experienced advice? Or are the Clintons forcing him to accept their people because of knowledge of damaging information of his past?

Lenard from MD

Lenard you want it. You got it. I will change to something else.

I just wanted the thought of Thomas Jefferson's love of less government and more personal freedom in the debate.

Two concepts that are alien to today's Liberals.

Enjoy :)

Rowly
My suspicion is that George Soros is forcing the Clintons on Obama. No one ever wanted Obama at the start. Is great acting ability changed everyone's mind. Yet, Soros, who funds the liberal machine will get what he wants and I believe he wants Clinton.

Obama's Infrastructure Plan

Now lets all understand what Obama is proposing.

Obams believes the people of Florida should be paying for Bridges and Highways in California while California's taxpayers are paying for Illegals to attend college. Illegals get free healthcare, and Inmates in their prisons getting sex change operations.

Yea that makes sense.

The world according to Liberals.

Steven
Yes,I think Soros owns the entire Democrat Party. That is why they have gone hard left. I also think he knew because of his color,Obama would be above reproach.

I wonder did he know the media would fall in love with him? Or does Soros own them also?

Hey Col. Billy
Don't forget the free stuff for George Soros--most of our hard-earned tax dollars will be given to George Soros just because.

Rowly
I'm not sure what Soro's connection with media is.

I believe that the media sees themselves at great thinkers, intellectual. This is why they tend to have substance-less material. They want you to believe what they say simply because they said it. Media always leans left because of this.

If they leaned right they would have to support their conclusions with facts and this requires effort.

So, the media likes left because left is lazy.

And, they get invited to all the intellectual, in-crowd cocktail parties. Hanging out with the dimwits in Hollywood, and all that.

Hey Paul
11 years of cooling temperatures!!??

Where? When? What are you talking about.

Steven
Steven (my son's name, but with a ph.) Well, the media are all Democrats, for the most part. So Soros does virtually own them.

Too many conservatives like to be popular,so they hang out and laugh and drink with the left. That is one of our problems.

Obama's Ambition?
More like "hubrus".

Tired Already
I am already tiring of listening to the president elect talking and never saying anything of substance. My liberal associates always say what a great speaker he is and I ask them to tell me one thing they remember that he said. It is not surprising they can't answer my question. Try it on the liberals and you will see what I am talking about.

col. billy mitchell
Such graciousnes. I was just kidding sir. My way of acknowledging someone who gets it. SO please keep it.

What was that, Aggie?
I just finished reading your post and I can't even remember what you said.

Denise
Did you mean "hubris"?

Hey steven
Do you have grandkids? If so, tell them to buy some land that is a few miles inland from Houston. The "myth" of Global Warming will make it waterfront property by the time they are ready to retire.

Obama changing his mind? Nooooo
Obama does not need to do anything that is going to impact his re-election negatively. By now, the media has given him a pass anytime he offers a 'new idea' that contradicts his 'other new idea'. Case in point, he promised a tax hike for those earning over 250K, now he says, the legislature can handle that or he may choose to wait for Bush's tax cuts to expire in 2010. The good news is that the economic melt down with limit Obama's options and actions. And that is the best news any conservative can hope for given his proposed socialist agenda. I hope everything melts down to the extent that ice will be selling as low as oil. That is what I call killing two birds with one stop i.e. stopping comrade in chief and curbing the ability for terror sponsering regimes like Iran to keep funding hamas.
Happy New Year Conservatives - it may end up being a good year after all.

Albert - make that super size pop corn
The best of the Hussein administration is yet to come, what with Hillary leading the 'negotiations' with russia, iran, iraq, pakistan, india, venezuela and the new relationship with cuba. This will be the error of ivy league miscalculations in our history. If people think wall street had a crash this year, imagine a federal government with big leadership gaps that russia becomes the new global leader funded by china. That is where hussein is taking the USSR.
