The Perils of Condescension

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- In the last few weeks Barack Obama has learned the political perils of condescension.

His Philadelphia speech on race was filled with it. People who don't share Obama's views were not refuted, they were explained.

Lower income whites, he argued, "feel their dreams slipping away" and so they turn to resentment against busing and affirmative action, "anger over welfare" and "fears of crime." And Obama not only understands these angry and manipulated souls, he defends them. They should not, after all, be labeled as "misguided" or "racist."

This is the same argument, expressed more bluntly at a San Francisco fundraiser, that Obama made about bitter, small-town Americans who cling to guns and religion. He does not even admit the possibility that these folks might have actual convictions on issues of affirmative action, welfare, crime, gun ownership or the meaning of the universe. The only thing more insulting than being attacked is being explained.

In his Philadelphia speech, Obama applied the same lofty discernment to his own racial and religious community. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright -- and other African-Americans guilty of "bitterness and biases" -- was described as a product of a difficult experience. Wright "came of age in the late '50s and early '60s, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted." Obama urged a large-hearted tolerance for Wright's foibles instead of engaging his arguments.

Obama's response, I believe, provided a justification for Wright's media campaign to describe black liberation theology. Wright may be a camera-seeking egotist. He is certainly a showman, enjoying his moment. But his main argument seems to be: "No, Barack, I actually hold these theological convictions. You may need to attack me for political reasons.

But don't you dare dismiss me as a batty uncle."

It is a tribute to the power of the Christian message that there is such a thing as African-American Christian theology at all. Christianity was the religion held by slave masters -- often distorted into an ideology of oppression. But African-Americans found a model of liberation in the Exodus. They discovered that Jesus more closely resembled the beaten and lynched slave than their pious oppressors. And African-Americans -- by their courageous assertion of God's universal love and man's universal dignity -- redeemed a nation they had entered in chains.

But black liberation theology takes this argument a large step further

-- or perhaps backward. Rev. Wright's intellectual mentor, professor James Cone of Union Theological Seminary, retreats from the universality of Christianity. "Black theology," says Cone, "refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him." And again: "Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy." And again: "In the New Testament, Jesus is not for all, but for the oppressed, the poor and unwanted of society, and against oppressors."

This emphasis on the structural evil of white America has natural political consequences -- encouraging a belief that American politics is defined by its crimes, a tendency to accept anti-government conspiracy theories about AIDS and drugs, a disturbing openness to anti-American dictators such as Castro and Gaddafi. It explains Wright's description of the 9/11 attacks as a "wake-up call" to "white America."

But the deepest flaws in black liberation theology are theological, not political. Jesus did advocate a special concern for the rights and welfare of the poor and helpless. But he specifically rejected a faith defined by social and political struggle, much to the disappointment of his more zealous followers. The early church, in its wrenching decision to include Gentiles as equals, explicitly rejected a community defined by ethnicity. No Christian theology that asserts "Jesus is not for all" can be biblical.

Yet this kind of substantive disagreement ultimately shows more respect for black liberation theology than Obama initially did. Most people would rather be termed right or wrong than dismissed. And a smart, passionate pastor such as Wright naturally wants his views to influence his own congregation. He has every right to ask Obama, "Have you just now noticed my most basic beliefs? Have you really been asleep in the pew for 20 years?"

Under the pressure of Wright's clarity, Obama has now awakened from his theological slumbers. But a lesson remains: "Transcending" is often indistinguishable from "condescending."

Great Punch Line!

C.S. Lewis called it "Bulverism"
From "God in the Dock", 1941:

You must show that a man is wrong before you start explaining why he is wrong. The modern method is to assume without discussion that he is wrong and then distract his attention from this (the only real issue) by busily explaining how he became so silly.

In the course of the last fifteen years I have found this vice so common that I have had to invent a name for it. I call it "Bulverism". Some day I am going to write the biography of its imaginary inventor, Ezekiel Bulver, whose destiny was determined at the age of five when he heard his mother say to his father — who had been maintaining that two sides of a triangle were together greater than a third — "Oh you say that because you are a man." "At that moment", E. Bulver assures us, "there flashed across my opening mind the great truth that refutation is no necessary part of argument. Assume that your opponent is wrong, and the world will be at your feet. Attempt to prove that he is wrong or (worse still) try to find out whether he is wrong or right, and the national dynamism of our age will thrust you to the wall." That is how Bulver became one of the makers of the Twentieth Century.

Bulverism continued
C.S. Lewis said about "Bulver's" discovery (http://www.barking-moonbat.com/God_in_the_Dock.html):

I find the fruits of his discovery almost everywhere. Thus I see my religion dismissed on the grounds that “the comfortable parson had every reason for assuring the nineteenth century worker that poverty would be rewarded in another world.” Well, no doubt he had. On the assumption that Christianity is an error, I can see clearly enough that some people would still have a motive for inculcating it. I see it so easily that I can, of course, play the game the other way round, by saying that “the modern man has every reason for trying to convince himself that there are no eternal sanctions behind the morality he is rejecting.” For Bulverism is a truly democratic game in the sense that all can play it all day long, and that it give no unfair advantage to the small and offensive minority who reason. But of course it gets us not one inch nearer to deciding whether, as a matter of fact, the Christian religion is true or false. That question remains to be discussed on quite different grounds - a matter of philosophical and historical argument. However it were decided, the improper motives of some people, both for believing it and for disbelieving it, would remain just as they are.

...

Until Bulverism is crushed, reason can play no effective part in human affairs. Each side snatches it early as a weapon against the other; but between the two reason itself is discredited. And why should reason not be discredited? It would be easy, in answer, to point to the present state of the world, but the real answer is even more immediate. The forces discrediting reason, themselves depend of reasoning. You must reason even to Bulverize. You are trying to prove that all proofs are invalid. If you fail, you fail. If you succeed, then you fail even more - for the proof that all proofs are invalid must be invalid itself.

What if ...
I would love to see how the primary season would have played out to this point if the six week lapse in which Rev. Wright surfaced had taken place a couple of months earlier....No doubt Senator O would have racked up far fewer wins and far fewer super delegates as a result of his repugnant associations with the likes of Wright, and the unrepentant Weatherman terrorist, Ayers.
In fact, Senator O might have been pushed from the race altogether. Senator O has revealed many flaws in his character to us, for those who chose to have their eyes open, and one of those is a glass jaw and a weak stomach for confrontation. He will be a weak and spineless president if he should get that far, and I am one who certainly hopes and prays every day that he does not. We need a strong and determined leader of solid character. If one is willing to honestly look at the evidence, Senator O is not that person. He is an academician who is darned good at speeches - there's precious little evidence that he's particularly good at anything else. He is untested and untried, unchallenged and unprepared...He will create a far worse leadership vacuum than George W. - that's the last thing that we need. His "new politics" is nothing new - simply a recoil effect against the current administration...His cool and aloof behavior is symbolic of someone who has no clue of how to fight, or how to fight back. He's not stupid, but he is naive. Our ememies can't wait. They are salivating at our nation tearing itself apart to put a neophyte in charge out of racial guilt and exhaustion with Bush...Be very, very careful what you vote for ... you just might get far more (AND far less) than you had hoped for...

What Senator Obama
seeks to "explain" is how so many people can be so different in their opinions and beliefs from him. When he, and all the truly "enlightened", know for a fact that he, and they, are never wrong.

After all, he's never met anyone who disagreed with him. Anywhere. Not at Democratic fundraisers, or D.C. cocktail parties, or DNC strategy planning sessions, or college all-night readings of Marcuse, or his church, or.....or just anywhere.

Everyone who "matters" agrees with him, so he MUST be right.

And anyone who doesn't agree with him is just stupid. And desperately needs to have their consciousness raised.

Enter the Savior, on a white horse, stage left.

And he isn't leaving the stage until you all shut up and sing! (His tune, that is.)

And he probably won't even leave then. After all, in his mind, we owe it to him. How else can he "heal" us?

Of being different from him, that is.

cheers

Obama, clearly "sinkable"
The problem obama has always had was that he surrounded himself with yes-men and lackeys, and has lost all perspective. Therefore he still has the temerity to go to rallies filled with adoring fans, do the head swagger and ghetto talk thing, brush off his shoulder, not-so-subtley give hillary the finger, and go along his merry way. Is this clown so oblivious that he doesn't realize his ship is sinking: [In british accent] "oh, it's okay, our ship has hit an iceberg but it should hold up; you know, they call this ship 'unsinkable'".
goodnight, and good luck, liberal suckers!

It is apparent...
that Cone has created, and seeks to have accepted by the black community, a black God, whose "chosen people" are the black races.

This is his way of justifying his feel good about yourself religion, rather than follow the tenets of truth and Christian charity.

Obama's condescension
Regardless of Rev. Wright's rantings or Mr. Cone's twisted "black" theology,it is Mr. Obama who is seeking national office. Although it is fair to question the judgement/naivete of one who claims to be "unaware" of his pastor and spiritual mentor's basic beliefs.

Mr. Obama seeks to sit in councils of power, to negotiate for and represent the interests of the ENTIRE country, not just those who blindly follow his superficial mantras of hope and change.
His apparent lack of understanding of Americans combined with his elitist condescencion betray an utter lack of the qualities and abilities necessary to be an effective or trustworthy Chief Executive. Has this man EVER held a REAL, non-government or for-profit job? Ever had to lead or motivate people who were not "starry-eyed idealists"?
Methinks Messrs. Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Assad, or even Mugabe would eat him for lunch. The world is how it is, not how we wish it to be. Anyone recall another certain religious liberal Democrat idealist with little or no foreign policy experience who became president? How did that work out for us again? Seems to me it took 8 years of Reagan to fix the country afterwards.

This man is
so out of touch with reality it is sad. He and his wife are living in la la land and have NO idea what it is like in the REAL world.

Good commentary Mr. Gerson and you're right, his condescending attitude will be the political death of him. I sincerely hope!

His association with Ayers bothers me more than with Wright. Wright is a blowhard like Sharpton and Jackson, Ayers put his hatred into action.

Obamba screws Wright without even a kiss
I never thought I'd be defending Rev. Wright, HOWEVER, Obamba is the WORST liar by denouncing his "friend" and pastor, and it is obvious now that he just used him.
THAT is despicable.

Obamba used Rev. Wright, his church, his connections, and anything else he could get to jumpstart his campaign. And NOW he actually thinks that he can just screw him and split?
Think again.

Obamba's chickens will come home to roost for this one.

Look to see Rev. Wright come out and mock Obamba and worse for feigning shock and disgust over his speech. He is NOT going to let Obamba screw him without so much as a kiss. That’s RAPE in my book, and worse, perverted Obamba insists we WATCH!

Rev. Wright is a lot of things and I've been one of his fiercest critics, but he's not a LIAR like Obamba.

I'm on Rev. Wright's side on this one.

CALL THE CORONER!!
its real simple.... as a matter of fact let me spell it out to you all in a way you'll understand! lets get to the facts! obama and his angry street like wife attended that church (if you even want to call it a church) for 20 plus years end of story!!

obama is bleeding perfusely and has been since they left the state of texas!! he bled all the way to ohio on to pensylvania! by the time he got to indiana he was no longer bleeding because he bled out aka bled to death!

the entire country only has 4 words for obama-boy..

"REVEREND WRIGHT" "SOUND JUDGEMENT"

no one in their right mind would vote for obama now!! what you really need to do is check out what clinton does to that snob in indiana and north carolina and you will see just what im talkingn about!

IF OBAMA OR MICHELLE THINK THEY ARE GOING TO BE LIVING IN THE WHITE HOUSE THEY ARE DEAD WRONG!
THE ENTIRE COUNTRY IS NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN!

IN CASE YOU'RE STILL CLUELESS......

OBAMA IS NO LONGER LIVING!

OBAMA AND COLLEGE BASKETBALL
if this country see "obama" playing basketball one more time i think we will all throw-up! if you really look at him dong that on tv its very easy to see "HE'S MORE INTERESTED IN THAT THEN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT"

OBAMA AND COLLEGE BASKETBALL
if this country see "obama" playing basketball one more time i think we will all throw-up! its beginning to be repulsive to see him acting like a little kid when the man is like almost 50 yrs old!

he might want to stop craving the attention he seems to be looking for each and everyday by making sure hes in the media playing some...what an IDIOT! just another reason hes just too immature which is another reason the entire country is slowly getting tired of him...

im so glad finally the real obama has now been revealed to the entire country with the revelation of reverend wright, ayers, the bitter condescending remarks he made about people, his non patriotic ways along with all the lies he keeps telling to everybody! its incredible when you pull the words hes used and see his flip flops everyday!

WHAT A LIAR!

WHAT HE REALLY NEEDS TO DO IS LIVE IN A COLLEGE DORM AND PLAY FOR THE COLLGET TEAM INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE THE PRESIDENT!

THIS IS HOW MOST BLACK PEOPLE THINK..
most white people are voting for clinton simply put....shes more experienced or normal type reasons why anybody would vote for somebody!! one thing we dont do is vote for somebody just because they are white! we arn't that stupid!....

what i find incredibly dumb is most (92% - 96%) of black people are voting for obama simply because hes black!! that shows a great lack of judgement or intelligence at least to me it does.

you know if obama was on the national news tonight in handcuffs becuase he just pulled a armed robbery 92% -96% of black would still vote for him simply becauase hes black and they just cant go against a black man (or for better words be considered a uncle tom or some b.s. like that which most black people would call their own color if god forbid they did vote against him)!

that to me is what makes most black people look like they have no intelligence because they are groomed to never ever go against their own black man ever! that to me is where most black people need to work on because they are truly hurting themselfves not thinking for themselves!!
dumb!

IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR MOST BLACK PEOPLE TO WAKE UP AND START DOING WHAT YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL MIND WANTS TO DO INSTEAD OF BEING PROGRAMMED BY YOUR WHATEVER!!

ISNT IT ABOUT TIME SOME BLACK PEOPLE TRY FOR ONCE DOING IT THE WAY THEY WANT TO DO THINGS? OR EXPIERMENT AROUND TO AT LEAST KNOW WHAT THEY WANT INSTEAD OF BEING STEROTYPED TO HAVE TO MAKE THEIR DECISIONS ON HOW THEIR FAMILY OR FRIENDS DO IT!! THATS WHERE MOST OF YOU LOSE!! YOUR TOO AFRAID TO DO WHAT IT IS YOU WANT TO INSTEAD SUCKING UP TO HOW PEOPLE OF YOUR OWN COLOR DO IT!!

GET IT? START THINKING INDEPENDENTLY!!

I LOVE ALL OF YOU BUT NOT WHEN YOU GROUP UP LIKE THAT AND DONT THINK FOR YOURSELF OUT OF FEAR TO DO WHAT YOU WANT INDIVIDUALLY!

ExCanuck
I give you 5 stars for:

"Methinks Messrs. Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Assad, or even Mugabe would eat him for lunch."

Methinks you are correct!

BLACK PEOPLE DO U NOW SEE WHAT OBAMA IS
DOING TO ALL OF YOU????????????????//

THE REINVENTION OF REVEREND WRIGHT.....
LORD HAVE MERCY!!

i've now heard it all! obama has reinvented this story so many different ways its beginning to sound just like his own pastor!!

VOTE HILLARY PEOPLE! even if you dont like her just vote hillary for the simple reason of "obama is full of shi**" and will say anything and everything he has to include diss his own black people by going so called white to get their votes!!

WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE YOU ARE BEING USED!!

VOTE CLINTON! AT LEAST SHE TRIED TO HELP THE BLACK PEOPLE WHEN HER HUSBAND WAS IN OFFICE!!

Obama having been raised by white...
grandparents has sought, in his adult life to become fully immersed in black life and culture. That is why he stayed in a church with a preacher spewing the black liberation gospel. "Everything wrong with the black community is the fault of white people." Obama would be a disaster as president.

Like it or not, but get it right
I don't expect a conservative like Gerson to like black theology, but I expect him to get it right. In particular, he recycles the same brief quotes from James Cone that have made the rounds for weeks, but shows little understanding of Cone's black theology. In particular, Gerson seems to think that it is merely "politics" to oppose racism. He doesn't imagine that just maybe Christianity is supposed to be opposed to racism, and that Christians are required to work against racism in deed as well as by means of prayer. Cone believes that Jesus is really on the side of slaves and the oppressed, and is not on the side of slavemasters. Cone's understanding of the teachings of both the Old and the New Testament is that, yes, there are things God dislikes, and there are people who act in ways that deserve God's judgment. Cone and other black thologians do not believe in 'replacement theology'--the idea that Christians can simply ignore the Old Testament. In the Old Testament God enters history and takes sides, punishing the wicked and rewarding the righteous. Cone thinks this should still matter for Christianity.
