Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

New scientific discoveries keep eating away at the prophecy that “bird flu,” avian influenza type H5N1, will become readily transmissible from human to human and unleash a disastrous pandemic. This leaves little but rhetoric to counter the reality, such as massive death estimates.

Typical is the oft-quoted one of University of Minnesota School of Public Health professor Michael Osterholm, who estimated 180-360 million deaths worldwide simply by extrapolating the estimated death toll from the Spanish flu of 1918-19 to today's world population.

Taking this to heart, neo-con novelist and essayist Mark Helprin has proposed spending 2.5 percent of the national budget, or about 1 percent of GDP, to counter the alleged threat. This when defense spending has gone up only 0.8 percent of GDP since 9/11 to fight the war on terror and two ground wars.

In any event Congress has already allocated $5.6 billion for avian flu, part of which is going to obnoxious “pandemic flu” ads from the CDC that pop up on you while using any software on your computer. That sure makes me feel safer.

Since I began writing on avian flu back in early 1998 and then during the more recent panic in 2005, I’ve driven the scare-mongers – most of them left-wing like the mega-blog Daily Kos – absolutely nuts by pointing out there’s no evidence for a pending pandemic.

The latest nail in the chicken coop comes from the lab of David Finkelstein and his colleagues at St. Jude Hartwell Center in Memphis, Tenn.

The researchers analyzed almost 10,000 avian H5N1 sequences and almost 14,000 human sequences, including those of seven dead Indonesians who apparently caught the virus from another human. They looked for specific amino acids either more likely to appear in human flu virus proteins or in avian virus proteins. In the journal Virology, they declared they found no sequence that even approached the mutations in the flu viruses that caused the three pandemics of the 20th Century, including Spanish Flu.

In all, they identified 32 clear-cut changes in influenza viruses that differentiated a human H5N1 strain from that in birds, yet none of the viral samples from humans had more than two of those changes. "We think they need to get to 13 [mutations] to be truly dangerous," Finkelstein told Reuters.  He characterized his finding as “reassuring.”

Will this affect media perceptions? Pshaw! “Doctors warn the H5N1 virus is dangerously close to mutating so that it would pass easily between humans – which could spark a global pandemic that could kill millions of people worldwide,” declared Voice of America News shortly thereafter. Space limitations prevented it from saying which doctors.

Last year, studies on ferrets, one of the few animals that can contract seasonal flu and H5N1, put the kibosh on the other way H5N1 could become pandemic – through what’s called recombination” or “reassortment.” This refers to the two types of flu “mixing” inside a human or another animal, creating a hybrid with possibly the worst traits of both.

When one set of ferrets was infected with both strains and then exposed to a second set,

none of the secondary ferrets contracted either a reassorted virus or even just H5N1. The scientists even used gene splicing to create a hybrid virus. Not only did the fabricated hybrids pass poorly between the animals, ferrets injected with the reassorted virus were less ill than those who received pure H5N1. Reassortment appears to have weakened the germ.

All of this also helps explain one of the least-known facts about H5N1. The strain’s discovery in poultry dates back not to 1997, as we’re constantly told, but rather to 1959 when it was identified in Scottish chickens.

In other words, we’ve been exposed to this thing for half a century and yet it’s refused to go pandemic.

Small increases in the counted numbers of bird-to-human cases over the last four years probably represent little more than better reporting. Yet virologist Robert Webster, perhaps the most respected of the alarmists, last November in the New England Journal of Medicine specifically cited the annual increases in bird-to-human H5N1 cases since 2002 as cause for alarm.

So what does it mean that, according to the WHO, throughout this year such cases have significantly lagged behind those of last year? You already know: “It’s even worse than we thought!”

Come on Mr Funemento:
We KNOW so much about this flu and how truely HORRIBLY it is and HOW MANY PEOPLE IT WILL KILL!

Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it can't. Or won't. It's like GLOBAL WARMING for goodness sake! We KNOW this is true cause AL BORE TOLD US SO!

All levity aside, I think a lot of the hubbub about the flu is just a cover up for *containment* of a biologic attack. But we don't want to talk about THAT! So, we pretend that it is for the FLU (wink, wink.)

science is illogical
today's science is not a pristine search for the truth but a tainted process.

global warming is one such hoax. it is pushed by the government control freaks that want a new source of money.

obesity - another man made crisis. no one want to acknowledge genetics. btw take a look at the professional athletes. most of them are overweight or obese. isn't it odd that the stereotypical 90 lb weakling is now the picture of health?

What Fumento fails tot ell you is that one of the reasons we have seen little mutation is because of the enormous effort by health organization to isolate birds with the flu and keep them away from the human population. We don't know how fast the needed mutations take to occur. The more exposure to bird flu, the more times the virus has a chance to mutate, and the greater the chance the virus could become more spreadable in the human population.

Also, Fumento doesn't mention that the 1919 flu epidemic was also a bird flu.

Of course, one expects this form someone who was fired by Scripps-Howard for non disclosure of a conflict of interest. Not surprised to see him on Townhall, though.

Thank you
health organization for your enormous efforts on this minor problem. My check is in the mail.

My Education
I learn so much from townhall:
1) Global warming is a hoax and the thousands of qualified scientists who warn about it are political tools, also fools.
2) A flu pandemic is a ridiculous idea.
3) (from an ad frequently appearing on townhall, for pages and pages) Licensed medical doctors are either well-meaning uninformed dopes or else money-mad crooks but, in either case, the patient should avoid them. Instead, he should seek consultation and treatment by email from the advertiser's panel of experts.

So now that my morning paper tells me that the cholera in Northern Iraq has reached Baghdad, any minute now I expect to hear that cholera is no big deal, just a little upset tummy (why do the leftist media exaggerate so?). The idea that Iraq's contaminated water supply is responsible is surely another leftist lie, and, in any case, townhall's advertiser will have a certain cure for cholera.

Americans Have Become Stupid
Every day more Americans believe idiot scare mongers while never asking them for the cold hard evidence behind their senarios.

This happens with evolutionists, truthers, global warming wacos, ad nosium.

With the state of our government schools, it is going to get worse. Liberals know they cannot get their way by telling people the truth. So they mask their agendas with cleches and generalities. And uneducated, unscientific American idiots buy into it.

We will be bankrupted by these hysterics if we as a nation don't seek the scientific evidence behind these frauds.

Remember all the scare tactics
about West Nile virus? It moved across the United States, like many other virus strains within populations of humans (carried by mosquitoes.) People got sick, +90% recovered without ever being really sick at all, and very rarely is this disease a big deal any more.
Yes, it still occurs, but not nearly in the drastic numbers that health departments, the government, and certain medical professionals scare-mongered everyone into thinking was absolutely true. Of course one has to wonder what will be the result of so many people slathering on chemicals (DEET to name one)night after night to keep the mosquitoes from biting them!

I had to laugh because every month or so our Director of Public Health gets in the paper promoting "pandemic preparation" among other varied scares, usually accompanied by "get vaccinated now" or "we are supporting efforts to get a vaccine made for the avian flu" etc. These same tactics were used on the voters to get them to pass a tax increase which would pay for a new multi-million dollar health department (and bioterrorism lab, ooohhh!) They couldn't be happy with a new building, it had to be "state of the art" for all those scary diseases that are just waiting to swoop in and kill massive numbers of people all at once. Give me a break.

Borneo, Lilly, other fools
Look around you. Are people dying from avian bird flu? No, but they MIGHT! Has the virus even mutated yet into a pandemic-class strain? No, but it COULD! Is it theoretically possible that a Spanish flu-type pandemic may be lurking just around the next blind corner? Absolutely! Wouldn’t it be just HORRIBLE if such a thing were to occur? Isn’t the suspense and horror of not knowing if, when and how horrible it might end up being just driving you mad with suspense? Yes! Yes! Yes!

Alfred Hitchcock once said “there is no terror in a bang, it is only in the anticipation of a bang.” Isn’t human nature an interesting phenomenon. Things can seem so real, yet be so illusory. The paralyzing fears of nightmares can seem so real in the dead of night, yet before noon of the next day they are completely forgotten. Likewise, the “daytime” nightmares of global cooling, population bombs, and worldwide famine have long since slipped from the minds of the emotionally fragile, only to be replaced by the new boogie men of even greater peril.

Never fear though, the impending nightmares of global warming and bird flu make are for real, and there will be no escaping them this time!

Scaremongering
I remember back in the 70's and 80's everything was supposed to be bad for you. You couldn't pick up a newspaper without reading about the "threat of the day". It got so ludicrous that an editorial cartoon came out when the scientists said coffee caused cancer. The cartoon showed a man screaming AAAAAHHH to the heavens when confronted with this last straw revelation. I won't say there are never any health or environmental threats. But I think many of us have been watching too many end-of-the-world disaster movies and have come to expect the extinction of the human race under every rock. Chill out people. Things aren't that bad. I too think this bird flu thing is overblown just like global warming.
