Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

His State of the Union address began with a focus on our government’s foremost responsibility -- national security. This, the first of many bold policy proposals, would reverse the debilitating effects of the generation-long “procurement holiday” that has plagued our military since we prevailed over Soviet Communism in 1991.

The solution: make it the stated policy of the U.S. Congress to adequately fund the “weapons systems, the armament, and the number of troops that we need to secure the nation.” That translates into committing no less than 4% of our gross domestic product each and every year on what Pentagon experts refer to as the “base” defense budget.

Turning to the economy, he set forth an exciting alternative vision to the economic stimulus proposal being railroaded through Congress. He urged lawmakers to make the tax system “predictable” by making the current tax rates, which are set to rise dramatically at the end of 2010, permanent.

But giving businesses certainty as to their future tax burden isn’t enough. We must enable U.S. businesses to compete in the global marketplace. In the U.S., Uncle Sam socks businesses with one of the world’s highest tax rates -- 35%, with state taxes adding, on average, another 5%. That combined 40% rate, he observed, “is running jobs offshore.”

Indeed, the latest survey of corporate tax rates in 92 countries confirms that we must radically overhaul the way we tax business profits. The accounting firm of KPMG found that the average worldwide rate has fallen from 38% as recently as 1993 to only 27% today. In the European Union, rates have plummeted even further; the average rate there now approaches 24%. Most alarmingly, as of Jan. 1 China, our second-largest trading partner, lowered its top rate to 25%. The solution: lower our corporate tax rate to 25% “so that we’ll at least be able to compete with Europe.”

He also demanded that Congress consider a fundamental overhaul of our tax code, one that would make it “simpler” and “more understandable.” This translates to an optional flat tax with a top rate of 25%.

His proposals to rein in runaway federal spending were similarly ambitious. Enact a balanced budget amendment that makes it impossible to raise taxes. End the pernicious congressional practice of earmarking thousands of special interest projects. And, perhaps most dramatically of all, “stop spending Social Security [taxes] on other things.” This last item questions the legitimacy of some $100 billion of unrelated, and wasteful, federal spending each year.

As if those reforms weren’t enough, he also proposed redirecting our health care system toward the consumer and making insurers actually compete for our business. To foster that competition, Congress must give individuals personal tax relief so they can purchase health plans on their own. And individuals must be allowed to choose any plan offered nationwide, rather than being restricted to what is offered in their (often over-regulated) home state.

Wow.

But, as Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat once put it: That is not all. Oh, no. That is not all.

He has lost patience with the “corrupt” and “anti-American” United Nations. According to a Heritage Foundation study, the U.N.’s pronounced anti-American streak reaches its pathological heights among those countries that receive the largest infusions of U.S. foreign and military aid. In fact, on important votes in the U.N. General Assembly the 30 largest aid recipients opposed the official U.S. position nearly 70% of the time. Economically free nations, in contrast, sided with Uncle Sam on these tough votes 72% of the time.

Congress, he said, must withhold the overly generous U.S. contribution to the U.N. until its leaders adopt a comprehensive list of financial and other.

By now, you may be wondering which State of the Union address I was watching. It wasn’t available on any of the networks. C-SPAN missed it, as did talk radio.

That’s because it was delivered by the chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). It’s available only on YouTube (seen, as of mid-day last Thursday, by more than 7,000 hardy souls) and was delivered from a dimly-lit perch in the Russell Senate Office Building immediately following the president’s address.

DeMint’s creative move in recording and posting his alternative State of the Union fills the vacuum many conservatives feel these days. They yearn for an all-encompassing and visionary agenda to prove that credible alternatives still exist to the pandering mentality that dominates Washington and gives us endless earmarks and lowest common denominator stimulus plans.

“Replay”? You bet.

Sounds good...
Why aren't any of the so-called "Republican" candidates making these proposals?

Oh, well, it's the party's loss, because I have vowed never again to vote for the lesser of two evils just to vote against the greater of two evils, because that's still voting for evil.

I'm going to find a candidate I like even if it means writing in Zippy the Pinhead.

Bottom falls out of US manufacturing

Bottom falls out of US manufacturing wages

From The Economic Populist: Along with the loss of -3.3 million Manufacturing jobs over the last seven years, a report just released by the BLS shows average hourly compensation for US Manufacturing jobs fell from the world’s 4th highest in 2000 to the world’s 14th highest in 2006. Japan’s Manufacturing jobs were the 2nd highest paid in 2000 but plunged to rank only 16th in 2006.

Germany, which had the world’s highest-paid Manufacturing workers in 2000 fell to second place behind Norway in 2006. Manufacturing jobs in the Euro-Area countries as a group paid far less than in the US and Japan in 2000 but paid far more in 2006.

The BLS data is in $US dollars at exchange rates current for each year.

Jorge's Budget Was Toast and Worthless
Toast because the Demo Congress has it's own version at to what will be funded. Worthless because it came from Jorge who doesn't value my money. Jorge has done two decent things in 7+ years - a tax cut and two judges. One of the judges is a replacement for Harriet Meirs. What a dunce! And as soon as I hear him talking, I switch channels for he is fingernails on a chalk board and I voted for him twice. Vote for McShame -- don't think so.

Another State of the Union Address
Everything I read makes perfect sense. The ear marks and social security spending jump to mind right away as a main issue.

National security and the military spending should be a must. Russia, China, and Iran are going to be countries we will need to counter with forces lage enough they will stick to diplomacy and not armed force. They are building war machines as fast as they can. Russia and Iran with oil money. China with export profits.

Standing up to the enviromentalist groups wasn't mentioned, but that also should be a must. Its tied into national security, oil. We need to tap all our untappd feilds, build nw refineries, and pipelines, and become a major producer. We are the only country in the world that can not tap our own resources.

Border Security is another issue that wasn't mentioned. Illegal immagration has got to be stoppd dead in its tracks. There is a terorrist issue, and the illegals are taking jobs away from honest Americans at a much cheaper rate of pay. Companies who hire them must receive very, very, stff penaltues, even jail sentences for breaking the law. Illegals contribute nothing to our society. They clog up our health care, education, public assistance programs, do not pay their fair share of taxes, and send the money they earn out of country, which means its not circulating in our economy. Its got to stop. LEGAL Immagration, is great. I am all for it. Learn English, speak and write it, learn our laws, our history, and our culture, and become one of us Americans. Illegal immagration is wrong. No one is doing anything about it.

America has some real tough issues to solve. We need leaders with workable plans.

The United Nations, those who vote against us 70% of the time, cut the aid off. Simple as that. Why aid our enemies? The Iraq oil for food program showed us all how corrupt they really are. From the top down. Its time to put on the breaks.

Mr. Franc
I see, that you have decided to become a member of the "ARMY" of journalist, who will attempt to frame this election in military terms. The saddest part about a prejudiced person, is their "COWARDICE".If Americans don't like a woman or minority as their President, then say so.But please don't hide behind issues, that play on the "FEARS" of others. In England, people are too sophisticated to be "DUPED" by the government, over and over again.Hopefully,in this election, the American people will show, that they "Fear" hate and prejudice more than LIES!

On the State of our Party
We began this election season with a large cast of candidates, including some true conservatives like Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter. Later in the process Fred Thompson joined the race, at least in theory. But when the dust settled Mitt Romney ended up with the mantle of the conservatives’ choice, why? Now I like Mitt, but his track record was spotty and it took a long time for the base to warm up to his as their man’ but he had the money to keep going when other more conservative candidates just couldn’t get traction, that made all the difference.

Yesterday Mitt dropped out of the race for the good of the party, and in truth for the good of the country if it means we have a better shot to get our act together and beat the Democrats in November.

Still, it’s a shame that the electorate doesn’t take more interest in vetting their candidates based on their actual records and positions rather than simply name recognition and race or gender preferences. Too many supporters simply go along with the crowd; they want to back a winner, regardless of their position on various complex issues. As a result we seem to pick leaders for superficial reasons because their easy to understand. In a democracy this lack of involvement will always insure the people obtain exactly the quality of government they deserve!

The Other State of the Union
YES! YES! YES!

If America is able to accomplish half of what you have described, there maybe hope for America after all.

U.S. force feeding Europe!
That was part of Paul Harvey's program, today: U.S. force feeding Europe our taxed dollars 2 BILLION dollars per day!!!!! Illegals will receive, in this latest spending incentive, more money than our Vets!?! Yep, we needed, also Romney's business experience. Darn! Very good article on De Mint, Michael. Thanks for getting it out in front of us.

Re Our National Security
Dear Mr. Franc:

If, as you state, "our government’s foremost responsibility" is national security, then why aren't you calling for the removal from office of Pres. Bush, whose record shows:

- Failure to implement national security measures recommended by the 9/11 Commission as evaluated in December 2005 by 9/11 Commission Chairman Tom Kean .

- Failure of Pres. Bush to honor his promise to the American people in Oct. 2002 to "'plan carefully" for the Iraq War which Mr. Bush portrayed as being vital to the security and survival of the our country..

-- Failure to honor his pre-Iraq War promise to employ the full might of the military to swiftly win a war Pres. Bush told us in 2002 was essential to preserve our nation's security and survival.

On Oct. 8, 2007, Town Hall columnist and National Review Editor Rich Lowry was moved to write: "The U.S. government has never brought to bear its resources in a truly national effort to win (the Iraq War)."

End Country Welfare

I think we need to end corporate welfare but sta in the UN with membership dues on a flat membership fee of our cost for office space and operations we conduct - let every other country pay for themselves.

What I find amusing is you are assuming DeMint is a conservative when he only has the politicl rhetoric down - and that was just before DeMint, Flake, Coburn and "the bald headed guy" turned over and gave up their principles.

Now the want us to put Flake on appropriations. Ha, ha, ha, ha. What a bunch of theives and liars. It is time to pull out of Iraq and let the Middle East settle it.

It is time to pull out of Afghanistan and let the EU deal or not deal with it. We have interceptors now for longrange missles so let India deal with a crumbling Pakistan.

Not our problems, never were and they aren't now. Time to pay out debt and get rid of a great majority of government on a Federal, State and Local level. If they aren't making progress on these goals look to you local party leadership, replace them and start over again.

This infection goes right down to YOUR neighborhood, your Representatives and mine.

The Other State Of the Union
Mr. Franc,
The Sen. whom you mentioned from S.C. is one of the few conservative republicans that we still
have, And that is why I voted for him,and will do so every time he runs for office. It is time to cut earmarks and to send the U N the message
that we will not play their games anymore.

America = Militaristic Imperialism
All grandiose speeches spewed out evermore by folks who should know better, are truly nothing but the regurgitation of speechs by folks who spoke in all past defunct Empires. There is only one individual that knows the difference, and that man is Ron Paul. Yet, all the rest of the Republican presidential aspirants are really nothing but followers of Emperor George W., who with the help of Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Rice, their best accomplishement has been to completely destroy and completely obliterate all that Ronald Reagan accomplished without firing a shot. Yes, while Ronald Reagan, at first thought that sticking is military nose into every corner of the world was necessary, he quickly learned otherwise and began using words rather than guns, hence the Soviet Union evaporated. Yes, if he had been immortatl and President for life, Russia and the USA would be the best of allies. Yes, he wanted a strong national defense, really as mandated by the Constitution, but never threatened other nations, while George W. each time he speaks he sounds like Mr. Hitler. No, he is not a Hitler, but his threats remind a one of them. Yes, Ron Paul speaks for the Founding Fathers, and has no use for Imperialism, period, and therefore honoring them to the fullest. This quote in closing: "Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty". By George Washington. America, its high time to obey him?
