Why the U.S. Should Listen to India's Voters

Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Last November, 131 million Americans voted, and the whole world took notice. Over the last month, about 700 million Indians voted, and most Americans, like most of the world, didn't much notice.

To be sure, American elections are more important to people all over the world than those in any other country. But the election in India is more important to Americans than most of us realize. Including, perhaps, our president.

This was not always so. During the Cold War, India was something of a de facto ally of the Soviet Union. This was due in part to our alliance with its rival neighbor Pakistan, but also to a feeling of solidarity with the U.S.S.R. on the part of the ruling Congress Party and its two historic leaders, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi.

The Congress vision of India was built on three pillars: socialism, autarky and secularism. Socialism meant a government-driven economy policed by a Permit Raj -- government bureaucrats had to approve every economic change. Autarky meant cutting India off from world trade, so that local industries could grow. Secularism meant toleration of religious diversity in a nation with both a large Hindu majority and the world's second-largest Muslim population.

The fall of the Soviet Union removed two of these three pillars. Manmohan Singh, then finance minister and now prime minister, began dismantling the Permit Raj. Successive governments led by the Congress Party and the Hindu nationalist BJP opened up India to trade, and export industries grew. Secularism remained, embraced by the Congress and not entirely repudiated by the BJP.

With the de facto alliance with the Soviets defunct, India was now open to an American alliance. Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to visit India in years. George W. Bush moved further, cultivating closer ties with India and signing and getting ratified a nuclear cooperation treaty.

It became obvious that we had much in common. Both countries have a large and capable military, both have nuclear weapons, both have electoral democracies and English common law traditions, and both are prime targets of Islamist extremists. After Sept. 11, when Pakistan's Gen. Pervez Musharraf made a U-turn and promised to help the United States in Afghanistan, he did so in the awareness that the United States had a friend on the other side of his border.

India also has the potential to contain the power of China, in conjunction with other well-armed democracies around its periphery -- Japan, South Korea and Australia. Its economy has been growing almost as fast as China's, and it now has a middle class of perhaps 200 million people.

The election held over four weeks in April and May has produced a result very much to our advantage. The Congress Party has been returned to power with a larger share of the vote than indicated by pre-election and exit polls and will no longer need Communists and left-wingers for majorities in the Lok Sabha. The BJP attacked Congress for being too close to the United States; voters evidently decided that this was not a minus but a plus.

All of which puts the ball in Barack Obama's court. He has scarcely mentioned India in public since he became president, even as he has been making emollient noises to the mullah regime in Iran. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, said publicly she wouldn't object to China's abuses of human rights, while India has worked hard to uphold human rights.

The United States is preoccupied with the turmoil inside Pakistan, as well as with Pakistan's problematic role in the fight against the Taliban. But building closer relations with India would give us more leverage in Islamabad. Clinton, who played a constructive role in her husband's outreach to India, should understand this. Perhaps Obama does, too.

But it's hard to tell. Obama has continued military operations in Iraq and stepped them up in Afghanistan, but otherwise he is banking heavily on the proposition that he can persuade those who have been our sworn enemies that they should be our friends. Maybe that will work. But in the meantime, it would not hurt to show some solicitude for our friends in India, with whom we share strategic interests and moral principles. The 700 million voters of India have chosen to be our ally. We should take them up on it.

yes
yes, indeed.

Clinton's constructive role...
... geez, I missed all that... as I'm missing Obama's persuasiveness with our enemies. I sorta was coming to the conclusion that the country is being shepherded among nations by an old gas-bag whose claim to fame was being jilted for a hefty intern and not baking cookies, and a younger gas-bag whose claim to leadership is tossing grandmothers and racist pastors under buses.

But if Barone wants to pretend for the moment that this pair actually has some diplomatic ability, I guess I can pretend along with him that there's some ray of hope bouncing around out there somewhere. India, maybe.

BJP more pro-Israel, pro-USA than Cong
Just to make it clear BJP is actually way closer the American conservatives and Republican Party, and in terms of being closer to the US govt, both parties are equally supportive of US govt. BJP way more supportive of Israel.

Congress when it was in power last time with the support of Left parties and the communists had to face a lot of opposition for supporting USA. This election their power has been greatly reduced, which is a good news.

Congress is slowly coming out as Pro-USA, but I hardly think India should hold any expectations with Obama government.

I'm with you PB
The only reason BHO or any Clinton made any good military move is that a General sat down with him/her and taught a few facts of life. The enemies will still shrewdly exploit their naive pacifism.

o and the u.s. gov't
agreeing with India? I do believe in ghosts, I do believe in ghosts. If we say it enough it will be true, right? Even in the face of facts that say otherwise. Apparently coolaid is mass marketed to supposedly conservative writers and they are drinking it nonstop. o is about o and he is a muslim. Just because India is moving toward a republic doesn't mean we are not moving toward socialism/dictatorship. Doesn't it trouble anyone that its necessary to prove that o is for America, anything that is noble(rights of the unborn), fiscal responsibility, personal integrity? All of these things and more are called into question by his actions since taking office. I know they were questioned during the campaign, but now they are being proved. What would your game plan be if your goal was world domination via a pseudo republic/now democracy/soon to be socialist state? He is slicker than all the talking heads, commentators and an increasing number of the general public. Has anyone been able to correctly guess his next move? No. He's got a big picture and all the world is fodder for his goal. He even intends to be head of all muslims. He is a master manipulator and has already proven that he is not to be taken lightly. You can't read the handwriting on the wall because you are abysmally ignorant of Holy Scripture. Professing yourselves to be wise you became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for mere images, like a mortal human being, or like birds, animals or reptiles. And God so gives you up to the vileness of your hearts' lusts, to the shameful misuse of each others bodies. You have exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, by worshipping and serving created things, rather than the Creator.
Repent, if you still can.

Politics
Don't forget India's lost half century (1947-1991) because of Socialist Big Government (owns all financial services companies, controls automotive markets, owns airlines, railroads etc etc). In 1991 India was BANKRUPT, and the then Finance Minister and current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had to trade tons of Gold to allow India to finance its foreign trade. He of course opened India to free markets, reduced the top tax rate from 90% to 37%, eliminated the Estate Tax and in general allowed India to start growth. Both the Congress Party as well as the BJP are after all comprised of Political Cabals and want to maintain CONTROL. But the fact that the Leftist Communists & Socialists have been turned away is a move in the right direction.

Too bad the American voters did not turn away the Socialist Big Government proponents in the Democratic Party during the November 2008 election. We may be starting our own dark half century.

AMERICA'S DEATH WISH

.....It is not an accident that AMERICA went from an untamed wilderness to the World's greatest industrial power in just 300 years ...with the greatest gains being made between 1865 and 1900 ...this phenomenon was the direct result of free market CAPITALISM ...

.....But for the last 100 years PROGRESSIVES in WASHINGTON have been trying to harness the FREE MARKET to serve the will of GOVERNMENT ...

.....AMERICA was founded by individuals who yearned to be free of the yoke of EUROPEAN FEUDALISM but a new generation of AMERICANS see EUROPE as the model for a "NEW" AMERICA ...

I believe we've failed, at least since Reagan, to challenge the over-reaching of the national government in the White House and in the courts. Reagan caved to the democrats and signed their budget, I guess to ensure he got the tax cuts he wanted. So did Bush I and Bush II - and Bush II had his party in congress, yet still couldn't say "NO." Only once in my memory have conservatives challenged legislation in court - the line-item veto of all things.

The left has the ACLU challenging conservative programs or cuts at every turn, but for some inexplicable reason, the right has not returned the favor. I think that much of the expansion of the federal government, at least since FDR, has been constitutionally suspect, and certainly this latest round of bailouts - supported by both parties - is beyond the pale. Where are the Taxpayers Union's lawyers? Where are the Citizens Against Government Waste's lawyers? Why aren't fiscally conservative groups and lawyers coming forward and challenging this horrific overreaching of the federal government?

How about starting with the public schools which are controlled by the liberals?

Why the U.S. Should Listen to India's Voters

****
I beg your pardon. Isn't that something like
bowing to a Saudi Prince? Isn't that something
like being nice to someone who is supposed to
be our enemy. Besides, why should we listen
to India about anything? They are too dark,
and short.

Henry
"How about starting with the public schools which are controlled by the liberals?"

***
Public Schools are controlled largely by their
communities. They must follow guidelines (hence so many are going to homeschooling -
who the H needs guidelines). But the local
community is the one most responsible for what
goes on in their schools.

I mostly object to the headline
America should not listen to anyone - but the taxpayers.

"But for the last 100 years PROGRESSIVES in WASHINGTON have been trying to harness the FREE MARKET to serve the will of GOVERNMENT ..."

****
Stick to baseball. Let smart guys handle the
government.

Ok, I don't know who the Progressives are or what their purpose is, but in this last election the voters said - we are sick and
tired of the free market making us poorer and
the CEO's and other mucky mucks vastly, vastly richer. And so we voted for Obama.
But before he was elected that house of cards
- and greed - came tumbling down taking with
it not only the economic system of the home
of the free and the brave but darn near every
other country in the world that had any assets
to loose or depreciate.

Unchecked power under any 'ism or under any
one person or under any one group is always a
threat to the freedom and well being of the
rest.

Why haven't you caught on to that yet?

Tammy
Just exactly which federal agency would you hold up as a model of economic efficiency that promises to provide wealth-creating jobs and first quality products and services?

Public schools controlled by their
communities?

Teachers fully indoctrinated by liberal university educations promote global warming without question, preach Howard Zinn's anti America history of this country as the gospel truth, take 2nd graders on a field trip to a gay marriage and call it a learning experience, call anyone who is anti illegal immigration a xenophobic racist. In short the public schools of this country are part and parcel of the Dem party. Teachers represented a very large percentage of the delegates at the big O's coronation aka Dem convention.

How do you think CA ended up with the highest paid teachers in the country with just about the lowest results? The Dems in concert with public school teachers have run this once great state into a socialist hellhole with unemployment in my county at 12% and rising.

CA is a land long run by the Dems and like that other Dem controlled state outhouse IL provides a preview of what the rest of this country can expect!

Jag CA
"Teachers fully indoctrinated by liberal university educations promote global warming without question, preach Howard Zinn's anti America ... blah blah blah"

****

Oh pah-leez. Don't be so dumb and so boring.

Teachers teach science. Yes, not the Bible,
not Rush Limbaugh, science. But considering
how old many textbooks are, they probably
haven't reached the era of "global warming"
yet.

Teachers teach going green. Teachers have
since learned the truth about history. When
I was in school - I did not learn the truth.
If it didn't sound like America was perfect,
it was ignored. You tell me - the most powerful nation in the world never uses its
power for not-good. Do you believe that
statement? If you do, you are the most
gullible person in the United States and lets
hope you are not a teacher, not even of your
own children.

It is not the job of the federal government
to create jobs for the American people. It
has the job of protecting us from creeps who
decide that our needs don't count. It is the
job of the federal government to first recognize and then act upon the assumption that government is for the benefit of its
citizens - all citizens; not just the wealthy.

Dumb and boring are Tammy's
middle names.

You've been drinking kos kool aid way to long Tammy.

Do you really believe that a man who sat for a
quarter of a century in a church that taught blacks are captives in this country, that white America has designed a society to kill and/or imprison blacks has any moral standing whatsoever? Barack Obama claimed discipleship to a preacher of Black victim hood and white evil to advance his sorry political career.

Barack and Michelle would shout Amen to the vilest falsehoods about America when they thought it would gain them political power. They are amoral!

Tammy Writes
"It has the job of protecting us from creeps who decide that our needs don't count. It is the job of the federal government to first recognize and then act upon the assumption that government is for the benefit of its
citizens - all citizens; not just the wealthy."

And which passage in the Constitution do you believe covers this responsibility? Which "needs" are enumerated in that passage? Which agency determines the threshold of those "needs"? And where does it say the federal government has the authority to seize the property of one to provide for the "needs" of another? What is the threshold for "too much" so that the federal government can properly determine "greedy" versus "industrious" and "ambitious"?

If someone is willing to work 72 hours a week after earning an advanced degree in some specialty, or if he mortgages his property to start a business, is he not entitled to the fruits of his labor or risk over and above the low-skilled 40-hour-a-week wage earner?

If someone is willing to put herself through school, acquire a specialized skill, forgo marriage and childbearing until she has amassed enough wealth to live comfortably before having children, should she have her property and wealth seized to compensate the woman who has several children, no husband, and no skills? Which one of these women would describe as greedy? The one who was prudent and asks no one to supplement her income or the one who expect society to bail her out for her poor choices?

Tammy - Typos Corrected
Which one of these women would YOU describe as greedy? The one who was prudent and asks no one to supplement her income or the one who EXPECTS society to bail her out for her poor choices?

How is it possible that American education declined one grade every 20 years?

Tammiest
.
You would be funny or uneducated if you weren't so damn sure of yourself.

You are drinking Kool Aid girl, and lot's of it.

We, I, don't hold against you your grossly deficient education. Couldn't be that your intellect could rise above the falsity of your P.P. education. Could it.??.

The whole of Asia is poised to
befriend the U.S. All we need do is dump our farm subsidies, which we should do for the good of all anyway. Farmers are welfare queens in John Deere hats.

JUST ANOTHER JONES
Brilliant post. Well stated, great points. I've never really thought of it in that light, but what a great way to portray greed. So, so true to.

A large
economically sound democracy supporting American interests in a foreign country?

Watch Barack Obama in the next three and one half years do everything he can to hurt India and wreck our newly forged allegiance with this important ally.

If it can help (in the traditional sense) American interests, it must be destroyed.

Greg
There are plenty of disputes with the US and Asian countries that have nothing to do with farm subsidies. The biggest issue between China and the US is Taiwan and then there is the question of the IPR issue and the value of the Yuan.

BJP
"BJP more pro-Israel..."

Since they are Hindu nationalists and hate the Muslims this is a true statement.

Tammy and fantasty
One person couldn't be as goofy as Tammy. It must take a committee.

The schools indoctrinate they do not teach. Teachers in K-12 are programed in the education departments. They do not earn a 4 year degree in science, math, history, etc. This feeble system produces teachers only know subject matter that is in their textbooks.

TAMMY - SMART LIKE YOU?

.....Explain America's growth between 1850 and 1900 before Teddy ...the first Progressive began confiscating land and attacking industrialists who he called "Robber Barons" ...

.....Other Progressives include Woodrow Wilson and FDR ...I hope this seeps into your feeble brain ...if brains were dynamite you wouldn't have enough to muss your hairdo ...

.....May a swarm of stinging wasps nest in your anal orifice for all eternity .....COLOSSUS

India has 1.5 billion people
The point of Barone's article is that the USA needs to cultivate India as an ally. The USA and India have much in common. We need friends in the world and a democracy like India with over a billion citizens could be a big help and partner.

few comments on point
about India, and its recent election. This either shows xenophobia, or just the usual insular ignorance of my fellow Americans.

The recent election in India is great news. The BJP was aiding and abetting persecution of innocent Christians in India.

No change in 63 years

At the dock in Calcutta, India (March 1946) I saw a very good example of the value of some human life, or at least the value of their labor. There was a huge concrete slab, most likely a quarter to a half mile square, and 12 or 15 inches thick. They were in the process of removing that slab.

A line of hundreds, or maybe thousands, of very small Indian men dressed only in loin cloths, shoulder to shoulder, squatted on their heels. In one hand was a small chisel, and in the other a small hammer. At a very slow pace, they would lift the hammer and let it drop on the chisel, and to the sounds of “…tink, tink, tink, …” a small puff of dry cement would appear, sometimes.

Every once in a while a little piece of concrete would come loose, and be brushed back between their legs. Behind them were other tiny, scrawny men who would slowly pick up each fleck of concrete and place it in a small basket. At best they removed an inch or two of the slab each day.

One of the men, who seemed to be in charge, said this was just the way jobs like this were done in India. With machinery the job could be done in a short time, but this provided jobs for thousands of men for months and months!

I also watched the police in the morning. As they walked the street they kicked bodies laying on the sidewalk. If the body didn’t than move, they picked it up and threw it in the truck, for the trip to the river.

From what I saw on NBC a week ago, the story about the kids in that new movie don’t live any better today. The video of their so-called homes, was unbelievable, and since then the news reported that what they had as a home, has by now been bulldozed by the Government.

As an 18 year, 1 week old kid in ’46, (18th birthday in Singapore harbor) and as an 81 year old grunt today, I just can’t understand how or why that continues. Saturate all of their food with birth control, or something.

Tolerance of Religious beliefs

Liberals could learn a lot from India.

Coach and Tammy
Coach: excellent point; cultivate those trade alliances and reap the harvest before someone else does, as they surely will. Electric power generation leads the way in any developing country.

Tammy: JustAnotherJones has you pegged. Try responding without resorting to name-calling or other childish claptrap. Obama hasn't run anything other than a campaign - how would he know how to generate (or "save") jobs?
