Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It's starting to feel like the general election. Rising to claim victory in the Wisconsin Republican primary before the networks could declare Barack Obama the winner on the Democratic side, John McCain started right in on his general election opponent.

He promised to "make sure Americans are not deceived by an eloquent but empty call for change that promises no more than a holiday from history and a return to false promises and failed policies of a tired philosophy that trusts in government more than the people."

Scorch. Some 40 minutes later, Hillary Clinton got up before the cameras and set out her platform as if she were the winner, ignoring Obama as she had on primary night the week before. Having not been extended this courtesy, Obama did not extend her the courtesy of waiting for her to finish before he began his victory speech.

The networks quickly switched for Clinton to Obama, who went on for 45 minutes, cutting and pasting platform planks into the unspecific ode to hope that has enchanted so many voters.

That camera switch may turn out to be the beginning of the end of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. She's still hoping for victories in Ohio and Texas on March 4, but Obama's margin in Wisconsin makes that seem less likely, and in any case, she will still be behind in delegates. She could win the nomination only with the votes of super-delegates or by counting the results in Florida and Michigan, where the national party commanded candidates not to compete.

Either move will strike many Obama enthusiasts -- and others -- as profoundly unfair. The way Clinton has run her campaign -- like the way she ran health care reform in 1993-94 -- undercuts her claim to be ready for the presidency from day one. In both cases, she had no fallback strategy, no Plan B, in case her best-case scenario failed to come to pass. She started campaigning in Wisconsin only last Saturday and had to cancel her events because of a snowstorm. Didn't anyone check weather.com?

If you look at the numbers, if the general election were held today, Barack Obama would beat John McCain by a solid margin. (McCain would beat Clinton -- another reason the super-delegates are unlikely to foist her on the party.) But the performances of the candidates on primary night -- and the performances of their wives on Monday and Tuesday -- suggests that may not always be the case.

Obama's cut-and-paste job does respond to the complaint that he is without substance. But it's hard to mix poetry and prose and come up with an appealing product. Particularly when, as columnist Robert Samuelson points out, there's not much that's interesting about the substance.

Then there are the wives. In Milwaukee on Monday, Michelle Obama, who has spoken frequently in the campaign, said: "Hope is making a comeback, and let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

For the first time in her life? Coming from the realm in which Michelle Obama has lived her adult life -- Princeton, Harvard Law, a top law firm, a $342,000-a year job doing community relations for the University of Chicago hospital system -- this may not sound out of the ordinary. As Samuel Huntington has pointed out, people in this stratum tend to have transnational attitudes -- all nations are morally equal, except maybe for ours, which is worse.

This is not, to say the least, the view of most Americans, including very many who regularly vote Democratic. And it undercuts Barack Obama's most appealing rhetoric, which emphasizes what Americans have in common.

Cindy McCain, who ordinarily doesn't speak in public, picked up on this immediately. On Tuesday, she made a point of saying, several times, that she has always been proud of America. On election night, John McCain said he was "proud, proud of the privilege" of being an American.

I remember the electric feeling in the hall, at the first Republican National Convention I attended, in 1984, when Lee Greenwood belted out his country hit, "I'm proud to be an American." I don't believe that I've heard it at any Democratic National Convention, and I'm pretty sure that some nontrivial number of the delegates would find it off-putting, even obnoxious.

Barack Obama has explained that his wife was just saying that she was proud for the first time of her country's politics. But that's not what she said, and said with considerable emphasis. Tuesday night seemed to be the beginning of the general election campaign. But what was said on Monday may prove to be just as important.

Tom says:
"New Fact of Life
Defeat America -- Vote Democratic "

I'm sorry, Tom - remind the class which party held the White House and Congress on 9/11?

Did I hear Republican?

Right - so the correct answer is: Vote Republican - maybe al Qeada will attack again!

On the subject of illegal aliens...
I propose that the U.S. adopt Mexico's immigration laws exactally as they are written. Barring that, I propose that current laws aimed at employers who knowing hire illegals be enforced to the maximum.

New Fact of Life
Defeat America -- Vote Democratic

Oath of Office? Worthless
It requires that an elected official to uphold the Constitution. The majority of elected officials in Washington routinely break this Oath by moving toward amnesty rather than defending our borders.

Okay, when 10s of millions of illegals cross our borders, is this not an invasion? Increasingly, we are hearing and reading about Mexican Army vehicles crossing our borders. Is this not an invasion?

Constitution - Article 4
Section 4. The United States shall guarantee every State in this Union a Republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against *Invasion*...

Folks along our Southern borders don't seem to feel very protected against an invasion that they experience daily.

Is breaking one's Oath of Office an impeachable offense? Or is it just a matter of form that can be ignored at will?

So if McCain goes on national television and admits that he made a mistake on McCain Feingold we should not believe him.I wish pols would admit to their mistakes, then I would have more faith in them.

Michelle
I assure you that there will be VERY few uneducated voters that will vote for someone else because of what Michelle Obama said about when she became proud. Those would vote for him anyway...

The educated will not vote for Obama because he is so wrong about so many things....

The others don't have any excuse. You can be educated and still be Stupid!

for Virginia Patriot
Virginia Patriot,
McCain does not want your vote.

Because your vote would come at an unacceptably high price.

To get your vote, McCain would have to flip-flop on issues on which he is already on the record. And he would have to suddenly, out of the clear blue, reinvent himself as a hard-core right-winger, a nativist.

That's exactly what Romney tried to do, reinvent himself as a right-winger by flip-flopping as often as necessary--and look where it got him.

wow
some of you posters are just nuts.

for the record. VIRGINIA PATRIOT, your vote is not needed, and you are not even close to a patriot. however patriot is kinda close to pathetic in spelling, and pathetic fits you very well.

to those predicting a dem landslide because Mac is to the left of Mussolini, grow up.

Letterman on McCain
How come every time I see a picture of McCain he is standing with some old white politician older than him? David Letterman ha capitalized on McCain and there is more to come.....

Yes, and Yes.

All hell brakes out against Lady Obama!
Yes, by conservatives while Mr. God Bill O'reilly, who claims to know it all, uses the word lynch in his accusation of her? John Doe - On ''Tranzi trash''
--
Interesting. Are you a Ringo reader, perchance?

Been to the Bar lately?

--
"One of the difficult things about analyzing Tranzis and their works is that they are *not* a conspiracy. What they are is a consensus. Don't be contemptuous; civilization is nothing more than a consensus. So is barbarism. Moreover, the Tranzis are a fairly cohesive consensus, especially on certain ultimate core issues. Nonetheless, if you are looking for absolute logical consistency on the part of Tranzis you will search in vain.

"On the other hand, at the highest level, the ultimate Tranzi goal, there is complete agreement. They want an end to national sovereignty and they want global governance by an unelected, self-chosen 'elite.' Much of what they say and do will make no sense, even in Tranzi terms, unless that is borne in mind.

"Below that ultimate level one cannot expect tactical logical consistency. Things are neither good nor bad, true nor false, except insofar as they support the ultimate Tranzi goal.
For example, if one were to ask a Tranzi, and especially a female and feminist Tranzi, about the propriety of men having any say over a woman's right to an abortion the Tranzi would probably be scandalized. After all, men don't even have babies. They know nothing about the subject from the inside, so to speak. Why should they have any say?

"Nonetheless, that same Tranzi, if asked whether international lawyers and judges, and humanitarian activist nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, should have the final say in the laws of war, would certainly approve. This is true despite the fact that the next lawyer, judge or NGO that understands as much about war as a man understands about childbirth will likely be the first.

"Why do we say they know nothing about the subject? By their works shall you know them."

-- John Ringo, Tom Kratman; *Yellow Eyes* (2007)

Does the GOP Want To Survive?

It's really up to Little Johnny. If he wants our votes, he has to earn them.

He said he heard us after the last amnesty fight. He heard two things right. We want the border secured and we don't trust them. There apparently was alot he didn't hear.

He hired Juan Hernandez, who represents foreign nationals illegally in our country as his hispanic outreach, instead of reaching out to someone from "You Don't Speak For Me" a group of citizens of hispanic descent who oppose illegal aliens.

He said a couple of weeks ago he would sign McCain/Kennedy if it were put on his desk.

If he wants my vote, there are a couple of things he could do.
1. Publicly dismiss and disavow Juan Hernandez and the Reconquista for which he stands.
2. Apologize for conspiring in secret with La Raza and Ted Kennedy and trying to jam amnesty down our throats.
3. Pledge to veto ANY amnesty bill.
4. Pledge to enforce the laws, including deportation, which is the penalty for illegal aliens.

It's up to Sen. McCain, he can represent the interests of American citizens and uphold the rule of law or he can continue to court the favor of liberals and illegal aliens.

I will not vote for the latter.

...of the CFR and attended the Bilderberg 2007 meeting in Turkey. Barone, can you let us in on the secret agendas of these organizations. Speaking of wives - here is an excerpt from the 1985? thesis of Michelle Obama: she pointed out that Princeton (at the time) had only five black tenured professors on its faculty, and its "Afro-American studies" program "is one of the smallest and most understaffed departments in the university." A common response, no? Were there more tenured professors in the studies of German-America, Australian-America, India-America, Antartic-America, Canary Island-America? And McCain's trophy wife - call in the Breck Boy Edwards' hair guy. She needs a do-over. And Bubba the wife of Hillary - he needs a straitjacket to keep his finger outta people's faces and more makeup, as his real face is showing.

Cindy McCain is proud
Cindy McCain has a lot to be proud of. She picked up a famous, dimm-witted pilot and got her daddy to buy him a seat in the House and then in the Senate!

Ain't America great!

senor barone
i recognize the right of political hyperbole. i understand the tendency for the left to view america as having a long tail of corruption and evil, not liberty and independence. mrs obama's statement about the lack of her previous pride was certainly not lawyerly smart. however, if you were there when she said it, and later politely inquired "do you mean to imply that there is nothing in your lifetime that has occurred in the USA that stirs pride in your heart?" we all know that her response would be to narrow her poorly stated scope to the political. while that alone is questionable, there is no reason to use the literal to erase the contextual solely so you can have a molehill mountain to publish. got it dude\?

McCain Knocks Bush Signing Statements

I agree!

WP-Sen. John McCain criticized President Bush today for his practice of issuing signing statements that suggest the president will ignore elements of the bills he had signed into law, saying he “strongly disagreed” with the practice.

“My view is Congress passes it, you veto it or you enforce it,” McCain told reporters traveling on his campaign bus. “That’s the way you do it and that’s the way previous presidents have done it as well.”

Asked if he would ever consider issuing a signing statement as president, McCain was emphatic: “Never, never, never, never. If I disagree with a law that passed, I’ll veto it.”

Politics as usual
Those who dream of a Republican victory in November better hope the party elite and the far right media drop the phony "not proud" thing.

Nothing fuels Obama's candidacy more than the disgust of the petty politics of the last twenty years.

Transnationals (Tranzis)
people in this stratum tend to have transnational attitudes -- all nations are morally equal, except maybe for ours, which is worse.

This is the definition of Tranzi Trash. Michelle Obama better STFU shut up before she blows it for Hussein Obama.
