Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There seems to have been a change in the political winds. Theyve been blowing pretty strongly against George W. Bush and the Republicans this spring and early this summer. Now, their velocity looks to be tapering off or perhaps shifting direction.

When asked what would affect the future, the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan famously said: Events, dear boy. Events. The event this month that I think has done most to shape opinion was the arrest in London on Aug. 9 of 23 Muslims suspected of plotting to blow up American airliners over the Atlantic.

The arrests were a reminder that there still are lots of people in the world -- and quite possibly in this country, too -- who are trying to kill as many of us as they can and to destroy our way of life. They are not unhappy because we havent raised the minimum wage lately or because Bush rejected the Kyoto Treaty or even because were in Iraq.

Theyve been trying to kill us for years, going back at least to 1983, when a Hezbollah suicide bomber killed 241 American servicemen in Lebanon. Then they attacked the World Trade Center, the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the USS Cole in Aden -- all while Bill Clinton was president. Sept. 11 woke us up to the threat. The political acrimony of 2004 and 2005 and this year made it seem remote. The London arrests reminded us its still there.

Weve had other reminders, too. For four years, Hollywood has seemed mostly uninterested in the war on terrorism -- in vivid contrast to its enlistment in World War II.

But this year, weve seen the release of "United 93," and, in "World Trade Center," Oliver Stone presents us not with one of his conspiracy theories but, instead, a story of heroism. On Sept. 10 and 11, ABC will devote six hours of prime time to "The Path to 9-11," a fast-paced, bracing docudrama that tells the story of the terrorists and the people who tried to stop them, from the first WTC bombing in 1993 to 9-11 itself. And this will be only one of many commemorations of the fifth anniversary.

As it happens, the London arrests came almost exactly 24 hours after antiwar candidate Ned Lamont, flanked by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, claimed victory over Sen. Joseph Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic primary. The Lamont victory -- and the rejection of the partys 2000 vice presidential nominee -- sharpened the contrast between the two major parties.

One, it seems, would withdraw from Iraq as soon as possible without regard for the consequences -- an initially popular position for those who consider our effort there either misbegotten or hopelessly bungled. The other, it seems, would stay the course until we achieve our goals -- one that may become more acceptable if people come to think that withdrawal would not make us safe. The London arrests seem to have accelerated this thought process.

Polls since the London arrests suggest what has been happening. Bushs job approval was up significantly in the Gallup Poll, usually the most volatile of national polls, and the Democratic margin in the generic question (Which partys candidate for the House would you vote for?) was sharply reduced. There was a similar trend in generic vote in the Rasmussen poll, which is ordinarily much less volatile than Gallup.

Connecticut polls showed Lieberman, running as an independent, ahead of Lamont, with Lamont having strikingly high negatives for a candidate with such limited public exposure. It seems to be a fact -- remember the Paul Wellstone funeral in 2002? -- that when most Americans see the hard left of the Democratic Party in action, they dont much like what they see.

Of course, they dont like to see violence in Iraq, either.

But the sectarian killings that flared up in Baghdad in June and July have been reduced -- by 30 percent, says ABC News -- by intensive patrolling by U.S. and, more importantly, Iraqi troops. Its not clear, of course, whether the reductions will continue. Other threats still exist, like Irans nuclear program.

Earlier this summer, I thought that voters had decided that the Republicans deserved to lose but were not sure that the Democrats deserved to win, and that they were going to wait, as they did in the 1980 presidential and the 1994 congressional elections, to see if the opposition was an acceptable alternative. Events seem to have made that a harder sell for Democrats. A change in the winds.

Big Spending RINOs
I agreed the Democrats do not deserve to win anything. However, if the choice is to continue to allow George Bush and his free spending big government RINOs to stay in office and continue to do nothing about illegals, I will not support them. I have decided to vote against all incumbents (state and federal)except for my local Federal House Rep.

Austin and Lydia
I respectfully disagree. At this time in our history we don't want open border, socialist, Clinton lovers in power.

We can't always have everything we want, we DO need to vote in more conservative republicans.

Bush is the right man for the job, at this moment in history. He has kept our country safe since 9-11.

Let's be sane- we don't want the Clinton era back when radical terrorists want us all dead, and their flag waving over the White House!

Bush has kept his word and appointed conservative justices, which is a critical element we were counting on. On social issues he has been staunchly Conservative.

Let's not throw it all away. Let's stay the course and get more Republicans in, and hold their feet to the fire when neccessary.

We must get more conservatives in the House and
Senate, so the next Republican president can get more of our agenda passed.

Let's not send our enemies the wrong message. Stay the course, vote Republican!

We need more not fewer Republicans
in answer to Sheila I have to agree 100%. I am not happy with our situation now but the answer is more Republicans, not more Democrats. We have seen too much damage done by the failure of Congress to overcome the stoppages caused by the Democrats in both houses, but especially in the Senate. We can do so much more to improve situations if we get fewer Democrats to block anything that may help Bush look good as that is all they seem to want to do.

Bush has been willing to be unpopular with the people in order to try to do the right thing, especially in Iraq. We must have more Republicans to aid the next Republican president in doing the things that need to be done.

Michael Barone said:

I don’t know if the slip was intentional or not. But Bill Clinton was president from 1993 to 2001. Any terrorist attacks before 1993 were under Reagan or Bush I. This is just a technicality to be fair and honest.

However, I agree with the overall tone of his message that there are Muslims in the world that want to kill us. Therefore, if is in our best interests to deny them that opportunity now and under and and all future presidents.

Lydia and Austin
The time to get conservatives on the ticket is not at the general election, but at primary time. The primaries are where the platform is formed, by the candidates we are willing to run for offices, be they local, state, or federal. Too much of the timem though, we simply vote for the person we know at primary time and don't take time to find out what their challengers are all about. So if the Reagan revolution has been lost, it was not the national GOP that did it, it was us at the grassroots. Don't forget, Reagan was never the darling of the national GOP that everyone thought he was, he was the darling of the VOTERS!

And give W a break, okay? He never claimed to be a Reagan conservative, we voters simply wished him to be. Had we looked at his record as Governor of Texas, we would have seen that he was more his father's son, not a son of the Reagan revolution. Again, it comes down to the voters and who they vote for. We can't wait for the GOP to give us choices we like, especially when we have the power to choose for ourselves.

Wishful thinking
Michael Borone seems to be almost hoping for another terrorist attack on the US so that Republicans will get a boost in the polls.

But people aren't buying it anymore. Bush isn't keeping us safe, he's turning the United States into the most reviled country on the planet.

There is indeed a difference between the two parties: one party is unwilling to admit that Iraq has been an unmitigated FIASCO (read the book) and wants to keep diggin the hole deeper, and the other party sees that this adventure is doomed and we need to start thinking about how to cut our loses and save some face.

One party wants to remain in office so they can continue to rob the treasury and thumb their noses at the Constitution, the other party wants genuine oversight.

I know who I'm voting for.

Phylo out.

Petty Theft
Would the wise guy who stole the apostrophes from Mr. Barone's article please restore them?

TWO SIDES OF BUSH
Stinky is right when saying that Bush was willing to be unpopular with the people to do what was right. For the scary times that this country is currently facing, Bush Texas style of handling the terrorist has been a saving grace for this country in the fight against the war on terrorism. HOWEVER...then we have the rest of Bush policies that have just about put this country right into the crapper. Oil prices out of control, the Big Three automotive manufacturers struggling to stay afloat and a president who refuses to meet with them. Then we have the president who on one hand has been doing a good job on the war against terrorism, but refuses to seal up our borders and stop the influx of illegals entering this country. The President appears to have the desire to stop terrorist that are outside of this country but forgets about the ones that have the opportunity to easily enter our country unchecked. Lets not forget that it was not the United States who foiled the plot of terrorist who were planning on blowing up jets that were heading to our country just because the event has helped raise poll numbers for Bush. More Democrats certainly are not the answer, they had a great opportunity all year long to take advantage of a failing Republican party but they could not stand up to the task, and they let the opportunity fall right through the cracks. This November the only choice that Republican voters may have is to selectively weed out current Republican incumbents and replace them with new conservative blood who truly see all that has become so seriously wrong in Corporate and Political America. visit http://www.headsneedtoroll.org and post your views and opinions.

Portugese? Phylo wrote: "I know who I'm voting for."

I am impressed. 2 years before the election, no candidates named officially, and Phylo knows who he will vote for. Or could it be that he is so blinded by ideology that he would vote for the worst Democrat before voting Republican or any other party?

Personally, I won't vote for a Repub just to vote for a Repub. I have voted for Ben Nelson (a Dem) for Senate and for Governor because he was (in my opinion) a better senator. But then, I pay attention to the issues, people's records, and character. Not just the party listed next to their name.

A Change in the Winds
'FLAGWAVER' has it right. Hit 'em in the primaries. We've got some good conservative incumbents who deserve re-election, but we've also got air-head rhinos in the Republican Party who must be voted out in the primaries in favor of conservative candidates -- Lincoln Chaffee easily comes to mind. Why Republicans in Rhode Island keep putting a sissy lib like him on the Republican ticket blows my mind. This business of Republicans being "all-inclusive" is suicide for our party and gives the voting public no clear choice. Clarity is an absolute necessity in these troubled times.

Ayn Rand
Read a book by Ayn Rand and you will never vote for a democrat; the real American-Communist party.

The Threat is Real
And has been long before 9-11. It will be a threat long after Bush is in office.

He has admitted as much at the beginning of our attacks.

This is not just a war of political lines and expanding empires. This is about a way of life. It is about a liberal (used in the traditional sense, not reffering to politics) lifestyle to an ultra-conservative (again, not to imply Western politics) way of life. It is a war of religions: a freedom loving Christian world vs. a legalistic and strict Muslim world.

To end the war, one of two things must happen: one side must be so crushed as to not have any strength to fight back (aka be effectively destroyed) or so tamed or convinced the other side is right they stop fighting.

Right now, it seems the left is willing to say the other side is right and stop fighting. The trouble with this is that if we stop the war, there is little likelihood the other side will. They do not want mere peace, they want us out of the world. They will continue to fight until we are made to be nothing and they control all.

I know some will disagree, but what I say is true. I am not fearmongering, I am objectively looking at the reality of the rhetoric coming from our enemy.

I think our strategy must be two fold: 1) continue to take the fight to them rather than the other way around. 2) We must dilligiently work to convince the Arab world we are not an enemy and show them our goodwill.

This may sound like doublespeak, and perhaps it is. But their world sees us as aggressors only. Read Olly Norths recent peace to see what I mean. We need to fight those who fight us, but protect and convice them and their loved ones that we are not out to destroy them. The two must go hand in hand.

Sheila
George Wallace said in 1968 about the Republicans and the Democrats, "There's not a dime's worth of difference between the two."

The President and all his toadies could quit lying. President Bush needs to quit trying to convince the American Public that Islam is "..A peaceful and honorable" religion. He needs to quit dragging his feet with illegla aliens. He needs to quit trying to convince us that the only two alternatives to illegal aliens already here are; 1. Amnesty, and 2. Massive Deportation. The congress is out and you can bet there won't be any action on the illegal situation before the election. Then, after the election, there will (in the politician's mind) be no need for action. We have G. Wallace's Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum. I am tired of the Tweelde-dee's who were SUPPOSED to be conservative and have ended up giving our tax dollars away quicker than the Tweedle-dum's. i am tired of the Tweedle-dee's who are supposed to be American doing everything to make the Southwest a part of Mexico. If we are going to give our country away, if we are going to cut and run from every confrontation, if we are going to rend our garments and gnash our teeth over how bad Americans are, I had just as soon let the Professional wailers and gnashers do it for awhile. Let the Republicans sit on the bench for a couple of years. Maybe they will see the light.

justaguy
We cannot convince any of them we are 'good guys'. They don't care. They want one of two things; 1. They want us dead, or 2. They want us bowing to Mecca 4 or 5 times a day. All of them.

We are not at war with a few fanatics. We are at war with a whole religion. We are at war with the Army of Islam. And that army is 1 Billion strong. Quit listening to President Bush. Islam is NOT a peaceful religion. Read the Koran. You can pull it up on the internet. The ones we call the Islamofacists are merely the ground troops, the SS Corps of the Army of Islam. The 'moderate' muslims are the supply clerks, the disbursing clerks the intelligence corps and the spies who infiltrate a country before the Islamic SS invades. They are all out to conquer the world. Even the one who smiles and sells you cigarettes and beer at the local Snatch 'n Grab.

Atlas Shrugged?

Well at least now we know that a "Compassionate Conservative" is just a liberal with another name.

Buck
I do not disagree with your comments.

That does not negate what I argue. We must, somehow, convince them they are wrong. This by fear or by rational thought. I, too, doubt it'll be rational thought, at least in the short term.

As to Atlas Shrugged, I loved the book and feared it. There are two sides, in my estimation, of the novel. One an economic, which I loved. The other, a philosophic, which I fear dangerous.

The economic basically states that if we get too caught up in the attitude for social good in the corporate world, it kills the economy-- ie producing is better than being good.

The philosophical basically states that selfishness is the best thing out there. Anything less than what you can to for yourself is not sufficient. The self is the most important thing in the world.

Agreed. As long as you understand that not voting for Republicans will mean even more spending and even more immigration whether legal or illegal. The Democrats support bringing 100-200 million here legally and have been much more supportive of open borders than Republicans even.

Lydia writes

Would anyone try to explain to me why Bush works excessively hard to bring in illegals, when those from this group votes, most of them will vote democrat?

Both parties have many who are convinced the mass immigration will solve the problem with social security with over ½ the workforce set to retire and expected to live for 35 years. This at the same time they expect to grow jobs by tens of millions over the next two decades as they retire. We aborted 40 million potential workers and have job growth, low birth rates and increasing longevity. All are destroying the ration of workers to retirees.

At three to one as it is now, each worker has to make $38,000-40,000 just to pay his share for a current retiree getting a $1,200 benefit check. Then he has to make even more, if he is going to actually contribute to his own retirement. And, remember that person making that much, only gets to count about 32% of his earnings for a benefit check. Can you live on 32% of what you make?

stinky writes:

===============================
Many Republican voters support socialism, i.e. “tax the top 2%” so their “personal income tax” will be lower. They don’t realize that a low wage worker is in the 50% tax bracket. About 35% hidden tax and compliance cost in prices when you live paycheck to paycheck, 8% sales tax, 7.5% payroll tax. Notice, no income tax and you are already in the 50% bracket. That is why Chinese have 4 - 5 times the buying power and an $8,000 a year worker has $40,000 in buying power and their middle class now exceeds our entire population. Millionaires are growing at about a 12% rate so even the “wealthy” in China are growing rapidly too.

However, we need more conservative voters who will demand conservative policies for business and investment like those in Ireland, new Europe, New Zealand (decentralized, privatized, and eliminated subsidies on farms)

==========================
As usual Phylo doesn’t think.
We are going to be attacked. That we can count on. The move into Iraq was necessary because Saddam was violating the cease fire in the ongoing war began when he invaded Kuwait. Fortunately, the terrorists decided to focus on Iraq and it has proven to be a good tool in the war on terror for many reasons. We not only killed a lot of terrorists from Syria, Iran and other middle-east nations that supplied them, but saw Libya surrender its WMD and improve its role in the middle-east, we saw Iran and Syria revealed as important players in the funding of terrorism and supply of terrorists, weapons and other support against Israel, our ally and an economic force in the middle-east that employed many Palestinians and others in the robust Israeli economy that supplies us with many high tech goods as well as other goods and research we depend on.

We are reviled for the same reason Islam fascists “revile” all the other nations. Remember, it isn’t just the U.S. they have attacked .
Quote:
Moslems have attacked the parliament in India, Christians, Hindus in India, Hindus in Kashmir. Europeans in France, Spain, Italy, England, Norway, Germany, etc., Russians, Ukrainians, Uzbekistan - and all the other "stans." Moslems have attacked the United States.

Moslems have blown up Buddhist shrines, attacked in northern China, non-Moslems in Thailand, non-Moslems in the Philippines, non-Moslems in Indonesia. Moslems have attacked in Sri Lanka and are slaughtering Christians in Africa. What's going on in Africa is a religious war.

Fundamentalist Moslems have attacked other Moslems in: Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey as well as throughout Africa.
====================================
The socialists love to say our defense of the U.S. and our keeping Clinton’s promise to use more force after he bombed Iraq, is making us reviled. Funny how over 30 nations joined us in being “reviled” and how the nations that didn’t, like France and Germany are socialist strongholds that people like Phylo support the policies off. Appeasement and surrender may sound good, but they don’t stop people like the Islamofascists who openly state all “infidels” must be killed and even any Muslim that doesn’t support Islamofascism is to be killed as well. They not only openly say this, they back it up with the attacks listed. But, Phylo has bought into socialism and its principle that being a live coward is better than being a dead patriot.

As the socialist party of the U.S. states:
Quote:
We condemn war, preparation for war, and the militaristic culture because they play havoc with people's lives and divert resources from constructive social projects.
==========================
Phylo is more interested in supporting communists and socialists than the principles this nation was founded on. And those principle didn’t include a federal government funding and administering social programs. Those were to be state and local programs, not federal. But, Communists and socialists demand centralized power to force the whole nation conform to their standards of immorality and bad government.

Unfortunately, thinks to over 5 decades of socialists being in control of higher education and now even high schools and elementary schools in some areas, we have even got many Republicans that have bought into socialism which has failed in every nation that uses it. Even many old communist/socialist nations are shunning it for capitalism now.

We have to have more Dubai’s, Singapore’s, and nations like “India” with a rapidly growing middle-class to win. Bush said we would have to use “economic means” to win and he is 100% right. Military force is only good to stop a military action but the economic means are what will win the “minds.”

That was the whole goal when we accomplished the mission of removing Saddam’s government and started the new mission of being an ally of the new government. Whether we fail or succeed in created an economically prosperous Iraq, that is what it will take to combat nations like Iran, or people that support the Taliban and Hezbollah, Hamas, etc.

However, that too, is expensive and risking and socialists won’t like it because it will “divert resources from constructive social projects”

Sheila wrote:

Much of that is due to the major population centers in most states having adopted socialism’s principle of a centralized (federal) government handling social programs. Voters in both parties are electing socialist leaning politicians.

Look at the most popular Senators and you see Republicans from the gang of 14, Snowe and Collins, in 1st and 3rd and McCain in 16th for approval. Voters have become a big problem in defeating socialism.

Old Man
I'll accept economics as a way to show them we are not their enemy.

You are right, this is also expensive and will take some time to build it up. The terrorists also recognize that economic freedom will mean they lose.

I wonder

How is ABC going to spin 9-11 into being the Republican's fault when the period covered by their story will be a time frame when the democrats had control of foreign policy for 95% of the time? Clinton's legacy is going to take more then a few good hits during this one if it covered with any integrity.

Hockey Goon
I expect ABC to cover it pretty fairly, the libs are already upset with the network for it being too far right. I saw some posts on Dailykos re the issue.

How they fail to connect the dots amazes me. Perhaps more accurately it is how they put the dots together amazes me-- in whatever way they like.

Two Little Points
1. George Bush is not running for re-election in 2006 and, unfortunately IMO, will not be eligible to run in 2008. Democrats don't seem to be able to grasp this and prefer to spend their energies campaigning against George Bush.

2. For those of you who disapprove of George Bush's performance as President: have you honestly considered where we would be today if Al Gore or John Kerry had been elected instead?

Sahih Bukhari, Book 52:

Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad)

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 41:
Narrated Abdullah bin Masud:
I asked Allah's Apostle, "O Allah's Apostle! What is the best deed?" He
replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked,
"What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your
parents." I further asked, what is next in goodness?" He replied, "To
participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." I did not ask Allah's Apostle anymore
and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 44:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "Instruct me as to such a deed as
equals Jihad (in reward)." He replied, "I do not find such a deed." Then he
added, "Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battle-field, enter your
mosque to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast?"
The man said, "But who can do that?" Abu- Huraira added, "The Mujahid (i.e.
Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it
wanders bout (for grazing) tied in a long rope."

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 45:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
Somebody asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Who is the best among the people?" Allah's
Apostle replied "A believer who strives his utmost in Allah's Cause with his
life and property." They asked, "Who is next?" He replied, "A believer who
stays in one of the mountain paths worshipping Allah and leaving the people

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 46:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The example of a Mujahid in Allah's Cause--
and Allah knows better who really strives in His Cause----is like a person who
fasts and prays continuously. Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid
in His Cause into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 55:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet delivered a sermon and said, "Zaid took the flag and was martyred,
and then Ja'far took the flag and was martyred, and then 'Abdullah bin Rawaha
took the flag and was martyred too, and then Khalid bin Al-Walid took the flag

Prophet further added, "It would not please us to have them with us." Aiyub, a
sub-narrator, added, "Or the Prophet, shedding tears, said, 'It would not p

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 59:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! Whoever is wounded in
Allah's Cause....and Allah knows well who gets wounded in His Cause....will
come on the Day of Resurrection with his wound having the color of blood but
the scent of musk."

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 63:
Narrated Al-Bara:
A man whose face was covered with an iron mask (i.e. clad in armor) came to
the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall I fight or embrace Islam
first? "The Prophet said, "Embrace Islam first and then fight." So he embraced
Islam, and was martyred. Allah's Apostle said, A Little work, but a great
reward. "(He did very little (after embracing Islam), but he will be rewarded
in abundance)."

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 64:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Um Ar-Rubai'bint Al-Bara', the mother of Hartha bin Suraqa came to the Prophet
and said, "O Allah's Prophet! Will you tell me about Hartha?" Hartha has been
killed (i.e. martyred) on the day of Badr with an arrow thrown by an
unidentified person. She added, "If he is in Paradise, I will be patient;
otherwise, I will weep bitterly for him." He said, "O mother of Hartha! There
are Gardens in Paradise and your son got the Firdausal-ala (i.e. the best

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 65:
Narrated Abu Musa:
A man came to the Prophet and asked, "A man fights for war booty; another

1 trillion won't fix social security
Lydia writes:

The one trillion we just droped into Iraq could have boosted the Social Security program
====================
First, we can't spend the money on social security because Congress won't change the laws regarding social security. We have to borrow to fund our defense and social programs.

But, all of defense, including Iraq, all the other actions, Navy, Air-force and troops in places like Germany, So. Korea, and Japan are part of the spending in the last 4 years.

For this year, the budget for all the department of defense is $495 billion and smaller than the budget for Social Security and also smaller than the budget for human services.
quote:
Department of Defense--Military $491 Billion 58.7% Growth since 2001
Department of Health and Human Services $697 Billion 60% Growth since 2001
=========================
as you can see, the Defense growth is rapid due to the dilapidated condition it was in when Bush took office, but still less than Health and Human services growth.

We need more spending on defense and we need to see the mission in Iraq through. We need to cut spending in the social programs because at the federal level they are ineffective and inefficient. They would bankrupt this nation if not a dime was spent on defense because they are tied to mandatory spending increases that no Congress is willing to deal with.

Social security is 12% of our wages and yet, 4% is all that is needed for a worker paying for his own retirement in government bonds, which the trust fund surplus buys when it loans the funds to general revenue.

We have an $84 trillion unfunded liability for social security and Medicare and you think $1 trillon is going to fix it?

Quote:
This year's annual reports for Social Security and Medicare show the combined unfunded liability of these programs is $84 trillion in today's dollars — up more than $7 trillion from last year's report. The unfunded liability identifies the difference between what has been promised to current and future generations above what will be collected in taxes. Social Security and Medicare will consume an ever-increasing portion of workers' incomes unless the government either breaks its promises to future retirees or makes significant changes to our elderly entitlement programs.

Don't try and use socialst talking points that are distorted, unreliable and just smoke and mirrors to hide the problem they created with veering away from FDR's plan of workers funding their own retirement, not current retirees.

Remember, FDR planned on government paying from payroll taxes only long enough for the first retirees who hadn't paid in for most of their work life, to die. The rest of the workers would pay in for their own retirement.

quote: (FDR's speech when he began social security
In the important field of security for our old people, it seems necessary to adopt three principles: First, noncontributory old-age pensions for those who are now too old to build up their own insurance. It is, of course, clear that for perhaps 30 years to come funds will have to be provided by the States and the Federal Government to meet these pensions. Second, compulsory contributory annuities which in time will establish a self-supporting system for those now young and for future generations. Third, voluntary contributory annuities by which individual initiative can increase the annual amounts received in old age. It is proposed that the Federal Government assume one-half of the cost of the old-age pension plan, which ought ultimately to be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans.

Now, 22 tax increases later, and 10 times that the inflows were less than outflows, we are having to "fix" it again. It is a ponzi scheme that no amount of fixing under the current program will help.

That is why both parties are talking about 100-200 legal immigrants. They believe that is the number needed to offset the 77 million that will retire and on average use the system for 35 years. That is over 1/2 the current workforce and we have dropped from 16 workers to each retiree to 3 workers for each retiree due to longevity increases for the most part. Now that that longevity is expected to jump as much as 20 years in the next couple of decades, we are facing that $84 trillion problem and you are saying $1 trillion will fix it?

This administration has done many things that are socislist in nature. But, so will the Democrats and even more. Each of the spending binges this administration has embarked on out side of the needed defense spending, is matched by a plan of the Democrats and while a slightly different plan the spending is as much and more in most cases.

Ask them how they plan to pay for their spending, which they openly admit will be as much when cornered and they say, "We'll cut defense and tax the top 2% even though they know they can't.

They get the voters to believe they can tax business and the top 2% and yet every nation that has tried it drove the tax revenues down as business and the wealthy either left or the wealthy did what Sen. Kerry openly admits he did. They move it into tax free securities and pay no tax on that income.

So, tell me how they will do a better job of spending and tax revenues when they admit they will spend more and initiate policies that lower tax revenues.

The brag about the tax increase under Clinton and how much good it did. Let's look at that record and how it affected business, our jobs, our wages, our tax revenues as those policies took hold. Remember it takes as much as 2 or 3 years for tax and business policy to show their effect. But here is job growth under Clinton.

Quote:

Gross Domestic Product has expanded six consecutive quarters and industrial production grew in 2002. But total non-farm payroll employment has declined by 2.1 million jobs since its peak in March 2001, leading critics to pin the decrease on President Bush and to describe the current economic situation as a “jobless recovery.”

But closer examination of the employment data shows that if blame is to be awarded, it should go to ex-President Clinton.
Snip================
Job losses are concentrated in the economy’s manufacturing private industry sector, which peaked in April 1998 on Clinton’s watch. In the ensuing five years, 2.6 million manufacturing jobs (14 percent) have disappeared.
snip------------------------
Nondurable manufacturing employment peaked at 7.9 million workers in January 1995. Components that peaked under Clinton included: food and kindred products (October 1995); textile mill products (November 1994); printing and publishing (May 1998); and rubber and miscellaneous plastics (February 2000). Many of these jobs were once concentrated in the South.

Durable manufacturing peaked at 11.2 million workers in April 1998. Components that peaked under Clinton included: lumber and wood (February 2000); furniture and fixtures (July 2000); primary metals (January 1998); fabricated metals (July 2000); industrial machinery and equipment (March 1998); electronic and other electrical equipment (November 2000); transportation equipment (October 1998); instruments and related products (March 1998); and miscellaneous manufacturing (April 1998). Some of the largest durables goods employment is in the upper Midwest.

Notice those dates and how long before Clinton left office the problems were growing. The recession that was predicted before George Bush ever started his campaign came true. How did they know there was going to be a recession? Simple. They looked at the Clinton policies and saw what they were causing. Job growth was in a freefall before G.W. ever took office. That doesn't mean jobs weren't being created but that the rate was dropping like a rock until jobs were lost.

They use 2000 as the start of the rapid loss in Job growth as if 2000 was Bush's year. That was Clinton's year since Bush was elected in 2000 but didn't take office until 2001. The recession was a Clinton generated recession and it takes about 3 years to get policies in place and then they have an effect which is exactly what happened.

Now I don't agree with the types of tax cuts because they weren't on Business Income like other nations are doing to make their businesses competitive but they are all the Democrats with their filibuster power and the voters (we have become quite socialist about taxes) would allow. Still they helped but I don't see them being a long lasting aid.

The "politicians" talk about economic cycles and how we have up and down periods and seldom do they last more than four or five years. Yet, other nations have had steady growth for over a decade using capitalism, tax cuts, decentrailization, deregulation and simplier tax codes that reduce compliance costs.
