Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

To a lot of Christians, the worst happened this weekend when their great crusader for faith in Hollywood took a very public, very appalling tumble from grace.

To many others (read: rabid secularists and the press) Mel Gibson’s arrest was the best thing that could happen, proving what they’ve suspected all along—that all those Jesus freak bible-thumpers (even those who support Israel) are a bunch snarling anti-Semites.

But what does Gibson’s DUI arrest and subsequent anti-Semitic tirade really signify? Perhaps less about Gibson than it does about the rest of us.

To wit: The first comment most evangelicals I know made after hearing about the incident was, “Okay, so he probably was driving drunk, but gosh, I really hope he didn’t say anything racist.” Forget the fact that he might have killed someone, he made nasty remarks about another group of people! Years of pistol whipping from the politically-correct police have taught the public to value feelings above everything, including life, so that bigotry alone is the unforgivable sin.

This is not to discount the seriousness of racism--the very existence of Hezbollah demonstrates where such thought patterns can lead--but alcoholics (particularly alcoholics in the process of being arrested) have been known to say hideous things while drunk that they wouldn’t even think in their right minds. Once sober, Gibson issued an apology, saying, “I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed…” In a later statement he specifically expressed his regret to the Jewish community: “There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said,” stated Gibson.

America has witnessed countless scandals from its public figures over the years, but it has seen few apologies as filled with remorse and acknowledgement of wrong doing as this one. Unlike another well-known individual recently caught driving while intoxicated, Gibson hasn’t hidden behind lawyers or tried to attribute his behavior to some other cause like sleeping medication. The day after the incident, he commented simply, “After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong.” He didn’t say, “I don’t remember doing wrong things, but I’ve been told that I did.” Nor did anyone have to track down bartenders to confirm he’d been imbibing. He acted like a man and admitted it.

Gibson also hasn’t taken a cue from a certain Congresswoman and blamed the police for his lack of self control. Said Gibson on Saturday, “The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person… I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself.”

But neither his apologies nor his clear understanding of the gravity of his crime will stop certain groups from reveling in his shame. Thank Heaven Gibson's God is one who offers forgiveness and second chances---because when it comes to Catholic moviemakers, the American media sure won’t.

The Anti-Defamation League wasted no time passing the sternest judgment, insisting that the Oscar winner’s apology is “unremorseful” and asking the entertainment industry to, “Distance themselves from this anti-Semite." They probably will, and it’s strange to think that Gibson won’t fare as well in this scandal as fellow filmmakers who have committed far more horrifying acts. Last time I checked child rapist Roman Polanski and child molester Woody Allen were not only working, but winning impressive accolades from their peers.

When Hollywood insiders like Nora Ephron write on The Huffington Post, “Let's just stop to savor the moment when there's finally proof positive about how Mel really feels,’ the public should question their motivation for calling an end to his career. Would a person who is truly offended and concerned over what influence Gibson's behavior may have say, 'Let's just stop to savor the moment...'?

This is not to suggest that Gibson shouldn’t experience some professional fallout for his actions and remarks, but reports have it that the ADL is urging the police to investigate whether any hate speech laws were violated. Gibson’s remarks were horrendous, but are they criminal? More criminal than, say, drugging a 13-year-old girl in order to have sex with her? Where was the entertainment industry outrage when such a man won an Oscar in 2002 for “The Pianist”?

Finally, Christian fans who are already expressing devastation and dismay over the incident should remember, we do not know what Christ is doing in Gibson’s life right now, but we do know what we are called to do…up to seventy times seven. Whatever details may come to light, no one need fear what they will do to Jesus’ reputation—surely the Holy Lord of the universe is secure in his P.R. And perhaps this should stand as a reminder that it is Christ and not some A-list actor/director, who is the head of the church. Anyone putting their faith in a mere mortal can be assured, eventually, in some way or another, they will be disappointed.

Plenty of guilt to go around
Gibson's conduct is no doubt disappointing to many. But,Basham's point is well made that, in the eyes of most, the greater sin was his racial slurs, not his drunk driving. Our culture is so PC, we are more offended that he may have hurt someone's feelings than that he might have killed someone.

If Gibsob's conduct does nothing else, it proves the wisdom of the scriptural injunction, "(Eph 5:18 NIV) "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." If we uncork the bottle too much, the bottle will uncork the debauchery that lies within each of us.

According to what I have read, Gibson was raised by an anti-semite. Couple that with the inborn self-love and others-hatred that is natural to all humans, and it would be ridiculous to think that anti-semitism would not be in Gibson's mind as a latent principle.

But is it not the nature of human virtue that it supresses the baser instincts of our hearts and minds? And is it not the nature of excessive drinking to remove that supression? Let none of us flatter ourselves with the thought that if the restraints of society, law, and and a good upbringing were removed, we would remain the "virtuous" people we think we are.

Gibson's conduct is unexusable, but not unforgivable. His conduct represents a failure to be what he wants to be. Sadly, for many in the acting profession, when they act scandalously, it represents success in being what they want to be. Gibson regrets that he violated his conscience and broke the law; many in Hollywood seem to have no conscince and regret there is law.

So, let us be careful to cork the bottle at the right time, lest is uncork us.

Perspective.

I've long been a Christian sympathetic for the plight of my Jewish brothers and sisters, and I still am. In spite of this, I am disappointed by the reaction of the Jewish community. At a time when Iran and Hezbollah are trying to wipe the Jewish state from the map and an Arab man kills Jews in Seattle in an act of anti-semetic rage, many in the Jewish community are most outraged at Mel Gibson. As I've said many times before, we live in a broken world.

Wonderfully Written!
This is a WONDERFUL article: I am a writer and I could not have written a better one. The bottom line is: There was only one PERFECT human being, and his name was JESUS. We should not look for perfection and guidance from any other source but the spirit of the Lord! Mel Gibson (or any other "spiritual" personality) is NOT Jesus, he is flesh and blood. We must never ever forget this fact.

Interesting...
Every post I read condemned Gibson.

Look into your hearts and be honest.

Did every one of you also condemn Cynthia McKinney when she slapped a simple Capitol guard doing his job? And she was supposedly stone-cold sober.

BTW, to: "The Irreverent Reverend": your post was especially idiotic. You said Gibson was "an Anti-Christ". Well, if you were any kind of "reverend" at all, you'd know that they don't come down the pike in a six-pack, fool. There's only going to be one.

"freeman" has got a pretty good handle on it. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH could live their lives better. We ALL have thoughts better left unsaid:

You ever flip someone off in traffic?

You ever "beam" bad thoughts at the jerk in the grocery express lane with 25 items?

You ever curse at the idiot in the fast lane doing 55?

Ever look at that kid with the Mohawk haircut and think he's a druggie/

Eever look at the three black teens coming your way and cross the street or duck into a store?

I could go on and on. This is the whole point of the dictum "judge not lest ye be judged".

For the alcoholic, alcohol can for some render personality changes while intoxicated. Most know the guy that got drunk who just was not the same person. True I doubt someone would say what he said in a vacuum, but in his life people accused his father and he was accused of anti-semitism due to his film. So, this was something on his mind that might not be on any of ours. And being reprimanded by the officers could very well have brought to mind the accusations of some Jews toward him. Don't forget he called these statements despicable when outside of the influence of alcohol.

hypocrisy
The reason that this is such big news is because of the hypocrisy involved. Everybody, liberal and conservative, hates that. For the last 3 years Gibson has held himself out as a mouthpiece for the evangelical right. I'm not saying that he did this intentionally, or even willingly, but he did it. And then he gets caught making such sensational statements. Of course the press is going to make a HUGE deal about this. And I think they should. It would be unfair to everyone who disagreed with him if this was covered up. I commend Gibson for acting very well after the incident, as I'm sure his PR people instructed. I have no problem with Gibson the actor; hopefully this is the end of Gibson the zealot. And as far as your Robert Downey Jr comparison goes - total BS. Every time he got caught doing something bad it was huge news and it certainly wasn't reported in a pleasant light. Futhermore, he is not a political figure.

Anti-Semite = Anti-Christ
As Christ was a Jew, Gibson is also an Anti-Christ.

Stop dividing us!
Every bit of news in the world does not divide into conservative Christians versus everyone else! The writer implies there are only two views here, one of the "Christians" and one of the "rabid secularists and the press."

I am a Catholic, same as Mr. Hollywood big shot. And my religion informs me that Anti'semitism is an ugly thing. It does not become any less ugly when uttered by a self professed Christian, or pretty movie star, or spoiled rotten Hollywood brat who threatens working cops that he "owns this town" and will "destroy" them for upholding the law.

Ugly is ugly. And Mel Gibson's heart has been filled with ugly feelings toward Jews for a long time. Liquor doesn't just magically induce rants of issue we don't already feel. I might say a lot of crazy things when drunk. But none would have to do with "Jews running the world".

Those who condone this behavior, I wonder why you are so apologetic for this particular spoiled rotten Hollywood star?

Gibson's Folly
Since you have tagged Gibson with the religious moniker of "great crusader for faith in Hollywood" let's examine his conduct from the perspective of what Jesus Christ had to say about what comes out of a man's mouth as a reflection of what is in his heart: (Mark 7:20-23) And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. "All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."

Christ also taught that we know a tree by the fruit it bears. Gibson has borne some ugly fruit. Drunkeness and alcoholism are not excuses for lawlessness, racism, and threatening a police officer.

It is indeed unfortunate that Mel Gibson is "addicted" to alcohol. However, to become addicted to alcohol one must first drink alcohol and then choose to do so to excess.

People make choices. These choices have consequences. We should pity (and pray for) Mel Gibson. However, he must take responsibility for his actions. Whatever spewed from his mouth came from his mind. It is unlikely as someone has already observed that the alcohol implanted thoughts that weren't already there. The drug simply removed inhibitions which previously kept Gibson from unveiling his already vile thoughts.

By the way, making a "religious movie" doesn't make anyone a Christian any more than being in a fastfood restaurant makes one a hamburger. Cecil B. DeMille made "religious movies" and no one is calling him a "faith crusader." James Brolin appeared as the Apostle Peter in a film some years ago and he makes no pretense of religiosity.

Let me encourage you, Megan, to show some discernment. What came out of Mel Gibson's mind shows what was on his mind (and in his heart). Perhaps his religion was like that of the Pharisees, fervent but misguided and incomplete. It did not pierce his heart, or really change his life. Remember, this is not his first traffic stop for drunk driving.

So the whole world can be divided into "Christians" who all believe one thing, and "reabid secularists and the press" who believe something different?

I'm a Catholic, same as the Hollywood hotshot here. And I have no sympathy for anti semites. You don't get a pass because you are rich, or Catholic, or a pretty movie star. Ugly is ugly. And anti-semitism is pretty damn ugly.

I'm no expert, but. . . . .
Generally speaking, it's been my experience that alcohol does not put thoughts in your head, but rather lowers inhibitions. I like Mel Gibson and I'm sorry for whatever seems to be troubling him. However, I'm not going to apologize for his behavior or condone it. He should be forgiven of his sins, but he should also pay the price of driving under the influence like everyone else. As for his comments, (If he actually said what is reported) I find them disappointing. I know this world has had a long-running antipathy for Jewish people, but I've never understood it. I truly don't get it. I can only hope that this was something said out of anger and indiscretion, but not what's in his heart.
