Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The decision by California voters to roundly reject a series of ballot measures, including keeping in place certain tax increases, could give us all a glimpse as to how Americans might just view the staggering deficits we are and will be incurring on the federal level.

When we hear of recommendations that minority-owned broadcasting companies and big-city newspapers should get bailouts, I'm sorry, we hit the absolute brick wall.

To the Obama administration's credit, there is some evidence that it has reached its own limits to handing out bailouts left and right. Much of the new talk comes from Congress, in particular, a House whose speaker has become the nation's new political lightening rod. Even a profile of Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the "new" and imminently cancellable (my wife makes those decisions, and she put the "thumbs down" on it) remake of Newsweek was not particularly flattering to Pelosi.

What Speaker Pelosi and others should likely do is take stock in what even Democratic voters in her own state did when presented with the bill to pay for endless programs and a massive state payroll. They balked. This was, the allegedly liberal bastion of America said, "enough!" The only measure that passed was limiting pay raises for elected officials in tough times. No shock there.

Let's assume for a moment that every proposal coming from the Obama administration is a true and noble one. Now before you start throwing rocks and other foreign objects, I'm just suggesting we test this without even concerning ourselves as to the validity of the alleged purpose.

There has been so much proposed so quickly that many of the initiatives are suffering blowback and the likelihood of serious watering down if and when they become law. And a vicious cycle is developing.

Efforts such as a "charge" for emissions of carbon and "greenhouse gasses" was originally meant to bring down pollution levels in a matter of years -- it was also supposed to create phenomenal revenue for the federal government. But even in the more liberal House the bill has had trouble making it out without giving energy-producing companies and others additional years and some degree of free "credits," which in turn means the revenue stream to "Uncle (now some say "Big Brother") Sam" will be substantially less. And the bill faces steeper opposition when it hits the Senate.

Then there's the semi-defined "healthcare" plan. Funding a government alternative for healthcare has led to concepts like a tax on sugar-based soft drinks -- an effort that has not met with much enthusiasm in most states where proposed in the past -- and has now morphed into a possible tax on alcohol. The fact is that none of these proposals would likely float the cost of a truly "universal healthcare" program.

The true whopper of a proposal is the administration's effort to tax "evil companies" that sell their products in other nations, but which, for whatever reason, avoid taxation of those sales in the United States. This might be the one stream of revenue the Democrats could sneak by the public. The administration has done a good job of couching these Fortune 500 companies and others as "using tax havens" and attempting to "manipulate" tax laws. As a pollster I can tell you that the PR campaign on this one will take real skill to avoid this potential proposal from taking some form of real and powerful law.

But here's the problem. Many of these corporations earn much of their income in countries with much fairer corporate tax structures. If they are penalized for their success overseas, guess what? They will move their complete operations out of the United States. Think I'm kidding? Just ask them. There go tens of thousands of jobs and more lost revenue.

We can't just blame Barack Obama or even the Democratic Congress for the current mountain of debt we are facing. But the administration and Congress needs to think long and hard about trying to solve all of the world's problems in just over 100 days. Once the costs hit home and the magic bullets to pay for them become unpalatable, even in big "Blue" states, the voters turn very nasty, very quick. And what ends up happening? The very budgets that got out of hand have to be cut.

So why must we whistle the tune "California, Here I … ," make that "'We' Come," while we can still attempt to avoid the same painful and potentially mortal fate?

This is a great article!

The points made are very true and from recent actions by our elected officials in DC, it looks like they are indeed re-evaluating their positions, at least they had better be!

California is definitely
the canary in the mine shaft here. The left coast is proof positive that liberalism and government intervention do not work. Mountains of debt, a wealth of social entitlement programs that would make Trotsky gag and what is California left with?

Where were all the public
employees and their acolytes on election day?

Public employee unions spent millions promoting these props and they all lost by about 30 points.

Today's LA Slimes had the front page covered with the "catastrophic" details. CA is now headed over the cliff with cuts in police, firefighters, teachers, health care, aid to the poor, etc.

Nowhere was there to be found any mention of substantial cuts in pay and benefits for state workers which is the only way to get spending under control. CA state government of, by and for public employee unions has proven a dismal failure.

Like Old German Kings
I love visiting the old castles in Europe. The feudal systems was self sustaining and lasted for centuries. It simply worked like this:

The surfs toiled in the field and the castle. They supplimented the kings army, supplired all the needs of the castle, the army and the political hangers-on. They toiled with complete blind allegiance to their king! In return, the king provided allowed them to keep
enough of the fruits of their labor to subsist
and guaranteed their protection "against all external threats".

These systems were the model for todays Government where a public service employees dave "traded their souls for the ultimate security guaranteed by the bureaucracy" and five their unwaivering loyalty, labor and total commitment to their "One King", the Democrat party and its minions. True, they are mostly meaningless jobs without any individual authority where every effort has to be performed by some "idiot proof procedure" that is insulting on its face, but then, as you are seeing now, The king rises to any threst to their security, bringing them into the protective walls of the Civil Service Bastion, threatening anyone who suggests they be treated like the "non public workers". No wonder the feudal system lasted so long. Want to see the surfs work? Just wait around till
election time.

Sorry for the hasty typing, should have
Its dark in here; I am saving coal at my local power plant.

Keep the white horse in the stall
I have already faxed my Senator "strongly urged" him to vote a resounding "NO" to any bail-out for CA. They had spent unimaginable amounts for illegal aliens: schooling, medical, housing, etc. Maybe they might say, DUH? and
realize this IS the United States, and not
northern Mexico and fiscally act accordingly.
(I can dream, can't I?)
I see it as similar to ME maxing out my Credit
Card and asking taxpaying citizens to pick up
the payments for me. They over-extended, they
pay the price.
I really feel it would be unconstitutional for
the gov't to pick up their slack (lack) as that
would, in essence, over-ride the balloted votes
of the majority of California citizens. It would TAKE AWAY their vote. Last I heard, we
still had the right to vote for an issue on the
ballot.
A few years back I heard on TV that for the first time more people were moving FROM CA. than
to CA. I recently heard people were moving at the rate of 3,000 a month or year..don't remember which. But I can surely understand.
I say NO no bailout. Leave the voters vote
stand and don't over-ride them.
**My fax cost less than $40 and about 5 cents
per copy to send.. cheaper than a phone call and
more effective.**

Knowing this freakin' state as I do,
somehow the dumba$$ legislature or the supremes, or the 9th circus, will somehow circumvent the vote or just declare it invalid or illegal. They'll just jack up some other "sin" tax or put a 'carbon tax' on breathing, since exhaling is a greenhouse gas.

I'd leave this state but my property's value went to crap because of the idiotic sub-prime mortgage program created and supported by the libs in the congress.

Wish me luck. I'm drowning.

Re: leave white horse in the stall

I SHOULD have mentioned that the majority of
voters who voted against the taxes WERE VERY
COURAGEOUS! They set an example that the other
49 states should follow.
They're smart enough to know it will create
some hardships, but STILL voted against it. I
believe the patriotic founders of the United
States and the authors of our Constitution would
be very, very proud of them. I SURELY AM!
In the first 100 days of THIS Congress, I do
believe they sewed up a Republican win for the
NEXT ELECTION. LOL, maybe Pelosi assure that!
ANY REPUBLICAN RUNNING FOR CONGRESS/SENATE
NEXT ELECTION HAS MY VOTE! McCain may not have
been the best, and the next one may not be any/
much better....BUT HE SURE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER THAN Barack Husein Obama, aka Barry
Soetoro. At least McCain HAS a birth certificate to show!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's face it folks
The Oblahblah honeymoon is over. He tried but couldn't and won't be able to pass thru the Congress all the Socialist policies he wants to. In fact he's done NOTHING but pontificate, spend money, and blame Bush. Somehow I don't think this is what many of his supporters had in mind when they pulled the lever dreaming of "hope and change". As it stands now the only change we'll have left is the change in our pockets after Oblahblah is done taxing us into poverty. And the only hope we have is his losing majorities in the Congress. There is still lots of time left for he and his cohorts like Peloser, Reed, and company to dig themeselves further into a hole they'll never crawl out of. While the Congress is pre-occupied with prosecuting Bush era officials and covering up their own complicity, NOTHING gets done. Which in this administration's case is a blessing in disguise. I've said it before and I'll say it again. This administration is making the same mistakes the previous one did when it ignores the will of the American people. There will have to be a major turn around in the direction this country is taking before the next election cycle or Democrats will see their numbers erode. To believe the country suddenly turned hard left is a foolish mistake. Public anger over spending and governmental ineptness caused the past election trends and it won't be tolerated from this administration either. To those in denial of Oblahblah's socialist leanings, his recent takeover of private banks and the automobile industry have shown his true colors.

To any liberal
asking that we give liberal economic policies a chance, I have one word. California

To anyone that claims the government is suited to care for our every need I have one word. California

To everyone that thinks America is now a hard left oriented country that supports tax/spend policies, cradle to grave government care, and that it can work, I have one word. California

To all that advocate amnesty for illegals I have one word. California

How anyone can suggest we go the way of California is beyond any rational thinking. California's problems didn't just start in the last decade, they've been building over years and years of liberal state policies and now the state's citizens have had enough. Liberals in California, your chickens have come home to roost. Democrats in the Congress should pay special attention to what voters in California, THE most liberal state in the country have said here. Continue pushing liberal policies thru the Congress at your own peril. The honeymoon is over and the time for blaming Bush is past. It is time for solutions to our problems, not persecution of a past administration. Americans aren't interested in your partisan attacks and don't consider them productive or a solution. Rather they're more of the same.

California Is Never Coming Back
It cannot as long as the majority vote Dem, which they will because nearly all are sucking on the public t+t in some fashion.

CA COULD come back IF: she cut state, city and county employee wages drastically, stopped paying union wages to public works workers, cut income and sales tax, drastically lowered entitlements, controlled the border, stopped making ridiculous enviro regs and got tough on gangs.

In other words, get the businesses back and send the drones packing.

Singing the California Blues

I live in California with all of these sanctimonious "progressives". We have teachers making over 100,000 a year for 9 months of work, long vacations and great medical benefits. Yet, we are not seeing any positive results for paying these people these excessive salaries. The drop-out rate in California is huge.

You could give these progressives all of the evidence that their ideas don't work and they will never admit it.

I always cringe when I hear "get out the vote" in California. Progressives want uniformed idiots voting. It is always to their advantage. I actually had someone tell me that she always votes for bond measures, because it makes her "feel good". I asked her if she knew where the money for the bonds came from. And she had no idea that it was from the taxpayer. Progressive never stop to think about where the money comes from.

If they try the "get out the vote" project in your state, you have been forewarned. Your state ,too, could become California.

p.s. I voted, as I always do, against all propositions on the ballot.

It's going to happen in NJ too...
"Cali East" is New Jersey. There's a reason why folks are leaving this state in record numbers. Crazy as it seems, though - they tax you WHEN YOU LEAVE!!

We have a gubernatorial race coming up. The average Joe in Joisey votes Dumbocrat every time. Our last 4 Govs have been Dems (including the "gay American" governor that nailed home the reputation NJ has as a laughing-stock)...our Senators and Congressmen...Dems...our mayor and town council members...(drum roll)...DEMS! Yet people in NJ whine and complain that their taxes are too high and corruption runs rampant and nanny-state legislation flies through without so much as a whimper. Guess what, NJ Libs - YOU voted for them!!!

I'm hoping people finally pull the wool mask away from their eyes, wake up, and see what's going on out there...then finally shoo the democrat flies away from the buffet table, once and for all.

Tom in TX...
Excellent, well-written, and to the point! Your posts are gold...I couldn't say them any better myself.

You put the bisket in the basket my friend!!

Where's the acorn crowd?

I see no libidiocy on this post. I wonder why?

Petulant Brats
As a Sacramento resident I was appalled to read in the Sacramento Bee statements from the Govenator and numerous assemblymen and senators warning how they were going to have to slash our services drastically if this was how we the voters felt.

Like little spoiled brats they are gonna show us. As JAG said earlier not a peep about cutting goverment, government workers, or government pay and benefits.

No like always these meatheads will cut vital services that the taxpayer IS entiltled to, like police, fire, education while completely ignoring the freebies given to illegals and to the non-productive, as well as waste in their bureaucracy.

I was on a state website with an overview of the budget and the third largest piece of the pie representing the states expenditures was "other" following education and criminal justice. No explanation of what "other" entailed.

I say we start cutting "other" first and eliminate all giveaways. In my house when a month is tough my church just can't get as much charity as I can give when times are good. I am not a heartless man and I'd like to see everyone legal taken care of but when the money's not there you just can't do it. The productive should get theirs first. But these pinhead politicians are too busy buying votes to ever change.

Vote 'em all out on the state and fed levels. It's all we've got people.

One More Thing
Only a Dim could think it was wise to:

a) ignore the available offshore petroleum reserves and the potential revenue to be generated from the oil itself or contracts tendered for the rights to drill for it in CA waters while the state drowns in red ink.
b) increase taxes on corporations accelerating the flight of business from the state
c) try to reach further into the pockets of an overtaxed, financially struggling population in order to finance their own ineptitude.

Face it. Libdrools are pathetic!

LOL...This is great..........

Tee hee hee heeeeeeeeeee

Liberal policies bearing their fruits.........GLORIOUS!

tee heee heeeee heeeeeeeeee

"Godfather" Moment for CA Voters
Compare:

Michael Corleone:
"Senator? You can have my answer now, if you like. My final offer is this: nothing. Not even the fee for the gaming license, which I would appreciate if you would put up personally."

California voters:
"Elected officials? You can have our answer now, if you like. Our final offer is this: nothing. Not even a pay increase. In fact, you'll see that the commission has voted you an 18% pay decrease."

Tom-TX
U, Sir, are SPOT ON!! If we can't gaze at the "Late, Great State" aka CalYforny and figure out this bull Crap that Ob & Bunch are trying to implement is JUST THAT
