Britain's Ban on an American Talk Show Host is An Outrage

It's been decades since I was a student at England's Cambridge University. Since I graduated in 1984, I have returned only a few times to this wonderful country, which I love so dearly and whose people so warmly embraced me.

So I admit to shock over British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's publication of 16 names of persons now banned from the United Kingdom for allegedly fostering extremism or hatred. My surprise and dismay was in the odd mixture of names on the list. On the one hand, there's a Hezbollah militant who served 30 years in prison for his role in the killing of four Israeli soldiers and a 4-year-old girl. On the other, there's American talk show host Michael Savage, who, among other provocative commentary, has called the Koran a "book of hate."

So militants who advocate or glorify terrorism are now somehow the equivalent of one of the most listened-to talk radio hosts in America? Surely this can't be coming from the great British nation I came to love; a country where great universities such as Cambridge and Oxford educated generations going back to the 1200s, urged students to explore and express divergent theories and views, even when some of those views were at the time generally considered to be unconventional, extreme and even dangerous.

I have a unique perspective on the situation, both because of the intense value I place on the intellectual contribution the British have made to our civilization, and because I listen on a regular basis to Dr. Savage's syndicated show.

I hope listening to "The Savage Nation" doesn't cause Britain to add me to its list of nefarious characters! But I'll run that risk because this is a situation that deserves an expression of true outrage on the part of all Americans, whether they agree with Savage's comments and positions or not.

Let's take a quick look at Savage. He was born under another name, but adopted the surname Savage, as is not unusual in the entertainment industry. National media generally try to ignore his existence, even though Savage has one of the three largest talk-radio listenerships in the nation.

Most likely media disdains him partly because he is both well educated -- he holds Master's degrees and a Ph.D. from Berkley -- and because his on-air personality is often gruff and cantankerous. Savage is prone to take on controversial social and political issues, often pushing things to the edge of opinion.

While some may find Savage's opinions offensive -- for example, he often acidly comments on what he refers to as his hometown of San Francisco's obsession with gay and lesbian issues -- he to my knowledge has never urged listeners to incite riots, harm other humans, commit terrorism or advocate other acts of hatred. Indeed, more often than not he bemoans the ineffectiveness of both Republicans and Democrats. He often drifts from political and social issues altogether to discuss everything from the food he ate the night before to some funny story from his childhood.

My purpose here is not to defend all of Michael Savage's opinions. Like many, there are times when I both agree and disagree with his views. Sometimes he makes me laugh, and sometimes he makes me cringe. But I will defend his right to speak freely, and I will passionately vouch for Savage that he is no threat to either America or Britain -- or to the nearest fly, for that matter.

I'm not alone in this opinion. Even prominent members of the American Civil Liberties Union bemoan the situation. They compare Britain's action with our own Patriot Act, under which the ACLU claims that the United States has banned some foreign nationals from America because of their ideologies and not because they are threats to our security.

As for Savage, he seems more interested in living a quiet personal life and spending time with his dog than he does with agitating for rallies and protests, much less to do physical harm to anyone.

Even if my judgment of Savage is off, the question remains: What does this British list say about a longtime allied nation to America when it decides to take unjustified measures based on expressions of free speech made in another country? Are we treading now on a slippery slope? Will there come a day when those who opine for a living find their words of commentary labeled "hate speech" by their own government? Talk of lists compiled by our own Department of Homeland Security suggests a hint of just such a risk.

It pains me to say this, but it appears that in this unfortunate instance, the true Savage Nation isn't Dr. Savage, but the United Kingdom, for its equating of a talk-show host with killers and advocates of terrorism.

About Michael Savage, the British Home Office said: "Considered to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence."

Anyone who listens to Michael Savage's shows regularly would know he does no such thing as seek to provoke any kind of criminal act whatsoever, and "fostering hatred" is so general a phrase it defies replying to, so on its face is meaningless. The British government is eking out lies to try to destroy him.

Michael Savage tries to teach common sense values, on a common level, that apply in real world situations, and isn't about obfuscating reality with empty platitudes that befuddle most people and no one but idiots believe.

This may be a threat to a government that thinks that no one but the government is allowed to say what is good and what is bad and to be hated. Perhaps.

But on the subject of hate, anger is traditionally recognized as bad, but not necessarily hate. So what is so wrong with "hate" and why all this "anti-hate" talk among the media and political circles? Is hate listed among the seven deadly sins? No. Does God hate? (such things as sin, and immorality?) Yes. Does the Book of Ecclesiastes say there is a time
love, and a time for hate? Yes.

Michael Savage would do better to only speak
in good taste, like Paul Harvey and even Rush Limbaugh, heck like most in the media to be completely fair, but he doesn't always. It is a source of weakness that may also be a source of strength, and not just in ratings. Just like that odd-looking front tooth he has might be another source of strength, and insight. These may be reasons to not listen to or look at him, especially for those with traditional Victorian sensibilities, if there are any left. But that's about the extent of his danger: occasional distasteful speech and an odd front tooth.

Perhaps, though, the English may not really know how to handle free speech, being subjects of a kingdom, not citizens of a republic, so maybe there's some dynamic Jacqui (is that an English name?) Smith knows about that Americans would never guess. But
that's pushing it. Those chaps in the House of Commons seem to have a lot of fun engaging in loudly aggressive criticisms all day. But
then again they're just a bunch of sheepish schoolboys when it comes to many important issues, same as our politicians, except Tancredo. Still, I wouldn't want to presume to pressure England to give its subjects something they can't handle, like free speech downtown America style.

Just let Smith apologize to Michael but explain that England doesn't have freedom of speech for a reason, but respects its value
in America. I'm sure she would gladly do the same basic thing for the Muslims on her list who really are trying to destroy her country and incite criminal acts, if they also insist, so I don't see it being a problem.

Before you slag off Britain as "Londinistan" and other such rubbish, remember we are suffering from the same malaise as the USA. We have a majority of right wing conservative population that are scratching their heads wondering how the hell did we get such a left wing lunatic government in charge of us?

Ambivalent
Perhaps barring Michael Savage is an official response to the iPod incident and other affronts by the Obama administration. Declaring Obama himself _persona non grata_ would've been much more pointed, however.

Retribution or not, this is a still slap at the United States in general and Americans to the right of Al Gore specifically. It further strains international relations while accomplishing nothing beneficial. And it adds to the great mass of evidence that the United Kingdom is run by idiots.

Having said all this, I hasten to add that the U.K. is a sovereign nation -- barely -- and it may defend its borders as it pleases. Its immune system isn't robust, but at least it still has one.

I'm uncertain exactly why it is that Savage would be afforded this singular honor. Likely it is his outspoken contempt for Islam.

The UK is rapidly transforming itself into an Islamic state and leftist politicians are scared to death of them. Yet, the UK continues, as do other western countries, to import Islamics wholesale.

The race is on to see if France and the UK can become Islamic states before the U.S. can become a Hispanic nation.

Leftists are not long on critical thinking. I wonder if Ms. Smith thinks she will have a seat at the table of Islamic power? Maybe, but only if she wears a burka and keeps her mouth shut.

Its about mutualizing and appeasment
Its like a parent or teacher punishing all the kids for the behavior of a few. At the core of this is the hope that the kids acting acting out won't do worse because they won't feel "singled out"- as if that is a problem. Its nonsensical and cowardly, but done all the time.

This Will Hurt Tourism
I think this will hurt tourism. Free speech loving people may be less excited about visiting a country that is reverting to the Dark Ages in its policies. When I visited England the first time I was shocked at the openness and vulgarity on TV. I came away with the impression they are an extremely open society that tolerates all kinds of expression. For years I have associated the Left with free expression. I grew up in the hippie era and they were leftists. They were all aobut dissent, free love, experimentation, and free expression of ideas. What happened to them? Now they are the squares, trying to shut up people whose opinion differs from their own and force people into "acceptable" behavior. Now it's hip to be on the Right.

Dangerous absurdity
How could any reasonable person think that banning Michael Savage will do any good at all? His "borders, language, and culture" mantra speaks to the concerns that everyone with half a brain inevitably ponders as the U.S. melting pot is transformed before our eyes into a poisonous stew of irreconcilables because the idea of HEALTHY diversity (which should include diversity of opinions) has been pre-empted by ideologues on the left to ban discourse they dislike.

Banning him from England will increase the number of his listeners and readers. The pendulum inevitably swings. If it gets pushed further left it will swing further right, as surely as it does in the physical realm.

I can't help but wonder if revolutions as painful as the French and Russian ones are going to happen again, even within the few years I have left on this earth. "Western Civilization" itself has become an obscene expression in many parts of my beloved academia, just as "mother" became an obscene word in Huxley's Brave New World.

My friends and colleagues in the UK don't seem to be consciously concerned about the Muslim problem - maybe they're just keeping a stiff upper lip, but whatever it is, they have a HUGE problem there. These Muslims are NOT nice people, and certainly don't have Britain's best interests at heart.

I would hate to see Britain fall to Islamic law from within because they weren't as defensive about their own self interests as they have been in centuries past.

This culture war between the Muslims and the rest of the world has to be recognized and then defeated by those countries that want to retain their own identity and culture.

This includes the United States. We are also vulnerable to the increasing Muslim influence, and we also must determine if we are a Judeo-Christian nation based on law - or not.

Time is running out for all of us.

I like our Judeo-Christian heritage and our system of laws - they have done well for us in the past, and our national problems surface and increase when we ignore them.

We ignore the events going on around us at our children's peril.

when I trucked through the San Fran area and before he was syndicated nationally. He was a hoot, very smart and generally right on. I've even called him to gently nudge him back on track with some personal knowledge I had to share. His response was to yell at me and hang up on me. Screw him!

Whether I agree or even listen is besides the point as he is not inciting riots and the Brits have stepped in it up to their eyeballs with this inanity.

If we had a gubmint with any gonads, they would put Ms. Smith on our watch list. She is obviously not stable enough to allow entry into our country.

One of the biggest differences between Brits and Americans, when it comes to Muslims, is that most people in Britain know Mulsims. I worked with several and played cricket with several for years. The overwhelming majority are decent, law abiding people with exactly the same hopes and aspirations as the rest of us. How many people here actually know any Muslims?

Back in the third grade
In 1951 all of us moppets were expected to memorize Voltaire's most famous saying, translated into English but losing none of its original power: "I don't agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

We grew up admiring this statement almost as much as we admired the end of slavery and the defeat of Hitler.

English censorship
This is not the first time in very recent history England has imposed selective censorship. Another such law forbids criticism of Islam, while all other religions are fair game. Censorship and gun laws are the main reason we separated from England. If England were not a nuclear nation, I would just as soon abandon the entire island to the Muslims.

I can remember back about 10 years when Michael Savage was the first to try to tell us that we need to close our borders. Had we listened there may not have been a 9-11. I listen to his program regularly and respect his opinion. I guess that puts me in the category also, along with Hannity and Rush. We still need to close the borders. There is a lot of talk about what to do about Swine Flu. Close the borders. There is a lot of talk about the drug wars in Mexico and guns going south and illegal drugs coming into the United States. Close the borders. There is slot of talk about the huge expense of Illegal Mexicans coming into this country to get free medical help. Clso the borders. Bush signed a law in 2004 to build a fence. Families of them live in my partially subsidized building and some of their children come to the inner city mission I used to volunteer at where I got to know them personally.

They avoid associating with the native population, preferring instead to congregate exclusively with their own, maintaining their cultural and religious identities. Most are on some form of human services assistance and have large families, usually of three to five children.

They drove the mixed population of poor native whites and immigrant Russians out of a subsidized housing area named Bayside and now claim it as exclusively theirs.

I gather you live nowhere near anything resembling Dearborn, Michigan or Lewiston, Maine, do you?

Mediocre Britain has previously imposed selective censorship, such as banning criticism of Islam while Christians and Jews are fair game. We revolted over censorship and King George's attempts at gun control. If Mediocre Britain were not a nuclear power, I would say say let the Muslims take over. Muslims eat sheep, and that is what the British populace has become.

Apparently, you need to buy yourself a clue. In the first place, Michael Savage is not exactly fond of, nor really enamored by most of the talk hosts you cite...his views tend to be far more extreme than they are...so much so that there are a few who wonder if he is a cariacture.

That said, the British did go too far with their "blacklisting" of a talk-show host who may be acerbic, but has done nothing to foment violence...particularly in comparison to Al Sharpton and the connection to the vandalism of Korean and Jewish-owned businesses. Unless they have proof beyond a reasonable doubt, this action only serves to make him more popular.

Re the English "not knowing how to handle free speech"---where did you think American law came from? From English Common Law. And by custom and tradition, free speech has long been honored in England, I would say moreso than here. (Any parent has heard this defense before: "I didn't really hit her---that was just a love pat---I was just playing---can't she take a joke?".

There is a saying that goes: "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention"

Savage displays genuine outrage at what he sees as the decline and deliberate destruction of the greatest social experiment mankind has devised which is the appropriate sentiment for such developments. Anything less would simply be show business calculations.

I actually like listening to Savage when I am on a long trip. He (or the character he plays, it wouldn't at all surprise me if when he retired he announced he beleived none of what he said) is so clearly insane that he makes a caricature of right wing positions. I like Savage. Too bad he was replaced by a less entertaining host in Herman Caine, who would have made a good senator I suppose but is frankly boring as a talk host. The SCOTUS is pretty protective of the First Amendment...see ACLU v. Reno and Free Speech Coalition v. Ashcroft for just two examples.

Actually in China, there is much more freedom to express your opinions even against the government than you suggest. It is not like the US though and if you were to say start publishing or promoting the idea of Taiwan independence for example, the government would be quick to stop you, but it isn't North Korea either.

What do they do with drug dealers--actually it is smugglers, but I get the point--in Singapore and Laos? Neither are majority Muslim. Discrimination against women in Malaysia is illegal and became part of the constitution in 2001. Malaysia also ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1995. Something the US has signed but has failed to ratify.

No doubt that there are Islamic countries with less protection for women than Malaysia, but that is a cultural issue isn't it...women don't fare to well in India either a Hindu majority state. Just because a state is Muslim doesn't mean that it will automatically be hell on earth for women.

The anti-slavery charge was struck as you know by pro-slavery southerners, and again you are back to 1776. By then there were various "abuses" from the anti-loyal colonists point of view anyway as there is in any war. I am sure plenty of southerners felt the same about Lincoln in 1862 or 1863. But the key objection that began this whole thing in 1764 as a result of French and Indian War--a war they themselves started--was taxes...taxes needed to raise funds for their own protection. Why should someone in the West Indies or East London pay more for the protection of people in New York? As I said, those outside the American colonies would have viewed the colonists as ungrateful spoiled brats.

For example, a guy I know from Taiwan, had a spot in a language program, was married and had children and very unlikely to overstay his visa, yet AIT (a'holes in Taiwan), the de facto US Embassy in Taiwan failed to grant him a visa. In another case, a consular official in China didn't grant a visa to a Chinese because he had never heard of the company the Chinese had worked for and it was one of the biggest companies in China...like applying for a visa from the US and working for Exxon and being told they had never heard of it.
