Arlen Specter and Other Magic Bullets Aimed at the GOP

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

As many know, it was an ambitious lawyer named Arlen Specter, working on the Warren Commission inquiry into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who is credited with having conceived of the "single bullet" theory that somehow established that Kennedy's only assailant was Lee Harvey Oswald.

The theory has been termed by skeptics as the "magic bullet" theory. Those critics portray that bullet as having curved, spun and changed directions on its way to Kennedy's head. That's the only way, they say, that Oswald alone could have killed him.

Now Specter has become a living personification of his single bullet theory, this one aimed at the Republican Party, and "fired" when Specter switched to the Democratic side of the U.S. Senate. The GOP faces many other potentially mortal magic political bullets.

Combined with the likely eventual seating of funny man and soon-to-be U.S. Sen. Al Franken, Specter's bullet will have delivered on many issues a filibuster-proof Senate. And with that filibuster goes the last morsel of power the Republicans had in Congress.

No matter how hard they deny it, Republicans must face the fact that Barack Obama has high approval ratings after his first 100 days in office.

Moreover, the Democratic Congress has essentially taken the emergency economic actions started under President Bush and somehow managed to now have government owning banks, insurance companies and car manufacturers. (And in the case of the automakers, the potential owners are both government and unions.)

The same Congressional majority has proposed an almost incomprehensible mountain of debt. As a result, they are scaring the daylights out of core conservatives and some independent voters.

But it does no good to be convinced a ship is sinking if most of the other passengers are dancing on the decks and toasting the captain. Most Americans see stimulus efforts and government intervention as being proactive fixes to what ails America, rather than the start of a slippery slope toward socialism.

There are other magic bullets besides Arlen Specter in the Democrats' bandolier, and they're using them shrewdly. For one, no one likes credit card companies, not even the so-called rich. So the Obama administration is going after them at quick speed. That's a shiny bullet that only makes him more popular.

And in tough economic times, it's only natural for people to resent those who've received huge pay bonuses, or who fly in private jets. So, given the mandate that was actually created in the last months of the Bush administration, the Obama team and the Democrats in Congress are now aggressively targeting excessive bonuses, lavish lifestyles and other over-the-top actions by executives whose companies received bailout funds. Many conservatives see this as an even deeper extension of government into the private sector, and an even stronger effort at promoting class envy.

But most Americans aren't consumed with the issue of government intruding into free enterprise. They want to see anyone who appears to have been rewarded for "failure" punished. Voila -- another magic bullet that only adds to Obama's popularity.

Obviously the press is still enamored with the new style of this president and first lady. Again, that's a fact that can be cursed all day long, but is not likely to change anytime soon.

The truth is that the Republican Party is reeling and there appears to be no immediate hope that it can steady itself, much less launch a new offensive that has much of a prayer of being effective. Explaining why tax cuts are good really doesn't matter when, because of our system of withholding taxes from paychecks, polls show that most Americans don't even know how much they pay in income taxes, and a near majority in surveys say, "I didn't pay anything" or "I received a refund."

These are cold, hard facts that most Republicans and conservatives don't want to hear. But as a pollster who must be completely objective when polling, let me assure you they are all true.

After suffering wounds from various magic bullets, a patient must be X-rayed and thoroughly examined to determine what, if anything, can be done to save his or her life.

It's time for the GOP to understand that until it properly diagnoses why it's slowly losing its lifeblood, it's likely to keep losing its pulse. Only after the diagnosis is made and new blood is pumped into the Republican Party will it perhaps start to find some magic bullets of its own.

Not so magic bullet
The current political climate shows the shallowness of a percentage of the voting public.

These small minded jealous people will learn to late. The price for this lesson will be great.

Bradley Effect
Hmm I am a little skeptical of this article for one reason, and that is the incredible enthusiasm for the tea parties.

The problem with high approval ratings is - take a look at what perecent of the popular vote the pollsters claimed Obama would win vs. the actual percentage. They were not even close.

Let's consider the Bradley effect, which proved accurate during this election cycle but is not being mentioned to explain his approval ratings. Now take a look at how Americans feel about his policies - a lot of his moves receive less than 50% approval by the public. I would say the approval rating has some pretty serious bias in it due to the Bradley effect.

So let's assume for a second that I am correct in my supposition, and take a conservative 5% off his approval rating [I believe most pollsters predicted he would have more than 10% higher counts in the popular vote than he actually achieved]. Now his approval rating is already 3% less than Bush's at the same period of time. So he has an 8% lower approval rating.

I think my reasoning is more reflective of reality than the actual polls, especially considering the low marks he usually gets for his individual policies [no one can call you a racist for being against a policy].

In any case, it would be nice for some pollsters to grow some nads and start trying to control for the Bradley effect, as this last election proved it is very real.

"Republican Brand Is Tainted"
said Lindsay Graham.

Dangerous Hate Crime Legislation passed.
Dangerous Hate Crime Legislation passed.
Hate Crimes legislation has just passed in the House of Reps.

Hate Crimes legislation will be twisted and misinterpreted to mean anything.

The purpose of hate crimes legislation is to take away our freedoms. INcluding freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Hate Crimes legislation is intended to silence the pulpits around the country.

Do not let the Senate pass this legislation.

OBAMA has promised to sign it

J-10
"The current political climate shows the shallowness of a percentage of the voting public."

You're right there, Pal. When we choose people like Sarah Palin, Plumber Joe, Michelle Bachmann and Miss California as the face of our party and our resident intellectuals, we definitely have a long way to go.

As for hate, we're already learning the lesson. Michelle Malkin and Rush are the hare Royalty, posters on TH are learning the language for it as we speak.

In the past 2 days, I've read such brilliant suggestions on TH as 1. Obama spent all the TARP money buying Spector; 2., A suggestion that Obama started the flu in order to get
Sibelius approved (because he loves killing little babies, of course) and 3 - Democrats are just evil pigs out to destroy the country.

Now THAT'S s picture of hate, you're absolutely right.

republican brand
Graham is right,it is he,McCain,Specter, snoe and Collins that tainted it.That is why people would rather be called a conservative.

J-10
Gee, after posting the above I went to another thread and found yet another example of conservative "non-hate":

A poster said

"Here's hoping arlen sphincter's cancer switches parties, from remission to malignant."

J-10. maybe you should take your claim out of the the future tense- people have just LEARNED to hate, they have become past-masters of it.

Stick to TH and give credit where credit is due.

Fred
I've read a lot of comments on th lately but I guess I missed those. They certainly prove that we're all a bunch of nuts though. It's a wonderful game looking at your guys with rose colored glasses and vilifying and ridiculing the opposition.

I think that as far as politics is concerned, Atlas shrugged and went home decades ago.

Credit card campanies
The over the top bad practices of credit card companies were made possible with the help of Republicans who have blocked every kind of consumer protection.

Consumers dislike for credit card companies is well deserved and going after them is just one way of showing how life in America is different when you have a pro-consumer administration and congress. This may have only been a throw away paragraph in you column but for consumers it is a symbol a wedge issue if you wish. That it will take a fillabuster proof majority to get credit card companies to stop the worst practices like universal default, changig rates at random, and phoney beloney games with dues dates shows how deluded the Republicans in the Senate have become.

Hey People,
the polling in a generic ballot pitting a generic democrat against a generic republican now holds a 41% to 38% advantage for republicans. The last time the republicans held similar numbers?
1993.
obama isn't going to help democrats next year and they know it.

Far Right Party cannot win
A far right party cannot win. The democratic party has become the party of conservatives, Moderates, liberals, and the far left.

The Republicans are becoming more ideologically pure which translates into permanent minority status.

The tipping point of socialism
has not been reached; it has been breached. We now have a vast majority of voters who pull the lever based upon 'what's in it for me' and nothing more. This is a situation that will take more than a generation to reverse, if ever. And, it will only come on the heels of economic cataclysm, one far more devastating than Carter.

We conservatives can point the finger at Obama and the dems, but we helped set the stage this time. The libs merely took advantage of the perfect storm:

- budget excesses rightfully tied to our own out-of-control party members.
-economic turmoil that resulted from the abandonment of conservative principles of freedom, responsibility and prudence.
- A president who thought he could 'get along' with dems.
- A president who was tone deaf to political imagery.
- a president who was utterly inarticulate.
- a media that used all the above to paint a picture of Republican failure on every level.

Unfortunately, within capitalism there are the seeds of its own distruction; the expectation of perennial affluence. It is a lesson that must be re-learned every 20-40 years. This time it will be particularly painful and lasting.

Op-ed
I would suggest that everyone read Christie Todd WHitman's op-ed in the New York Times today.

accept reality
Right on, my friend. Your causes look pretty accurate to me.

I was a depression baby. The lessons i learned early have stood me in good stead. I should make it through the oncoming turbulent economy ok, maybe even pick up a few bucks. Beachside condos are dirt cheap around here now. As soon as employment starts to rise, i'll buy one or 2. Just about the time inflation cheapens my social security, the rising rents should fill in the difference. One nice thing about having so many economic idiots around, its easy to make money off them.

So what you are saying
Republicans have no chance of getting our message out because the folks who voted the Democrats in don't even want to think about what their government is doing and how they are being taxed? They want their government to think for them no matter what that means. This administration is so adept at the slight of hand that these people don't even care that they are being deceived. The sad reality is that our children will be paying the price. Do we care?

Spectercide always a lib at heart

re:
"He started off as a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party, and has now simply confirmed his loyalty to the Democratic Party he never really left."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Indeed, Specter has just pretended to be a moderate RINO. There are 15 Jewish Senators and ALL are on the left. That is pretty good representation for a limited interest group-- they are less than 2% of the population, but 15% of the Senate.

Funny thing, this group pretty much always opposed (publicly) the War in Iraq, but their Zionist counterparts in the Bush Admin. (Wolfie, Abrams, Libby, Bolton, Perle, Feith, and Wurmser) crafted the Bush Doctrine and talked him into taking out Iraq per the PNAC/AIPAC agenda-- to get permanent American bases there to protect Israel. This is why the cost now approaches $1 TRILLION-- not mainly for troops, but for base construction.

Note how Dubya and Cheney are now cold toward each other over the failure to pardon Libby... Daddy Bush's guys (Baker, Scocroft) finally convinced Junior that he (and America) had been snookered into what 80% now consider was a profligate mistake-- the war of choice against the wrong bad guys for fallacious reasons.

JMO51
JMO51, you showed perfectly the gullibility and stupidity of democrat voters and why they are still power losers after so many years of communist support.

Your post about the credit card companies illustrates why democrats have no business voting or participating in civic affairs. Yes, your string pullers are enacting legislation to make them behave. . . . next year. By then they'll have the rates on you and all your other financial moron deadbeat parastic friends sky high so they'll be fine when they're "frozen" by the new law.

Because you do not think, gather facts and draw valid conclusions, you are never able to realize how you are manipulated. Your displeasure in life is because you are stupid. It's as simple as that.

You need to stop taking out your misery on your country and your resentment out on us. Instead, direct it to your parents who abandoned you and neglected to properly mold you into rational citizens.

Finally, I am praying that Arlen Spector's cancer comes back and causes him a painful death right after he sees a crushing election defeat and learning his wife left him for a raggae singer in Jamaca.

Happy Mother's day, everyone. Peace.

Dems don't care about kids
they willfully murder them in the womb or consider them potential cashcows to tax down the road to support their communism.

I am appalled that my 3 great grandchildren who are all under age 3 are already in debt to the feds to the tune of 12,000 each thanks to this miserable excuse for a president.

Does anyone think he is looking out for the next generation? How can anyone who loves their children support stupidity like this?

Why should they bother to succeed only to see the fruits of their labor be given to others who think they are "entitled" to it?

What I see going on today disgusts me, this narcissistic fool derides the tea parties, yet claims he wants a debate....the only thing this liar wants is power.

Liberals have never been able to see the big picture, that's why they should never be allowed control over the countries defense, we will rue the day this clown crawled out from whatever rock soros turned over in Chicago.

Wait Until the Tax Rates Increase
To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the death of the Republican party are greatly exaggerated. Everything is very rosy for Democrats now. Who doesn't enjoy and revel in a high-priced meal at a five-star restaurant before the bill comes? However, when the bill comes and is handed to the diners, who doesn't find fault with something, especially if the diners can't afford to pay?

In the same way, wait until the American people have to pay for all of the new legislation enacted now for which they haven't been presented with a bill. Foreign appetites for American debt isn't bottomless. At some point the bill has to be paid and boy, is it going to be painful in both inflation and tax hikes. Of course polls show Americans favor Obama...now. In two or three years, I wonder if the polls will show such support? I suspect many folks won't know what hit them. What happens when the current mounting unemployment numbers don't improve? Americans have no patience. The same reasons Democrats were able to sweep the WH and Congress will damn them down the road. Republicans better have a come-to-Jesus moment to prepare for that day. They need to keep showing fundamental differences between themselves and Democrats otherwise, they'll be branded "Dem-lite" forever.

But, altho' 67,000,000 voted O
62,000,000 did not.

O really has no mandate and had no landslide, and even tho' the media is covering every gaffe and stupidiy, nothing O has done will help the private sector recover, the one that makes real jobs and produces real wealth, and people's pocket books will eventually show the rottenness of O in O Land.

SPECTER OUT IN 2010

.....SPECTER IS SUCH A SLIME BALL THAT EVEN DEMOCRATS WON'T VOTE FOR HIM .....COLOSSUS

The True Sign of Decline
is when people go out of their way to ignore reality. And the reality is pretty close to what Towery writes.

Seriously, does J-10 think that insulting the majority of American voters is a way back to influence and power? DOes anyone think that wishing a painful death on a cancer survivor is going to bring in a few extra votes? Is there some recess of your mind where claiming that "Democrats have no business ..in civic affairs." is an effective rhetorical approach.

When you are in a hole, your first task is to stop digging. Or at least, try to get your fellow Republicans to put down their shovels long enough to realize the hole is getting deeper.

Sorry, but I disagree.
There's NOT a high approval rating for Black Marx either on Main Street, the rural countryside or suburbia. Just watch a weeks worth of episodes of 'Morning Joe' on MSNBC.

Obama's support comes, as we all know, from the liberal media talking-heads, big-city elites, the leftist university 'experts' and Democrat politians. Hence we're bombarded with 'everyone' likes the job Black Marx is doing. But everyone doesn't. Certainly not the majority of Americans.

That's why the Democrats and RINO'a like McCann, Lindsay Graham and the 2 queens from Maine are pushing to give voting rights to new comers by 'legalizing' the 20 million illegal aliens.

Dick Morris Article
From earlier this week states the recent poll numbers at this point reflect nothing but image (first 100 days yada-yada). None of his policies have really kicked in, nor have we seen any "heavy lifting" yet (tax and regulations). Sit back and watch how your average complacent American reacts to these policies. Right now Obama is not considered part of the economic problem by these people. If things stay the same or get worse then he will be and poll numbers will be the last thing he will want to hear about.

Educate the Specter voters
The Republic Party needs to examine the direction of our younger voters who favor Libertarian and Ron Paul. They believe in the Constitution, and support most of the Conservative views.

As for Specter, Goldman Sachs is a large supporter to his campaign. By switching parties, he'll get more funding, especially from George Soros, and voter turnout from Acorn.

mythology about ObaMessiah popularity
While the liberal MSM (Time, MSNBC, Newsweek, NYT, the old networks) are having those tingles up their legs, objective observers are missing KEY points--->

While the Glowbama is viewed favorably by 60%+, that is NO BETTER than Dubya was at the same point, and MANY thought he had stolen the election in 2000! [AlGore got more votes!]

More to the point, those who disapprove of the Chosen One are already about 30%-- HIGHER than Dubya's number at the same point.

WHERE is the unbridled adulation among Middle Americans?! And many have NOT yet begun to focus on the details of his leftist agenda.

The guvment will own half of GM?! That sure worked well in Europe-- and in communist countries.

gahotfrog
you write: "Hence we're bombarded with 'everyone' likes the job Black Marx is doing. But everyone doesn't. Certainly not the majority of Americans"

This is what I meant about being divorced from reality. Real Clear Politics averages the major polls to get one of hte best cross sections of opinion available. The lowest approval number is 55%, the highest is 69% and the average is about 62%. Your claim that the majority of Americans do not approve of Obama is ludicrous in the face of the facts.

You folk live in a a fantasy world.

RINOS wandered off the reservation

It is simple to understand why the RINOS screwed the real Republicans-- Dubya and the neoCONS largely grew guvment and squandered $ on Iraq, which perhaps 80% now think was an arrant mistake.

I voted for Dubya 2x as the presumed lesser evil (a Hobson's Choice, really), but he sure stunk up the place.

He spent $ and grew guvment (Rx Care for Seniors) like a drunken sailor Crat.

He let the neoCONS (whose REAL motive was to take out Iraq for Israel) snooker him into a profligate war against the wrong Islamics.
Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11, and secular Saddam and zealot Osama were opponents on different pages.

Worst of all, like various other CINO/RINO's, he effectively embraced ILLEGAL aliens via neglecting to secure the border and failing to enforce EXISTING laws... now we are stuck with 20 million soon-to-be-democrat voters... the left and the Chosen One cannot wait to enfranchise them (they need not be citizens to vote either).

Talk was cheap about defending America, while the REAL threat was allowed to flood across the border and permeate social pathologies (crime, drugs, gangs, identity fraud, illegitimacies, tax and welfare fraud, barrio blight, school decimation) like the Black Death.

Finally, Dubya effectively gave us the ObaMessiah, because "change" REALLY meant a repudiation of the failed Presidente Jorge Bush. America did not REALLY intend to embrace more big guvment, but that is what is being foisted upon us.

Changing the Republican Message
Republicans have to make this a States rights vs Federal rights thing. Anti-Federalism vs Federalism. Most people have common sense and know "too big to fail" equals "putting all your eggs in one basket" equals not smart. Unfortunately, Washingtonian Republicans have been just as awful as their Democrat counter-parts in thinking that big government is the solution not the problem. Also States rights gets the division out of the Republican party. No longer are abortion, gay marriage, etc national issues. They stay where they always were suppose to, as state rights.

Talking point 2 is what I call "find one person in Europe who believes that is a good idea." What most Americans don't know or don't want to know is all of Obama's future goals have already been tried and were a disaster. Universal Health Care has been tired across the global. No one (anyone please find someone, I am serious find someone) who has it thinks it works. Cap and Trade has been tried in Europe (3 times i think) and it failed miserably.

Talking point three: What places have unions politics and democrats taken over? Were any of those places successful. Michigan, California, New York. Chicago. Only more poverty, divisiness, and misery have come these experts at income redistribution.

Welfare: I would say Republicans are for welfare and put our money where our mouth is by donating time and money to charities. Also, educate on how welfare works. If you have a job you get drug tested. But if you are on welfare you don't. If they changed this welfare would drop to zero percent of the budget (except for the elderly). Any welfare and all welfare arguments should revolve around that.

You aren't going to convert the crazies, but you can convert the middle-class.

jasonrichardson011@gmail.com

inevitable
Nuclear and biological attack on major cities are inevitable. Texas and other states had best succeed when they can before they perish along with the rest of the fools.

Jason
WHile I think you are wrong, you do present a set of real ideas that do not revolve around a) acting as if everyone who disagrees with you is in league with Satan or a) pretends there is no real prolem at all.

Specifically, you should really rethink the way you challenge Obama's health care plans. Most Europeans are very happy with their health care. But you only wanted one person to tell you it works. Here is a story about an American's experince with German Health care, which she says was excellent. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91971 406&ps=bb2

Was it a strategy formulated by LBJ?
Since Spectre actually switched from Democrud to GOP in 1965--but never actually changed anything except the "party label", it beggars question as to whether the switch was LBJ's strategy to undermine GOP.

Percentages
I've always believed that the voting public can be broken down into three groups: 20% are die hard conservatives that know the issues and are informed about our government. 20% are far left kooks that hate America and everything it stands for. The other 60% are sheep that go which ever way the evening news, Saturday Night Live, Jon Stewart, and their local papers tell them to go. Sadly, this is not a good system for conservatives, but it explains how a complete idiot like Barrak Obama is now our president.

I need Assistance
This is a request for help from all TH conservatives. I’m sure that most of you are familiar with a little putz who calls himself “a.” Well I’m trying to set up a little fist applied rhinoplasty for the chicken sh!t chump and he is trying to dodge me. He claims he is willing to meet me, but only on a day I have already told him I can’t be there and only in a place 100 miles from my home. I have repeatedly told him that I will meet him on May 8 or any day after that he is willing to agree to. I will even drive 100 miles out of my way for the pleasure of educating the creep on manners. He won’t answer me now. He just runs and hides. You can read the whole thing on the thread on Brent Bozell’s column “A Hundred Days of Media Love” and judge for yourselves who is trying to duck the meeting.

So what I am asking is for everybody to put the pressure on. Do not relent. If he tries to talk about politics push the conversation back to meeting me. If he disappears from the column you are on, please hunt him down and keep pushing. I have done everything short of begging him to meet me at a time when I am free. I WANT HIM!!!

BTW if I get kicked off this site for being too belligerent please contact me at iam13Bravo at yahoo .com

Thank you.
P.S. I apologize for copying and pasting this on numerous threads.

Thank you, 13Bravo, for making it so abundantly clear why the GOP, and conservatism more broadly, is in the crapper.

'Everybody loves Obama'
Where do these 'polls' come from? I have never been asked, neither has anyone I know.

Towery is wrong
Obviously Towery is wrong that republicans have to acknowledge that Obama is popular. Obama is popular, but there is nothing in that fact to force republicans to acknowlege it. Did people see Byron York's interesting explanation as to why he is not as popular as polls indicate?

On another interesting point, I don't know if Specter is actually responsible for the single bullet theory. But the evidence now seems pretty conclusive that the single bullet theory is correct. A digital recreation of the Zapruder film shows that the path the bullet took was a straight line. That would be impossible to imitate with modern technology. So if Specter is responsible for that theory, then good for him.

13Bravo
I really understand your anger at these morons who come and waste their time here to do everything they accuse others of, BUT.

Do not allow this idiot "a" or any such troll who waste their time to try and insult you or any of us.

Ignore the fools, they have already fallen into the pit of their own worthless bile and hate.
Do not allow yourself to be caught up in their mindless insults at your person.

If you do, you have given him a power over you and that is the LAST thing you need to do.

There is no doubt in my mind you could twist his empty head off his shoulders, but he is not worth SPIT, let alone your time or anger

I can find a poll
That 100 percent believe Obama is a MORON.

Government Housing and Welfare Recipients, and selected numbers from their own lying heads

There is no logical reason
For such as we see on this thread from the Obama supporters.

They do him nor themselves any good here.
They come to do one thing, to insult and disrespect anyone who would even ask obama anything that questions his judgment or policies.

Its a complete waste of time to argue with these people who just want to provoke the hatred they are full of.
Their own hatred drives them to come here and post.

Its silly to allow any of the dishonest people who support obama to cause you to waste time trying to reason with them.

They do not want to reason, they want to hate everyone here who will not bow down to the idiot obama, the fraud and liar.

They actually love his lies and admire his bs.

why be surprised at all this?

This monstruous bitter pill is the vindication of Rush Limbaugh. He honestly stated he hoped Obama would fail.

For myself it's imperative that Obama fail. For the time being, let's hope he steps on a rusty nail!

Specter's return to Dems-big deal
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Democrats already had enough votes in the Senate to break any filibuster. And because he failed to vote consistently with the Republicans, there is really no change in Senate politics because of his return-yes, return-to the party he originally belonged to.

Specter's decision is all about Specter. He knew that he faced a tough party primary-he even started airing attack ads against Pat Toomey, three weeks before Toomey even announced that he had decided to run. For Arlen, it's about Arlen and keeping him in office.

I'd expect no less from the man who enabled Ira Einhorn's flight from justice.

Makes me sad to be a Pennsylvanian.

Response in San Diego
On a TV news program this morning here in San Diego, they asked people to write in about how they feel about Obama's first 100 days -- they had to search through about 100 messages to find one with a positive comment -- a 1% approval rating. San Diego is still pretty conservative; thanks to LA and SF, our state is in a big mess.

Hopefully independent voters will start to take a hard look at the democrats in Washington, who are jumping at the opportunity to ram through a socialist government, with Obama as the Salesman in Chief (he's on television again this morning). He was peddling a bunch of sugar-coated crapola last year and you guys bought it; please don't make the same mistake again.

Depends on Who's Poll!
The fact and the truth is that most Americans don't have a clue what's going on in Washington D.C. You only have to ask any average citizen at work or on the street and they don't have a clue if you ask - "What is the Hate Crimes Act?" or "What is the Global Poverty Act" or did you know we're now required to pay $460,000,000 of U.S. taxes for worldwide abortions?" or "What do you think of the president wanting to prosecute federal agents or their lawyers for a few waterboarding tactics to extract information?" Unfortunately, they've been sitting around watching videos and playing video games and watching porno TV movies and worshiping celebrities and reading about Obama's glistening pectorals - and making a living to earn a little "change" - Sorry, but try it and you'll find out that those polls mean nothing - because it's the minority of people who spend time researching - investigating - and attempting to protect conservative values in America.

talent scout
so basically you are not for free speech right?
as i have repeatedly said for the past 5 years that i have been here, that i am here to exchange ideas and have my own ideas challenged.

i have met many articulate and intelligent conservatives and have modified some of my opinions because of it.

on the other hand, it worries me that so many conservatives want to retreat to a world where they only read and hear media that reinforces their own opinions.

there is something anti-democratic about that.

the essence of democracy is exchanging and arguing over ideas.

part of the problem, IMHO, for conservatives is that they have surrounded themselves with media and people who agree with them, and hence, have lost touch with many americans.

i will give you an example, yesterday, all conservatives here posted a poll from rasmussen that said that obama ranked seventh in approval for the past 9 presidents.

now, no other poll had him that low, not pew, gallup or wall street journal.
in fact, rasmussen was not even doing polling until the 21st century so he made up those polls for past presidents or got them from a poll that agreed with him.

rasmussen in the past worked for world net daily.

to paint your reality by using only media that agrees with you simply puts you in a position to think everyone else is crazy and that is why you get so angry and can't understand why people find obama likable.

his favorablilty number was at 81% yesterday in a wall street journal poll.

while here at townhall it is at 0.

there is something wrong when with that picture.

now i have tried to be sincere and honest so don't blast me, just consider what i am saying.

Republicans Movin' Past D's !

A la contraire, I believe that Rasmussen has been among the more reliable pollsters generally... Gallup and Harris among others have had definite liberal tilts.

Shortly after the Rep. Convention, there was a CLEAR shift toward Amnesty John... sevral polls had him in the lead with the initial enthusiasm for Palin. Then the economy began to turn south badly, giving the ObaMessiah the hammer he needed as the alternative.

There had never been any genuine buzz FOR Amnesty John... he was too much refried Presidente Jorge-- too neoOCN (100 years in Iraq), too open border, and too inept on the economy-- he picked a bad time for that candor!

Rasmussen's polls are notable for their use of automated public opinion polling, involving pre-recorded telephone inquiries. These types of polls have been shown to produce accurate results at low cost, although some traditional pollsters are skeptical of this methodology and prefer traditional, operator-assisted polling techniques. Polls by Rasmussen Reports are cited regularly by most major news sources, and as a guest analyst Rasmussen has appeared on a number of news broadcasts, including the Fox News Channel, the BBC, CNN, NPR, and CNBC.

Towery certainly is gifted at spewing a litany of troubling signs for the Reps, a lot of it with the patina of RINOism as salvation. However, nothing he offers up is possessed of compelling insights or commands a convincing inevitable dark vision of the future. Much better political and polling minds than Towery--among them Rove, Morris and Krauthammer and Buchanan--are reading clear early signs of a revivial in the Rep party and the conservative movement. Was Towery sleeping during the Tea Parties, for example?

If you're troubled by the decline in Mother America, you can crawl into a corner, curl up in a fetal position and suck your thumb or you can organize, rebuild and fight back on a platform of true conservative principles.

Americans have always hated success!
This is a country that is currently driven by hate. Hatred of Bush, media hatred of religion, hatred of those with more material success, hatred of the young, hatred of the old, hatred of medical doctors, etc.

Americans as a whole are ignorant about most things other than "American Idol" and who will survive the next challenge on reality TV. That ignorance has been fueled by the media, Hollywood, and especially by public school education. After fifty years of public education, Americans do not know the difference between an economic cycle and a menstrual cycle.

Democracy and constitutional freedom cannot survive under such a level of profound ignorance. We are not on the edge of a slippery slope, we are well down it. This current administration and congress will destroy Jeffersonian Democracy and the U.S. will devolve into a near-third country status.

To top it all off, I heard a black man say on the radio just yesterday that blacks have a black man at the helm and they are glad that "white folk" are suffering such distress. He further stated that blacks do not care at all if the country is destroyed. (This on the Michael Medved radio show.)

In answer to your question, yes! In about 75% of the cases. But I also believe that the majority of white Americans do not understand what is involved in maintaining a Democracy. All one has to do is observe the "big me" society of today and it becomes pretty self-evident.

It might help to read the Federalist Papers, the writings of Jefferson and Madison, and others of the founding fathers to realize how delicate maintaining a democracy is. Each generation has to earn it. What have you done? Letting government run our affairs and worshiping the "charisma" of a socialist leader will not qualify as "earning" it. Jefferson himself said that our country was not immune to governmental despotism. That only an educated citizenry could prevent that. That is why it was called an "experiment" in democracy.

Socialism run rampant becomes Communism or Nazism. Pope Paul II called socialism an inherent evil because it destroys the dignity of the individual.

If you are a product of the public school system you may not know about Jefferson, Madison, et. el., but ignorance of history is no excuse.

By the way, how do you know that black people do not call Medved's show, especially since that episode was devoted to his having black people call in regarding Obama. It appears that you jump to a lot of conclusions without benefit of facts. But, most liberals do.

Tammy from Illinois; want to explain how the RINOS will save the Republican Party? Kinda looks like to me they helped destroy it.
However, I will give you one thing. Unless they get rid of the Neo-cons (which I doubt) they will once again produce a mediocre candidate like John McCain. The Neo-cons have all the money and power and THEY will determine who the next Republican candidate will be.
They're gonna have to come up with a "Whiz Banger" that is more conservative and they couldn't find one in 50 States before. It will be interesting to see in 2012.
Both parties as of the present are interested in becoming part of the Global Community and I'm not. That's why I joined the Constitution Party.

Tammy
In answer to your question, Yes! In about 70-75% of the cases. Not only did I hear it on the Medved show, but as one involved in higher education for 30 years, I believe it from personal experience. By the way, how do you know that no Black people listen to Medved's show? Especially since this episode was devoted to having black people call in regarding Obama. Are you selling black folks short? But then you missed the point of my comment, which referred to both white and black people.

Apparently you do not realize how delicate maintaining democracy really is. Each generation has to earn it. Letting government run our daily affairs, our businesses, etc, while worshiping a "charismatic" socialist leader does not qualify as "earning" it.

Perhaps if you were to read the "Federalist Papers", and the writings of Jefferson, Madison, et.el., you might begin to understand. Jefferson said we were not immune to governmental despotism. That only an educated citizenry could prevent it. That we might even have to take up arms against our own government.

Pope John Paul II said that socialism is an essential evil because it destroys the dignity of the individual. We are well on the way!

You may not have read Jefferson, Madison and other founders of our country if you attended the public school system, but ignorance of history is no excuse.

Two generations in a row, the meanest generation (60's & 70's) and generation X have paid no price.(Except for those few in uniform who sacrifice daily) How can we ever find those who will save our country from the enemy within? The Military can't do that.

Previously you have stated that capital punishment is immoral. As one who claims to honor GOD how do you reconcile that statement with God making it a part of His covenant with Israel, and further stating in the book of Romans (after Christ, BTW) that the government does not hold the sword in vain. Hopefully I don't need to point out that swords are not used for spankings, but the meting out of death.
There are many more issues of government that you seem to favor that GOD has made clear in His word are not his will. Government transfer of wealth for one. Certainly the murder of infants in the womb. Any government that advocates for homosexuality. I could go on, but have to wonder how you can support the people you do, and claim to be a follower of Christ. Many on that day...

lenard
as far as your government transfer of wealth, there is simply no scripture to back you up.

paul traveled from church to church to collect money for the Christian jews.

more importantly, why do you think it is ok for you to demand government take money for defense purposes but then turn around and say it is against the scriptures to use money for the poor.

do you actually think Jesus would agree that it is better to use taxes for weapons over the poor.

if you do, your understanding of scripture is sorely lacking.

lenard
In Psalm 72, King Solomon reflects on his role as a head of state, and asks God to help him rule:
1 Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.

And what will justice and righteousness look like in a monarch? We more commonly use “justice” to mean “punishment,” as in “bring Saddam to justice.” And “righteousness,” in 21st-century English, describes a person who doesn’t do the sins we find most objectionable.

But justice and righteousness are much more actively positive in Bible-talk. Here’s how Solomon describes their impact on a king:

4 He will defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
he will crush the oppressor. …
They’re active! And they affect the monarch’s foreign policy:
11 All kings will bow down to him
and all nations will serve him.

And why?

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.

Like Jesus, Solomon sees the “weak and the needy” as “precious.” Solomon sees special care for the needy—even special affection for the needy—as a characteristic of government blessed by God. Like Jesus, Solomon does not care for the needy because he fears for punishment if he doesn’t. He does it because they are precious to him!

lenard
.): In the New Testament, notice the similar tone of Romans 13, where Paul writes that all governments are “established by God,” and accountable to him to do good and to punish wrong

. Again, the charge to secular government is two-fold. And remember, in Jesus’ eyes, standing-by while the poor suffer is wrong, and he sternly warns the rich that they may be punished for it.

Could God be pleased by voters demanding that their government collect taxes to care for the poor?

God views neglect of the poor as evil, worthy of punishment. Further, he holds governments responsible for making sure that the needs of the poor are defended. The Bible assumes that some will ignore the poor or deprive them of rights that the rich enjoy, and God charges government with the responsibility for correction and prevention of such sin.

Taxation seems like a pretty mild way of enforcing a minimal level of shared responsibility for the human family, where people have failed to take it upon themselves. I say “mild” because God enjoins government to defend and support the poor, even to the extent of Solomon’s “crush the oppressor,” and (in Romans), government is “an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the evildoer.”

Perhaps this is where our culture is most at odds with the Bible: Neglect of the poor is sin. Wealth is evil unless it results in sacrifice for others. Once again, how different from modern practice, where gaining wealth is esteemed for its own sake

lib
You never answered my questions, and the charge for the poor is for individuals. To suggest that the government is in some way the same as the individual is absurd. Actually to make the government the agency for such is an abdication of responsibility. Further God put limitations on caring for the poor which our Federal government doesn't. Take gleaning for example, this was not a handout, but something that required hard work.
As for authority, remember the federal government is in constant violation of it's authority as enumerated in the Constitution, and for you to get behind those who usurp authority shows further contempt for that passage in Romans.

LIB AND TWISTING OF SCRIPTURES
You use Paul going from church to church to collect money as analogous to government. You have perverted scripture to justify your philosophy. First this was the church, a people in covenant with God, which the government is not. Second this was voluntary, and not coercive. Third, those poor were not the poor in general, but fellow believers. Fourth, while God does call on those who are believers to give to the poor, He says this to individuals and the church. He does not say that we are to use the government for this, despite you're misunderstanding of the government doing good in Romans 13. Doing good has to do with justice and protecting the people. This is manifestly clear throughout the history of Israel. It is also the context of which Paul was talking, what good? Answer, the sword. Fifth you say I have no scripture speaking against the transfer of wealth. Untrue. First there is no scripture giving government authority to transfer wealth, so really your position has no scriptural support. Second, and just for beginners, Proverbs 13:22 says a good man his leaves an inheritance for 2 generations, yet our federal government has an inheritance tax, which denies one the ability to carry out this God given precept. God also makes distinctions about who money should be given to, and the lazy are not in that grouping. Sixth, if you want the government to be an instrument of God, it must first covenant with Him, that means submitting to His authority, and that would include protecting the innocent, such as children in the womb.

more twisting by lib
God holds the rich accountable, but does not say anywhere in Scripture that the government is to determine what would be right to do. You have once again twisted scripture to suit your philosophy. Further the oppressor that you speak of is not one withholding money, but unjustly using power for his gain, or to deny another the same application of justice that should be given to all. When the God speaks in the scriptures of favoring the rich, He is talking about appearing before the judge, or having laws slanted that would give one more benefit at the expense of another. He also says to not favor the poor in enactment of law, just because of pity.

lib
Yes the Bible clearly gives the mandate of weapons over giving to the poor, as far as government goes. I am supported in this, AGAIN, by Romans 13, by the History of Israel throughout the Tenach, and abundantly in that you have not one scripture speaking of GOVERNMENT using TAXES for the poor. Again this is for individuals. What you quoted from Solomon has to do with legal justice, not economic leveling. AND who is the most oppressed here in the US? Children in the womb. Do you think God overlooks this? No this most of all will and is bringing His judgement against us. And what segment of society is most having this wretched sin perpetrated upon them? The poor.

christianlib..man or God?
Christianlib the scripture says let God be true, but every man a liar. Why do I say that? Well you talked of denominations holding capital punishment as immoral. That is not the deciding factor, it is the word of God alone, and as I said earlier God made it part of His covenant with Israel, Jesus said that anyone who claims for one jot or tittle to be done away with is wrong ( a mild paraphrase) He actually came to fulfill the covenant, not do away with it, and He will send many to hell forever, and on that great and terrible day He will come with a sword. Again you chose to ignore Romans 13 which also speaks of the purpose of government to use the sword, and execute wrath. Both of those throughout scripture are capital punishment. AGAIN, AGAIN, nowhere does the scripture speak of man executing judgement for withholding from the poor. It is always God who judges, or curses.

lib and the wrong horse
Lib you back a man and party that work, actively work to kill children in the womb, actively violate the authority of states for their legitimate religious expressions. Remember the federal government may not have established religion, but states are free to do so. Actively espouse homosexuality, and even attempt to pass laws giving favor to those who practice such. You also back a man and party that continually usurp authority never given, as here in the US who has what authority is actually written and spelled out. Nowhere in the Constitution is the federal government granted authority to legislate on behalf of the individual. Remember authority is from God, so violations of such are not to be supported, but fought against.

lenard
you are badly misinformed even from a conservative point of view.

i will point out that Jesus Christ came to the world with a new covenant which over ruled the old testament and the "eye for an eye" dictum.

as far as romans here is conservative chuck baldwin on on romans 13, disputing your view.

It seems that every time someone such as myself attempts to encourage our Christian brothers and sisters to resist an unconstitutional or otherwise reprehensible government policy, we hear the retort, "What about Romans Chapter 13? We Christians must submit to government. Any government. Read your Bible, and leave me alone." Or words to that effect.

No doubt, some who use this argument are sincere. They are only repeating what they have heard their pastor and other religious leaders say. On the other hand, let's be honest enough to admit that some who use this argument are just plain lazy, apathetic, and indifferent. And Romans 13 is their escape from responsibility. I suspect this is the much larger group, by the way.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig8/baldwin1.html

finally lenard
i will pray for you because you are sadly lost in an angry isolated Christianity.

christianlib..prayer
As I said before, let God be true and every man a liar. You repeat a fallacy that comes about as a rejection of the Hebraic origins of the gospel. AS JESUS SAID "do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets...Anyone who breaks the least of these..and teaches others.." Matthew 5. Sir before judging me by statements, all of which were based on scripture, you would do well to at least attempt to give a scriptural basis for your position. You have not been able to do so. You have distorted God's call to individuals to making room for the government to coercively take from one person and give to another. That is stealing, not charity. You evaded every argument I put forth, and you attempt to justify backing murderers, and those espousing sodomy because in your eyes, some good is being done for the poor. I ask AGAIN, where in the scripture does God countenance money being taken from one person and given to another. Fine you're okay with it,but that's a not scriptural argument. Please, take apart my statements with scripture. You so far have not even tried to do so.

christianlib and chuck baldwin
Lib you should take a closer look at the quote from Baldwin, he is not endorsing your position. He actually is saying that government does do things that are wrong and should not always be obeyed. Again, you cannot avoid God here saying that the authority of government includes putting to death wrongdoers. God himself is going to send people to hell forever. God Himself has killed man. Have you never read of those who rebelled against Moses, and how God swallowed them up with the earth? You accuse me of being angry, yet you don't know me or my life, and base your statement from what seems to be an unwillingness to acknowledge what God Himself has ordained.

U ask "Where do all these Polls originate?" I always wondered too until last Fall I was solicited by *Polling Point*, I think out of PaloAlto, CA which SEEMED to be fairly objective at first.. Later I was asked something to the effect of 'How I felt about polls" and I honestly didn't trust them.. NEVER HEARD AGAIN.. I'm not a pollster, but I can present a question to get a favorable response so I pay little attention to 'em. UR CALL!!

As I said before, let God be true and every man a liar. You repeat a fallacy that comes about as a rejection of the Hebraic origins of the gospel. AS JESUS SAID "do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets...Anyone who breaks the least of these..and teaches others.."
