Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

I'm already weary of members of the Republican Party and other conservatives doing little else but throwing rocks at the new Obama administration. And that's coming from someone who helped build the party before many of today's pundits were learning to speak.

Barack Obama is president. Get over it, and start coming up with new ideas and counter-ideas of your own, instead of making hateful or smart-alecky remarks just to sell books or attract attention.

Take Joe Lowery as a subject of right-wing grievance. (I've known him for years, and he has actually helped Republican candidates on many occasions.) As part of the inauguration's benediction, Lowery recited an out-of-date and out-of-step little ditty from the civil rights days. Part of it dismissed whites as morally lacking.

So what? He's in his late 80s and isn't representative of anything but the past.

And the fact that President Obama had to retake the oath of office because the Chief Justice messed it up is interesting, but only that. It doesn't stand up to a claim that the Obama presidency is somehow illegitimate.

Listen up, Republicans and conservatives: Your party and your movement only rise when they produce new ideas. Ronald Reagan did it in 1980 with his approaches to things like taxation and fighting the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

And the Republicans who took over Congress in 1994 did so by unveiling a specific litany of government reforms.

By way of practicing what I preach -- however navely or haltingly -- allow me to outline the rudiments of a free-market approach to start getting us out of this economic slough we are in. This idea might at least help make a dent in the bailing out of our financial institutions without simply throwing good money after bad.

Start with a simple premise: We know that beautiful foreclosed homes in places like, say, Florida have subsequently been marked down in value (and by using an idiotic accounting method, but never mind).

Knowing that someday their full values will return, wouldn't you love to be able to buy some of those homes at dirt-cheap prices, and simply wait for their values to return or even appreciate? Ditto for strip malls, office complexes, hotels, and on and on.

The obvious problem, of course, is that most people in America don't have the resources to afford big bargains during this down time.

But now ask yourself this: Would you rather invest in a big-name company that could see its value plummet, or in a collection of assets that have reached rock bottom, but were once quite valuable?

Clear and simple, there'd be little downside and much potential in waiting for the windfall of these assets to return to value.

And now my idea: Why should these billions of dollars of allegedly bad loans, tied to greatly diminished assets held by financial institutions, be purchased by our tax money rather than by a public eager to someday reap potential financial rewards?

In most past recessions, the bounceback on assets -- often long-delayed -- can be in the double-digit percentiles. Would you not buy a "share of stock" in the "corporation" holding these assets? Maybe 100 shares? Perhaps many more if there was liquidity to spare?

I sure would, and in part because, just like during World War II with war bonds, I would be investing in helping to fund a fight that is critical to our nation's survival.

Equally important, I realize that I'm going to fund it anyway, if only through tax payments that I will never see again.

I think I'd rather pitch in for Uncle Sam by having the opportunity to see the "corporation" holding these assets gain substantial value in future years.

This proposal probably has a million holes in it. Readers, feel free to help me find them.

But let's at least get a dialogue going. Throwing rocks at a president with a 70 percent approval rating won't get America's entrepreneurial engines running again. Let's leave the venom to those who make their living milking it from their own fangs.

Advice you yourself should heed
I have seen very little "throwing" of "stones" except by liberals/Democrats (such as the stones thrown at Bush in the form of booing or the stones thrown at Mormons when Prop 8 passed or how about the stones thrown at Sarah Palin in so many ways it'd take forever to list them all!),

We live in a nation of free speech, so obviously, liberals are free to boo a President or threaten a Mormon or Christian or mock a v.p. candidate.

And, Mr.Towery, we, Republicans are just as free to air our grievances about Obama. Sure, he's our President now, and I would say we have handled it FAR BETTER than Democrats handled it when Bush was President. But, regardless, like I said, we are free to air our grievances and print our books and write our blogs. Maybe you should take your own advice and "get over it."

It is called checks and balances.
Pelosi just said, "We won the election", leaving no room for the Rep's to be involved in her abortion of the stimulus bill which is now a spending bill. With that attitude we might as well call Obama king.

Shut Up!?
That is the last thing the "People" need to do! Just because 70% or the voters became "Useful Idiots" the rest of us should roll over and take it! BS! We are disappointed that 70% of voters have chosen to elect a Marxists/Socialist as the President! He and the Demorat control are about to take the country deep into the cesspool of Liberal Socialism. Trashing our Republic and our Constitution as they do it!

Besides, that MR. Towery. You should direct your column and your ideas to your new president and the Demorat party not the "People." Go to them with your idea and see how fast they reject it!

Ovomit may be the president but I detest everything the monster stands for! I will never respect him or the Liberal congress no matter how many time you "go along to get along" columnists lecture us to do so!

I couldn't agree more.
Matt, thank you for your article.

It drives me crazy to hear conservatives grasp at every little thing when Republicans and conservative pundits have so much explaining to do for where we are on so many fronts.

I thought Lowery's poem was cute. There are only so many words you can rhyme with yellow, you know.

As much as I enjoy Rush Liimbaugh's brand of humbor, and Ann Coulter's wit, the fact is that conservatives have allowed the self-created caricatures of Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, et al, to become the "reality" that such manufactured "perceptions" create in the minds of the electorate at large.

That perception translated to a trouncing of Republican candidates in this election, just as it did in 2006.

At what point will these marketing-driven pundits realize that what drives ratings isn't always what creates enduring majorities? When the last state (Utah) goes blue too?

Considering that Barack Obama carried Salt Lake County in November, the fact is that we may not be that far away from that day already.

We Need to Play Defense AND Offense
Mr. Towery, as many conservative leaders, is prone to condescension. OK, he's right about having a plan to move forward. But we also have a duty to refute, repudiate and annihilate left wing idiocy. Joe Lowery was not just an old man in his last gasp. His low grade nursery rhyme became a big part of history. We have a duty to attack it.

Get Real Idiot
"Get over it, and start coming up with new ideas and counter-ideas of your own" your quote.

Reagan's idea was not new. It was as old as the constitution and would have loved to do more if that congress would have allowed him. I suggest we return there.

The problem with you an liberals in general. They want government to do what they or you did not do yourself.

You are probably like most Americans still hanging onto your 401k in stocks losing your buns and now want government to organize your next investment. Because you lost your wealth through bad management along with the majority of others.

One guarantee about life. Only a few get rich, otherwise it becomes middle class or poor.

Go save your own and invest. Government going to do it anyway?

How could they possibly understand economics when they do not realize who's money it is in the first place.

What You See IS the Future
"Take Joe Lowery as a subject of right-wing grievance. (I've known him for years, and he has actually helped Republican candidates on many occasions.) As part of the inauguration's benediction, Lowery recited an out-of-date and out-of-step little ditty from the civil rights days. Part of it dismissed whites as morally lacking."

The point you're missing is Joe Lowry was there for a reason, taking part in the Inauguration. That's because his "old ideas" are the ones being sold as "new," and Joe Lowry's screed against white male Christians is the future of this country.

You seem to think these people aren't going to govern, and the only way to oppose them is to join them in coming up with "new ideas." What is conservatism about, if it's not about conserving the "old ideas?" In fact, what is is about if it's not about the solid bedrock of the "old ideas."

You are wrong, this column is wrong.

Bush Had a 75% Approval Rating

There is nothing magic about Earbama. He is just an empty suit put up by Teddy K and the Chicago machine to counter the most unpopular administration since Jimmy Carter. On the economic front the best these guys will be able to produce is a stagnant economy. If promiscuous public work spending is the answer the Japanese economy would the strongest in the world. On national security, Bush used the clandestine services to pursue Al Qaeda in all the backward cesspools of the world. In contrast Leon Panetta is being sent to gut the CIA and the Democrats can't even run the Defense Department without Bush appointees. The odds of a catastrophic terrorist attack in three or four years are off the scale. Republicans need to reject the temptation to become communist light, revisit the Regan vision and this will work out.

new ideas?
What new ideas? I thought we already had a Constitution. Here's a novel thought, Don't vote for anything for which you have no Constitutional merit as given in Article 1, Section 8; Every bill that comes through to illegally appropriate money beyond that which Article 1, Section 8 stand up and tell the rest of your colleagues in Congress that to vote yes it to violate their oath and the law, and that they will be held accountable by the people; Then go have press conferences decrying these crimes and rouse the people; keep doing this until we have Constitutional government or the people rise up and take back what they temporarily ceded as stated in the ratifications of the Constitution. How's that for new ideas? Any Repub willing to stand up and do this? I got his back.

If Joe Lowery was ...
.. sincere about civil rights, he never would have mentioned that little bit about "white becoming right." But, he took a shot at being a race-baitor and is now being called on it. Those who dismiss his race-baiting are being called on it too.

It is not something we can simply forget as it shows the true character of Barack Obama and all those years he spent in a racist church.

Getting over it
Getting over it and being silent casts a wave of approval of the direction of our country. Republicans need a clear direction, a real plan, and a statement of ethics and moralities........we need Michael Steele!

Wake up America
The Obamanation is heading on repealing the constitution in the name of social justice.

Shut up and SHUT UP!
Matt, like your idea of the corporation buying these assets. But why take shots at your own instead of shots where they are deserved? Do you agree with Mr. 70%-Approval Rating? If not, shut up.

holes
As you mention most people don't have the assets to make large purchases. Financial institutions are unwilling to give mortgages to all but the most credit worthy customers. People are afraid of losing their jobs, homes, and savings, and thus are very reluctant to take on major debts. (Along with the high price of gas, these two factors are what pushed the automobile industry to the edge.) Also, how long until these investments mature. I'm 59, and I can't wait for 20 years for things to bounce back.

charley: Yes my investments declined due to bad management, but it wasn't my bad management. I put most of my money into an S&P 500 fund, and all 500 of them seem to be going down. Out of curiosity what is your investment strategy?

The Issue
The issue is that throwing stones will not result in winning future elections. The GOP lost the last two because it lost it's direction and it's message. And, if it does not provide an alternative plan to those advanced by Obama and the Democrats - it will lose the next one as well.

It's fine to criticize. But saying no, no,no solves nothing. Because if it's only no, then the unstated result of no - is do nothing.

And a do nothing party than can only say no - isn't something most people will vote for.

NO MORE
pot shots at Pres. Obama....Wait til he messes up and you have reason (other than he is a Liberal Democrat) then and only then will criticism be properly applied.

I do NOT like the idea of a Liberal in the White House, but face the facts:
1) He is not the first.
2) He won't be the last.

We can only hope for our First Libertarian Pres. in 2012

Saying No
I'm strongly in favor of fresh ideas and sounding positive rather than negative, but I'm not willing to agree that saying, "No," will push voters away. The Liberals have beem saying, "No," the past four years, and they've been the epitome of sounding negative ("We can't win in Iraq," "Bush allowed New Orleans to sink and die in Katrina," etc.) Yet, they won the presidency, the Senate, the House, and almost everything in between in this recent election. Saying, "No," didn't deem to hurt them.

The Myth of Obama
I intend to resist the myth, disbelieve it and disassociate myself from it!! I am not so needy and vacuous that I need to take a bite of this clearly poisonous apple. Nothing has changed as far as Obama's character is concerned. Can a man by taking thought add one cubit to his stature? I think not.

Shut up and lead?
What? The author ought to know that "leaders" are only found in demoracies, monachies, depotic nations, and the like. They are given free reign once they are in office. The democratic Republic of the U.S. was designed to be leaderless to prevent the abuse of power displayed by King George in spite of the English parliament. Obama is nothing more than the top cop sworn to "defend the constitution" by way of reigning in Congress by the power of his veto to prevent any act by Congress that doesn't conform to the constitution. I don't want the SOB's in Congress to "lead" me anywhere although I wish they would all shut up. I want them to LISTEN to their constituents and act accordingly WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE CONSTITUTION! Lead my eye---they are "leading" us into hell!

70% approval rating
I admit that I've had things to do, and have been somewhat out of the loop as of late, but please tell me how Obama has received a 70% approval rating. He received only 53% of the votes cast, and has only been president for three days. Where did the 70% approval rating come from?

osama
hussein osama will never mess up, for the next 100 yrs., if the world system exists, bush and the few repubs. that remain will be blamed for anything that goes wrong. Katrina keeps getting mentioned as a bush disaster. The best thing for new orleans is to make a landfill there and get it above sea level. If you build a house below sea level , one day, you will get wet.

Irene
Ditto. Who votes in these approval ratings anyway? I've never been asked. Isn't it a public rating?

All he's done so far as president is give a crappy platitudinal speech and close gitmo in a year with no idea where the prisoners will be relocated.

jimmis
You're right. We just had a public vote, wherein he got a 53% approval rating. I'm glad I'm not alone.

Where are the Leaders?
Is GOP Still a National Party? If you look at Bush's term and what McCain stands for you cannot say that they are the carriers of the conservatives' banner. They are both putrid hybrid liberals with a sprinkling of the conservative on some issues. We need new leadership with an iron will and true vision for America. The country is being flushed down the toilet of mediocrity and third world status. McCain is already positioning himself with B.O. to be his lap dog; pretty pathetic.

Smart Idea?

Matt Towery, what happens when one buys a property is they have another responsibility. To pay the taxes, insurance, and upkeep.
Have been searching for such a property as you describe and if one has deep pockets and can afford to maintain for years to come. Also replace appliances, heating & cooling, plumbing and drywalls etc, etc, then one day in the sweet by & by one will benefit greatly?

Do not fear Republicans maybe down but we are not out!
When people do not play by the rules as you will see in time this election was a sham.

Naturally we are sore but we will get over it.

You sound so glib. Hopefully we will not see anymore of your thoughts this year. Unless of course they do in fact improve.

I live in FL.

We are expected to celebrate this?

WAKE UP AMERICA!

This is one of the things that is causing us grief!

How many days has he been in office?!!! I, for one, do not appreciate MY tax dollars being spent for a cause that I do not support!

Officials: Obama to reverse abortion policy - Yahoo! News

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090123/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_ab ortion_ban

Now we can pay for abortions in all the third world countries.

Re Dr Lowery's "ditty"
As I've stated a few times on different postings, I heard that particular "ditty" recited/discussed by a good friend/co-worker who
happened to be Black in 1961 in Anchorage AK.I thought it, the poem, was intended to represent the *pecking order*, so to speak, within his area of Cleveland..I had NEVER had any contact with Blacks prior to 53 and didn't have "a problem" as far as I knew.. I don't think we NEED Mr. Lowery's *Thumb in the Eye* at this point in time.. I can live with it!!CAN HE??

"Can't we just all get along?"
I is a very rare thing to see a Democrat, (AKA Communist), come to TH without insulting the author of the thread and/or casting a broad generic insult at all Republicans.
Democrats often come here acting like little kids who have found a place to sass adults without being spanked.

They come here redundantly parroting lies about Bush like it is some kind of religious ritual forbiding them from using the abundant truth.

Leftists are habitual screwups that are consistent in error.
After the way they have conducted themselves here at TH, there is no way they are going to get a free ride on Obama.

Obama just tells whatever audience he happens to be speaking to whatever they want to hear, mixes in a generous measure of platitudes and goes to the next audience.
See?
http://www.nelsonguirado.com/index.php/asymmetric/2008/07/0 9/comprehensive-obama-flip-flop-list

Chickens are already coming home to roost;
http://www.mrc.org/cyberalerts/2009/cyb20090105.asp#2

Anyone who thinks republicans will fail to deride Democrats for their silly emotional choice of President each time Obama goofs has got to be very naive.

they speak for many of us
"Shut up and lead?" The Fairness Doctrine (by whatever name it will be called)is looming on the horizon. Shutting up is the last thing Hannity, Rush and the rest of those who speak for many of us should be doing. As Hannity says, "When Obama does something that is good, I will praise him...otherwise, I will oppose him." If you recall, Hannity and Rush and many others criticized President Bush when he did wrong.....it will be no different for Obama...at least, or until, the powers that be silence those who give voice to many.

Ever watch Keith Olbermann? You might try telling him to "shut up."

Finally...
someone saying the obvious! Simply pointing out why their ideas are so bad is not enough. Just ask Bob Dole how that worked out as a strategy. Unfortunately, the elected officials we have left that have a sizable audience are too few right now.
but there are plenty of columnists, pundits, and various talking heads to make our case...I propose that every one of them put forth a better alternative to EVERY criticism they write about.
That's the only hope we have to persuade the ignorant and naive.

Throwing Rocks??
Whatever do you mean?? We are showing him the same courtesy and respect that you lefties showed Bush for 8 years.

You now live in the Obamanation!

BTW Towery
Your article and your Bull SH*t don't go together. You just HAD to get another dig in at Republicans, eh??

Developing Alternative
Hey folks--stop yapping and start thinking and communicating good republican conservative ideas. This article presents one idea, I know that Eric Cantor has suggested some, so has Mitt Romney. What we need to do, is keep providing constructive alternatives. We need a National Committee (one forum--for example) that will communicate these alternatives. We need columnists and commentators that communicate the alternatives--there are better ways on all these issues than what has been suggested by Obama and the Democrats.
I think that is the point of the article.

Lowery isn't the only one
living in the past, dufass. You have defined yourself as a left wing fanatic by your own words. I found Lowery insulting ang I find you more insulting for trying to defend his insults and his racism.

Tough to Lead With Yestardays Playbook
Controversy and conflict among conservative thinkers reveals just how much trouble the Republican Party could be in over the near term. The validity of its’ core ideals may point to even greater troubles over the long term. From Fred Barnes to William Kristol to Michelle Bernard there have been calls for a new direction and an adjustment of conservative principles while ultraconservative Grover Norquist has said that calls for reform: “Will be cheerfully ignored.” Ms. Bernard has gone so far as to say that the Republican Party has shrunk to a regional party centered in the South and that it lost the 2008 election: “Because its message was disconnected from the majority of Americans.” But is it the message or the principals upon which the message is based that has given rise to this electoral disconnect? Fred Barnes, of the conservative “Weekly Standard”, has said that conservative principles must be adjusted so as to ensure election victories in the future but how far can you travel from your core beliefs before those beliefs become meaningless? The unprecedented government intrusion into the financial system last fall, with Republicans insisting on a partial government equity stake in banking, shows just how far the party’s’ policies have strayed from the twin ideological tenants of free market economics and limited government. This policy departure has in effect eroded the validity of these two very basic conservative concepts.
