Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It has been basically a known fact among the media that George W. Bush does not care for reading newspapers or the barrage of opinion columns that now seem omnipresent in this age of the Internet media. I really can't blame him.

So when in early December I wrote a "Dear Mr. President" for my national Creators Syndicate column about what a great First Lady Laura Bush has been, I did so noting that it was merely a vehicle for making my point. After all, Bush doesn't read media, right?

Wrong. Really wrong. Last week, I received a handwritten letter from President Bush expressing his thanks.

It's poor form to disclose any communication with a sitting president. And I don't want to exploit what was clearly a very kind gesture by the president. My purpose here is to reflect on what other possible myths and misconceptions we in media (and we across America) may have about this soon-to-be ex-president.

Bush made it clear to me in the letter that editorial columns do reach the Oval Office and that he does read many of them. So that myth is broken.

But what about the general perception that he has been a president unwilling to do things any way but his own? That he's a president unwilling to admit mistakes or change course?

In some very revealing interviews during his last weeks as president, Bush has made it clear that the intelligence he was given on weapons of mass destruction was in large measure wrong. That's a bold and introspective comment coming from a man who, understandably, would seek justification for the war in Iraq.

Now is the time for those who have been critical of the Bush Administration -- at times, myself among them -- to question ourselves: Did President Bush fail this nation, or did those tasked with serving him and the nation fail in their own right?

For example, it wasn't George Bush's desire to turn a blind eye to the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Instead, he was let down by those he relied upon to provide him with the accurate information needed to properly respond to the catastrophe. By the time Bush realized their shortcomings, it was too late.

On the housing market crisis, representatives of the Bush administration pleaded with lawmakers to rein in Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac long before things got out of hand. You should read the transcripts and hear the words of members of Congress as they mouthed off and stereotyped those giving warnings from the Bush Administration as being both generally misguided and downright racist.

And when the nation's financial institutions were crumbling, I am convinced that only President Bush really understood the emergency need for action to stabilize the situation. In his typical droll style, he warned leaders that "this sucker might go down."

Liquidity was freezing up, but more importantly, confidence in our nation's financial institutions was declining so quickly that most of them would have lost almost all of their investors had not drastic action been taken. You can bet Barack Obama knows that now. It is clear through his comments.

Has the bailout been implemented properly? I made my thoughts clear about that in my last column. But again, the point is that a president delegates duties to those he trusts. If they choose to operate in a secretive and ineffective manner, then it is they who have failed, and not the president.

As a pollster, I can't honestly write a column saying that George W. Bush is now viewed as a successful president. What I can say is that many of the current concepts we have about this president may prove, as time passes, to have been incorrect.

One thing I do know is that since 9/11, no major act of terrorism has happened on American soil. I am guessing we will come to learn just how hard the president worked to keep the nation safe. And President-elect Obama recently said that this is the most important priority for a president.

Every time I have written a column even slightly kind toward President Bush, I have been bled to death with the cuts of a thousand objecting e-mails, often from conservatives who normally agree with my opinions.

So I'll end with a simple public response to President Bush's kind letter and say, "Thank you, Mr. President." And as years pass by, it's my guess we might be thanking George Bush more than we can imagine today. Not for any letter he's written, but for his service to our nation. Time will judge.

It's awesome
How lucky you are. I many times as you wished the President would read the few words of support when he was being brutally attacked by the media and the Congressional and House Democrats. I also wanted to relay my gratitude and that of my family and military wives. There is an internal conflict and many heavy hearts in our military circles...all of them dealing with 7 days... the ones left to the pledge of loyalty that symbolices the change in Commander in Chief from one whose support is unquestioned to one whose lack of support is no mystery.

I will also agree with you that Mrs. Bush gentle, supportive wife and kindness will leave a void in the halls of the White House.

President
Bush did some things i did not like.

Lack of action on illegals, medicare-D & the money wasted on schools.
Other than that, he done a good job.

And the brutal attacks by by the Liberal Media & Socialists in congress makes my blood boil.
And these culprits must never ever be forgiven.

Matt: Thank you for sharing this...

There are still a few things that I'm not happy with Pres. Bush for; the Amnesty Bill, Compean and Ramos still in prison, and the millions of dollars doled out to the families of the 9-11 victims.

But, I do believe that he will, sooner than most predicted, be looked upon as an exceptional president in the time.

While I find it unconscionable, I was not at all surprised to learn that "he was let down by those he relied upon to provide him with the accurate information needed to properly respond to the catastrophe."

Yet the people who screeched the loudest didn't seem to understand that no president has the "legal authority" to send the Natl. Guard into any state (for any reason) UNTIL such time that the governor of that state FORMALLY makes a REQUEST, and Pres. Bush called the then gov. of LA, Kathleen Blanco, and BEGGED her to make that formal request so he could send in the Natl Guard and FEMA (as soon as it was feasible) but Blanco WOULD NOT DO IT, until it was too late.

Same thing with Nagin. Pres. Bush did NOT have the "legal authority" to do anything in New Orleans, but he called Mayor Nagin and BEGGED him to get the people OUT OF NEW ORLEANS.

Nagin did NOTHING, and we all know how THAT worked out.

And of course, Pres. Bush, and the CIA, DID in fact KEEP US SAFE, and thwarted 19 terrorist attack attempts since 9-11. And given the the media and democrat beating he took, never wavering, we ALL need to be grateful.

Thank you
Thank you ,President Bush ,for keeping us safe.God bless you.

Thank you
Thank you ,President Bush ,for keeping us safe.God bless you.

Bush
Bush is a good man. Until he surrendered all principle, panicked and gave in with the financial bailout and auto bailout, I had no major beefs with him though I too disliked his extreme spending and compromising.

Thank you President Bush
Dear Mr President,
I believe you will be vindicated and as time passes you'll be thought of as a warrior and leader.
Your wife is an inspiration to young women and your daughters are to be proud of.
My daughter and I always enjoy your Barney and Ms Beasley and socks videos too..She's since earned 5 Junior Ranger badges at various Historical Parks.
Bless you both for your service to this great country
Keep safe
Edna

Matt
Great column but I knew all that you wrote about, including the reading of editorials. There is a common theme running through this country, and it is busy hitting both sides as we become more and more reactive and less proactive.

THOSE BUSY SCREAMING HATE ARE UNABLE TO HEAR TRUTH

I also have to wonder what would have happened if Saddam did have the amount of WMD's as purported. I say 'amount' because he did have some, but not in the expected quantity. However the quantity he did have does go to intent. But I digress. What if he did have the amount purported and Bush did nothing?

I think Bush erred on the side of better safe than sorry, and I would have as well. If you aren't going to trust your intel then quit spending money on these intelligence branches and do away with it completely.

Thank you.
Thank you, President Bush. It has been a blessing having you as President for the last 8 years.

I will miss you. I believe many others will miss him also as we get into the Obama administration.

God Bless You, President Bush.

Anne
The broader lesson that is not being learned from Katrina is self reliance. People treat 'the government' as if it is an individual person that should just be able to reach out a hand and pluck someone out of a river or storm.

I am convinced
that there aren't many myths about Bush. I think that what is out there is a lot of hate spewed by the left, who hate him beyond all reason and accountability. I call them Bushophobes.

Aww...Towery Got a Letter
So you got a letter, goody for you Matt! Why don't you show it to one of the people who's been recently laid off? To someone that lost their shirt in the stock market? To the family of a soldier who died for WMD's that were never found? To those of us left with the bill from his stupid spending spree?

To the "Bush kept us safe" crowd...is that now the whole standard to which you hold a president? What about the victims of drunk driving illegal immigrants or the victims of other crimes? Victims of such incidents outnumber the total of troops killed in Iraq.

It's sad how you are willing to excuse his mistakes as being let down by those he relied on. A president has to be responsible for those he puts on staff. It was his choice to hire cronies like Brownie and no one's fault but his own when Katrina was botched.

The only people who really have much to thank Bush for are liberal Democrats because he's taken what was a conservative tide post Clinton and turned it into a Dem majority that was inconceivable a few years ago.

Questions--
Why after 9-11 didn't peso george secure our nation's borders and ports, identify and deport all illegal aliens, arrest the enablers of these illegals, have all visas that had expired identified and then deport those who overstayed, make it a crime to allow sactuary cities to exist. This would have been an excellent executive order package, but no, now we have identity thefts, murders, drug smugglers, two fine border agents in jail, 12-20 million illegals in this country costing our taxpayers billions of dollars, bilingual education, hospitals going broke, taxes rising and you conservatives know the rest.
Also to add, our excellent military has kept us safe. This is why We voted for Hunter and Tancredo who were seen by the left as racists.
Now we have the @#$&%$ messiah and probably more open borders. Bye bye peso george.

Hndwrtten Bush Ltr Disproves One Myth...

that he couldn't write?

william-CA: Are you 6 or 7yrs. old?

OR, are you just stuck on insufferably stupid, or am I giving you too much of the benefit of the doubt?

You are right
I expect that Bush will end up being viewed by history as a pretty good President, exceptional in terms of national defense, less so but not all bad in domestic matters.

I'm not sure anybody let anybody down on the pre-war Iraq intelligence. Really, the main reason offered for the war, and a very good reason is that Sadaam, having been crushed but granted mercy in the first Persian Gulf action, refused, despite way too many opportunities, to live up to the promises he made in exchange for the cease-fire. Moreover, intelligence is never perfect and one has to make the best judgments and decisions one can, taking into account the risks of being wrong either way. I think the intelligence agencies and Bush both did the best they could under the circumstances. Additionally, we still cannot say with confidence the pre-war intelligence was wrong, but we know for sure Sadaam at least had things in place to have biological and chemical weapons production up and running within a few weeks and to continue his quest for nuclear arms as soon as the heat was off, so whatever errors, if any, existed in the intelligence were of no practical importance.

The negative side of Bush's legacy will be his enthusiastic cooperation with liberal Democrats in pushing this country further in the direction of central-government directed socialism--No Child Left Behind; Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage; government ownership in insurance companies, banks and brokerage houses; etc. But none of these things came as surprises to anyone who had watched and listened to the things Mr. Bush did and said prior to being elected President. He is not a doctrinaire conservative, which I lament, but he has been utterly true to his convictions, many of the more important of which are spot on.

Pres. Bush
As a Texan who observed Bush while he was governor, I am not surprised at the President he turned out to be. He was pretty much a moderate Democrat while he was governor.

What did surprise me was the level of sheer hatred rained down upon him by the nationl Democrats. Democrats in Texas loved Bush, for the most part. In fact, Bob Bullock, the most powerful Democrat in Texas, endorsed Bush for a second term as governor.

Bush would have bankrupted Texas with his spending if it had not been for the Texas constitution, which requires a balanced budget.

And there are plenty of other issues on which I differ from the President...immigration, the way the war was handled, the bailout, the growth of government, etc.

But he was still head and shoulders above both guys he defeated. Which, in a way, is very sad.

Bush Legacy
I just wish that President Bush had taken his critics to task when they were demonstratably and obviously wrong. To allow the hateful lies and mistruths to go unanswered did no one a favor. I believe that had he given TV addresses he would have been a much more effective leader. He should have followed Ronald Reagan's advice when polls were against him...educate the people to the facts and do not let the opinions of the liberal media stand unopposed. There were aspects of his administration that went against conservative principals and I am glad the amnesty deal failed but overall he was an okay president. Good Luck in retirement...or run for the Senate, it has been done before!

It bears repeating here more than...
anywhere...

History will show that although it took eight years, the singular, sinister, spectacular and precise attack launched by Osama Bin Laden against the United States of America on September 11th, 2001 finally brought the greatest power on the planet to its knees.

The attack itself lasted just moments -- carried out in broad daylight by 19 men flying four commercial airliners into three buildings and a farm. As a result, two buildings collapsed, one was damaged and 3000 Americans died.

Osama Bin Laden, knowing he could never defeat his hated enemy militarily, instead conceived a plan so brilliant in its efficiency that, in the annals of modern folklore, only the little missile flying down the chute of the Death Star in Star Wars rivaled its astounding effectiveness.

His strategy was simple. Know the weakness of your enemy, strike but once – then sit back and wait as your enemy destroys itself.

It worked because his enemy was America lead by President George W. Bush.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the knee-jerk reactions and panicked "Fight Everyone" decisions the Terrorist seduced out of our President turned an attack that tactically amounted to nothing but a paper-cut on the finger of a giant into a killing infection that has now rendered America helpless, confused and dying.

Yes, we have no choice but to admit, Osama Bin Laden played George Bush like a fiddle.

George Bush and his cadre of criminals called Rove, Rumsfeld, Cheney and Wolfowitz belong in prison for treason. Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and just about any other war-mongering Bush-loving Dupe that propagated his administration and its doomed policies belong in the cell right next to them.

Good and bad
I wouldn't cut him much slack on the financial situation. It wasn't entirely of his making, but that it was coming was obvious.

On security, you have to admit that we've been terrorist attack free for 7 years. Historians will decide whether his policies helped more than hurt in this area. I think we owe it to him to give him the benefit of the doubt on keeping us safe though. I'm worried Obama is making choices that may not keep us as secure.

I still wish we'd had somebody else these last 8 years though, glad to see him move on.

Bush
I don't have a problem with decent thought-out critiques of Bush, by the left, but those were hard to find. Throughout his presidency, what I read and heard in the so-called mainstream media was the most vile and vicious attacks. The level of disrespect shown to President Bush was astounding. As a conservative, I thought President Bush was somebody that ought appeal to moderates and sometimes even liberals, but they were led by their controllers in the media down the road of hate, and their hate started shortly after 9/11. It has been a pretty disgusting 7 years since that time, as we've seen disrespect towards the sitting president that is at a level I've never seen before. Obama will not receive that level of disrespect because Republicans are much more classy than the crass lib-tards that make up the modern Left. We'll see years of Obama being treated as messiah, by the media..it's only beginning folks.

George W.Bush
The man liberals love to hate.

The left hates Bush simply because he is a Republican. Nothing he could have done would have made a difference. The fact that he won two elections against them angered them even more. They have never forgiven him for that.

It is not the war,Katrina,or any number of things they rail against that brings out the fangs. It is his party affiliation.

The left in this country and around the world are glad to see him go. He was the same holding a cross in the face of a vampire. He was a good Christian man,not perfect, but forgiven by our God. That frosts the left.

One other thing. The left has one important task . To kill any opposition to their socialist/Marxist plan. So the Republican Party must go. The MSM and the Entertainment Industry are aiding and abetting them in their endeavors. They are all despicable.

Waterboard a liberal.

poor choices
Bush made some bad judgment calls regarding the people he placed around him:
Rumsfeld was soooo 80's;
Condi Rice: affirmative action gone awry; Cheney: obnoxious and did he DO anything except, probably, give bad advice about the early stages of the war? Although his crack to Leahy from Vermont was awesome!
Bush clearly trusts everyone and anyone and allowed some treacherous creeps into his circle: Scott McClellan (sp) and David Kuo (sp) were two guys who were so wishy-washy and spineless they couldn't decide what they did or did not believe in until they were gone and decided to write a couple of idiotic books that only made themselves look bad.
And Colin Powell? Good Lord. A pompous bu** who has always taken himself far too seriously.
Bush's main legacy will be that he kept us safe for 7 years.

thanks
Just one word "thanks", and may those that tend to spend so much time expending hateful rhetoric and unkind words never be placed in a position to be judged by their peers; because they will fall woefully short and wonder why.

President "Mis-underestimated"
If my ears did not deceive me the President used the word "Mis-underestimated" in his final press conference. I personally don't think Bush is an evil man, but he certainly is not eloquent. He simply did not (and still does not) have the communication skills I believe that are needed to be an effective President. The level of incompetence of his administration will not be fully appreciated for decades. What part for example did Secretary Cox and his predecessor at the SEC play in the financial meltdown? It is clear that that SEC waivers in 2004 and 2005 that increased the liquidity ratio for investment banks from 12 to all the way up to 40 to 1, played a major role in the collapse of some of the largest banks in this country. This was under the Bush watch. Also there was the failure to reign in the exponential increase in credit default swaps (first created in 1999 under Clinton but approved by a Republican controlled congress). It is reported that these toxic derivatives (which brought down AIG and others) have a "paper" value of over 500 trillion dollars. The entire mortgage assets of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are around 5 trillion dollars. Bush and his advisers could have (should have) seen this coming and done something about it but he/they didn't. Then we have the issues of treatment of prisoners: water boarding, stress positions, rendition, Abu Grhaib, etc. Historians I believe will not be kind to Bush on the torture issue. Yes he may have kept America "safe" from attack but his actions (and in some case lack thereof) have seriously hurt this country.

Paper cut???
To William of CA who said:
In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the knee-jerk reactions and panicked "Fight Everyone" decisions the Terrorist seduced out of our President turned an attack that tactically amounted to nothing but a paper-cut on the finger of a giant into a killing infection that has now rendered America helpless, confused and dying.

You tell those people who lost loved ones in those crashes that it was a mere paper cut! Better yet, you be the one to offer yourself up for the next paper cut.

Pres. Bush did not do everything right in his administration and no president ever will because they are humans who have to rely on other humans to make the decisions. But he has kept us attack free for seven years. Beat that.

Rowly
Why waterboard liberals? Do they possess any information that we really need?

Paleocon
No,just punishment for being.....

Godspeed
Thank you George Bush. I've had my disagreements, but on the whole, good job.

You mean the "Harpies" Hunter?
Because I believe that was Ann Coulter's word for the people who lost loved ones on 9/11. And whereas my "paper cut" analogy is actually entirely appropriate in the context in which it was used(actual physical damage to national assets and national security resulting from 9/11 relative to overall national strength) your "hero" Ms. Coulter went out of her way to attack on a personal and individual level specific people whose loved ones died on that fateful day.

I used my language to make a point. She used her language to make a buck. And probably some of yours.

"History will show that although it took eight years, the singular, sinister, spectacular and precise attack launched by Osama Bin Laden against the United States of America on September 11th, 2001 finally brought the greatest power on the planet to its knees."

To its knees? Really. I don't think so. If history shows that, it will be because it was written that way by America-hating academics with an agenda to instill in young minds. We were shocked as a nation, yes, but not even close to being brought to our knees, as you say--- more like punched in the nose and standing firmly. The problem may be that we didn't fight back like we should have at the moment the last glowing ember from the Twin Towers died out.

On that day, we could have witnessed a complete global economic collapse. We could have had lawlessness, rioting, panic, and mass suicides. We could have tucked our tails between our collective legs and tried to negotiate a truce or surrender to the cowards who thought that murdering innocent Americans would in some way cause the nation's resolve to disintegrate. We were nowhere NEAR being on our knees, William. And when the going gets tough enough that it ever looks like we WILL be, I guarantee you that America will show that it is a force with which to be reckoned. The impetus to display our true patriotism and strength may not come from our men and women in Washington, but it WILL come from the American people. God bless our great nation.

President Bush
Thank you.

K-9, it appears we violently agree
If you re-read my post you will clearly see I did not state we were brought to our knees on 9/11. Far from it - for virtually every reason (and more) you state.

I said that after the attack it took the full eight years of Bush's poor judgement and myopic leadership to turn that one-day strike into something far more damaging.

You underscore my point -- we were a country of far more exceeding and extraordinary power on 9/12/2001 than we are today after the full run of George Bush's "Reign of Error"

K-9: You DO realize that william-CA is

certifiable, don't you?

He's YET to post a cognitive, logical, or truthful comment.

Bush can write
who knew?

7 days

Geez Anne, at least...
give me "cognitive". I have to work hard here!

Pres. Jorge focused on wrong bad guys

I voted 2x for W, but I am sick about it (though Windsurfer and public traitor Cohen-Kerry was NOT an alternative). The war in Iraq was a profligate war of choice against the wrong Arabs; Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11, WMD's were irrelevant to the U.S. anyway, and Saddam and Osama were opponents.

We will have spent $3 TRILLION all-in, with thousands killed and maimed-- all because the neoCONS then manipulating the Bush W.H. (Perle, Wolfy, Feith, Libby, and Wurmser... and their fellow pan-Israeli allies braying incessantly in the media--> Krauthammer, May, Kristol, Kagan, Prager, Gaffney, Barone, Medved, Prelutsky) wanted permanent American bases in Iraq for Israel's protection-- the dirty little secret.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_c ontributors/article3419840.ece
http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/spheresInfluence.h tml

Meanwhile, near-clueless Presidente Jorge believed in open borders, so he failed to uphold his most fundamental oath-- to defend and protect our border. Like Amnesty John McCain, he had made a Faustian deal years ago for employer lobby $ and Hispanic votes, but both quislings failed to get the latter, even as they sold out America to the indigent, ignorant ILLEGAL alien invasion... which will likely leave a legacy of an America morphing into a third world welfare state as ILLEGALS are enfranchised and vote it in.

Finally, as the column notes, RINO Jorge spent $ and grew govt. like a born-again 'Crat in order to buy loyalty for funding his misbegotten war-- swell job there, Jorge Bush!

William
Gotcha. I understand the context now. We're still not at our knees, though, even eight years later. I think GW Bush is a decent guy, but I can't say he wasn't complicit in the downturn we have taken. But I lay the bulk of the blame on Congress. If it is true that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, we have a heckuva weak chain pulling the country along right now (and it doesn't look like it will get stronger anytime soon). I have faith in the American people... it's waning a bit, after watching what we went through in the last election, but I still believe we are the greatest, most powerful nation in the world. That's not a statement born of narcissism or elitism, but the truth. America is not completely lost. We're just in a rut at the moment. It's a dangerous place to be, though, as we could either begin to redouble our strength and will, or watch the bottom fall out completely. The next eight years could be a great indicator of which way we'll swing. But then again, all of the woes of the Carter era are just now showing their true impact... maybe it will be another 30 years before the impact of today is truly revealed.

Bush probably IS
a decent "regular" guy. As much as I detested his administration as President I actually did think he was probably a guy you could have a beer and a few laughs with down at the local Suds.

Uhh, that makes him just like me -- and I sure don't think I should be President either.

Agreed we are down but not out K-9. Next 2, 4 6 and 8 years... VITAL.

Stay tuned.

my 2 cents
According to the a.p. on July 5, 2008 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium were delivered to Canada for their nuclear energy program.

Where did this come from?

It came from Iraq, where allied forces found it in 2003 and kept it under wraps for 5 years until arrangements could be made.

Why did they keep it under wraps instead of publicizing it and showing the rest of the world what liars the "Bush lied thousands died" were?

To keep it secret from terrorists who would try to steal it.

Country first - what a concept

WILLIAM IN CA
Hey get back man the chicks i.e., Ms. Annie is running cicles around you. So much proof you have refused to acknowledge just like the "deregulation of Freddie and Fannie" are on the head of the FAT FRANK who after getting informed that the democratic assistance to people who couldn't afford to buy houses where dragging the monetary system down, who after knowing that the ACORN thugs were out in full force with the support of your dear mister future to be president...omama and his community organizer thugs coerced banks to lend to those who couldn't afford it. in 2002 President Bush and even Mr.McCain called for the investigation of both these financial institutions and their voices where silenced...BY THE DEMOCRATs. why not if Mr. DoDD amongst others were getting preferential rates for mortgages and 75,000.- sweetheart deals. Mr. Bush is a Commander in Chief the U.S. Forces is proud of, as such he is called CINC and Gentleman.
Mrs. MAJ Ramsey

Pres. Bush
Will go down in history as a great pres. I know the left hates him, but the left is always wrong about history. Maybe because they know so little of it.
Kirk

To all the libs here today
You are right Pres. Bush did not do enough, you people are still alowed to wright seditus and tratorus posts and collums. The nyt giving our secrets away, and the change america crowd calling murders heros, and heros murders. Yes we should have just stayed home and done nothing. Hell the FBI was so good at stoping atacks, just ask the clintons and comp. they can tell us all about it. I don't give a dame about what the world thinks of us,I want them to fear us. The Pres. has keep us safe. We could have won faster if we had gone to war like we did in WW II, but you libs would have waled and cried as well. You now have your chance to prove us wrong with the one. You just beter hope that anothe atack does not happen on his watch. Maybe a gitmo guy?
Kirk

Well Said!
President Bush delivered as promised. We are safer because of him. Thank you!

The buck stops here
"...a president delegates duties to those he trusts. If they choose to operate in a secretive and ineffective manner, then it is they who have failed, and not the president."

Clue to reality:
The buck does stop at the President's desk. If he has a delegate that is ineffective, it is his obligation to right the course.

Watch out for the MSM
For those who read blob from both the left and the right MSM, they know that the MSM are not interested in truth and the value of the United States as a world leader with a benevolent hand to those in need in the world. We do know that the MSM, by it's continuous vitriol has ruined many a fine person whom they can destroy through inuendos and jointly working on the plan to do just that; destroy them whom they disagree with. We had better wake up if we are to get good people to replace the dunderheads in Washington. I do not believe that the MSM will destroy everyone; some of whom will save us from the pitiful Washington Crowd.

Bush Gave Us Obama and Madoff!!
William offers, "we were a country of far more exceeding and extraordinary power on 9/12/2001 than we are today after the full run of George Bush's "Reign of Error""

You have a point, after all, the great demagogues, Obama and Madoff, did come to pass under Bush's watch.

Butchers Make Good Presidents
A great president has to be an S.O.B. Unfortunately, Mr. Bush was a pretty good guy, someone you'd enjoy having a beer with but not a good executive. He relied on too many "good 'ol boys" from Texas who let him down.

President Eisenhower with his military background was a good executive because he did not tolerate people who screwed up. Unfortunately, his VP, Richard Nixon, did not learn the right lessons: You have to be a butcher in order to be a competent, successful president.

Supposedly, PEO is very cold man and we have seen him throw people under the bus during his campaign. Here's a bulletin for him: Be prepared to throw a lot of people under the bus, including especially Hillary Clinton, or go down in history as a failed president.

insolent snakes in the grass

We never elected any Jorge. We have George W. Bush, American president by the will of the people and the grace of God. He served his two terms honorably as he swore to do when inaugurated. "JORGE" isn't anybody we elected.

Nor has Jorge ever pitched a perfect strike to home plate opening the baseball season; as W did with flair. He personally retraced his steps to where his secret service escort had been detained by thugs in Chile; took him swiftly out of their grasp and back into the conference area, never opening his mouth. That is George W. Bush. A real man.

He never governed by powers of hindsight, which all his detractors failed to notice. Even in the raw years of his administration, as punditry and Pretend News Media gleefully expected the Iraq war to result in disaster, he didn't quit serving us faithfully.

His work wasn't flawless, but then he never craved applause. Even seeing a number of his own crew desert and betray him, Bush remained true to himself; he never squawked. And he never will.

They say Bush intends to write a book now. At long last, hindsight will serve George W. Bush. He served his country well; He gave us the best he could offer by way of presidential foresight. Those who hated him always worked by hindsight, and out of spite and ignorance. Once more, he'll be charitable toward them, being a true Christian.

God bless and keep the incomparable George W. Bush. He wasn't fooling when he told us Christ was his Lord. We know it because in his daily living he tries to emulate Jesus. What more could Americans have asked of a president?

Lobama's Brave New World
Sun-Times: Journalists Being Shut Out by Obama
By Warner Todd Huston (Bio | Archive)
January 12, 2009 - 21:43 ET

According to Sun-Times columnist and long-time Chicago journalist, Carol Marin, journalists at Barack Obama news conferences have come to realize that Obama has pre-picked those journalists whom he will allow to ask him questions at the conference and many of them now "don't even bother raising" their hands to be called upon.

One wonders why journalists are allowing this corralling of the press? Would they have allowed George W. Bush to pre-pick journalists like that? Would they meekly sit by and allow themselves to be systematically ignored, their freedom to ask questions silenced by any Republican? Would journalists so eagerly vie with one another for the favor of Bush like they are Obama's?

You aren't being very cautious.

"I used my language to make a point. She used her language to make a buck. And probably some of yours." In fact, you used language to tell lies, not make points. Ann Coulter did not refer to as "harpies" those who lost loved ones on 9-11. Tell the truth;

Harpies was used against a group of malevolent women who called themselves the Jersey Girls, or something of the like. Not those you're now trying to call all who lost their loved ones. These Jersey broads were in truth little more than strident harpies. Ann put them squarely in their place.

Is she always right in her caustic analysis of liberals? Maybe not. But she tells honestly what's on her mind. You fail here in the honesty department.

Reading
Of course Bush reads. So does Sarah Palin, and Katie Couric's question to Palin about her reading was a stupid question, undeserving of an answer. To name one, a few, anything that she reads would have been a worst possible answer for Palin or any other public figure, only leaving room for a whirlwind of further savaging of Palin.
I would have asked Couric if she - Couric - reads, is literate in any language, but Palin is nicer than I am though and way more political.
Something everyone should read is T.R. Roosevelt's comments on The Man In The Arena as part of a speech he gave at the Sorbonne in Paris. You can Google it by that name in quote marks to read it.
Every leader has successes and failures, makes mistakes and achieves good things. Only those who have never led or ever will don't know those truths.

Thanks for the memories
The Honorable George W. Bush, My President for the last 8 years, kept my Country safe from terrorism after the 9/11 tragedy and was wise enough to bring freedom to over 25 million people. I hope it isn't just a memory after the next one gains office.

I also believe we have just experienced the best and now we are in for the worse Federal government has to offer.

I also believe President Bush will go down in history as a truly great President in the company of Reagan and Washington.

Once we are under the new administration and they really get a glance at who they elected, liberals may step away from the BDS disorder. Although, that may not be possible for the dimmer bulb lefties.

AT LONG LAST.
......FINALLY!.....

The Dreadnought sinks
"Harpies" was indeed the descriptive term used by Coulter to describe some of the widows of those who lost there lives on 9/11.

She also claimed they were "self-obsessed" and then actually had the temerity to write "...how do we know their husband's weren't planning to divorce them anyway..."

Since THIS is the woman you defend you are as reprehensible as she. I stand by my language.

"You have a point, after all, the great demagogues, Obama and Madoff, did come to pass under Bush's watch."

Madoff was a failure of the SEC to follow-up on reports in the late 1990's. As for being a demagogue, that's pushing it a bit. Smooth talker, yes.

As for Obama, I was unaware President Bush was in charge of the Illinois Democrat Party in the 1990's. And just how did this empty suit ever get consideration as a real candidate of a major party?

GWB
Much like his father was no conservative. I have my problems with his tenure as well. Bailout, big mistake, et al.

However, good column and the points are valid. Definitely not the best in history, definitely not the worst but, he will be missed in many respects.

God Bless Mr. President, wish you many peaceful and productive years in Texas.

The Bush Legacy
Dennis Miller was on the O'Reilly show tonight. Dennis was once a liberal and still is on some level, but he gave a great statement about the president. Everyone should watch the replay later tonight.

GWB
After 9/11, when President Bush made his impromptu speech at the W.T.C., I saw a courageous and unifying man. That fact prompted me to learn more about him. I learned of his personal battles and, most importantly, his faith in God. Being a somewhat new Christian and battling my own personal demons, I was moved and encouraged by his success and strength. While I have not agreed with every decision he's made(Do we ever with anyone?), I respect him for remaining principled and often, much to the dismay of his party and many of his supporters, turning the other cheek. Thank you, Mister President, for your hard work for, and love of, this great nation. Time will show that you were a great POTUS. I already know that you're a great man.
May our God continue to bless you, Laura, and your family.

So you stand by the dishonest appraisal of Ann Coulter? That's typical of hard-line Democrats & other pettifoggers. Her harpies remarks were about the "Jersey Girls," a vacuous batch of dissidents who indeed were guilty of exploiting a loss in their families for political gain. You won't face it, but that's what Cool Ann wrote. Now you think you can twist her words to mean ALL were harpies who lost loved ones on 9-11. (What losers liberals are!)

Is it necessarily true that liberals must lie at every opportunity? Let's not judge by your glaring examples. After all; you write from the bluest state. It's a given you bleed blue when scratched.

I myself live in CA; but never got indoctrinated in the university twink-tanks around here. Thank
God for that; and also for Ann Coulter's books.
