Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

With so many newspapers columns about bailouts and debt, I thought I might just change the pace by paying tribute to a woman to whom we as Americans are indebted -- First Lady Laura Bush.

I know President Bush doesn't read columns, but with all due respect, he needs to read this one. So, I'm writing it to him.

Dear Mr. President,

This message has nothing to do with you or your presidency. I'll leave that to others. But, then again, it has everything to do with you and your presidency.

Being an ex-elected official and candidate for statewide office -- now permanently "reformed" by not participating anymore -- I know what the wives of political leaders go through. Not that I can ever know how tough it gets when one reaches the level of the presidency. But I can imagine.

For this and other reasons, I want to thank you personally and on behalf of a great number of Americans for the service your wife, Laura, has given to America.

Like plenty of us political men, you married "over your head," which I'm sure you know. Many of us are lucky to have bright, devoted and strong wives who not only help hold our families together during our years in political office, but who could themselves tackle many of the issues we do, often with superior skill to our own.

In the case of your own Laura, she helped raise two bright and beautiful young women. Sure they had a few teenage incidents. Whose kids don't? But they have brought honor to your family and have been a great reflection on their parents.

Then there is the side of your wife for which we as a nation owe a huge debt.

I know that most Americans know that Mrs. Bush was a librarian when you met her. But I'm not sure everyone knows that she earned not only her bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University but also a master's degree from the University of Texas. This woman is no wallflower.

And, as you know Mr. President, she has in her always friendly, warm and articulate manner, put her keen mind to work for America.

While she has been best known for her tireless efforts to promote global literacy, Laura Bush has been just as active on a range of issues -- from her "Women's Health and Wellness Initiative," to her fight to end oppression against women in nations such as Afghanistan, where she actually took the place of her husband in presenting the weekly presidential radio address in 2001.

But you know all of that, Mr. President.

But I want others to recognize how active she has been on behalf of people who need help and often can't fight for themselves. And we all recognize that while this is a kind and caring woman, she can be passionate and, in her own way, fight effectively for others. In fact, she is still fighting for the women of Afghanistan.

I can only imagine how proud you were of her performance on "Meet the Press" recently, where she deftly handled a range of issues in a way that seemed to me to be as competent and articulate as say, Sen. Hillary Clinton or Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In fact, I was blown away by her ability to take anything Tom Brokaw asked of her and ace it.

What makes this all the more interesting is to see her just a week or so later, live in the White House showing the Christmas decorations to a national audience. I loved the part when the dog ran right past her, and she cracked a joke and never missed a beat.

So whether it's the Christmas tree or denouncing the disfigurement of young girls in a nation so very far away, Laura Bush is able to handle the task with grace and ease.

I guess it is a bit presumptuous to write a sitting president in a national column. But we all know this will never reach George W. Bush. But it just would not be fair, particularly given the tough years this nation and her husband have endured, not to at least recognize one of the greatest first ladies in American history.

Example
I can't really think of a time when the press was critical of Laura Bush at all. In fact, I can't remember the last time I read a news story about her, positive or negative.

Hats off to a real lady
Laura Bush has been and is a real class act; dignified, intelligent, and graceful under the fire she and her husband have been through.

It must have been very painful to see her husband be so maligned, hated, and lied about by the press and the left and to know how seriously he took his job of keeping the nation safe after 9/11.

Through it all she has been an inspirational example to all women and she deserves credit for showing such character in her personal and public life.

A National Treasure
Laura Bush is a National Treasure. She has always presented the strength and grace that makes all American's proud she's the First Lady. We will miss her bright intelligence and quick wit and she certainly did hold her own in all interviews - even when the liberal press would try those inevitable rude trick questions.

Laura Bush
AMEN!

Whut ?

Geeze!

Do I see an empty field here?

The lefties are way down. Did 'Georg Soros' pull all his funding?

What is wrong with this picture?

Only 3 'wobbie' posts?

What is happening?

Oh. Shoot! I forgot. 'Georg Soros' succeded in causing the economic meltdown, as he edid in two other countrys and no longer needs the "Useful Idiots".

Such a classy woman.
Such a great piece for such a deserving woman. And I also like her husband. So much was thrown at both of them. She is remarkable and such a blessing to our nation. We will miss having them both in the White House.

Laura Bush
A fine piece written about a fine woman. Michelle has a tough act to follow.

Laura was no Hillary

Over the 8 years Bill Clinton was Prez. Hillary manage to run up a 900 million dollar travel bill running around the globe on vacation with Chelsea.

A lot of kids could have had healthcare with that 900 million. A lot of kids could have went to college with some of that 900 million.

As usual Liberals like Hillary hurt people.

Awesome Article!
Thank you for writing this piece. Laura Bush is exemplery of the caliber of womanhood, with stature and grace. I'm sure she was a strong force in helping her husband keep his sanity.

George has his faults, but we all do. I believe he sincerely loves this country and did all he could to protect it. When you consider the wars, the hurricanes, the floods, the oil issue, and everything else that occurred during his administration, Laura gave him comfort, peace of mind, inspiration and assurances that were probably invaluable to him.

Hats off to a lovely lady.

Thank you Laura
I want to add my thanks to Laura Bush for her years of service. It must have been very trying and very stressful to be the wife of President Bush and see him attacked unfairly on a constantly. She had to worry about his safety on a daily basis, but through it all she did her job and pursued her goals. She saw how she could benefit the world and she went to work. She has been amazing and an inspiration. Thank you Laura Bush. I'm sure she will enjoy leaving the White House and getting her life back. I'm sure she will continue her good works wherever she is.

oops
I meant to say: It must have been very trying and very stressful to be the wife of President Bush and see him attached unfairly on a constant basis.

Go Laura and Vito - don't be such a big dunce!

Thank You Mrs. Bush
For showing grace under pressure, dignity in the face of rabid insanity and what a real decent (and honest) public political marriage can be.

You have been a wonderful and inspirational First Lady. America will miss you. And we Thank You for your service to the Country.

Mrs. Bush
I have heard people mock Mrs. Bush because she's "staid," conservative, "unglamorous." Many people I know consider her to be quite beautiful, btw, & love that she's steadfast & positive in outlook.
I'll bet the same people who mock Mrs. Bush also mock Sarah Palin because she, too is conservative, like Mrs. Bush; but mock Palin also BECAUSE she's glamorous! And these are the folks who call Gov. Palin names, throw ad hominem attacks. I've actually heard someone in a respected professional field call Gov. Palin a redneck, unsophisticated & a media whore!
I do not know where these fools get these ideas. Perhaps, though well-educated in their field, they are really uneducated generally, & not clear thinkers. These are the folks who get their news from comedy & satirical TV shows, like Jon Stewart. Pathetic.

Thank you Matt and Mrs Bush
Too often this gracious lady has been ignored by the American People and not given credit.
The first lady is just that, a lady.

Her steadfast resolve has gone largely underground yet it's quiet presence is bettering the lives of millions.

Thank you Matt for bringing this to light and thank you First Lady Laura for being a beacon of light to goodness and graciousness to all the women and young girls you have influenced.

Thank you, Mrs. Bush!
Laura Bush is a classy lady. She has grace and intelligence, a combination about which many women nowadays have no clue. She hasn't pushed her own political agenda, but has quietly stayed the course alongside her husband as his help-mate. She hasn't tried to "out-do" him, like other president's wives. Instead, she has quietly promoted those campaigns which are dear to her heart: reading for children and others, and helping the oppressed in both the USA and other countries. She has been a wonderful example for young and older women, as well as young and older men! Laura Bush is a true blessing to this country. Thank you, Mrs. Bush, for your grace, mercy, peace, your strong character, kindness, and for being the womanly example God created you to be! May our Heavenly Father bless you with His most precioius spiritual riches!!!

Laura Bush: A shining example...
of all that is genteel and desirable in a woman who has stood by her man through all the unwarranted rabid attacks by the haters of this world.
Those who would attack her for any dreamt-up excuse are sorry human beings indeed. She cannot be compared to other wives who have "stood by her man" such as the likes of the political whore, Hillary Clinton.
We can only hope that Laura Bush will succeed in inspiring other women to emulate her example; you can see the light of God's goodness shining through her persona.

It was refreshing to have a first lady
who did not think she was elected along with her husband as a co-president.

Laura Bush was a lovely first lady -- I worry that our next first lady will be of the co-president variety.

Lovely Laura
All you have said is true and there has never been a shred of scandal or rudeness in her. She is a shining star in the political world. Maybe she should run for office. We need to follow her example. Jean

Thank you
Mr. Towery for writing a column that really needed to be said and you did it brilliantly! Laura Bush indeed has been a role model for all women. We are proud to be able to shout her praises knowing that she was and is a great First Lady [as was her Mother-in-law!]

Laura Bush
A beautiful, classy first lady. She has honored America by her presence in the White House. She has accomplished much in her quiet way. No matter what feelings there are about George Bush, this lady deserves honor and respect. I think we will all miss her, regardless of our party affiliations. God Bless Her.

Lulu-Rat
In future references to First Ladies, Laura Bush will be known as “A Rose between 2 Thorns”.

Mrs. Welch Did Good...
You have to give credit where credit is due...Laura is the product of good up-bringing and her mom should be proud. Not only did she raise a woman who could manage all the things mentioned in earlier posts, she rasied a woman who took a rowdy young fellow and helped shape him into a man capable of leading this country during the worst of times...and despite how the liberal press has tried to paint GW's presidency, he was successful. Yep...between Laura and Barbara, they could have made any man seem super-human...

comment to Vito
First of all- speaking of literacy, you may want to double check your own before knocking down someone else's- even in a simple email you couldn't pull it off. Sounds bitter to me and that never looks good on anyone. Perhaps having someone like this woman as a mentor or role model growing up could have somehow impacted your life differently and decently and allowed you to see the good in people even if you disagree with them on issues. This hateful verbage just lends more to your lack of credibility. Something to think about. Laura Bush has been an outstanding woman. Perfect? no, but real. Quite frankly, we don't have enough of that in the world.

I am not sure ...
Laura Bush is a gracious lady, but I suspect that she is behind the odorous "No Child Left Behind" nonsense. A pox on that law.

First Lady
I have always admired Laura Bush. She is classy, smart and beautiful. Laura knew her job as First Lady and she performed with excellence. Laura Bush is the gold standard of First Ladies. Michelle Obama, on the other hand, is not in the same league as Laura Bush and never will be. Michelle is more like Hillary Clinton even though she likes to portray herself as a Jackie O type. She will be meddeling in the presidency and attempting to shape policies just like Hillary. There won't be another Laura Bush in the White House for a long, long time.

First Lady
Thanks for such a thoughtful and well-written piece on Mrs. Bush. She is truly a First Lady we can all be proud of.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
Thanks for the article. Laura Bush has remained gracious even in the face of the trashing this country has given President Bush. We owe both President and Mrs. Bush our thanks, respect, and appreciation

AMERICA'S FIRST LADY
Thank you Matt for this article, I could not agree more. I love & respect Laura Bush & President George W Bush. I am so glad God blessed our President and America with this beautiful woman to be his help-mate especially this last eight years. Lest we forget, they have proudly carried the responsibility of America's security and welfare of the American people. No doubt having her by his side has helped to keep him focused on what is most important, America.
People can always find fault but I see a couple whose faith in God has kept them strong during all the storms. Thank you Laura for being our First Lady. You are what America is all about:beautiful, warm, gracious, reaching out to those in need with caring and respect. Intelligent, diligent,
humorous and loving. No wonder your husband is such a wonderful president, he's got you. Dearest Laura just because you & the President will move out of the White House does not mean you'll move out of the hearts & prayers of those who love & respect & appreciate you. I pray God will bless you both as you continue your journey together. I have no reason to expect to meet or shake your hand in my life time but I believe in God & I believe in Heaven & I have every reason to believe I'll know you there.
Love & God Bless,
Carolyn

LAURA HAS MY VOTE
Mrs. Bush is definitely the best first lady I can remember in my long lifetime. God Bless her and keep them both as they leave the White House and live out their years in happiness together. I'm sure she will still be doing great things.

Laura have also been most active and gracious in her efforts on HIV/AIDS. Mr. Bush was just given an award this week by Pastor Rick Warren for his steadfast dedication for HIV/AIDS in Africa and around the world.

We will miss you Laura. You are the woman all women should look to as an example of grace, loveliness, wisdom and intelligence.

Accolades!!
Matt, thank you for writing such a wonderful article about Mrs. Bush. She truly is a shining example of what a LADY is. She became a breath of fresh air after 8 yrs of the Clintons in OUR HOUSE (they were the company that overstayed their welcome!LOL) She and the President brought dignity back to the White House! It has been great having a normal, All American family in the White House.
I have a very close friend that has had the honor of being in both THEIR company and he has told me manmny times what warm, sincere, funny people they are. I will miss them as I miss my own family.

rdk from AL:

Actually "no child left behind" is a very good law.

Liberals don't like it because it actually holds schools accountable.

Schools are not forced to enter the program, but if they do, they have to be accountable.

Most americans approve of accountibility in education. Only liberals oppose that.

Laura Bush
Thanks for the lovely, very accurate, tribute to Mrs. Bush. Our nation owes her, and President Bush, a debt of gratitude.

Kay Doughty

A toast to you Lady Laura
For being what America is all about. For being the shelter from the storm for President Bush, for showing us there IS grace, true charity and hope walking among us. For being that kinder, gentler, female role model. We thank you.

Class Act!
Laura Bush has been a class act for 8 years in the White House. She truly puts the "lady" in First Lady and we will always be thankful to her for her fine example.

Thank you Laura!

Thank you Mr. Towery
Thank you so very much sir; this woman makes me feel proud of America whenever I see a picture of her or hear her speaking. As a First Lady, we could have no better.

Bill Langston

About time!
Bravo sir! Thank you for saying what we should all have said. She is indeed one of the classiest, intelligent women to ever live in the residence of the White House. I think President Bush knows this. After all, he delivers her coffee in the morning.

Respectfully,

Tony Hubble

Great article!
I, too, have admired Laura Bush throughout the presidency. She was everything a First Lady should be and then some.

I especially admire how she has had to deal with all of the hatred aimed at her husband (and sometimes even her and her daughters). She has dealt with it all with grace and dignity, and she did not allow herself to become bitter and hateful.

We can only hope that Michele Obama can show the same qualities. If she can be as thick-skinned in the face of the severe criticism that will come toward her husband (and it will), she will have earned our respect.

I like her and admire her as a dem
She is truly amazing and did set good example for rest of the first ladies. She is pretty, nice, kind and everything Bush is NOT. why the heck she married W? I wonder!!

Laura Bush
Amen, brother. We can only hope for 'change' that will allow Ms. Obama to mature into being a fraction as admirable.

The Debt We Owe Laura Bush?
You've got to be kidding.

President and Mrs. Bush
Most of these posts have been very uplifting, only a few just couldn't resists showing their hate or maybe just their stupidity.

After enduring 8 years of a couple that should have been ashamed of all their dealings, still to this day act like their life is normal.Mrs. Bush shows what it is like to be a woman, with style and grace.Watching Laura and the President walk hand in hand we knew this was a real marriage, one with love and honor.

I am sure they will miss some of the aspects of the White House, but I am just as sure they will not miss the Media. If anyone had any doubt that the media is beyond honesty, we have seen in the last few years proof.

I have always felt blessed that President Bush was in office on 9-11, but how soon the public forgets. We had been under attack while Clinton was in office, but nothing was done. Thanks to President Bush we have been safe for over 7 years now. I told my kids we need to pray every day about the coming years. The left thinks kind words and backing down is the way to go.

I pray that Obama has more smarts about the danger that is out there than I think he has.

President Bush and Laura, I wish you the very best in your coming retirement. Enjoy your kids and know there are a lot of Americans who do appreciate what you have both did for America.

Right on the money
Great column, Matt. Thank you so much for giving Laura Bush her just due. I have always admired Mrs. Bush not only as a First Lady, but as a model of graceful womanhood -- something very difficult to find in our crass society. What a wonderful example she sets for all women, and what an underappreciated treasure she has been in the White House for the past eight years.

Amount of the debt?
ZERO!

She made us proud
and was a wonderful example to girls everywhere. It was also clear how much equality for women throughout the world meant to her and how little it seemed to mean to many liberals, if those women were from the Middle East. Laura Bush is a smart and honorable woman and the schools got better with her input, too, near and far. Thank you for being our First Lady!

Vito and the Goat
I love how they make liberals look like such knuckle-draggers. They clearly are here to reinforce all stereotypes about liberals. Kudos to you both for doing such a great job of doing nothing to show how "enlightened" liberals are.

I just hope we have another great First Lady in Michele Obama. Hopefully Barak won't have to muzzle her like he did during the campaign. If she turns out to be a great First Lady, I will be one of the first to admit it because I don't have knee-jerk reactions like Vito and the Goat. It is my hope that their little, black hearts grow just like the Grinch's did.

The Debt
Well, Rick...he's right to an extent. The Bushes have certainly left us all with plenty of debt...I don't think anyone even has a good estimate on the total of the bailouts. And why total them? They just keep on coming.

Thank you, Mrs Bush
Thank you and President Bush for your service to our country.

Through eight of the toughest years this country has ever endured, you served with courage, class, and love.

Thank you Bush family.
How can we thank the Bush family for the sacrifices they have made for our country. God be with you all.

I love Lady Laura
Laura Lane Welch Bush: a wonderful, classy woman.
America has surely been blessed to have President and Mrs. Bush be part of our national heritage.

Thank you for your courage and conviction President George W. Bush!

LOVE YA'LL!

THANK YOU LAURA BUSH
Laura Bush has shown courage, humility, integrity, and commitment to all Americans during these past 8 years. She is to be praised and thanked by all Americans. She is a role model to all of us, and I pray that the media, the far left liberals will do just that.
I admired her gallant display of love and admiration at the Republican Convention for her husband and President, George Bush. Americans have treated them (not all Americans whether or not the media and Hollywood believe it) --they have been treated with such hatred and contempt that it is disgraceful to our entire country. Too many Americans are too ignorant to realize that we have experienced two admiral, honest, courageous, Christian couple who will soon be leaving Washington D.C. I AM SO HAPPY FOR THEM AND THAT THEY ARE MOVING TO DALLAS.....GOOD LUCK NEW PRESIDENT OBAMA...MAY GOD ALWAYS BLESS LAURA AND GEORGE BUSH....AND MAY THEY HAVE PEACE IN TX. AS THEY BOTH SURELY DESERVE.

To Vito
Don't be a whiner, weiner! Quit blaming things on everyone else- we don't live in a dictatorship where one man or woman rules the country. You have more freedoms just being in this country even if we are in a lot of debt. Sounds like you are part of the bottom 80% who look for someone else to blame for their unhappiness.Hey, atleast you have a lot of friends with you there on the middle ground.

Surprised and Elated!
I was very happy to read this article. Mrs. Bush is a lady that any mother would want their daughters to emulate. It's more difficult to teach children to be humble and demure than it is to teach them to be proud and loud. She didn't need to show her worth by being the "Co-President" nor did she shame herself, her country or husband by any impassioned, thoughtless remarks.

Mrs. Bush has always been gracious, especially to those who least deserved it. Her intelligence was displayed by her quick and gentle wit, not mean spirited witlessness. She had never insulted the American people with rhetorical hiperbole in defense of her media ambushed husband. She has gone out of her way to give even the most dreaded Hollywood dud the benefit of her kindness.

I'm sure she's ready for a long rest from the crazy cuckoos of the most visible and audible of loons in the news and celebrity sect.
