Newsweek Story on South Paints Untrue Vision

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The cover story in this week's Newsweek is entitled "The End of the South." Some of the story's observations ring true enough. Yet the tone of the piece, and its accompanying photos, paint an oversimplified "black and white" portrait of a land that is actually -- like most everywhere else -- a colorful mix of the flattering and the not-so flattering.

The main piece was written by award-winning writer Christopher Dickey, the son of the late, famed poet and novelist James Dickey, he of "Deliverance" fame.

Christopher Dickey is gifted. But the glasses with which he chose to view his native land for this article were tinted with preconceptions. His knowledge of the modern South and its politics is limited.

A quick check of his bio bears out my take on him. Dickey has served as the bureau chief for Newsweek in Paris (the one in France, not Texas). He's served previously at scattered news bureaus across the word.

It's likely that Dickey's view of how to evaluate the politics and people of the South in 2008 is something akin to how I might report on England today after having lived there 24 years ago. My compass for even attempting a directional read on the place would be dysfunctional.

Dickey's thesis, like most stereotypes, is partly true. The South is a region in transition. Sometimes turbulently so.

What's unsettling about the Newsweek piece is its failure to properly recognize that that much of the population along Dickey's sojourn -- the Carolinas, Tennessee and Georgia -- is concentrated largely in suburban and exurban areas. The demographic makeup of these concentrations of people are made up, sometimes overwhelmingly, by those originally from places north and west of "Dixie"; often young people, who know little about the Civil War, or about the civil rights, and care even less.

Yet many of the article's anecdotes center on the politics or the daily lives of people in rural parts of the South, who are an increasingly insignificant part of the whole population.

Dickey writes that, "People [here] remember what they want and call it history. That much is true almost any place in the world. But in the South, if people aren't careful, history can start to run their lives, even put them at risk." Huh?

Actually that passage is the set-up for a story he relates about his father's late brother, who kept a large collection of Civil War artillery in his basement.

Dickey misfires when he paints the impression that a lot of Southerners are obsessed about the Civil War. The fact is that most have little knowledge of or interest in that titanic, formative conflict of American history. Most simply don't give a hang; it has no relevance to their everyday lives. So what if he sniffed out some fringe group in rural Georgia who reenact Civil War battles? That scene hardly is representative of most people in Georgia, or anywhere else in the region.

Beyond Dickey's selective cultural observation, the photos chosen to accompany the article are wildly out of proportion to reality. They include a faded sign in the woods that says "Jesus Saves Vote"; a room full of bigoted collectibles such as KKK hoods and the old Georgia flag with its Confederate battle emblem; and a rundown store that is likely abandoned.

But my favorite was a snapshot of people watching a movie at a "drive-in" theater. What a hoot! At most, there are a handful of drive-ins in the state where that image was taken; and most of them were built at expensive mountain resorts as "retro" cool places for wealthy urbanites who want to get away for the weekend.

Why does all of this matter? As the CEO of a company that owns the well-respected D.C.-based Southern Political Report, we like to think we know our Southern politics.

Let's face it: The upshot of this article was to paint the South as a region struggling to emerge from a Civil War and civil rights obsession. A place where an African-American candidate for office -- Barack Obama -- can't win white votes.

Yet our most recent InsiderAdvantage survey of the presidential race in one of the states on which Dickey writes proves him dead wrong in his assumption that Obama has no chance to gain white support.

CNN exit polls show that John Kerry, a white Democrat, carried 23 percent of the white vote in Georgia in 2004. Obama already polls 23 percent among white voters there, and there are still a lot of undecided whites still to make up their minds. Where is this "history laden" barrier for Obama?"

Mostly inside Dickey's head.

Newsweek inaccurate?
Wow. Imagine. Newsweek having an article that is bias, lacking in factual content and slanted to prove a predetermined point... Who would have ever imagined such a thing? A writer who thinks people in the south are bigots, racists and more, works for Newsweek. Wow. I am just shocked.

Next you'll be saying that Newsweek tends to favor liberal politicians.

Of course I wonder (only sometimes) what they of Newsweek fame, would write about the folks in the Intermountain West; Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho... or of those "mountain folk" of West Virginia. My guess is that, when reviewing Newsweek articles, a person just might note a slight tendancy to shine a favorable light on large and "sophisticated" places like NY and LA - but I'm just guessing.

The facts
I would bet that as a southerner I have spent more time in New York, Chicago, LA and other liberal cities than our friend Dickey has ever spent in the south and I still don't have a clue as to what core values drive them socially or politically.

To think you could spend a few weeks in the south and think you have our culture, politics or core values figured out is the height of elitist self delusion.

One more thing
With 4 bad reviews here how does this rate a 4 average?

Oh, Goober Peas.....
Dickey is so far out of reality it's reprehensible, the fact that Newsweek fell for it shows a complete lack of credibility.

Dixie has turned from it's roots and is just another part of fly over country now. The Civil War and even our glorious history from the Revolution is going by the wayside. Our southern children unless homeschooled are being taught the politically (in)correct, rose colored glasses, version of history not the truth, good and bad.

Oh, Goober Peas
Dickey's an idiot. Newsweek is good only for TP and wrapping catfish.

edna
We used to sing that song when I was in grammar school. Do you think they still do?

Vic
When I went to school we did too.
No, is the answer they don't...Most people don't even know that goober peas are peanuts.
I homeschool and my kids do we spend a lot of time on songs and poems in each area we cover because they tell the "feeling" of the times.
Most people don't even know " I wish I was in "Dixie" was written by a Yankee.

Goober Peas
Sittin' by the roadside on a summers day
Talkin' with my comrades to pass the time away
Lyin' in the shade,underneath the trees
Goodness how delicious,eatin' goober peas
Chorus
peas,peas,peas,peas,goodness how delicious eatin' goober peas

Just before the battle,
The gen'ral hears a row he said the yanks are coming I hear them rifles now
He turned around in wonder, what do ya thinks he sees..The Georgia militia eating goober peas.

chorus

I think my song has lasted almost long enough,the subjects interesting but the rhymes are mighty rough
I wish the war was over when free from rags and fleas we'd kiss our wives and sweethearts and then we'd gobble goober peas...

edna
Ah, Dixie, I have that on a disk by the 97th Regimental String Band which is the best version I have ever heard.

Most people don't know that it was intended to be a love song.

Newsweek who ?
It's Newwsweek who seems to think they are still "relevant" dreaming of arguable past "glory"...I thought they went out of business a long time ago...at least they should have!

Back later
going for breakfast

Edna
When a horseman passes the soldiers have a rule
To shout out at their loudest, Mister, here's your mule"
But another pleasure, enchantinger than these
Is wearing out your grinders
Eating goober peas.

My kids loved to sing "Goober Peas".

Mr. Dickey is right....
The south is a horrible place. I would strongly advise folks from up North and out West not to move here.

Those that feel that they must could do us a favor and leave their "tax and spend" politics in the states that they've already ruined.

Dixie
When I hear Dixie I swell with pride and tears well up, I also do this with the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and the National Anthem.
I guess I'm the one out of it...
I had moved out west for the last almost 30 years and when I had the chance to move south again I looked forward to it because of it's patriotism I remembered from my youth..Well, it's for the most part gone out here and the sadness I feel is profound.
The South ain't gonna do it again...What a loss in American Culture...

Thanks pistol
I knew I had forgotten some of it..
I typed from memory...oops...senior moment
(though I'm not yet a senior)

edna
Yes, the South has been ruined by the nationization of the education establishment, TV, and migrations.

Sgt Relic

LOL, it's too late..look at Atlanta.

Edna
When i graduated from Fort Lauderdale High in 51, we selected the 2 students "Most Likely to Secede". Susanne "Suki" Brown and Robert "Zeb" Watkins, if memory serves. As for southern traditions, they are certainly diluted by the movement of the US population. On the other hand, i was born in Pittsburgh, and i have a strong appreciation.

Vic
Good morning. I trust you enjoyed your breakfast.

Great Posts
Thank you all for saying so well what those of who love the South know.

A Little Southern History

My Descendants came here in 1660 and settled in Pennsylvania afterwhich each generation moved south to Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas , Mississippi, Louisiana,then West to Texas.

The South DID NOT just appear , We were made up of Yankees!
The civil war was not about slavery. The North envied the south. After the war they encouraged the slaves to move up north not because of freedom but for CHEAP labor!

My family never owned slaves , only rich people owned slaves, the poor whites had to make it on their own or move on !

So why should all Southern people be condemned because of rich plantation owners?

Pistol
Good morning to you. I guess I enjoyed it as much as one can for a bowl of cereal with 2% milk.

I would love to go back to the good old days with the 3 egg ham and cheese omelet, hash browns/grits, and toast.

Doctors, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

Globug
LOL, how old are you?

"My Descendants came here in 1660"

Pistol
I guess I meant more of the downtown parades, the Pledge said everyday and spirit of pride in America. I wasn't necessarily writing about the some of the uglier aspects of more recent history. I lived outside Atlanta in the 60's and had a cross burned in our yard because we had black friends, I got bussed to school with police escorts,and I hate black-eyed peas.
I loved going to historical places singing songs like goober peas and knowing though the south didn't win we played an important part in defining the USA

Nashville Predators
When Nashville got a hockey team (nobody knows why) a prominent French Canadian coach sneered that he would not go there to coach because the people did not wear shoes and all sat around on bales of hay.

An outraged letter writing campaign ensued in which it was stated that a large number of people working in Nashville were in fact from Boston.

As for Atlanta, I lived there 17 years and whenever I want to be reminded why not to vote for Obama, I go back. Our subversive city motto was *I am not Black/I am not Gay/But I am from Atlanta/Anyway.*

But you go to Alabama and you will find that a large percentage of the people there of any colour are Republicans.

As a "new southerner"
I have been in GA for five years now. Yes, I am part of the large and sprawling "metro Atlanta" which takes up at least 30 cities now. The south is one of the most "equal" places I have ever lived. There are a large number of poor minorities and a large number of poor whites. It also has the largest number of upper middle class and rich minorities I have ever seen. Almost every time I meet a fellow African American, 8 times out of 10 they are a college graduate and many of those people have graduate degrees. Almost all of my friends are married and those that are not married tend to not have children either. They are so far from the stereotype of poor, uneducated, unwed mothers we see so often its amazing.
With that said, many minorities that I see "think" life is bad. Despite have high 5 and low 6 figure incomes they still believe "the man" is holding them down and they can not get ahead due to racism. Even when you point out they are doing better than most folks, they believe "the man" must be doing better than them. It is articles like Newsweek that help push this mental attitude forward.
With that said, most folks I know are transplants to the area and from what I have observed - GA K - 12 is terrible. Blacks, Whites, and Asians send their kids to private schools in record numbers and GA has a large homeschooling population. But, the low taxes keep industry moving here so as long as they don't mess with the taxes they will continue to thrive and grow.

Maybe the "real story"
is the "left coast" and NY elite can't believe the south is having positive population growth not due to simply an influx in illigal aliens and need to try and paint it in a negative light. While everyone that can is leaving the big tax big ego states they are proudly bringing their success, energy, and fat paychecks to the south.
If they can give folks the view that the south is made up of backwoods hicks, folks will give it a second thought.

stbmom
The MSM has been pushing that "down trodden" propaganda for a long long time. It's not just Newsweek, Time, or any one of the print media. It is ALL if the MSM. It is no wonder that all the rich black people you meet think that they are down trodden and are harrassed by "the man". LOL, this despite the fact that Atlanta has been under black control for the past four decades.

The same thing is prevalent on other topics such as the economy. Everyone thinks the economy is doing bad despite the fact that they are doing good. The economy will be doing "bad" as long as the media tells them that and the media will continue to tell them that as long as a Republicrat is in the WH.

But all that is a subject for a different column.

Oh, one other thing
"They" have been messingwith the taxes now for a long time. My property taxes have increased 500% in 25 years while the assessed value of my house has only increased by 15K.

Vic
Being picked on for being the skinniest kid in the schoolyard has its compensations by being a skinny 70 plus (albeit 20 pounds over my best weight). I still do the eggs and bacon breakfast.

Pistol
The problem isn't the calories so much as the cholesterol. (Although the calories could stand to come down also).

stbmom
The prosperity and growth of the South, as compared to northern states is due to the fact that its just plain cheaper to do business down here. Merit is better rewarded, and sloth is less rewarded. Rich people are no stupider than poor people and we all put our money where it will bring back the most gains. Mr Obama, and the whole US will get a lesson in economics if he gets in and tries to "tax the rich".

elitist fantasy
I am not a native but I have lived here for 14 years. I can't begin to tell you how offended I was by the inaccuracies and propaganda put forth in this issue of Newsweek. I would love to think that people do not still read this rag, but if you go to Newsweek online and look at the comments you will see that they do, and many have bought the premises of this article (?) hook line and sinker. Dicky takes a sliver of cultural truth and blows it up to form a story line that fits his own elitist world view. Not sure how long ago he lived here in GA but I hope he no longer considers himself Southerner, cause no one around here would. I live and work in the area of North Georgia he photographs and writes about. A few things he does not mention: 1. The University of Georgia is less than 20 miles away from the towns of Crawford and Monroe. Athens is a hotbed of liberal-think and rivals Berkeley in its radicalism although the University itself does have a small conservative base of students and faculty and staff. 2. Racism does not only exist in the South! Out West working class and poor blacks are still economically segregated by city or region. In CA think Richmond, parts of Oakland, and how about East LA? 3. Because someone chooses not to vote for Obama does not make one a racist. It would make one a realist, a moderate or a conservative. There will be plenty of registered Dems in Georgia that will vote for McCain, as the un-Obama. 4. While the KKK still exists in the South, it is an underground movement and not easily accessible. 5. We have plenty of pretty people around here that could have been chosen for photographic subject. Why did this not happen? Oh, I know. Did not fit his story line. 6. He is right. Southerners do not like to be told what to do. Neither do most Americans.

So many points to contend. So little space to do it in.

Sassygirl
The KKK is another myth from the MSM. The "hotbeds of activity" for the modern KKK are in Indianna and Illinois, not in the South but you would never know that from the "news".

The whole tax the rich thing...
Is merchantilism which King George III tried and failed at.
While I lament the southern values lost in the south, the reality is that outside the sprawling urban areas the south is having growth spurts.
In Western NC areas are developing and the average John Q. Public is more highly educated and making at or above middle class wages.

The mentality is sad to say pro-Obamanation somewhat because of MSM also because of the northern babyboomer transplants.
SC has some of the least expensive gasoline in the region.
How long would that last, With BO?

I firmly believe that most southerners have long been color blind to race, but instead,strongly oppose liberal tax and spend, big government, take away our unalienable rights type of philosophy.

Vic

That does not surprise me. I know they are not front and center in these parts. That must dissapint the media.

OBTW, My ancestors came from NC/SC at a time when the borders were not clearly defined.

My Great, Great Grandfather was kicked out of the large Quaker community there, for the 'Heinous crime' of 'Marrying Out'. Despicable!

He in his act of heresy, felt No indignity, and was in fact, somewhat incensed.

He moved his family to Tipton County, Indiana, and Thus, allowed My Great Grandmother, to be the first, Non Native American to be born in the County (Even before it became a county) in the Year Of Our Lord, 1834.

WE have maintained much of the Southern heritage, here in this exiled Land of Indiana.

Sadly, I had relatives on both sides of the War Between The States.

I do feel that it was good to hold the States together, but I also feel that the damage to the Constitution was terrible.

I also feel that this was the main start of the demise of "The Republic".

Paul River Rat, AKA, Ben Frankloid Rat, and, doggone it, sometimes I am just Rabid. I never had my shots, you know...

Confederate Monument in SC
At the top of this article was a picture of the Confederate Monument at the State House in Columbia, SC. I'm one who was driven out of my state (Maine) by leftist newcomers who ruined our state as they had ruined Massachusetts, and whose great-grandfather fought for the North, so I have a definite Yankee point of view. But I went on business and fell in love with SC (if not with the heat) and learned much.
I learned that the monument is a beautiful, moving tribute to brave men who fought for their homeland. What flag should we put on it - Nepal's? Anyone in SC should take a trip to see it.
Secondly, the racial harmony in rural SC where I was, should be studied and emulated by the North. As a black woman said to me "I hated it up North - they treated me like a strange exotic pet."
And not to worry Sgt Relic - I am considering a move to rural Orangeburg County, but while I never loved tax & spend (my state was one of two to vote against FDR's re-election) I will further state that I would never vote against any traditional way of doing business if I move there - I have too much respect for the people I met there to do to them what Massachusetts did to us.

foggytrucker
I am not that familiar with the Orangeburg area but I do know several things:

The taxes here (not Orangeburg) are going up faster than you can shake a stick at them. It seems that the socialist mantra of tax and spend has taken hold here as well.

Orangeburg is within easy driving distance of Charleston which you would absolutely love for visits. In fact, you would probably rather live in that area but the property values in Charleston are through the roof. Housing in most of the South right now runs about $100/sq ft in the county and less than that in the city limits; all except Charleston.

Although it is hot and muggy here in the summer, it does not have that “white sh*t” that comes down requiring massive amounts of shovel work and commute time everyday. You can also use a heat pump here for AC and heat which makes your utility bills much lower (that along with the 7 cent/kw rate).

Property taxes are usually low, but that is largely because the accessed value is low. The tax rate is comparable to a lot of the areas in the north.

Ratas y Ratones
Good morning. A couple items from your rambles evoked positive reaction. Your great great grandfather's excommunication reveals that the great American melting pot experiment has/is moved forward. It faces great challenges, including the Orwellian "Strength through diversity". Our strength is through the recognition of universal human values, regardless of external appearance or history. Today, grandfather would still be a Quaker, no? And there is a lot to be said for the deterioration of states rights post civil war. I tend to think that changing the selection of senators from appointment to direct votes marked a turning point, but i am not even sure whether this took place pre or post civil war. And kindly in the future, don't trifle with my digestion with mention of 2% milk and metamucil. Few things make my stomach heave, but these will do it.

So Much Misinformation!
Both the Newsweek article and Matt Towery's rebuttal are totally off the mark, and even most of the comments in defense of the South show how Southern history and culture have been successfully defamed and misrepresented and these falsehoods widely accepted as fact.

There is a wonderful book out that tells the story of the South and her people: Clint Johnson's Politically Incorrect Guide to the South. Southerners, read it and be proud of who you are! Our countrymen from elsewhere, read it and be educated! There are many souces of the truth today, but it takes effort to find them. This book, one in the Politically Incorrect Guides series, is a good start.

My preference is the South
I am Yankee born and have resided in Michigan, New York and Connecticut. I am now Southern settled and have lived in Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas but prefer Alabama. There are no places more friendly than the rural, semi-rural and suburban places in the South. What is most enduring is an almost complete absence of artificially cultured and hypocritical intelligensia.

Foggytrucker
Monuments to brave men are non too many. Its sad that so many times bravery is towards a flawed cause, but that is rarely seen at the time and by the soldier. The determination and committment shown by heroes giving all in hopeless cause, evokes admiration, even as one experiences relief those gutsy warriors lost. Remember that Japanese soldier who surrendered like in 1948. Quite understandably, he was iconized when finally returned home. Few people regard McCain's fortitude with anything but admiration, whether or not they support his cause.

Vic
Thank you, but I've been to Charleston. My hobbies are hunting, fishing, & 4-wheeling & I don't know what I'd do in Charleston. Western Orangeburg County suits me just fine & the folks there are wonderfully polite & friendly. But I will admit to enjoying the fresh seafood on the coast - McClellanville shrimp have spoiled me for what passes for seafood up here.

I also love to snowmobile & track deer - two pastimes I'd have to give up. But your weather does have its advantages, especially considering we just had one of the coolest springs & summers here & we fear it will be a cold winter. It's been a very cold summer in Alaska. If I do move down there though you are welcome to stop & visit if you pass my house - it'll be the one with a snowmobile converted to a flower planter in the front yard.

But not only is it fun to play in, our snow keeps the leftists in southern Wisconsin - not only do they hate the work, they're not smart enough to drive in it.

Know one thing - if I am ever a SC voter, there will be one more vote against taxes & big government.

rdk
That lack of artificiallity and psuedo-intelligentsia you find enduring (perhaps endearing?) existists in many rural areas, probably most. I remember being astonished as a young man visiting rural relatives and seeing how aware and informed they were, and how logical their conclusions were. And note foggytruckers remark about the black woman's attitude that she preferred the matter-of-fact acceptance she experienced in her southern location to the "special" treatment she perceived up north. I think this is probably more rural vs. urban than north vs south.

foggytrucker
LOL, I spent a winter in Saratoga Springs, NY and I grew to hate snow. I worked 12 hour shifts and had to get up early to shovel my car out in the parking lot, then "crawl" along work being on the lookout for the "balls on the tops of the antenae" approaching intersections.

One morning dug out the wrong car...arrggggh

I loved the people up there because they were conservative as well (as long as you stayed away from the Skidmore girls), but I hated the snow.

Vic, you wrote...
"The "hotbeds of activity" for the modern KKK are in Indianna and Illinois, not in the South..."

BULLETIN: The southern tier of counties in both of those states ARE SOUTHERN, ethnically and culturally.

Vic - A question
Do you know of any good guides for hog hunting in SC?

Vic
I live in Illinois near the Indiana border and I
too think that the KKK is essentially a Southern entity.

I hope, and it is my perception, that it has at
the very least gone underground and maybe even
disbanded altogether.

I think that is too much to hope for however.
Hate will always exist as long as we are here
on earth.

A little off the subject, but
Towrey - what did you think of the article in Newsweek on Obama's religion. I wish everyone could and would read that.

I don't think that one should vote for someone
because of their religion (or lack thereof) but
I believe that if Obama does become president
he will be one of the few Presidents in nearly
a century who is truly a Christian. Carter
being another one and probably Eisenhower.

Rebel with a cause
In reality it was not a civil war. the south did not fight to take control of the government in Washington. In fact, they were trying to escape from that government. Slavery became the central issue but that cause was only the visible symbol of the problem that the south believed existed.

Their real fear was an all powerful Federal government. This was something that even the founders recognized. The 10th amendment to the Constitution was to address this issue. It came under the banner of states rights. This issue predates the civil war by 30 years, back to the Nullification Controversy.

I cannot deny that slavery was an important issue in the south at that time. It was such a visible symbol of the economy of the south. You cannot believe in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution and still justify slavery.

Since that time anyone who attempts to speak of the 10th amendment or of the concept of states rights will be branded as a racist.

I am proud of my southern heritage. Many will not understand and I will not attempt to explain. I am also proud of this country. I do not dwell in self loathing for the mistakes of the south or this country.

The 10th amendment to the Constitution has been repeatedly ignored by Congress. The greatest fear of the south has come true. I am a proponent of limited government as my ancestors were. In that regard I remain an unrepentent rebel.

Tibby

KKK Activity
Born and raised in MI, educated in MI and OH. I never mixed much with those outside of my race until I moved to the south. We heard rumors of KKK activity in MI and there were some marches in OH when I was there (small scale, but none the less). I really don't have a big problem with Confederate Monuments - don't want to see them in DC, but local folks can have local heros. I believe many, if not most, confederate soliders were fighting for their home, land, and family - not slavery. I think schools have miseducated folks to the point where we think EVERY white person in the south owned slaves. That wasn't the case at all. Like most issues, the rich and upper middle class had slaves. The common folk and most fighting in the war did not own slaves.
I am not saying they loved Blacks and wanted them as neighbors, but I don't believe they were fighting to keep slaves. They is the same as saying our soldiers are "fighting for oil" in Iraq. Lets say the war was about oil (which I do not believe it is), the average soldier wouldn't benefit one bit from fighting for oil. No, they are fighting for land, safety, security, family, and yes country. The same with Confederates. Were they on the wrong side? Yes. Am I glad they were defeated? Yes. But, a brave heart felt battle is a brave battle none the less.

Sassygirl & the South
.
Your post is very much appreciated. We Southerners, of a by gone generation, are quick to believe that a non-southerner could never appreciate where we come from and where we go and why we are as we are. Surely our parents and grandparents had a similar idea of my generation, but it would not often come up as conversation as traditions were still carried on.

Today we have a new situation. Yes, many northerners move here for a better job or business opportunity or just as likely to get away from northern winters. News Week, the trash rag that it is, can write all the stories it wants to. Real people from Chicago to Connecticut have been discovering for years that the south is a pretty fine place, all things considered, and as in your case some many of them become converts and stand up for the South in the face of its' destruction by superior PC forces.

The South is not nor ever was a culture of the damned as some writers would like to paint it, but instead a culture of equanimity and patriotism. But as another poster said, let them write their lies. We only want the best of foreigners, northerners usually. Migration is good for the soul as is remembrance for the heart. Rarely do we find prophets in their own lands. You have to travel to know and a quick trip is not going to teach anything of value to anyone.
.
.

Michigander
The point I was making was that with the media it is always people in the South who are kluxers and neo-Nazis. When was the last time you saw a movie or TV special about the KKK, cross burning etc that takes place in Illinois? Your post does nothing more than illustrate and perpetuate the continued propaganda and myths of the modern media via a circular argument.

Your statement basically says “These people who are the kluxers of Indiana and Illinois are southerners because they are kluxers”.

If you could show that the kluxers of Illinois and Indiana are all transplanted people from Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and SC you may have an argument. You will not, because they are not, therefore your statement has no basis and invalid logic.

Since I got out of the Navy I have found that hunting has really changed and I have pretty much got out of the hunting business. Even my younger brother in GA has pretty much given up on it. You see, the problem is that all of the land that used to be available for hunting is now posted.

It used to be that you could go out in the lands next to the major rivers and hunt hogs, deer, turkey, and other game at will. This land was all owned by companies like GA-Pacific. They soon found that they could make a lot of money leasing these lands to hunting clubs and private people when they were not logging the land.

My brother did join a club for hunting in GA but then you have to put up with all the BS that the club officers vote in. The whole thing gets to be a hassle.

I guess to answer your question, no I am not familiar with any hunting guides but I am sure they are out there at the end of a Google search. I can help you find one if you like?

Vic, RE:
"If you could show that the kluxers of Illinois and Indiana are all transplanted people from Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and SC you may have an argument."

You're right. The vast majority of folks who settled Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois were from Virginia, Kentucky and Tennesee. Okay, you can say Kentucky isn't truly a southern state. But, like Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois, it's culturally & ethnically Southern.

BTW, here's a neat test to tell where you're from... http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

Michigander
I have seen that test.

The people whom settled....???? We are talking the modern KKK here and the attitudes generated by the MSM, not 1850.

H*ll, the same people settled ALL of the midwest.

Invented South
Face it guys. Newsweek is just the latest version of the top dog creating a South that it wants not as it is. Were it not for our relative intransigence on the lost cause and state's rights the NYT, Time, and Newsweek would have to invent a villain in the American race saga. When after all was the last time a Yankee admitted that Boston shipowners shipped slaves as part of the Triangle Trade (sugar, rum, slaves)? I also seem to remember race riots in Boston when they tried to de-segregate the schools there. BTW most southern cities are far less segregated than their northern counterparts. Still in all many of our stereotypes are self inflicted.

Ssshhhhhhhh
Sgt Relic, Reply #13 is right the South is horribly hot, humid, and down right mean!
"We don't need no fixin' though."
All you "do-gooders" just stay away.
When outsiders get involved things are ruined, schools are the best evidence of this.

If you travel over this country and take the time to listen you will find people are the same everywhere. Some are good, some bad; some educated, some not; some are bigoted, some not.
Money does not buy class and quality is not determined by a location and its history.
The preconceived ideas put forth by an obscure, ill-informed author are not important.

The South, Obama, Jimmy Carter & Nazis
Thanks, Dixie Dame, for mentioning my book The Politically Incorrect Guide To The South. This Newsweek article is actually kind of late in claiming the racist Ol' South won't vote for that stupendously wonderful gift from the gods, Senator Obama. New York magazine ran a story several weeks back claiming that no "Confederate state" would vote for Obama. This treatment of The South in a political year is certainly not new. I still remember the national news magazines in 1976 writing about Jimmy Carter's home region as if it were a foreign, third-world nation that had to be explained to the rest of the U.S.

And for all you Yankees who think racists live in The South ? The national headquarters for the Nazi party in the U.S. is in Minneapolis. Last I looked, that is way, way on up yonder in The Nawth.

Michigander. . .
Having been born and raised in southern Virginia (and my high school was about 2/3 black), and spent much time in various parts of the Old South, I always find the Yankee bigoted belief that the modern KKK and "white power" to be a current SOUTHERN problem somewhat amusing. Given that my mother is from Minnesota, I served in the Army, and my hobbies take me to the Northeast on a regular basis, I have had a great opportunity to compare racial (and historical) attitudes across a wide swath of this nation.

I've never met a member of the Klan or a neo-Nazi who lived here in the South (although I will admit they exist), but I have met quite a few in the MID-WEST, including IOWA. (Who the heck, other than Catholics, are they marching against in IOWA?!? Drove all the way across that sate and spent a week there, and the ONLY black people I met were tourists from TORONTO!)

Last I checked, the real hot beds of white racists are the Midwest (and southern counties whose population derives from southern states 150 years or not, IL & IN are definately Midwestern states), some northern mountain states (mostly becuase they moved there to be all alone in a "white" state), and the Northeast urban areas. I regularly hear NY & NJ white urbanites use racist language that would get their heads kicked in by Virginia REDNECKS. . . and having spoken in detail with many of them, the Yankees mean it when they use that language.)

Frankly, the South is all too aware of the cost of racism (especially institutionalized racism), and by and large, we are not about to go through that again.

Here is the Magazine with the article that Towery is referencing. It reads like the typical Democratic Party talking points except he goes out of his way to either find rednecks or turn every reason someone does not plan on voting for the Vomit into racism.

It is truly BS

OBAMA MARXISTS OUT TO SLAM CONSERVATIVES
IN FLAG CITY OHIO, FALSE OBAMA RUMORS ARE FLYING! BY ELI SASLOW......WASHINGTON TIMES

OBAMA MARXIST SURROGATES IN THE MEDIA ARE COMING OUT OF THE WOOD WORK. BELOW IS AN ARTICLE THAT WAS IN THE WASHINGTON TIMES BY ELI SASLOW WHO PRETTY MUCH DUBBED MY WIFE'S HOMETOWN A RACIST CITY. THE CITY IS CALLED FLAG CITY BECAUSE ONCE THERE WAS A MANUFACTURING PLANT THERE THAT MADE AMERICAN FLAGS FOR THE UNITED STATES. IT IS TRUE THAT THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN LOYAL REPUBLICAN GROUND IN OHIO BECAUSE IT VERY RARELY EVER GOES DEMOCRAT...MAYBE THATS WHAT IS EATING AT THEM. TAKE A LOOKE AT THIS ARTICLE AND I WILL TRY TO PROVIDE THE REST OF IT OR THE LINK.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- On his corner of College Street, Jim Peterman stares at the four American flags planted in his front lawn and rubs his forehead. Peterman, 74, is a retired worker at Cooper Tire, a father of two, an Air Force veteran and a self-described patriot. He took one trip to Washington in 1989 -- best vacation of his life -- and bought a statue of the Washington Monument that he still displays in a glass case in his living room.

He believes a smart vote is an American's greatest responsibility. Which is why his confusion about Barack Obama continues to eat at him.

On the television in his living room, Peterman has watched enough news and campaign advertisements to hear the truth: Sen. Barack Obama, born in Hawaii, is a Christian family man with a track record of public service. But on the Internet, in his grocery store, at his neighbor's house, at his son's auto shop, Peterman has also absorbed another version of the Democratic candidate's background, one that is entirely false: Barack Obama, born in Africa, is a possibly gay Muslim racist who refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

RickR... Right On!

I have visited, or lived in... Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Virginia, W. Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida.

And from my honest experience... White Southern Bigots have nothing on White Detroit Bigots.

Not to mention Detroit is the most segregated large city in America (enlightened?).

And add one more fact... These White Bigots are all Democrats. Not one elected politician here is a Republican.

I wish I were in Dixie :)

Importing bad government
The article is all true; Northerners, Midwesterners, stay the h*ll away! That's the message I'd like to send to all those northerners thinking of moving to the south. I live just outside of Augusta, the second largest city in Georgia; and we have had an influx of carpetbaggers here that would have shamed the original '65 versions. Tax collections -mostly in the form of property taxes- have doubled every five years, while the population has only gone up on average five percent a year; the government has outstripped even these resources building political pork projects which benefit a small minority clustered around a 'golden triangle' in the northern part of the county (where the hereditary landowners live) while schoolteachers have to walk students from school as there are no sidewalks. One teacher was killed just days ago. And as I write, they're putting together ANOTHER multimillion dollar bond issue for landscaped parks for the rich, a natorium, a 100 million dollar sports complex the neighboring government -known for its spendthrift ways- refuses to build, and other "necessities." What does this have to do with the article? Just this; most of the folks doing this are imports backed by old money who put a neutral face on their rapacity.

~~~
Pistol,
Re: 'The digestion thingy', Yeah, it does the same thing to me.
The major destruction of our Republic started with some of Lincoln's actions and has simply accelerated from then on.
Wow, I learned something today. I always though Macon was the second largest city (I'm from GA originally). I had to look it up and it appears that Augusta has really shot up there and long passed Macon.
Carlos...good post my friend and so true
Carlos Writes:
"And add one more fact... These White Bigots are all Democrats. Not one elected politician here is a Republican."
Aslan Writes:
Carlos, my friend....I laughed so hard when I read this I almost fell out of the chair...but its so true...my wifes hometown is in Findlay, Ohio...and check out what this Marxist Jewish writer named Eli Saslow wrote about the town and its people...the link is in the previous post I posted....you hit the nail on the head..they are the real racists and bigots because they don't really know anything about these people and are concocting all kinds of untrue things and myths to write that they feel might add to some sensational hollywood version of Racism in America ...hosted by liberals like Campbell Brown on CNN
sir aslan....
You're right, that clown is a Marxist. His article basically described working-class Whites as 'Unenlightened' or just plain 'Ignorant'. What a Turd.
Georgia's in Play
because Georgians are very conservative. As such, we are completely unenchanted with McShamnesty. Both Georgia Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, were involved heavily upfront with the Shamnesty deal with Teddy Kennedy and McShamnesty himself. When Georgians found out about it, IT WAS HELL TO PAY FOR THESE TWO. We have NEVER let them forget it since! We're watching them now like hawks. Most of us Georgians unlike this guy, Towery, who purports to know all things Southern, and the blithering idiot he writes of, Dickey, are way beyond Conservative. We despise the rampant UNCONSTITUTIONAL CORPORATE WHOREDOM in DC, of which Towery and Dickey most assuredly approve in BOTH parties. Northerners, Liberals, New York City types, and CINO's all seem to have no problem whatsoever with Beltway Politics and with what the government in DC has become - a Socialist Corporacracy because THEY are the ones who benefit from and work in all of the bureaucracies in DC. It is only THEIR schools that are labeled ELITE. We in the South laugh our bleeps off at such nonsense. These people are truly living in a Liberal fantasyland insular bubble and have no qualms about enforcing the American People to foot CORPORATE DEBT. That is ALL the government in DC is today - PURE 100% Socialism disguised lately as "Compassionate Conservatism". The South is not through with the Civil War because the stupid idiots up North never learned a damn thing about what our Founding Fathers intended this government to be. The Founding Fathers would be shocked to see that DC has become government for the highest bidder, nothing but a socialist welfare state for Corporate America that is financing by exorbitant taxation of the American People. If they were alive today, I have NOT ONE DOUBT IN MY MIND that they would be planning the NEXT REVOLUTION.
Hope
Let's hope that Mr. Dickey is correct in his assertion of history laden barriers for Obama in the South. Obama is a pure socialists. At least the traditionalists in the South still believe in individual resposibility and resist collectivism. But Mr. Towery is correct in at least one regard. If 23% of the people in the South support Obama it is because we have been invaded by a large number of Northerners. And unfortunately most of these transplants are without values.
Yep, same song not Dixie
The south is full of cornpones and inbreds, so I read from this dolt Dickey.
The only reason for this spin is the skeptical folks of the south are quickly usurping that electoral power held by the north sense the 1870s.
This has the commies in a panic. They are trying to shame us into the likeness of their own debauchery.
Are we going to let them?
Many accurate observations here
Having lived in the Carolinas and Florida and now, sadly, living in the socialist state of Massachusetts, I can attest to the fact that people are much kinder and far less prejudiced in the south than in the north!
Oh I wish I was in Dixie...
And Newsweek
is nothing more than a GIGANTIC Liberal mouthpiece! Written as they want it - not as it is...no matter the subject!
Thanks Cape Conservative
I am from the south and proud of it. I too, have visited Socialist States and spent a little time in large Socialist Cities, such as Newark, N.J., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Madison, Wi., NY City, Chicago, and thanks, but no thanks, give me my beloved south anytime, except for Atlanta, Ga., Birmingham, Al and some Southern Cities that have been taken over by Incompetent and Corrupt Liberal Democrats who have turned these once proud and prosperous cities into ghettos and and people who used to be hard working citgizens now have children and grandchildren living in slums and living off welfare. They look much like Baltimore or Chicago now. But, you can still find some nice little towns and communities that have not changed all that much except now, Liberalism has brought thuggery and drugs even to small towns, thanks to Liberalism, and now, you are seeing large numbers of squatters who do not speak English, and are generally anti-social. The New Reconstruction of the South that was started by that scoundrel Lyndon B. Johnson was the beginning of the end of the south and of the country. Still, thanks for the lament, and I still rather live here than any of those NE Socialist States, Midwest Socialist States, and of Course all of the West Coast is long Lost to Socialism. Maybe the big Earthquake really will drop California off into the deep blue waters of the Pacific, and hopefully Pelosi will be their on vacation when it occurs.
Georgia's In Play
because of guys like Bob Barr, a former GOP Georgia Congressman from the ATL suburbs, who is the Libertarian Party alternative to Tweedle Dee McShamnesty and Tweedle DumbasHell. The Conservatives who run the State Government here in Georgia were among the first to oppose the apostate Federal government's corporate whoredom in DC that elected to abandon its Constitutionally mandated duties to protect the sovereignty of the United States. The Georgia legislators here in the state were among the first in the nation to pass all sorts of anti-illegal immigration legislation to counteract the whoredom in DC and abandonment of the interests of We the People, behavior worthy of IMPEACHMENT & REVOLUTION! Many Georgians such as myself want 3rd Party rule in DC. There is no other solution to the madness in DC but Secession or all out Revolution. With a favored son in the Libertarian Party, many Georgians will abandon both mainstream parties' UNCONSTITUTIONAL policies that have DESTROYED and continue to destroy this nation. The GOP and the DEMS have become just 2 brands of Socialism to satisfy the corporate welfare state, keeping corporations solvent at taxpayers' expense so the corporate whores in either party in DC can be re-elected to carry on the endless cycle of corporate tyranny of the masses piling on more national debt for We the People with each piece of socialist insanity they pass. It will never stop without Secession or Revolution or 3rd party take-over by WE THE PEOPLE! The Founding Fathers could never have conceived of the influence of mega-corporations, especially globalist corporations with PC socialist agendas. When we edit the Constitution the next time after the Revolution or 3rd party political takeover, we will have to insure that we include such a clause forbidding corporate influence.
Newsweek--Liberal Rag
This Dickey boy is no southerner and like many who want to make a name for themselves by writing about things they know nothing about, they take an ignorant liberal slant and stereotype people and places. I ran into this a lot when I entered the U.S.A.F. in 1970. I met my first genuine racist while in boot camp. This little smart mouthed puke was from Philadelphia, Pa. and he was black. When he first heard I was from Alabama and knew absolutely nothing about me, he called me a racist, and said, "I know what a bunch of white trash comes from Alabama." Well, I knew right then and there that racism truly does exist. I had never witnessed racism from blacks or whites while I was growing up in rural Alabama. This boys whole world view was from the liberal media who sensationalized things that were not even close to the truth about Alabama or the people from Alabama or the south generally. Ignorance can be deadly. Another example of this type of writing by somebody just interested in selling a story was that old Race Hustler Alex Haley who did that 1970's piece that was turned into a mini-series and aired as a way of radicalizing and pissing off blacks to get them to raise hell and vote Democrat. That outrageous movie was not even close to what slavery or slave owners were like in the old south. But, it got a lot of air play, and all of a sudden, a TV miniseries had rewritten history, to make it appear that all southern slave owners were a bunch of cruel brutes. If you ever truly have an opportunity to read some factual accounts of slaves and slaveowners and the relationship that existed, you would find Alex Haley's version an exaggerated version of a minute minority. So, Dickey needs to write of what he knows and not make an attempt to rewrite current history or past history of the south.
Newsweek
This 'putdown'of the south is very telling. It tells why many publications have gone the way of the dinosaur.
Almost every day we read thout another cutback,layoff etc. at another newspaper or magazine. Even the Old Gray Lady.
They have gotten so liberal,they are not even good for birdcages or fish-wrapping anymore. They are no better than the National Inquirer.At least the Inquirer prints revelant stories,like John Edwards' frolicking around.
Reply to Take Back The Gov in Ga
Right on buddy. I have two blogs on TH in Al. Take Back Our Communities
Take Back Our Schools
Take Back Our Nation
I, too, am all for a third party, and do not like tweedle dee or tweedle dumb politics as it has gone for the past 40 years or so.
But, this time around, I have to vote McCain, because as much as I detest both parties right now, I detest and fear for the country for the first time in my adult life, should this Puppet Obama get elected. The Liberal Democrats, who are out and out Marxists and on top of that, many are just plain stupid and ignorant, and all of them are corrupt, and if their Puppet Stooge Obama should be elected, there would be nothing but Rubber Stamping Communism all over the country, and on top of that, they would appoint many federal judges. These people with full power, would cause this old North Georgia boy in my heart (lived in Fannin and Gilmer counties for about 12 years) to put on my backpack and hit the A.T. to live for awhile, because this lethal combination would sureley start a revolution, and I do not plan to get caught in the crossfire. These liberal democrats are a reckless, ignorant, arrogant bunch of fools who do not have a clue how pissed main stream America truly is. Obama is typical of their arrogance and ignorance.
This time, Vote McCain, and vote Libertarian in all other elections at every level of government from now on out, but we cannot risk an Obama presidency. Stay in touch.
On Hillbillies, the South and self-image
The reason inaccurate stories and myths are perpetuated in this age of readily available information is because they make someone feel good about themselves.
This is why the coastal elites so enjoy and invest belief in tales of the supposed 'hick South' -- it allows many of them to feel superior to someone. And we all need that, don't we?
They don't really know what to make of somebody like me -- a career soldier who grew up two miles outside of Gurdon, Arkansas who reads Thucydides for fun. I don't fit with their stereotypes. And could they but see it, very few folk DO fit with their cherished stereotype. But seeing past the caricature would ruin the ego-bolstering effect, I suppose, so people choose to remain in ignorance of the actual conditions in other regions.
And oh, by the way, I know grocers in Gurdon who have no idea how to rig a trotline but who nonetheless cherish an image of themselves drawn straight from 'Country Folk Can Survive'. It works both ways.
I suppose its relatively harmless, it's been going on for generations and we haven't died from it yet.
Southern to the core
I will say that there is still one thing we Southern folk still cling to - Honey if you don't like the way we do things then get the hell out. We don't need a bunch of uppity Yankees, Europeans, Californians who invade to start telling us about them. We don't like you even though we will mind our manners.
But make no doubt about it. We laugh at you behind your back and you will never fit in.
And as far as apologists like dickey go - you probably couldn't fit in anywhere so you have to get back at those who just were not impressed by you.
Mr. Dickey Is Stereotypical
Mr. Dickey must not actually know much about the south, current or past. The south always had an aristocratic background. The early European Stock Southerners were generally the educated elite, whereas the northeastern states tended to be technically oriented. The south produced and still produces statesmen, generals, and many of our presidents were of the south. The south is and has generally been much more sophisticated and philosophical than our counterparts in the north east.
The truth is that people are more alike than different. Some of the most countrified (rural) men that I met when going into the U.S. Air Force in 1970, were from Up State New York, Missouri, Texas and Indiana. Folks from farms are just folks from farms, no matter what part of the country you come from. That is the beauty of America, we were truly a melting pot, back in the days when immigrants wanted to come here and were willing to follow the legal route to get here. Once here, they appreciated the effort, and time that it took, because they were not Living In America, the Land Of The Free and Brave, and they knew they had the right and the opportunity to compete and become all they could become, but it took effort.
The problem today, all over the country, is that we have people invading our country, and it is too easy to do so, and they do not struggle for anything. And, that is why they do not appreciate this country, our values, our traditions, our customs, and not even our language. Yet, they want to Take from This Country and Give Nothing Back.
This Lack of Appreciation for this country is what happens When You Do Not Have to Work For What You Get. The Welfare system has done the same thing. When you do not work for what you have, you have no respect or gratitude for what you get for doing nothing.
That is why we need to take back our Country, and Demand Leadership that Is willing to Dismantle the Welfare State, and to Enforce Our Borders, and to Enforce the Rule of Law, and Get the Illegals out of this country, that they protest against and have no respect for. We need to end All Free Rides.
Vote No To Obama, he is Promising even More Government Spending for those Who Produce and Contribute Nothing.
Vic
Were you born and raised in the Holy City?
I am a native Charlestonian who has been away the last 20 years. It is so sad to see what has happened over the years to the real estate market.I visit my family every summer and want so badly to come home despite the high cost of living.
I remember a way of life that holds so many wonderful memories.I thought everyone was honest, polite and just downright decent . That is how we treated one another.Memories of family get togethers, fried chicken,the beaches,walking the streets at night and feeling safe,saying yes Ma'am and yes sir and being taught to respect everyone especially your elders.
My Father passed away about six years ago. His funeral procession traveled through some of the most crime riddened streets of Charleston to get to the cemetery.
Everyone stopped and saluted his flag draped coffin.
I am so proud to be a Southerner.
Newsweek Story on the South
People can legitimately differ on the accuracy or completeness of any verbal or visual portrait of the south. It's complicated -- more than most American regions.
But the assumption that because Christopher Dickey lives in Paris and isn't based here, he hasn't got solid first hand knowledge of the south is mistaken. In fact, he returns at least once or twice a year to Georgia and South Carolina, where much of his family still lives, and is otherwise in regular contact with them. Between airplanes (it's not all that far from Atlanta to Paris) and the Internet and Skype, it's just not all that hard to stay connected.
Dickey may now have a mid-atlantic accent, but start him talking about the south and it unconsciously shifts to one that wouldn't have been out of place in an outtake f "Deliverance." Squeal like a pig if you don't believe me.
