Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Last Tuesday night's results from Florida in both the Democratic and Republican Party presidential primaries were what I expected, and then some.

Since well back into 2007, this column has been predicting that Florida would decide both the Democratic and GOP nominations. I believe it did, and in the process has blown apart the political world we have known for decades.

First, John McCain. He's the ultimate "outsider" within his own Republican Party. Neo-cons, establishment GOP bluebloods and just about every too-cool-for-school Republican faction have long held him in contempt. Now he's probably on his way to being the Republican Party nominee for president.

He has wrought pure bedlam inside the Washington Beltway. From talk-show hosts to longtime K Street lobbyists, the jig is up. They must now either embrace McCain and his moderate (or liberal) instincts or shut down for business.

There are two absolute truths here. First, for every Republican who has felt left out of an exclusive rich man's GOP country club, McCain's calm but resounding independence is a moment that declares the end of the GOP establishment as we have known it.

Here's the other truth: John McCain can, on some issues, be just about as far off from the traditional GOP scorecard as one can get. From the Bush tax cuts to tort reform, McCain has blazed a trail of working with the Democrats on often seemingly GOP issues. That's the part about McCain that gives conservatives heartburn.

But there's heartburn and then there's nausea. In the world of politics, the name Hillary Clinton sends the very same ilk I described above into fits of rage. Well, guess what? Get ready to have plenty of fits, guys and gals, because Hillary and Bill have once again outsmarted the dim-witted Howard Dean, the leader of the Democratic National Committee.

Dean didn't think that Florida would matter. He refused to allow candidates to campaign in the state. It was his penalty for the state's GOP-dominated legislature having moved the primary date up, to follow so soon after his beloved Iowa and New Hampshire.

Well, Mr. Dean, Florida matters. With a massive turnout in a state that has a single county that's more populated than the whole state of Iowa, Florida Democrats spoke so loudly that not only could they be heard all the way to California, but by the stubbornly devoted populist candidate John Edwards as well. He beat even Republican Rudy Giuliani to the punch in exiting the race before next week's "Super Tuesday" vote.

Hey, Howard: You and the DNC made idiots of yourselves. And now you have to pray the state forgives you in November for dissing its Democrats in January.

A political earthquake is under way. Edward's exit clears the way for white supporters of his candidacy to now consider Clinton in southern states. That's where Obama's coalition of support has been African-Americans, plus a sliver of white Democrats. And in really big states in other regions -- where she's already ahead in the polls -- Clinton now has retrorockets pushing her to the nomination.

Make no mistake: Much of the Democratic establishment in this nation had abandoned Hillary Clinton. The newspapers that once endorsed Bill were suddenly boosting Obama. Bill Clinton, the oft-proclaimed "first black president," had been in news accounts suddenly turned into some bigoted old man. Just as it appeared that all who wanted the Democratic Party to turn hard left were on their way, Florida dropped a huge bomb.

Will John Edwards reappear on the scene? Not as a power broker at a national convention. But perhaps in other roles. One does not give up an additional week of campaigning, knowing full well that it benefits one opponent over the other, without some thought of a political pot of gold under a future rainbow.

So now comes the hard part. As Obama fever starts to break out into a cold sweat, what do those who had their foot on Hillary Clinton's throat do? Do they restore Bill Clinton to the hero of African-Americans; and if not, can the Democrats turn out this critical part of their coalition in November?

And as for the Republicans, how do those who fought John McCain -- not just recently, but for decades -- find a way to embrace his candidacy? More important, how will they ever erase their attitudes from his very long memory? A long, long memory.

MCCain's Hombre

When I heard McCain's Hispanic Outreach guy was none other than Smiling Juan Hernandez, I knew John McCain has heard nothing we have had to say.

Smiling Juan Hernadez
We know who he is, we know his loyalties are to Mexico, we know he wants to erase our borders and immigration laws.

JOHN MCCAIN, YOU NEED A NEW HEARING AID

Smiling Juan Hernandez
In case you don't know him, he used to work for the Mexican govt., lately he has been shilling for "rights" for illegal aliens in this country. He has said he wants Mexicans to remain Mexicans even if they are living here. His loyalties are to Mexico, not U.S.

Questions for illegal alien apologists like John McCain:

Why does The National Council of the Race (la raza in spanish) and the Chamber of Commerce get to negotiate a "Comprehensive Shafting of The American Citizens" behind closed doors? Since when does an organization representing foreign nationals breaking our laws get to rewrite our immigration laws to suit the lawbreakers? Isn't this akin to allowing NAMBLA to rewrite our laws regarding child predators? Or allowing organized crime syndicates to rewrite racketeering, gambling, prostitution, and extortion laws?

We The People are being told by our representatives that we should sit down and shut up while they invite in the entire world. We The People should get some say in this matter. Another amnesty will set off a stampede like we have never seen before. There is not much time to save our country. All the money and power are on the side of shoving this amnesty down our throats. The RNC wants an amnesty candidate, don't vote for one.

the end is near, folks
Presidente Jorge was the beginning of the end... now we will get more of the same-- another open borders RINO. The RINOS had already turned off conservatives in 2006, but THIS tears it! All the old man has going for him, assuming you agree about Iraq, is that. Otherwise, he is a card-carrying lib on many critical issues, and a quisling at best on scamnesty... America will disappear if we do not stanch and reverse the ILLEGAL invasion, but the equivocating McQuisling has no more desire to do that than Presidente Jorge Bush. Your Senate this week is working on further commitments to pay ILLEGALS your S.S.

I worked in Reagan's campaign and then for Daddy Bush, albeit less enthusiastically. I have voted Republican faithfully for almost 40 years, but McAmnesty will cause me to stay home. The left kept saying they feared him the most, just as Brer Rabbit kept tellin' Brer Fox not to throw him into that brier patch. He will lose worse than Bob Dole, probably considerably worse. Maybe then the Republicans will wise up and decide that they must stand for something different than the left-- McAmnesty does not truly do that. I expect neoCONS like most columnists here on TH to be satisfied with him, and they know that Shrillary would not close those 18 permanent bases in Iraq either, which was the REAL goal of the Saddam take-out that so few understand.

Romney's Swan Song
Romney wasn't happy about the criticism McCain leveled at him about timetables in Iraq. He said it was a dirty trick because it came days before Florida. Well, maybe so, but it should also serve as a comfort to nervous Republicans about McCain's ability to play hardball in the general. McCain may seem like a guy who likes to reach across the aisle but he's not afraid to get dirty. McCain will be a very clever general election candidate; it won't all be kumbaya with Clinton or Obama.

Romney's pushback, btw, that if this was an issue, then why didn't he raise it earlier, wasn't a great debate comeback moment. As I've noted before, Romney just doesn't come across well when he's angry.

Overall, Romney seemed simply ticked off. It was as if he realized the end was near and he didn't know how to stop it. He tried to go after McCain, politely mind you, but didn't trip the newly crowned frontrunner up.

McCain won by 5 Points!
How can you just give in, when he won by 5 lousy points?
You seem to forget that Many more Didn't vote for McCain than did. I also read reports that said that there were a lot of democrats wo registered for the primary as republicans since their votes were worthless on their side. Add the retired military who voted for mcCain, I'd say his odds of repeating on super tuesday are less than ideal.

Romney won with Conservatives, not McCain.

If mcCain gets the nomination, there will be a dem in the white house. Far too many conservatives will write in their dog's name before voting for another "compassionate conservative". If we're going to get democrats in action, they may as well be Real democrats. Why put a republican face on more failed liberal policy?

Jackpine Savage
Write in my dog's name? Not hardly. I'm leaning towards Donald duck. If the primary voters can't select someone who shares at least a few of my principles, i am through holding my nose. This is a representative govt, the people are going to get what they want, and they will get it, good and hard.

So now its not the electorate
who are to be feared by the elected

"find a way to embrace his candidacy? More important, how will they ever erase their attitudes from his very long memory? A long, long memory."

Just the fact that this last passage has a sense of reality to it should cause one to rethink their support for McCain, alas no energy will be spent on the thought and dredfuly a McCain ticket seems almost foreordained.

Does Treason qualify you for POTUS?

It is sickening to think someone who can not uphold their sworn obligations to protect and defend the Constitution of this country is being talked about and considered for its highest office when they have committed Treason.

R.I.P. GOP
The only thing on this earth I can imagine worse than a Hillary presidency is a McCain in office. If he is GOP nominee we conservatives will bow out this November.

Hope is not lost!
You just have to reconsider who can still win if conservatives will work together:

The Saving of the GOP & Conservatism
There is yet a clear path to victory, just reconsider Gov Huckabee:

http://voteforhuckabee.blogspot.com/2008/01/five-reasons-hu ck-can-win-despite.html

Or accept McCain and allow his ascendency to become inevitable, and the GOP to go the way of the Whigs.

"Rape and Pillage Society"
Zel Miller's party left him and mine is leaving me. McCain is not steamrolling, but due to stupid rules, and Evangelical fanatics, McCain is taking South Carolina (2/3 of her people voted against McAmnesty) with 33 percent, Florida nearly the same way, except surprise, the huge majority of Johns votes came from Cubans and Hispanics. Fred had no stomach for the fight. Only after Romney is gone and the Regan conservatives have left Huckabee in McCains dust will the true Republicans realize the GOP is gone. Many of us who believe in the rule of law, cannot vote Huckabee over destroying public property and states evidence. If outgoing Gov. Blount did that here in Missouri where he is being sued by a former staffer, he would be hung. Only in the home of Hillary and Tucker, do we have this level of corruption!
http://www.judicialwatch.org/judicial-watch-announces-list- washington-s-ten-most-wanted-corrupt-politicians-2007

Goodbye GOP, Hello Unites States of Mexico. Mike you finished behind Rudy in Fla. Give up the delusion and mend fences with Romney. What could a Romney/Huckabee ticket do? How about keep Hillary out of the Casa Blanca? How about stop McCain-Kennedy? Otherwise we nominate a Republican McGovern candidate, then when the Dems have full control, "The Great Society" will look like a kids game. Wake up Republicans!!
Napolean met his Waterloo, the GOP will meet its McGovern.

Take Comfort
Conservatives, take comfort in the fact that you are not suffering alone. If you are all about to throw up at the prospect of voting for John McCain, just think how we Democrats feel at the prospect of voting for Hillary Clinton. The Clintons' despicable use of racist messages aimed toward Barack Obama over the past couple of weeks has left many of us Democrats appalled, horrified, and disgusted. But our seven-year sentence of George W Bush will motivate us, nonetheless, to do all possible for a change of cast in Washington.

Sgt Relic
McCain, of all the candidates has been the one actually part of the power structure in congress that has put us where we are. He is indeed the establishment candidate. In accordance with my philosophy of throw the rascals out, i can not not for him. I'd go with BHO first, at least he is an empty suit, a blank slate and might have a teeny chance of being a decent president. McCaain is business as usual.

Savage99
While I don't agree on Obambi, I do prefer the Dems being in office when they screw it up like they've screwed up the Congress. We'll get hit again with their pacifist tendencies, and it'll set them back 25 years! Then, we can get REAL Conservatives like Jindal, Hunter, and Steele in office!

DANG!
Forgot to add that part ONE of a five part series, covering FDR, JFK, LBJ, CArter, and Clinton, to find out the lousiest POTUS in US history. So far, the Great Socialist FDR is being flayed.

http://noliberalspin.townhall.com/

Where liberals fear to tread.

To those who refuse to vote
Republican if McCain is the candidate: you are fools! If there is a Democrat President as well as a Democrat Congress, there will be no need for compromise of any sort. Our country will indeed be a one-party system--and you will be to blame!

Vote for McCain
or hillary if it comes to such a choice I might stay home. My wife says vote for him but I think Thomas Jefferson said it best, in matters of style go with the flow but in matters of conscience stand like a rock against the flood.
Warmongering McAmnesty is not my guy.

Osthode
Funny how those as yourselve's didn't think about that when the GOP was given the power, and promptly ran up a $3,95 trillion deficit in six years. Is this what you're afraid of - a repeat? But then that's the point for conservatives, we're being asked to vote for a party - not just a president - that has demonstrated what it truly believes - as opposed to what it says.

We
already have a 1 party system, partly because of the parties & the media's insistance on pushing the lowest common denominator.
We need more parties with enough backing to get some press or we need to require equal coverage of all parties. Something has to give. We can't keep letting the media decide who is a "viable" candidate.

who sullied the punch bowl?
I have been morose since McAmnesty took Fl., but the left was gonna' win anyway. Presidente Jorge has stunk it up so badly (profligate war on the wrong bad Islamics, embracing ILLEGALS, growing govt./spending $ like a drunken sailor 'Crat, general fecklessness) that it has become a question of how big the blowout will be. RINOS like Jorge still control the party of Reagan now.

I disagree with some who imagine that McQuisling has the best chance to win for conservatives... I think that the left has cleverly pushed that a la Brer Rabbit just as the open border ilk opines that we cannot deport 12 million, which is a false choice-- we don't have to deport anybody-- just enforce the law, and they would repatriate attritively. When Howard Wolfson tells you that McAmnesty would be their foremost challenger, better grab your wallet. McAmnesty talks tough about terror even as hugs the left on other key issues, especially surrendering America to ILLEGALS. A Hobson's Choice again... been there, done that with Presidente Jorge.

florida...
...yes, influential but not necessarily determinate. delegates are being won in caucus states by dr. paul. he also has the money to go the distance. this will be a brokered convention.

litmus test for McAmnesty
"Straight Talk" Express Positions:

1) Buddies up with far lefties Feingold and Teddy
the Swimmer... admires Shrillary
2) Opposed tax cuts, and Justice Alito as "too
conservative"
3) Sponsored the Scamnesty Bill and tried to kill
anti-ILLEGAL initiatives in Az., and calls 74%
of America "racist and xenophobic" for
opposing it
4) Favors neoCON agenda of staying in Iraq
forever, even as it costs us $7 billion per
month already
5) Is fighting currently to give your S.S. to
ILLEGALS (Jorge will sign it)

McAmnesty a conservative?! He is an open border, neoCON, RINO!!! Been there done that with Presidente Jorge! Another Hobson's Choice in the making as Reagan's party morphs ineluctably into RINOS.

half right
The description on the Republican side seems accurate. This is a topsy-turvy election in which anti-war voters are voting for the more pro-war McCain as are people concerned with the economy despite his lack of economic experience.

So Huckabee supports McCain by staying in the race and taking votes away from Romney. This makes sense because Huckabee and his supporters have different second choices.

But on the democratic side, Towery seems off in seeing some significance to Florida as to who wins the nomination. (Although only time will tell if Florida objects the DNC decision about their delegates).

Clinton had large leads in the country and in Tuesday primary states prior to Florida. And for the most part they have been steadily falling since before the South Carolina primary. The Florida primary seems to have done nothing to change the dynamic on the Democratic side. And where the Edwards voters go is more complicated than Towery suggests.

Edwards, despite running as a populist, was drawing support mostly from moderate white male democrats. And they have been as likely to vote for Obama as Clinton. In reality they could be more anti-Clinton than anti-black. Or they could half go one way and half the other.

McCain or Hillary
Does it really matter? They'll both reach across the aisle and get lots of things done. Translation - spend tons of your tax dollars while the government grows and our economy goes south.

There is only one candidate with a platform that will cut spending and reduce the size of government. America is not quite ready for that but they will be in 2012.

I'll be quietly working my precinct in Houston waiting for that day.

Unmaking the Presidency - About Time
The two corrupt parties have been rigging the election process for so long now that Americans have no idea why they are voting. We are constantly fed the lesser of two evils, and expected to tag along like good little sheep. The old technique of telling a lie over and over until it is accepted as true has been promoted by the DEM/GOP/MSM machines and we fall for it! That lie is that only "they" have the wisdom, knowledge, and experience to govern!

When will we ever wake up? The parties are interested solely in power, not the real needs of America. They are run by elites who subscribe to the internationalist agenda that looks to bring our nation into line with the rest of the world!

You don't think so? Notice in the debates the question about Sandra Day O'Connor. This woman espoused the idea that OUR CONSTITUTION should be interpreted in light of the laws of other nations!! Not one of the phonies on that stage said anything about her traitorous words, words by the way she still speaks as she travels around the nation talking to law school students!

If you are ready to actually do something different, the only way to get a different result, you must first think differently. You must reject the lies and propaganda and have the guts to change. I urge all to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG, and learn how the elites have scammed the American people to hold on to power and further their own agenda.

Check out the site, why not? What gain is there in giving even more power to the corrupt elites who have squandered our resources, weakened our military, mortgaged the future, and continue to sell out our sovereignty? Our birthright has been stolen! What do we intend to do about it? Thanks, Joe

Holding one's nose...
...and voting for RINO McCain is very easy to do for most rational voters, if the only alternative is Billary. It's not over 'til it's over.

Now the hard work becomes getting our party back from the poseurs in the GOP that cozy up to the Dems and the media hacks at every opportunity. True conservatives have never been nor are they now afraid of hard work, and neither are they intimidated by RINOs of any stripe.

for lilly
lilly writes: "If you are all about to throw up at the prospect of voting for John McCain, just think how we Democrats feel at the prospect of voting for Hillary Clinton."

This November, if it's Hillary vs. McCain, we may actually see some crossover voting in BOTH directions: Moderately conservative "Blue Dog" Dems in the Red States may vote for McCain. Liberal northeastern Repubs may vote for Hillary!

(Some of the "Blue Dog" Dems in Congress sound more like McCain than they sound like Hillary)

John McCain Shelter for Abused Conservat
John McCain has brought reality back into the Republican Party. Ronald Reagan was not a fanatic running on fear - he was a practical optimist. Regan's revolution was hijacked by abusive personalities hoping to subordinate others to their rants.
Ohg
http://thefiresidepost.com/2008/01/31/the-john-mccain-shelt er-for-abused-conservatives/

McCain Hillary train
Maybe we all ought to refuse to vote this Nov.

Wake up people
I think the Romney family should pull in their own money and save it for where they will be allowed to do good with the world. They are a wonderful example of what is right with this country and they have done us all proud. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for the hope they have given so many of us.

This republican party is proving to be religiously bigoted and is shoving a recycled candidate on us that was an embarrassment to us all last night. The more power he gets, the more beligerent he is becoming! That smile he put on last night is scary! I actually used to support him!

Do you really believe, after last night, that the Clintons are scared of this silly little man?
That is the big blanket that is being pulled over the heads of the moderate republicans at this moment by the RNC and the DNC.

Wake up people!

Condorcet Method
I'd like to see our primaries go to something more like a condorcet method, where we rank our preferences. I think McCain is most people's third or fourth choice, but the current plurality system doesn't take that into account. My way, candidates can stay in the race as long as they want, without being a spoiler for another candidate, instead of the current situation where you end up with your third choice because one candidate stayed in just a little too long. We could let the second place finisher have first shot at the vice presidency, if they wanted it.

McCain exit poll data from Florida
What struck me about the Florida vote was the exit polling dissecting the vote. McCain and Romney were fairly close except for the Latin/Hispanic vote...McCain was 54% to 14% for Romney..Why?, well, Amnesty is the apparent answer. And California has a lot more hispanics/latinos than Florida. That seems to be the real difference, and I still believe Romney's faith is an issue for some.

Does not bode well for the true conservative movement.

Libertarians vs. McCain
I'm not as concerned as some whether John McCain is a "real conservative" or not, since I'm more a libetarian than a "real conservative" myself. However, as a libertarian I have my own reasons not to support McCain. Not so much the immigration issue, which is not a huge issue for me, even though I'm not a purist enough libertarian to favor totally "open borders". But... McCain's "campaign finance reform," a direct attack on First Amendment-protected free oplitical speech, *is* a huge issue. And McCain's reported statement that he prefers "clean government" to upholding the First Amendment, is a virtual admission that he will be lying under oath if he takes the oath of office to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution". (Even aside from the fact that McCain-Feingold has utterly failed to create "clean government", even if that were moer important than the Constitution.)

Libertarians vs. McCain (continued)
From what I've heard, if McCain is a "real conservative" at all, his conservatism has little in common with the libertarian conservatism of Barry Goldwater or Ronadl Reagan. Rather his approach has been described as "national-greatness conservatism", which defines the role of government as setting great overarching goals for the whole society and then persuading-- or coercing-- everybody to pursue these goals. My idea of government's role is to make people free and safe to pursue their own goals and then stay out of the way.

And speaking of making people safe, I no longer believe (if I ever did) that McCain's gung-ho support of the Iraq war is helping keep America safe. (Even Gen. Petraeus could not confirm that fighting in Iraq is making Americans safer. Is there any other good reason to be there?) Maybe we shouldn't withdraw immediately, but I'm not in favor of staying in Iraq another hundred years "if necessary," as McCain has reportedly advocated. And I think pro-war conservatives are nuts if they believe stubborn support of the war is going to be a winning issue for McCain, or any other Republican, in the general election.

how liberal are the candidates?
There was a media report today that ranked Obama as the #1 most liberal Senator for 2007, with Shrillary coming in at #16.

http://youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/01/31/obama-ranked-most -liberal-senator-in-2007/

excerpt:
"The article said the two candidates were like “fraternal policy twins,” demonstrating only slight differences.

National Journal wrote that the two senators supported most measures to withdraw troops from Iraq and comprehensive immigration reform (read: Scamnesty), and that they voted similarly when it came to health care, education, energy and other issues."

***********************************************
A fascinating note... there is much debate about Juan McQuisling and how truly conservative he is.
This same analysis noted that he was absent too much during 2007 to be evaluated, but in 2006 he was about middle of the pack among all 100 senators in liberal posture voting! Straight talk?! Hmmm. You can check this out here:

http://nationaljournal.com/voteratings/sen/lib.htm

Our Future
"The question is how will he erase MY attitude from MY long, long memory. All of my candidates are out of the race so I have really not cared who gets the nomination since I don't consider any of the remaining three conservatives."

Ditto. More people than McCain have long memories and I will not vote for him either.

As Savage (above) says, If the people want Marxism, they will get it good and hard. But, oh, I wish my conservative, hard-working, good children and their little children did not have to share the fate of the doofuses voting for the Left.

There is no country left in the world unaffected by this nonsense and no country to rescue us from the clutches of the Nanny State when we have seen it at its worst. The same young men who don't have the balls to fight for our freedoms and to back off the Islamic Jihadists, will have to endure the loss of their freedoms and maybe lives by the Stalinists they elected.

I keep praying that God will stay His hand and protect our wonderful land of freedom and opportunity, but I guess when we allowed Him to be erased from our public life, we deserved to lose his protection.
