Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It may seem too early to be talking about whom the Republican Party might select as its vice-presidential nominee in 2008. After all, there's not yet even a clear view of whom the GOP presidential nominee will be.

Still, applying a little bit of prognostication to some maneuverings in Congress over the past week leads me to believe there is one name likely to be on any short list of potential Republican VPs: Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Start with the reasonable premise that with Texas' own President George Bush with just a 30 percent approval rating, even this reddest of red states can't be taken for granted next year. That new presumption changes everything, because the Republicans must win Texas if they have the slightest hope of keeping the White House.

Next consider current polls. They suggest that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton may well be the Democratic nominee for president. Up against the prospect of her, picture the rather dingy parade of ho-hum white men that peoples the stages at televised Republican debates these days. (Hey, nobody get upset -- I'm white and male, too.)

Quickly the case gets bolder for the Republicans to put someone like Hutchison front and center among potential running mates.

New clarity on the situation was forthcoming this week when Hutchison decided to vote against re-opening the Senate debate on an immigration bill that voters in red states entirely loathe.

InsiderAdvantage polls conducted over the last two weeks in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina showed a minimum of 55 percent of voters opposed to the Bush immigration bill (details at www.advantage.com).

Beyond just voting against reconsideration of the bill, Hutchison also offered what she termed the "No Amnesty Amendment." Her amendment proposed the requirement that all illegal immigrants leave the country within two years before being allowed to apply for special work visas to re-enter the country.

The amendment was defeated, which led Hutchison to remark that without it, there was no way to pretend the bill is anything shy of amnesty for illegal aliens.

The distaste for the immigration bill runs deep among both Republicans and Democrats in states we polled. Could that mean an articulate female Republican senator from a huge electoral state might offer some crossover appeal to independent voters in the presidential election, and maybe even to some scattered Democrats?

Make no mistake about it: With the White House witnessing support for the Iraq war crumbling among its own members in the Senate, and GOP senators being forced to fall on their swords for an immigration bill with little chance of passing the House of Representatives even if it gets out of the Senate, it's a long shot that any Republican can win the presidency in 2008.

Even states the GOP has been able to take for granted in recent presidential elections are now in doubt -- not necessarily for worry that they would go Democrat, but that conservative voters will be too demoralized to vote at all.

But a ray of hope shines over the gray horizon if the Republican Party finally -- out of desperation, if nothing else -- finally breaks out of its reflexive habit of offering only white males for vice president. Add a little flavor to the ticket, guys!

You don't reach the type of success Hutchison has enjoyed in a state like Texas without knowing how to take on big-time, powerful opponents.

After years of the stern and scowling Dick Cheney as vice president, presenting a softer side to the GOP ticket might be the remaining chance the party has to harvest a significant number of women voters, particularly against Hillary Clinton.

And if the Republicans actually won the election, Hutchison might bring to the vice presidency the refreshing notion that her office is a part of the executive branch of American government, instead of its own office of shadow government. Perhaps a Vice President Hutchison could help restore the belief that Republican officeholders aren't always secretive and uncompromising.

It's a refreshing thought, if nothing else.

Finally - The Best Candidate Comes Forth
As the only honest Democrat around, I have found it necessary to toss my hat into the ring and run for president of the U.S. The other candidates only offer elusive hints at how they plan to achieve their bold plans for making everyone’s lives better, whereas I will clearly tell you what I will do, and how I plan to do it.

First, there is the issue of poverty. Rather than drain the vaults of the rich slowly, my plan will simply eradicate all wealth in one fell swoop. The present form of currency shall be deemed to be worthless, and replaced with a new LD currency. Everyone will then be given $100 million dollars, thus making everyone fabulously and equally rich. Poverty and equality are instantly achieved.

Next, I will make it a crime to charge money for any item that is deemed to be a necessity of life. All food, housing, medicine, transportation, and so forth will be available in unlimited quantities, all free of charge. The greedy suppliers that currently charge money for such services will be put out of business, and people will no longer be charged for items that are rightfully theirs for the asking.

Then I will abolish forced labor. Too many people go to jobs that they dislike, or they are paid less than they feel they deserve to make. Since forcing people to work just to earn money to buy things that they desire is akin to slavery, all people will be paid the same weekly income regardless of whether or not they work. Those that opt to work can choose their profession, and they will be paid the same as their coworkers regardless of the differences in abilities. People will no longer be penalized just because they performed poorly in school or opted to forego formal education altogether.

I will then eliminate the overcrowding in prisons by releasing all inmates. The prisoners are all victims of society’s lack of adequate attention and guidance, so society should not be able to just lock them away and ignore the responsibility we have to rehabilitate criminals.

I will eliminate all war by disbanding our military and offering a formal surrender to any foe that has a beef with us. Peace is easy to obtain if one simply surrenders and refuses to put up a fight. By allowing the other nations of the world to deal with us in a totally weakened state, they will no longer feel intimidated, and as a result they will like us more.

Since most Americans do not like them anyway, I will eradicate the Bill of Rights. The protection afforded free speech only serves to allow people to criticize and offend others. The right to bear arms just allows people to arm themselves against the government that is trying to look out for their needs. The protection against illegal searches just allows criminals to hide their goods, and besides, if a person is innocent, then they have nothing to hide. And the idiotic 10th amendment takes away the federal governments ability to control the people from a central location: such inefficiency! Rights are only used by people to commit acts that others would prefer they didn’t do, so for the benefit of the majority, the Bill of Rights must go.

Finally, it has become apparent that political elections only serve to divide the people into opposing camps, Causing bickering that only harms them. Therefore, I shall eliminate the need for all future elections by remaining in office for life.

Examine my platform, and you will see that I am really no different than the other candidates, except that I am at least honest. So it is time to admit that the politicians that you elect no longer serve you, rather you now serve them. And if you are going to live your life under a thumb, it may as well be the thumb of an honest guy like me.

Hutchison is one of my senators
She sold her soul a long time ago. If you liked Bush, you'll love Kay-Bailey.

You've got my vote, LD
Excellent post, but you aren't quite vacuous enough to be a candidate. What, for instance, about "important" matters like multiculturalism?

Bet you he's right
Did anyone read Towery's book Powerchicks. I did. Ten yeasr ago he predicted Nancy Pelosi would some day be Speaker. I had never heard of her. This guy has some kind of crystal ball and I'm betting he's on to something. And he's right about her ditching the immigration bill.Everyone hates that piece of junk.

Loyal Democrat
Are you really Hitlary?

Kay Bailey Hutchison! Ummm?

I've always like Hutchison, but I never thought of her as VP.

Interesting! I'll have to give this some thought!

A sign....
It is a sign of the GOP's desperation that you people are already fantasizing about the VP spot.

Obviously, the right realizes that its days are numbered.

President Obama!

Liberty, you're a Texan? So am I!
And I'm here to tell the world that KBH is close to being a RINO and is not regarded very highly in her own state. Terrible choice.

for Ellen Waldstein
Ellen Waldstein writes: "It is a sign of the GOP's desperation that you people are already fantasizing about the VP spot."

Every GOP candidate is in a box over the Iraq War. According to the polls, most rank-and-file Republicans still support the war, so no GOP candidate can break with Bush on the war and still get the GOP nomination. But the general public (Democrats and Independents) has given up on the war, so the GOP candidate's support for Bush's war policy will doom him in the general election. Yet the issue cannot just be ignored either--polls show that Americans care more about Iraq than any other issue right now.

So, unable to come to grips with the main issue, a lot of folks are spending time on irrelevancies like VP candidates and so forth.

To me, there are only two issues that should matter in this campaign: What should the GOP say and do about Iraq? And what ticket has the best chance to win the swing states, such as Ohio?

All else is fluff, basically.

Problem is..........
You say, about Hutchison, 'You don't reach the type of success Hutchison has enjoyed in a state like Texas without knowing how to take on big-time, powerful opponents.'

Yes she sure does. She supports SSP, Trans Texas corridor, illegal immigration and more things that solid conservative people rail against. She sure knows how to take on powerful oppenents.

Her political pinncle has been reached. Let us help her into a quiet retirement.

Nice try though Matt for pushing an unpopular option. The way GOP wins in 2008 is to have the candidates support closing the border, shutting down NAFTA, dumping the tax code, seriously fixing the SS system and putting an ax to the big government tree but cutting it down to half of what it is now.

rather Cornyn than Kay
Sen Cornyn of Texas, although I doubt he'd want the job given the current crop of GOP Presidential offerings, would be a better choice than Sen Hutchison.
Sen Cornyn is a "law and order" guy from top to bottom wiht tons of experience and good conservative ideas of proper Federal governing. He is no RINO.

What you stand for...
is more important than if you happen to wear a dress or slacks.

GOP needs to sharpen their message and return to the conservative roots that brought the GOP back into power.

I would support a woman for CIC or VP but not because of her being a woman. Give us a woman candidate that lives and breathes the conservative air that used to fill the lungs of Thomas Jefferson and I will vote for her as often as I can.

Ellen Waldenstein
Obamba needs to take the pacifier out of his mouth first. Orbiting earth would be another good step.

Too close to Bush
She resembles him in too many ways. She was too close to voting for Amnesty - on the fence near as I can tell. Give me Hunter. He has been against Amnesty from the beginning.

Saw one of these commentators talking about the proposed legislation. Said it would cost ten billion. When are these idiots going to wake up and start acknowledging liabilities?! It will cost hundreds of billions! What world do they live in?

Lolo?
That's your response? Gee.... you people really are in bad shape.

President Obama!

Hunter-Palin 2008
The winning ticket, and more importantly the best team for these terrible times should be: Duncan Hunter and Sarah Palin.

Stupid Article
The only Republicans are demoralized is by listening to doom and gloom articles like this. Texas in question???? Hardly, against Hillary the socialist? She won't carry one southern state or Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, and bunch of others. She is the dream canidate for our side, the people hate her (47% of people say they will not vote for her under any circumstances).

I think that Michael Steele of Maryland would be a great VP choice for Fred Thompson. He is very conservative and smart. He would be a great choice. This country won't elect Hillary just because she is a woman, look at what happened in France. Come on folks, no worries, lets have some Reagan optimism.

No way
While Hutchison stood up against the immigration bill, it was because the people of Texas were on her about her previous stands on so-called immigration and other issues.

If she wants to be Governor, let her go.

I would support a woman for President or Vice President, but not Senator Hutchison.

Where is Margaret Thatcher when we need her, Jean Kirkpatrick?

Not Kay Hutchison.

Ellen Waldstein
A Feminazi denigrating a potential Woman VP! Typical Liberal Hypocrisy!
Obama is still wet behind the ears, A Communist and All Hat & No Cattle!
Go back to PuffingtonPoof and fantasize with sycophants!

Georgetwin...
If you're done with the childish name calling, care to address my statement?

The GOP has nothing to offer in 2008, so the VP spot is fun to dream about.

Why can't you just address that and not subject us all to your drivel?

Vote for LD!!!
Truth in advertising.

Viva la revolucion!!

Senatorus Remainus
I like Kay Hutchison, but I like her as a Senator. We need her intelligence and forthrightness in that Congressional body. If we have to have a woman as a running mate [something I'm not so sure of, though there are numerous well-qualified candidates], let it not be her.

Let Fred Thompson pick his own running mate.

By the way I41, Loyal Democrat is said to be a writer of satire. I don't buy that label. I think that LD is a Liberal in Conservative clothing, not funny, and relatively annoying. Despite my many suggestions, he/she/it still writes what I no longer read.

Laura Ingraham
For Vice President.

No to Kay
Kay will constantly be wetting her finger to see which way the wind it blowing. She lost my confidence years ago when I found out that she had either verbally or signed a pact with all of the other women in the Senate that they would never campaign against each other. That told me a whole lot without saying much of anything. As a member of the GOP she should have jumped at the opportunity to campaign against Boxer or Feinstein. Kay's okay, sort of, but she's no conservative.

Ellen Waldstein
The GOP has plenty to offer. Thompson & Romney for 2.

You came on here STRICTLY to denigrate conservatives!
You get a little back and you start crying!
Go change your Diaper!

LEAVE KAY BAILY ALONE!!
Do not even consider asking her to be the VP choice. Texas needs her more than Washington does. She can do more good in helping Texas keep the Liberal idiots out of control at the state and local level than she can do playing second fiddle to some Rep. President.

RR

Now, now! Ellen is right.
Ellen is correct that Obama would be the perfect leader for our nation. As per his voting history, he holds the record as being the most leftist leaning Senator that we have. Obama has even more courage than both Kennedy and Rodham when it comes to leading the United Stated into the wonderful world of socialism.

If we are to ever eliminate the concept of individual rights over the needs of the collective, prohibit private property ownership, provide for 100% control of the people by the government, we simply have to elect the most socialist candidate that is running.

So, join Ellen and I in proclaiming our total reliance on an all encompassing government. Freedom isn't worth the price if one is forced to make one's own decisions. Take care of us Obama, and we will gladly become your slaves!

Georgetwin: IF Waldstein claims the GOP

has nothing to offer, I submit that in fact the GOP has a great deal to offer that the lunatic liberals are not really happy about.

Now, if we want to investigate what the dumbocrats have to offer, why it just so happens that Loyal Democrat has just posted a little venture into the wonderful world of demo/socialism.

You've GOT to LOVE LD. I look forward to his satire... :-)

LD
"Take care of us Obama, and we will gladly become your slaves!"

err ... ahem ... that is perhaps NOT the best choice of words, methinks:)

You crazy people
You are so into your own right wing slogans that you can't even recognize that the columnist is giving you a hypothetical that could bring in people other than you nuts who live and breath by politics. I assure you that had this same group of bloggers had been ast it in 1980 you would have all been for John Conally and calling Reagan a RINO for having taken on Ford. It seems like Towery's columns are the only voice of strategic reason and you guys are caught up in what always causes us to fall apart--your own crazy opinions. The man told you that immigration by Bush would fall apart three wekks ago. Give the devil his due.
