Immigration: The Ellis Island Solution

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

A recent survey we conducted for a private group revealed that most Americans believe in an "Ellis Island" approach as a realistic way to deal with illegal aliens living in the United States. Policymakers might want to listen up.

It's now dawned on Republicans in the U.S. Senate that their embrace of President Bush's policy solution for illegal immigration has put those senators running for re-election next year in a precarious spot.

Too many people see the bill before Congress as a convoluted way of offering "amnesty for sale" to illegals in the United States. And the more senators in support of the bill study its details, the more they come to realize that it has so many requirements and penalties for immigrants that no one in a practical bent of mind should probably reject it.

Regardless, many Americans see two problems with the legislation. First, many resentfully recall that their own ancestors or relatives who immigrated here from places like Ireland in times of great economic hardship did so through one designated place -- Ellis Island in New York City. That portal into America served to process those immigrants and put them on the road to becoming part of the fabric of this nation.

Second, the proposed new federal legislation fails to provide an immigration process that's guaranteed against bureaucratic loopholes.

Plenty of Americans, particularly plenty of the Republican Party's conservative voting base, are skeptical that immigrants subject to the bill's provisions will ever do more than simply pay a series of ongoing fees to keep them in the country.

Our InsiderAdvantage survey showed that a majority of Americans believe the most practical approach is to establish certain processing locations. There, illegals already living here would "surrender" to authorities.

What would Americans expect from these replications of Ellis Island? First, what they wouldn't expect is that they would be glorified prisons. Instead, they would serve many overlapping and complementary purposes. They'd be holding and processing facilities of a sort, where everything from an immigrant's health to his or her possible criminal background could be checked.

What would these housed immigrants do there? Work on public projects -- building roads and schools, or providing manpower on the kinds of construction, transportation or public-private service projects that are gaining so much popularity in many states. Why the heck not? Continued...

I recall one of Dennis Prager's shows last year when a friend of his called to tell his story--he is a holocaust survivor. Today, a very well educated and respected US citizen. It was on one of the holiday's, I think Labor Day.

Dennis allowed his friend to 'witness' about how he survived, came here legally, and thrived. The story was heart wrenching to say the least. But his perfect ending made his audience choke with tears, as well as Dennis who was at a loss for words at the end of the program.

His friend choked with emotion said [paraphrasing] "If you are a citizen of The United States of America, you have truly won the lottery..." God bless this man, your grandfather, and many others who saw the power and glory of being a citizen of the United States.

It is a privilege to be a citizen, not a right, you have to work for the American Dream, yet our forefathers knew that we needed God given rights to protect us from evil. And it is still working, the Constitution has survived all attacks from the arrows of socialism--we have a duty to uphold our US Constitution and the laws of our land. That is all we are asking for is the security that the two men above talks about, that is all we are asking for is for our government to uphold and enforce the laws as they had been doing since the beginning.

If it had not been for my grandparents/great-great grandparents that left Poland and Germany (who came here through Ellis Island, I may have had to live under Communist rule until 1992. God bless the United States of America. Let's not destroy what we have, let's preserve it.

Wow Gabby, great story.
To DavidMac:

Again, if 30%(or whatever % the MSM is using today) are already in our jails for the exact things you are talking about, why has that NOT caused the others to return to their country? And of the thousands who were caught for the exact same crimes over and over and over again, why has our federal government let them go to wait for trial, and never show up--never to be found again, until they get arrested for the 10th time--in some other state. Your theory is a joke.

I am saying, no matter how many you put in jail, that is not enough deterrent for them to go back when they have family here, they get money and that is far more important than motivational fear. The risk is worth the wait.

Don't talk to me about common sense, use logic--point A-->B. Greed rules at the top and at the bottom. If the feds won't deport all of them, there is a reason, his name is George W. Bush.
