Gingrich on Iraq: Forget the "Establishment"

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Newt Gingrich this week spoke boldly on Iraq, which is the same way he spoke on just about everything when he was U.S. speaker of the House in the 1990s.

Gingrich, on December 12, said the American "establishment" has retreated into a burrow from which it peeps at the Iraq war, sees its own shadow and then disappears again.

Gingrich was hazy about naming names in this ill-defined "establishment," but he made it plain that it reminds him of key, hesitant political actors in the years leading up to World War II.

"They want to believe Chamberlain is right, Churchill is wrong, and that Hitler doesn't exist," he said, comparing efforts to appease Nazi Germany to current efforts to embrace the Iraq Study Group's findings as a vehicle by which to leave that troubled country.

Gingrich pointed to recent public statements made by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in which he alluded to a world without the United States and openly cheered the prospect of the end of Israel. Iran, of course, has for years now duped the international community as it tried to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons. Iran is also believed to be supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq.

"The recommendation [the study group] made to President Bush is, let's talk to [the Iranian leadership]," said Gingrich. "Why? What possible conversation could we have?"

Gingrich and others are coming to see the emergence of aggressive, defiant regimes, coupled with an ungovernable spread of terrorism, as dual threats that make for a holistic threat against world peace and stability.

Gingrich believes President George W. Bush must use his likely upcoming address on Iraq's future to link America's effort there to a wider context of dealing with these interrelated threats as they grow more serious each day.

How would Gingrich act now? He says he would pitch a sort of hybrid of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and Harry Truman's Marshall Plan. It would provide economic resources in Iraq to create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. Gingrich proposes giving "every able-bodied person" a job to do and a wage to receive. Money and personal security, he says, bring stability. For all the talk of religious strife, Iraqis want food to eat and safety on their streets as much as anyone.

Gingrich says the region should then be flooded with goods that would first be given to and later, ultimately, bought by Iraqis, with money from their new paychecks.

This perspective is a historical one. No surprise there. Gingrich has a vast knowledge of history. Part of that history is the disdain many conservatives had -- or still have -- for FDR's New Deal, with its many public-works programs designed less to accomplish public tasks than to put money in people's pockets. But Gingrich believes a similar plan in Iraq would be a critical adjunct to purely military efforts.

Gingrich became a critic of the handling of the war in 2003, when his basic message was that act one of the military venture, the invasion of Iraq, had gone swimmingly, but that act two had never been written, much less staged.

This Sunday, the former speaker will return to the same television venue where he voiced those concerns three years ago, NBC's "Meet The Press." He'll likely revisit those previous comments with host Tim Russert.

Nobody's saying Gingrich's ideas are flawless. Certainly not me, and not even him. Yet it's becoming abundantly clear that President Bush intends to stay in Iraq for a while. Further, he may authorize a significant number of additional troops to go there.

If so, the Gingrich Plan could become not only possible, but unavoidable. After all, the fiercest criticism of Bush among endless criticism has been the lack of "a plan." Gingrich offers one -- beyond just bombs and bullets.

If Bush's promised change of direction isolates Iraq as the only world danger, and if he offers only more of the same in fighting that conflict, then Gingrich believes America might as well pull out its troops and quit.

If it comes to that, he says, our nation's weakened "establishment" will have lost its resolve to address the bigger, uglier picture. That would be the one that could threaten our very existence in the years to come.

Just what color is the sky in your world?

As usual, you never actually challenge the substance of the article. You just lob a couple of insults.

For the record, Gingrich was a highly successful Speaker.

And if you can't see the parallels between WWII and the WOT, you don't know anything about history, the Islamofacists, or both.

Defend Moderate Muslims

The war must continue until Moderate Muslims can identify their leaders and bring Islam into the world community. This should be the theme of the current conflict rather than the War on Terror which leaves Terror undefined thus leaving us without a clearly identified enemy.

The current war is with Radical Islamists who kill innocent civilians and fight against the devedlopment of representative government. Why our goivernment has not identified the numerous regiems and areas where they exist is a mystery to me.

Gingrich has good ideas, this sounds like one. It is really unfortunate such a clear thinker is such a public lightning rod. I sincerely wish he could develop a broad range of public support.

The War on Terror should be renamed the War for Moderate Islam or if a negative connotation is required War against Radical Islam.

Gingrich
You can see by the posts here that the Liberal Democrats are deathly afraid of a possible Gingrich candidacy. Gingrich was an extremely forceful and successful leader, the libs fear him because of his intelligence and speaking ability. The press has a hard time countering his views so they focus on his personal life, too bad they didn't do that with Sick Willie.

Drive-By-Kim is
back to her old ways... drive by, drop a load of guano, then disappear.

Wolfpat is correct. Kimberly adds nothing to the debate, just typical liberal slander of the messenger.

And Gen MacArthur makes a great point. Can you just imagine the line at the airport of all the liberals leaving the country if Newt were elected president? (Well.. at least they'd SAY they were going to leave!)

Sounds like a plan to me!

General, Primus
Guys, don't you think it funny that whenever it has been brought up--the fact that Clinton lied, had an affair-(whether it affected his leadership ability or not, still an abuse of power in my opinion)Kimberly and her ilk always say his "sex life" shouldn't matter and here she is slinging about Gingrich's divorce record. F-ing amazing how she just hates the facts and "drops her guano" everywhere.

You guys made some great points, keep it up! And, for the record I think Newt will bring forward more great stuff come 2008...and if he does run,he will give the libs something to be afraid of. Because, when he talks, people listen!!

Drive-by Kim
I have been a reade of TH for a couple of years, have yet to read anything from Kim other than a host of unsubstanciated insults. Any conservative is wrong, but no information ever given to back up her claims. Hell, anyone can throw insults without thinking too much. Maybe she wants to avoid straining her brain. From what I've read, that wouldn't take much. Her claim that Newt was a failed Speaker is so obviousy wrong that it hardly deserves comment.

Gingrich Will Be A Political Force
Newt Gingrich will be a political force in the years ahead because he is clear thinking and articulates well the choices ahead for the nation. Whether Gingrich is such a force as a candidate or as the resident theoretician for a resurgent Republican Party, we shall see. In any event, now with respect to Iraq, Gingrich has spoken boldly and, in my view, correctly.

Thinking
Original thought is a rare commodity. So rare in fact some on this board have never had one. They open their mouths and out pours the MSM bilge, word for word. Just a rephrase would add variety and interest to the plate of tripe being served.
As most of you know, I am an advocate of more war not less, but it appears that is not the direction we are headed--I am an echo in an empty attic. Analyzing Newt's proposal--putting people to work gives them far less time to commit terrorist acts and removes some of the incentive. Sectarian war among the Sunnis and Shia may be significantly reduced , if people feel there is a future in their lives. Who will pay for it? That is not a long term issue; the Iraqis have a future filled with oil revenues and there will be pay back, if we can stabilize the country. Most of our Warriors in Iraq that interface daily with the Iraqi people have developed friends there, our soldiers like and trust the vast majority of the ordinary man on the street. Our soldiers are convinced the country can be saved and when given the chance to speak; they are proud of what they have done and continue to do. The Democrats have been beating the h*ll out of the bushes trying to get a ground swell of discontented soldiers to come forth and deny their mission in Iraq. It has not happened--they have found a few but very few. In fact, generally speaking--our soldiers have far more hatred for the MSM and Democrats than they do their circumstance in Iraq. BTW our Warriors are far more qualified to make judgements on Iraq than are the politicians sitting on their fat cozy as*es in Washington. Our soldiers know Al Quaida is Sunni and Hezbollah and the Mahdi militia are Shia; if only our Intell Committee had some of that knowledge.

go newt
Newt talks the good talk but what we need is action and we need it now. Waiting for a new president who can make changes for the better is still two years down the road. The threat to our very existence is not years down the road but today. Time is a luxury we are running out of. To Kimberly and merry go little boy, read what you posted and then I hope you see how utterly stupid you sound and please go educate yourselves and when you do the personal attacks, you lose ALL if any credibility you may have.

Warrior
Sir,
What you say is absolutely true. Though I am not serving now- I have many friends who are still...They do believe in what they have done and are doing and have no reservations about finishing what was started. As I have stated before: I have been to Landstuhl and seen the injured troops. The first words I hear are that they want to go back to finish what they strated...and I am thankful that the Army is beginning to see that just because one is an amputee, it doesn't make them unfit for duty. It is the thing that gives those soldiers a sense of normalcy, to continue on and be accepted by their military peers. That is, as opposed to sitting in a VA hospital wasting away when thay can still make a difference.
There was nothing like running the Army ten-miler and seeing the MPIA(missing parts in action)amputees team kicking my a**! We need to go balls to the wall and make our mark. Get it done!

Newt Gingrich
Newt is a refreshing change from the RINO/Rat pack of so-called leaders, mostly losers & posers. He's very good in communicating mostly Conservative principles and hits the nail on the head with at least one of the points he makes. Jobs for every Iraqi that is willing should have been the 1st or one of the first logical things done after the fall of Baghdad. Those unwilling to work, would be easy to identify. This was not done and was a huge mistake by a combination of idiot US guvernment bureaucrats mostly lead from DC. Take a look at the Kurds, prosperity based on economic freedom is needed as the very foundation of security and everything else!

in a party desperate for real leadership
Newt may make a comeback.

As far as I can tell, the Republican party ticket is light with the exceptions of mccain and guliani, both of which have major problems with their philosophies and the conservitive base. Mccain is obviously bought out by the same eleits that run the Bush cabel, his stance on immigration show this clearly. Guliani is a typical new york liberal in many repects, his stance on the second ammendment shows this clearly. his respect earned by the job he did after 9/11 may buy him a pass on that.
The only problem Newt has is the perception of disloyalty he got from divorcing his wife while she was undergoing cancer treatment.

Other then that, he realy is the intellectual heavywieght of the three.

Gingrich
I keep seeing people throw bombs at Gingrich over his past personal life. It seems to me that most (not all) of the GOP's leading 2008 candidates in the polls have had either messy divorces or, in one instance, a mistress and a wife publicly battling while still in a Mayoral job. (Romney appears not to be one, but no one knows him and no one has yet to look at his little Olympic scandals). Give me a break.Everyone has a past. Gingrich is an egg head, but the fact that he is the longest serving active teacher at the War College (for those who even know what that is), tells me that his thoughts are pretty relevant. As to his ideas being liberal--wait a minute. I'd rather spend money on a real answer than spend it on 20 more years of presence in Iraq. Face it guys, Bush and the entire GOP establishment haven't had a unique idea in years. I agree with Vaquero, I'm tired of the RINO/Rat Pack too!

Some good points raised
Gingrich's points are well-worth noting.

While it could be said that Truman successfully conducted the tail-end of WW2, perhaps it is due to being inherited from FDR; certainly Truman proved useless in Korea (by firing McArthur after the able general had led troops to the Yalu--had he allowed McArthur to finish the job, there would be NO North Korean regime post-1953). And, it was compounded by almost every other post-WW2 president--as they never stayed the course to complete, decisive victory.

Are you kidding me?
Give them jobs and free stuff? And just how is that supposed to do the one thing that needs to be done, namely winning the damned war?! If Newt weren't so busy basking in the pats on the back that so many people are giving him, maybe he would realize that the whole rebuilding the infrastructure thing is being tried now. The only thing is that we have diverted our attention from destroying our enemies to doing public works. Unleash hell on our enemies, destroy them, and break their will to continue in the war effort...then worry about rebuilding the infrastructure, etc., etc.

And how does giving away free stuff do anything about the sectarian violence in Iraq? I doubt that givng them free goods is going to make the Shia and Sunni factions stop their feuding and join together in a rousing chorus of Kumbaya! These people have been at each others throats since Mohammed died...does Mr. Newt actually believe that giving them make work jobs is going to heal the strife between them?

I usually listen to Newt and get some useful ideas from him, but this ain't one of those times. Maybe his admiration for Hillary Clinton has started to lead him to believe in some Big Government ideas. Because this idea is more liberal Democrat than even remotely conservative.

It's interesting
the Conservatives are considering a jobs program for Iraq. The irony is delicous. I'll bet FDR is spinning in his grave!

Not giving jobs but
Flagwaver, first things first...the failure to provide security for the large number of emancipated Iraqs'(25 Million people), that could've been rebuilding "their" country for the last 4 years, may arguably be the KEY FAILURE in this imperfect and unique effort to shortcut a WORLD WAR....and as usual the ideas generated predominately by Big Government bureaucrats just DO NOT work.
IMO, Pres Bush has done the right thing as he appears to be listening to other ideas, very similar to what A. Lincoln had to do to find a win in the Civil War. We can only hope that the West will prevail and God will bless us with Leaders that are thinkers as well as doers.

Reasons to like Gingrich

.....Matt...

1. The Dem/Libs hate and fear him ...the MSM lionizes McCain and Guiliani but the mere mention of Newt's name has them reaching for their garlic and anti-Dracula crosses ...

2. Newt has a Phd in history which gives him an accurate perspective of historical events which is sadly lacking in most politicians ...witness the recent Democratic chair of the Intelligence comittee who doesn't even know the difference between Sunnis and Shia ...

3. He is a proven leader who can communicate his ideas to the public and make sound policy decisions ...he was made into a lightening rod and crucified on the altar of Bill Clinton by a sycophantic press but the worst his critics can say about him is that he has been divorced ...

postscript: Gingrich has said publicly that we can't afford to wait until 2008 to implement his ideas ...his purpose is to influence the President to act now .....COLOSSUS

Flagwaver writes
the best commentary on Newt's idea. How much of our treasure has been lost, stolen, misappropriated, embezzeled already over there? It's been widely reported to have happened. And Newt wants to do it some more? No, I don't think so.
I am all for Newt throwing his hat in the political ring whenever. He is a valuable contributor. But this time I think his hat flew into the pond and now his head is all wet.
The Iraqi's are quite capable of managing their own affairs if we can secure the peace. They have a longer history of it (history, Newt) than we do, in fact. And here is where Flagwaver and many others including McCain, for a change, have their eye on the ball; have the military bust some chops until it stops over there.

I suspect
many of us live in "glass houses" so the selective personal attacks on Gingrich add little to any solution. Americans in general still don't get the 9-11-01 attack in NY as a grave threat to our nation. Gingrich get's it and has the experience, intelligence, and guts to deal with it...if we put America first over partisan issues, we can raise a leader, not a "decider".

Flagwaver
The way it works is the black market.

In Germany after the end of the war, there was a thriving black market between the G.I.s and the German civilians.

In Korea, same thing.

That's what jump-started their economies. Sure, it's against military regulations, but I served a tour in the ROK (1965 - 1966) and the market was still working. The lifers from the old "brown-shoe" Army who served as occupation troops in Germany told me the same thing.

We poured money and materiel into the economies of both countries, and Japan as well. All three are thriving DEMOCRATIC countries now.

Drive-bye-Kim..On relationships..
Newt was a great speaker, Rudy a great mayor, Rush-the best at what he does. All less successful in relationships. Kimberly is good at drive bye sniping. It's rare to be 'multi-facited' great. Kimberly..take this..You're probably headaphobic. How do you like being discredited, Kimmy style? Swallow that!

Kimbertard
Spoken like a true libtard coward. You a-clowns were screaming quagmire from day one. Why should anyone think your opinion is worth anything when you resort to lying?

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Another Joke!

Oh, this is rich.

So the Colonel on this site is advocating Fascism in Iraq and Newt Gingrich is advocating Socialism!!!

You people are so lost, aren't you?

Of course economic insecurity causes violence and disorder. Liberals have been saying that for decades while you people prattle on about "moral values" and the how perfect the TOTALLY amoral, purely profit-driven corporate system is.

With every day you talk about "victory" in Iraq, you are making people understand why it is that Conservatives should not govern. As David Brooks said, you have no theory of governance. With your anarcho-capitalism and your lying churches, you're parasites on a system that tries to foster cooperation and compassion. Parasites.

And now we see in Iraq what happens when parasites try to run a country. It falls apart.

You're hopeless.

And now the Generals have admitted that there is no hope in Iraq and decided to pull our troops back to their big bases so they don't "lose". Yeah, that's called "retreat".

Nice job, idiots.

Carry Message Trouble
Since the 60's I have been a Conservative & vote Republican. I give them money, interest all I come in contact with about conservative thought. I carry the message, and to quote Rush "Carry the Water for the Republicans." I do not see a 3rd party as ever being realistic. It grips me to instant combustion is that the Republicans never carry, or own the message. The other side is permitted to say Republicans lie, are dishonest, stupid, are extreme right wing, are stealing from the poor, are cutting programs, hate the poor and are cheating them out of their money, giving to the rich buddies, control the price of oil for Bushes’ friends. NOT ONE REPUBLICAN EVER REBUTS OR EXPLAINS WHAT IS THE TRUTH TO ANYONE. JOE BLOW THINKS, IF YOU LET IT STAND ,,, IT MUST BE TRUE!

I remember when Newt had the house, and was lowering the yearly cost growth of some medical program from 10% to 6%. The dems and media went ballistic that the GOP was "Cutting the Medical Program of the old and the Poor." Newt and Dick Army both said "When people see the truth they will know that we are not cutting." Never understanding that Joe Blow doesn’t understand or have a zero line for what is the truth. When the dems side say's it's a cut, it is a cut in their mind. If your going to play football in the mud, well dad-gum-it don't be afread to get dirty. It's the nature of the game. If you "High Minded" to get dirty, go home and let one of us that are not afread to roll with a peg to eat ham later, get in the game!

Today, since 2001 the dem's have said that we are loosing in Iraq, it is a disaster, Bush lied, and he is incompetent. All of which is not true, but not one Republican ever stands up and says that is extreme and redefines where the center is and what is true.

Communications is a constant fight and the definition of center is fluid to be defined EVERY DAY AND SOMETIMES EVERY HOUR. IF THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT LEARN TO OWN THE MESSAGE EVERY MINUTE, WE ARE DOOMED TO WATCH OUR MONEY AND IDEAS GO DOWN THE CRAPPER.

It is as if every time the Republicans get the ball, they stand still smile, wave, love the ball, point to where the goal is and do nothing to get it down the field. My gosh, they let the new Speaker of the house Harry Reed walk down field with a smile, even though he has been cited for wrongfully accepting Boxing tickets, a stinky land deal. The Republicans kiss their feet. When are they going to get off their dead rears and become politicians? There is no hope until they join and play the game!!!!!!!!

The Sloppy Seconds Presidency
This is exactly what I expected would happen. The itch that won't go away no matter how much you scratch it is back. I simply cannot get over the cojones enormes of this guy .IMHO, he has a lot of nerve positioning himself as a conservative since he has been divorced twice - both times precipitated by HIS OWN ADULTERY AND DESERTION of both his ex-wives. His current wife, who he cheated on his second wife with for six years WHILE SPEAKER, is younger than one of his own daughters. Is this the role model we want to show the world for the portrayal of American values? Stop insulting our intelligence, Newt. The USA has never had a twice-divorced President and there is already enough dysfunction in this country for us to start now. It takes more than just "bright ideas" to be a leader. CHARACTER MATTERS.
BTW, I thought very highly of him during the '90s. I also live in the Northeast where it is not easy to be conservative.
Newt's "baggage" is not part of his past. It all occurred during his tenure in Congress - a notorious violation of public trust.
If the Clinton Administration is the White Trash Presidency, then the Gingrich Administration will be known as Sloppy Seconds.

my 2 cents
ANY mention of Newt Gingrich and Dems go ballistic. The lovely and talented merry-go-boy especially seems to be foaming at the mouth.

Must be a reason - if they are THAT afraid of him there MUST BE A REASON.

Q: How many of you out there would love to see a debate between Newt Gingrich and Barack Obama? (AKA BO)

btw - does anyone remember just after the 2004 election when there were so many dd's (disappointed dems) threatening to move to Canada?

1 more thing
mamaditto - You made some serious accusations.

Proof, please.

dlaw ...
With your anarcho-capitalism and your lying churches, you're parasites on a system that tries to foster cooperation and compassion. Parasites.

This nation has been doing pretty well for a couple hundred years. Of course people of your ilk weren't around at the start. Those who haven't or aren't willing to sacrifice anything FOR this country are the parasites!

Att'n Uncle Max
All the info in my note has been in the public domain for a long time. Please tell me what exactly concerns you?

Like I said, I am a conservative living in a blue state. I used to idolize Newt. When I found out about his lenghty affair with a congressional aide during his tenure as Speaker all his brilliance and tenacity for which I so admired him suddenly did not matter anymore.

Clinton and Newt
I hear that Clinton and Newt dry hump the NSA's ECHELON servers in their free time.

Farmers Claiming Subsidies Parasidic!!
Hate to break it to you farmer's wife, but for the first hundred fifty years the conserv's ruled. Then some trough sucking piglets whined and cried "we we we", and forgot about self-sufficiency. Now the biggest parasites are the 50% of farmer's who claim subsidies. The other hard working farmers who don't claim subsidies make this country great. Let the free-market rule, and we'll all be further ahead. Which 50% are you? Or are you a pretend hobby farmer. End subsidies!!!

Third Parties
I'm afraid I'll have to disagree on your contention that there will be no third party success in the US. Right now politics is like TV Wrestling writ large. In TV Wrestling the "matches" are fixed and everyone knows it. But people who enjoy it (NOTE- not me) tune in to see the yelling and the soap opera.
Our politicians have taken note. They yell and bicker over minute philosophical points so that the casual observer forgets that they aren't accomplishing much. If you want to figure out a politician's view on any subjuct, just look at his opposite across the isle. It will be diametrically opposed to that guy's view, whatever that is. If one politician changes his views, his opposite will reverse course just as vehemently. This is not governance, it is a minstrel show.
I think we're going to need a third party to give rise to more moderate views, both right and left that make sense on their face.

mamaditto
What years to what years? I am not familiar with the particulars of Mr. Gingrich's personal life and I would like to know particularly WHEN he did WHAT you are accusing him of, which you say is in the public domain.

BTW - I too am a conservative living in a blue state in the northeast.

Warrior Writes
Right on Warrior. I think it's time to direct the war at the Islam world, not the "Terrorist, nor the Radicals". During previous wars I & II, in particular, we went to war against the entire population of the countries we were fighting.
When some people have something to lose, they won't be too quick to blow themselves up. So some form of Marshal plan should work.

Mammaditto, unfortunately, is right
I was a member of GOPAC in the 80s, so Newt's ideas and willingness to go on offense was a breath of fresh air. However,
1. His behavior has been repugnant. Mamaditto is right.
2. He, like Jack Kemp, is too little concerned about spending and entitlements.
3. We need a Pence or a Coburn to lead the Republican Party.
