Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I wrote last week that our InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion survey showed that controversial Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney would likely lose her primary runoff election against former county commissioner Hank Johnson in Georgia's 4th District.

McKinney lost handily. Beyond that, her final hours before eventually conceding defeat made for the most underreported and bizarre story of a political exit I've ever seen in my years of participating in or analyzing political races around the country.

I had agreed to join the anchor desk at Atlanta's NBC-TV affiliate to provide analysis for that day's elections. As the night wore on, it became clear that McKinney would lose in a landslide, just as our poll had suggested.

As the regular broadcast wrapped up at 11:30 p.m., McKinney had yet to appear publicly to concede the election, as custom dictates. Beyond that, earlier in the day her bodyguards had scuffled with a cameraman from the same NBC affiliate.

We signed off, and the station switched to the network feed of NBC's "Tonight Show." That's when the bizarre ending of Cynthia McKinney started to unfold.

During the day, McKinney had been accompanied everywhere by a phalanx of bodyguards. Reportedly, they held no official law-enforcement positions. Also, some of them reportedly were affiliated with political groups or positions described by some as extremist.

It remains to be seen if their political leanings and affiliations are so. Regardless, McKinney crisscrossed the district throughout the day in a white Hummer, all the while refusing to allow the approach of the public or media, the lot of whom was fended off by these menacing guards.

Now let's jump ahead to that night, and the unfunniest "Tonight Show" I've ever sat through. Not because host Jay Leno was out of form, but because back in the studio we could also see on the monitors a commotion in the ballroom of McKinney headquarters. I pointed out to anchors Brenda Wood and Ted Hall that something odd was happening.

Then we heard shouting in the newsroom itself, from where station officials were phoning 911. A station cameraman allegedly had been struck at McKinney headquarters by one of her bodyguards, and then chased to a nearby satellite news truck, where he and others locked the doors and were surrounded.

The original raw video footage fed into the station showed McKinney entering her headquarters like a hip-hop artist, with bodyguards shouting at a clearly agitated crowd.

As of this writing, police were still investigating the incident. The McKinney bodyguard believed to be involved in the altercation -- a man apparently nationally known for his martial arts skill, as well as for his involvement in similar past incidents -- claimed that the cameraman had thrown his camera at him, the bodyguard. Also, there were claims McKinney's mother was struck by media equipment.

Anyone familiar with the cost of this kind of camera equipment has to doubt it would be a weapon of choice.

The video showed fists flying and the cameraman being knocked to the ground.

It got stranger still. Finally McKinney appeared before reporters. She summoned her supporters to the stage, separating them from the press. Next was heard a song by the artist Pink that was directed at a clearly demonized President Bush. McKinney then commenced a rambling speech that, among other things, implied fraud in the electronic voting that day. She also thanked or expressed support for all sorts of groups and even foreign nations, including Venezuela, an avowed enemy of the United States.

At least that's what we thought we heard.

Media reports have since surfaced of anti-Semitic remarks hurled at media by McKinney supporters as they left the headquarters. One reporter for a major national newspaper claimed she was threatened with being "thrown down the stairs or the escalator" if she didn't vacate an area near where McKinney was holed up.

Every corner of that headquarters emanated fear and hatred.

I have to make this clear. In last week's column, I recalled the bright and personable Cynthia McKinney I knew back in 1990. And it's not my place to summarily judge her in 2006.

But I now know why our polling of this primary runoff election showed so accurately that McKinney would be trounced. Clearly, this heavily African-American district she represented no longer wanted to be associated with her brand of representation.

I'm glad
that Matt finally referred to his sympathetic recollections of a younger Cynthia McKinney. I was afraid that he was going to leave that part out of this article.

The Cynthia McKinney I have known via her public shenanigans is a pure nut. She is a contemptible, hateful, race mongering disgrace to the people who voted for her, to the Congress, with a special nod to the Congressional Black Caucus, and to America.

Her affiliation with the New Black Panthers clearly shows how demented she is. That racist, retarded bunch of thugs should never have been anywhere near an elected representitive. That she chose to surround herself with these lunatics, whose combined IQ is still single digit, shows how far American politics has degenerated.

I sincerely hope that her bodyguards are indicted, prosecuted, and put into the cages. I am curious about what comments, if any, members of the Black Caucus will make regarding this sordid affair. Now, if we could just get rid of Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters.

As far as McKinney is concerned, I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

Skip: you said it beautifully.

What fun!
To think, some folks out there are wasting their time trying to watch Tom Cruise jump up on a sofa!

Tee hee!

:-)

Ditto that

Kudos! Well said!

The above
I though I had something novel to say--that is, until I read the comments immediately above.

That just says it all. And as a writer, I really hate to admit it.

--Moss Posner, M.D.

For me the headline says it all
The UNTOLD story. If this had happened at DeLay's (or, for that matter, Lieberman's) we certainly wouldn't have to log onto TH to learn of it.

Poor Cynthia
In 1990 when I first saw Cynthia; I had 2 impressions. Cynthia was as nutty as a fruit cake and her father was in a higher orbit of nuttiness than she was. My entire career in Atlanta was marred by her being a Representative. That was only marginally over shadowed by the happenings of the day O J Simpson was acquitted. I was astounded when all the Black teachers in the school (where I taught) left their classes to rush into the halls and cheer when the verdict was announced. One other point to report: I was unofficially (not on paper) reprimanded on 5 different occasions for refusing to stand in a school assembly when the "Black National Anthem" was sung. Smiles deceive, action defines.

Ohmigosh!
Cynthia M......Cindy S.......two demented women, both potentially dangerous.
I admit, Cynthia can be looked at as pretty, neat, maybe even in fashion, but the smiling, wild-eyed look portends madness, not just shuck 'n' jive. She got along with that for quite a while, didn't she? As did others.

Coming to a Shootout Armed with a Knife.
Congresswoman McKinney has come out with accusations that the voting process (the machines) is flawed and perhaps even dishonest.

Unfortunately for her, Mr. Johnson is also black, which effectively disarms her from playing her favorite - the race card.

She can't win her war without her ammo.

Oh, Yeah
Nothing's ever McKinney's fault. She's always a victim of circumstance and happenstance.

That stupid reporter probably hurled his face onto the bodyguard's fist. How dare he?!

Cynthia McKinney
If Ms. McKinney had just said "I'm sorry" and meant it, then people may still be listening to her. But to act as if she was the victim is testimony to her view that people can be manipulated, because they are too stupid to sift through the facts. The "laws" governing respect are simple - if you behave as she did, people will not respect you or listen to you. They will also not vote for you.

Cynthia McKinney
As of 2005, I was gerrymandered out of the Fourth district, and into the Fifth. John Lewis. He's probably more liberal/socialist than McKinney, but he's smart enough to keep it within the bounds of reason.

McKinney's antics would have gotten any law abiding citizen in her district locked up, but she plays the race card and skates. As a resident of the State of Georgia, I feel a great relief that she's gone. She's gotta be a real nut case for Nancy Pelosi to put her down by stripping her seniority in the House, and the Congressional Black Caucus to tell her to shut up.

Adios, Cynthia ( and good riddance)

Bill Mangum
Decatur, GA

As a Gerogia District 4 resident . . .
. . . I made sure to cast my vote (in my second ever primary election, my first time was to vote for Denise Majette) and I watched this unfold with rapt attention.

I noted two things during the broadcast of her "concession speech":
1 ) A dearth of white faces. Cynthia doesn't discriminate against whites, now, does she? I mean, after all, that would be "racist" and she's the victim -not- the perpetrator of racism; and

2 ) Bodyguards. Other politicians have "security". McKinney has "bodyguards". Goons is more like it.

Takin' out the trash.
Trash comes in all colors, it seems. And sometimes you just have to take out the trash.

I know nothing about the fella
who won the election there, but is this a sign that some people are starting to get at least something? Something about how ideas are as important as color?

Who knows, and maybe in my ignorance regarding the other fella I am just dreaming...

Gore viral infection
Her odious comments on stolen elections remind me of the disgraceful behavior of Al Gore in 2000 and how he has inspired Obrador in the current Mexican election debacle.

Cynthia McKinney big timed it around little people like Capitol security officers and the rest of us. Now she has deservedly been punked from the bit time. Let's hope permanently.

Adieu!

So long
Cynthia!! Don't let the door hit that ample behind.

the end results
Cynthia Mckinney is the logical conclusion of modern liberalism. She is the poster girl for where that degenerate and irrational philosophy leads to. She is the love child of Hillary Clinton and Bozo the Clown. I hate to see her go.

oops:
Sorry for posting twice. I thought my previous post got lost in the ether.

I saw the video on Fox News
...on Chris Wallace's show. Not only was one of her "bodyguards" yelling at a Fox News producer who was Jewish (saying, "Go put your yarmulke on and go celebrate" Johnson's win), but they were also throwing epithets like "cracker" at the news crews, and calling the liberal socialist Johnson an "Uncle Tom." McKinney is a disgrace, and any good thing she's ever done means little after her disgraceful display. The race card and the class-warfare card was played equally. When she loses, it's never her fault.

Now there's a way
to get everyone to forget that you assaulted a police officer: have your bodyguard assault a cameraman.

DocNoleCat, you've got it right. If a conservative had done this, it would have been everywhere.

Re: me
It seems that my last post was pulled from the site, so I'll say it again:

Please go back to your sad little, homophobic, whites only world. I suppose that calling me "Fagwaiver" was your lame attempt at witty reparte; unfortunately it is just another sign of your inability to make a real argument. If you choose to continue with the gay slurs and calling people 'Typical N words", then maybe you should check out the Kos or HuffPo where you will fit right in; they can't argue points either!

Life is much too short, and time too valuable to be wasted on the ignorant likes of you, so unless you actually have something to say that is at least a little substantive, please do not address me.

Flag: Good post
I saw that pathetic moron's post, too, and almost ripped him a new one, but figured you could put up your own defense first and more effectively than I. I didn't want to steal your thunder.

You know what really makes his idiocy even more offensive? I think he's confusing you and Celt, which means he can't even keep his hates and prejudices straight in his own feeble mind ( for those who don't know, Celt is a Trans-Gendered Republican, in his own words).

My own take: the poster who labels him/herself "me" is a subhuman, moronic, pathetic lurker, who is apparently trying to hide his own prejudices and homophobia within a veneer of respectability, with the intellectual prowess of an amoeba, probably peeping into the windows of his neighbors' teenage daughters, and considers books a source of toilet paper.

But, then, I may be wrong.

Nah. I doubt it.

McCrazy!!
Hannity and Colmes showed the melee that went on with the press and McCrazie's "bodyguards," who turned out to be black panthers. The "bodyguard" appeared on the show, with his posse, to justify his anti-semitic/anti-white rantings/violence, blah, blah, blah. He was dressed in his panther garb as were HIS "bodyguards." (these guys were very scary) I wonder why they didnt wear the uniforms while "protecting" McCrazy?? She seems to be her father's perfect puppet. Very child-like, with that wide-eyed weird look...like a simpleton or drugged.

when the black caucus, especially maxine waters, didnt start screaming on McCrazie's behalf, I knew they were distancing themselves.

The dems have become the embarrassing relative you try to explain to guests.

Flagwaver,
I saw that odd little post of me's, too. I thought there's no way he could be refering to Flagwaver. I stand corrected. What'd you do to get him riled up? Lay down a little reason on him? And the irony: your post gets pulled.

The only thing I'll disagree with you on is your use of "homophobic." To my mind, that's a liberal's word. I think a simple "hatefilled" would have fit the degenerate better.

SHAME on YOU Mr. Towery...
First to the author of this article; at first glance you appear to be a gentleman

But maybe you're not...

Because you have not told the whole story or truth, and I'm sure you know you have not.

You say that the confrontation with that cameraman was under reported? Do you want to know why?
Because if a lot of people saw that footage (election night) it would enrage them.

I saw a bit of it.

I noticed one of Ms. McKinney’s bodyguards BLEEDING. There was a laceration above his right eye. I saw blood trickling down the side of his face. How did that happen? That cameraman must have done something. Also Ms. McKinney's mother, an elderly retired nurse was injured. Now, What did the old woman do? Did she attack the cameraman?

Funny the cameraman wasn't bleeding or hurt, yet he claimed to be the victim.

That cameraman looks like a liar.

So if you're wonder why this story was under reported...it is because most rational people listening to this story and seeing the footage would see that Ms. McKinney and her staff were victimized. (again)

Looking at that footage gives credence to her claim that the media "bush" was out to get her.

Are you suppose to be a republican Mr. Towery? I don't know your party affiliation but still, You could at least try to be impartial in your reporting.

You have a nice day.

Who's Crazy, Ms. McKinney or you?
To the immature posters on this board who are calling Ms. McKinney names; not one of you has explained why you think she’s “crazy”.

Do you disagree with the way she has been voting in congress? And if so, why.

I wonder; why have you all, not offered any rational explanations for your point of views?

So, I guess when logic and reason does not exist; name calling is substituted

I’m not saying that all whites agree with these ridiculous posts because they don’t.

but the only thing I see on this posting board is name-calling. Name calling from a bunch of childish, jealous, fearful people who are probable white.

You people on this board are the racist ones and you all should be embarrassed

Not one of you, on this posting board have said that you disagree with the way Ms. McKinney has been voting in congress. Most of you probably AGREE with her stances, (if you are informed or familiar with her policies.) But you all are too busy being jealous and afraid of her to even know anything about her voting record in congress.
I have not heard any one criticize her abilities as a congresswoman; no one can say she is dishonest. (and this alone speaks volumes) The only thing her detractors can say is “she's crazy”. That’s it. Nothing else.

SEE there is no dirt. So dirt had to be manufactured.

and why was he touching her body in the

in the first place

The laughable thing is that the media wants everyone to believe that her election was lost, due to that nonsense. As if anyone cares if a big burly, aggressive police officer gets swatted by a woman, he shouldn’t be touching.

Ms. McKinney lost because of cheating. And most ordinary citizens suspect this. I have read several articles about how republicans SWITCHED PARTIES and voted democrat. Cheating

I don't live in GA, so I'm not really familiar with Ms. McKinney's reputation prior to her criticism of Mr. Bush. But I have concluded based on what I have read about her since, that she must have been a highly EFFECTIVE congresswoman because Voters kept her in office for over 10 years. Do you also call, all those who voted for her "crazy" as well?

I've never met Ms. McKinney, but I did see her of nightline being interviewed by the hostile "token black" reporter, even though that reporter, was very disrespectful, Ms. McKinney remained gracious and easy going. She came off as likeable.
But you know what? after being insulted and disrespected for so long… in fairness, how much can a person take? So you see, it’s very simple, I think the media, and her detractors attacked her with this in mind.

p.s. If this is a “left” website? Why is there a quote by Delay (R), a convicted felon, regarding McKinney’s character?

Wowsers!
Whatver psychosis ("Mad Cow Disease" comes to mind)the distinguished (now EXtinguished) Ms. McKinney has is apparently contagious. Apparently Cle0p8ta also has caught it.
cleO the Federal Protective Officer "put his hands on her body" because she was attempting to "gate crash" security designed to protect HER worthless person, without the proper identification. There is NO legal reason for assaulting a police officer under those circumstances, and if he had been doing what he/I was trained to do he would have violently taken her to the ground and cuffed her worthless person for felony assault and battery. That same thing would happen to ANY person attempting it. I likewise enjoyed your racist comment that those people opposed to Ms. McKinney's lunatic behavior must be white. You are therefore presuming that blacks some condone totally delusional behavior from Ms. McKinney simply because she's black; a resumption of some sort of a "racial madness" like you're exhibiting. I don't agree. I know many of us are sane and therefore can't condone her behavior. The voters in her district likewise disprove your "racial madness" theory that black have to vote black no matter HOW bad the behavior of the person running. Kudos to the voters in her district. All I have to say is "good riddance to bad rubbish".
