Will Newt Run?

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I’m in Atlanta Thursday – along with other conservative bloggers and writers such as Robert Bluey and Captain Ed Morrissey – to interview former Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The American Solutions conference is the occasion, but it’s also excuse for pundits to question whether or not Gingrich will officially enter the presidential race (after all, he has told us he won’t announce his intentions until after the conference).

The answer to that question depends on whom you ask.

One DC insider reminds me that longtime Gingrich adviser Rich Galen is currently advising another presidential candidate. While purely an “inside baseball” argument, allowing a top-aide to work for another candidate, I’m told, is a tell-tale sign Newt has never really been serious about running.

Yet another source points to an interview Gingrich conducted earlier this year with Dr. James Dobson in which he discussed his past personal peccadilloes. This attempt to put his prurient past behind him, this source argues, is proof-positive a Gingrich candidacy has always been a fait accompli. (After all, why endure an auto de fe for no reason?)

Another cynical but commonly-held view is that Newt’s coquetry with running has always been a gimmick, designed to sell books, promote this conference, and ensure the former Speaker of the House continues to be invited as a regular guest on Fox News.

But running for president -- and garnering favorable public relations attention -- are not mutually exclusive – especially if one does not care to win (and can thus avoid pandering to the masses).

Candidates ranging from Pat Buchanan to Jesse Jackson have run for office, lost, and still managed to advance their cause, celebrity, and pocketbooks at the same time.

Others care less about whether or not he will run, and tell me Gingrich simply should not run.

Gingrich’s many critics like to point out that he already had his chance to take on the Clintons – and that he lost the political battle.

But a maxim in politics is to hang a lantern on your problems, and thus, it could also be argued that Newt’s past experience with the Clintons has uniquely prepared him for the challenge.

Facing such animadversion early in ones career is often a good thing. Gingrich has endured his share of ad hominem attacks, and probably knows the Clintons better than any of the other candidates. There’s something to be said about betting on a fighter who knows how to take a punch.

The question of electability is another issue.

It’s fair to say he was assailed and limned an ultra-conservative bogeyman of the right. As such, he is as divisive a figure as Hillary, and that takes away one of the only advantages a Republican candidate would have in a general election.

(Gingrich’s difficult days in the late 90s have also proven to be serendipitous. Had he remained Speaker during the Bush years, we would not be talking about him today. His Phoenix-like public relations rebirth has been nothing short of amazing.)

Still, others argue that it’s now too late for Newt to run – or that he would simply bollix up the whole race.

Without a doubt, the most likely winner of a Newt candidacy (aside from Newt inc.) would be former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

This is true for two reasons: First, Giuliani’s ceiling in a GOP Primary is likely about 30 percent, meaning no matter how well he does, he will never get more than 30 percent of Republicans to vote for him in a primary.

Newt’s entry would further dilute support for Romney and Thompson, paving the way for Giuliani to win the nomination.

Second, Giuliani is likely the only candidate, in my estimation, is capable of holding his own intellectually against Newt in GOP debates.

But while there are plenty of arguments for why Gingrich should not run, there is one big reason why he should: Substance.

If you’ve been following the feckless candidates in the 2008 presidential race, it is clear Gingrich could, at least, enhance the debate.

While pedantic nabobs don’t have a good win/loss track record in politics, let’s also not forget that while Ronald Reagan was effective at communicating complex ideas in a simple matter, he was, at heart a political philosopher, who read Bastiat, Hayek, and Whittaker Chambers, just to name a few.

So Gingrich’s intellectual appeal may resonate more than you think.

Will American Solutions ultimately be the opening salvo for Newt’s presidential campaign?

Those of us who are hoping Newt will actually make an announcement once the conference ends are most likely going to be disappointed.

His latest announcement -- that he will run only if he has $30 million pledged in advance -- strikes me as a perfect way to hedge his bets. Clearly, he views fundraising as infra dig, and challenging others to do the work for him allows him to either raise the money organically, or blame the system if it fails.

… Perfectly Newtonian.

Newt thinks the masses are calling him
The truth is, the average GOP voter doesn't care one whit about Newt. They don't see him as the guy that can save the party - especially since he is fond of criticizing republicans, the president and the war effort, but cozying up to democrats when it's convenient for him.

Newt's biggest problem is his super-sized ego. Let's not forget the Air Force One incident where he acted like a big baby. Perhaps Newt has since grown up, but I doubt it.

How interesting: I'm not sure how anyone

can "know" the average GOP voter doesn't care one whit about Newt.

While there is NO DOUBT that Newt is a brilliant man, there are those who do believe that he is the only one who can really save the GOP... However, I'm not one of them.

I'm just not sure that there isn't a real character flaw in someone who can walk into a hospital room and hand his wife divorce papaers the night before she's to have a mastectomy.. and then run off with a bimbo.

Newt
Brilliant man. Bad candidate. Only politician I know of with higher negatives than Hillary.

Anne - I don't "know" but suspect
It's not rocket science. Remember a few weeks back when Newt said that if he runs if will be because there is a massive call for him to get in? Well, it's just not happening. It's not that hard to read the tea leaves.

Speaking of character flaws- our guys seem to have a lot of them! Not only Newt, his adultery, and his lousy way of treating his dying wife, but Rudy, his adultery and informing his wife he was divorcing her at a press conference no less, and Fred with his Tennessee stud reputation and penchant for dating women younger than his own children.

Seems like we have quite a few men who do not measure up very well to the higher standard we set for personal behavior in leadership roles.

HUNTER 2008

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

http://www.gohunter08.com

Aahhh: Big HUGE difference between a

single man dating younger women... and a married man cheating on his wife.

No comparison, so lets not blur the issue! Geesh!

HUNTER 2008
Married to the same woman for 34 years.

Hunter: God bless him! :-)
I just wish he'd get more traction....

Newt must run
If there is someone, who can bring substance, a sound government plan and a direction to win America's future that is Newt Gingrich.

I am not worried about a dilution of votes if Newt jumps in the presidential race. There shouldn't be any doubts NW is a leader, an ideas man and a conservative.

Can I forgive his trespasses? Yes, I can.

Looking at the 2008 Presidential Election polls trends as of today Democrats will win the 2008 Presidential Elections. All of our candidates have losing trends against a Democrat candidate except for John Edwards, GOP's candidates beats him up.

At any rate, the Bottom Line is that instead of continuing beating up GOP's candidates, we need to close ranks, become militant, grasp everybody that can legally vote and take them to the polls to vote and even volunteer to help the handicap with transportation and/or help them in casting their vote due to their handicap.

America will cease to be the land of the free and the home of the brave with another socialist administration.

Anne - right
Sleeping around with women half your age is not as bad as cheating on your wife. Whew, I'm glad we got that straight.

But we just happen to have a few good men like Romney, Huckabee, and Hunter who are actually grown-ups and qualified to be president as well.

Border Control and Immigration ala NW
Who is without baggage cast the first... vote? ... no, no, no... the best plan for Winning The Future.

1. "Getting Serious About Border Security, WWII Style", find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC_KYU8i4Ew

2. Which of the GOP's candidates have something better that the following plan: "Ending the Dishonesty: The Way Forward on Border Control and Patriotic Immigration ", find it here: http://www.newt.org/backpage.asp?art=2977

3. On the series of speeches about the World that works versus the World that doesn't works, watch these two videos:

a. "FedEx vs. Government Bureaucracy", find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15D3ElV1Jzw

b. "Newt's Mackinac Speech", at Mackinac Island, MI, 25 Sep 2007, watch it here: http://www.americansolutions.com/Blog/Read.aspx?guid=dfe395a6-e20e-41c8-b01a-9424181a8b9a

4. Who has something better than NW for Winning The Future of America?

Huckabee can "hold his own" with anyone
Matt Lewis: How can you say that Rudy is the only one who can hold his own in a debate with Newt?

As you saw at the NRA and on Hardball, and when Wolf tried to embarrass him on evolution, Huckabee is the next Great Communicator. Even McCain was giving Mike props after he hit the evolution question out of the park. Huckabee is sharp, he's persuasive, and he's winsome.

Why do you think Newt is giving props to Huckabee in interviews? Why was Newt blogging for Huckabee on Monday night?

Remember having an easy teacher who would give you 5 points just for putting your name on your paper? That's basically what some of the reviews did for Rudy just for showing up to the NRA and answering his cell phone. How can so many "conservatives" be flocking to some one who is wrong on:
1. Guns
2. Illegal Immigration (not a crime?)
3. Abortion
4. Marriage
???

Rudy beating Hillary would have the moral significance of the Jets beating the Giants. None.

One more thing...After Fred comes down off of Mt. Olympus and we find out he's a mortal like the rest of us...after he gets his spanking from Mike in the Michigan debate in October, all of you Fred Heads are still welcome to join Mike Huckabee!

The only choice for me is Mike Huckabee.
http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=VerticalDay.Home&l=4750395850E89C71A0D23968F1B5F2B0

Newt's really bright
Though I find his treatment of his wife disturbing. Unfortunately, the candidates doing best in the polls (Rudy, Thompson, McCain) are all divorced and have some moral issues, though Thompson probably has the least. I like Duncan Hunter, and I also like Huckabee and certainly Ron Paul, whatever you think of his position on Iraq, is a moral and reasonable man.

Bottom line for me, though, is not having Hillary win the White House. For the GOP primaries, I'm voting Duncan Hunter, but for the general election, I am voting Republican, regardless of the candidate. I hope Newt, whether or not he runs, takes a position of significance within the party, because he has some brilliant ideas.

2008 Presidential Elections Stats
Let's us be pragmatic instead of idealistic. Take a look at the following statistics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_Representations_of_Two-Way_Contest_Data_from_United_States_presidential_election%2C_2008#Graphical_Representations_of_Two-Way_Contest_Data

Now, tell me, at this point in time, which candidate is really going to change the slope of the linear trends from negative to positive?

The only hope to change those trends is Newt Gingrich.

You got it, Shefali
Right on. Vote your conscience in the Primary, then vote pragmatic in the General election, if need be.

Yea another disgraced Republican
He may have a Phd in history and a huge ego but I would LOVE him to run. He would be trounced.

Everyone says he is BIRGHT? Really. I am sorry but a history degree is easy; even a PhD in history is one step above an English or Art History degree.

The thing that told me he lack maturity (besides being an adulter, cheating on his wives, married three times), was the following:

He shut down the Gov because he's a baby and was trying to snub and spite Clinton. GREAT Character that Newt-tee. Of course he spent 100% of his time trying to GET CLINTON on perjury. Guess what, Clinton's "O" office affair is quaint compared to what the GOP Boys are doing today: boys, prostitutes and strangers in men's rooms (or cops, Doha!). GROSS!

GOP = GAY Ornery Party?

Another was when New-tee whined, cried and sniffled like a BIG FAT BABY because Clinton would not let fly up front (or back) where the "first class" area is for the President on Air Force One, waaaaaaaaaaaaa. What a petty person.

He will not run. EVEN Republicans tried to kick him out; he resigned in disgrace with ethic charges and a 28% approval rating. WHEN WILL Republicans LEARN, WE DON'T WANT Partisan Jack a****.

He is damaged goods. This Nation has millions of people; there HAS to be better people than him or any of the other chuckle-heads of the GOP 2008 losers line up. The GOP will lose because its the WAR Party.

The Republican BS, fear mongering, lies, trampling of the constitution, corruption, perversion, big deficit spending, ear marks and most of all Iraq, has made the American people say ENOUGH of the Conservatives and GOP. The GOP deserves to lose lose lose. My fear is the Dems will have a TOO stronger majority in the houses and the white house. However if we don't vote for Dems and a filibuster proof majority, Republicans will ruin and bankrupt America.

Not A Leader
Newt is an ideas guy. He is not a leader. Brilliant doesn't equal capable. If I want to hear a lecture on the qualities of peanut butter and jelly, I'll call on Newt. If I want someone to actually make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Newt's not the guy for the job.

Okay roberto-jetpilot:

Didn't you have quite enough on Coulter's column?

Run Newt, run!
Because you can never have too many candidates that have been MARRIED THREE TIMES. :)

I swear, you people defy parody!

Gee, two liberal twits are up early!
.

Anne
Perfect timing. Half an hour scanning some interesting stuff, and off to work just as the trolls show up. Saves wear and tear on my scroll key, and head shakes at the indignant right wingers who get their buttons pushed and jump into the puddle with the attention cravers.

Well....
Some of us are more demanding in our choice of candidates: We want someone with intelligence AND integrity. Someone like Ron Paul.

http://www.ronpaullibrary.org

ronniepaul???? LMAO

joke! :-)

Blah, Blah, Blah
The other candidates' operatives come out of the woodwork everytime Newt or Thompson are mentioned in an opinion piece. Fair enough...that's what they do. All of the talking points are hit...he's got baggage, he lost to Clinton in the political arena, he cheated on his wife, etc.

Well, with the exception of Reagan, how have the "no baggage" guys done for us in the past 40 years? It's time we stop electing professional politicians and give someone the job who has ideas for fixing problems instead of creating new ones. Romney is the only other choice, but he's running too far behind. In a debate of ideas, Newt would overshadow all of the others.

This Conservative wants someone to fix the government. Newt's the only one I hear talking about that.

Now it's about morals with the libs?
Talk about parody rich. The libs are now bringing up how many times a candidate has been married? That's a laugh.

If morality is going to be the defining issue for this campaign then bring it on. With the Dems likely nominating the most demonstrably corrupt major presidential candidate in American history, I think we'll do fine.

Personally, I would prefer someone who didn't serve papers on his wife in the hospital room but last time I looked, that was not against the law.

Stealing billing records, doing insider trading, using stolen FBI files on political enemies, etc. IS illegal. But hey, we don't have to go back that far. HRC is guilty of taking dirty campaign money IN THE CURRENT CAMPAIGN!

Like I've said before, if the Dems nominate the corrupt Lenninist HRC, even Ron Paul could beat her in the general (and that is saying something given that NO sitting House member has ever moved directly from capitol hill to serve a full term in the White House.)

Help.
Well Newt might get Rat Fink Ann Coulter and the Fox NOISE Channel to help him with his campaign as they are love SO much by both left and right. I'm sure he wouldn't have any trouble getting the nomination. NOT!!!!!

Anne please stop with the ronniepaul!
It's like fingernails on a chalkboard! He's irrelevant - get over him.

Beeblebrox - in what world?
Paul beating Hillary in the general? Nonsense. And your defense of Newt's terrible treatment of his wife is lame. I can't and will never vote for a guy who is so utterly self-focused.

A big no thank you for Newt.

Brilliant Leader
Keep in mind that we are looking for a leader of our nation, not a marital partner. Historically great leaders have had flaws and learned from them. God didn't throw Moses under the bus for murder or King David for murder and adultery. The fact that Newt confessed and repented of his failures on Dr. James Dobson's program is impressive and good enough for me.

Most people seem to be taking their cues from what the liberal media projected upon Newt in the 90's. If the media bashed Rudy on his marriages and estranged children as much as they bashed Newt, most people would have balked at a Rudy candidacy from the outset.

Also, a cliché that I've seen a number of times is "brilliance doesn't equal a leader." Are we to believe they are mutually exclusive? For the record, Newt lead the:
- capturing of the Republican majority of the US House for the first time in forty years.
- restoring of fiscal responsibility to an out-of-control congress and balancing of the federal budget.
-push for the first tax cuts in 17 years (capital gains tax cuts from rates that were out of sight, $500 per child tax credit and tuition tax credits).
-push for welfare reform, which has been a smashing success.
-push for congressional reforms including term limits for committee chairs.

Had it not been for Newt, we might still be groaning about the mayhem of the welfare system and begging politicians to fix it. I can't think of any political leader at the federal level who had an agenda of such grand changes and proceeded to make such successful changes as Newt has - and all this with a Democratic president who opposed the proposals.

If you check out newt.org you will see that he has a current agenda for change that I think all conservatives would appreciate. He is the only one I see that has such substance for change and has the potential to pull them off.

Newt is both brilliant and a leader – check the facts.

I would vote for him in a heartbeat!
Why is it that moral flaws in democrats are tolerated but Not in
Republicans?

Read Newts books. Remember his brilliant contract with America that turned the country around and forced clinton to become a moderate!

Newt can save the country if people would quit looking at the warts.

Listen to him. He is the only candidate who can address issues and can speak. Hillary can also talk but listen to her content. Think Newts common sense could not overide her?
I think he is the only man.
Also Hunter is great but is viewed as a non entity as is Huckabee who can also think, talk, and chew gum at the same time!

IF NEWT HAD REMAINED SPEAKER?

.....Matt ...

.....Are we forgetting history? ...Republican's have a House rule that the Speaker has to give up his post if he is under investigation on ethics charges ...so the Democrats know how to get rid of any Speaker that gives them a tough time ...Tom Delay ring a bell? ...

....The Democrats do not have the same rule so a Democrat Speaker could have $90,000 in his freezer (theoretically) and still keep his job ...

.....the Democrats filed about 100 ethics charges against Newt ...one of which was accepting a $4,000 advance on a book he had written (Newt was an established author) ...Hillary had a book ghost written for her and accepted a much larger advance (that some claimed was a campaign contribution in disguise) but Hillary was given a pass (surprise, surprise) ...

.....All the charges against Newt were dropped except one which was questionable concerning his association with GOPAC ...but the main reason that Newt threw in the towel was that the House Republicans ran from him like scalded cats or more aptly ...deserted him like rats from a sinking ship ...

.....And that is the main difference between the Republicans and the Democrats ...at the slightest hint of impropriety Republicans throw their man under the bus ...while the Democrats under the same circumstance circle the wagons .....COLOSSUS

NEWTS BAGGAGE

.....This might seem like I am defending Newt but I am just trying to be fair ...

.....Much has been made over Newt delivering divorce papers to his wife while she was in the hospital for cancer ...

.....this charge is usually framed by "how could anyone be so cruel and heartless?" ...

.....It does on the surface seem cold but has anyone ever asked his ex-wife for her side of the story? ...for all we know she might have asked him to bring the papers ...or maybe Newt was acting on the advice of his attorney ...

.....Compared to the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Ron Brown and Vince Foster ...Newt's peccadillos seem tame indeed .....COLOSSUS

Newt may be
A brilliant leader, but he has more baggage than Hillary Clinton and the Dems would hang him high. Could you imagine the campaign? Nasty from the git-go. I hope that Newt does not decide to run since it will muddy the waters even more.

Fred Thompson is my choice. A great guy and I think would make a great President. He is a true Conservative and that is what I am looking for. Yes, mortal but I doubt very seriously that Romney or anybody else can spank him in a debate.

Huckabee is a good choice but he is getting no traction.

Please newt....dont! RUN FRED RUN!

Jean are you paying attention?
Fred is not a true conservative - look at his record. He curtailed your free speech rights with McCain-Feingold. Why are you Fredheads so willing to overlook that giant blunder? It was the ONLY thing he worked passionately for in the Senate. It should disqualify him from the get go. So much for his devotion to the constitution.

Second - he is stumbling badly on the campaign trail. He can barely put 2 sentences together, much less a policy position or vision. He has avoided every debate and will probably continue to get out of as many of them as possible. Why? Because he knows any of the other candidates will wipe the floor with him. He can only compete with his personality, which will only take him so far. After that he's got to show that he has substance. So far he is failing at that.

Wrong Gender
Hillary has the Demonoid nomination locked up.

Repubs need a female to counter.

Yeah, Yeah, Sarah Palin (Gov of Alaska) is a newbie, but get the focus groups together and see if she's viable.

My vote: Duncan and Sarah.

Backup: Possibly Newt and Sarah, but I'm scared New might "put the moves" on her.....

What about Fred and Sarah?

MREs
Watching these Repub candidates is like eating an MRE: very bland and constipating.

Huckabee is Most Qualified
Of the Republican candidates, only three of them have governing experience, executive experience. Of those three, only one is conservative.

Who was the last senator, much less a congressman, to be elected President? Even JFK won in '60, now we know, only because the Chicago machine had dead people voting for him. Who was the senator or congressman before that who went straight from Congress to the presidency?

At the end of the day, the people want some one who actually knows how to run a government. All the ideals in the world are no good, if, as the executive, you can't govern.

Who is the only conservative with executive experience? Mike Huckabee. See for yourself.

http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=VerticalDay.Home&l=4750395850E89C71A0D23968F1B5F2B0

Mike Huckabee is the best candidate
Ditto everything that snowman and portlandmom have said - and add something else that Newt just doesn't have and can't learn...

Huckabee is charming and disarming. He doesn't rile people. He can debate and score points without making people want to slap him (unlike a certain someone who can't get over himself)

I provide a service, you're welcome
As an Independent I hate both parties, ha-ha; especially the one in power screwing up so very much. I rarely hear any real criticism of the Republicans here, so I provide a service. You are welcome.

Some of you hard core Republicans are cool, have a sense of humor, but some are just tools. To set the record straight, I'm not liberal (libertarian yes). I'm registered Independent and sadly voted for Bush in 2004. America is not just hard core neo-cons or far left. Most American's hold mixed views across a wide spectrum. Some of you with little organs (brains) can't grasp that. PS Bush =71% disapprove, WAR=75% out. Deal with it.

I could bash Dems, say negatives or concerns I have for DEM rule, but why? Its done daily in spades on this forum. Conservatives should criticize & FIX your party, before worrying about the Dems.

Huckabee, he's OK but he is a gun-nut (or says so). Apparently he's looking forward to Duck hunting in heaven. I didn't know OUR heaven is Duck hell. ha-ha. He is pandering for gun nuts? No one should pander. WE HAVE BIGGER ISSUES than if Billy Bob can own ten M16's or AK47's.

Primaries are crazy. Who cares about Iowa & New Hampshire. Why should they have more say? It takes choice away & gives power to special interest & central (special) party control. What if we got to vote for two or three from each party? Huckabee? have chance, Hillary? not a lock.

I hate that candidates have to check off the boxes to get nominated. With the GOP its: Anti Roe v Wade, More Gun's, no Gays & more IRAQ WAR (plus secret wire taps & prisons). You also have to be pro-oil & anti-environment.

Dems have their boxes to check as well. I’m SICK of all special interest controlling who our leaders are, on a few SPECIAL issues. No special issues are as important as our economy, health care, security and #1, stopping the hemorrhage from Iraq, a NON VALUE ADDED WAR. GOP will lose due to the latter, Iraq, and deserves it.

Deja Vu
Show of hands (again)...

Who here is not happy with Bush's globalist stand? Who here is not happy with Bush's open borders? With his NAU treaties like NAFTA, SPP and LOTS?

Gingrich is a *globalist* just as Bush is. The other day on Cavuto he revealed his blind bias. He blamed the destruction of Detroit's auto industry solely on unions and regulations, without a peep bout the Japanese assault and our gov'ts unwillingness to defend American industry. He compared 400,000 U.S. auto workers 40 years ago with 82,000 now, dismissing the facts that A) it was a result of the U.S. gov't allowing Japan et al to gain an unfair advantage with (Japanese) gov't subsidies allowing them to operate at a loss and the American people's loss of pride and sudden lust for the almighty dollar, B) those 82,000 today largely work for foreign car makers.
The latter doesn't bother Gingrich, because he doesn't see a lick of difference between an American and a Chinese, Mexican, Brit or what have you.

No. The problem conservatives have today is that the GOP has been taken over by globalists. Don't vote for any more globalists if you want to preserve your country.

Did you know Huckabee is SOFT on
IMMIGRATION???

Please check this before deciding on Huckabee, unless you like the illegal invasion that is ruining our nation.

http://ontheissues.org/2008/Mike_Huckabee_Immigration.htm

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
Check Huckabee's record on illegal immigration before you go throwing your vote his way. He is SOFT on illegal immigration. A vote for Huck will continue the invasion that is destroying America.

http://ontheissues.org/2008/Mike_Huckabee_Immigration.htm

pianogirl
Either you are deceived or you are deceiving. What do you mean by "SOFT on illegal immigration?" Making an assertion doesn't make it true. I went to your link and read it. And your point is?

Huckabee says, "My number one priority is to secure America's border." http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Issues.View&Issue_id=4

One can be 100% for sealing the borders and building the fence without having to scream and bang pots and pans about throwing illegals back over the Rio Grande. Do you realize that 1 in 25 people in this country are illegal aliens? There are more of them than there are law enforcement plus national guard. Huckabee is smart enough to talk about a "border wall first" solution without sending the entire hispanic community running into the arms of the Democrats.

A border wall is a joke.
What makes you think a border wall would help anything...maybe just as a palliative remedy to quell the masses. But you don't actually think it would keep illegals out, do you??

Ron Paul wants to clarify the 14th Amendment to quash the anchor baby provision. He also wants to end the gravy train of benefits that attracts them here. He is for the rule of law, and believes illegal immigrants ARE criminals, unlike some of the other candidates.

http://www.ronpaul2008.com

Snowman
I think you should take a few minutes to REALLY read my link from ontheissues.

I went to see Huckabee at a local event, and sure, it's easy for a candidate to say whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear. But the proof is in the pudding, as they say. Look at his voting record. He is truly soft on illegals. Hint: the word "amnesty" is a clue.

http://www.ronpaullibrary.org

Huckabee...
is a Christian Socialist.

NO TO NEWT
The Best Newt can do is giving speaches and writing books, look extreemly scholarly, then by his very good conservative standings, he will
make a great Mr.Vice President. Of course no one will ever be as awesome as our present beloved and only Mr. Cheney. We Have all Mr. Gingrich`s well written books, he is a great intelect, yes a great debator as well, but he is not the winning ticket for the republicans, for the presidency.
Please, No one, ever, ever, will be a second Ronald Reagan.

Question Please
I am watching the Republican candidates debate at Morgan State and was surprised to see Alan Keyes there. I immediately looked on his website and it doesn't say he is a candidate, but when I googled him he is listed as a 2008 candidate on Wikipedia. So, when did Keyes announce? I keep up pretty well with the news but hadn't heard that he was running. Does anybody here know?

Lily, ...
I started hearing about it yesterday. Not sure exactly when he declared.

Thanks Farmer's Wife
Thanks for responding. Meanwhile I did some more googling and found out he filed a Statement of Candidacy on September 14. I haven't seen it in the two daily papers I read, or the three more I read online, or on townhall, and I haven't heard it mentioned on TV. He is a pretty flamboyant character that I would expect the media to pick up, so this is odd. And he loves to grandstand, so I would have expected some kind of press conference. It's almost as if he wanted to make his grand entrance on this Morgan State debate. I wonder if his presence will have an effect on Gingrich's decision.

NW won't run-It is settled and official.
Today, Saturday, September 29, 2007 on or about 5:20PM EST Newt Gingrich told Fox News "Big Story - Weekend" anchor, J. Banderas that he will not run for President. Upon questioning if he would accept a VP ticket, NW said that he doesn't see himself doing that, in other words, No.

IMO, Newt is having too much fun in what he does at American Solutions. Certainly, he is more productive and remunerated selling solutions than as a slave in a government administrative position.
