Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Early next week, Republicans in Congress face a decision that will say much about the party’s future direction on spending discipline.

Rep. Roger Wicker is going to the Senate to replace retiring Sen. Trent Lott, leaving a rare open seat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

The Appropriations Committee controls the spending levers for most of the federal government. And too often, both parties abuse that power to insert “earmarks” that divert your tax dollars to special interest projects. In recent years, these earmarks have included millions to build a rainforest in Iowa and the famous “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska.

In 2006, the American people showed that, when given a choice between Democrats and Republicans who act like Democrats, they will pick the Democrats. The Republican Party needs to return to its fiscally responsible roots in order to regain public trust on this key issue. Sometimes, you need to shake up business-as-usual in order to make real change.

That’s where Congressman Jeff Flake comes into the picture. Rep. Flake, a Republican from Arizona, is a close ally of fiscal conservatives who has made a name for himself on Capitol Hill for his stalwart stand against the practice of earmarking. He consistently puts the spotlight on pork spending in his weekly “Egregious Earmark” press releases and in frequent speeches on the House floor. Last year, he offered dozens of floor amendments to strike funding for some of the most abusive earmarks.

Jeff Flake is serious about reining in spending and has done a heroic job fighting waste. But he can do even more by attacking the issue at its choke-point from inside the Appropriations Committee.

The earmarks process is deliberately complicated and difficult to monitor. Members of Congress who are not on the Appropriations Committee have little time to even review them. For example, the “omnibus” appropriations bill passed last month contained more than 8,000 earmarks spread over 3,417 pages, and most Members of Congress had only 22 hours to read it before the vote.

Appointing Jeff Flake to Appropriations would give taxpayers a seat at the spending table and provide an early warning system against abusive earmarks. The committee spot will provide Rep. Flake’s team with critical new staff resources and early access to the text of spending bills. Simply having him on the committee would provide a major deterrent effect against some of the worst abuses. After all, as we saw in vote after vote last year, it is very tough to kill earmarks once they are placed in a bill. Most important, perhaps, is that Rep. Flake’s appointment would make a major statement to the American people that the Republican Party is returning to first principles, such as bringing transparency and accountability to Congressional spending.

No doubt, Minority Leader John Boehner is working hard to convince all of his fellow Republicans that returning to limited government principles is the way to regain the trust of the American voting public. But we need your help to push this through.

FreedomWorks is organizing a campaign web site at www.MakeitFlake.com. Our allies, including the Club for Growth, the National Taxpayers’ Union, and others, are all calling on GOP leaders to appoint Rep. Flake to the Appropriations Committee. We have already generated thousands of phone calls and emails to the Republican leadership. We are hearing that the calls are making a difference, but we need your help. Please join us and make your voice heard as well.

This is a powerful opportunity for the Republican Leadership now in Congress to prove they are serious about returning to an agenda of conservative economic, limited government principle.

Leader Boehner together with members of the Republican Steering Committee—specifically Roy Blunt (R-7, MO), Eric Cantor (R-7, VA), John Carter (R-31, TX), and Adam Putnam (R-12, FL)-- will ultimately decide who fills the current vacancy on the Appropriations Committee. Contact them today and let them know Jeff Flake is the right man for the job.

Most Republicans understand the need to return to the party’s optimistic, responsible, limited-government principles. The danger is that some in the party are comfortable returning to the “permanent minority” status Republicans had in Congress for much of the late 20th century. Before 1994, too many Republicans were content to simply go along with a big-spending Democrat majority, just as long as they got some table scraps.

Putting Rep. Jeff Flake on the Appropriations Committee is a good step towards avoiding a return that kind of complacency, and will be a major step towards restoring the Republican brand on government spending.

One of Two
Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter are the only Viable (sorry Ron Paul) Conservative Republican candidates in the race who will make Smaller Government & a Return to Reaganite Principles a priority!!

Choose Wisely!
Vote Conservative
Vote Fred Thompson '08

W/O=

Fred's time to put up or shut up!
Thompson has been out of the running for the last few contests and while he may finally have caught on fire by highlighting Huckabee's liberal antics in Arkansas, is it too little and too late? Time will tell if SC voters think Thompson has got the "fire in the belly" over that loose cannon on deck Juan McQuisling and the Huckster. The stakes are mighty high!

Earmarks are not the big deal
Earmarks are simply Congress spending money instead of the Executive Branch. I agree many earmarks are wasteful and think Flake would be a good choice. But if the Republicans are really serious about fiscal discipline, they will need to tackle entitlements and entire programs instead of tinkering with a few earmarks.

When I hear candidates talking about being for the "10th Amendment", I hope they are serious and want the federal government to only perform the duties it is granted the power to act on in the Constitution. Right now, the Commerce clause and the general welfare generic statement is used to justify the federal government doing whatever it feels like, and that is a perverse interpretation of the Constitution.

sans pareil
"Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter are the only Viable Conservative Republican candidates in the race"

According to Dictionary.com, viable means "Capable of success or continuing effectiveness; practicable". Thompson is languishing and must do very well in South Carolina. Hunter has been hovering around 1%. At the same time, Ron Paul has beaten Thompson in New Hampshire and Michigan and has a solid shot at doing well in both Nevada and South Carolina this weekend.

And you say that Thompson and Hunter are "viable" and Ron Paul is not?!

I will agree that there are only three true conservatives in the Republican race right now: Thompson, Hunter, and Paul. As of today, only Paul has proven support both in votes and in donations. While it is still too early to count Fred Thompson out of the running, so too it is very premature to write off Ron Paul. He has more money than any other candidate, and considering the fact that the mainstream media has practically ignored Ron Paul's campaign, he is doing amazingly well.

After this weekend, Ron Paul may very well be the ONLY conservative choice left in the election. Fred Thompson is basically broke, so if he cannot garner at least a second place finish, he will likely have to drop out. More and more information is coming out indicating our bleak fiscal status which is likely to far outweigh foreign policy as the central issue of this campaign. If this happens, Ron Paul's message will resonate like never before. Watch the following Glenn Beck video for an example of what I am talking about:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=I-16u9x3tfE

Conservatives in the Republican party need to rally behind a candidate to save what remains of our party platform and offer a real alternative to the Democrat's socialistic schemes. If it is not to be Fred Thompson, you should seriously consider the option of Ron Paul. Our country cannot afford not to.

Soul? What soul?
The GOP has no soul, not now, not ever. For the first time in recent memory there is no conservative white knight on a horse who is going to do battle against evil liberals! The current crop of GOP shemales is too pathetic for words. Face it sheeple, you've been had.

If
Flake is passed over for Cole then we can believe these idiots are so blinded they can't see the slap coming. We sent them a very broad hint in '06, and a broader one last year over
illegal immigration.
We have young families trying to make a decent living for themselves and their kids and what do these nincompoops do..try to buy votes with earmarks. And I agree it's not only earmarks, the Republicans were elected in '94 on the promise of cutting down the size of government and they reneged, not on all but a good portion of it. And then Jorge comes in on his compassionate conservative white horse and we get more spending. He was buying the Democrats so they'd get on board his illegal, open borders express.

GOP choice
As the primaries advance, I find myself inclined to vote for the most electable candidate versus my ideal candidate. The specter of Clinton or Obama in the White House is too foreboding. Mitt Romney is my candidate of choice, but I will vote for John McCain if he statistically becomes the most electable GOP candidate. Compromise [McCain] is preferable to a complete disaster [Obama or Clinton]. I have truly lost my soul....

ACLU Comes To Rescue Of Larry Craig?

How can sex in a public restroom stall be private?

CBS-In an effort to help Sen. Larry Craig, the American Civil Liberties Union is arguing that people who have sex in public bathrooms have an expectation of privacy.

Craig, of Idaho, is asking the Minnesota Court of Appeals to let him withdraw his guilty plea to disorderly conduct stemming from a bathroom sex sting at the Minneapolis airport.

The ACLU filed a brief Tuesday supporting Craig. It cited a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling 38 years ago that found that people who have sex in closed stalls in public restrooms “have a reasonable expectation of privacy.”

They've been "had" for decades, and still are ignorant of factual matters regarding governing in the United States.

Hurricane Bruiser
You are exactly right.

If John Boehner genuinely wanted to do something about the awful mess that is our federal government, the binge spending in which he and his supposedly Republican colleagues have shamelessly engaged for so long, he should propose, forthwith (and just for instance), the repeal of the clearly unconstitutional big-government program called No Child Left Behind. NCLB is an absolute abomination, a brazen boondoggle that the Ohio congressman just happened to play a key role in shepherding through Congress as Chairman of the Education Committee in 2001-2. I'll bet he'd prefer we not remember or think too much about that.

(Even better, scam-artist Boehner could simply retire and leave Washington altogether - that is, if he truly wanted to help clean things up.)

All this yapping about earmarks amounts to little more than a diversion, and we're suckers if we fall for it.

Interesting quote from the column:
"In 2006, the American people showed that, when given a choice between Democrats and Republicans who act like Democrats, they will pick the Democrats."

Harry Truman said essentially the same thing: "Give the American people a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat, and they'll choose the Democrat every time."

Something to keep in mind when considering candidates like Giuliani and McCain.

Flake
Keep in mind that he is a "Comprehensive" type. He has opposed the fence and enforcement and has backed McCain's amnesty efforts.

Great Honest article
It was a joy to see the honesty but also scares the crap out of me.
No One has mentioned the numbers from yesterdays primary. The libs had just as many people turn out and vote and it was a meaningless primary for them

we need another
Contract with America. No BS this time. That or we throw them all out on there arses

Ron Paul Won't Be Stopped?
He was stopped the moment he opened his mouth during the debates.

Go ahead, throw more money at him, cover your car with bumperstickers, harrass people leaving grocery stores with signs, and use as much finger dexterity as you can texting phone polls.

Guess what?

He's done, Boutte. I suggest moving to Texas and parking yourself on Paul's front porch and be his monkey butler.

Boutte
Sieg heil.

"Dr Paul, despite a total and co-ordinated media blackout, "

A total crock. Ron Paul has been all over the airwaves. He made a complete a$$ of himself during the SC Republican debate. Because he makes a complete a$$ of himself, he is sloughed off as irrelevant by more than 9 out of every 10 people who witness him opening his yap. He is irrelevant and a loser on the national scene because of HIS OWN ACTIONS AND STATEMENTS, not because of some mythical media blackout conspiracy alleged by the paranoid tinfoil hat crowd. Ron Paul has stopped himself, in fact, he never got going! ROTFL!!

Word of advice, Boutte: Finish grade school, high school, go to college and then do something productive.

bs artist
Please, you're looking for the Democratic Underground.

It's the spending, stupid...
THAT is the message that needs to get "slapped" into the congress, republicans, democrats, socialists, whatever... It's so freaking simple that it HAS to be a conspiracty... They must take all new congress members to some sort of "orientation" where they tell them, "don't worry about how much your legislation costs, those suckers in the electorate will keep voting for you as long as it doesn't gore THEIR ox"... It's kind of like people who are 100 pounds overweight and say "I just can't lose it" when all they do is eat and sit on their fat butts. Congress says "we can't balance the budget" and "we need to raise taxes" because the can't do simple math: If you spend 2 trillion dollars a year (that's $2,000,000,000,000.00!!!) you will need to bring in that same amount. There are two ways you can prevent the "output" from being more than the "input" (JUST like weightloss): You can REDUCE "output" or you can INCREASE "input". (reduce what you eat or increase what you burn via exercise). The trick is realizing that there is an upper limit to how much "input" you can take out of the economy before it collapses...

Earmarking is meaningless
Earmarking is meaningless, because so little money is spent on bridges to nowhere. The real money is in popular entitlements like social security and medicare.

If earmarks are eliminated, the money will still be spent on bridges to nowhere. It will just be allocated at the state level, after the Congress passes the same amount of money out as a block grant.

But I do support getting rid of earmarks because it is a highly visible cosmetic issue. We can take care of this, then move on to something serious.

Ron Paul is libertarian,not conservative
Ron Paul is a libertarian, not a conservative, which is why he has not chance of winning the Republican nomination. Even though Republicans take a nearly libertarian position on some issues, we are not libertarians.

It's also important that libertarians have been around for a long, long time, and they always lose. I can remember libertarians complaining about some of President Reagan's actions in the early 80's.
