Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This 3-minute video is a "Tour of Things That Did Not Happen in Durham," hosted by Townhall's Mary Katharine Ham. Enjoy.

This week, the Duke lacrosse team is back in the news because Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong has finally decided to drop charges of rape against three lacrosse players in the face of increasing evidence of both the players’ innocence and his own prosecutorial misconduct.

He has yet to drop charges of sexual offense and kidnapping, but experts expect him to do so shortly, since the accuser in the case can no longer even remember if she was penetrated on the night of the alleged attack.

When you’ve heard about Duke lacrosse for the past 9 months, you’ve heard all kinds details about possible rape, sexual assault, underaged drinking, strippers, and public urination. But what don’t you know about the Duke lacrosse team? There’s plenty.

1. Guess what the graduation rate is for the Duke lacrosse team.

No really, go for it. Hazard a guess. A team at an elite private university is still full of a bunch of numbskull jocks, right? And, we all know what kind of guys the Duke lacrosse players are. The very even-handed mainstream media has treated us to a picture of them as non-stop, beer-guzzling Neanderthals who spend all their time using Mommy’s and Daddy’s Northeastern, lily-white riches to find new and exciting ways to exploit local minorities.

Well, those meat-headed cavemen have a 100-percent graduation rate. One hundred percent. You read that right. That’s three percent higher than the overall student-athlete graduation rate, at a university with one of the highest student-athlete graduation rates in the nation.

Only one other men’s sport at Duke—cross country—can match that rate.

2. Did you know they didn’t just graduate? Many of them even distinguished themselves academically?

This from the report of the Lacrosse Ad Hoc Review Committee, the group of Duke faculty charged with deciding whether or not to retain the lacrosse program in the wake of the rape case.

In 2005, twenty seven members of the lacrosse team, more than half, made the Atlantic Coast Conference's Academic Honor Roll, more than any other ACC lacrosse team. 9 Between 2001 and 2005, 146 members of the lacrosse team made the Academic Honor Roll, twice as many as the next ACC lacrosse team. The lacrosse team's academic performance generally is one of the best among all Duke athletic teams.

Professors described lacrosse players in their classes as “polite students” who “took academic obligations seriously.”

3. Most of the lacrosse players are middle-class, suburban kids, not uber-rich socialites.

Also from the Ad Hoc Review Committee:

The majority of the players come from middle-class, suburban families (there are a few players from both very wealthy and from working-class settings). Most members of the team are recruited from the northeast-New York, New Jersey and Maryland are the traditional centers of the sport.

Wow, that’s not the picture the media paints, is it? Many of the players are indeed well-off and attended prep schools, but they’re not, for the most part, the Martha’s Vineyard-dwelling elitists the media makes them out to be. Here’s how the AP, in an attempt to make Seligmann and Finnerty look as upper-crust as possible, describes their homes:

Finnerty hails from Garden City, N.Y., and lived in a Dutch colonial houseon a cul-de-sac. A lacrosse net and equipment were visible in the yard, which abuts a golf course…

The Seligmanns’ home — a two-story red-brick house with twin white columns —sits about 17 miles west of Manhattan and within 1½ miles of three golf courses.

A Dutch colonial and a two-story brick home on cul-de-sacs, near golf courses? They’re not destitute, but I know plenty of folks whose homes would fit those descriptions, who aren’t the country’s elite by any stretch of the imagination.

Clarification: Just wanted to add that I found out Finnerty's father is the high-powered head of a very large hedge fund, and has served in many high-profile investment positions, so I will let you draw your own conclusions about the level of his privilege--which, of course, remains completely irrelevant to the case. But the majority of the Duke lacrosse players, as stated by the Review Committee, are middle-class.

4. The Blue Devil lacrosse team was ranked No. 2 in the nation when Duke President Richard Brodhead cancelled the season and pushed Coach Mike Pressler into resignation.

A lot of people discount this particular injustice of the Duke lacrosse case, but these guys had a very decent shot at a Division I NCAA lacrosse championship last year. Their season was cancelled before any charges were even brought. Even if the three guys eventually charged were guilty, which it appears almost entirely certain they are not, the whole team lost its chance at a season because Brodhead couldn’t stand up to the P.C. bum rush that convicted the whole team when an investigation had barely started.

All 47 men on the team—many of whom weren’t even at the party where the alleged attack occurred—had worked their entire lives to earn a spot in a national championship contending program. It is no small thing to play on a team like that. That’s years of fall ball seasons, three-hour practices, backyard training sessions, weight-lifting, parental support and money spent, all gone in a fizzle at the whim of a spineless college president.

Luckily, the Ad Hoc Review Committee decided the program didn’t have to go for good, but that was only after the team had lost its season, its coach, and most of its recruits in the wake of the rape case.

5. Duke lacrosse players become things—good things, even—after college.

From the Committee Report:

Alumni of the program apparently contribute to the community after college. 13 We received letters of support for the team from two recently graduated former players who are presently serving in Iraq. A remarkable number of alumni are volunteer coaches for their local lacrosse teams. Many are employed in prestigious positions in business, law, and medicine. 14 As evidenced by their support of the current team, alumni of the lacrosse program and their families are fiercely loyal to each other, to the lacrosse program, and to Duke.

Lacrosse players volunteer in schools around Durham during their tenures at Duke, and coach local teams after college. The “clannish” camaraderie of the Duke team, which mainstream media reports so bemoaned when this story broke, means they’re often inclined to give back to the sport and the communities that gave to them.

Many of them are privileged kids from well-to-do families, but they’re also hard-working, good kids from good families.

By all accounts, the lacrosse players are a cohesive, hard working, disciplined, and respectful athletic team. Their behavior on trips is described as exemplary. Players clean the team bus before disembarking. Airline personnel have complimented them for their behavior. They observe curfews. They obey the team's no alcohol rule before games. 11 They are respectful of people who serve the team, including bus drivers, airline personnel, trainers, the equipment manager, the team manager, and the groundskeeper.

So, there are just a few things you probably didn’t know about the Duke lacrosse team. They’re not a perfect bunch of guys, but they’re a very, very far cry from the monsters they’ve been made out to be. And, since the mainstream media has had little interest in telling you any of the good things about them for balance, I thought I’d tell you.

my 2 cents
Thanks we needed that.

I think it is also a good idea to point out nifong's timing - he made his announcement the Friday night before Christmas. As anyone who has watched 'The West Wing' (like me) knows, Friday is the day of the week when you give out news that you hope will be ignored by the MSM in their rush to get out for the weekend. It would be even more so on the Friday before the Christmas weekend.

I do not think it is unreasonable to conclude that nifong had that in mind in the timing of his announcement - he hoped that it would be generally ignored, but he would be able to say that he HAD made the announcement.

stupidity
These young men still acted stupidly. Good works, good grades and being polite doesn't override their stupidity. It's dreadful they had to face criminal charges, but I wish more athletic teams had their seasons cancelled when they act stupidly, but in our PC world you can judge anyone's immoral behavior or stupidity. These young men opened themselves up to this with their utterly tastelessness and stupidity.

The Prez
Good for you for pointing out the Presidents sell out of the team, coach and students. He should also pay a price. Im still wondering if this had been Coach K's basketball team, with sellout crowds and big money, would the season have been cancelled and would the accused be banned from campus before the investigation was complete? What a load of crap

spiritof76
I'm sorry, your comments are a little too vague for me to pick up. Could you restate your opinion as to their intellect? Thanks.

Are you kidding me?
spiritof76 can you please inform me of what missteps they made? What they hired a stripper for a party? OH MY GOD STOP THE PRESSES! I suppose that anyone who has ever hired adult entertainment could be accused of acting stupidly. You know the worst thing about this is that the guilty party that is getting off here is the stripper in question. She gets pissed off because of a racial slur thrown in her direction as she is leaving and so she tries to throw these guys under the bus. Maybe that was their stupidity.....hmmm yup that is worthy cancelling a season and firing a head coach. Man thank you for seeing how hurt feelings or feelings of being offended are worthy of ruining peoples athletic goals or in the coaches case his career.

Thanks Mary Katherine! We needed that.
.... Double standards abound in politics, else Bill Clinton and Putin would be joining Saddam on the scaffold.

.....My heart goes out to the lads and their outraged families. Wishing them a much happier New Year!

PC strikes again
Why is it that its always the gutless wonders that seem to make it into high places. Double especially true in our current education system. Its broken. Its overdue time to get the govt out of education. Only the market place and parental choice can return us to an education system that provides for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

This column's laughably irresponsible
Yeah, spacecadet, here are some missteps, having nothing to do with hiring any stripper:

- prior arrest records for 15 of the 47 players

- more than 20 arrests as a team statistic (I sure hope they led the league)

- inveterate disrespect/contempt for neighbors and community

Now, save for the thug who beat up the guy in D.C., most of the crimes weren't severe and were only acts of common athlete entitlement that merely shows these thugs could hold their own in the NBA or MLB.

But any decent conservative president would've sacked this team, which means the president did the right thing for the wrong reason.

But then, some of you liberals like mac and max here do go all squishy with a case like this.

Thirty-two percent of a roster has arrest records, and it's, "They're not a perfect bunch of guys, but . . ."

This is conservatism?

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

When did conservatism start lauding 32-percent arrest records?

And talk about deserving being shut down: For Ham (or anyone) to write a column this misleading, waxing on about these exemplary young lads, without even mentioning the arrest records (even if she wants to play the big liberal and discount them in light of the good stuff), whew, any good editor would call in this clueless sort for a talking-to.

I mean, we've all seen some irresponsible columns, left, right and center, but only laziness or dishonesty could've produced this dreck.

Guess laziness would be the preferable choice.

Misleading?
Too Much Caffeine-

Unless I woke up from a dream, the negatives you mentioned were exhaustively covered when the case first broke.

Mary Katherine simply wanted to show all the positives that the MSM didn't deem important enough to report (or, as I'm sure is the case, to even try to find out about!).

College students arrested for underage drinking? You're right -- this is clearly an example of "common athlete entitlement." When I went to college, the only students who drank before they were 21 were the rich, entitled, student-athletes! -- Yeah, right!

By the way, is it just laziness or utter disrespect that you would refer to a woman you've never met as "Ham" as opposed to "Miss Ham" or "Mary Katherine"?

Oh, thanks, SCC, for the "standards" . .
If you make the honor roll, it's OK to p--- in other people's yards!

And if you're an athlete who goes to practice for years, the community laws don't apply to you!

Thanks!

The new conservatism! (Not the kind I grew up with, but anyway . . .)

"Mary Katherine wanted to show all the positives . . ."

Yeah, well, that's not Ham's job.

(And all columnists/public figures are identifiable by surname - Will, Sowell, Coulter, etc. - unless you're in the NY Times, in which you get a Mr. or Ms. It's 21st-century America, not 15th-century England.)

By the way, it's great that Ham . . .
. . . brings to light positive things about the team, even when sprinkled with those pitiful arguments moaning about the AP's house descriptions.

But to ignore the arrests is a precise impersonation of the MSM and its omission of the good.

It's the same morality on the other side, and it depletes the trust factor.

spiritor76 & double C
Spirit, yep, they had a collective bout of stupidity. But guess what, I'm going out on a limb here with my statement. Most, not all, but most kids and young adults do stupid things when they're in highschool and in college. Hell, sometimes I still do stupid things and I'm well into my 5th decade. But then I suppose YOU have never done anything stupid in YOUR life, have you!

Double C - Which is it. 15 arrests or > 20 arrests? Disrespect for neighbors and community? How, by having a stripper or two at a party? My, my, how youth does do silly things.
As to sacking, no, any decent college president wouldn't have sacked the entire team, at least not until all the facts were in. Suspend the three arrested, yes. Disciplined the team and coach for a game or two, yes, but not sack the entire team.
Common atheletic entitlement? Sounds like a typical group of college kids. Yes, I know they are adults, but aside from doing their work at getting through college, most college students are still kids, not yet seasoned by the realities of post-college life.
You said, "Now, save for the thug who beat up the guy in D.C., most of the crimes weren't severe and were only acts of common athlete entitlement that merely shows these thugs could hold their own in the NBA or MLB." I agree, the dumba$$ who beat the guy up in DC is a thug, but the rest? Guess it doesn't take much in your world to be labeled a thug. I wonder how the rest of the rest of the UNC student body would fit your definition of a thug? My guess, a rather large %. Sounds to me like you have a tolerance problem.
If I sound like a squishy lib, sorry I gave you that impression. I'm rather conservative when it comes to most anything, but I do try to put things into perspective, and find that "most" of the things these kids did, don't rise to the level of thuggery, just immaturity.

If your kids get arrested for things most college kids get arrested for, and some in highschool as well, don't forget to think of them as thugs too.

Taproot

Did you read the last paragraph?
"So, there are just a few things you probably didn’t know about the Duke lacrosse team. They’re not a perfect bunch of guys, but they’re a very, very far cry from the monsters they’ve been made out to be. And, since the mainstream media has had little interest in telling you any of the good things about them for balance, I thought I’d tell you."

I think she pegs them perfectly -- somewhere between completely innocent angels and monsters deserving of national scorn. You'd be completely dishonest to disagree with that assessment.

BTW - I'm confused by your logic:

1. A large majority of college-students under the age of 21 participate in the activities that the lacrosse players have arrests for (drinking, public urination, loud parties, etc.). However, these players certainly are doing it out of "entitlement". In other words, most college students should get no sympathy when wrongfully being accused of a crime because they're all "criminals" anyway?

2. Most people I know address females respectfully. When you don't, it's okay, because it's the "21st Century"?

So, are we supposed to follow the crowd that is acting foolishly and disrespectfully, or not?

Who's being "stupid" here!
I agree with the others... these guys may have done something technically stupid, but give me a break. They certainly didn't deserve anything close to this treatment by Nifong.

Just another reason to hate lawyers!

double cappuccino...
You know that most people drink cappuccino from these little cups, and not those oversized coffee mugs, right?

I have a feeling that using your standards, the entire NCAA would be comprised of the University of Chicago Ping Pong Team, the Dartmouth Debating Club, and the Northwestern Chess Team. Maybe they could compete in a combined sport where they argue about how to bounce chess pieces over a ping pong table.

You don't think these guys got a bum rap? You are strict.

double cappucino (and taproot)
Actually, no one on the lax team "beat up" anybody in DC. There was a fight involving several people, one of whom was Collin Finnerty. He, however, did not hit anyone (someone else did). Instead, he apparently shouted something and waved his fists in the general direction of the complainant. Because of the circumstances under which these charges were dealt with (Finnerty and a couple of friends (not Duke students) had agreed to a diversion program in which the charges would be cleared from their records after community service and a certain period of good behavior; the judge deemed the NC charges sufficient evidence that these terms were not met and revoked the agreement for Finnerty but not for the others), the underlying facts were never aired in any detail, though it appears unlikely the incident was as "unprovoked" as the press suggested, and the DC prosecutors concluded that it was not, in fact, a "hate crime" or "gay-bashing incident" as the press also suggested, though some name calling was involved (among other things, the complainant was not, in fact, gay).
So, again--some evidence of stupid behavior--but not of a beating by a "thug."

Nifong
has been charged with misconduct by the NC bar I believe, not exactly certain, its breaking news. Its about time. This quite common New Left carried away prosecutor has done the nation a major favor.

The shame of it all is manifold..vast amounts of money, both private and public were wasted, not to mention reputations. The good news is that PC foolishness was exposed and Duke officials and professors have made fools of themselves publicly.

Also, hopefully the public will be educated as to just what PC is..and decisions about just where to send their children to school will hang in the balance.

Campus New Left hardliners, masked as "anti-war" protesters when what they are is anti-American and anti-capitalist, exposed themselves in this travesty and, my hope is, will suffer the consequences.

I might be dreaming. The radicals that brayed the tired mantras of bigotry and hate crime get away with that trash continually. Im not holding my breath waiting for a national discussion of universities controlled by the most extreme element in the country who shape soft minds daily with their diatribe.

I wish a full recovery for the boys caught in this madness.

my 2 cents
....I think these young men got a very bad rap. Living in the area, I know how hard they were hit and beat up on(not literally) and they are still being targeted and smeared in the area. Did they make a bad choices? Yes they did. Are they the scum of Duke? Certainly not. As has been stated, young men AND women of their age make bad dicisions like this all the time. It doesn't matter what school you go to or what sport, if any, you play. Most kids 18-23 are still immature, away from adult supervision and adults rules for the first time and are learning from their mistakes. Plus, how many times does something like what has been "alleged" actually happen by non-college and non-atheletes and never get reported on or even heard of? just a thought.

For double cappuccino, SCC was correct in pointing out your lack of respect for Ms. Ham. It's poeple like you who see no problem in not showing any kind of respect for someone whom you do not know that has contributed to the slow decline of our society. I'm sure that you go out and would never hold the door for anyone, tell an elder to "shut up or move" or not even acknowledge them just because of their age. You probably don't even respect yourself, which would explain you disdain for niceties. Maybe someday you'll grow too!!

animalgirl
You don't think that cancelling the whole season for the whole team is excessive, based on the fact that only three of forty seven were accused by someone whose story was never the same twice? I wonder, do you always spank the baby with an axe?

double cappuccino
She said up front she was going to talk about the other side of the coin, the facts that haven't been repeatedly broadcast. Slamming her for not including a rehash of everything we've heard over and over and frakin' over again makes zero sense.

animalgirlisback
Yes, standards are important and if UGA is a strict school then good for them. If everyone who'd been drinking underage had been expelled I wouldn't blink, and if that didn't leave enough of a team left to compete, well: darn.

Of course, that wasn't what happened, was it? What happened was that the innocent were punished along with the guilty, and that's certainly a "bum rap."

Diabolical D.A.'s. Great expression. If you know any police officers well enough for them to trust you to keep your mouth shut, bring up the subject of D.A. malfeasance. Not that there are not 'way too many bend the rules cops, but D.A.'s are given incredible power. As an officer acquaintance (he didn't trust me) answered when i asked that question "If you could decide who went to trial and who was released based only upon your evaluation, do you think you could pervert this power to your advantage?".

Duke Lacrosse
As a mom of 4 lacrosse players - one college, two high school, one middle school - 3 boys, one girl, I am immersed in the lacrosse culture. I am also immersed in the college student/teenager culture. Unless you are the parent of a teenager/college student, or have been a parent of a teenager/college student, I do not respect your authority to comment on their character. Teenagers/college students do very dumb things - ALL OF THEM. If you think that some don't, then you have your head in the sand. Some are dumber than others. This doesn't make it right. Making mistakes and dumb decisions is a part of growing up, and a part of figuring out what is right and what is wrong. When they are wrong, they definitely should be punished, but to have cancelled the entire Duke season and to have pressured the coach to resign was an impulsive decision by a scared and frantic administration. It is absolutely no different than cancelling recess for the entire kindergarten class when a few students can't sit still during circle time.

I know from personal experience the passion, dedication and hard work that goes into fulfilling the dream of being a college lacrosse player - male or female. I know how impulsive and dumb teenagers and college students can be and are. Very poor decisions were made by only some of the Duke lacrosse team members, and it is entirely appropriate to investigate and reprimand those players. BUT, to condemn the entire team, and to immediately assume the accused were thugs is immature and cowardly. To put the accused's families through endless and blasphemous scrutiny displays disrespect and repulsive arrogance towards these families. These parents, wealthy or not, have worked hard to encouraged their children to work hard, and to follow their passion for lacrosse to an exemplary educational institution. They are NO different than any other parent of any other Duke student in their wishes for their children. These players are no different than any other citizen accused of a crime - Innocent Until Proven Guilty.

Underage drinking is against the law. Hiring strippers, I assume, is not a crime, but, yes, shows very poor judgement. Any of the lacrosse players involved in the party should be reprimanded appropriately for their involvement as it applys to State Law and to Duke University's code of conduct.

I will be the skunk at the picnic here, and say that the real criminal is the accuser, and her accomplice is Nifong. She unfortunately has issues and problems so enormous, that needlessly ruining the lives of three boys and their families , and a whole community of other Duke lacrosse players, their coach, and Duke University in general was more important than accepting and facing the truth. Causing overwhelming ill will and accusations between Durham citizens, Duke and North Carolina State, and incurring needless enormous expense (literal and figurative) to her community is also criminal. She really needs help, and my hope is that she gets it. Nifong really needs help, and I hope he gets it...after he has been disbarred.

Duke Lacrosse
Correction for my previous post - I should have said North Carolina Central University, not North Carolina State. We all make mistakes...

College behavior
People can't comment on the behavior of teenagers/college-age kids unless they are or have been parents? That is silly. Essentially everyone here has been a teenager (maybe we have some young posters); they have had friends as teenagers and college students, and can comment on their actions as a class.

Personally, I find drinking to be one of the silliest things that takes place at university. It is illegal and debilitating, and yet it is rampant. These students happened to get the punishment they deserved for engaging in illegal activity and representing their school poorly, although many others do not receive their just punishment.

The Duke President did the right thing for the wrong season. Nifong was wrong to prematurely charge the students and to politicize the case. The stripper is wrong to lie and mislead people. But just because everyone else has acted wrongly doesn't make the remaining party the right one. The Duke students' actions were specious in holding a party with "adult entertainment" and underage drinking. This, besides its illegality, reflects poorly on Duke, and the suspension of the season was a just punishment.

Thanks to the others here who are making this point. The conservatives who choose to ignore standards in this case and brush it off as "teenage stupdity" do a disservice to students who are responsible citizens and play by the rules. Too many students escape punishment for their irresponsibility.

Until the prosecution..
of the "stripper"/prostitute/loose woman, D.A. Nifong, and the Duke President this case will not be complete. Of course nothing will happen to these 3, as PC rules would not permit it. But they should each by my logic do some long/hard time.

spiritof76
If drunken stupidity is a crime, why isn't the entire Kennedy Clan in prison?

If drunken stupidity leading to death is a crime, why is Ted Kennedy in the Senate?

I wonder if y'all would have this righteously uplifted nose in the air attitude if the three accused players were named Kennedy? Or if perhaps they were the children of movie stars, or were movie stars themselves?

No, I don't think you would.

P.S. If drunken stupidity were a crime, about 3/4 of the students in my small Bible college in the Sixties would have gone to jail -- most particularly since the college was located in a dry county. Most of us grew up instead to be solid citizens, some becoming pastors and Bishops in the Protestant Church and many fighting with honour in Vietnam. The important thing about making stupid mistakes when young is that if you are smart it prevents you from making stupid mistakes when you're an adult. It also makes you more understanding of what kinds of stupid mistakes are indictable offences and what are not.

DKH
I don't drink and don't condone it for youngsters, but that said, your post is total liberal foolishness!

It was not okay for Richard Brodhead to end the entire lacrosse season for the alleged actions of 3 of 47 team members. That was a gutless decison made to appease the leftist radicals that immediately judged the players guilty...based simply on an accusation.

I seem also to remember a certain Duke basketball player (Greg Newton) that was kicked off the team a few years back for cheating on an exam, but was reinstated the next semester because the team needed a big man. I also remember JJ Redick being arrested and charged with DUI after trying to avoid a sobriety checkpoint manned by the Durham Police and NC State Troopers. So according to your logic, the entire basketball season should have been cancelled due to the academic fraud of one preson or the DUI charges of another? That is the definition of throwing the baby out with the bath water! What's next, Duke suspending the football season if a player gets caught drinking off campus...since it "reflects poorly on Duke"?

This is not about conservatives rejecting sandards, this about the abuse of power by a race baiting, publicity seeking proscutor. It is about the bearing of false witness by a stripper for some unknown reason that has devasted the lives of 3 young men and their families and has sown racial discord in the city of Durham.

And if you were to hold your liberal heroes to your "standards" then the entire Kennedy clan should be banned from politics since Joe Kennedy was basically a moonshiner during Prohibition, no Democrat should be allowed to hold office ever again because of their founding and early protection of the KKK, and their stands AGAINST the civil rights laws of the 1960s. We could go on and on, but you should be getting the point now...it is not fair to punish everyone for the actions of a few. And only the truly guilty should be punished at that...not those that are accused on the words of one unreliable witness.

Spiritof76
Spiritof76, OMG, the use of the word Stupidity five times in four sentences says it all, IMHO you applied it to the wrong people.

Duke Lacrosse
I have been a coach and a teacher for many years. The most important part of any athletic endeavor is to make them better people. The general role of the administrators and coaches in any problem with these teams or individuals on any of these teams is to believe them to be innocent until proven guilty (sounds familiar, does it not?). As a coach and a parent, I would not send my son (a good football athlete) to Duke until the administration is purged of those administrators who sacrificed those in their charge on the altar of policical correctness. A school that believes the worst of its own without any cause (other than their own social apologistic liberalism and anti-white bigotry) do not deserve to be and can not be trusted to be in charge of our youth.

schultbear
You have certainly narrowed the choices available for continuing yur son's education. Hillside? Grove City? Maybe Texas A & M.??

DKH
Being a teenager/college student today is completely different than it was for most of us writing here. When I was in college, the drinking age was 18, the organization MADD did not exist, and as long as you applied to college - you got into one. In addition, I would bet it was nearly impossible to hire a stripper unless you were very saavy.

Today, the drinking age is 21, teenagers are emphatically taught the "wrongs" of underage drinking, and the college application process is for most students, the most stressful and unfair process they will ever experience. If you want to see a naked lady dancing, all you have to do is find a computer and Google "naked lady dancing." (Or worse.) It is a different world. Access to everything is easier, and consequences are greater; therefore, I again, think it inappropriate to comment on a teenager/college students character unless you currently or recently have had one.

All the boys at the party should have suffered some ramifications for their behavior, and I wonder if there is an Athletic Code of Conduct?
To have cancelled the entire season for all is a complete overreaction.

If I read one more time that wealthy parents don't know how to parent, and spoil their children rotten, I'm going to vomit. There are good and bad parents at ALL economic levels, in all cultures, and I have witnessed plenty of both. The boys admitted to their mistakes of underage drinking and hiring a stripper, and don't deny it. I personally think that the three accused players (and their parents) have presented themselves to the public respectfully and maturely in an obviously painful and unjust situation. That's good parenting.

College drinking
As I sip a cold one,I recall that drinking and college have gone together like liberalism and gullibility since the two have existed. I attended a small private university where frats were required to obtain written permission from the Dean any time they wanted to serve alcohol. Nevertheless, you had to be careful walking around campus on weekends to be sure you didn't step on someone's hands.
Our legal system is supposed to contain many protections for the accused. The defendants in this case were denied most of them, most importantly the presumption of innocence and the right to a speedy trial. The well documented malfeasance of the DA is frustrating to the concept of justice. The most unfortunate result of this case is that all of the media and legal wrangling will only discourage victims of real sex abuse crimes to come forward and pursue the prosecution of real criminals.

A couple brief comments
1. The three arrested students seem to have got a bad rap. They should have the right to sue somebody and win something if they were falsely accused. Imagine the life-long damage this has done to them and their families.

2. If the accuser made false charges, she should be prosecuted. There is mounting evidence that she was living a completely irresponsible lifestyle. And Nifong also should face justice if he has acted illegally.

3. The president of Duke has little alternative but to suspend the rest of the lacrosse season at the time he took that action.

4. I hope the lacrosse team at Duke and other jocks in schools and colleges everywhere have learned a lesson. Yes, teens and collegians make mistakes, but perhaps this Duke episode will help teach some of them to be more responsible, drink less (and less of them underage, which is breaking the law), have more respect for neighbors, avoid outrageous racist comments altogether, and demonstrate greater caution and wisdom when it comes to forms of entertainment.

5. Duke is a great university. The stupid actions of a few should not in any way injure its reputation.

Happy New Year!

How about some common sense here?
Nifong mishandled this case from the beginning and used this non-case to appeal to the black voters in his upcoming election. Unfortunately it worked. Regardless of how these guys may have behaved in the past, if you are going to arrest and put them through a trial, you should be able to show that they at least were present at the time of the alleged rape. Nifong couldn't present that evidence and in fact knew they were not there. Worse than that, he ignored that info until the election was over. His behavior was as reprehensible as his accusations of the Lacrosse players. Hopefully, he will be disbarred. Anything less will cast doubts of getting a fair trial in North Carolina.

Duke University itself was wrong in jumping the gun also. They should have waited for the trial to dictate whatever actions they would ultimately take. There was no need to destroy lives and a program, which may have been flawed, but did not deserve the punishment the University dealt until all the facts were in.

Flagwaver, others
Heh, because I support responsibility and rule of law I'm a liberal? I think liberal standards of punishment are responsible for the behavioral decay at colleges. Does this apply to the Kennedys equally as to the rest of the population? Of course, because I believe in equality before the law, too.

Were the Duke lacrosse players denied that equality? Yes, they were convicted in public before they were in court.

I will grant that ending the whole season for the entire team is harsh. I merely mean that those players who have had alcohol underage should be held responsible for their actions. If underage drinking is as prevalent at Duke as at my university, that might leave two or three players. For them it would certainly be unjust to end the season; they may continue and play it out if they like.

I can't respond to your comments about my "liberal heroes" since they aren't anywhere close to true. Anyone, including the Kennedys, who acts irresponsibly should be held accountable.

momofmany:

I am acquainted with the state of universities today, being that I am a student at one. It is a large public university, certainly not difficult to get into. I also appreciate that it is different than the way it used to be. That doesn't excuse anyone from responsibility for their actions. Cancelling the entire season was unjust as a punishment for merely being accused by the stripper.

Would it have been unjust if the President found that every student on the team was guilty of underage drinking? No. Maybe college means making stupid decisions for some people. But it certainly doesn't mean freedom from accountability for them.

Lottery
The accuser in this case decided she was going to win her version of the lottery, and Nifong decided he liked the cameras.

It backfired on both of them.

I was absolutely happy
to learn that the State Bar has brought ethic charges against the prosecutor. With all of the facts out there of the actual charge (not whether the boys were immoral or stupid or had previous records) but the actual charges of rape, and the facts nohow supporting these charges, I was feeling increasingly horrified that this could be happening within our judicial system. I was wondering where the parents of the boys could go in dealing with the injustice being perpetrated. I hope also that the justice department is involved.

What Happened??
No body wants to say it straight-out so I will be Politically Incorrect enough to say it.

The Accuser wanted to file a law suit and win a big settlement. The D.A. wanted to use this high-profile case to get re-elected. The Main Steam Media (MSM) wanted to use the "Bashing of the Wealthy" as a cause for selling their newspapers and Television programs and lining up with their Captains, the Democrats. The School Officials wanted to hide from ANY and ALL MSM Attention. (“Sacrifice a Virgin and save us from King Kong.”)

This Scenario could have very easily been used for the story-line in "Bonfire of the Vanities."

As far as these College Players paying this extremely high price, I am reminded of when Bill Clinton was running for President and the subject was brought up regarding his Treasonous Demonstrations on foreign soil, against his own Country during his "draft-dodging days." He said, "I was just a lad of only 23." (I guess these boys should have been Democrats.)

As to accusing Nifong of lying, misrepresenting the facts, and hiding the truth; - - - he’s a Lawyer, what did you expect?

2 more cents

All,

I think if you do some research, you will find that Colin Finnerty was charged with assault which is the verbal and threatening motions, he was not cahrged with battery.

The photo lineup was flawed, have heard retired police officers say it was invalid. No fakes, like a cop or a judge in the line up . With no body but lacrosse players, who else was she going to pick out, Santa Claus?

OJ got off on stronger evidence than Nifon has shown.

Nifong on ethics charges
Yes, a quick google finds a number of articles on the ethics charges filed against the DA in the case. Of course, just has been stated here regarding the Lacrosse players, we should refrain from convicting him prior to his day in court. But, given all that we've seen him do, let's hope that the facts are proven against him and that he gets what he deserves...

Ethics
Were the same "rules of accountability" applied to the Duke Lacrosse players that were applied to Clinton, the Lacrosse players would be made public heros by the MSM & Nifon would be bastardized by the MSM.

Mr. Nifong

Mr. (and that is using the prefix politely) fits this prfectly. I hope this offends no one, because it is not pollitically correct in this century. That in it self is BS.

If I were King

1. No lawyer would be allowed to run for any political office.
2. No lawyer could be appointed as a judge.
3. A judge who lets a criminal off on a technicality or other scheme must receive the same sentence that the criminal gets if he is caught and tried again.
4. The word “alleged” cannot be used when there is video or confession of a crime.
5. Before a new law is passed it must be accompanied by the repeal of 10 laws.
6. No child can graduate without passing a test on the Constitution.
7. No college can issue a degree of any sort without passing that same test.
8. The Gettysburg Address must be memorized by any office holder, city thru federal.
9. Every citizen must recite the Ten Commandments in English before voting.
These tenets can only be added to, not changed or deleted.

Ed

Doc
You have my vote for King just for your 9 points. Well said, tis a pity t'will ne'er come to pass. Too many lawyers, from local to Supremes to many Congressmen, to allow something like that that would take away so much of their power.
Well said, very well said.
Taproot

Get Nifong
If you don't like what the DA did, send a letter to the NC Supreme Court whom I believe has authority to yank his misused license to practice.

Jocks get away with murder
WOW! A DA makes a mistake and won't admit it.

What's this world coming to?

Our prisons are full of innocent poor convicted by a DA who was interested in putting a political feather in his bonnet.

But please spare me the tears for the "innocent" jocks. As for the graduating rate for the Duke Lacrosse Team? That's as phony as the accuser's story.

Our sports "heroes" are the closest thing we have to royalty, and this myth about the amateur player is just that - a myth.

Roy
The stupid actions of a few SHOULD trash the reputation of Duke when one of the few is the president of the university. PC gutlessness.

stupid actions of a few
5. Duke is a great university. The stupid actions of a few should not in any way injure its reputation.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 88 professors who signed the letter thanking campus protesters for harrassing the lacross team.

A Fine Mess
What reason does Nifong have for pursuing the non-case that he has against the Duke students?

It's easy, and any honest (?) Trial Lawyer or anyone who has ever been caught up in the justice system as it has evolved in this country, can tell you; He is using character assassination coupled with extreme financial pressure to force a plea to anything, so even if all he can claim is that the students were guilty of spitting on the sidewalk, then HIS pursuing the case was the only thing that brought justice to bear. He is a slimy whoring trial lawyer, and as such, a credit to his profession. No insult to working girls intended. Further, I believe that I heard it was costing each family 80,000.00 a month to defend against this travesty. The defense attorneys should be ashamed of that. The authorities at the city, the county, the university, the state and the federal agencies and the Media for their involvement or lack of involvement in this case need to look at their actions. It's simply maddening.

One further thing on my mind is: where is Jesse Jackson and his ilk now that it's clear that an injustice is being perpetrated? The woodwork shouldn't harbor them all, or have we come to the point that innocent white folk can't be victims? Is the lesson from this that when you hire a striper make sure that you get a white male?

And to those who say the kids deserved what they are getting because the had some drinks and hired a stripper; get bland over yourself and look back to some of your mistakes when you were coming up. My goodness isn't the price a 99% too high for what they did.

What the hell has happened to us?

gamecock1969- "Jocks get away
with murder WOW! A DA makes a mistake and won't admit it... please spare me the tears for the "innocent" jocks."
********************************

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't feel sorry for the jocks so much as that I am outraged that a jerk of a DA can make an example of these boys to promote his career.

Regarding the actions of these boys, hiring a stripper for their party, I put the fault at the feet of their parents for not teaching them to steer clear of unsavory immoral women.

I fault the government that fails to inforce or institute standards in the entertainment industry, where young people have grown to think that "hoe-ish" behavior among women is normal.

I fault the local governments for permitting "Adult Entertainment" businesses that hire out strippers to parties. These are not in the mode of Gypsy Rose Lee, who paraded around in a gown and took off a glove, but girls who bunp and grind, give lap dances and put whipped cream on their bodies to be sampled in exchange for tips.

I am also faulting a government that looks the other way when MTV and worse channels deliberately corrupt the morals of young women, so that a young single mother thinks it is perfectly acceptable to take of her clothing for a bunch of hornie college boys, and somehow imagines that she will emerge untouched.

I am faulting the American people for standing by in their TV-induced stupor while the character of our once brilliant country swirls the bowl and quietly slides into the sewer.

Wasn't the stripper
previously involved in a false rape accusation?

Three things need to happen in 2007:

1. Nifong: goes to prison

2. Stripper: goes to prison

3. Duke U./Raleigh-Durham/State of NC: Billion dollar judgement awarded to the plaintiffs (the Duke lacrosse players.

Doc: to add to your list
I would have the young men in colleges be taught Proverbs 5:

"...the lips of an adultress drip honey and smoother than oil is her speech but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps take hold of Sheol, she does not ponder the path of life; her ways are unstable and she does not know it.

Now then, my sons... keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house or you will give your vigor to others and your years to the cruel one...

Drink water from your own cistern and fresh water from your own well... let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth... be exhilarated always with her love.

For why should you my son, be exhilarated with an adultress..?

He will die FOR LACK OF INSTRUCTION AND IN THE GREATNESS OF HIS FOLLY GO ASTRAY."

NIFONG IS A CROOK!
D.A. Nifong saw an opportunity to get some publicity (and obtain all the black votes) just before an election. He did not care whose or how many lives he ruined along the way. A "lovely young lady's lies cost the jobs, careers and reputations of high officials at Duke University as well as the involved Lacrosse players. I say again, a simply lovely young lady lies! Nifong and the involved lovely young lady should be charged with crimes and put in prison for long periods of time. Let them see what it is like to ruin other peoples lives because of personal hate for another race and political gains. He won the election and she acused everyone of rape except the lone black guy in that house. It seems obvious to me what occurred in both instances.

More for Doc's list
Make young men memorize from Proverbs 6 and 7 as well:

"...keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adultress. Do not desire her beauty in your heart, nor let her capture you with her eyelids.

FOR ON ACCOUNT OF A HARLOT ONE IS REDUCED TO A LOAF OF BREAD..."

And

"My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments... that they may keep you from an adultress..

I saw among the naive... a young lacking sense passing the street near her corner.. and behold a woman comes to meet him dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart... 'Come let us drink our fill of love until the morning...' with her many persuasions she entises him; with her flattering lips she seduces him.

Suddenly he follows her as and ox goes to slaughter."

Aptly named spacecadet makes my point
spacecadet writes: Friday, December, 29, 2006 11:18 AM

spiritof76 can you please inform me of what missteps they made? What they hired a stripper for a party? OH MY GOD STOP THE PRESSES! I suppose that anyone who has ever hired adult entertainment could be accused of acting stupidly..."
************************************************

This is an example of how successful the Leftie Losers have been in gradually corrupting our culture, so that we no longer know right from wrong!

I was just discussing this incrimental corruption of our society with another blogger in the comments under my latest post called: "Does Name Calling Have a Purpose?"

The latest ploy of the Left is to put a stop to "verbal bullying" in schools. Sounds nice at first, until you realize that they are going to stop kids from telling a boy with a dress; "dude, that looks gay!"

The Left has been so successful in this gradual corrupting of our morals that Space Cadet thinks it is no big deal to bring into your home an immoral woman who makes her living by taking off her clothing in front of men.

And may I say, I am hearing also that a lot of people think it is also mean of us to judge this "hoe" who behaves in such a slatternly manner.

At the very least, these guys might have expected to have had the gold teeth missing from their mouths and the cash from their wallets when she departed. Instead, she tried to steal their reputations, their fortunes, and their futures.

If this is not stupidity, what is?

Why thank ya Mountain Rose :)
I appreciate your concern for my eternal soul.....I am rather curious, you aren't calling me a lefty loser are you? I mean really that would just be a bit premature don't you think? I understand your point but you TOTALLY missed mine.

About time
It's about time that a legal person on a personal vendetta get stopped. True justice has to be Objective, impartial, fair, investigative, unbiased, and true to our Constitutional principles.

Don't lose sight of the crime
While many of the above comments are political, stupid or both, we cannot lose sight that the only real evident crime is the one committed by Nifong who put his welfare above the welfare of the people he took an oath to protect.

Most of the false reporting, the racist response from so-called political activist groups and the personal torment suffered by those falsely accused wouldn't have happened had Nifong performed his duties honestly.

We may never know what actually happened. We do know that the SP media wouldn't have had a leg to stand on had Nifong not acted criminally and unethically.

I'm not absolving the kids from their behavior although we'd have to indict tens of thousands of college kids for doing the same thing - every day. And people have to let go of name calling. It's never going to stop and everyone does it. No one can ever offend you - you can only take offense, which you will do if you don't know who you are. I learned "Sticks & stones..." in kindergarden. Grow up and get a life people!

We have enough problems without focusing on innappropriate language. The key is to stop watching the news or reading the newspapers. Their advertisers will eventually abandon them.

In the meantime, don't believe the media - they'll only ruin your day.

Roy
posted that, " Duke is a great university. The stupid actions of a few should not in any way injure its reputation. "

Roy, the president of Duke U. acted precipitously in firing the lacrosse coach and cancelling the lacrosse season.

He didn't wait for the evidence, he just assumed that the "rich" white lacrosse players were guilty and decided to be "politically correct".

If Duke U. had done the same thing to black players accused of raping a white girl, there'd be a deafening outroar against Duke.

Because it's white guys who are accused, it's no problem for the politically correct crowd.

Duke U. needs to pay a few hundred million for its prejudicial mistakes and completely unethical conduct. Duke U. is tremendously wealthy and can afford to pay a huge judgment.

Zazspo
Shouldn't there be Outrage? It seems to be missing.

spacecadet- It seemed to me
that you were saying that it was no big deal that these boys hired "adult entertainment" to come and dance at their party.

But I can guarantee you that this would not have been considered "no big deal" prior to the Leftist take over of the culture.

If you call yourself a conservative, I consider it even sadder that you don't see the foolishness of young men who choose to spend time with trashy women.

The fact that they could not forsee any consequenses shows how much times have changed. I think the consequences of what they did are now evident, and point out why we adhered to standards in the past.

Methuselah
There's so much to be upset about these days it's hard to know where to start and with whom. Our Constitution is a plaything for the legal profession. The Constitution has become of attorneys, by attorneys and for attorneys.

Our politicians are too worried about the people whose money (both sides) put them in office. And the two far ends of our political spectrum seem to pull the middle (and most Americans seem to be there) to one side or the other.

There are more sick people running around craving attention claiming that God, Santa Claus, etc are somehow offending them and instead of telling them to get over it, we pass laws and/or upset everyone else - which is what these thumbsuckers really wanted in the first place.

The Duke case is a perfect example. Worse, the same people who claim some legal manuevering is more important than ovbvious guilt are the first ones judging this case without facts.

Interesting, isn't it - if you asked our founding fathers what a defense attorneys job was, they'd tell you it's to see that their rights were upheld. Ask any defense attorney what their job is and they'll tell you it's to get their client off. It doesn't matter if the party is guilty or not. They'll use some trite phrase like - it's what you can prove.

BS!

Here's another. It's easier to speak English in hotels in Europe that it is here. English is the official language of busines in every country in the world but we have to change to please those who don't want to learn it. Please!

I got more Methuslah. So where and to whom do we begin sending our outrage. Make no mistake, I love people but have lost my faith in them. 50% of the people in this country act like morons and yet they vote.

Geez, my fingers are getting tired.

Methuselah
outrage redux

You're right. I think what Nifong did is the worst type of crime. Hang him.

Mountain Rose
I don't think that anyone here is sayng that these young men made no mistakes, or that they are pure as the driven snow. What spacecadet and others, including me, are trying to get across is that this is beyond some moral issue; it is about the rule of law.

Most of us can agree that underage drinking is bad and that hiring a stripper for a party may not be the most intelligent thing to do, but that is no jstification for the lodging of false rape allegations and a politically motivated prosecution. Add to that te fact that the DA withheld DNA evidence that would prove that neither of the 3 men had any type of sexual conduct with the "victim" and that the police used a line up of only the Duke lacrosse players to get an ID, and you have a clear case of justice being miscarried here.

And as a Christian, I agree that we have a responsibility to teach our children how to act; however, as a parent and as a person that did some rebellious things as a young man, I realize that what I teach my kids today will not necessarily be what they use to make decisions in the future. There is going to come a time when they have to make their own decisions and deal with the consequences of same.

Further, i do not see that it was a foregone conclusion that the hiring of a stripper would lead to false rape charges being filed, or that an unethical DA would use the charges to win an election! As much as it may gall you, plemty of people go to strip clubs, hire strippers for bachelor parties, and some even frequent prostitutes. While that may say something about their moral character, it is not a legal justification for having your reputation forever tarnished by one bad decision you make. It seems to me that in your religious and moral zeal, you are rushing to judge these young men forever on the basis of ACCUSATIONS made about one night of their lives; how fair is it of you to treat these people as though all they are is the worst thing they were ever ACCUSED of doing? Should we then lodge and accusation against you and judge you to be guilty of it...then decree that you are no better than what we say you are, regardless of the truth of the ACCUSATION?

Finally, please do not go around casting aspersions on the conserative bona fides of those that happen to hold a different opinion than yours. A "real" conservative does not have to agree with everything that other conservatives say...we leave that type of lockstep ideology to the left. Just because spacecadet or I happen to see this situation differently from you does not mean that we are not conservatives, it just means that we don't agree with you. So please get over yourself, I don't remember anyone making Mountain Rose the arbiter of true conservatism: how would you like it if I said you weren't a conservative because you disagree with my opinon?

In re: DKH
I am sorry if you are not a liberal and I cast you as one, but your post simply had an all too liberal feel to it! Please do not take offense at my labeling you a liberal; I have read some of your posts on other topics and can see that you are not a liberal, so I apologize for calling you that awful name.

That said, I stand by my basic message in my original response to you, especially about the way the University treated the team. I played basketball in high school and we had a couple of players get suspended for smoking weed after school. It was against the law of course, and it was against school and team rules, so they were dealt with by the rules set up to govern that type of situation. The point is, THEY were guilty so THEY were punished...not all of us; your logic would mean that we should have all lost a season and our coach his job for the actions of a couple of guys doing something wrong. That is not at all fair...and since there are no laws prohibiting the hiring of strippers, they should not have been punished for that, either! The thing to do in tis situation is to seperate the moral case from the legal case; if you do that then you will probably find that Duke was totally wrog in costing all of the players a seeason on the strength of one false rape accusation!

Zazspo
Slowly.

All of the above
To all of the above: You may be in a contest to see who is the most conservative, but everyone is acting like a liberal, IMO, because no one has called for the false accuser to be brought to justice. Conservatives have been so influenced by feminism that they cannot see a woman as "bad" even when her false accusations result in three people almost going to prison falsely (not to mention all the other life wreckage).

Or maybe this is Christian chivalry shining through. Either way, not prosecuting the false accuser leaves the door wide open for women to do this -- and apparently false rape accusations happen far more frequently than the feminist media would have us believe.

Conservatives need to let go of their ingrained pop culture feminism and misplaced chivalry and hold lying women to task -- as would have been done in other more logical times.

Denny
More than 1 person has said charge her with filing false police report. That would fall under the heading of justice.
