Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Does the mainstream press ever wonder why conservatives distrust them so much?

If so, they need look no further than the “fauxtography” scandals of the last couple of weeks. Conservative bloggers have been hard at work sniffing out suspected fakery and staging in the photos sent back on the newswires from the Israel/Hezbollah conflict, and the investigation got pretty smelly.

First, there was Reutersgate, in which the international news organization had to pull a photo and fire a freelance photographer because he clumsily Photoshopped thicker smoke into the skyline of Beirut.

This incident got bloggers wondering what other photographic evidence of Israeli aggression had been Photoshopped or staged into existence, and just how complicit the news media was in the fakery. They came up with a photo by the same Reuters photographer, in which he had added flares to a photograph of an Israeli plane, and called them missiles.

But that was just the beginning. There was Green Helmet Guy, who seemed to be ever-present at the sites of Israeli “atrocities,” always making the most of the evidence of civilian casualties. He even played director to international news crews and photographers, showing them how to get the best shots of Lebanese casualties.

Then there was the “Passion of the Toys,” in which brand-new toys—poignant symbols of childhood innocence—seemed to keep popping up, perfectly framed by the destruction of war, yet strangely unscathed by it.

Oh, but it doesn’t stop there. Later came the “unluckiest multiple home owner in Lebanon,” photographed on several occasions, weeping in front of her several homes, bombed by several Israeli airstrikes. Then, we have the New York Times’ pieta, in which a rescue worker was carelessly identified as a victim of an airstrike when, in fact, he had been injured while working in the area. And, the flaming tire atrocity. And, the time Hezbollah bombed an Israeli ship in Australia.

Finally, this week, there was the ambulance attack that maybe wasn’t. There’s strong evidence to suggest that the two ambulances allegedly hit by Israeli airstrikes on July 23 were not exactly pulverized by missiles, as we were led to believe.

Reuters fired its fake photographer, which was the correct response to such deception. But, beyond that, there has not been much comeuppance for photographers and reporters involved in airbrushed, faked, and staged news.

The mainstream media’s response to the allegations from blogs has been more along the lines of Greg Mitchell’s, editor of Editor & Publisher, a trade magazine whose mission it is to cover “all aspects of the North American newspaper industry, including business, newsroom, advertising, circulation, marketing, technology, online and syndicates.”

Mitchell’s response to accusations from bloggers—instead of answering the charges and refuting evidence—was to get very defensive, claim that “rightwing bloggers” were only attempting to smear photojournalists as a group, and then proceed to smear rightwing bloggers as a group for daring to point out the dishonesty of some photojournalists, and raise questions about how business is conducted in the Middle East.

You can see Mitchell’s response to the accusations, here and here. You can see the deconstruction thereof, here and here. All are worth a read to really understand how the mainstream media deals with accusations of fraud, and how cavalierly it tosses aside some of its most avid consumers’ concerns. Here’s a typical paragraph from one of Mitchell’s pieces:

Time does not permit a point by point documentation of the dozens of ludicrous, or at least completely unproven, examples of doctored or staged or otherwise manipulated photos on the Web. Have no fear, I will soon return to this subject, but in the meantime, feel free to plunge into the blogosphere. If you go deeply enough, you may feel you are back on the Grassy Knoll. One of the most-linked sites in this controversy, EU Referendum, goes so far as to suggest that a kind of Hollywood "film-set" was improvised at the site of the Qana killings "for the benefit of both Hezbollah and the media."

I would highly recommend you go through the links I’ve listed above and decide for yourself whether the accusations are “ludicrous,” particularly the video of a Hollywood film-set improvised at the site of the Qana killing, “for the benefit of both Hezbollah and the media.”

Instead of addressing concerns and refuting evidence, Mitchell calls bloggers a bunch of Grassy Knoll-ers intent on discrediting “the media as a whole.” This is not the way to win trust with your audience.

Mitchell then went on to discredit himself within the space of just a couple hours.

On Friday, the Confederate Yankee blog brought attention to a column Mitchell had written in 2003, in which he confessed to making up news as a young reporter. He had been sent out to do a story on Niagara Falls, and found himself unable to talk to tourists to get quotes. So, he sat on a bench and made the quotes up. He confessed his journalistic sin in the wake of the Jayson Blair scandal.

Many other blogs picked up on the 2003 column, suggesting that Mitchell might be sympathetic to faked news because he himself had been a faker.

Several hours after Confederate Yankee’s post went up, that blogger noticed the text of the 2003 article had been changed. The lede had gone from this:

Since the press seems to be in full-disclosure mode these days, I want to finally come clean. Back when I worked for the Niagara Falls (N.Y.) Gazette (now the Niagara Gazette), our city editor asked me to find out what tourists thought about an amazing local event: Engineers had literally “turned off” the famous cataracts, diverting water so they could shore up the crumbling rock face. Were visitors disappointed to find a trickle rather than a roar? Or thrilled about witnessing this once-in-a-lifetime stunt?

To this (additions in bold):

Since the press seems to be in full-disclosure mode these days, I want to finally come clean. Back in 1967, when I was 19 and worked for the Niagara Falls (N.Y.) Gazette (now the Niagara Gazette) as a summer intern, our city editor asked me to find out what tourists thought about an amazing local event: Engineers had literally "turned off" the famous cataracts, diverting water so they could shore up the crumbling rock face. Were visitors disappointed to find a trickle rather than a roar? Or thrilled about witnessing this once-in-a-lifetime stunt?

The column had been edited, without notation, within a couple of hours of bloggers calling attention to it, to emphasize Mitchell’s youth and inexperience at the time of his ethical faux pas. Luckily, several bloggers and the Internet preserved the original piece.

So, it seems someone went back and altered a three-year-old column to reflect more positively on Mitchell, once it got a bit of attention from the “Grassy Knoll,” “rightwing bloggers.” Makes all those “ludicrous” accusations of dishonesty of the mainstream press seem not so ludicrous, doesn’t it?

Mitchell now has not just his industry’s malfeasance to answer for, but his own malfeasance, which he admitted to in a 2003 column, and which was then compounded when someone altered his three-year-old copy to protect him.

Changing copy three years after it has been published, without providing a “correction” or “clarification” note, is entirely unethical by the very standards of the newspaper industry Mitchell is charged with covering. Dan Riehl, another blogger, has evidence that Mitchell may have been altering copy in his latest E&P column, as well.

Rightwing bloggers are predisposed to distrust the media, as are most conservatives. The fauxtographers and defenders like Mitchell are giving us no reason to be encouraged. The mainstream press’ stock is in credibility. The right course is to answer, quickly and thoroughly, any credible charges against them, so as to preserve that stock.

Instead, with the notable exceptions of David Perlmutter and Jim Pinkerton, the mainstream media seems content to blame it all on the Grassy Knoll while half of its readers find news coverage is greener on the other side.

This is why we don’t believe you.

Editor's note: In the third paragraph of this story, I goofed and wrote the word "complacent," instead of "complicit." It has been corrected.

Oh, hell
The bloggers don't have to discredit the MSM; they're doing a fine job of it all by themselves.

And the Oscar goes to...
..."Green Helmit Guy" for Best Director.

And the Oscar goes to...

...“unluckiest multiple home owner in Lebanon" for Best Actress.

And the Oscar goes to...

...Greg Mitchell for Best Writer.

NEVER TRUST
ALWAYS VERIFY

Hmmm
why are there no conservative fake photos or pro israeli made up stories? Integrity maybe?

bushbaby
Find 'em and I'll note them. Do the homework.

Ha Ha
bushbaby has to stay after class and do homework.

yes mam
"This broad condemnation, and the conspiracy theories, lodged against photographers in war zones -- who are risking their lives while bloggers risk nothing but carpal tunnel syndrome -- needs to be refuted."
Oh cry me a river! Like its their duty to bring us doctored photos of war zones! the ones getting the carpal tunnel are the photo-shoppers. I'm just getting eye strain from doing all my homework! (I haven't found any)
More like conspiracy FACTS not theories.

oh Miss Cleo
Me tinks Mel Gibson ben deh victim of deh brown likur truth serum. Tro deh chicken bones and tell us deh truf!

Why should we?
Every time we turn around there is another scandal coming from the MSM. Doctored photos, fake documents, staged flood scenes, rigging a truck to explode...the list goes on and on. Not to mention the political bias seen in the media and the circling of the wagons every time someone in the cabal screws up and gets caught! That's why we don't believe them and why we shouldn't. We don't get the facts from these people, just truthiness...their version of the truth unencumbered by the facts!

bushbaby
My apologies. I read your comment quickly, late last night and misunderstood it. No need to do any homework. hee hee.

The deceitfulness goes WAY, WAY back
During the Nixon administration, I saw Spiro
Agnew become a target. This was _before_ Agnew
was learned to have done unethical things; thus,
the media were not after him for his actual
faults, but hated him for the BEST thing he did.

Aware that the journalistic establishment was
already ruled by hard-left bias, Agnew gave a
televised speech to expose and denounce this
bias. I listened to the whole speech. Agnew
asked private citizens, on their own, to put
pressure on the media to be honest. He never,
never, never called for or hinted at government
censorship. Scarcely 24 hours had passed, though,
before at least one major network news anchor
was saying with a straight face that Agnew HAD
called specifically for GOVERNMENT censorship.
The anchor _knew_ this was a lie; he lied on
purpose and premeditatedly. And the hard-left
media have not gotten any more truthful since.

no need for apologies MK
I am familiar with the habits of the night owl myself.
the MSM has always known that the vast majority of we "sheeple" would not take the time to question their facts. After all, they get paid for it and they seem so genuine! the benefits of them getting away with it far outway the slap on the wrist they get for making a little "mistake".

So what's new?
Why don't we hear more about the Reuters armored vehicle "hit by an Israeli rocket"? That should be newsworthy for the MSM propaganda machine.

The one picture of the vehicle I did see showed one relatively small hole in the hood. Hit by a rocket??? Hahaha....must have been one of those 20mm MK IV pop bottle rockets.

Do these so called journalists have any experience or knowledge of damage caused by a rocket?? Apparently not.
Had that vehicle been struck by an Israeli rocket, armored or not, damage would have been far greater likely resulting in the death of the two "journalists" exiting the vehicle at the time. Add another one to a long growing list of "dirty laundry".........

Our MSM has descended into abject deceitful reporting. Manufactured stories, doctored photographs, staged videos, and outright lies seems the norm for them.
Why anybody would defend the MSM is beyond my comprehension.

How these idiots manage to stay in business should be apparent to the most casual observer. "Damn the truth" sensationalism is the object of the game...all in the name of selling their bovine scatology to the masses. Who cares about objectivity as long as it sells copy?

My message to the MSM....."All your fakes are belong to us". We know who you are....we know what you are...we know what you do....and we ARE watching you.

MSM is just scared
With most news consumers either getting their news from the internet or from FOXNews, the MSM is just scared of its own irrelevancy. Oh, sure, the evening network news draws big crowds (but continually shrinking), but most only flip that on for background noise while they're washing dishes waiting for the next episode of 'House'.

The MSM has become the punchline to so many jokes, they need to come up with crackpot theories that there's "someone out to get them". THAT'S the ironic part. While they're sitting there accusing everyone else of being paranoid, they, themselves, are the ones who need the meds.

It has really gotten absurd lately. After YET ANOTHER study from one of their beloved college universities (this time UCLA) revealed that there IS a measurable left wing tilt to the media, they had to start accusing college political science professors of bias. What a crock.

There've been countless studies, each measuring in slightly different ways -- the number of times people are identified as 'conservative' versus 'liberal', the number of 'conservative' versus 'liberal' 'experts' they interview, the amount of time devoted to news positive of 'conservative' ideas versus 'liberal' ideas -- and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them has found considerable liberal bias.

But, alas, no matter how much measurable evidence is out there, the REAL Grassy Knollers just insist that it is everyone else's fault.

I remember a couple of amusing examples of eggregious bias by the Associated Press (or as they are correctly referred to as: the ASS-ociated Press). In the middle of 2002, the AP ran a 'news' article with the headline "HILLARY CLINTON IS A MODERATE!!" Um, I'm sorry, but no matter how you cut it, regardless of whether you agree with that or not, that is NOT news. That is the headline for an editorial -- an OPINION piece, NOT a 'news' piece!

Another amusing example was from the end of last year when they referred to Barbara Boxer as a 'moderate'. Go to ANY web site that follows the senate and ranks their 'liberalness' or 'conservativeness'. Any one, whether tilted to the left or to the right. Every single one of them will tell you she is about the most liberal senator in the senate, a FAR cry from 'moderate'.

It is things like this that the MSM would say "So what!" to, but it is things like that the remove all credibility. So when Dan Rather gets caught using forged documents in a 'news' story, OF COURSE no RATIONAL person believes it was merely a 'mistake'. If it REALLY WERE a 'mistake', there would be just as much chance that such a mistake would favor the right. 100% of all the mistakes, though, have favored the far left, and ONLY the far left.

Even when they are caught red handed in one of these 'mistakes' they generally try to pretend it didn't happen. A couple of years ago, the Boston Glob (sic) got caught in a BIG mistake. One of our 'moderate' (yeah, right) Boston City Councilmen claimed to have found new evidence of more abuse at the now infameous Abu Ghurayb prison, and decided to hold a press conference. At this press conference, he had blown up a number of pictures that he claimed showed US soldiers raping Iraqi women. Predictably, the Boston Glob (sic) ate it up, reporting how EVIL the Bush administration was for re-opening Saddam's rape rooms.

Of course it turns out the photos were a complete fraud, and were downloaded from an internet porno site. When confronted with the evidence, instead of the Boston Glob (sic) retracting their accusation, their 'ombudsman' (again, yeah, right!) simply apologized for printing hard-core pornography on their front page, totally ignoring the FACT that the entire story was a sham!

And THAT is EXACTLY what the ENTIRE MSM has become: a sham. No rational person takes them seriously. Even if we assume that they really don't MEAN to report lies, that doesn't change the fact that they continuously, repeatedly, and unapologetically print lies, and that ALL of those lies turns out to have one very specific political preference to them.

THAT is the bottom line, and now that it is so easy to out them as liars, in this age of the internet where everyone is an 'expert', they see the era of spreading lies and not having to worry about getting caught coming to an end.

The main mission of the MSM
is to advance the cause of socialism. The only difference between socialism and communism is the one believes the socialist state may be achieved through legislation and other peaceful means. The other believes only through violent, bloody revolution can the socialist state be attained. The end results are the same. The tactics in use by the MSM were pioneered by both Hitlerites and Lenninists. The basic is Joseph Goebbels, "Tell a lie often enough and the people will believe it".
It seems to me today there is an information war.
On the one side you have the MSM consisting of the alphabet networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, CNBC, the major newspapers of the country and Soros/M.Moore et al. The other is Fox News, a few columnists and a handfull of newspapers, mostly in the red states. Pretty lopsided. Until you throw in the guerilla force, the Bloggers. They have tripped up the MSM more than any other source. What is needed is an H. Ross Perot to buy out a few media outlets.

Why bring in Perot...
What we really need is to establish the integrity of the press. Perot is just another rich guy with an agenda. Maybe he is good. Maybe he is politically counter to the MSM. Arriana Huffington used to be, as well. Now look at her. Bill Buckley is pretty well off, I believe. Why not him? Why not Bill O'Reilly? I agree more than disagrre with them, but I don't want some rich guy running the press for political reasons. Just let small independent businessmen run the press and figuratively and financially live or die by their integrity. Long live the internet and the information age and the bloggers who keep an eye on the press and tries to hold them accountable!

More Important Questions:
More incidious than what the MSM covers is what it covers up. One would reasonably think nobody ever used a firearm in self defense given the lack of coverage. Where is the outcry at the injustice currently being inflicted on two of our border patrol agents?

How much infrastructure has been built in Iraq? How many schools? How many Israeli civilians were killed in the recent clash with Lebanon?

This lack of information is, I think, more telling than the outright frauds being perpetrated. There is no support or patriotism from the fifth column media in this country.

This is hitting the population like one of those moments that you KNOW you are forgetting something, but unable to discern what it is. What is missing here? What am I overlooking?

Keep in mind fellow citizens, that our "homework" includes searching out and exposing the items being deliberately overlooked as well as the frauds being presented.

Editing the past
"Many other blogs picked up on the 2003 column, suggesting that Mitchell might be sympathetic to faked news because he himself had been a faker.

Several hours after Confederate Yankee’s post went up, that blogger noticed the text of the 2003 article had been changed."

Sounds like John Kerry's website. He proposed 2 years of national "service" be required for high schoolers, some going into the army, some the peace corps and so on, (wonder how they'd decide who went to the army and who would be partying it up in the peace corps?). Eventually after it was highlighted on a few sites that page was pulled from the achieves and a "kinder gentler" version substituted.

News or fiction?
What else would you expect from graduates of the Jason Blair school of journalism as reported by Dan Blather or Connie "Just between you and me" Chung.

The irony is thick
Here we have Greg Mitchell, apologist extraordinaire for the MSM, demonstrating exactly why the MSM are so untrustworthy.

The news -- and I use that word advisedly -- we get from the MSM is about 40% straight reporting, bolstered with 50% left-wing manipulation of the facts, and 10% outright fraud. This situation will not improve as long as the profession -- again, I use that word advisedly -- is staffed overwhelmingly by Democrats and left-wingers.

The MSM have squandered whatever credibility they once held, and they have no one but themselves to blame. Mitchell blaming the bloggers for this mess is like a thief blaming his crime on the cops who caught him. Mitchell is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

WaPo slants
A "news" account the other day in the Washington Post concerned the behavior of Marine Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani, one of the Haditha-incident commanders up the line at the time. The narrative was going fairly objectively until about the tenth paragraph of the page-one story.

Then the reporter, Thomas E. Ricks, turned lefty:

“Commentators likened the incident [at Haditha] to the Vietnam War’s My Lai massacre and predicted that it would damage the U.S. effort in Iraq more than the Abu Ghraib detainee abuse scandal had.”

Did Ricks then hasten to add a “however” paragraph, to cover such topics as which commentators were likening and predicting, plus any contrary arguments that have surfaced to justify the raid?

Are you kidding? This is the Washington Post running with a long, inflammatory story that is damaging to the U.S. military. The editorial page is, comparatively, more fair and balanced. And in the article itself, there was no qualifying of the status of Ricks as an objective reporter, or the inconvenient fact that he’s written a book, “Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq.”

Double Standards
Every notice how the Democrats and those in the Liberal Media feel it's their right to lie, twist, spin, bend, and report the news in a mode of alternate reality. What ever the Media reports you might have one thing the public can relate to and the rest is just made up. That way the rest that is made up is made to look like the Republicans are hiding something and it's our luck that the Media just so happened to discover it. With the Liberal Media news these days it's nothing but pure hindsight and complaints and a whole lot of making the news instead of reporting it. Even the analysis of the war in Iraq and the war between the Israelis and Hezbollah was so far removed from the actual events of real time, the Media's analysis on how the war was going was based on favoring the terrorists in Iraq and Hezbollah. If there's one thing the Democrats and the Media does is excel in propaganda favoring anyone who wants to kill American's and especially shutting anyone who happens to question their patriotism.

Katie Couric?
I am not sure if it is Katie Couric, but which ever woman it is that is about to become CBS' new anchor, has been running a commericial where she appears saying tune in to us, we not only will tell you what is happening but also what it means to you (paraphrased). So, there you have the anchor for CBS news flat out stating that they will slant their news so that people will think the way CBS wants them to. How about that for gall? Well I guess at least it is not covert reporting and propagandizing. Still, it is pretty insulting to viewers who might think they can understand what events mean to them and who know if they want opinions TV has a multitude of shows spewing them.

Katy Couric
Have you seen her new commercial? She states that she is not just going to give the news facts, but will provide "perspective" as well. I think this is as open a confession that her ideology will warp all that she presents. Start boycotting CBS now!!!

Greg Mitchell
Has anybody checked whether or not Greg Mitchell really was a summer intern in 1967? Perhaps the man's pathology extends to that, too.

corrupting the media
the democRATs and liars who so willing corrupt the media for partisan purposes simply cannot get it through their narrow little minds that the American people just don't trust them to tell the truth any more.

Every time I see an anonymous source, I believe that the "reporter" lied (made it up).

How about that?
Katy Couric: She states that she is not just going to give the news facts, but will provide "perspective" as well.

I always wondered what the prespective of a saggy (way past perky) upper middle aged soccer mom would be like. Doesn't the "View" already offer that to the people that care?

Bleepless:
It's already been checked. The incident Mitchell had been writing about (turning off the falls for a repair job) actually happened in 1969, not 1967.

As I pointed out in Confederate Yankee's comment thread, that made Mitchell 21, not 19, and potentially in his first real journalism job, not a summer intern. At the very least, he was certainly much closer to his first real job.

Jeez, even at my advanced old age (54) I understand that you can Google almost any fact nowadays. When is the MSM going to catch on?

Speak of devil
Anyone check out Drudge? New York Times photo of the Purrfect Angelz dance group performing in Iraq has a really freaky picture of a microphone cable that disappears in mid air. If they are going to doctor such mundane photos like this, why should they be trusted with anything important?

Not without irony...
the more the MSM lies or spins, the more it is put under the microscope of the bloggers. ro-d1 may have a problem with right wing analysts and reporters, and it is good that they fall under the same microscope. But I think he is mistaken if complaining about right wing "innacuracies" or errors boosts the credibility of anybody in the MSM.

What the....
So r0_d1, what exactly was the purpose of that waste of space you call a comment. Does that have anything to do with anything. You spew out a bunch of "facts" but there doesn't seem to be any reason for it, I read the whole thing wondering if you were ever going to get to a point.....and I'm still waiting.

Why does it take
commentators 1 hour to tell you what the President spent 30 minutes saying? Why does Katie not understand that I am capable of understanding by myself what the President said? Why can they not just give me the facts and let me make up my mind? Why do all the pseudo-intellectuals believe we are so dumb and they are so smart?

Faux News is no exception
Do the posters here really believe that Fox (Faux) News is an unbiased news source? I think they're ALL biased except for the PBS stuff and maybe NPR. Watch any episode of Hannity & Commes (sp?) or O'Reilly with an objective mind and I would hope that you would agree with me. I don't believe anything that wasn't caught on videotape and even that is suspect these days. Anybody see "Prison Break"? It sure scared me to think you can be "black-bagged" (like in "V") and framed with doctored up footage if it is for the "greater good". Double-plus-ungood.

r0_d1
Ahhhh...the 'Fairness' Doctrine. I can understand why you libs miss it. The heck with all that crazy 'free speech' business anyway. They liked it better back in the day.

As Adam Thierer noted in his piece 'Why the Fairness Doctrine is Anything But Fair- As one former Kennedy Administration official, Bill Ruder, has said, "We had a massive strategy to use the fairness doctrine to challenge and harass the right-wing broadcasters, and hope the challenge would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too expensive to continue."

Those WERE the good ole days weren't they? The American public couldn't have chosen to listen to Rush or any of the 'right wing radio hosts' back then. It was SO much easier to just shut the right wingers up than it is to counter them.

I don't quite understand the reasoning behind the rest of your post. Are you implying that Rush Limbaugh had something to do with the death of liberal Alan Berg? Or that the Republican party is behind his death? Perhaps you should justify your reasoning for putting this in your post.

You said: "Then a few months after the FCC dropped the Fairness Doctrine Limbaugh syndicated his show in unprecedented fashion, by offering it free of charge to stations across the nation. (this is just a thing that make you go Huh!)"

Umm...I'm not following you. Are you saying Rush had a nefarious purpose for offering it free of charge? Btw, if I were trying to start a cookie business, the first thing I would do is deliver free cookies all over town in the hopes that people would find them so delicious that they would all 'rush' to buy more from me and continue to buy from me. Is there something about this that is against the 'liberal code'? 'Cause we conservatives just don't get your reasoning here...

If you are expecting us to find some evil right-wing conspiracy here, you are just going to have to be a bit more explicit. Explain to why it is a 'bad thing' that the modern media is no longer confined to the leftist MSM.

What?
straightener writes: Fox News is no exception

Do the posters here really believe that Fox News is an unbiased news source?

Who said that?

PBS and NPR
are NOT biased? Did I REALLY read that?????

really?
r0_d1 writes: In June, Berg was machine gunned to death by extreme right-wingers claiming they were from the Aryan nation.

The Aryan Nation is right wing? Aren't they the remnants of the democrat party that once proudly marched under the banner of Jim Crow laws and the KKK, with the likes of Robert Byrd and Albert Gore Senior and Bull Conner carrying it?

Did I say that?
I read several editions of "with the exception of Fox News" was said several times in this blog...try to at least read before flaming. Examples:

beowulfe:
With most news consumers either getting their news from the internet or from FOXNews

buck:
The other is Fox News, a few columnists

So shut the hell up.

PBS and NPR are less slanted than the other MSMs. Is the world in black in white with you people?

Strict syntax parsers soon back off of their little games when they say something of importance (a rarity) and then get burned by the same tactic. "Mission Accomplished" anyone? Puh-lease.

We'll never reach consensus when people are unwilling to compromise on lesser issues when the larger problems never get addressed. This all or nothing philosophy has poisoned both "sides". That's another "Grrrrrr!" that bugs me. If you're an American, you're on one "side", OUR side.

Media Manipulation of "News"
In October 2001, a few weeks after 9/11, I traveled to Afghanistan to Khoja Bauhuddin, the 'headquarters' of the (then) Northern Alliance in order to help the Afghans get their combat medical programs in order preparatory to the fighting that was to follow shortly. I made daily trips to the (then) 'frontlines' at Dash't-E-Qala to observe the skirmishes with the Taliban before the fighting began in earnest.
I remember one very enlightening evening spent drinking my (illicit) vintage California Cabernet (Silver Oak- '92) and watching a Spanish TV news crew cobble up a few reports to send back to their home station in Madrid.
Clustered around their video editor, they gathered the raw materials for their report from the 'front': 1) footage of the 105-mm artillery gun we had observed firing that day BUT the gun had been turned about forty degrees AWAY from the Taliban positions toward empty ground AND the three rounds that the gun crew fired-each to a shout of "Alihu akhbar"- had all been all bought and paid for by the news crew ($150USD per, I believe); 2) file combat footage of Afghan mujahideen left over from the Eighties (though they stlll looked remarkably the same); 3) a sound track from a street demonstration that had occurred two days earlier in the little town there. When I finished my wine and left their encampment, they were arguing over what background music they should use. I always wanted to see that report as shown on Madrid TV; I bet it was a dandy.

Faux Bombed Ambulance Photos
What is really scary about these photos is that the vast majority of adults who have experience viewing photos of war or who have experience working on vehicles could tell, at the drop of a hat, that these photos do not show a vehicle that was hit by a missle or a vehicle that was damaged recently. The rust spots around the hole in the roof reveal that the hole was not made recently. The lack of damage to the rest of the vehicle reveals that it was not hit by a missle, exploding or not. The conclusions to be drawn are catastrophic for Reuters' credibility.

Conclusion number 1 is that the people who sent the photo to Reuters knew that the editors who would inspect the photo, prior to publication, are people whose experience of the world is far more limited than that of the vast majority of adult Americans and Europeans. In other words, the editors are not operating according to reasonable standards for professional journalists. The only alternative hypothesis is that the editors believe that Western adults are entirely gullible. Well, there is one other hypothesis. It could be that the editors are so intensely anti-Israeli that they will take enormous risks with their own careers to hurt the Israeli cause.

Because Reuters is defending these photos, conclusion number 2 is that no one in management at Reuters is capable of looking at these photos and recognizing that they are absolutely not photos which show damage from a missle. That just floors me. I cannot believe that higher management is not sending heads rolling left and right. Of course, the same applies to Mitchell who is discussed in your (Ham's) essay above. That he would attempt to defend these photos as showing missle strikes reveals a staggering ignorance of the world. Thanks.

Conservative main stream press...
...where the Bush administration pays Maggie Gallagher and Walter Williams to write pro Bush stories with tax payer money? Or, the faux news reports that goes to the "drive by media" and they publish it or broadcast it without telling the viewership that these are not really news stories but propoganda? You mean THOSE conservative main stream press organizations?

Yup, the left leaning press. The ones that gave us such important news stories on Swiftboat Captains for truth and the importance of MARRIAGE just when the election heats up. Get a grip conservatives.

MSMBS and other goodies
The swifties were THERE. they observed jfk in action. Has ONE of their accusations been refuted - i.e. challenged and proven false? No.

By the same token has ONE of the accusations made by john kerry in 1971 (testimony in front of the Fulbright commission in which he called Vietnam servicemen war criminals) been proven true? No.

If you want to know about jfk you should see the documentary - Stolen Honor - Wounds That Never Heal. It documents Kerry's accusations in his testimony and gives American heroes who were in North Vietnam POW camps at the time the opportunity to tell how his lies made their lives immeasurably worse. Every one of them holds at least 5 battle ribbons - each of them holds the Purple Heart. One holds the Medal of Honor. And if the Swiftie allegations are untrue, as jfk and his apologists claim, then they should be debated in an open forum. Until then they are true.

john kerry has three Purple Hearts. Not one of them was serious enough for hospitalization and one of them required a band-aid. The Purple Heart is for HEROES. The swifties were THERE.

As for the doctored photos - I didn't see any mention of Rathergate, which I always considered the gold standard of the art. I guess it wasn't necessary to make the point.

C BS has made the long, strange trip from Edward R. Murrow to Katie Couric

how sad

A. Maggie Gallagher and Walter William are MSM? I don't think you understand the working definition of MSM.

B. Which U.S. President did NOT have people paid (with 'tax payer money) 'to write?

Kali writes: "Or, the faux news reports that goes to the "drive by media" and they publish it or broadcast it without telling the viewership that these are not really news stories but propoganda? You mean THOSE conservative main stream press organizations?"

I'm not aware of which "drive by media" broadcasts or publishings that were knowingly misrepresented. Can you enlighten us?

Kali Writes: "Yup, the left leaning press. The ones that gave us such important news stories on Swiftboat Captains for truth and the importance of MARRIAGE just when the election heats up. Get a grip conservatives."

Actually, the MSM boycotted the swifties for months and most never DID interview them. After the alternative media spent many WEEKS on the story, the MSM began to make passing, disparaging, incredulous remarks ABOUT them -but very rarely TO them..as they didn't speak to them. And of course it was a topic when the election was heating up..the swifties were quite open about the fact that they were 'campaigning against Kerry and why they were doing so - that was the whole point. As a matter of fact, if the MSM hadn't been so busy colluding with the dems on their attempted boycott (ignore 'em and they'll go away - or at least most everyday Americans won't hear of them), the whole thing may have had a chance to run its course BEFORE the election heated up. They still hadn't quite caught on to the fact that they no longer had the sole media voice in the country.

As for the importance of marriage, of course that was a topic as the election was heating up...duh..it was on quite a few ballots.

The pics were true
before they were false.

Integrity of the press? The press is a hoar (I found out I would get censored if I spelled it the other way). Lennin is the piemp. (I just got censored for the piemp thing, too...

The MSM and Truth
The situation is really out of hand. The media has been creating a parallel reality which is exactly the opposite of truth.
Consider three stories
1. Hurricane Katrina
The truth of the matter is that the resue operation in this disaster was the best and most efficient on record, as we now learn. MAny tens of thousands of people were stranded and helpless, and practically all were saved. Helicopters from the Coast Guard and National Guard worked tirelessly and they rescued on the order of 25,000 people each. Hundreds of volunteers and local police and firemen were out on boats rescuing hundreds and perhaps thousands of others. The people rescued of all races behaved admirably; rescuers were impressed with the degree of organization with which they got the weakest and most vulnerable out first, and the able bodied folk who took charge came out last. Yet what was the impression given to the world by the MSM?
There were tales of hundreds of murders in the Dome, anarchy and gang warfare, rapes of children, utter chaotic disorder with no effective rescues. Lots of claims of disastrous bungling and that it was all Bush's fault. And the truth? No murders in the dome, little crime elsewhere, the aAtional Guard was fully in control of the dome. and the rescues went on utterly unobserved.
Again, we now know that the fantastically successful rescue efforts went on almost continuously but somehow were entirely missed by the MSM who conveyed the impression of abject failure.
2.The ISrael-Hezbollah War
This was a war in which every single action taken by Hezbollah was what has always been characterized as a war crime. They are: Crossing borders in peacetime to capture and kill citizens of a neighboring country; shooting unaimed rockets at cities, rockets whose damage has no military purpose; shooting rockets from areas in which there are civilians; putting civilians in buildings used as rocket platforms.
Do we hear anything about this from the MSM?
No, we hear only trumped up faked or fudged stories of alleged attacks that hurt civilians by the Israelis, who have made special efforts to avoid hurting civilians.
The MSM seems intent here on conveying the imprssion that white is black and black is white.

3. The exact same thing is true in Iraq. If you look with any perspective at wht has gone on in Iraq you will discover that there has been almost incredible progress in building a successful democracy starting from nothing at amazingly little cost. The various votes setting up a constitution writing group, then approving a constitution then electing a legilaturem and the dramatic progress in pacifying most of the country and building long neglected infrastructure schools and hospitals and killing lots of enemy is also remarkable.
And what do we hear from the MSM? Counts of each American death, the constant mantra of failure. We are failing, things are getting worse.

The old enemy in fact is fading away, and the Sunni population now wants us to stay to protect them against unruly Shia. The old war is almost over; we now face a new war against Irani sponsored murderous Shias. And why is that? It is because Iran hates and fears our success. If we were failing they would love to see us stew in our juice. So they support Sadrites like they support Hezbollah to keep us occuoied while they complete their defiance of the YN.

I am going astray from my point.
But in every one of these cases, the MSM is trying to create an image that is exactly the opposite of the truth. Their perspective is unnatural and bizarre. Is it bribery? Is if hatred of Bush? What explains this?

Daniel
Great post. As to what explains this...uhhhh. The best that I can come up with is the sort of thing that sends liberals around the bend and sounds melodramatic to average people who don't follow politics too closely. Todays liberalism is some sort of sickness. The more closely you examine it, the more unbelievably sick it is.

P.S. I really appreciate the points you made regarding the Hurricane Katrina rescue operation. I think we modern American sheeple have become so coddled that many of us don't understand that disaster's can still happen, and our modern, technical advancments don't negate that. I think the rescue operation was the one shining light in the whole ordeal.

Media fakes
Add this to the growing list of media fakes.

http://ussneverdock.blogspot.com/2005/06/america-confidence-in-media-plummets.html

Here's an even longer list of fakes and biased reporting from the BBC.

http://ussneverdock.blogspot.com/2005/01/bbc-is-turn-off-its-official.html

Watching the media
It's the media's job to keep the politicians honest. It's just good, that now, someone is watching them. I'm sure thier lies during Katrina affected charity giving. I'm sure many checks were being written when people heard about the superdome, then ripped up, when tose stories were found to be exagerated.

At least they try to be subtle
Unlike say the BBC News (especially News 24) which is just downright biased against Israel and the US.

Mainstream Media
I've been directly involved in a number of events covered by the media over the years and have noted that the story that gets reported usually only superficially resembles the actual event. Sometimes, the reporter or editor has a pre-determined spin (See Dan Rather). More often, the reporter doesn't have the knowledge or background necessary to comprehend what he or she is seeing. I'm not sure which is the bigger problem. In the first instance, it is a case of fraud by the reporter or his editors. In the second, it is a case of ignorance. Neither is acceptable. Both are dangerous.

remind me again...
...when do we get the rest of Kerry's military record? In time for the next election? Is Dan Rather helping to make it more true???

We've known this since the 1960s
It just hasn't been so blatant until now. Even when they report facts, their interpretations of them don't make sense. The MSM is now overtly an arm of the Democratic Party, delivering 15 points in every election. Their hatred of George Bush has driven them nuts, and it shows.

Today Howard Kurtz lambastes his colleagues for "shamelessly hyp[ing] the John Mark Karr story . . .," but not a word about the way the media have played up speculations about Cheney and Rove leaking Valerie Plame's identity, including charges that this was all a White House offensive against Joe Wilson. Will they, in Kurtz's words "now apologize for taking the country for a ride?"

I can imagine Isakoff and Corn deciding that this was the perfect time to publish a book, revealing the embarrassing truth, but spinning it to continue to accuse the White House in the face of continued revelations that vindicate the President and demonstrate Joe Wilson's dishonesty.

What other business could treat its customers with such contempt and get away with it? No wonder Fox News and conservative talk radio have been such successes.

PHEW!!!
Ignorance is not bliss, ignorance is death.

If you don't know the rules of the game nor understand the objective, how in the world do you expect to understand what all the propaganda is about.

The first thing you have to get into perspective is that Communism and Fascism are not opposites.

Both are totalitarian slave states, and guess who the slaves are. If a totalitarian state (no matter what you call it) is left, then right is Anarchy. Half way between the totalitarian state and anarchy is a constitutionally limited Republic.
In spite of all the rhetoric, not one of us has ever seen a constitutional Republic.

Ambulance photos.
I stumbled upon this story and forwarded the pictures of the ambulance to my husband who is a military pilot. His reply was "there is no way that ambulance was hit by any kind of missile". Basically, that a vehicle hit by a missile with explosives, would be a charred out frame with melting metal. If the missile was emptied of explosives, then the diameter of the hole indicates that the weight of the missile would have had to be heavy enough that there would have been a huge hole in the floor of the ambulance, also putting a hole about 10-20 feet into the ground where the ambulance was at when it was hit. Even I, without such knowledge, could see that the hole cut out right where the vent it, is pretty damning. Yet, journalists reported this as True? Sad, Sad, Sad!
