Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This piece is co-authored by Mary Grabar and Brian Birdnow.

Is John McCain’s campaign sputtering along the same track that Gerald Ford’s and Bob Dole’s did? History--after November 4, 2008--will tell.

But before the train rolls off, history can provide some helpful advice to the McCain campaign to keep it on track. McCain might be able to learn lessons from the doomed, lackluster campaigns of Ford and Dole. Like Ford, the presumptive Republican standard bearer strikes friend and foe alike as an earnest and patriotic American. But McCain’s campaign suffers from a lack of focus, an unclear message, and an inability or unwillingness to convey strong conviction.

Alas, these are the same traits that plagued two of our most forgettable Presidential candidates. President Ford, running in 1976 against the Democratic candidate, former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter, displayed many of the weaknesses now afflicting the McCain campaign. Ford, like McCain, impressed most observers as honest, hardworking, and patriotic. The former Michigan University football star and Naval officer fairly radiated integrity. His solid, midwestern values seemed ill suited, however, to the media age as he failed to use the television camera to any advantage. Ford’s turgid campaigning and speaking style inspired no one, not even his own staff. Moreover, he offered no consistent set of values. At various times Ford emphasized fiscal conservatism, but he showed little imagination in legislative matters and tended to avoid social issues and the political problems attendant to them. Indeed, President Ford seemed unaware of the seismic shifts in the intellectual world of the 1970s and the effect that these shifts would work on national politics. The American public had tired of politics-as-usual and sought to roll back the excesses of the welfare state. Ford did not grasp the central principle that political differences actually developed from ideological divisions, most of which could not be reconciled. One of these, as our interminable debates since 1973 have illustrated, is abortion. Abortion is one of those issues that go back to premises and moral convictions. It was the type of issue that President Ford avoided and hoped would resolve itself.

Ford was reputed to have been the nicest guy in Washington, like the guy next door who kept his lawn neat and paid his taxes, someone who might make a good manager. But he was hardly anyone to inspire voters.

McCain, like Ford, projects an air of honesty, common sense, and good intentions. Yet, he fails to generate much enthusiasm for his campaign. He echoes Ford, also, in that he trusts his opponents’ good intentions a bit too much, and seems to have no grasp of the great ideological questions of his time.

McCain shares similarities also with 1996 Republican Presidential candidate, Kansas Senator Robert Dole. Dole won the nomination after twenty years of active, undisguised political jockeying. He served as President Ford’s running mate in 1976, threw his hat in the ring briefly in 1980, and suffered a painful loss to George H. W. Bush in the1988 primary battle. Dole saw the 1996 nomination as the pinnacle of his career and as the reward for a lifetime of meritorious GOP service. Unfortunately, Dole couldn’t convince the public that his undeniable achievements in the Senate entitled him to the Presidency. He, like McCain, failed to create any real momentum. Late in his campaign, Dole expressed frustration at the necessity of having to convince the public that they should vote for him.

Like Bob Dole, McCain served his constituents well in the U.S. Senate, harbored undisguised Presidential ambitions, but lost a bitterly contested nomination battle to a Bush family member in 2000. He has spent a full generation in public life preparing for a Presidential run. But now that he has earned the nomination he can’t seem to communicate to the public why he is the best candidate and why he deserves their votes. McCain sees the nomination as the crowning achievement of a glorious career, but seems mystified as to why the people think they need a better reason to vote for him.

President Ford and Senator Bob Dole adopted conciliatory and neutral stances and both lost their Presidential elections. In 1976 Ford, possibly the weakest incumbent in American history, fell to Jimmy Carter in a surprisingly close race. Carter won 51% of the popular tally and 297 electoral votes. Democratic analysts sensed trouble ahead since Carter dominated only in the South, but he did just enough elsewhere to win. In 1996 President Bill Clinton handily dispatched Dole, claiming 49% of the popular vote to 41% for the Republican champion, with 8% going to the Reform Party candidate, Ross Perot, who garnered a surprising large percentage as a third-party candidate (although this was down substantially from his 1992 total) precisely because of convictions and passion. Voters identified with his outrage over taxes, and his chutzpah in forging ahead and putting his money where his (outspoken) mouth was. Ross Perot, an unknown in the early 1990s, became a household name by shooting from the hip and not mincing his words. Minor candidates split the remaining two percent of the votes. Clinton, whose ethical problems and character shortcomings were already common knowledge, rolled up 379 electoral votes in a clear and convincing victory.

Will John McCain repeat the mistakes made by President Ford and Senator Dole and join the ranks of failed Republican Party candidates? What does seem crystal clear is that a candidate with no vision, no firm ideological convictions, and a penchant for alienating his natural base of support faces a very difficult challenge on the first Tuesday in November. With his seemingly conciliatory position on abortion, as displayed by his recently entertaining the idea of a pro-choice Vice Presidential candidate, he does little to distinguish himself from his opponent, a man who voted against life support for infants born after botched abortions. Conservatives have no reason to vote given such choices.

John McCain needs to repeat what he did in the interview with Rick Warren at the Saddleback Church on Saturday. His voting record on abortion, for example, demonstrates his convictions on life with action. Now he needs to send a strong message to voters. He needs to cling to those convictions with the same tenacity he clung to his patriotism and life itself while a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Then he needs to say it to the American people—loud and clear, and with conviction.

what you need to win at the last moment
Mr McCain....you have already won the classes ...energy issues, taxes, you have won the wealty americans...you have won the conservatives....what you haven't won is the mass sentiment...which will be the differentiating point right now at the last moment...Obama has gotten the endorsement from Clinton...now you need the endorsement from someone...who?? Either Bush or Cheney...who will agree to their mistake of not pulling back from Iraq and saving thousands of american troops, also Bush should admit to not looking into the mortgage and banking sector mess by which the economy has bottomed but he tried to boost the economy by the economic stimulus package which was not sufficient enough to over come the financial mess...you need to get Bush or Cheney up on stage and admit those mistakes and show to masses that there is a better plan that you have and will be able to boost the economy not by raising the taxes or creating more wars in the world...what masses need is cheaper gas...you will get that from alternative forms of energy...well this is just a suggestion...don't know if Bush or Cheney will be bold enough in their last days to come out on the stage and support you to win by admiting their mistakes....economic and political advisors can think about this or other ways...Terry the plumber!

Banging BrianR

Your precious principles suck.

Ah! This time I'm sure of getting it
right about the last two posters.

BOTH of TH's resident village idiots have signed in: Deadhead and Roberto the Clown.

Of course, by tomorrow AM, Roberto's latest effort will be gone yet again.

Just like last nights "leavings".

Hahahahahahahaha, Roberto! It must REALLY suck being you.

Oh....Deadhead....don't want to forget you. I hear they're trying to perfect growing brain cells. Do yourself a favor. Sign up now, before the line gets too long.

train meets a bird brain

I'm happy to say Brian is powerless to oppose me; but that's not a corner on the power market. Still; I'm a big train.

A speeding train wouldn't slow down on account of some smart rooster crowing on the tracks. Brian is a rooster who was told he has to crow early in the mornings, or the sun doesn't wake up. Which is a joke. But Brian fell for it.

Oh!...and I see Dreadthought

actually finally showed up, too!

Deadhead! So nice of you to think of me, but if you ever think I'm "afraid" of you.... well, the only thing I can tell you, old man, is you need a serious intervention to reconnect you to reality.

Because that would be like a bull moose being afraid of a cockroach.

(I re-e-e-e-e-ally like that analogy)

"Robert"

VaPat just drew this to my attention.

If you are not, indeed, the infamous "Robert" who has so denigrated the name in common, and by that I mean Roberto the Troll and TH Resident Village Idiot, then I do, indeed, owe you an apology.

Unfortunately, you also followed his usual MO of signing off on the end of your post as "Rob", i.e. "Robert" (diminutive).

So..... if you're not him, you have my humblest apology. I can't think of anything worse than being accused of being Roberto The Dolt.

Robert
BrianR did indeed mistake you for Robert aka Ranger29, wobbie, Kmart Helo pilot, and various and asundry other names. If you click on his underlined name you can go to his blog and contact him there. I will leave him a note there advising him of the mistake. BrianR, despite dreadnaught's opinion, is one of the good guys. He shot from the hip on this one.

...Cont'd
The GOP and the Democratic Party are completely bought out Corporate whores. Their policies are designed to secure the debt and profits of Corporate America at taxpayers' expense, a la Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Prescription Drug Benefit, AIDS drugs for Africa(every year lately), airlines bailout, Chrysler bailout, Wall Street bailouts, national healthcare, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac bailout, and the list gets bigger and BIGGER every time I turn my head around. They use such sugary sweet electioneering "themes" as "Compassionate Conservatism" to disguise their corporate welfare, socialist intentions. They now have the unmitigated gall and audacity to sneak Illegal Immigration legislation not ONCE BUT TWICE under the radar in hopes that We The People would just miss it entirely, and they can once again escape culpability for their eternally incessant whoredom. They think nothing of running up our national debt like an American Taxpayers' Express credit card. Voting for Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb every 4 years will only continue your own national suicide, and you will have no one else to blame but yourselves for continuing this madness. These guys are not running for Main Street America; they're running for "K" Street America!!! How Goddamned stupid must one be to continue to vote for these 2 parties that have played us and CONTINUE TO PLAY US like a flute? The GOP has patently demonstrated that it did not learn one thing at all from 2006 except that maybe they need to be more stealthy about their true intentions next time around. If this article points out anything, it is that the longer these millionaires stay in DC, the more out of touch they become with Mainstream America. New government should be the battle cry of every American, but if you want "CHANGE", you will NEVER get it with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb as Hell.

Conservatives Have Many Reasons to Vote
for OTHER candidates. Vote Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party in 2008. Look at it this way: Even if McCain loses, you haven't wasted your vote one bit because either way we're screwed with these two bozos. The GOP with their mouthpieces, Rush Bimbo, Sean Insanity, and even Michael Rubbage, is intentionally obscuring the fact that McCain will open the borders wide open. They want to divert your attention. They are anything BUT Conservatives in their shameless support for the GOP Corporate Welfare Socialist Party. It's a given that Iran and al Qaeda have operatives and cells in this country waiting for orders for mass destruction. They have come over our southern border thanks to these same bums in DC who will be skewered by the American People once the American People are attacked and slaughtered needlessly at the hands of these greedy unscrupulous lawyer bums and their Corporate masters.

Pretty good so far

Over many years I've learned that free advice comes out of nowwhere and usually leads nowhere.

McCain's doing quite all right, I would estimate. He's unflappable and the country's taking notice.

His opponent raised a 30 to 1 advantage in campaign cash. He was endorsed by Kennedy, by Kerry, by Oprah, by Hollywood, by our "youth" and by the Lamestream media.

He's a rockstar and famous all over the world. Even HAMAS is on his bandwagon!

Why isn't he crushing this election? How come McCain's looking stronger every day?

Because Obama has deeper FLAWS than were apparent over the primary season! Suddenly HIS STITCHES are all showing and he can't talk them away.

McCain was despised by his own party and here we now have him; safe at third base. What has happened to that other "base" --the one what couldn't be impressed by any RINO? HE COVERED IT.

Let's hit a roller into the election infield. He'll slide HOME and that's the ballgame! Oh Doctor! You can hang a star on that one!

Agreed
McCain's model should not be those losers Ford and Dole McCain needs to do more to emulate Goldwater. Now there was a man who told it like it is (or at least like he beleived it was).

To Authors Grabar and Birdnow
Have you ever been at a John McCain Townhall meeting or small campaign gathering? I don't think so given your article. For those of us who have seen John McCain up close, what happened at Saddleback was no surprise. What is a surprise is that your article was put out after Saddleback.

To sir aslan
Did you watch the Saddleback forum? If you did, you weren't paying attention. If Ronald Reagan were around, he would tell you that he (Reagan) supports John McCain 100% and would say in a persuasive way that John McCain's life experiences dwarf everyone else including that socialist Obama.

Great Article Mary and Brian
Welcome back Mary...you pretty much have summed up what McCain needs to do. Its unfortunate that we don't have any candidates with the courage of their convictions who are running for the Presidency in either of the major parties.

McCain is like a little ship on the ocean sailing around from port to port with nothing to anchor him down. Conviction is a big anchor and if he did have the Courage of his Convictions he would be focused and steadfast..a steady hand on the wheel of the ship in times of trouble and peril sailing through those storms or either anchored as it sails into port...a permanent symbol of Americas strength and courage that is anchored to our core beliefs and values as a nation...he would be anchored to Truth. Reagan was so great when it came to communicating with Americans. He empathized with their struggles of daily life. Its easy to see why so many people miss him so much.

you're missing the point baseballdoc
McCain's numbers shot up because he was clear, concise and to the point in the Warren debate.

Her point was that McCain can't play it safe like Dole or Ford.

Might I suggest one other name?

DICK CHENEY, Press Chief?

THIS ELECTION IS NOT ABOUT MCCAIN

.....It is about OBAMBI ...MCCAIN might as well be a cardboard cut-out ...

.....The more OBAMBI talks ...the more he shoots himself in the foot ...the more his ineptitude and kooky ideas become apparent ...the more his MARXIST ties and backgroud come to light ...all MCCAIN has to do to win the election is to stand up and breathe .....COLOSSUS

PT.2 Subject WAS keeping straight talk.
AGAIN, The subject WAS keeping straight talk Express on track, and what McCain needs to do from here to build and the recent momentum he has gooten and the erroding away of support for Obama...

As I posted above, I had a suggestion, that maybe, just maybe McCain could really help himself if 7 to 14 days AFTER the GOP Convention if he would announce at that time major players in a McCain Administration.

Have them layout theirs & the administration policies, at this time, would show leadship & the ability to hit the ground running for a McCain administration.

THAT SHOULD HELP MCCAIN & TRANSLATE INTO MANY VOTES...

Here would be some picks that I would not mind seeing:

1. Sec. Defense = Duncan Hunter
2. National Security Advisor = Joe Lieberman
3. Sec. of State = Fred Thompson
4. HomeLand Security = Condi Rice
5. Nat.Dir.Intell./head of CIA = Colin Powell
6. Head of Joint Chiefs = Gen. Petraus

Do YOU have a LIST ? ? ?

PT.1 Subject WAS keeping straight talk.
The subject WAS keeping straight talk Express on track, and what McCain needs to do from here to build and the recent momentum he has gooten and the erroding away of support for Obama...

BUT, it has been reduced to a snarky squabble over illegal aliens instead...

Again, as I have posted here, and I think that most will agree, NO ONE wants to through out immigrants who have come here legally, respecting our laws & culture, and have been willing to become AMERICAN CITIZENS by following the proper laws and poceedures to do so.

Again I think, that most would have no problem of allowing those that are here to have a pathway to become citizens, as long as they DID NOT get to cut others in line to do so...

That only means they would have a longer wait than tose already in the legal process is all.

It does NOT bar them from coming here legally though.

BUT, those coming here ILLEGALY, un-willing to abide by the laws to get in line, to respect our laws, to become part of the AMERICAN culture, and legally become citizens SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN OR TO STAY.

That is why McCain has now agreed to "Border Security First", THEN "Patway to Citizenship"

THIS IS AS IT SHOULD BE...

Well, Roberto

One of our posts will still be here in the morning.

Guess which one.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Hahahaha, this is hilarious!

Great post, Robert
You're tired, so am I. I'm going on 71 years!

We have common ground. I am an enemy of socialism and of the welfare state. I supported Reagan, both Bushes, I supported RUMSFELD, believe it or not!

But with all due respect; I also have observed --on account of many lingering illegal immigration arguments; a great number of unjust and foolish developments taking place in this prideful conservative "base" of ours." Unwilling to wait and see! Terrific intolerance!

It became tantamount to hate speech against an ethnic group; Mexican illegals. There's entirely too much alarmism in our country. The flames of protest have been fanned by talk radio and over many months reached a fever pitch.

I know we have problems. But active hatred won't solve them. It makes US seem like an unhealthy, unwholesome and CHEAP bunch, in the eyes of good people all over the world. Us; Republicans!

Now, with McCain we have a chance to turn that perception around. Give instead of demand! Understand instead of argue. Love instead of hate. If I attract hatred, let it be. I'm unimportant. But I'm going to speak out until I die.

dear folks:
I'm happy with the way this turns out.

A few hard-headed Americans have been forced to look inside themselves. One or two here are very disturbed, these are the ones I've gone out to reach.

I say things that have to be said. Our Right wing has been too smug. Our well-meaning conservatives need a wake-up call. It's coming up to election day; we need every vote.

If it means a lot of good people here will hate me, I have no problem with that. I'm expendable.

Our country must carry on the fight under conservatism, not liberalism. But with justice and human compassion. We wouldn't find that in Obama's socialist land.

Nobody may care for what I said. It was sensible, it figures to work for us. Stop the hate. Help one another. McCain is a leader for this coming new phase; take him on his word.

Too bad for all of us
The big concern with a McCain presidency - a concern which I am surprised has not been vocalized more fully - is that the U.S. will lurch from crisis to crisis, confrontation to confrontation, whether it be with Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, etc. The danger is that McCain's pundit-like rhetoric will entrap the U.S. in descending spiral of foreign policy brinksmanship. Just think about the very likely scenario of McCain giving Iran/Russia a rhetorical ultimatum and Iran/Russia ignoring it. Now we are stuck - either we lose face by not following through on our threats or we follow through and go to war. We can't afford such a reckless approach after the last eight years. For the next eight we need a president not a pundit.

For anyone who had eyes to see, Georgia was a perfect illustration of this. He totally flew off the handle, ramping the situation up dramatically with his unstable rhetoric.

the problem is, Americans are childish and simplistic, and McCain appeals to their basic nature. We will never, ever, have a really good president in this country because we don't know how to elect one.

Dreadnaught
I see now why most posters are nasty to you. I tried to be civil, even though you and I both know you are the one who is wrong.

Civility is not in your vocabulary,so I am finished with you. I will let you know, however,I will write anything, anytime anywhere I please, but not to you.

You cannot be reasoned with . Many have tried and you are a hopeless case and I have no time to waste on the likes of you. You do not respect our immigration laws. What other laws do you not respect?

dreadnaught

Sorry we tried Amnesty back in 1986 and it caused the current problem.

Attrition thru Enforcement of the Immigration laws will SLOWLY over time SOLVE this illegal alien problem.

Already over 1 million illegals have left the USA since last year. Give it 10 to 20 years and this problem will be solved.

No need for Amnesty.

Deadnuts, This One's For You

Yes, hispanics can certainly be as American as you or I, I know some. However, Mexicans are not Americans, Guatamalans are not Americans, Hondurans are not Americans, El Salvadorans are not Americans. They can be, IF they apply for legal entry and follow our EXISTING path to citizenship. When someone lets himself into your house without your permission, do you consider him a guest? I don't. Invasion is not the right term, but what is happening is NOT immigration. People do not have an unlimited right to "migrate" from their country to ours. I know many immigrants from all over the world and it is especially for them that I oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. Some have waited years in refugee camps in southeast asia for their chance to become Americans. They respect this country, our laws, language and culture. All of them took the time, effort and expense to do it the right way. We should honor all those who have and not insult their sacrifices with another amnesty. The amnesty of 1986 has resulted in 10 times the number of illegal aliens and a general disregard for our laws. Another amnesty would be equally successful.

VP HUCKABEE HELPS MCCAIN WIN in 08'
MIKE HUCKABEE IS A FIGHTER AND ONE OF THE GREATEST COMMUNICATORS OF OUR TIME!

Most American's DO NOT favor abortion. Nor do they wish to align themselves with factions dedicated in butchering innocent babies inside and outside the womb. And NO, that baby is NOT the women's body; it is a separate body with a separate heartbeat and separate brain activity. And YES, the unborn baby FEELS PHYSICAL PAIN as it is being ripped out of what should be the safest place on earth - mother's womb!

The Planned Parenthood abortionists lie to young women all the time just to get their money, while those ex-mothers and ex-fathers suffer emotional distress as they realize everyday that they have just allowed a child killer to convince them, not only to take their money, but also to kill their precious little baby. Abortion STOPS A BEATING HEART and the future of a civilization.

People weep and wail over the loss of a High School football player destined for a great professional career who had been gunned down by a random shooter, but yet we will never know the great deficit future generations will suffer for the loss of over 50 million innocent babies in this country alone. Shame on America for tolerating this horror ... and shame on its citizens for tolerating their personal complacency. Pro-choice is a lie - Babies do not choose to die!

Away with this archaic freakish, barbaric practice! It will soon be done away with, along with these fake pro-abortion polling numbers! As long as the president chooses judicial nominees his Vice-president better be pro-Life if he is ever going to win an election.

Cumming Georgia, is that?

I did some study.

You live where so many negroes were lynched back some years, they stopped keeping count. Are you a Klansman? Was your Pappy?

When we need counsel from the Klan counties of Georgia, we'll ask for it, Sir.

to the pretend patriot of virginia
One more time; mr. racist agitator:

"Every time we try to move heaven and earth to dislodge these people, (Mexican illegals) we act like racists; which reinforces their hatred for our Party. It's a vicious circle. Better to calm down and impress on Latin voters our humanity and Christian fellowship. They're mostly Christians, after all."

I posted this earlier;

Since you keep posting the same trash over & over, I figured you take what I repeat. You're a pretend patriot.

Patriots are not klansmen, racial haters or white supremacists.

Oh, please! All you guys haggling over

McCain's VP pick, as if that made some sort of difference!

McCain could pick Lieberman and McCain could slightly rewrite the lyrics to the Soviet "Internationale" and use that as his theme song - and you all would STILL vote for him! Because your vote is not a vote FOR McCain but a vote AGAINST Obama.

sometimes you overdo this

Dear Rowley, with all due respect:

Why do you beat the dead horse? Did you even THINK I was in some FOG about the legalities? Are you here to instruct others on law, who keeps it or who breaks it?

It may stick in your young craw; but this law is a moot point by about 12 million people. It's now IRRELEVANT-- !

You may wish to blow up my arguments by stating the obvious, but my arguments make more sense than your arguments!

Yours over-simplify a situation that went out of control. Mine seeks only to bring back normality by this CONCESSION. I do not deny it's a concession brought on by necessity. I want the survival of our Republican Party above all.

Mind, I respect your opinions. But I think we'll elect McCain by all pulling together. Stop doing these editorials every day which only divide us.

Whose Country Is It?

We the People of the United States of America have the right to have our borders and our laws respected and enforced.

Citizens of other countries illegally in our country have no right to demand anything from our government. They most certainly have the right to petition the governments of their home countries for change if they are unhappy with their home country. If they want to be Americans, we have a path to citizenship, more generous than any other nation, and it starts in their home country.

We need to insist on the equal protection, application and enforcement of the law or devolve into anarchy. Our Republic only functions if everyone follows the same rules. We should not change the laws to accomodate those breaking them.

If America annouces to the world "We can't stop you, so come on in" with another amnesty, the deluge will be overwhelming. If 3,000 a day didn't get your attention, then wait until it's 10,000 a day. We cannot sustain this influx and survive as a nation. We must speak up and speak to each other about this and not let false claims of racism or bigotry be used to intimidate us into silent assent. America is not Congress' to give away. America belongs to We the People. Speak to your neighbors, speak to your coworkers, but please speak up to your Congressmen and Senators. It's O.K. for us to enforce our laws, no really, it is.

Someone please tell Sen. McCain.

Gerald Ford was an honest and decent man
but I am not sure I could say the same for John McCain. He ran all his Congressional and Senate races as a Conservative and then 'reached' across the isle so fast it gave us whiplash. The Senator has repeatably LIED about McCain Kennedy, he attacks anyone who opposes amnesty with phony charges of racism. His McCain Feingold was a gift to George Soros and the hard left and now the Senator whines about money.

As I truly fear Obama I guess I will vote for McCain, but calling him an honest and decent man is a reach. But then I ran into his bad temper once-the man has a mouth. That was enough. For the first time in forty years I will not send money to a Republican presidential candidate.

Criminal trespassing of our borders.
I notice you have flagged several comments that restate the above issue as offensive. If discussion of criminal acts is offensive, what do you consider as not offensive, biscuit recipes?

The citizens of this country are tired of trespassers entering our country by illegal means. They are even more tired of elected and appointed officials giving away our tax dollars to these criminals. It is a crime! (See nonfeasance, misfeasance, malfeasance, and abetting.)

The citizens of this country need to rise up and start impeaching these elected officials. Start at the bottom and work our way up the the 1600 House.

OK, Just an idea here...

Call me crazy, but I say that McCain should go ahead, say 7 to 14 days after the GOP Convention, and announce major members of his cabinet for his proposed administration using the 7-14 days toset major administration policies in detail, and then go on all the networks & broadcast media to put forward his picks & policies...

Here would be some picks that I would not mind seeing:

1. Sec. Defense = Duncan Hunter
2. National Security Advisor = Joe Lieberman
3. Sec. of State = Fred Thompson
4. HomeLand Security = Condi Rice
5. Nat.Dir.Intell./head of CIA = Colin Powell
6. Head of Joint Chiefs = Gen. Petraus

These are just some ideas for cabinet/agency heads that that I personally like and would love to see in those postions...

This would show that a McCain administration would be far more prepared and experienced to hit the ground running so to speak...

THAT would translate into many votes I think...

What do you think of this idea ? ? ?
Would be your "LIST" here ? ? ?

Pro-abortion VP choices
Pro-abortion VP choices

Now there has been talk by some about McCain possibly picking a "pro-abortion" VP...

The only "weak on abortion" VP choice that I think most conservatives may even possibly/remotely consider would be maybe Guliani...

But, although he may be considered exceptable by some conservatives because of his stances on other issues, I still do NOT think that Guliani would be the best choice for McCain at this point.

JUST my humble opinion as a pro-life Christian conservative here.

However, I could be wrong...

Secure first, Then new pathway OK.
Dreadnaught,

I feel you mis-understand me here.

It does not matter where an immigrant comes from as long as they immigrate LEGALLY.

I have NO PROBLEM with REVIZING the current immigration laws to EXPEDITE and better allow MORE for those that LEGALLY want to be American citizens to do so.

Those willing to do what ever it takes to LEGALLY become citizens of our great nation are WECOMED, which should include getting in line BEHIND those who are already there legally in line.

WHY SHOULD THEY GET "SPECIAL STATUS" TO CUT IN FRONT OF OTHERS WHO ARE ALREADY THERE IN LINE TO BECOME CITIZENS LEGALLY WAITING TOO ? ? ?

THAT IS UNFAIR & UN-AMERICAN...

NOW, I am advocating, AFTER SECURING our borders FIRST, both north & south, we can then allow under a FAIR new immigration policy that gives them a faster and more inclusive pathway to citizenship.

BUT WE HAVE TO STOP THE FLOOD OF "ILLEGALS" FIRST.

ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL regardless of ethinic heritage.

I think that THIS is what most AMERICANS believe is right & fair to ALL on this issue.

dreadnaught
When you speak in favor of amnesty, you speak in favor of illegals. If one is here illegally,he is breaking the law.

There should be no amnesty. They should return to the country of origin and apply as everyone else. Why should they be allowed to stay, just because they are already here?

If I have a relative in Germany who has been trying to come here legally, why should we be separated for years just because he has applied legally? Makes no sense.

I know you have your reasons and they are valid for you. I just don't agree. A lawbreaker is just that,a lawbreaker. They should not be rewarded for breaking the law.

just to set you two straight

Rowley,

Don't count on me to "speak for illegals," it's not true. I favor apprehending & deporting of illegal entrants.

I support our laws. But I favor amnesty for the so-called 12 million already established in the U.S.--that is; who ever QUALIFIES. There should be benchmarks.

And I speak for our Spanish-speaking legal American hispanics. THEY VOTE. I worry that we've lost their vote because they perceive the GOP as the party of racism. I don't agree with this; but I can understand the impression they get.

To Sam:

It bothers me more that we're "rewarding" the Democrat panderers instead of conservatives, by blocking amnesty; and no other avenue is really open to us. Our all-holy Law is already circumvented by more than 9 million Mexicans living here illegally. American hispanics are sympathetic to their southern cousins; and McCain realizes it.

Every time we try to move heaven and earth to dislodge these people, we act like racists; which reinforces their hatred for our Party. It's a vicious circle. Better to calm down and impress on Latin voters our humanity and Christian fellowship. They're mostly Christians, after all.

Your lovely principles, about "not rewarding," and that megillah; do NOT win us elections, Sam. Let's not HAND the White House over to our opponents on the LEFT for a whimsical idea like that.

Just an idea here...

You can always count on Dreadnot to speak for illegals. What part of illegal does he not understand? How can the law cite me for speeding or some petty crime and ignore an illegal who is a law-breaker for crossing the border? The law is the law.

McCain is on target
Currently Sen McCain is ina dead heat electorally with Sen Obama. http://electoral-vote.com/
264 to 261 with 13 ties. the ties being the electoral votes of VA which is still polling at a tie. 7 other states show a bare lead for republicans and could be considered swing with two states being barely democrat (14 electoral votes).

His numbers have been going steadly UP in the electoral polls and he is doing better then past presidents compared at the same time frame.

I don't think he is SPUTTERING along. His performance at the last debate was GREAT and he is gaining momentum. A lot will depend on the VP choice but unless he picks someone who hurts him, (Sen Lieberman or Tom Ridge etc)I don't think the VP nomination will move the vote more then a few points.

Electorally the best VP for him would be Minnesota Gov Tim Pawlenty since he has a current very slight lead in that states 10 electoral votes, but anything that could help bring FLA or OHIO or VA in to the fold would help more.

Just my opinion

Dear Sam and Rowley:

As to amnesty; I believe he can push it safely; since the Latino vote has become more important in general elections as the years have passed. It now outnumbers the African-Americans' and Latins are socially conservative and pro-military as a whole. McCain's a southwesterner and KNOWS this. I think he HAS to pass amnesty for those people;

Otherwise they'll continue as before: voting for Democrats! Rowley-- it's long past time you thought outside the box! Amnesty MUST happen.

BORDER SECURITY & CONTROL FIRST, then I will NOT have any problem with REVIZING immigration laws, NOT AMNESTY, to create a pathway for LEGAL immigration...

Illegal aliens should NOT get ahead in line of those who have LEGALLY imigrated to the U.S.

"Illegals" should NOT be REWARDED for their "illegal" actions...

"Legal" immigrants should NOT be punished, or pushed back in line for their "legal" actions or cut infront of by the "illegals" either...

SAM T
I agree with the VP's you named. Mark Sanford of S.C.is a good, conservative governor with a good reputation.

McCain is no rookie

Dear Sam and Rowley:

The thing that reassures me is; unlike Obama, McCain has a lifetime's experience. He's seen candidates come and go.

He wouldn't be so backward as to name an abortion enabler or a Democrat as his Vice President.

As to amnesty; I believe he can push it safely; since the Latino vote has become more important in general elections as the years have passed. Furthermore; we HAVEN'T lost our sovreignty. THAT is a shibboleth true only to a FRINGE of the GOP on the extreme Right! They aren't voting for McCain even if he grows wings and plays them Stephen Foster melodies on a harp. WE MUST WRITE OFF THE WHITE SUPREMACISTS!

for dreadnaught
There's more:

Obama's style is beginning to wear pretty thin.

Bill Clinton was able to connect with ordinary voters in his speeches.

But a typical Obama speech sounds like this:

"We are the ones we have been waiting for....The audacity of hope....Real change is possible....The fierce urgency of now....You can approach this from either the scientific perpective or the theological perspective....You have it within you....But either way, the conclusion to which I am drawn is that the issue is above my pay grade...."

That kind of meandering pap sounds cool if you're from Harvard, Berkeley or Europe.

But it's NOT going to go over with coal miners in West Virginia or factory workers in Michigan. McCain gives a straight answer to a straight question, and they like that.

for reader
reader writes: "McCain should have been acting like a conservative for the past 10 years in the senate if he thinks he's going to get my vote. "

A staunch conservative candidate, like Duncan Hunter, would lose all the other voters EXCEPT you.

The polls show that Obama would beat Romney in a landslide. Obama would beat Fred Thompson in a landslide. Obama would beat just about EVERY OTHER Republican in a landslide except Rudy Giuliani. McCain and Rudy were the GOP's only real hope this year.

The Republican brand has become too tarnished in the public's mind. You're a minority in public opinion now. Most of the rest of the public feels it's time for a change in leadership.

The ONLY reason McCain has a shot, is that he's viewed as so different from the usual Republicans. He has a chance at winning precisely because he's not one of you.

And that dynamic won't change until the GOP can repair its brand with the public. Which will take years.

Right now, we don't have years. We have 3 months.

One problem, Joycey and Sam:

Duncan Hunter cannot help McCain win in California.

The logic of any presidential election is too compelling: a running-mate must help the Presidential candidate to win his home state. Plus, it's always imperative the state be in our South. I look for that person somewhere between Texas and Virginia. California won't even be considered by the McCain advisors. I look for Hunter to become a cabinet secretary if his name came up at all.

First we have to get McCain elected.

END QUOTE...

I do agree we first must get McCain elected, BUT picking a pro-abortion, pro gay-marrage VP choice WILL NOT DO THAT.

I also agree about the southern states, and THAT is why I like a governor like Bob Riley from Alabama, or Hailey Barbour of Mississippi, at one time I even thought that J.C. Watts or Michael Steele could also help with conservative black vote as well.

Oh yes, and I too agree with you Rowly about the border protection & illegal aleins issue too...

reader
That’s what’s great about America. You can waste your vote on anybody you want. Why don’t you vote for the Gay Whales who Hug Trees Candidate? Thankfully Texas is populated with a majority of Conservative Republicans who love their country and don’t wish to see it weakened by a President Obama. McCain may not be perfect, but just the chance that we could see two new Supreme Court Justices in the next four years means I’ll be voting for him.

SAM T
I agree with your proposed speech for McCain. He should also state his intention of reclaiming our sovereignty by stopping illegal aliens from crossing our borders, both north and south and allowing no amnesty.

Even if McCain chooses Hunter

One problem, Joycey and Sam:

Duncan Hunter cannot help McCain win in California. I only wish that were possible. We know the gays and radical leftists with all their university polecats have a lock on California.

Duncan Hunter is the best choice for VP and then president in 2012.

Hi Joycey,

Glad you mentioned Duncan Hunter...

Before they left the race, behind my peronal choice of Fred Thompson as my top choice, Duncan Hunter was a very close second choice for me...

I TOO like Duncan Hunter VERY MUCH as he and Fred Thompson were and are very very close on policy views & stances...

I believe that a McCain/Hunter ticket could possibly be a strong winning ticket...

Propably, howwever, the weak-anti-miltary media would try and make it out to be a "war-mongering" militaristic ticket, and do everything they could to destroy any chance such a great ticket would have & would be for the future security of America, & that is a shame...

I agree with Rowly
McCain should have been acting like a conservative for the past 10 years in the senate if he thinks he's going to get my vote. It's too late for him. I won't vote for him or Obama. Even if he "said" what conservatives wanted to hear, I can't trust him. I'll vote for the person other than the picks of the two main parties.

Duncan Hunter
McCain does not need a VP that will overshadow him.

When they take a few moments to find out they will be more than happy with the choice. He is not a showboat he is just an excellent man in every way.

this one is exraordinary

In a number of ways this presidential election is extraordinary. The author here seems to see it as if it were "been there, done that" and we know then what has to be done. Generally speaking, of course; her concerns about McCain's drive are justified.

BUT:

He's extraordinary: a bona fide American hero. Yes, so was Bob Dole. However Dole was running against Slick Willie, NOT:

NOT an African-American from Chicago with a number of HUGE albatrosses hanging round his neck:

Rev. Wright, (and Louis Farrakhan, don't forget.)

Ayers or the Weather Underground and his gun moll.

Rezhko the real estate crook.

A monicker too close to Osama for even Ted Kennedy not to confuse.

Whereas, McCain seems a candidate a propos to many Mexican-American/Hispanic conservatives; who are anxious about the illegal immigrant brouhaha; and could be voting for him in large numbers.

He is NOT anathema to many Democrats; who know he's worked across party lines in the past; and was even a cordial friend of Hillary Clinton's.

That naturally means he could count on a portion of that left-of-center vote which neither Jerry Ford nor Bob Dole nor the Bushes would have even DREAMED of capturing.

Best of all; McCain is a wartime dynamo; explicitly rallying us to VICTORY over militant Islamofascists! One of his ringing statements the last time he spoke to America was: "I'll find and capture (or kill) Osama bin Laden if I have to follow him to the GATES of HELL!"

Obambi looks rather vulnerable this November against his EXTRAORDINARY opponent from the GOP. He has that look of eagles!

McCain and straight talk
If McCain is giving us straight talk on abortion he will not choose a pro abortion running mate. To me straight talk means being forthright and honest.

PICK A CONSERVATIVE-FEDERALIST VP
What McCain needs to DO to get the vote...

McCain needs to pick a SOLID CONSERVATIVE / FEDERALIST VP running mate, cause many of us true conservatives are still wary of McCain's less than stellar-Conservative record...

I personally wish that Fred Thompson as probably the best FEDERALIST / CONSERVATIVE former candidate out there, would re-consider being McCain's VP, but that as I know is only wishful thinking.

Maybe Romney, or a Michael Steele, or a Governor like Bob Riley, or Hailey Barbour, or someone like that may help him some as well...

“My Friends & fellow Americans,”
What McCain needs to say to voters:
QUOTE:

“My Friends & fellow Americans,”

“I am asking for your vote and support to guarantee the rights of ALL Americans, including the right to life, and freedom from the threat of murder, whether by terrorist, totalitarian tyrants, or even on demand abortionist… “

“I am asking you to vote for me as a man and a leader who has been given through the grace of GOD, the experiences, knowledge, and leadership skills, plus my convictions of God’s guidance & teachings, to know the evident evils of this world, & the determination to fight against that evil..

I am asking you to support the notion that evil MUST BE CONFRONTED & DEFEATED, and can NEVER be allowed to be compromised with though nuance or negotiation as some might want to do.

We as a nation will need to seek out own energy resources that we need to become energy independent and secure, which will include drilling here and now while researching & developing newer renewable & bio-fuels, clean coal, and YES, nuclear energy as well, to STOP the transfer of American dollars to potentially unfriendly Islamic & tyrannical totalitarian nations & dictatorships.

We will need to build up our military and economic strength to meet the future threats to America from our rivals & enemies.

“Straight Talk” is always best versus a false sense of “Nuance”, vagueness, or ambiguity.

As always, I’ll continue to use “Straight Talk” in dealing with our friends, our enemies, and especially the American people.

As John McCain, this is my pledge to the American people.

END QUOTE.

McCain
McCain cannot erase the last ten years in the senate. He made many enemies in his own party. If he could undo some of that damage,he would be ten points higher than at present.

We expect loyalty from one of our own.We got the opposite. The first thing Mccain needs to do is admit his mistakes and act as if he wants conservatives'votes.

He is head and shoulders above 'the messiah',as he is. He needs to give some indication that he knows what conservatives want and they MAY fall in line.
