Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

We know who you’re talking about, Barack Obama, when you talk about Pennsylvania and the Midwest, about small towns where the jobs have left. We know who you’re talking about when you talk about those who “get bitter” and “cling to guns or religion.”

You’re talking about “those people.”

You’re talking about white people who have neither the family connections nor the racial credentials to gain entrance to the world that you inhabit. Many of the people you’re talking about are those whose parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe who came to these places to work in steel mills, coal mines, and factories. We know the code words.

You’re talking about people whose culture is little known. We have been pretty quiet. We never tried to impose our culture on everyone. We never insisted on putting pictures of ourselves in our native dress into schoolbooks or mandating that our stories and songs be part of the curriculums.

We tried to maintain our culture without government aid, by forming our own churches and groups, and building Polish, Ukrainian, and Slovenian halls.

We never wore buttons declaring “Slav Power” or grouped together for purposes of intimidation or violence.

The power we asked for was the power of the paycheck which we earned in factories, steel mills, coal mines, or by cleaning houses. Yet, we were taken aside and told that because of affirmative action it was no use trying to advance off the assembly line; we were told in “diversity workshops” that people of color had to be promoted over more qualified white people. I know this, Barack, because I have family members and friends who worked in factories.

We used to trudge in to work and change into work clothes, like my father did. He began by knowing only one word of English, “Okay,” which he found to be the most useful one in the language. When the boss man handed him a broom or pointed to a piece to be welded, he fairly leapt to the task. My uncles were injured in construction and mining accidents, and went back to work.

But what did we get for that, Barack? We paid cash for our houses and kept impeccable yards, yet saw the value of our homes plummet after marauding hoodlums came into our neighborhoods in riots that were celebrated by the intelligentsia in Manhattan penthouses, who saw such violence as justified expressions of outrage over past discrimination.

We went to public schools in those same neighborhoods only to be accosted for our skin color and the presumed “privilege” that teachers said we had. Rather than teach us what was good and beautiful about Western Civilization and the country to which our parents had fled, teachers gave us Marxist nonsense, if they bothered to teach at all. Our schoolmates saw the evening news, mimicked their elders by wearing “Black Power” buttons and felt justified in roughing the white kid who didn’t seem tough. Because we were “privileged”—despite washing our fathers’ sooty work clothes while our mothers went off to clean offices and houses in the suburbs—we were not eligible for scholarships, not even to the Catholic schools. Teachers never cut us any slack. Guidance counselors told us to be secretaries or work in the factory, despite our volunteering and demonstration of academic abilities. Our brothers, cousins, and uncles went off to fight in Vietnam, while those from your class took up arms against their campus administrators.

True, we had our problems, as all people do, with such things as alcoholism and family violence, but we handled those ourselves, and never blamed “society” or a history of oppression. Still, many of us did carry legacies from the old country, of hunger and persecution, of watching family members and villagers murdered by atheistic regimes. So we were grateful for the opportunity to work and buy our own little patches of the American Dream.

We were happy to use a welding torch, shovel, or broom to get them. We didn’t insist that we should all get college degrees. We didn’t have our documents translated for us or get bilingual instruction. If we didn’t know English we made sure our children did and we relied on them.

Your white friends in San Francisco, Barack, probably had cleaning women like my mother (and me when I accompanied her and then had my own cleaning jobs from age 12). As white people from a certain class and with certain connections, your donors knew that their futures would be secure because of their inheritances and the connections they could make in the media, politics, and business. In fact, it would benefit them in the world of “radical chic” to hang around those like you and support your policies. (Great opportunity to be photographed next to a black person!)

Your black friends there, like your wife, see no end to the amount that this country owes them because of what happened to their ancestors. It makes no difference that many of the whites in previous generations also had experienced persecution and hunger and worked in dangerous, dirty, and degrading jobs. Or that blacks and Native Americans were among the slave owners.

In fact, you and those wealthy donors sneer at white people who have had to do manual labor and who have paid for tuition at community colleges with the money earned that way, while our classmates received special scholarships and government grants—from our taxes.

You sneer at those like us who put our faith in God and not in those like you who would presume to know what’s good for us and tell us what to do with our money and our children, and leave us with no ability to defend ourselves.

Well, Barack, coming from your Ivy League world, you would not know much about us. You would not have learned that because we come from people who, rather than letting their communist benefactors redistribute the food, burned the crops in their little fields before they were forcibly “collectivized.” In Slovenia, they fought Tito’s Partisans from the woods and held mass at night when the Communists banned church services. They remember what it’s like to be hungry, ill, and living in little more than huts, while Marshall Tito and his communist cronies lived in villas. Now you live in a Chicago mansion and sneer at those like us who simply want to keep and defend our little three-bedroom ranches. You don’t know what it’s like to have family members die for the right to attend mass.

I know your liberal cronies, Barack; they make me check off my skin color on job applications and ask me during job interviews of how I teach multiculturalism, yet don’t know where Slovenia is on the world map. They couldn’t care less about my culture, nor about Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, or Lithuanian culture. Your supporters often feel free to mock my Slovenian heritage in letters and comments on the Internet when they disagree with me. I guess it’s like being called a “dumb Polack”—something that has never gained quite the opprobrium of other ethnic epithets.

See, Barack, we know the system: Some are more “equal” than others.

And we know how you really feel about the “proletariat.” We know this from our experience either directly or as an inheritance from our parents and grandparents. And that is why we came to America.

Addendum: Many of my non-European correspondents, like those who came from Cuba, agree—as their letters to me indicate.

Beautifully done. Thank you.

An additional thought
I wish I could add to the brilliant commentary by Ms. Graber but there is no more to be said.

In keeping with her perspective, one other thing comes to mind:

I wish I could be as confident as some with regard to how the electorate will respond to the almost inevitability that Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for president. Evaluating the full court press by the mainstream liberal media for Obama and its ability to overpower the opposition of the new media alternative, it is unclear just what fly-over Americans really know about the Messiah.

The campaign to trample the Bush presidency into the mud, to blame the president for every stubbed toe and strip him of credit for any success has been effective. Most likely, the majority of the voting public, the majority that has neither the time nor the inclination to spend a lot of time analyzing partisan politics, will gravitate to the scam of “hope and change” that has been perpetrated upon them. They will reap the consequences of the socialistic constraints of their decision.

Americans are not a losing lot however, we sometimes learn our lessons the hard way but once learned, we do not forget. Should Barack Obama in fact become the next president of the United States, it will most likely be the last time a Democrat will occupy the White House in the lifetimes of many.

Apologies
Sorry for the missed typo and apologies to Ms. "Grabar" for mispelling her name.

Bout time
This side gets its voice heard.
I have heard the other side for over 40 years.

This one has been sent to the back of the bus, and
Mary Grabar is my Rosa Parks.

I hope this is not the last of such articles.

Bitter?
I don't know if bitter is the right word, I think Angry is more apt. I'm not angry because I don't have any government help, I'm angry because of the Government. I'm angry at the govenrment for making the field unequal. I'm angry because I can't find a job because I'm not Black, despite my two MBA's. I'm angry because Blacks have been given more than any other race in America and yet they stand up and say things like "G-d damn America". I'm angry because Blacks won't work, they want it given to them. I'm tired of racists Blacks calling me names and blaming me for their failings.

Obama why are you calling for equality but you live in a million dollar mansion, where is our part or do you want to keep yours but take ours to give away. I'm tired of sacrificing for liberals mistakes. I refuse to sacrifice for global warming crap. Just as we have a chance to make it, along comes liberals and take it all away to give to someone else. NO MORE. Your right about one thing, it's time for a change alright, it's time to lock up every Marxist liberal government thief and to make a new government that respects our God given rights. Obama you and people like you are the problem, we don't need any more Marxist liberals in government, you've already done too much, now go away.

Those People
Of course Mr. Obama knows nothing about “those people.” This is what liberals think of anyplace outside of their control: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=19813

It is old, but relevant. Also a warning, if you have high blood pressure do not read this.

Bitter comment By Barack Obama
I am dumbfounded by the number of "professionals" who are so anxious to get out their own propaganda that they don't even bother to get the facts on this story. They take a few snippets and run with it. You are entirely wrong about what Obama said and how he said it.

I will e-mail you the entire contents from someone else who was at the fund raiser. Let's see if you have the moxie to apologize to your readers.

Your piece seems to be more about your hatred of Liberals which to you is okay. Can we ever get to the truth in our media? I will send you the article.

Well said
Well said Ms. Graber (Miss, Mrs.-trying to be PC here)

Senator Barack Hussein Obama and Michelle Hussein Obama play the victim card well. That caroon character of a preacher, Jeremiah Wright, does indeed speak for a large percentage of Chicago's inner city's blacks which is why Senator Barack Hussein Obama and Michelle Hussein Obama attend; they knew he needed the exposure. Notice how the crowd goes wild when the cartoon character screams.

No, I guess we can not all get along. Miss Hillary, Senator Barack Hussein Obama and his friend William Ayers and the enite left wing of the Democratic Party want to take us places millions of us do not want to go. But I shall cling to my God, Guns and Country without bitterness, yet, and work to defeat William Ayers and Senator Barack Hussein Obama and Michelle Hussein Obama or Miss Hillary this November.

These effete snobs refer to me as a hillbilly. That is all well and good; despite some bad press we did all right.I don't recall any of us throwing grandma under the train.

I am angry also
I am angry because after buying the arguments that Conservative leadership was good for the country, we are all seeing the mess from Iraq on the cheap, Katrina, the sub-prime mess, and $4.00 a gallon gas.

As Obama said recently this the only recovery since WWII when the wages of middle class and working class prople did not go up. Meanwhile in the rarified office of CEO and Hedge fund managers the champaign has been flowing. Only a conservative would think it is morally OK for a CEO to pay a lower rate of taxes then his secretary. Only in a Republican administration would you have tax breaks for Humvee buyers, but not for drivers who buy Hybrids. Tax breaks for companies that take jobs overseas. Free trade for companies who can shop the lowest wages, but not consumers who want to buy their prescription drugs from Canada.

Love the troops, baloney remember the backrupcy bill their was amendment to exempt national guard families with a soldier on active duty, who defeated it the Republicans.

one of the best columns on TH ever
Thanks Mary Grabar... written with an eloquence worthy of an English Ph.D... cogent, salient, and moving. She speaks inconvenient truths that the PC MSM ilk so often choose not to see-- or cannot discern.

My daughter is now graduating Phi Beta Kappa in English also from UGA, which has become one of the top state universities in America competitively and academically. Mary Grabar is a worthy representative.

Obama The Carpetbagger
Obama is a carpetbagger. Obama has no link to slavery, his Black father was from Kenya, born and raised there. No one in his family was ever a slave in this country, Obama was raised in Hawaii and he has no link to the civil rights movement and never experienced discrimination like many Blacks have in our Southern states. Obama is not even Black, except by choice; he chose to be Black for political and economic gain. Here read the official definition of a Carpetbagger: a nonresident or new resident who seeks private gain from an area often by meddling in its business or politics.
I wish our true Blacks could see through this phony.

Elitists
Republicans are very good at cultivating the impression of being for average folks. But when they get to voting its looking out for the elites every time.

And when you call them on their hyporacy the best they can do is to agrue that it helps small businesses when they know full well that small business who derive a tiny benefit are the flea of the dog of the real elites they are trying to protect. When really corners they say you are engaging in class warfare.

Good julescator we HAVE seen the entire transcript and heard the tape. It was on the Huffington Post. Senator Barrack Hussein Obama is indeed a marxist, black nationalist and an elitist snob. And I could care less if his mother was on Food Stamps. So his father, black father, was a gutless punk. Senator Barrack Hussein Obama is indeed a elitist at this point in time and so are you dear child of Perdition. Repent of your evil ways or you will grow up to be a Democrat.

Excellent!
How did you get through a Ph.D. program with these views? I would have thought someone on your committee would have tanked you. Of course you will be called a racist for these comments.

Grabar the elitist
nuff said.

Grabar bitter not Obama:
OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people feel most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...I think they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism (laughter).

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What's the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- close tax loopholes, roll back, you know, the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American. So we'll go down a series of talking points.

Grabar bitter not Obama:
But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.

Mary Grabar - Great Article
Truth is neither negative or positive - it is just truth.

Elitist theorists who like to play with human lives in games of chance are at great risk. The Japanese found out what happens when you wake a "sleeping giant".

Great American patriots of all races, creeds and nationalities will say enough of these ruling elitists.

Americans have a long history of patience and forbearance and a long history of revolution against tyrants.

Obama - Hillary and Power
Obama is a true representative of oppressive power exerted by government.

Hillary is a true representative of oppressive power exerted by government.

They both remind me of a quote:

"If there's anything around here more important than my ego, I want it caught and shot now!"
-------------------------------------------------

Hillary summed up both of their feelings about the American citizen:

"We need to stop worrying about the rights of the individual and start worrying about what is best for society." -- Hillary Clinton

"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." -- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, June 28, 2004.

Right On Grabar
This is by far the most profound and accurate coverage of this elitist, Marxist and very socialist man. You explained in great detail how shallow, naive, and totally narcisstic this man is. Let us hope that his billionaire San Francisco Iran friend finds him a political position in Iran where his "Change" policies will be accepted with open arms, as he will never make it as president.

If a democrat wins the Whitehouse...
If a democrat wins the Whitehouse, and it doesn't really matter which one, and if they continue to control Congress, as it appears they likely will... what will they change? The economy will likely collapse as soon as taxes are increased. We will all get 'free' healthcare - or free remnants of what was once health care. The rich will be taxed until they no longer exist. Companies will be 'saved' or 'bailed out' by the government - and all for a small increase in government oversight and regulation. We will be told what cars to buy, if any are even built in this country again. We will be told the type of lightbulb to use.

And not far behind, in a democrat utopia, we will be told how to vote.

The saddest thing about all of this is... we won't even complain about free health care, taxing the rich, and if it is our employer who is 'bailed out' we will support that too! Like those on welfare, we will become slaves to the government and slaves to our own greed and insecurities. So when they choose all of the candidates for us, and we get to vote for the candidates they choose we won't complain about that either.

Oh wait. They already did that, didn't they?

Proud to be American
Ms. Grabar I agree wholeheartedly with this article. I have first hand knowlege of this subject. I grew up in eastern PA.and have many friends and relatives of Western European descent. They are very proud of thier heritage and also proud to be American. In fact they are some of the most patriotic people I know.I have a good friend who is a first generation immigrant from Slovenia. He came here leagally learned english ,learned a trade, worked hard and is now living the American dream. He also has a illuminated flagpole in his front yard on which he flies Old Glory twentyfour hours a day.Obama can't even be bothered to wear the flag on his lapel!
BTW some of our schools and universities also espouse Marxist nonsense.

Like socialism?
You’ll love Obama!

He’ll bring us the beloved worker’s paradise no other collectivist anywhere in the world was able to implement. We will be happy and contented.

AMEN
One of the best columns I've read. She's saying what we all (except the resident koolaid imbibers) have been thinking for years. I'm first generation on my mothers and second on my Dads. My family came from England to work in the now non existent textile mills, I grew up in a mill owned town (really good place to grow up, not like most mill towns, beautiful homes, parks, and well laid out streets) but my Dad was told when the mill was moving south that he couldn't buy one of those homes because he'd always be a $2.00 taxpayer. (poll tax). Two of my boys joined the Navy to get money for an education as well serve their country. My youngest went to a public college and had to take a semester off to earn tuition after his Dad lost his job..to a carpetbagger no less. He's started up a small business and he doesn't get the perks illegals and minorities get for startups, so he's struggling while getting taxed to death. Anger is the word, and resentment when hearing a smarmy racist arrogant know it all
call us bitter and his so called pagan pastor
curses the country he thinks he's going to be President of. We had no crime to speak of where I live, but with the minorities and illegals, moving here..guess what? And I'm no racist, my adopted son is caucasian, black and puerto rican, and he gets attacked for not being black enough.

Could not have said it better
The only thing I can say is getting Obama or Clinton will be like getting another Jimmy Carter. He should be put in jail for the rest of his natural life for giving aid to the enemy's of America . Obama has a lot of questions to answer if and when the media will ask , like where did you get all your money ? He has never had a job that I have heard of. We know he is a racist because of his inaction's . Pictures are worth a thousand words and so are these inaction's.

earnheart
Haven’t you heard? He’s a “community activist”. Now, if the market doesn’t value a “community activist”, I don’t know what it values.

Thank you
This might be the best column on race and class in America I've ever read. I agree with everything you said am and "bitter" myself. Coming from a background of miners in a small coal town, I saw my own family in what you wrote. The white audience in San Francisco and Obama and let's be honest most Democrats and Republicans haven't got a clue about the reality of working Americans. They are limited to their elite circles of the rich, powerful, and priviledged. But notice their children don't attend public school, go to war, or get passed over in college admissions.

don't know where Slovenia is on the map
This does not describe the "Barak liberal cronies" but the reader this article is aImed at because anyone who knows anything about Slovenia, which obviously includes the author so sadly it is lie not mistake that is going on, will find the Comments concerning Tito to be real bad history howlers. Tito was a socialist dictator, and the economic system of Yugoslavia was a typical inefficient socialist mess, but Tito was no Stalin and Yugoslavia was no INGSOC. "Fighting Titos partisans in the woods" is clearly designed to give the reader a picture of her ancestors as part of a brave pro-western liberal democratic resistance in Yugoslavia fighting Titos forces. this is complete fantasy, nothing like this ever existed. Titos partisans were the ones in the words and they fought against NAZI puppet armies. Why do I raise this point about this small sidenote to the article? it is simply a clear example of Grabars typical style of writing things she knows are false to get ignorant people excited.

No, actually

You completely missed what the article is about.
And you ignorantly got excited over a non-issue but one of your own making.

She was not trying to teach history but relevant and existing circumstance's in America TODAY.
Read it again, and go slower, you will see it is you who missed the point of it, not us "ignorant people" just ignorant you.

let us force them to confront history
Because of where I grew up, and with whom I grew up, I knew almost no white people who had family who were slaveholders. Once you get to nobody fairly well, invariably you often learn about people's heritage (if it is not otherwise obvious -- like when grandparents who live in the house who do not speak English).

This is what is totally maddening about this subject. "Whites" in general had nothing to do with black slavery in America. In fact, many people had no relatives even in the U.S. until after slavery existed.

What is so incredible about this subject is that Obama has two separate slaveholding ancestors -- yet that simply does not matter under our version of historical revisionism. It is an umcommon situation -- but it is a situation that Obama shares with many black Americans. For whatever reason, many of them actually have white slaveholding ancestors (and it is frequently due to situations that were not rape).

Yet, today, it is somehow acceptable to blame "whites" for the problem but exempt people like Obama from this attack (which would at least have a semblance of logic if you limited such attacks to descendants of actual slaveholders).

Until people are willing to confront the obvious documented history of America, we are done.

Spoken from the heart, Mary
A heartfelt statement of small-town values.

Thank you.

FeargalX writes: "In fact, many people had no relatives even in the U.S. until after slavery existed."

Me, for one.

But to liberals, those "details" don't matter. They see America as just composed of races and ethnicities, into which each of us is slotted by birth. And each race and each ethnicity is stereotyped with certain properties, which we are all defined arbitrarily to possess.

It doesn't matter to liberals that my ancestors came to America in the first quarter of the 20th century, 50 years after slavery ended. Or that they were impoverished immigrants themselves, who barely made ends meet in the teeming slums of New York City.

All that matters to a liberal like Obama is that I am a "TYPICAL WHITE PERSON." And that literally grandfathers me into this narrative of collective guilt over "whites oppressing blacks" that they have levied on all American Caucasians.

Heck, it wouldn't matter even if I were a naturalized citizen who came to America just 5 years ago from Western Europe. I'm white? Then I must be an oppressor of blacks!

Southerner's too!
This ought to be required reading in our HS and College classes.

Most whites in the South are still trying to catch up after the Civil War -- no sympathy for them and definitely no special treatment!

As a Southerner, I saw blacks get the scholarships while the kids of mill working white parents had to go right to work -- no college, or their parents had to sacrifice unbelievably and work two jobs.

Thanks, Mary, for a brilliant article!

Wow!!!
Possibly the best article I've ever read on Townhall! (And I'm delighted to find that I'm not the only one who feels that way.) I wish I could give it more than five "check-marks"!

Thanks for the clarity of your words and the heartfelt and eloquent appreciation of what American owes its hard-working working class people. I hope Pennsylvania voters get to read this before they vote.

Wow, this was a powerful article. I will print out a copy for myself, so I can read it again. I will also email the article to many people I know so they can read it.

What a powerful message, and hopefully an antidote to all the racist cr*p we've had to put up with in the name of diversity.

There are some people who need to be denigrated. One who comes to mind right away is a very confused lad named Barack Hussein Obama. The man poses as a uniter, yet he has done absolutely nothing in his life to back that claim. In fact, his entire political life indicates just the opposite.

I'm not bitter because government doesn't pay attention to me; I'm angry because government pays way too much attention to me, a situation which will only worsen with the election of BHO.

White slaves!
Mary covered most everything except the tremendous number of white people who were treated worse than the black slaves. They indentured themselves to people who paid for their transportation to the US. The indentured contracts were then sold to people who needed workers. They worked for nothing and were treated poorly. Others worked the mines and factories for little or nothing. The companies treated them worse than slaves since there were others willing to take their place. For minor infractions of the contract, their indentured period was often extended. I do not remember ever hearing any of the relatives of these "white slaves" ever asking for compensation for unjust treatment. They are the very people Mary discusses here!

What a Great Article!
Sorry, critics. You're angry only because you realize that you've awakened the sleeping giant of the Silent Majority.

They're mad as hell, and they ain't gonna accept a condescending, whining, ghoulish, two-bit hack of a Chicagoland-Democratic machine politician who purports to be an active member of his church for 20 years yet doesn't realize that his pastor tells lies, spews hate, and support anti-Semitic.

And when Obama gets a question on the issues (the question about he capital-gains tax), it turns out that my nephews with piggy banks have greater financial acumen. And I know, based on my years of playing with GI Joes as a kid, that I have greater expertise than Obama in military matters.

Why is Obama even in the race?

explores the roots of these leftist candidate's beliefs -- roots of beliefs that go all the way to totalitarian Eastern Europe. Both Obama and Clinton are Marxists. All you must do is study their speeches to know this.

People, Marxism doesn't work. It was finally proven in the 90s when the USSR fell under it's own corruption. Marxism leads to lack of ambition (why should we produce if our products get taken away and given to the lazy?), hopelessness, and in the end starvation and death. The history is there to see. Open your eyes to the failure of the Marxist ideology. It isn't pretty.

Pol Pot!
Hey! If the "elites" so grossly offend the "bitters" I suggest they take a page from Pol Pots play book. Don't just sit there are fume! Get even! Join together to kill or imprison everyone who wears eye-glasses, or anyone who is not of the "right" ethnic heritage, or who has more than a grade school education, or anyone who makes an inexcusable bourgeois attempt to rise above the masses. What has happened to America's revolutionary spirit?

Jim-Too

P.S. My parents [white, by the way] had only grade school educations and endured grinding poverty. But they encouraged their "semi-elite' children to obtain college degrees and many of their despicably "elite" grandchildren now have advanced degrees. They all worked their way through university and never once excused their failings by complaining of racial preferences.

UNIONS, DEMS AND THE RUST BELT

.....It was the Socialist Unions joined at the hip to the Socialist Party (Democrats) that ran up the cost of doing business to the point that our manufacturing base could no longer compete against a world free market ...

.....When the unions could not coerce the Government into a policy of isolationism, the factories began shutting down and jobs went overseas ...

.....Go through the Rust Belt and check off all the industries that closed down or cut back and laid off their workers ...almost every one without exception was a Closed Union Shop ...

.....Yes they have a right to be bitter ....they were sold down the river by the false promises of Socialism and we are still on that road and things will only get worse if we don't wake up and change course ....

.....Barak and Hillary talk change but all they will do is bring is more Socialism at an accelerated rate .....COLOSSUS

Bitter, indeed.

Thank you, Mary Grabar... for simply a truly amazing piece. Wow.

I sincerely hope that this will become the most forwarded article in TH history, and that others will then pass it on.

On a personal note, I would absolutely love to be able to vote for a black person for the presidency of the United States. And in the process, show the world what this country is all about.

But not this man.

Ivy League Education??
Great Article!! I would love to know --WHO PAID FOR OBAMA'S EDUCATION??? I for one am sick of the race subject. Thirty years ago--we got in our cars, our kids hung their heads out the window-- we didn't care if they were all buckled in- and yeah maybe thirty or forty years ago there was more racism. Not today!! The first thing you do is BUCKLE UP and make sure your kids are all in car seats--If you are a smoker- you feel almost dirty when you light up. The same can be said about the race issue-Except now I, for one , feel that race baiters like Reverend Jackson and Reverend Wright keep the subject a live for their own moneitary and political gains. Slavery was wrong!! I think most Americans know that- but why--please tell me why don't they at least blame their mother country Africa for selling them like an EXPORTED COMMODITY??? My ancestors came here and took this land away from the Indians- I am not proud of that- Some of them got scalped, but in a way I am thankful because I am here in a Free Country and enjoy everything it has to offer. Why can't the Race Baiters feel the same way?? yeah it was wrong to be brought here as slaves- but it paved the way so they can be here and be Free. Society has changed for them the same way it has changed for all of us!!

Not Bitter, Not Even Angry,
Not bitter, not even angry -- just disgusted at the people who consider themselves better than those who work and earn and deal with what life presents as it comes and pray and believe in first standing on their own feet then reaching out a hand to assist others to stand on their own feet as well.

Some of my ancestors came from Germany fleeing religious persecution to find refuge in William Penn's Quaker colony where they could farm and work their trades and pray as they believed God called them to. And they formed their own communities because established towns didn't want them -- except, perhaps, as servants. Those Germans sent many soldiers to the Union Army anyway.

Some of my ancestors came from Germany 100 years later fleeing the oppression of the Kaisers. They farmed and mined coal and blew glass and worked hard in steel mills and railroad yards to build a future in a free country. What had slaves to do with them?

I have no patience with people who take on imagined grievances over the long-dead sins of generations gone by as if there weren't enough to do in making their own, productive life in the here and now.

That Barack Obama presumes himself worthy to lead a country filled with people whom he neither understands nor respects is disgusting.

Already Arrived
Much of this is true - but who has the solutions? When 65% of the people want government insured health care, when the federal budget ballooned from 1.88 trillion in 2000 to 3.2 trillion in 2009, when budget deficits during this period have averaged over 2 &1/2 times any previous historic deficts for a similar period, and when entitlement spending is ramping up more rapidly than the increases in revenue, while over 60% of the people refuse to accept any changes to those programs, who has the answers?

The GOP carries equal if not greater responsibility for our current condition. It has, in turn, lost the ability to speak for fiscal responsibility, small government, rational enforcement of immigration laws, or free markets. Granted - it can claim to be different - but its record demonstrates otherwise.

Those that trash only the Democrats are ignoring that very large mote in the eye of the GOP. Claiming, in turn, that one is less or more Marxist than the other ignores the actual voting records of both.

We have abandoned the republic and have become a centralized direct election social welfare state. Those who keep thinking that they can avoid this are refusing to look at where we are. We have already arrived.

re: Samuel Adams quote
posted Sunday at 10:50

I do think the country stands "in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."

Let's see, who is running for leader of the free world (aka POTUS) who is an experienced patriot--methinks John McCain is the best candidate for the times we face!

Great Article
What a wonderful article! It is high time someone addressed this issue. The one thing that is missing from the article, I think, is the inordinate pride that the 'little people' feel. Pride in themselves, pride in their accomplishments, and pride in a nation that allowed them opportunity. Pride is something that is lacking in liberals and their minions. They have no pride because they are personally unaccomplished and fearful. Socialized education, government handouts, and quota systems do not engender pride. This is what B. Hussein and others of his ilk have failed to grasp. The ruling class in this country posses no goodness and no greatness, however the average American citizen does.

Bitter
Yes, I'm bitter - or at least angry. The central government in my lifetime has regulated every form of social and economic activity. It has facilitated the creation of a centralized welfare state. It spends $5 for every $1 spent by all states combined, when 50 years ago, it was $1 for $1. It has chosen to intervene repeatedly and dramatically in the economy in its attempts to prevent anyone from being subject to normal markets. It has substituted government spending for personal responsibility. It has destroyed the republican form of government, and has substituted a huge and impersonal bureaucracy that is not subject to the voters nor to most judicial controls. The balance of power is gone. The states are nothing but administrative adjuncts of this powerful and overwhelming system. And the people? Those people Mary talks about, like my parents who built a farm in Idaho out of the desert, are a small minority. Those people now live in cities as only 7% still make their livings directly or indirectly from agriculture. Socialism crept in, a year at a time - year after year. And each party, election after election, advanced the ball down this path.

Presumably, there are some
black folks reading TH since Obama's relationship with Wright was exposed. Over the years, a lot of white people became aware that black people harbored a lot of resentment, and justifiably so. Now its the turn of black folks to wake up and deal with the general white attitude that no one gave us anything special. Those who are doing well can look around them and see people with the same opportunities who blew it. The natural inclination for EVERYOne is to believe that they earned everything they have. Black folks are deluding themselves if they believe racism is the basis for those who think Affirmative Action is wrong and unconstitutional, or who reject the crazy totally irrational idea of reparations. I don't believe that Mr and Mrs Obama wake up in the morning and thank Providence they were born in the US rather than some country like Nigeria where all the brains and hard work in the world wouldn't give them a 50/50 chance of seeing their 5th birthday. They don't thank the Founding Fathers for putting together a govt where wealth and the levers of power were not apportioned based on hereditary aristocracy. They don't say thank you Messrs Carnegie, Rockefellor, Ford, Edison for helping put together the world's leading economy. They think they did it all, by dint of brains and hard work, and owe nobody a thing for their power and affluence. Its time for them to understand that Joe Sixpack thinks the same way. Whatever he's got, he thinks he earned it, and owes no body a thing.

No more over active imaginations
Every time Obama says something, someone's over active imagination goes into full gear. We don't want to hear stories about Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings. Just stick to what Obama said, if thats possible. Obama was wrong. What voters goes to the polls bitter about issues. What voters goes to the polls clinging to their religion and gun issues. What voters goes to the polls angry over the illegal immigrants and trade sentiments. I can't imagine any voters who goes to the polls with these things in mind. I guess it wasn't being "frustrated" and "bitter" against the war in Iraq which lost the elections for the Republicans in the November elections. I guess the illegal immigrants wasn't also a hot issue in the November elections. Obama was wrong, voters shouldn't cling to their religion, guns, church, antipathy towards immigrants and trade sentiments when they go to the polls. These things are only meant to be kept in a diary where no one can see them.

Gas is expensive
Editorial: Gasoline costs more than $3.25 a gallon.

The Clinton, Obama, and Reading Eagle solution consists of increasing already-high gas taxes, increasing the gas price, and passing increases on to the people. The McCain solution is to suspend the gas pump tax over the summer, which the Eagle editorial says is shortsighted.

While the others will only make things worse, McCain is close to this long-term solution:

We the people pay all taxes, and we the people are the only ultimate source of all tax revenue. Since there is only one source of all tax revenue, there should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue. It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons, for each level of government.

This would remove the taxes from the price of gasoline and everything else, greatly reducing the price of everything. This would also reduce the cost of government by eliminating almost all the tax-collection bureaucracies. These bureaucrats could get real jobs and start paying into the treasury, instead of taking our tax money out. This would make gasoline, and everything else, affordable, and would stop businesses and jobs from being taxed out of existence.

An Eloquent Voice

Dr. Graber’s observations strike a chord with a vast sleeping body of middle and working class Americans. American’s whose families’ sacrifices and efforts built this country into an economic and military superpower in the last century. A political class who has been betrayed first by the race baiting pseudo intellectuals of the Democratic Party and in turn by the privileged globalist’s of the Republican Party. The November election will mark a sea change in the American political landscape. In the turmoil that follows millions of Americans will be looking for a clear sentient voice such as Dr. Graber to give life to their political view. Her future writings will be awaited with great anticipation

Obama
has lived the American dream. He is black, raised by a single mother and her parents, plus he worked and paid his way through college. He was ambitious, worked hard and was able to rise above this disadvantage. With his intelligence he was able to make it into Harward. Under most circumstances he would have ended up in ghetto and floundered much as other blacks to. It is a credit to him for what he has accomplished. The story of the downtrodden white in this column is my story. But my parents worked hard, instilled ambition in me, and I too worked and paid my way through college As a result I was able to move out of the poverty and into a comfortable life style. That is what America offers. Certainly my background being the same described in this column didn't hold me back.

To my brother the union member part 1
You oppose my Total Tax Reform plan called “One Tax And Done”. Do you really enjoy paying much more for everything than you should have to pay, and seeing many union jobs taxed out of existence?

It is your duty to sell the plan. It is your duty and responsibility to your union, to go to your union meetings and remind the other members that they pay a lot of money to the union as dues, and that a lot of that dues money (how much?) is given by the union bosses to state and federal Democrat-party politicians to keep them in office.

It is also your duty to remind the membership that these Democrat-party politicians are constantly passing more and higher taxes, some of which are to be used to give an additional 845 billion dollars to the UN. These taxes have forced and continue to force many tens of thousands of employers out of business, out of the state, and out of the country, along with all the many jobs these employers provided. This is called outsourcing, and taxes are one of the main reasons for it. Hershey’s closing of the Luden’s Candy factory is a good example of this. Luden’s is a union shop, and the union jobs are going to Mexico, India, and Red China, thanks to all the destructive taxes the Democrat-party politicians passed and increased.

These same Democrat-party politicians are also trying to get amnesty for the many millions of illegal aliens, so they can take jobs presently held by long-term union members. Ask members of construction unions, who have already lost their jobs to illegal aliens, about this.

The politicians you are paying to keep in office are taxing millions of union jobs out of existence, and are trying to get illegal aliens into others.

To my brother the union member part 2
Remember that, in 1990, these Democrat-party federal-level politicians greatly increased these taxes to force tens of thousands of employers to put millions of Americans out of jobs, to anger the people and get President Bush out of office. In 1991, the democrat-controlled state government did the same for no apparent reason other than “they could”. How many union members lost their jobs? Did the politicians ask for union permission to destroy jobs? All union members are paying the politicians to cut union members’ throats!!!

You must get the membership to send the local union boss to the state union boss and to the national union boss. The state and national bosses should go to the state bosses and national bosses of all the other unions. All the union bosses should go to the state and federal politicians to tell them that they will not get any more money, support, and votes until they repeal all these destructive, union-job-destroying taxes and get rid of the illegal aliens who are taking union jobs. If they don’t repeal the taxes and deport the illegal aliens, use the primary election to give your support to another candidate.

At this time, the state and national bosses can give copies of “One Tax And Done” and “How To Get Rid of Illegal Aliens” to each politician. I’ll follow this letter with state and federal versions of it. You probably haven’t thought about it, but if all those taxes had been repealed by 1946, we would have one of the best railroad systems in the world, and you wouldn’t have to worry that Amtrak might go under and your job might not last for ten more years – a concern you’ve expressed to me. The money that these taxes take from Amtrak is needed by Amtrak to stay in business and provide jobs; and the jobs taken by illegal aliens are needed by you and your union brothers.

Obama - Post Turtle
Read the following in Human Events:

This says it all.... While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas
rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor
struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around
to Barack Obama and his bid to be our President. The old rancher said,'Well,
ya know, Obama is a 'post turtle'.' Not being familiar with the term, the
doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said,'When you're
driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle
balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.' The old man saw a puzzled look on
the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up
there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do
while he is up there, and you just want to help the dumb a__ get down.'

It most certainly
a wonderful article.
Good for you Mary Grabar!!!!

Fabulous article!
I could not add a single thing to this well written article. And I will forward this on to other typical white people I know.

Impeachbush
Shut up. Obama is an elitist and a racist. The little pedistal you liberals have put him on is starting to crack. He is all talk.

Excellent column Ms. Grabar

Julescator
What Obama had said is that people are bitter, so they cling to guns and religion and anti-immigrant sentiment.

In other words, people disagree with his proposed policies because he is bitter.

obama mixed up thoughts
That was the most intelligent writting I have ever read--thank you Mary Graber

traitorous impeacher
Actually one post from you is MORE than enough. Two is really irritating.

impeachbush
So Obama basically said that the only reason people oppose gun control, abortion, and illegal immigration is because they are bitter.

Here is a hint: maybe Democrats are on the wrong side of social and moral issues.

impeachbush
So you're saying that mid-America votes Republican, even though they, you imply, don't have a job because of Republicans.

So in your view, these mid-Americans just don't realize what is good for them. And this doesn't sound just a little elitest to you?

If you paid taxes, you did get a tax reduction. Now you might be unhappy because some "rich guy" got a tax break too and you probably feel like he doesn't need all that money anyway, but how much money he has is none of your businesss.

You can't give away the American Dream to people, if that worked the War on Poverty would have ended decades ago. The American Dream is that you keep your hands out of my pocket, your nose out of my face and allow me the freedom to excel or fail.

You need to stop worrying about how much money someone else makes and try doing for yourself.

excellent article
Working class Americans, of a all colors, who are tired of having their earnings stripped from them by a government that does not represent their values have to be called something. 'Bitter' is just the latest in a long line of labels. While less offensive than many that have been used before and will be used again, it is still unacceptable for politicians to tag the people they supposedly represent with derogatory labels.

By the way, it does Sen. Obama no good to keep posting what "he really said'. If the good senator is not giving a speech, he can't seem to put together a coherent sentence. Put his answers in print and you find the man says very little that makes sense.

Yes Barack,We are Bitter
Thank you Ms Mary for clearly enunciating the way things were, are today and will continue to be in contrast to some who feel this country owes them something...We all owe this country and its institutions respect and its founders reverance, and those veterans who have given everything to it so that Barack,Michele et al of similar ilk can have the freedom to try to pervert the very system of government that enables them be able to LEAD it...Only in America can such a dichotomy exist...

Yes Barack we are bitter because you dare to diss t"the hand that feeds you" ....you wish to use the very strength of this freedom (the right to vote) to become President so you and Michele can lead us all back in time to when Government controlled everything and everyone... Shame on you both for doing a terrible disservice to all of us "immigrants". We are all one people from many backgrounds, ethnicities, colors, religions etc...We have one thing in common...we love this country and many of us were and are willing to die for it...and what it stands for..Show some respect for it and its people and focus on your blessings ...Dr William DeLeo

Impeach Bush
You called us "Ignorant Idiots ..."

You tell us that the media only played small sound bites (byte? Does that mean the sound is made of bits?). Many of us listened or read the entire speech.

Then your wrote: "I don't think Obama meant that these people are totally miserable in their lives, but that they have given up on ever having the American dream!"

If that is what he meant, then why didn't he say that?

I believe it was a liberal who said that words mean something.

I need a little help here ...
Yesterday, I read a blog where the writer claimed that Barack Obama's half-brother in Kenya was a radical Muslim and that he was working with some activist to bring about Shari'a law into Kenya. Can this be true? Does anyone out there know whether this is a rumor or not. If not, where do I go to find out for myself? Thanks.

What hooey!
Doctor Grabar, while as a fellow Slavic-American (my father's father came from Bohemia in 1913) I can sympathize with your rant against the left-of-center elitists who have dominated Democratic politics since the McGovernites took over the party, do you honestly believe people of your background - and mine - are going to fare any better with the Republicans. The country clubbers and corporate bigwigs despise people of our background - we're the hired help, remember? They have cleverly played on our patriotic impulses and manipulated them during the so-called "culture wars" - all the while insulating themselves and their offspring from any competition from people like use. Get real - the Bushes and Cheneys don't give a tinker's damn about our people - the open and obvious disdain the current administration has displayed toward military veterans is the prize example, notwithstanding the eyewash employed. Obama may be a liberal elitist - but I'll take four oor eight years of him over the country clubbers and Chenyites any day of the week.

Impeachscumbag
Impeachbush, liberal turd and overall loser. Sorry about your brother in-law. Did he save any money, have any plan or was his plan the company or the government will take care of me, or both. Liberal scum like you are so ignorant and stupid, and have this insane belief that companies owe employees. Sorry, people don't go into business to give people a job and benefits, they do it to make a profit, and when government interferes, with ridiculous regulations, and unions demand wages for a position that requires one to have the ability to stay awake for 8 hours, at a labor cost far higher than what the market can bare, well, business has to look elsewhere, and sadly it's third world crap holes, that make a better quality product with slave/prison labor. What does it tell you when some third world crap hole can produce an equal quality product to union labor. People need to have a plan, it is not the governments job to plan your retirement or your future. Liberal stupidity is the belief that the individual is not responsible for themselves. NO WHERE in the
Constitution does it guarantee a stress free perfectly fair life. There is no UTOPIA Pinhead, get over it. Tell your brother in-law he should have planned better.

Dr. Graber Thank you
Excellent article Dr. Graber, thank you. It is about time that conservative push back on the liberal scum that have turned this once great nation into a cesspool.

Sincerely,
Roy

reverse discrimination
Over the years I have been able to overcome the resentment caused by being discriminated against because of the color of my skin, that being white. I was a victim of intergration as I was bused to a black high school where the blacks of the neighborhood did not want us. The majority of the faculty were black and so were most of the students. Upon graduating among the top of my class, and having little or no money for college because of the death of my dad, I watched the majority of all scholarships go to kids who had grade point averages well below mine. This was affirmative action at it's best as most of the recepients were black.

Having said this, I feel no hatred toward blacks as I have many black friends. My resentment comes from the liberals who run our government allowing this to happen! There should be absolutely no program in our government based on the color of one's skin!

Plenty of hard-working blacks
Ms. Grabar ignores the fact that there are many hard-working black people doing manual labor--working in factories, cleaning houses, driving buses, being security guards--and keeping impeccable homes and being model citizens. At one company where I worked the head security guard was a sweet, wonderful man who had a second job in a warehouse so he could afford a few extras like taking his grandchildren on vacations, and who had to be hospitalized for injuries he incurred when trying to keep an intruder out of the building. This guard happened to be black. Another black security guard I knew brought his Bible to work with him and tried to live out Christian principles every day of his life; among other things, he had opened his home to his brother, who had made some bad choices, and he was trying to set his brother on the right track. This was in Chicago, where there are plenty of blacks who guard the buildings, drive the buses and trains, and flip the hamburgers--but there are also many examples in Los Angeles, where I live now, and in the small Midwestern town where I grew up. So please realize that not all blacks are "hoodlums"; this characterization is as unfair as judging all whites by the worst among them. Working-class blacks and whites are natural allies, along with working-class people of all other races. And Ms. Grabar, I'd like to know how the white elites who ran the mines, mills, and factories treated members of your family. They probably told them they didn't need to organize unions and shouldn't complain about low wages and unsafe working conditions.

not the same history is it?
“You’re talking about “those people.”
You’re talking about white people who have neither the family connections nor the racial credentials to gain entrance to the world that you inhabit.”

Ummm, what are you talking about, here is Obama’s
ancestry. Please point out how this is what leads to
Obama’s success:

http://genealogy.about.com/od/aframertrees/p/barack_obama.h tm

Obama is of “those people”

“Many of the people you’re talking about are those whose parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe who came to these places to work in steel mills, coal mines, and factories. We know the code words.”

Like Obama’s grandparents?
Not sure Dunham is of the nationality you state
but worked in the factories yes.

“You’re talking about people whose culture is little known. We have been pretty quiet. We never tried to impose our culture on everyone. We never insisted on putting pictures of ourselves in our native dress into schoolbooks or mandating that our stories and songs be part of the curriculums.”

If you’re saying that C.+E. European immigrant history
Is equivalent to African American history it just isn’t.
How Americans have dealt with race, particularly the
African, is the central dilemma of our history.

“We tried to maintain our culture without government aid, by forming our own churches and groups, and building Polish, Ukrainian, and Slovenian halls.”

As opposed to a government(s) that deliberately
separated your kind from others by law?
Then again, the same can also be said of Africans
too – the African Aid Society, the NAACP, SNCC, etc.

You wrote: "...the Republicans. The country clubbers and corporate bigwigs despise people of our background - we're the hired help, remember?"

I think you need to study the new demographics of the party memberships.

It is no longer the Republicans who are the "country clubbers and corporate bigwigs."

Do you honestly believe that this "liberal elitist" (your words) cares about you?

Dr. Grabar
Thank you for writing this article. Some of the content is very parrallel to my own life in this country having come here with my parents who legally immigrated here in 1958. I love this great country and am living the American Dream. Although I do not hold a degree, by learning the language, serving for 3 years in the military, working 2 jobs (some of which are a story of their own) when first married are all things that have been instrumental in my success here.

It is my opinion that most people who find it difficult to make a good life for themselves here have never assimulated into the culture but have instead found a separate culture that doesn't require working hard or serving in the military, or for that matter speaking the language properly. What I find most interesting is how much one can become dependent on others in that same culture who use this ignorance to gather wealth from those who refuse to learn even the language.

This country has changed a great deal since I first came here. The welfare coffer on a state and federal level has taken on an entire separate culture of it's own, with the government itself now being the largest recipient of handouts inclusive of the salaries paid to those who do nothing but mismanage the our hard earned monies. They again, have no accountability which is the role model for the many who will not work.

We are sitting on a runaway train, all talking the talk and few walking the walk anymore. We are unable to pass down the pride required to remain great. Being great requires sacrifices too many are unwilling to pay any longer, in fact many don't even believe that supporting our fine people in uniform are worth the effort.

Proud Lib
You wrote: "Ms. Grabar ignores the fact that there are many hard-working black people doing manual labor."

What does your statement have to do with Ms. Grabar's response to Obama?

Also, I don't remember the article claiming that, "all blacks are "hoodlums".

public schools rife with Marxism?
First of all, what??? i get that this is an angry tirade and not meant as an intelligent, informed, well-researched piece, but, again, WHAT??? you think liberals sit in their mansions sneering at you? this is an incredible display of paranoia. and further:
"Rather than teach us what was good and beautiful about Western Civilization and the country to which our parents had fled, teachers gave us Marxist nonsense, if they bothered to teach at all."---where did you go to school? I went to "elitist" NYC schools, and was NEVER taught Marxist doctrine, so I find this quite shocking.
and then:
"marauding hoodlums came into our neighborhoods in riots that were celebrated by the intelligentsia in Manhattan penthouses, who saw such violence as justified expressions of outrage over past discrimination."---
On what do you base this allegation?

Many liberals disagree with affirmative action for a variety of reasons, some even for the reasons you cite. Please, why not try an intelligent dialogue about this?
liberals, as a whole, and especially those running for president, have no interest in attacking your right to attend church or celebrate your Slovenian heritage, or even own a legal gun. Sure, a lot of people think religion is a load of crock. SO what? those people are more often secular humanists than totalitarian communists.
One more thing--liberals are Euro-centric right? Then there's a good chance they know where Slovenia is on a map. It's actually quite a popular tourist destination these days, Ms. Grabar. I'm sure you are angry at liberals about that, too.

everyonesfacts
It was Obama who used the phrase, "typical white person" on Mar 20, 2008.

Are you saying that he should claim white heritage, black heritage, or both? Some of his supporters may be interested.

The point is that Obama stooped to patronizing the Liberal (mostly white) San Francisco audience with words that meant something.

His backpedaling is a typical politician's reaction to being caught saying something they shouldn't have said.

Husker2, Proud Lib
Husker2, you make a point i wish to expand. Proud Lib, note that Grabar said virtually nothing about black folks. She stated where she was, and where most of her social group are. Its time for black folks to realize that most white folks don't feel they owe blacks a thing just for being black. I won't vote for Obama because i perceive him as a racist elitist. If J C Watts or Ward Connerly were a candidate, i would vote for either in a flash, simply because i believe in their values and principles. Its pointless Proud Lib, for you to tell me how wrong i am for believing as i do, just as its pointless for me to tell you you are mistaken. to convince one another, we must bring facts and open minds to the table. I have heard people SAY Obama will unite the nation. OH? What has he done to unite us in the past? Is my scepticism irrational? Talk is cheap.

This article is not a study on blacks

Ms. Grabar ignores the fact that there are many hard-working black people

But as long as you brought it up and not Mrs Grabar, the only thing I see that some blacks have a problem with is admitting they got one.

Course there are a few outspoken blacks that should be held with honor among blacks or whites, or yellow and pink, yet are not for the most part by democrats or most blacks.

To Husker2
Ms. Grabar went on and on about hard-working whites who immigrated from Eastern Europe--I just wanted to show that a good work ethic is not an exclusively white characteristric.

Her mentions of blacks were pretty much limited to comments about "hoodlums" who rioted, black students who "roughed up" white classmates, and those who appeared to get something for nothing through affirmative action.

BTW, affirmative action doesn't necessarily mean racial preferences. In many workplaces, it just means making sure you find and consider qualified minority applicants, not that you have to hire a member of a minority group over a white person. And white people have been getting preferences for centuries!

still not the same history is it?
“We never wore buttons declaring “Slav Power” or grouped together for purposes of intimidation or violence.”

Not even after they bombed 1000s of your churches?
Not even after they sprayed fire hoses at the Slavic
children breaking an immoral law non-violently?

“The power we asked for was the power of the paycheck which we earned in factories, steel mills, coal mines, or by cleaning houses.”

And you were the last hired and first fired right?

“Yet, we were taken aside and told that because of affirmative action it was no use trying to advance off the assembly line; we were told in “diversity workshops” that people of color had to be promoted over more qualified white people. I know this, Barack, because I have family members and friends who worked in factories.”

So does Barack!
Not one of his relatives was promoted because
of Affirmative Action programs

“But what did we get for that, Barack? We paid cash for our houses and kept impeccable yards, yet saw the value of our homes plummet after marauding hoodlums came into our neighborhoods in riots that were celebrated by the intelligentsia in Manhattan penthouses, who saw such violence as justified expressions of outrage over past discrimination.”

I don’t agree with using violence, but are you saying
Their were marauding hoodlums in small town America?
Which one, do say?
This sounds more like a city neighborhood!
You are not misrepresenting yourself Grabar are you?

still not the same history.

“We went to public schools in those same neighborhoods only to be accosted for our skin color and the presumed “privilege” that teachers said we had. Rather than teach us what was good and beautiful about Western Civilization and the country to which our parents had fled, teachers gave us Marxist nonsense, if they bothered to teach at all.”

Right this terrible education led you to your doctorate. lol
Study after study of public school teaching has shown that
they teach traditional subjects traditionally. Anecdote after
anecdote on TH tries to prove otherwise. Were all TH
journalists subjected to the exceptions

“Our schoolmates saw the evening news, mimicked their elders by wearing “Black Power” buttons and felt justified in roughing the white kid who didn’t seem tough. Our brothers, cousins, and uncles went off to fight in Vietnam, while those from your class took up arms against their campus administrators.”

Is this made up?
I’m serious.
And what did they tell the black kids that they
would grow up to President? lol
Just what class does she believe Obama was from living with his single
mom?
Or are you talking about his class now?
Which class do you consider yourself currently?

Discriminated Against
Were African Americans mistread? YES. Were most of them brought here against their will? YES. Was this country helped by slave labor? YES. Should we feel sorry for what was done to those people? YES. Should we pay their ancestors money and give them more rights than anyone else? NO.

Thorought our country's history many groups have been discriminated against and persecuted (this is in no way meant to dismiss or minimize what slaves went through). Those groups include but are limited to Catholics, Irish, eastern Europeans, Mexicans, Mormons, etc. We do not give any of them special rights. In fact in many cases they still suffer slights. Mormons were run off their land and an extermination order was issued by the governor of Illinois. Until about 10 years ago it was still legal to kill a Mormon. The Irish were told they weren't wanted and many if not most business wouldn't hire them. Eastern Europeans are still frequently the butt of jokes (polak for example). They were relegated to low skill and menial jobs for years.

My point is these people are not asking for favorite status but these people don't want government to intervene on their behalf. The Irish aren't asking for money or jobs because their great-great-grandfather was abused and relegated to sub-human employment and housing or refused housing. Mormons are asking for their ancestors land back or suing for reparations. Catholics, while being the biggest religious group in the country are still treated poorly at times. They aren't asking for special treatment because of past wrongs. The past is past. Just as I am not responsible for my parents action I don't expect somebody else's ancestors to pay for their ancestor's wrongdoing.

It's time to get over things. African Americans, Catholics, Mormons, Irish and all other groups have unparalled opportunities in this great land. We need to come together and be one.

here is some more
“True, we had our problems, as all people do, with such things as alcoholism and family violence, but we handled those ourselves, and never blamed “society” or a history of oppression. Still, many of us did carry legacies from the old country, of hunger and persecution, of watching family members and villagers murdered by atheistic regimes. So we were grateful for the opportunity to work and buy our own little patches of the American Dream.”

Right, same happened among different African tribes
Which is what you seem to be comparing your
ancestors history to. Because, if not Obama’s
mother’s side we assume is similar.
The key is it did not happen here, in the good ole
USA to the same extent it did to African-Americans.

“We were happy to use a welding torch, shovel, or broom to get them. We didn’t insist that we should all get college degrees. We didn’t have our documents translated for us or get bilingual instruction. If we didn’t know English we made sure our children did and we relied on them.”

Or is this an attack on Hispanics?
Because we all know they hate to work. lol

“Your white friends in San Francisco, Barack, probably had cleaning women like my mother (and me when I accompanied her and then had my own cleaning jobs from age 12). As white people from a certain class and with certain connections, your donors knew that their futures would be secure because of their inheritances and the connections they could make in the media, politics, and business. In fact, it would benefit them in the world of “radical chic” to hang around those like you and support your policies. (Great opportunity to be photographed next to a black person!)”

Again reread the speech posted earlier 4/20 – 11:05 and 11:06
Your take on it is way off and comes off as ignorant or elitist imho.
And assumes much about the audience.
Would she feel the same way about a McCain audience in Orange County? I would guess not.

still more

“Your black friends there, like your wife, see no end to the amount that this country owes them because of what happened to their ancestors. It makes no difference that many of the whites in previous generations also had experienced persecution and hunger and worked in dangerous, dirty, and degrading jobs. Or that blacks and Native Americans were among the slave owners.”

But they were never the slaves!
And no Jim Crow until 1964-5 why is this so hard to
understand? You don’t have to agree with it, but
you should at least understand it.

“In fact, you and those wealthy donors sneer at white people who have had to do manual labor and who have paid for tuition at community colleges with the money earned that way, while our classmates received special scholarships and government grants—from our taxes.”

Obama was a community activist who worked with
blue collar workers. This is what he DID, not what
he said or you inferred he said. Well DONE is better
than well said.

“You sneer at those like us who put our faith in God and not in those like you who would presume to know what’s good for us and tell us what to do with our money and our children, and leave us with no ability to defend ourselves.”

What?
There is no sneering.
Reread the comments.
Even the audio does not come off as sneering, imo –
Not even close.

she keeps going and going

“Well, Barack, coming from your Ivy League world, you would not know much about us.”

This is presumptuous and false.
Again Obama’s grandparents are from the world you
write about. The South Side of Chicago even around
the U. of Chicago is not Harvard Yard.
Can’t locate Slovenia on a map, try Chicago.

“Now you live in a Chicago mansion and sneer at those like us who simply want to keep and defend our little three-bedroom ranches. You don’t know what it’s like to have family members die for the right to attend mass.”

I will take your word for this.
What year did your ancestors immigrate?

“I know your liberal cronies, Barack; they make me check off my skin color on job applications and ask me during job interviews of how I teach multiculturalism, yet don’t know where Slovenia is on the world map. They couldn’t care less about my culture, nor about Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, or Lithuanian culture. Your supporters often feel free to mock my Slovenian heritage in letters and comments on the Internet when they disagree with me. I guess it’s like being called a “dumb Polack”—something that has never gained quite the opprobrium of other ethnic epithets.”

You know them, so none of them were of Polish, Slovenian,
Russian or Lithuanian heritage right? Or are you assuming?
What ancestry does George Soros claim? Does he count?

It seems you don’t know anything about some aspects of
multiculturalism if you think this.
And then they would call you “dumb Polack?”
Do you think these are the same people who interviewed you?
I doubt it.
I sense some reverse elitism elitism!

and a finishing touch - moonbattery
“See, Barack, we know the system: Some are more “equal” than others.”

Where this is coming from I do not know.
It is what I call the moonbattery of the right.
Trying to make the link to communism, Marxism,
socialism, Nazism. Same happens on the left by
Moonbats!

Sparky I believe Obama said as much in his "race speech"

on typical white person, + backpedaling
Husker2 writes:
"It was Obama who used the phrase, "typical white person" on Mar 20, 2008."

Now, that is something to talk about. I agree this was not well chosen
or correct, imo. BTW, if he had said typical white person for her age
I would have agreed.

"Are you saying that he should claim white heritage, black heritage, or both? Some of his supporters may be interested."

I do not really care which. He is of both and has always said so.

"The point is that Obama stooped to patronizing the Liberal (mostly white) San Francisco audience with words that meant something."

Actually out of context they meant something.
When I read the speech I do not get the feeling of outrage that has been
expressed on these boards. Out of context I did. Maybe it's just me.
But I also come from a cowtown, rather small town.

"His backpedaling is a typical politician's reaction to being caught saying something they shouldn't have said."

He hasn't backpedaled imo - his message has been the same when
asked about it - see the full speech I linked to 4/20 11:05 + 11:06
See his race speech where his talking points are much the same.

rob from VA and Obama agree
rob read his race speech - link above - Obama acknowledges your
feelings, almost exactly.

Holy Cr@p! Dirty Greek, you were right!
That article in "the Stranger" was like reading the Communist Manifesto! I wonder how they plan on eating on those "blue islands?"

Your Message Resonates.
While your background has a more recent immigration history, we lower-class WASPs share many of your experiences.
When I was transitioning out of the Air Force, I applied for a position as a civilian worker at the same Air Force Base. My credentials were very good and I was supposed to receive a veteran's preference. Instead, I was notified that the Base was required to hire more Asian immigrants to reach diversity quotas. I was forced to take a much less desirable civilian position to support my family.
Someone of your eloquence should consider running for public office. I would work for your election in a heartbeat, even if I live in Indiana! God Bless You and keep up the fight!

And she has as much a right to express it her own way as anyone else does.
Just because someone mentions THEIR own heritage does not mean they HAVE to talk about blacks too.

If I talk about my skin color as much as many blacks do, I would have to rightfully be called a racist.
It is not "discrimination" for one to talk about their own background without it being necessary to mention the poor mis-treated blacks.

Everyone is getting sick of it, cry babies.

What do you mean, he hasn't backpedaled?

As soon as it was reported, he began saying that he did not mean it the way it sounded.

Also, you have a habit of referring us to his speeches, as if we have not heard or read them.

It is precisely because we have heard them that we have such a problem with them.

Dear Ms. Grabar, this
article is a 10. This is my entire life in print. It's all there in a nutshell. Forget B. Hussein's "race" speech, this is the speech that EVERYONE in the country should be forced to read. Finally, someone speaks up for White people with the truth. Bless your heart.

Obama, since the beginning of candidacy, has claimed that he would unite the country in a forward direction. He would leave the old politics behind.

Just look at what has happened recently.

Honestly look at the words he has used.

Honestly look at the people with whom he has surrounded himself.

Do you believe for one minute (now be honest) that he can unite this country?

If he is elected, and it looks like he will be, it will be the same old same old.

Proud Liberal
Can yoou see that no one here begrudges you your space and frame of mind? Grabar is telling you how many, maybe most, white people feel. Kindly accord us the same space. You and i may or may not have rational reasons for how we feel. That's not the point. Grabar is trying to convey information, not justify what is, merely report what is. To find any common ground, we must acknowege and recognize where we are coming from.

I think you need to study the new demographics of the party memberships.

It is no longer the Republicans who are the "country clubbers and corporate bigwigs."

Do you honestly believe that this "liberal elitist" (your words) cares about you?"

Nice try, but the country clubbers in my neck of the woods are the chamber of commerce types and "small business" people - you'd call them "middle class" - the same kind who favor unrestricted immigration so they can hire non-citizens for minimal wages - while pocketing the difference, because they sure as heel aren't offering the consumer any price reductions. And let's also address the shabby manner in which the party in power - Republican - has been treating veterans comng home from that fiasco of a wrong war in Iraq - or do you want to sweep that under the rug too? The Republicans were able to sell a good bill of goods for many years - but the last few years revealed their true colors - and they AREN'T favorable to second and third generation ethnics.

Here's a photo to illustrate Marys point
Great heartfelt article BUT YOU NEED A PICTURE TO GO ALONG WITH IT.

A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS:

Except they're not slav's, they're Italian, my Italian family and I am first generation born, but this photo should speak for the slav's and many other ethinicities that came to America who never owned slaves, never would own slaves, and like the families Mary is referring to.

ummm, because he hasn't.
In the comments afterwards he said he might have mangled it,

"Also, you have a habit of referring us to his speeches, as if we have not heard or read them.

Well, if you read the whole San Fran comments, to see them as being
elitist or out of touch is imo completely missing the point. Commentaries like Grabar's and many on these boards - columnists,
bloggers, and commenters have shown there is some truth to Obama's
statements.
The race speech answers many of the complaints see above.
Another example I'll give you to stand for most columnists, was W.
Williams who complained that he did not say anything about schools
or self-reliance, etc. etc. when he did all of them.

applies to you and you are bitter and cling to your guns, religion, etc.

"Honestly look at the words he has used."

I have, but I do give the benefit of the doubt to most people maybe to
a fault.
And I put more weight to prepared statements than off the cuff answers.
I largely agree with his sentiments that some people are hurting and
don't trust the government. The word that he uses that is right on, imo
is that people are "skeptical". And they should be.

"Honestly look at the people with whom he has surrounded himself."

David Plouffe?

"Do you believe for one minute (now be honest) that he can unite this country?"

No I do believe he will make us more united.
Actually, McCain would do likewise just by doing things differently in DC.
I'm afraid Hillary just because she is who she is would not unite people
even if she tried.

Methinks the Lady Doth Protest....
way too much.

Mary Grabar rarely makes any sense, but this racist screed is far below even her minimal standards. More importantly, it's proof in the puddign that Obama was exactly right: conservatism at heart is the territory if bitter, biased rednecks.

Yes BO we are bitter....................
Mary: Now this is a true column. America was built by the emigrants not the AFRICAN-american slaves nor the self appointed upper crap of the Republican Party. We Middle class European decendants that brought skills, created jobs, took on the tough jobs with our sweat, blood and brains. Poles and English, French and Hungarians, Russians and Italians, Germans and Swedes, etc. and etc.
We hate being used, we are bitter because we paid our dues and the lame take it away. The greedy steal it threw laws that make no sense and waste our lively hood on a whim.
Barrack is just another I want you to think I'm for you thief in disguise. Lets not fall pray for another liar and thief.

The Time Has Come
Its time to cut these lazy, immoral, black, anti-white racists lose. Let them fend for themselves. Let them earn an education and compete on a level playing field. If not, let them continue to be criminals and fill our jails. Or let them flip burgers!

No more sympathey. Let B. Hussein support them or they can stay at racist Wright's 1.6 million dollar mansion.

Of course, there is always Africa. LOL

Thank you, Mary
Well said. My grandparents emmigrated from Croatia after WWI. They washed dishes, picked tomatoes, and lived in a little house where they raised my dad and my aunts. He, too worked three jobs while he put himself through school during the Depression, and served in the Army in WWII. My uncle is buried in France. I never met him; he died in the Battle of the Bulge.

I too have worked in the fields and served at the country clubs, and put myself through school, and my children, too. We are not bitter about it. We are proud of our heritage and our successes in America.

But I have never forgotten what it feels like to be a refugee. I know that concept from the values I was taught at home. We are Americans now, and will never be driven from our homes again.

The time may be coming...
...for a "night of the long knives".

soapbox--not allowed--"national security" concerns and McCain-Feingold campaign laws.

ballot box--"fixed" by the two major "political" parties--no ballot or media access for other parties or political organizations.

jury box--jury nullification prohibited by "law" and juries "stacked"--not realizing their full power under penalty of "law".

cartridge box--time will tell...Our "insurance policy (Second Amendment) to be decided on by the Supremes later this year.

As Japan found out, they "awoke a sleeping giant".
There are many more of us (honest citizens) than of the political and corporate power elite.

In medieval times, "lords" with common sense were rightly wary of their "subjects"; the "lords" being outnumbered by their "subjects".

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of tyrants and patriots from time to time".

Since the Constitution is being ignored by the power elites, the choices that the responsible citizens of our "republic" have are becoming fewer.

time for a change??
the soapbox--not allowed due to national security concerns (post 9-11) and McCain-Feingold restrictions on political speech.

the ballot box--monopolized by two "major" political parties with very little difference between the two. Other parties and political organizations denied ballot and media access.

the jury box--jury nullification outlawed. It is against the law in all 50 states to inform juries that they have the power to judge the law itself, not only the culpability of the defendant based on the "facts" of the case. Laws are used to prosecute people that are blatantly unconstitutional.

the cartridge box--time will tell. Our "insurance policy" (second amendment) will be decided on by the supreme court later this year.

In medieval times, the "lords" and people in power were rightly wary of their subjects and would have to be somewhat benevolent towards them. There were more "subjects" than "rulers".

Japan realized that it "awoke a sleeping giant" when it helped precipitate world war II.

The powers that be would well be advised that there are many more of "us" than there are of "them".

Yokels

" We never tried to impose our culture on everyone. "

Perhaps you have been model citizens here in the US. But in Europe you have been fighting each
other and those who share countries with you for
darn near two thousand years.

Thank you, Ms. Graber
I started to write in detail of the poverty my European immigrant ancestors endured in this Country, and how they rose from poverty through grinding work, but deleted what I had written. There are a million stories like that, all the same theme but with differing details.

I wrote a lot of other things, about paying full tuition for my "privileged" white honors student daughter and about being passed over for jobs years ago so quotas could be met, but deleted them.

Thanks for defending us. No one else is.

garbar
it's great, someone that could word it the way it should be told! boy, i wish i could tell it like it is in the way you do! but any ways, when obama speaks listen to his words, then as we say, read between the lines. you might not like what you hear! he is a true lier!

silent suffering
Ms. Grabar gives voice to a long-suffering hard-working group with no time nor inclination to whine. They arrived in the United States with literally the shirt on their backs with family histories of serfdom and oppression to rival any black stories and lacking even English or friends or family members to help.

They were grateful to this nation for giving them freedom of speech, association, religion and opportunity among other gifts. Without English as a Second Language classes, Welfare, Affirmative Action programs, they pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and watched their hard-earned tax dollars be handed to others for these programs from which their own children were not allowed to benefit (affirmative action) or were too proud to take (welfare).

Barack Obama is a pampered brat to whom everything was handed on a silver platter. His only hardship was being deserted by his black father at age 2 but his white family more than compensated. He is play-acting at being an oppressed black in the United States when it is more likely that his black African Muslim ancestors were slave owners or traders. He married a wife and was mentored by a pastor that define the word bitter and unjustifiably so as both attained privilege in the nation they revile and not by having to scrabble tooth and nail for it.

The salt-of-the-earth European immigrants Ms. Grabar describes escaped from totalitarian messes, most with their families not intact. Obama's marxism spits in the face of their dreadful experience with it.

Did you just say that? Awesome.

Ancestry.com is really really big
Does anyone realize how many people are hooked on family history? It is huge. You have Ancestry, GenCircles, RootsWeb, USGenWeb...It is a major use of library computers.

So kicking dirt all over our ancestors is not a really bright idea. It is not much appreciated.

Don't tread on me.

just like to say
I don't rate these columns, but this is a one star column.

I understand what she is saying but it comes off as elitism borne from
struggle.

Barack had less than a paragraph of his reply to a question that was
questionable. And altogether after a year of speeches and debates has
probably what is the equivalent of this whole column in questionable
phrases, misstatements, poor quotes, errors.

As I showed above, Ms. Grabar did it one column Nearly every assertion
is questionable and/or poorly worded.

I have to say this is one of the worst columns, not the worst, I've ever
read on TH.

MORE LIKE ANGRY
To the woman who wrote this, for one who considers herself to be an educator, you sure do harbor deep antipathy in general, towards minorities, and particularly towards black people. What you fail to admit or realize is that your central European brethren may have had it hard in their former countries, and again once they arrive on our shores. However, there were no federal laws restricting their rights to life, liberty and property as there were against black people beginning in the 1700's through the 1960's. During the aforementioned times, to the present, white skin carried/carries a certain currency, that no matter what European country a person hailed from, they were to be considered a step above any American minority. I find it peculiar that you claim that blacks in this country have it better than whites do. By what measure? Racism is rampant in this country(especially in the south where I live)black people are the most common target of racially motivated hate crimes; black people deal with prejudices and bigotries dished out by white people on an hourly basis; we are still treated as second class citizens by the majority of white America; and even when education attainment levels are studied and controlled, black people earn 80 cents to the white person's dollar. Luckily, I had both of my parents in the home, and they raised me with a healthy appreciation for the value of education. My education, which I am paying for now, has taught me to not be angry at white people for the things that were done in the past; to not hate someone because of the color of their skin; to work hard and ask for nothing; to keep learning; and last but not least, to be an honest person. With these attributes, no man, red, green, blue or yellow, can stand in the way of my dreams. So I ask you Ms. Grabar, did your education not teach you that your disgust for black people will do nothing but leave you not bitter but angry?

Hear Hear!
Thank you so much for putting into words what a lot of us have been feeling, and saying among ourselves. After all if we said these things in public we'd be called racists.

Thanks again!

One wonders...
Is it PC to say that "The MAN is keeping me down!" if one is white?

1) totally out of touch with reality (which disqualifies him from becoming POTUS)...

or

2) is a bare faced liar, bigot, and racist (which disqualifies him from becoming POTUS)

them's the facts jack ;)

oh, and by the way
one of the best ever articles on TH...you are to be commended Ms. Grabar!

Ms. Grabar
Well done Ms. Grabar! You speak for millions.

Well Done!
You made us proud! Well written. Thank You Ms. Grabar!!!

Awesome
Ms. Grabar, you did a heckuva job.

Too bad we can't hear this on CNN or Good Morning America. Why is that?

Let's see, the fact that millions of disenfranchised Americans who don't belong to the correct entitlement group have "issues" -causing them to "cling" to silly things like religion...

But the fact that they can't even talk about it in a public forum means THEY are the bitter ones...

Hmmm....I get it now.

Wow.
Change the ancestory from Eastern to Central Europe, and it's my family. My great grandparents only spoke German, and were illiterate, but came to the Land of Opportunity in the late 1800's, so their children would do better. Grandpa was bilingual, but still worked hard all his life to put food on the table for 5 children. My father was the youngest, and the only child to graduate high school. His brothers and sisters had to stop their educatiions and go to work to support the family during the Great Depression. And they ALL found work! No government handouts for them. They did menial jobs and were thankful for them.

Thank you Ms. Grabar for giving my family a voice also.

In a word, EXCELLENT.
No more needs to be said, Mary said it all. Does everyone here feeling the uniting yet???

Why the jobs left.
The reason that the jobs have left and continue to leave are all a part of the socialist dream as well. If you tax people enough to pay for other people's welfare, neither group will work for low wages. People on welfare get a better standard of living than most jobs provide and people who work have to make a higher wage to pay the taxes. Employers can't make enough money to pay the taxes and higher wages and still compete with somebody in a country with a less socialist government. Vote Democrat for more of the same, or vote Republican and get it a bit little slower.

From a first generation American
Miss Grabar,

Thank you very much for writting this comment.

I'm am now trying to translate it to Chinese so my parents can read it.

My family immigrated to America to escape Communism and to live free. We came legally.

We did not ask for any favors we just wanted the opportunity to work hard and make a good life.

My parents worked 12 hours a day so that my sister and I can go to school, so we don't have to work 12 hours a day.

Many of us did very well in school, but when we applied to college, the schools told us you worked too hard, you studied too much, it is unfair to black people.

They tell us that Black people deserve to go to these colleges more than you because they suffered more.

I think your family like my family never owned slaves, but why are we being punished for it?

Why does Barack Obama's children, who are rich, deserve to go to Princeton or Stanford, more that a poor White or Asian child?

I'm not bitter.....
I'm down right angry and I'm sending cash to the NCGOP http://www.ncgop.org

You hit the nail on the head; you go girl!

Thank you for a great piece!

Graber says:
"We were happy to use a welding torch, shovel, or broom..."

So says the poet with the Ph.D!

Been using that wielding torch lately? Hauling out that shovel! Cleaning all those dusty tomes with your handy broom!

If Obama uttered such inanity, he'd be the laughing stock of every right wing blog and radio station!

But the TownHall Poet Laureate dips her pen in racist blood and scribbles a screed worthy of Tom Metzger or David Duke and then TownHall chapter of the White Knights come out to cheer!

Huzzah! White Queen, Huzzah!

To quote Obama: "Words matter."
Your words, Mary, were extremely articulate, breathtakingly honest and as 'on target' as a Marine sniper's bullet when he gets a bad guy in his sights.

This article is a quintessential example of "telling it like it is"!

Mary...omg....brilliant
Brilliantly articulated. A great example of why it's not enough to label such world views as "wrong", but to articulate clearly WHY it is wrong.
And who could do better than this ? ...NO one.

Mary Graber's column
Great article. So good to read unvarnished truth.

Dziekuje bardzo
If I ever got a break because I am white, I would like to know about it so I can compare it to the times I was not "racially preferred."

Race exit polls in PA- who votes race?
In Pennsylvania, 93% of black men and 88% of black women voted Obama. Conversely, 43% of white men and 32% of white women voted Obama. As you can clearly see, whites are willing to vote on a black candidate, but the blacks are willing to vote on racial lines only. This is proof that whites have "gotten over" the race issue and blacks have not. Information from liberal CNN exit polls:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/# PADEM

Things will be EQUAL when blacks are willing to see Obama for the racist that he is and vote for a white candidate.

yes Barack Obama
Thank you Mary Graber for being our voice. I put myself through college with work, scholarships and loans, and as a nurse never made a heck of a lot of money. I never said "it's someone else's fault that I had to do this", or waited for someone else to help me. I just knew it was the only way to get ahead. This is what I was taught as a white middle class citizen, and I am really upset now when we who work and pay taxes so those on Welfare can stay at home and have more babies, are denigrated (what a word) by people who don't seem to work.
