Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When I went to see my childhood home in Rochester, New York, last Thanksgiving, I knew that the house would be smaller than I remembered. It is, indeed, tiny. As I drove the route I walked every day from Benjamin Franklin High School down Norton Street, down Jewel, to Beach Street, I wanted to weep at the wasteland the once working class neighborhood had become. Many of the houses, always plain and modest, but once maintained in neat yards, were boarded. My sanctuary, the Hudson Avenue branch of the public library, was closed. Otto’s, at the corner of Conkey Avenue and Saranac Street, where we used to buy penny candy on the way home from #8 School, closed after the 1964 riots and follow-up outbreaks of violence. In 1974 I walked to Quality Bakery on Joseph Avenue and promised the Jewish owner I would memorize the price list for my interview. I got the job. The business is gone now, indistinguishable from the other boarded buildings.

As a twelve-year-old I had been petrified at the thought of attending Ben Franklin. My fears were borne out when I was locked into French class at the direction of the principal over the P.A. system. In the halls, stampeding students were breaking glass and beating up teachers. The school day atmosphere rippled with intimidation. I was “asked” for quarters at my locker. As I walked home, I was knocked on the head—for carrying books. In the girls’ bathroom I shrank back, as older girls sported “Black Power” buttons. I begged to go to a Catholic school.

Teachers gave up in the classroom, and became satisfied with keeping students in their seats, entertaining them with chin-ups in the door frame or holding rap sessions on free love as my social studies teacher did.

Recently, National Public Radio interviewed high school teachers who had been severely beaten by students. The focus was on “connecting with” and “respecting” students to prevent such life-threatening assaults in the future.

The Supreme Court’s June 28 decision striking down racial quotas and forced busing demonstrates a return to sanity--but after nearly forty years of harm done to schoolchildren and neighborhoods.

Benjamin Franklin had once been a good school, I have been told. But in the early 70s when I started attending it as a seventh-grader, it was a Darwinian jungle. The social experiment of busing, rather than enhancing the educational experience, ended up making a cynic of this A-student. It turned a once diverse blue collar neighborhood of immigrants, new and settled—from Poland, the Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Germany, Italy—Christian and Jewish—into a blighted area.

I did go back to school, in my thirties, to earn a Ph.D. in English. But throughout my graduate school years I repeatedly heard about the need for “diversity”—as I had through high school. An immigrant from Slovenia, I walked past posters advertising grants and scholarships, only to learn that they were not for me, even though I had had no scholarship fund set up, nor any encouragement by parents to go to college. That liberal hero referred to above who in DC when turned around and heard footsteps and relaxed when he saw a white face, was jesse jackson. That comment received alot of press

reply to get on len
you stated:

Instead, I'm a defender of racial integration because I think it breaks down racial hostility and is better for our society.

____________
The implication of the above is that non-liberals are against integration. What they are against is forced integration such as busing, place racial ratios over merit. Your argument is apparantly that the end justifies the means such integregation supercedes everything else.

You think integration breaks down so called racial hostility. What is your evidence. What the evidence shows that when people of similar interests and class structure integrate there may be some benefit. But when there is great disparity in cultural traits and class in only reinforces stereotypes( l dont know about hatred which you are fixated on.) A while back in phila, the papers reported gang rape of black girls on black girls. So you tell if my grand-daughter goes to such a school how she will become a better person and leave with some good ideas about blacks. I will wait with eagerness for your answer.

It is common knowlege that in many school, blacks sit at one table in the lunch room; and whites another.

I will tell you a story and you might understand the rancor in me toward liberals. When my daughter was 16 she in the summer of 1982 went with some env organization, outback or something to MAine to work in clearing forests. She made a friendship with black boy; upper class; father a doctor at Columbia university. He came to my house; a very mature pleasant, confident kid. They kept in contact. He eventually went to Yale. He came to visit after his freshmen year. He was a different kid. Seem depressed; morose. That self-confident kid was gone. I know what happened since I read many stories about similar situations to kids like this who lived in an integrated world with kids of similar class and interests. At yale there were segregated dorms demanded by blacks; and you libs, if not you, those you blindly vote for and support, gave into these "racist" demands. And what this kid experienced there was to hate whitey; the racism of the society and all that jazz,. And I blame the liberals because they were so guilt ridden that they gave into this nonsense. In the book White Guilt by he brings this so well. And that is why guys like me, Tom Sowell, and other black conservatives have this visceral disdain for the liberal behavior in race matters. Liberals are phonies or assuming you are decent so scared to break the code. Just look how the liberal polticians swoon at the alter of sharpton and Jackson, two race whor s who have done more damage to people than David Duke has done. Duke Univ was no accident. Look at Al Gore which is typical of liberals. He came to phila in 2000 when electioneeing for presidency. He spoke at a black church and what did he say: Bush will bring the country to pre-civil days.

The liberals use race as I exemplified above to create racial hostiltiy. Get it. The evidence is there to be seen. It is not conservatives who do this. I am sure there are crackpots here and there, but they are not in the media, in the univerities etc influencing people.

And so if you want to break down racial barriers quit being a liberal; their record aint too good.

You write:

But if you ask a lot of blacks, they will tell you that they still experience racism.

__________________

I wish you would be more specific. Racism means everything from getting lynched for smiling at white women way back to now opposing affirmative action or more speficially racial quotas trumping merit. HEnce, who the heck knows what anyone is talking about when they bandy that word around,
you are guilty of tossing words with no referent. A word that means anything mean nothing. As i pointed out it is liberals that promote racial hostiltiy.

So let me test you and ask you if these are what you call racism:

Next door to me is a black family originally from the Islands; been here a long time. The other day I had a conversation with a 28 yr girl from that family, College grad; very pretty. Still single and no boyfriends. As you can tell, I am quite blunt and upfront. RAce does not phase; very little does,
So i kept pressing her why she is not finding anybody. Well, American black boys are to into sex and not mannered. Her word.
Then in the spirit of your great word INTEGRATION, I said to her, why dont you go looking for white boys. She said, she rather not do that,

I she a racist. She did attend an integrated college; mostly white. IT did not take.

Next story: We have a neighborhood council. And one of the members, my age 72, black and blue collar worker, came to my house to collect dues. And we were chatting how the value of our houses had increased, A lot of new people moving in, And he says to me proudly and with enthusiasm, something to the effect, that they are white people and he was glad of that. I slipped into the stupid liberal mode and felt embarrased for a second, and said as if to correct him; it does not matter as long as middle class. His glee in white people was for property values and keeping neibhorhood free from junk people.

But I thought about it later. That was nonsense on my part to sort of correct him with my middle class business, The fact of the matter is that more white people regardless of class improves property values and further increases the number of white people in the future who will be attracted,

So, was my fellow member of community, black, "racist"; was I "racist" in my thoughts after my relapse. WE were just factual. No hate, No effort to keep blacks out. Just stating the facts. It does illustrate that even so enlighentend as myself can fall into your trap for a few seconds.

When I was hiring people in my school I preferred not to hire black females. Racist and sexist? No. I wanted absolute freedom to fire without worrying about being accused of racism or sexism; i read enough about this and saw with my own eyes with a colleague of mine who was neither sexist nor a racist but a first class tyrant and SOB who fired a black female who I knew well. You cant bring a complaint that someone is an SOB. So pass a law and there will be ambulance chasers, and there will be those who cry racism and sexism.
I wanted absolute freedom to pursue my way of educating and did not to have to walk tip toes because of fear of being sued; hence, why gamble. The safest person to hire is a white male because if you fire him he is up the creek in crying about race and gender.
Now is that racism or a good business practice. We wait for your answer,

Tom Sowell and others have made the point that these sex and racial laws are gotten around not because of racism because employers want to have the freedom to fire incompetents without having to worry about being sued. And in American everyone sues; and that is how the phony Edwards made his money on the phony suit on silicone impants. Liberals: gods gift to morality

you write

Most of us liberals think that a black American should not have to be any kind of a "hero" to improve himself or herself; the ordinary black should have the same opportunities as the ordinary white. Conservatives seem to find all of this very odd and terrible, which leads me to unpleasant conclusions about their motives.

___________

Where do get these stories from. Blacks have to be heroes and supermen to get on? Give me some examples. The civil service is filled with blacks way out of proportion to their numbers in the population. WEll, one does not to be a genius to work in civil service.

It maybe that many of reality based not phony perceptions that blacks statisically dont measure up in achievment to whites, asians,. That is fact.
And hence, given human nature, do you believe in such?, blacks are percieved to be not up to it and that does hurt a competent black.

Big deal. The IRish faced that problem when they came here because so many were drunk; hence, Irish need not apply. And it was true. Of course, not every Irishman a drunk but a good number were. So, prudence, makes for caution.

After all, one of the liberal heros put it well when he said that walking in DC and he turns around and sees a white face, he relaxes. A racist. He is just aware of the statistics and follows the boyscout motto be prepared when there is higher probability of danger.

And so the soluton to the problem you mention does not lie in the hearts of racist conservatives. When blacks as a group improve this will benefit individual blacks. Nothing to do with racism and hate. Human beings are statisical machines and probabilites affect their perceptions; if not, the race would gone the way of extinction. Every cat is not going to chase a bird, but many will, and birds have to "birdest" to survive. Do you understand.

You know, it is widely known that white and blacks are much more at ease with one another from the supposedly racist south than in the liberal north. Liberals in the north and the fancy EAst and West Side of ny talk a good game; the nytimes promotes a black plagiarist. Liberals have got issues with blacks that they need some counseling to get real.

Compare Wm Buckley who ex communicated the John Birch Society from the conservative movement way back; and then wrote a scathing article accusing Pat Buchann of anti-semitism isolating him from the conservative movement. And what do we see of liberals; Harry Reid genuflecting to the likes of KOs, moveon, jackson and sharpton. These are crucial elements of the liberal coalition. IF you read their blogs they are full of anti-semitism, vitroil toward Bush; he is a nazi according to dick durbin. you dont see that in the conservative mainstream camp, David Duke does not get a hearing but the worst vermin are treated with respect by mainstream liberals.
It is you guys are filled with hate. The evidence is there for all to see.

The difference between people like myself and liberals and maybe you is that I am not afraid of blacks; i am not intimidated; i feel no guilt and I dont reward nonsense and crying racism all the time.

One last story. Again one of my next door neighbor the brother of the girl above who wont date white boys is in the Coast Guard. He stopped over the other day and we were chatting. He told me that both black and white officers were hard on blacks; not mean, but much more strict in demanding perfection. So what. HE was not having a nerveous breakdown about it; He is doing well(naturally i was his mentor), but you are having a nerveous breakdown about it. Loosen up. Life is not always fair. But he is not getting lynched and doing very well.

AS Chris hitchens stated somewhere, and he is outspoken atheist, he rather have fundmentalist baptist in a foxhole with him than a liberal as long as the baptist did not bug about converting. I feel the same. I am sure there crackpots in the religous area, but they have little influence in what goes on in schools, universities and the press. But they get to you. Get some perspective.
