Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Looking to the case of Virginia, where legislators offered an expression of "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery, the Georgia NAACP is demanding that the legislature apologize for slavery. Thus, they continue to exploit the suffering of their slave forebears. One wonders, were it not for slavery, what would these agitators do?

Recognizing the hollowness of such "apologies," Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson said, "Nobody here was in office when slavery was practiced." He is right: Apologies on behalf of others are empty and do nothing more than promote one's estimation of one's self.

But that is precisely why liberals—who are most likely to mock the notion of personal sin—demand such an apology: The blame is cast on one's forebears and the price is paid by others.

Nor do the liberal elite enact legislation that affects them adversely. It is the elite white liberals who agitate for affirmative action—the collective amends and the implicit apology going on for decades now. It's easy for them. The elite do not stand in line before the factory door. They are not a number in a stack of applications in college admissions and financial aid offices. "Give them affirmative action!" they cry generously, while they use their family’s connections and earning power to get into the best schools and companies.

The same impulse motivated the well-heeled radicals in the 1960s, who blamed the injustices around them on others.

One need only look at the Port Huron Statement, written in 1962 by a twenty-one-year-old Tom Hayden with the input of 60 of his college-age peers that outlined the grievances of an admittedly privileged group who had the luxury of attending universities. All around them they saw injustice, poverty, and inauthenticity. They saw an unequal distribution of wealth and so they applied their parents’ playbook, The Communist Manifesto. But it was the real proletariat—the working classes—who paid the price for their selfish idealism. It was this disaffected group, disgusted by the behavior of the radical elites, that voted in Richard Nixon in 1968. The divide remains between red and blue America.

That generation—whether a public figure like Garrison Keillor on taxpayer- supported public radio or the radical at the neighborhood party--is very quick to claim credit for having "marched and changed the world." But that generation actually did harm to the Civil Rights movement—not to mention their responsibility for millions of deaths in Vietnam.

Being the spoiled egotists that they were, the radicals did not limit their project to redressing one aspect of American life that did not live up to the Founding Fathers' ideal that "all men are created equal." Instead, the flower children took it upon themselves to overthrow Western civilization and refashion society in their own image. A bunch of unkempt, loud, sexually promiscuous, and sometimes violent young people with an obvious communist platform alienated potential allies, who otherwise agreed with the idea of equal rights.

Yet, in their claim of having "changed the world" these flower children pride themselves as if they had withstood the tanks of Tiananmen Square. No credit is given to our culture’s heritage of Christian universal rights, which more than in any other place in the world has found its full realization. More often it was the working class, police officers and their families, who died and suffered.

As stated explicitly in the Port Huron Statement, the institution targeted to effect the overthrow of Western civilization was the university, where one has the luxury of instituting affirmative action and agitating for policies that will affect those outside its ivy-covered walls: workers, soldiers, and those who refuse to march lock-step to their ideology. Inside these walls the elites offer higher salaries to candidates of a certain race. They calculatingly write on the fashionable topics of race and thereby promote themselves. (Yes, Virginia, some whites who write dissertations and books on black issues do it because that’s where the jobs and publishing contracts are; just go to a graduate student or faculty party and listen in.) Furthermore, the radicals have changed the curriculum to eliminate the thinkers of past centuries and replaced them with—guess what--those after 1960. Now a student can just about graduate from a university without having read anything written before 1960 in a humanities class.

The ideology promoted in the universities is that the radicals and those who agree with them are responsible for all the good in this country. All that is bad is the result of the incompleteness of their project.

The effort to get apologies for injustices committed decades and centuries ago emanates from the view of activists as superior to their predecessors. It is the shout of the child to the parent: "Apologize!"

It is also a way to keep their status visible and to continue victimhood in order to continue such policies as affirmative action, an idea that directly contradicts notions of fairness and universal rights. The white promoters of affirmative action most often come from the privileged classes, those with the money and connections who know they will go to Ivy League Universities and get the best jobs.

Those who suffer from affirmative action are the lower classes, the students who may work harder but are beat out by the minority student, or who lose funding to minority students. They are the factory workers, like members of my family, who may have worked their way up to supervisory positions but are told explicitly that race trumps ability in job promotion. Or, told back in the 1970s that supervisory positions at the factory were to henceforth go to minorities, they left their jobs. It goes on.

It may be hard for the social progressives to believe this but it is true. Yes, white people who have no connections have to do things like wait on tables to put themselves through community college. I know because I had to do it. But people I know and am related to who have worked in blue collar jobs since they were eighteen and struggle to put their children through college will not speak up about this for fear of losing their jobs. The white elites rarely speak to the white working classes, unless it is to force their preconceived notions of "white privilege" on them.

Affirmative action offers upper management a way to get sacrifices from the real workers and then take credit for their largesse. Similarly, the students who had the money and leisure to march in the 1960s did it on the backs of their working class colleagues who fought their wars and picked up the slack from less qualified workers "affirmatively" ushered into the workplace.

But it’s the privileged—now in their fifties and sixties--who will corner you at a party and brag about how they "changed the world." The effort to get government apologies allows them and their children or grandchildren who tool around campuses clad in designer jeans in BMWs to wrap the cloak of righteousness around themselves.

It is the black liberals too who have hardly anything to say unless it exploits the sufferings of their slave forebears. Even while their and other non-white groups’ buying power "skyrockets," according to a recent University of Georgia study, even as they run the cities like Atlanta, write the editorials of the daily newspaper, they fall back to their slave forebears. The "legacy of slavery" also fuels the careers of rappers spewing out lyrics so vile their actual slave forebears would be ashamed. The "legacy of slavery" supports black and white poets and writers who exploit the suffering of slaves to advance their own careers.

The fact that slaves made incredible sacrifices for their children (as Frederick Douglass shows by the example of his mother in his autobiography) and even showed love for the children of their owners is a testament to the human spirit and Christian charity. Such examples, of course, have been repeated under other extremes of human injustice: Communist pogroms, concentration camps, war zones. In all periods of history are stories of the human spirit rising, and no less in the case of slavery in the U.S.

But rather than using the examples of their forebears as inspiration, many blacks and their white liberal exploiters, capitalize on slavery for their own advancement. If anything, the black descendants ought to criticize how the white elite have used the legacy of slavery to their own advantage, to cull political favor, to position themselves as superior to others in their own race, to write the books that publishers want and that will earn them royalty checks and gain them tenure.

One wonders, were it not for slavery, were it not for the suffering of these people that black and white elites cash in on, would these elites in the academy, the media, and public life be anything? Isn’t it time they stopped exploiting slaves? The apologies will do nothing for those who suffered, the slaves. They have gone on to their rewards.

Face it: It’s the elites who want to live off the capital of slaves in one way or another. The agitation for apologies reeks of insincerity and self-promotion.

It’s time to move on. Black descendants should display some of the dignity of their forebears. White elites should finally do some real, productive work.

I am an American with a mixed racial background, and have mixed feeling on the subject. I believe that Mary has made some good points, about those who use Slavery as a way to advance a LIBERAL Agenda. IMO, Blacks of today should embrace the freedom that we have, that our ancestors didn’t have, and stop acting as if we are still SLAVES.

I understand why so many Whites dislike Affirmative Action, as they feel that "deserving, hard working" Whites are being "discriminated" against, but there is no comparison between the two types of discrimination! Affirmative Action has been around for 40+ years, and may Whites feel that there has been enough progress to end this "quota" system.

Does Afterlives Action break apart White families? Are White people sold and owned as private property, under Affirmative Action? Are White people denied the opportunity to learn to read, write, or get an education? Don’t forget that Affirmative Action was created because 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation Southern Blacks were in a state if unofficial slavery due to laws set up to keep them as second class citizens, if not virtual slaves. Affirmative Action would not have been needed if after the Civil War Blacks were given the RIGHTS/FREEDOMS that they were promised. If you read American History books you will know that "Yankees" came and helped Blacks out in the South until it became a political liability.

There a residue on the Black community, and we still suffering from the effects of slavery. At a time when it was Illegal to learn to read and write, under penalty of death. A time when there was no justice for a Black man in a White court, (One of the reasons why so many Blacks celebrated after the O.J. verdict). A time when hard working Blacks had their labor and "profits” stolen by White slave holders and the overseer’s. I don’t justify these things, but offer these examples of why some in the black community don’t see the benefits of and EDUCATION, the American Legal system, and hard work.

40 years after being freed from Egyptian slavery, there were Jews who were still were caught up in the slave mentality! If America had not put off the hard work of integration and gave true equality to blacks after the CIVIL WAR, instead of waiting 100 years Blacks would be much further along that we are now. The fact is if the SOUTH had accepted the DEFEAT to the UNION, and the US completed the work they started in the RECONSTRUCTION, instead if waiting 100 years, and being forced into compliance by the Federal Government, with the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, I believe American society would be different than it is today. 40 years after "truly experiencing freedom", it is sad but true fact some blacks are still in a slave mentality. In fact there are more slaves today in America that any time in history, only now all AMERICANS are slaves to Washington and BIG FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

The Current Condition
People look at the state of society and think how it should be and not how it got to that condition. The radicals in the sixties saw injustice and said things must change. What they refused to see was the degree of change that had and was occuring in society. The changes they forced have ruined large segments of the black community and actually slowed economic progress for us all. The existence of slavery in America in the past is used to show the evil of America in the present. I would ask who is better off because of slavery in the past. If slavery had not existed would the millions of blacks living in America be here? Most assuredly not. If they were alive at all they would be living in Africa. The conditions of their lives would no doubt be much worse. If there had been no slavery would the Civil War have happened? Would the damage to our nation and the 600,000 deaths have occured. As a nation we surely would be better off had the war not happened. Rather than dwell on the slavery of the past we should concentrate on the slavery of the present. Millions are living in slavery and rather than have our guts twisted over what happened in the past we should work to free those in the here and now.

Tre Belco
You've entirely misunderstood why whites like me don't like affirmative action. It's not a racial thing, but a class thing. I see wealthy white males easily skirt around affirmative action. They still get into the best colleges, and they have enough connections to get great jobs when they get out.

It's whites in the bottom half economically who are suffering. But it is whites in the top half, who aren't suffering, who keep promoting it, and then congratulating themselves on how wonderful they are.

Send them all (that is, the wealthy white liberals and leftists) to the collective farm for the next twenty years. That should shut them up.

Corcodile Apologies
Our politicians like to 'apologize' publicly for systemic failures made by previous generations. I call them Crocodile Apologies, because they are usually accompanied by crocodile tears.

Usually politicians apologize to television cameras for mistakes that were made many generations ago. For example, it is now en vogue to apologize for slavery. While slavery is a blot on our national historical conscience, there are no Americans alive today who are guilty of practicing slavery.

How about a big real apology for screwing up K-12 education from the 1950s onwards? Now that is a mistake that continues to fester, so real, living Americans are involved. And, there is certainly plenty of culpability to go around!

Is there a presidential candidate (on either side) who would like to get 'first water' by being the first to apologize for getting the Govt mired into ownership of schools?

It is very simple: despite our best intentions, we messed up!

Of course there were disparities, unequal outcomes, unfairness etc. But, as a result of our 'solution', the Govt:

* builds, owns and operates schools
* sets curriculum
* hires teachers, administrators, staff
* negotiates salaries with unions
* raises taxes

Results?

* more 'unequal outcomes', unfairness
* high costs that outpace inflation
* low (and steadily worsening) quality

Imagine what might have transpired if the 'reformers' of the 1950s and 1960s had mandated Govt vouchers (only for the needy) - and nothing else!

sorry about the typo:
That should be:

Crocodile Apologies ..

The middle shall not hold much longer
Reading Mary's piece and reflecting on how the children of the dirty hippies, the rich spoilt brats of rich spoilt brats, are being violent thugs in the name of "peace", I can not help but conclude that the middle will not hold much longer.

Forget Nixon and even Reagan, there is a solid base for a true reactionary President to get elected. Throw in the coming collapse of the housing market and we could see dramatic social and polticial change.

Affirmative Action
I neither like it nor dislike it. everyone deserves equal opportunity.

However, I would like to point out that as originally written, the Affirmative Action Act of 1972 (yes, there is an actual act of Congress with that name) specifically prohibited discrimination against non-minority applicants and also prohibited favoritism toward minority applicants for any given job. Rather, it codified a specific set of guidelines to ensure that all professions and educational opportunities would be open to all people, of all ethnicities, based solely upon merit. Or IOW, the idea was that given the same educational opportunities to start with, resulting in the same level of achievement at the end of the educational process, the end result should be that jobs and professions in the U.S. should have minority "representation" that more-or-less equaled the minority's percentage of the population. And BTW, the AAA specifically prohibited "quotas", either in accepting students for institutions of higher education or in hiring them after graduation.

Where the rot set in was when the generation of "progressives" who held sway at the time (I think of them as the Adlai Stevenson generation) deliberately ignored the last mentioned provision, established quotas for both hiring and education, and used the rest of the act as an excuse for what is now called "reverse discrimination". Their rationale' was that American society as it existed in the present (not the past) was so sick, and so racist, that it needed to be brought to heel as quickly, and preferably as savagely, as possible. Or (again) IOW, government officials and university officials deliberately ignored a provision of the law to further a social agenda - namely, their desire to "make the majority answer for their crimes". Please not- not the "crimes" ofg their forebears, but their own. Which this group basically defined as refusing to be good socialists.

"Affirmative Action" would be neither controversial, or devisive, or largely ineffective (all of which it is today), if not for the fact that thirty-five years ago, a relatively small group of radicals in government and academia decided to twist the rules to attack a society they hated. Namely, ours.

And the rest of us failed to hold them accountable for their violation of one of the bedrock provisions of the very law they were using against that society.

cheers

Tre Belco
Tre Belco, Because affirmative action doesn't rise to the level of slavery as an injustice against humanity does not mean that affirmative action isn't an injustice nonetheless. Welfare and the War Against Poverty (i.e. White Guilt) are far more responsible for the plight of poor Black America than the vestiges of slavery.

Hollow indeed
TreBelco-many good points have you made.

I have always thought of Affirmative Action as a basically-wrong-but-necessary temporary measure to try to level the playing field a bit. However, it must be recognized that it's not without negative consequences for the people it purports to help: it created 'tokens', and the problem that minorities who rise in any rank are somewhat suspect: rather than being seen for their merit, they can be dismissed as part of the quota.
It's therefore imperative that we end AA sometime, so that people's success becomes their own.
Descendants of slaves should be indignant at the way they are USED by the elite liberals. This "apology" is simply a way of keeping alive a rallying point that's been successful in the past. Someday though, people are going to wake up to that, see it as the pandering condescension it truly is. I often think that the generational welfare culture created by the liberal agenda has done more harm to black Americans than slavery ever did. Why? Because it killed spirits and souls in a way that even slavery didn't do.

To your point SunThe1 ...
A few years ago, columnist Leonard Pitts (no not Earl Pitts, American) wrote an article about how students like him received special recognition. The point Mr. Pitts, a black man, was trying to make was that people's racits tendencies would automatically make them think he received some type of affirmative action award. His "gotcha" came later in the article where tells the reader that he was a gifted student who earned special merit based on his scholastic capabilities.

I sent Mr. Pitts a letter to which he never replied. My point? The only reason people think that a black person received anything without deserving it is because affirmative action exists in the first place! If it did not, there would be no need to question ones achievements, would there?

Courageous column
This is an excellent piece. I stayed out of academia upon realizing that the institution is just too corrupt -- in the liberal arts/social sciences, anyway. Who wants to work with such people? It is a shame that so many people in our country hold these academics up as some sort of high priests. They are among the most avaracious, dishonorably groups out there, with exceptions of course. Just mingling with them at these faculty parties made me want to take a shower. Ms. Grabar is obviously one of the exceptions, and I hope that she does not pay a professional price for being forthright about her views.

Ph.D., J.D.
I agree wholeheartedly. When I got my Ph.D., I was a socialist. After I saw the way the left ran things in academia, I backed away from socialism and now vote Republican.

What is strange is that even among themselves, leftists in academia are not very happy. Just the other day, I heard about two leftist women, both ardent feminists, who were screaming at each other over some minor point about plans for a new building. And this (except for the screaming) isn't unusual. Leftists getting angry with leftists is fairly typical in academia these days.

And the irony is...
If not for slavery, Black Americans would not now be citizens in this great country or ours. They would not have access to the benefits of living in the USA, with all the benefits that people the world over dream for and die for. If not for slavery, 'Black Americans' as a group would not exist. Remember, in Africa, tribal warefare, grinding povery and rampant AIDS is the norm. Do you wish to return there?

However your ancestors got here (mine was a teenaged indentured servant), please show some gratitude and be grateful for the incredible opportunities that you do have in the USA. And STOP your whining. It's so sixties.

I know this is getting old...
"not to mention their responsibility for millions of deaths in Vietnam."

The blood is on the hands of the generation that sent the soldiers, not on the generation that was drafted to go and fight and die in Vietnam.

wanda gag
The blood is on the hands of the communists, and on the hands of the "fellow travelers." Will we ever get an apology from them? Of course not.

Apologies
This was a good column, Mary.

And several of the postings were fine as well.

Finally, postings of discussion. Last night while reading a column and preparing a posting, I noticed that the posting forum had become a personal conversation pit. I hope the younger readers take their personal comments somewhere else.

In any case, I'm against apologies for past wrongs. It really serves no useful purpose. Why should anyone apologize for something said or done by someone else?

What would be further inanity would be to pay reparations to people who were not involved in what some claim an apology is due.

Forget apologies, forget reparations. Don't forget the past, but don't dwell in it. One can't act to correct all wrongs done in the past.

Is someone apologizing and paying reparations to the Irish, Italian, Polish, and other ethnic groups who were mistreated in the past?

How about Roman enslavement and persecution? And the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians? And African tribes? American Indians? How about the Mongols, Vandals, Goths, and other invading people. Were they right or wrong? I could go on for volumes, but I think you'll be happier if I don't. At least I know the liberal apologists would.

By the way, per Charles Darwin in some quarters, my ancestor climbed a tree and took a dump on a traveling slug one day. Should I apologize to the descendants of that slug?

Evil Liberalism
Being a leftist means you never say you're sorry.
Being a leftist means you never admit you were wrong.

Arrogant leftists also presume to be more intelligent than those who do not march in lockstep with them. This is not just wrong, it is reprehensibly dishonest.

Moreover leftists take their arrogance one step further. No, make that two. Their presumed intellectualism means that those who deign to disagree are "stupid."

Because they think themselves intellectually superior means they believe that they are invariably right and those not with them are therefore wrong. This is the Fallacy of the Argument From Authority. It is based on their ignominious pretense of intellectual superiority.

Al Gore flunked out of Vanderbilt divinity school, and yet Gore is held by the left to be profoundly intelligent.

Liberalism is lie built upon lie, and it is evil.

thanks for
cutting to the chase, Mary! Maybe we could actually move forward, if we didn't keep moving backward.

What a rant
Some TH columnists really get worked up & then the free association begins. Everything they've ever hated some out. Here we start talking about whether Georgia legislature should express regret about slavery (which seems like a no brainer -- it will make some people feel better and harm nobody). Somehow, we're talking about what Tom Hayden (who is he again?) wrote in 1962 and the fact that some white kids are too poor to go to college (it should only be blacks?).

Frog
To my point exactly! Thanks.
One day it (Affirmative Action) will begin to bother the black community so much that they will rise up and call for an end to it.

Reformed hippie
Recently met an old hippie who was now living a very normal, financially secure life. He asked me what I'd been doing during the 60's. Working, raising children, I told him. His response, 'Oh, so you're one of those who held the country together while we were out tearing it apart'. See, some of them do learn. But they don't learn much--he was still a liberal, just too old to act up anymore.

Let Me Guess
'"Their presumed intellectualism means that those who deign to disagree are "stupid."'

Somebody called you stupid right? How tragic for you.

Liberal "Activists" and Race Hustlers
Blacks utilize affirmative action get jobs they're not qualified for, get promotions to positions for which they aren't qualified and then utilize their new authority to "hook up" their family/friends. This is the same tactic utilized by "privileged" whites (especially "activists" from the 60s)to move into positions of power in the academic, legal and political world. All the while, low-level white collar, blue collar and military guys are busting their a** trying to make ends meet. White power brokers keep the street blacks on the government plantation (with the help of the race hustlers) with government "assistance" money stolen from the taxpayer. High level blacks and whites are happy as their personal agendas are realized but the working man is taxed to death and street blacks kill each other over drugs, cars and women. The poor children of both races don't have a chance. This is the legacy of people like Tom Hayden and Jessee Jackson/Al Sharpton.

Ironic Facts
I have always found that some history regarding BLACKs is never mentioned. Sure, we have MLK Day, and February as BLACK HISTORY Month. But politically, very few examples from our past. Many Liberals can claim Carol Moseley Braun, D-IL as the first BLACK FEMALE Senator (1993-1999). Illinois now celebrates with Sen Barack H Obama, D-IL (2005-Present). The first three BLACKs to have served in the US Senate Sen Hiram Rhodes Revels, Republican-Mississippi (1870-1871), Sen. Blanche K Bruce, Republican-Mississippi (1875-1881), and Sen. Edward W. Brooke, Republican-Massachusetts (1967-1979).
Between 1868-1901, twenty-one BLACKs from SOUTHERN (post Confederate) states and all with the Republican party served in the US House. No BLACKs served between 1901-1929. The interesting statistic from this brief information is that the Republican Party lost its vision after 1935.
A more interesting fact is that out of the original 12 states that made up the Confederacy, ARKANSAS (Bill Clinton homestate) has not elected ANY BLACK to the US House or US Senate. (1868-Present, NADA, NOTHING, NO ONE) 139 years Bill. NEW YORK took until 1945, and California until 1963. Only FIVE BLACKs to have served or serving in the US SENATE?!?!?! NO ONE QUALIFIED FROM ARKANSAS? Yeah, I guess that Ole STARS AND BARS has really held them back from serving. The South has its history. Liberals are quick to point that out. I believe some SOUL searching should be done in the next few Senate election cycles. Can you name the twenty-seven states that have yet to elect a BLACK to Congress?
If Hillary has any "ounce of blackness" as her Selma, AL southern drawl showed, she will withdraw, and allow "AFFIRMATIVE ACTION" be her guiding light. ELECT BARACK OBAMA! Or, will she stay, and claim "best qualified wins?"

Just some random "stupid" thoughts.

Two Cents Worth
I was drawn to the following comment:

"It is also a way to keep their status visible and to continue victimhood in order to continue such policies as affirmative action, an idea that directly contradicts notions of fairness and universal rights..."

Amen.

The issue of discrimination could have been put to bed forty years ago except for the need for those who were then near Martin Luther King (not King himself) to keep Dr. King's legacy alive. Unfortunately, their cause was not the cause of Dr. King. Their cause was to retain a vestige of power that would permit them to live off their victims and the reputation of Dr. King. Their victims however include both their own followers and those companies from whom they extort great sums of money to avoid the label 'racist' and the picket lines they would otherwise draw from their other victims.

Dealing with only the latter group, men like Jesse Jackson have a vested interest in permanent victimhood for those who follow him. Affirmative Action is but one method that is used to actually hurt those people whom the laws were designed to protect. Those who receive AA appointments do so with a stigma that they are only there to satisfy a quota whether they are the most qualified or not. Those who are not well qualified continue the stereotype that perpetuates the stigma that is unfairly associated with those mentioned first.

The author and many others on this page have already told how other more qualified applicants for jobs, entrance to a university, etc. are harmed by AA appointments who rise above them without merit. But the beneficiaries of AA appointments are hurt too for the reasons previously stated.

Excellent Article
Dr. Grabar,

This is a great article. Kudos to you for telling the truth.

A couple of comments
1. Jews were never held in slavery in Egypt.

2. All races have been subjected to slavery at some point in time. Actually, whites more so than blacks. Yet you don't here them constantly going on about how their ancestors were abused.

3. Their is not a single person living in the US today that was a slave or slave holder. In fact, their is not a single person whose grandparents were either. So who do we apologize to.

4. At least 5000 blacks were slave holders. Considering the proportion to the population, this is a rather large number. Do they apologize as well?

5. Affirmative action does not benefit a single person and never has. If you can't get a position by your own merit, you will never be able to achieve a single thing. If someone tells me that a particular individual graduated from Harvard, I think great that person must be an achiever. But then if they say he is black, I think the position and grades were likely given to him. I know several MD's who are given positions of responsibility as a consequence of affirmative action, they have to be constantly watched as they constantly put patients into hazardous situations and do cause harm. I am not saying that blacks don't make good doctors, only that if you artificially produce merit, problems are caused.

6. I have lived in the South my entire life. I know only two families that had slaves. The majority of the population of the state consist of people who did not and likely migrated here. Still once you have been in the South for several years you do yearn for the freedom that we had for four years in 1860's.

7. Why doesn't the NAACP apologize for the fact that blacks make up 15% of the population, yet are responsible for 90% of the social ills in our country???

Apologize
I think we whites should apologize for slavery. As someone of European descent, I apologize to the Native American types (even though they themselves migrated here, too) for Columbus and the other European explorers. As a Christian, I also apologize for the Crusades. And finally, as a guy who drinks German beer from time to time, I apologize for the Holocaust.

Whew, i can get back to work now!

If it would save time, maybe all the white males in the US could just wear a T-shirt to work every Friday saying "I'M SORRY" on the front.

I'm sorry, too
All my grandparents came from Italy. I'm sorry for all the folks who got fat on pizza.

Opportunity denied
Tre Belco asks: Sunday, March, 18, 2007 5:14 AM

"Are White people denied the opportunity to learn to read, write, or get an education?"

When there were less qualified "minorities" and the quotas had to be met, yes, Asians and others were denied. The fact that most students in California universities aren't Asian is ample evidence that selection is not based on merit. Suppose that selections were made double-blind?

Next time you're up for open-heart surgery, ask first to see your surgeon's SATs and med school grades.

Whenever they ask me "race", I fill in "human" if possible, or "native American" (I was born here) if no write-in space is offered.

Reality Check
Like whites have gotten successful because of their "merits"? puhleez!!!

This whole country functioned under affirmative action for whites for 200 years... it was called segregation!

As my black grannie used to say: "If you're white in this country and you're *not* successful...there's something wrong with you.

If you want an example of affirmative action in thw white community, just look our current president George Bush Jr. Born on third base, thought he hit a triple. Shows how money and connections can lift up even the biggest idiot.

Apologize Again

I read that the Cherokee Nation members recently voted to revoke the tribal citizenship of an estimated 2,800 descendants of the people the Cherokee once owned as slaves.

That article referred to black slaves, but I've read that Indians also had white slaves and Indian slaves; white people sold Indians to Europe as slaves; rich white Europeans brought white slaves to America, who worked off their debts; and rich Negroes had both white and Negro slaves.

As a Slave Descendant - I apologize
I apologize for being a descendant of Slaves

I also apologize for my grandparents and parents being discriminated against in the south. I apologize to all white descendants who ancestors that own slaves. I’m sorry that my ancestors had children and their children had children. I wish that they didn’t have any kids so that white descendants would not be burden with the shame of slavery.

I realize now that slavery in America was the entire fault of Blacks and their African Rulers that sold them as slaves.

Thanks you townhall.com for making this clear for me.

Again, I apologize for being a descendant of Slaves

More apologies
I apologize for my black great-grandmother's radar-beam sexuality that drove my white great-grandfather to her bed on the plantation he owned. Then she had the nerve to have 6 children by him. She took advantage of an unsuspecting man, I'm sure.

She had sense enough to leave the plantation, though, cause there wasn't no opportunity there for her children. And leave the property there to his white wife and their white children--which they still own today. So maybe she did her penance?

More apologies
Good points, just one and dixiecrat. My point is that it's a waste of time to apologize for something i didn't do.

If meaningless apologies on behalf of dead people, made by people who didn't commit the offenses, which materially change nothing, make you happy, then I'm down with the idea. Just realize that the circumstances of your life before and after the public apology will be exactly the same.

missing the point
No one is asking individual whites to apologize for slavery. However, it is appropriate for the U.S. govt and slave states to apologize for supporting it as a legal institution.

Next windmill... please!!!

In answer to your exit question: Yes! You should apologize to the French.

"missing the point"

"No one is asking individual whites to apologize for slavery. However, it is appropriate for the U.S. govt and slave states to apologize for supporting it as a legal institution."

You got 360,222 apologies written in blood from the Union Army. The KKK Democrats resisted reconstruction for another 100 years, resisted the Civil Rights Act, and created and maintain the welfare victim plantation. Get more from them and Robert "W-N" Byrd.

Ph.D., J.D.
"This is an excellent piece. Ms. Grabar is obviously one of the exceptions, and I hope that she does not pay a professional price for being forthright about her views."

Well said, couldn't agree more. When I read this the first time, I was wondering how many will realize the brilliance of this piece in debunking one of the major operative strategies of the left: apologize for something, which happened long ago, for which they've blamed others for, thereby moving the issue front and center, thus creating a current debt present generations are meant to feel guilty about - concerning which they are more than prepared to inject themselves into with remedies and solutions.

The same tactic is being used with the phony global warming scam, which present US generations are also meant to feel guilty about. As a matter of fact, in the public schools, that all they teach: You as an American are REQUIRED to feel and accept guilt for all sorts of things.

At no time and no where do liberal/leftist EVER take responsibility and blame for the tremendous carnage and waste for which they and their policies are DIRECTLY responsible for.

Also, it's not only in academia where people who disagree with leftists are punished for their views. Most gov't bureaucracies, top heavy with liberals, support their own and punish their detractors. The same mechanism is used anywhere that leftists have gained ascendancy (Hollywood, Unions, etc.). Whether it's an indication of personal insecurity or committed ideology, the fact is, they corruptly discriminate along political lines.

Again, Ms Grabar wrote a great piece here.

Is the Bible a lie?
What do you mean Jews were not held as slaves in Egypt? I guess the Book of Exodus was Zionist propaganda...

Slavery in Egypt

Everybody was a slave with Israel in the beginning.

Joseph's father Jacob (Israel) and whole family settled in Goshen because of the famine. The remaining five years were so bad that "every man" in Egypt first sold his money, then cattle, then land, and finally themselves as slaves to Pharaoh for seed to plant. Furthermore, they had to give 20% of the crop to Pharaoh. See Gen. 47:1-26. The only exception was the land of the priests because they had a standing (government) allotment of food.

Also, during their stay in Egypt, it would be improper to call them "Jews" (= from the tribe of Judah) because they were still the whole family of Israel and his 12 sons (including Judah). That early pharaoh was Semitic and from the conquering Hyksos, but later kings were not. By then, the Semitic "sons of Israel" were resented and pressed into hard labor because they had multiplied and prospered and filled the land. These kings had forgotten how Joseph saved their lives.
