Are you concerned about new terror threats in the wake of the Christmas attempted attack?

Presidential nominations should not be Lifetime Achievement Awards. When Republicans forget that, they lose. Examples: Bob Dole in 1996, John McCain in 2008. Democrats make mistakes too, but typically they head toward central casting. Examples: John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama.

Arguing with Idiots By Glenn Beck

The ideal GOP candidate would be intelligent, articulate, and debate-tested. The candidate, preferably with experience as a governor and not just as a legislative orator, would be able to unite social and fiscal conservatives and use wit and warmth to disarm media twits.

Will Republicans have such a candidate for 2012? Maybe. Mike Huckabee comes closest, yet fiscal conservatives trash his economic views. Congressional elections a year from now may signal a GOP comeback and bring new faces to the fore.

But you can be the first on your block to know the name of a strong candidate for 2020. He fits the specifications and, as frosting on the cake, has the last name of Cruz, a big plus for a political party that needs to capture the Hispanic vote to offset the Democrats' lock on African-Americans.

Meet Ted Cruz, the Republican Obama.

His Cuban father, Rafael, fought alongside Castro as a teenager for three years until the forces of dictator Fulgencio Batista captured, beat, tortured, and almost killed him. A bribe from Rafael's dad freed him. Rafael made it to America and in 1957 entered the University of Texas. He spoke no English and had $100 that his mom had sewn into his underwear.

Rafael learned English and was soon giving pro-Castro fundraising speeches to Austin civic groups. Later, when Castro revealed his Communism, Rafael apologized to the funders for unwittingly misleading them. Ted Cruz's aunt in Cuba fought against Castro until his forces captured and tortured her. Cruz at the dinner table learned of the evils of Marxism.

Cruz went to Faith West Academy in the Houston suburb of Katy and graduated from Second Baptist High School in Houston. He learned about the usefulness of markets at the Free Enterprise Institute and earned scholarship money by giving 70-80 speeches to local civic groups. Like dad, like boy, but the son extolled free market economics, not Castro.

Cruz headed to Princeton and became a champion debater, winning first place at the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debate Championships. (He can still bring it: When I interviewed him—see "All together now," WORLD, Nov. 7, 2009—before a New York college audience, his passionate yet logical responses brought usually laid-back students to their feet with a standing ovation.)

Cruz then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review and founding editor of the Latino Law Review. He headed to Washington and worked for William Rehnquist, the first Hispanic to clerk for a chief justice of the United States. Soon Cruz was on lists like Newsweek's "20 Young Hispanic Americans on the Rise" (1999).

After some time advising George W. Bush, Cruz in 2003 became solicitor general of Texas, the youngest in the nation. He authored 70 briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and argued before it eight times. He won cases defending a Ten Commandments monument on the Texas State Capitol grounds, defending recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools, and defending the State of Texas against attempts by the World Court to re-open the convictions of 51 murderers on death row.

In the process he made more lists, such as the National Law Journal's "50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America." His office has a statue of Ronald Reagan and a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. He's a member of Lake Hills Church in Austin. He married a lovely investment banker who had also gone to Harvard and worked for Bush. Ted and Heidi Cruz now have a 1-year-old daughter. His favorite movie is The Princess Bride. (If you haven't seen it, rent it.)

Many hurdles remain for Cruz: the attorney general contest next year, a potential run for governor four years later, plus all the exigencies of life that no one can anticipate. Other good candidates will emerge. But if Republican leaders are smart (and they often are not), they'll be looking not for a living legend but for someone like Cruz.

One thing seldom mentioned
is a Candidate's need of a thorough knowledge of history. Not only the history of the U.S., but a good knowledge of world history.

I was always amazed whenever Ronald Reagan made a case for anything, he would refer to some point in history with a roster of factual information. They say hind sight is 20/20. When you can demonstrate that a particular idea has failed historically, or succeeded historically, it makes a big impact on people. I don't mean just general information like saying socialism is a historically failed system, but I mean providing people with statistics, numbers, dates, geography and names.

Sometimes I would listen to Reagan and think, how on earth does he remember all that stuff? The man was like a walking encyclopedia of historical data. I have not heard anyone in the political body of the United States today who has that talent.

Article II Section I
stipulates that a President MUST be a Natural Born Citizen..that's person who had TWO (2) Parent (s) who are/were Citizen (s)..so as good as this Cruz may be, he cannot under the law be POTUS.
It's bad enough that the DNC knows the truth, Pelosi signed off anyway that Obama is NOT
a Natural Born Citizen. If he was born in HI
at all he'd be at best a Native born citizen but he's admitted that he was a British subject/Kenyan citizen under his fathers status
til age 21 when the Kenyan law required he renew in his own right..he let it lapse. He
also affirmed the Constitutional criteria (which is a testimony to his over weening arrogance) by co sponsoring and voting for the McCain resolution on April 8, 2008. But the political and moral cowards who could demand he answer the questions that have arisen are cowering under their desks whenever this issue is brought up, and judges who should up hold the law are either bought off or threatened.
He's spent 1.7 million to keep the questions at bay..WHY?
We cannot make exceptions, either we are for the Constitution as originally written or we hold it in contempt as Obama and the criminal DemonRAT cabal (with silent assent from the GOP and media and our own conservative pundits..Ann Coulter for one).

OBAMA'S & THEIR SHOCKING ACADEMICS
YOU MAY BE SHOCKED TO LEARN...

Barack achieved but a 2.7 GPA in high school (SAT's = 1027) followed by a 2.6GPA at Columbia and after (somehow) getting into Harvard, then accomplished (affirmatively) little in their Law School.

Michelle did even worse on all counts...

Both are at near the level of Michael Moore...

All three are major con-artists who have (as did the Clint-Stones) conned America for years...

Spear the RINOs
The fact that "fiscal" conservatives, or what we actual conservatives call actual conservatives, trash Huckabee's economic views ought to tell you exactly what kind of "conservative" he is: A RINO. Huckabee has openly denounced, in writing, the economic freedom wing of the Party. What else do you need to know? Huckabee is an idiot and a phony conservative, which would make anyone who thinks he is smart and a real conservative a total idiot.

There will be no uniting of "fiscal" and social conservatives, nor does there need to be. There is a misunderstanding of what a social conservative is. Social conservatives, who are now an irrelevant minority, are opposed on principle to liberty, including economic liberty. They are simply evasive about their real beliefs. They claim they support freedom. They do not. They want the government to have the final say-so over human lives, and they will tell you this if you ask them the appropriate questions. If abortion coverage ever got dropped from the health reform, you can bet your last dollar that social conservatives would drop their opposition to it and eventually line up behind it when their religious leaders told them to. They are no d*mn good. They merely would loosen the chains a little more than your typical liberal. The Huckster is really bad about camouflaging himself and weasel-wording about his beliefs.

I don't know who it will be in 2012, but it won't be the Huckster or any other big government/neocon/compassion con type. If by some fluke they get the nomination, they won't get the election. I would rather have Turdmuffin in office for four more years than some psycho socon nut job who will sign away my freedoms under the guise of do-gooding for "America" while they lull conservatives back to sleep again like Bush did. I mean it. Nobody but nobody mistakes Turdmuffin for a freedom lover, which, in the final analysis, is the most important thing about his Presidency.

AMERICA LAYS A GOLDEN EGG (FERGUSON)

For those wanting to review a thorough analysis of America's recent financial meltdown and its causes... read AMERICA LAYS A GOLDEN EGG written a few months ago by Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson. Go to Harvard's website and look up his name.

Professor Ferguson has written many papers over the past months and years which are cataloged on his website. They are on a broad range of social, economic and world subjects.

I encourage everyone blogging on TH to first read Ferguson's learned papers before making a fool of themselves.

Professor Ferguson teaches history and also economics at the Harvard Business School. His views are well researched.

Another professor (this time of Yale) whose writings are also well worth reading are those of AMY CHUA. She recently wrote on the subject of America being an Ultra-Power... that is fading fast.

Cruz
This guy has the same problem as Obama, he wasn 't born in the USA, as a Democrat he would be given a pass, as a Republican, forget it.

Honestly
There is no hope for the GOP in 2012. The country as a whole will reject a far right teabagger approved conservative. The far right teabaggers won't accept a RINO. Prepare to lose, yet again.

Ron Paul was the man
too bad the neo-cons exhiled him for telling the truth about 9/11 and Iraq.

You guys are crazy.

Cruz control
He sounds great and promising, but 2020 is too dangerously far for planning-----Marco Rubio feom Florida with very similiar credentials in 2012 has been on my mind big time.

Olasky
Unlike you, Cruz is able to identify the enemy as an enemy and sever all ties. Your assumption that the president is at center reveals either stupidity or willful blindness. And no, I don't need Huckster to rob from the "rich" and give to the poor as a show of "christianity"
BTW, there was more than just an "eyebrows worth of difference" between Dole and clinton and clinton proved it.

I like the thesis
I might point out that at least once, we Republicans got it right by nominating a living legend. Reagan was the oldest President to serve, and perhaps we just hope to find someone that comes close. I like Huckaby's tv show, but, he doesn't impress me as a Presidential Candidate. I'm not sure who does right now. I'd love to see someone burst on the scene that inspires the nation to do for itself.

"Achievements" & ID Politics
Bear in mind the NATURE as well as the long career aspect of Dole's & McCain's "Lifetime Achievement Awards." Both specialized in "reaching across the aisle" to further Dem big-gov agendas that otherwise could have been stopped dead cold. At least Dole relinquished his Senate seat to campaign*, then went out to pasture after losing a race v. Waco Willie we desparately needed to win. Mack, OtoH, is still using up Senate GOP oxygen & skulking around the GOP plotting more of his insanity.

(* What was up with that, BTW? The Dems in '96 demanded that for some reason Dole was obliged to resign if he ran for PotUS. But that didn't seem to apply to Kerry, McCain, or Obama later! Another 1-shot disposable principle?)

Cruz sounds attractive, but don't try to play the "identity politics" game v. the Dems; it's rigged in their favor. Remember Estrada? Clarence Thomas' confirmation? The action line says a black, Hispanic, woman, etc, who isn't a flaming leftist Dem isn't "authentic" & doesn't count. Cubans, esp children of Castro foes, are especially disqualified. Then again, don't play ID politics at all; it's 1 of the bogus & wrong things we need to oppose.

Marvin and Richard,
I agree that Gov. Huckabee "comes the closest". I question why "fiscal conservatives trash his economic views." Isn't the FairTax a "fiscally conservative" view? Gov. Huckabee also came out against the bailouts, including TARP when some so called "fiscal conservatives" didn't.

"Huckabee cannot win a national election, he's unelectable, unpalatable to independents and moderate Democrats, period" Didn't he poll slightly better than Romney among Independents and Dems in the PPP poll?

Thank you Marvin
This story is just another reason why Townhall is sooooooooooo gooooooooood! You got me interested in this candidate and I went to your article/interview with him and I will now to follow Cruz's political career to see where he takes it. He seems to be the right candidate to get the message out to other Republicans that the Hispanic community tends to be mostly conservative, family-oriented, hard working, faith-based and patriotic and doesn't, for the most part want a nanny-state, government cheese handout from their country. They want what all of us want - a unique country where anyone can come and carve a niche out for themselves. They want all of the freedoms that countless others have fought and died for. They will also fight and die for this country so it will remain the beacon of freedom it has always been despite what the loony MSM/leftist broadcast that it is. Once again, great aricle Marvin.

Paul Ryan is not ready YET
But if he wants to become that, in several years, and works at it ... he can do it. I know him better than the others because of proximity.

I like the Romney/Pawlenty combination in 2012, and if it doesn't carry the day (in other words, if the country is not ready for a major shift and reelects Obama), then in 2016 it could be Pawlenty/Ryan.

By that time we will see if an unknown (now) like Cruz is ready, and maybe it is Ryan/Cruz in 2016 instead. Or Pawlenty/Cruz. These are palatable and potentially attractive pairings.

Jindahl really hurt himself in the "opposition" address he gave on national TV. It was painful to watch. Not as bad as Pelosi in that same kind of role a few years before, but a big let down anyway.

Gen Petrausus???
Gen Pet??

The Fairness Doctrine
I always remind myself that I need to be less ummmm forthright and more understanding of other view points.

I am trying very hard.

To Marvin Olasky I will acknowledge my faults and, in faireness, say this:

Bring forth every Princeton, Harvard, or University of Phoenix debater who is married to either an investment banker, mortgage broker, or cash for checks business owner.

Line them up, wet their hair, put makeup on them, and then simply let them stand in front of General's Washington, Greene, Grant, Sheridan, Patton, McArthur, Marshall, Halsey, Churchill and ....wait i'm thinking....oh yes....Custer....Love that General....ummm to simply asnswer questions about duty to God and Country.

My Recomendation
To Marvin Olasky I just say that we do not need a Princeton educated debater who is married to an investment banker. We need a Washington, Eisonhower, and Patton. I might add a Winston Churchill would help to.

Find me a man who will fight. Dont show me a man so educated that he ponders fairness over winning.

My Candidate Will of His Own Honor:
That candidate will understand what the Generals already know; their authority does not reside in a Presidents demands.

General Officer's authority resides in an oath, they willingly and freely gave, to protect not the President, but to protect the Constitution from any enemy foreign or domestic.

My Candidate
Will look into history and into the eyes of Eisenhower, Patton, and George Washington to imagine the General's responses to this statement by any politician, including the President while soldiers are in the field:

This war cannot be won.

My Ideal Candidate
Someone who understands the lessons of world history

Someone who understands that this country stands on the abyss

Someone who needs to understand that people like me could care less about Princeton, pedigree or a candidate being married to an investment banker

Someone who understands how to keep a nation together while at war, and who knows how to win at war

Someone who will not sacrifice their values to get along with political foes

Someone who believes that it is not a bad thing to win at war. They must understand that today most feel it sets a bad example to the world when you win at any war. People feel it encourages more war.

Someone who understands that the United Nations does not encourage, and frowns upon any western nation winning at war.

Someone who understands that the enemies of the United States see that precedent clearly, laugh, and know they can win with 100 men to your 1 million.

Someone who understands that our allies will not commit soldiers in any number of consequence because they do not want to be a part of any sucessfull war.

Someone who understands that our allies want us to fight for them.

Finally...someone who understands that if we are no longer willing to fight to win, like our allies, that person will ask the question 'If we will not fight then who will?'

b2slim
"Who is this " NOT NATURAL BORN CITIZEN YOU WANT TO RUN FOR POTUS IN 2012!" I give up, b2. Who is it? Every person I named in my list is a natural born American citizen according to the laws of the United States of America.

Perry is an interesting choice
But the first person that say something intelligent like "I believe in this, but that is a states right so nationally I will do what the constitution tells me I can do." That is my candidate. Feel free to be a trannie, a criminal, or even Nancy Pelosi. You'll have my vote.

Slating the argument like that takes away any crazy counter-argument. They'll try, but they'll be destroy because the last thing the crazies want to bring up is the constitution or the founding fathers. 99% of the GOP is against it and 100% of the Democrats are against.

Richard
I can't be Mitt he has MA healthcare wrapped around his neck. I don't know how he will explain that away.

Paul Ryan, I believe is still a little to young. Democrats can get away with being young and actually need someone with no record of their crazy. Only people under 45 can get elected in their party. Conservatives have to have a proven record.

Pawlenty has a shot.

General Petrausus is still an interesting pick.

OLASKY hint

WE already have a WORLD TALK STAR in the WH

we need "experience" no more crybabies in the WH.

NO more perpetual party boys in the WH

NO more communists, corrupt criminals in the WH

NO MORE TALK, Talk, Talk, Talk, talkers

Mitt ROMNEY needs to grow fangs

Romney the "TURN AROUND" guy would be awesome and the best for this nation:

HOWEVER: he does not have the FANGS needed.

Besides he would need to learn how to control the debate, the interview;

MESSAGE TO MITT ROMNEY, or ? the answer always is:

THE ONLY ANSWER FOR ANY CANDIDATE about the personal tabloid garbage dump is:

OH giggle “you know how the campaign of personal destruction is played by the vultures, the hate peddlers, the deranged, the liars and I am not in their game!

And if your conversation is not about the issues and what is right for the legal citizens of this country, how to turn it around and bring back its greatness, this interview is O V E R!

Finally - somebody says it well!
Cruz sounds like an amazing guy. The GOP needs to stop being the party of old white men, and Cruz and others like him could be exactly what they need.

Also, the future candidates won't be defined by who gets the hispanic or black vote, but rather who gets the conservative or liberal vote. As america changes in demographics the minorities will soon make a combined majority with multiple bi-racial people to make it more complicated.

What will become the fight for the future will be americans who decide to vote for conservative candidates i.e. socially and fiscally. These two things make america great i.e. strong families and a low defecit without much borrowing to fund the current spending.

The candidates who get this message will win the hearts of ALL americans - remember minorities will become the majority in another 15 years. Being Hispanic or Black or Woman won't be good enough - a candidate must articulate a policy view that is either conservative or liberal.

Pawlenty or Perry have fangs

and neither is afraid to use them

neither has a personal or professional garbage dump in their lives.

Possibly GOV PERRY and REP Michele Bachmann

they all have spine and not afraid to kick butt, name names and have the experience, the savy and experience

The future could be

Pawlenty, with a spine, and incredible experience. zero personal garbaged dump in his personal and professional life

YOU NEED TO EDUCATE yourself,

and or Michele Bachmann, congressman with a spine,

she is brilliant
she does not do stupid like palin did
she has instinct.
zero garbage dump in her personal life and professional life
she controls the message

Who is this " NOT NATURAL BORN CITIZEN YOU WANT TO RUN FOR POTUS IN 2012!

WE already have an illegal in the WH, the corrupt criminal fraud,

Well
All that is good, but the paradigm has changed, you know?

The Republican leaders (read that as eltists and left-leaning moderates)are not likely to be involved in a big way for the foresee-able future. Actually, their actions in Florida and New York-23 are pretty well shining the light on their "leadership."

I will guarantee you right now that I will never again vote a Republican straight ticket. In order to receive a vote from me, each candidate will have to satisfy me that they will not only vote for, but also fight for, true conservative values. Their total allegiance to, and willingness to fight for, the Constitution will be the only test of their worthiness for me. If you can't pass that test, don't bother to knock on my door! I will not be in.

So, how does he feel about: kicking illegal immigrants back into Mexico? Identifying and prosecuting the traitors and grafters in Washington and elsewhere? Repealing the onerous tax code and replacing it with a mangeable structure? Reducing Government control over every aspect of our lives? Installing term limits on legislators and developing some measure of accountibility for federal judges at all levels? Protection for individual property rights?

There are a lot more, but you do understand that a return to the COnstitution will necessarily take care of most of them, don't you?

Yo, Marv, get a grip
Do you HONESTLY believe that millions and millions of conservatives, Republicans and/or independents are really going cast a vote for someone -- anyone -- that they have never heard of? And please -- do we not have enough untried lack of experience in the WH already.

Huckabee is a bomb. He will fail. So will Sarah. So will Mitt. Pawlenty has a running shot and Jindal, IMO, should take the nomination hands down. I also like to watch Rep. Paul Ryan from Wisconsin who is one awfully smart fiscal conserative.

But MOST IMPORTANT? Someone who can woop Barack's hide. That's what is need. Anyone who can send him scurrying out of town -- is my candidate.

unelectable
Huckabee cannot win a national election, he's unelectable, unpalatable to independents and moderate Democrats, period

Romney is the best choice right now but he needs to demonstrate sincerity, and there are others with potential

Republican Leadership
Cruz, Palin, Jindal, Huckabee, Bachmann. . . sounds like we have some actual choices here. Let's not do the Dems a favor by a dogfight that undermines our own candidates before they face the Democratic challenger. I agree 100% with none of them. If I wanted the ideologically perfect candidate, it would be me or my brother, and I'm not too sure about my brother. Barring that, any of these people will do nicely.
