Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

On my desk is a book of the hundred greatest political speeches in American history. I am always struck by how harsh they were. The speeches were rough-and-tumble and politically incorrect by today’s standards.

In those days, candidates could react to criticism and tailor their speeches to the audience. If a speech was reprinted in a newspaper, it would take weeks to publish and even longer for the words to be picked up across the country. In addition, newspapers acted autonomously and had very little interaction or accountability for what they wrote.

Until recently, America had a large and robust variety of newspapers and other printed media, but a smaller amount of broadcast availability due to limited frequencies. The Fairness Doctrine came about during the age of Communism and argued that since the airwaves were limited, there should be balance or “fairness” in the points of view that were presented. It applied only to radio and while in place, radio stations avoided controversial topics altogether in order to avoid any problems with the FCC.

In 1984, due to new technologies, the Supreme Court decided the scarcity argument no longer applied and lifted the Fairness Doctrine. And that was before the Internet allowed for limitless voices. There wasn’t much resistance at the time, because radio was thought to be old media.

The end of the Doctrine allowed the explosion of talk radio, saved AM radio and created thousands of new jobs in the broadcast industry. It was one man, Rush Limbaugh, who at the time showed ailing Top 40 AM radio stations they could flourish and be profitable as news/talk stations. Since then, the left has hated the power of talk radio and has made noises recently that they want a return of the Fairness Doctrine. If that happens, talk radio as we know it will cease to exist.

It’s not enough that liberals control all the major TV news bureaus and most newspapers. They want to control the one free-market component of broadcasting in America: the radio airwaves.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) has been one of the leaders in the movement to repeal the Fairness Doctrine permanently. For the last several weeks, he has partnered with talk radio hosts from across the country, members of Congress and media watchdogs to encourage the House of Representatives to sign a discharge petition that would call for an up or down vote on H. R. 2905, the Broadcaster Freedom Act.

The do-nothing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said last week that she supports reviving the Fairness Doctrine. At a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, John Gizzi of Human Events asked Pelosi if she would allow the Pence Broadcaster Freedom Act to come to the floor without a discharge petition, and she said no. When pressed further on whether she would allow the Act to repeal the Fairness Doctrine permanently, Pelosi said, “No … the interest in my caucus is the reverse.”

The Pelosi Way is to limit competition and free trade. Whether it’s bringing up a vote on free trade with Colombia or protecting speech with the Broadcaster Freedom Act, Nancy doesn’t get it.

The marketplace doesn’t want liberal talk radio. There have been some shows that have done well, but the numbers are not in their favor. This year at the Talkers New Media Seminar, there were more liberal/progressive/independent hosts represented, but the bread and butter still goes to conservative talk because conservatives are so under-represented in the rest of the media market.

Liberals know they can’t win on this issue in a free market, so they want to regulate conservative talk radio out of existence. Their answer to competition is to make the playing field uneven. If advertisers weren’t buying time on Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Martha Zoller, we wouldn’t be around.

Over the next few weeks, Congress will be out of session more than they will be in session. This is the opportunity for you, the voter, to let them know how you feel about this issue. Let them know you want to end the Fairness Doctrine permanently by demanding the Broadcaster Freedom Act be brought to the floor and given an up or down vote. We must protect the free market everywhere it is being assaulted, and talk radio is a free speech market that should be left alone by regulation.

About The Author
Martha Zoller is a political analyst and conservative talk show host for WDUN AM 550 in Gainesville, Ga.
Pelosi Way
The female Pelosi is only doing what her other half tells her to do. They believe they can run America from their California patio. They, of course, are running competition with the Wall Street Want-a-be Presidents which are fantisizing the film "Rollerball". That is George Soros and groupees that include the Clinton Followers. They emulate the former "Robber Barons" of earlier America. Want to stop them in their tracks? Establish the Service Draft again and include the females for "Women Equality". They'll scatter like a covey of quail with a fox in chase. Criminals, white and blue collar, only make good cowards. Real Freedom is provided by Patriots. Pelosi is a politician, never a Statesperson. She will only be happy with "her" and "his" power conrtrol.

If Congress
wants to play this weasely, deceitful game, let them take it all the way. There must be an equal number of members in congress representing all political parties. Its the only way to be fair.

No more worries about gainging or losing seats. Sorry, some of you are going to have to go. There are too many D's and R's. Not enough pink & pinko seats. Too many green on both sides of the aisle.

Scootch over Teddy, we need to make room for the rainbow party, which incidentally, could make use of your staff.

Congress
Is there ANYTHING at all you don't already have your hands into? Is this finally the last freedom we have?

It is so very much time that the grownups took the traitors of freedom and kicked them out of congress. Yes, I am advocating the people utilize their right to disband the gov't. It has overreached its authority in every facet of our lives. Even though the Bill of Rights gives us the authority to disband the gov't you know full well that a post such as this could get me thrown in jail. It doesn't matter that no law was broken.

You know it and I know it.

Fairness
There is no possible way to enforce such a doctrine and an endless opportunity for lawsuits. No wonder a congress full of lawyers loves the idea.

This is so obviously unconstitutional a 3rd grader should know it. The very idea that members of congress would consider it is treasonous to freedom. Controlling what is said, criminalizing free speech, reprehensible as usual.

Blithering baboons could do a better job.

Talk Radio
Liberals want to control NOT ONLY the one free-market component of broadcasting in America: the radio airwaves, but freedom of thought. If they are successful in forcing the return of the UNfairness Doctrine, they will have eliminated yet another of our freedoms. They will not be satisfied until they can successfully control all that we see, hear, read AND think. And, you can be assured that all of this will be according the the liberal, ANTI-AMERICAN perspective.

The communists who controlled the Soviet Union for decades have nothing on the left wing extremists in the US today.

Brickhouse he has you fooled
I can without any help listen to talk radio in my car.Limbaugh heavily screens his calls and can use a dump button to cut off or edit what a caller says.I know I got on his show in 97 and called him a coward and a liar. The show was replayed later in the day and all critical comments were cut out.He bashes people all the time and never says I DARE this person to come on the air with me.He's an uneduacted disc jockey. If he let critical calls on you would hear a lot of drug, viagra, and draft dodging jokes. And ESPN fired him for a racist remark.

this political debacle
Seems to me, alot of us have done our homework, and 'get it"! And then, there's the rest of the un-informed or ignorant public, that has a vote. Clueless as to what's REALLY going on. Scary!

TexasUpChuck:
Obviously you don't ever listen to talk radio. Your comment shows how you know absolutely NOTHING about talk radio. Stupid people like you call Rush all the time and TRY to make a logical point, none ever do.

We laugh at the stupid things liberals and socialist politicians and reporters say and do. Rush plays their own words, and provides links to all the articles he comments on. The truth hurts, that's why Democrats call them "smears" or "personal attacks." Ever wonder why NOBODY has ever sued Rush for liable? If Rush is so inconsequential, why would the Congress of the USA try to shut him down? Chuck, you're following the pied-piper off the cliff; go ahead though, that's your right as an American.

You should go to his website and see that everything I've just written is the truth, just like the articles Rush reads are printed by the newspapers themselves or speeches dirty politicians made in their own stupid words played for us to laugh at.

Expect More Congressional Seats
The Democrats are expecting to gain more Congressional seats in November. After the job they've done since 2006, they actually think we want more Democrats in Congress. Pelosi should be sent back to California as the traitor she is. Same thing with Harry Reid. This Congress has been blatant in their disregard for ethics and duty to the nation. Pajama parties? Back room deals with amnesty, including SCHIP. Holding up the War Funding Bill, after loading it with crap and fat.

America doesn't deserve these people; she deserves the finest people available. Here we have anti-Americans sitting in the halls of Congress!

Forget the Fairness Doctrine.
With fecal brains like Limbaugh,Hannity,Savage and the rest of the rightwing blowhards all a Democrat has to do is say listen to these imbeciles for 10 minutes they have no idea how to actually do anything other than shout nonsense between commwecials.Consevative talk radio is one step below internet porn.Go ahead keep these morons talking.

On The Media and Other Things
The surest sign that Obama will win in November is Rush Limbaugh's $400 million contract until 2016.

The big players know that 2008 will be the most crushing defeat of any party - the GOP - in the history of American electoral politics and that conservatives will need a place to go for consulation. This is why Limbaugh's contract lasts until 2016 when Obama will leave office.

The money is not stupid. All of us can debate, dialogue and argue amongst ourselves, but the big money only bets on sure things.

Rush's ratings will sky rocket. His listenership will double as downtrodden conservatives look for some sign of sanity in the insane world that's coming upon us.

The fairness doctrine will be the biggest event in broadcast media and we'll all be asked to enslist in Rush's army to forestall it. Such drama.

In the end, though, we will have the fairness doctrine. There won't be a single GOP above pay grad GS 9 after 2010 and this legislation will sail through the legislative process as will national health care, open borders, high taxes, surrender in Iraq and gun confiscation, regardelss of DC vs. Heller.

The left ignores laws. The right obeys them, regardless. The GOP goes further and bends over to take it again and again.

Good luck everyone.

45: Now THERE'S and interesting

notion....

I know this "Fairness Doctrine" as the libs have it written, includes the internet, and the grass roots sites (including TH) as well.

I'm going to have to keep track of it a little more closely and see if it will ultimately include the "print media."

The idea of the NYSlime having to adhere to "equal space" to the Conservative side just makes me laugh... out loud! :-)

The Dictatorship of the Proletariat
I'm Sure that Karl Marx is Cavorting in his Grave. "The Peoples Democratic Party of Amerika", is taking over the United States Gov't, without firing a Shot. [As Uncle Nikita Kruschev said they would.] The First step in taking over, is to Control the Media/Press, [which they have already done], and then SILENCE the Opposition, which is in the Works, [the (Un)-"Fairness Doctrine." I'm quite sure that Nancy Pelosivich, Harry Reidisky, Chucky Schuminsky and the rest of the Democratic[Commie/Socialist] Party of the U.S.A. will succeed, where Joe Stalin and the Boys from the Kremlin failed. I haven't heard Anything of/from the "regular" American Communist Party, lately, in the news, such as -- Who is their Presidential candidate, I guess with the competition from the Democrats, pushing the same Agenda,-- What's the Point?? I don't suppose that there would be too much difference between "Shiek Barrack the Magnificent's" ['Grand Mufti of Chicago', (and, soon to be)The 'Ayatollah of America'] brand of Socialism, and the Old School Marxists!! After all, they were his Mentors!!

Fairness in Newspapers
About twenty years ago when Israel and Lebanon were shooting at each other, the Arkansas Gazette paper announced that it was going to be totally impartial and would report the news that way about that war. One day the paper would report from the Israeli side and the next from the Lebanon side. They did. HOWEVER, the picture on the front page said it all. They would show the Israelis shooting artillery or tanks; they should show the Lebanese in hospitals and helping children cross streets during shelling. They never showed anything bad about the Lebanese; they never showed anything good about Israel.

One report was interesting, though. The reporter stated that the terrorist groups were more interested in killing people than in fighting. He stated that their idea of a battle was to get into a jeep and drive up and down the streets on their own side of the line shooting at people they saw where the enemy WAS NOT. They didn't want anyone to shoot back.

Things haven't changed much.

Martha, Excellent column...

I trust you're going to be a regular TH contributor.

Allen: How right you are...

Leaves one almost speechless, doesn't it???

I have YET to find one issue on which they are Constitutionally sound.

And certainly, Marxist Obama is headed straight down that road to Socialism and Marxism... and those who think he's going to "Change" things, have no clue just what he's going to change.

They claim Bush is a faciest
Yet their side created "hate speech". Which notably burning the flag is not.

The Congress does not act on issues like abortion and marriage because of political sensitivities which gives opening for the courts.

Maxine Waters has already stated she wants the oil companies nationalized.

FOWG: "Oh YES SHE DOES!" was the first

thing that came to my mind as well. :-)

And let's not forget little ol' Dennis Kucinich, who is so excited he's shaking about the "Fairness Doctrine."

Right after he gets Pres. Bush impeached, that is.

Functional Equivilent
Talk radio as we currently know it is the modern day version of the old soap box in the park. In past times people could gather at the public park and talk about anything they wanted to anyone who would listen. They didn't have to share their soap boxes. If you didn't agree you got your own soap box and the debate started.

Pelosi and the other socialists/marxists in congress want to make you share your soap box with whoever disagrees with you. Not really American, is it?

whiny bichets male and female
decided to force myself to read a large number of democrats thoughts and ideas-if that wont upset your stomach nothing will-bitchy,shrill,whiny,complaining-girls girls get a grip-as frank would say your just a bunch of nancy's

Pelosi rules with iron
She will not let anything come to the floor if she thinks it might pass and she doesn't like it. So essentially she has allowed nothing to be done in the house. On the other hand by keeping things locked she has not let any legislation dirty her floors.

my 2 cents
follow the money

I don't listen to radio of that sort in any case

The word "fairness"
Fairness sounds like a good idea, but they only talk about fairness of radio. What about newspapers and TV news, would fairness be applied their. I think not, it is already in the tank with the likes of Pelosi.

Air America with their ace in the hole Al Franken was going to be the savior for the Left Leaning Liberals. Air time is expensive, especially when the show is popular. Air America bought their own time, and still they couldn't get a listening base. Air America went bust, so here comes Mizz Pelosi to the rescuse.

Sounds to me a little like Hugho Chavez, or even Maxine Walters!

riesc
You can download them here. The problem??? They are almost totally slanted towards liberals or liberal thought.

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/top100speechesall.html

To riesc re: 100 Best Speeches
I don't know the name of any such book, but I'm betting when you find it, that "throw granny under the bus" speech by BHO won't be in it.

Go Martha!
I lived in Gainesville, GA for nine years and I miss listening to Martha Zoller. She's an amazing lady and I'm glad to see her on Townhall. Hope to see more!

The book of speeches
Does anyone know the name of the book with the hundred best speeches in it?

Political News Media Are Communistic
If you are old enough to remember the old USSR, you can understand how politically motivated news should not be tolerated in a free society.

The Government owned news media of the old USSR were only allowed to report news to help the Communists..I believe that willing politically motivated news medias are worse than the old USSR. They conspire to manipulate the news to benefit the Democrats..

Yepper
Rupert Murdoch, a prominent supporter of Hillary Clinton, owns Fox News; Chris Wallace, a Democrat, superintends its Sunday panel program; Bill O'Reilly, who's something like a holdover Scoop Jackson Dem, is its best-known personage. It looks conservative in comparison with PBS and the Big Three because it doesn't slavishly follow the _New York Times_-DNC playbook. The hard Left, of course, can't stand even this mild dissent. I'm sure that Pelosi and company would shut the network down if it could.

And it continues to this day.
The TV networks, including Fox, are liberal and the News show are overwhelmingly liberal, except for Fox News which is center-left. Oh they have a few token neo-cons who support Bush and McLame, but by definition, those are liberal as well.

Vic
Good point. Now we rarely get even that much. Oh, George Will still toils away gamely on ABC, and now and then Bill Maher brings out Tony Snow or somebody with equally thick skin to take juvenile abuse from a panel of experts, e.g., the former guitarist for Steely Dan. But that's about it.

Lefties like George Stephanopoulos get their own shows, make their own agendas, dictate the terms of the discussion, cherry-pick reports and features from other Lefties, and offer themselves as unbiased seekers of truth. Actual or reputed conservatives appear, if at all, only in debate-like formats, set against (and usually outnumbered by) more Lefties. That's also the rule on college campuses: Louis Farrakan may speak on his own. Phyllis Schlafly must stay away unless she debates Gloria Steinem, and even then hooligans are likely disconnect Schlafly's mic while campus cops yawn.

Interesting, isn't it, that TV producers often try to balance Bill Kristol, for example, with someone from NPR or a major newspaper or magazine? If those outlets are as impartial as they've been made out, how could their most distinguished representatives adequately offset known Righties? You'd need Lefties for that task, no? But I digress again.

Paleocon
My problem with the old shows that paraded out their token "conservative" was what they considered a conservative.

Vic
You're right. Congress _could_ impose the "Fairness Doctrine," as it tried to do in '87 and '91. So could an FCC packed with Democrats. But it seems likelier that the next president will reinstate it by executive order. Both McCain and Obama display appalling ignorance of, and disregard for, the First Amendment.

One wonders whether the courts will limit application of FD II to radio -- and whether NPR will remain inexplicably exempt. But I digress.

Whatever happens at the polls, we're headed back to the days when incumbents had little to fear, when radio was little more than a public juke box, when Lefties allowed others get a word in only on _Firing Line_ and during the "Point-Counterpoint" segment of _60 Minutes_. Things will be even worse than before, however. The McCain-Feingold Incumbent Protection Act has criminalized political speech explicitly protected by the Constitution. William F. Buckley is gone, and most media outlets no longer bother with token conservatives. And Clinton-era innovations make any rabble-rouser who opposes, say, a federal housing project, subject to prosecution for hate crimes. I can hardly wait.

Not completely accurate
This column is not exactly accurate. The Supreme Court actually upheld the Fairness Doctrine and the Reagan Admin had more to do with its elimination than SCOTUS. The 1984 case that everyone references for eliminating the fairness doctrine dealt with an act of congress establishing public broadcasting and a provision that prohibited “editorializing” FCC v. League of Women Voters of California).

Townhall actually had much more thorough history of the FD here:

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/StuartEpperson/2007/08/2 3/the_fairness_doctrine_a_brief_history_and__perspective?pa ge=full&comments=true

http://supreme.justia.com/us/468/364/case.html

What is really interesting is that the Commiecrats have tried to bring this regulation back several times and have a bill working in the House now. Conservatives should remember that the original doctrine was NOT an act of congress but was a simply regulatory rule which was removed by executive fiat. It could be reinstated by simple executive fiat once again.

Oh, Pelosi cares alright...
Pelosi definitely cares; in fact as far as she's concerned we can all eat cake...

To 'LastLaugh' . . .
. . . Pelosi is also the Mussolini of our time.

Actually, not only doesn't she get it, she couldn't care less.

Democrats as Dictators
Pelosi is a basically a 'Stalinist', as are her 'compatriots' in Congress. They really don't believe in 'Free Speech' or democracy - POWER is all they crave.

A largely truthfil column.....
"The Pelosi Way is to limit competition and free trade. Whether it’s bringing up a vote on free trade with Colombia or protecting speech with the Broadcaster Freedom Act, Nancy doesn’t get it."

YES, SHE DOES!!!
