Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Here's the truth -- the simple truth: We are facing an economic calamity, and nobody really knows for sure what to do about it.

Heaven knows what do, but Harvard surely doesn't.

Republicans don't know. Democrats don't know. President Obama doesn't know for sure what to do to avert economic collapse. Hemorrhaging job losses and devaluations of everyone's home, portfolios and pension plans will continue to occur if private investors cannot trust anyone but the government with their money.

Let's admit it: This whole stimulus thing is just a guess -- the best guess our best and brightest can come up with. Use government to force consumer spending that will prevent a severe contraction and restore investor confidence and a normally functioning economy. Well, it's a theory; it's a shot.

Privately, the best and the brightest admit that if it works, this stimulus strategy will likely cause hyperinflation down the road. Running $2 trillion to $3 trillion deficits annually will do that. But hyperinflation, they whisper, is better than the alternative: another Great Depression.

So we have to do something. Unless confidence is restored, eventually, even the U.S. government (which produces no wealth but depends on the private economy for its spending) will run out of money, and investors will stop funding our deficits by buying U.S. Treasury bills.

Our modern sophisticated economy runs on trust. So does our political system.

In times of crisis, Americans rally behind our president. The latest Gallup Poll shows that 64 percent of Americans say they approve of the job President Obama is doing, far more than voted for him.

Keeping the trust of the American people in the difficult times ahead will be critical to President Obama and to our nation. The presidency consists mostly of words. As President Bush found, once you lose the trust of the American people, you're finished as an effective leader, because nothing you say matters.

Here's the best advice I can give this president, for whom I did not vote but who is my president now: Waste this crisis.

Do not misuse it. Do not spin it. Do not give off even the faintest whiff of appearing to use this economic crisis to gain votes for some other end, any other end, no matter how worthy that end seems to you and to your advisers.

The House Democrats' stimulus package is a disaster because it is a lie. How can a bill that spends most of the money in 2010 and many years beyond be a stimulus package for an economy collapsing now? The Senate version is only marginally better -- it promises to spend about three-fourths of the money it borrows from the American people by October 2010. But this is still an unacceptable gap between the alleged purpose and the reality.

Hidden in both bills are very large paybacks to political interest groups -- another clear disaster.

"I see multiple motivations in this bill, based on the language," Brett Glass, founder of Lariat.net, an Internet service provider in Wyoming, told The New York Times. "I do see a motivation to stimulate the economy. I think that's a good thing. I also see a motivation to hand out money to certain large corporations that are very good at lobbying." And Glass is speaking only of the $9 billion to expand rural Internet access -- sometime around 2013.

If this is a stimulus package, be rigorous. Keep in the stimulus bill all the spending on construction and other reasonable projects that can be spent by the government in 2009. Take the remaining money and give a check to every man, woman and child in the form of a debit card that can be spent anywhere a consumer chooses between now and Dec. 31, 2009.

Make your actions match your words, President Obama, so we can trust you.

Waste this crisis, Mr. President. Please.

Naaah,DON'T WASTE THIS CRISIS

Give it (bend over America) to the people. They wanted the Moonbat Messiah for his promises.Choices have consequences & it's time for the majority party (shaddup RINO's) to deliver on them.

Waste this crisis
Unfortunately, I believe Obama, Pelosi and Reid are using this crisis to push forth social programs and paybacks. Instead of Obama going out day after day and telling us how terrible things are and how they are going to get worse if we don't pass his Stimulus he should be trying to calm our fears. He should be carving out all of the pork, as he promised, and tell the nation that he will not spend any money on anything that will not help get this country back to financial stability. People are losing confidence in this President in a hurry. Obama, Pelosi and Reid are going to find out quickly is that the American people are not stupid. They are well aware that spending hundreds of millions of dollars for Hollywood producers, condoms, STD brochures and the like are not going to get them jobs, put food on their tables or help them pay their mortgages.

Ms. Gallagher misses the point.
Democrats, Oblahma especially, know exactly what they're doing. Assuming that what they're doing has anything to do with what they're saying to the American public is Ms. Gallagher's mistake. It's not about solving an economic dilemna. They could've easily passed a "stimulus" package by now if it were so darned urgent. In fact the longer the downturn continues the more they think it works to their advantage. Their real goal is to pay back all the special interests that helped get them elected, make as many individuals and companies dependent on the government as they possibly can, and in the process solidify their power as a permanent ruling class. Taking them at their word is stupid.

Republicans know what to do, but they won't. They're trying to get on the gravy train instead, and the rest of us are left holding the bill.

How is this change?
It's really unfortunate that we, as Americans, are no more proactive about things that are so important to our lives and to our futures, and those of our children. The "American Idol" mentality voted in the superficiality of Barack Obama; now, too few are willing to take the time to find out what this "stimulus" package is really all about. It's massive - not just in dollar figures - but it's important to look at all of the millions of dollars of literally crap that will do nothing whatsoever to stimulate the economy, create jobs or restore confidence in the market. Look online at HR 1, encourage your friends and relatives to do so and contact your elected officials. THIS BILL MUST NOT PASS.

How is this for stimus?
Why don't we all cheat on our taxes to provide our own stimulus package and then those that get caught just claim it was a mistake?

I liked that debit card
idea -- never thought about it that way, but if the government is trying to get consumerism back on track, what better way to do it, than to say we'll give you some money, but you have to spend it and by a certain date. Interesting.

I agree
I agree with the idea that a direct tax rebate to American citizens would be the best way to jumpstart the economy. The rebates we received back in 2008 were not big enough to really be effective. We need something bigger, say 5-10 thousand for each taxpayer. A larger sum of money like that would help ensure that the money is used for new spending, not paying off old debts that do not help the economy.

I don't know that we shouldn't incorporate other parts of the stimulus package as I think the money appropriated for infrastructure upgrades would be quite helpful to the country in general. I also think there needs to be more tax cuts in the stimulus than there currently is.

Geithner's Dislike
Geithner dislikes math...now isn't that brilliant of our government to put him in charge of this financial mess. We need someone who not only loves math but is a math expert. No wonder we are in this mess...goodness isn't anyone thinking in DC...this tax cheater, tax evader, summer camp as a write off business expense...how in heavens name will he do anything beneficial for the USA and the USA taxpayer...Geithner probably has his money already stuff away in the Caymans or Switzerland...this stimulus is just another democrat gimmic and it will be the mess that SS is, Medicare is, and our entire infrastructure...as well as the mess created by welfare which totally destroyed black families...heaven help us with what is going on today China will own the USA at the rate the democrats are spending...enough is truly enough...it might just be better to let all these banks go under and suffer those consequences versus what our own government is doing to us......txpoljldy

Advise, hold the consent
I know it will fall on deaf ears....when have you ever seen Dems "waste" a crisis? No instead we have a bill under the guise of Economic stimulus package, which BHO promised he'd deliver, but in reality is the Democrat stimulus package. And the footnote is Obama tells us(constantly) how important words are. But yet they have an interpretation of their own in the majority -- It means what we say it means. That is the first guarantee it won't be a wasted crisis...for them.

Throw in S-CHIP & Socialism
Throw In S-CHIP & Socialism
BHO: On S-Chip, "this is a down payment on for universal health care... even, for the children on illegals." WINK! ObamaCare might deny your hip replacement because you are 10 pounds overweight so that an illegal can get cough syrup.

Maxine Waters berated Big Oil in the House hearings: "This Liberal would just 'socialize', er... um... aahhh... eeww... NATIONALIZE ALL OF YOU AND TAKE OVER YOUR BUSINESSES."

Fat Al Gore to 12 year-olds, "You know more than your parents." WINK! WINK! YOUR PARENTS ARE LIARS.

Obama's election financial advisor to Neil Cavuto: "What's wrong with Finland?" TRIPLE WINK! Why shouldn't our economy resemble that of Finland?

Enough with the Radical GroupThink. I wasn't born in a Communist-brought-to-you-by-Socialism nation Harvadites.

No; don't give anyone anything
Just cut taxes for people actually paying taxes and get out of the way. Let businesses and individuals who have been irresponsible in managing their affairs reap the harvest of their own irresponsibility. Let religious and charitable organizations help the unfortunate as they see fit, and get the government out of the health insurance and retirement business.

Oh, And Then, Add...
Borrowing money from China and Japan to finance U.S. family planning aid to Africa.

My children do not want to inherit the debt of social planning exercise. They don't want to insource outsourced debt for outsourced contraceptives.

O, you are getting to the point where even bald men's scalp is curling.

Cut the Crap, Maggie

Stimulus Bill
Posted by David Boaz

People like Robert Reich, who try to back up the claims of President Obama and Vice President Biden that “economic advisers across the political spectrum support Obama’s plan,” have managed to come up with two names of economists who support the stimulus plan and would not be regarded as left of center: Martin Feldstein of Harvard, a former top economic adviser to President Reagan, and Mark Zandi of Moody’s, who was an adviser to John McCain last fall.

And now the Washington Post has blown both of those names out of the water. Leaving — by my count — exactly zero libertarian or conservative economists on that much-touted spectrum. As the Post notes this morning:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/0 1/28/AR2009012802938.html
_______________________________________________

So . . . the count of Republican or conservative or libertarian economists who support Obama’s biggest-spending-bill-in-world-history stands at . . . zero.

And hundreds of economists have declared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, http://www.cato.org/fiscalreality and other papers that they don’t support the plan."

It’s time for politicians, pundits, and journalists to stop making this claim.

Why don't YOU cut the crap, Maggie?

Meet the Pelosi Pig

Sorry, It Should Have Read...
O, you are getting to the point where even bald men's scalps are curling.

This plan only stimulates one thing
Democrat votes.
Dems couldn't care less if the economy tanks, all they care about is keeping their hands on the wheels of power.

getting and keeping power is foremost in everything they do.

This plan stimulates ruin...
because it means inflation, which is exactly why the economy's in the condition it's in already, thanks to Bush and Co. When they pass this thing, watch prices, particularly for gas, rise dramatically again. In turn, watch more job losses and business closings.

Investors have lost faith
The only way to restore that faith long term is for the government to cut taxes on people that pay them and CUT SPENDING! BALANCE THE BUDGET like the rest of us peons have to do!

not a crisis, its an opportunity
for the democrats to permanently enslave the american taxpayer, and they certainly are not going to waste it.

Under a Delusion
God says in Isaiah 66:4 NKJV

"So I will choose their delusions,
And bring their fears on them;
Because when I called, no one answered.
When I spoke they did not hear,
But they did evil before My eyes.
And chose that in which I do not delight."

Remember when the Main Stream Media started headlining the recession, when the MSM began trying to create a recession by instilling fear in the American investor and the population as a whole about the coming recession. It was in 2006, years before there was any sign of a recession or a depression.

"Media Myth: The Recession/Depression of 2006 Hint: It Never Happened".
http://www.businessandmedia.org/specialreports/2007/mediam% 20yth/RecessionDepression/RecessionDepression.asp

Why would they do that? Why would they purposefully try to create an economic collapse? Are they that evil?

Remember the immediate trigger for the economic collapse? Even with all the negative publicity the MSM focused on the economy in 2006 and 2007, it still took Senator Charles Schumer to actually trigger an economic downturn; just in time for the election. It was only when he forced a run on IndyMac in June that the economy actually started crashing. Just in time for the election. Was he really that calculating - and evil?

Under a Delusion 2
I've been remembering back the last few days to some of the delusions I suffered under before I became a Christian. It wasn't a matter of rational thought or even intelligence. I wasn't dumb. I finished the last 2 years of college in 4 quarters with a 3.5 average without studying. My first room mate hoped I'd get an F because he figured that's what I deserved for the effort I was putting in. It was that I couldn't even see or understand any real truth. It just simply didn't make sense to me.

I don't think those who are undermining the economic stability of the United States and turning it into a Marxist nation are waking up in the morning and asking themselves - What can I do to today to destroy our nation? It's simply that because they've rejected the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob they are under a delusion.

This Stimulus is a Joke!
I subscribe to the WallStreetMarketNews.com who first alerted me to this recessionary market last year January 08 and luckily I was able to sell my shares in the stock market and buy Treasuries and sell short the financials making 09 very profitable for me.

Now the WallStreetMarketNews says that the U.S. economy will begin to show signs of recovering by May 09 while the "emerging markets" such as Russia and China will be severly hurt for possibly the next 2 years. Russia and China will suffer from having to scale back construction even more, manufacturing will deteriorate as Americans buy more American Made goods and services, Russians will have severe food shortages where people won't go back to having to stand in line for Communist bread but will find no bread to stand in line for because they will be in a dire energy war.

Maybe this is why Putin in russia recently stated that he will do everything to help the U.S. in it's "War on Terror"

Anyway, WallStreetMarketNews.com went on to say that foreign investment will surge into the U.S. financial system because it will simply have no better place in the world to go.

In the meantime, non-capitalist countries like France, Iceland, Russia, China will see more riots break out and more damage done to personal and private property.

I suggest you read it yourself by going to http://www.WallStreetMarketNews.com

SEEING IS BELIEVING
We, the American people have been emersed so long in the flood of media commercials our brains have been 'pickled' into believing:
1. There's a pill to cure any and all health problems.
2. Credit is only a phone call away.
3. Vacations are a necessity of life.
4. Toys are essential for our children as well as the 'must have' toys of all adults.
5. Cars--we have to keep up with the Jones' next door.
6. Whatever our hearts desire--buy now, pay later.
For years the American economy (the price we all pay for consumption of goods and necessities) has been based on what the wealthy elite can afford. The media has 'brainwashed' the public into believing every commercial is a 'must have' and a 'Right' to have. And now, we have a government bent on convincing Americans, we too can have it ALL, for government will magnanimously 'hand' it out to us, and 'bill' the generations to come 'later'.

William
What if God issued a press release stating his support for universal health care?

It's the tax burden!
I know what to do to stop the economic crisis. Abolish the income tax and corporate taxes, and institute a simple tax on all wealth at the ultimate beneficial owner. Income is mostly the change in wealth. Taxing that creates lots of disincentives. The tax on wealth would be very low to raise the same revenue, and would not cause nearly the same drag on incentives.

That will work.

Nate
Go buy a bible and read it.

Brian
Why?

Yes, Some Do Know
"nobody really knows for sure what to do about it."

I do, and so do thousands of Austrian economists (not to mention anyone with common sense). They know because they have studied history and thought carefully about what makes economies grow or wither.

That people disagree does not provide any evidence that "no one knows." It just means some people are wiser than others, which is not news.
