Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Forget about Gov. Sarah Palin.

Seventeen-year-old Bristol Palin is better qualified than Barack Obama to be president of the United States in at least one respect: Figuring out when a baby gets human rights is apparently not above her pay grade.

For better or for worse, John McCain's gutsy appointment of Sarah Palin, a 44-year-old mother of five signals a new era for women in America and perhaps the world.

Being a powerful woman poses special difficulties: Americans may pretend to enjoy (or aspire to) racial blindness, but not gender blindness. Women leaders must forge personal strategies for combining "feminine" with "powerful" even while living in a society like ours that pays lip service to the idea that gender doesn't matter anymore.

Newsflash: Of course it does. Sex is one of the more consistently powerful forces in the human psyche, and both men and women notice whether someone is female or male.

Generally, powerful female politicians fall into one of two archetypes: They are either Margaret Thatchers or Indira Gandhis.

Indira Ghandis come to power through their female family role, not in spite of it. They rise as daughters or wives in powerful political families to become mother figures -- playing off the "lady bountiful" ideal in traditional societies.

Margaret Thatchers are post-sexual figures. They're tough old biddies whose days as wives and mothers seem well behind them. Schoolmarms, crones -- they are classic female authority figures who can be trusted to exercise power "like men" because their disturbing and complicating female sexual persona has largely dissipated.

Hillary Clinton, as a pathbreaking female presidential candidate, struggled to combine both archetypes, and I think largely successfully. Hillary forged a way for a woman to appear tough and powerful enough to be president without altogether losing her female "brand."

But Gov. Sarah Palin is something completely new. She is still young, still beautiful, still in the middle of all the messy complications that the sexual role of being a woman brings -- a Down syndrome baby, a teenage daughter's pregnancy. The downsides are obvious; the potential for delegitmating Sarah Palin's candidacy remains intense.

But the potential upside for American women who are tired of pretending to be men, while remaining anxious to contribute all we can, is also intense.

What we need here is a new sexual archetype for female achievement. And I think in Gov. Palin, we have an extraordinary one: pioneer woman.

A pioneer woman is a traditional figure. She stands beside her man -- not at war with him. She takes care of her home and her community. If her man is around, maybe she lets him kill the bear. But if he falls, or fails, she picks up the rifle and gets the job done, whatever the job is that needs to be done.

Here's the larger message of the Sarah Palin story:

Life is messy. First things first: Take care of your babies. You do what you have to do, and deep down you never give up on life. You refuse to choose. The unexpected will happen, but that's OK -- you can deal with it. You are resilient, optimistic, competent and caring.

How did McCain know? A moose-hunting pioneer woman is the perfect choice to be America's first female vice president.

Is Sarah Palin up to being president of the United States? Hey, listen, anyone who can raise five children while governing Alaska successfully enough to earn over an 80 percent approval rating -- I'm just not worried about.

Gov. Sarah Palin can do whatever she has to do, and she can do whatever needs to be done.

I'm with you, Maggie
This woman will make history more than she has already. I hope she gets McCain's ear on drilling in Alaska. Pioneer, I like the sound of that.

A little fast on the draw
I'm not sure who is being the most irresponsible on the issue of Gov. Palin. Is it the people who have decided that she is the best thing to happen to the Republican party in years or the people who have already decided that this rather accomplished woman is a nothing. Both camps seem to have drawn their conclusions on almost zero information. This is a woman who could potentially be a hearbeat away from being the leader of the free world. To say that we know enough at this point to say whether that is a good or bad thing is absurd.

What is more absurd is that John McCain barely knows her.

I'm reserving judgement till I actually know something about her positions on the host of complex and difficult domestic and international issue that the next administration will face.

Maggie is right
This woman could be a great leader. She just might get more votes for the GOP then the Liberals expect. I'm talking women voters and not just what is left of the Hillary bunch. Colleges have more female students then male. That youth vote just might go GOP's way.

GOP in November rout of Dems
John McCain couldn't have made a better choice for VP. Sarah Palin is the main reason the GOP will walk away the next election. The Dems will be mortified with embarrassment at the scale of their loss.

Do some research
I was delighted when I first heard about McCain picking a woman reformer who had attained the job of Governor in such a short time. As a former journalist, I went to http://www.wikipedia.com to learn all about her. I would suggest that others who read this article do the same research. You will be delighted if you are the same as McCain and put your country first.

As usual, the ultra-liberal MSM have shot themselves in their feet. They are Obama's type of friend that proves that with them, who needs an enemy.
Edie B.

Obama ..experience and drug use
Yes she has more experience than Obama and also it seems everyone has forgotten about Obama's COCAINE use............You know once you have done cocaine the allure is always there and so are the chances of his having a relapse..........Do we really want this????????????

To Iowa PatN
Why in God's name should Sarah Palin, her baby boy, and her pregnant daughter have to succumb to DNA testing just to satisfy a bunch of scornful, rumor-mongering lefties out for blood? Bristol Palin is five months pregnant – a private family matter that you and your hateful cronies forced into the public arena with your ridiculous accusations. Doesn't her teenage pregnancy satisfy your lust for dirt? Can't you now give up this silly story line about Palin being Trig's grandmother, now that it's been proven impossible? Will the vendetta against this woman never end?

IowaPatN
Should the DNA testing be done and prove that in fact everyone in the Palin family is telling the truth, you would immediately brand the testing company as Puppets of the Neocons and discount it as *lies*. You have made up your mind and you care not at all for the truth.

I grew up in the 1950s in an Italian Catholic neighbourhood where shotgun marriages were not surprising. The wry remark was *The first can come any time, the rest take 9 months.* In those days there was no abortion, there were no condoms, and everybody knew where babies came from...even though there was no sex education in our two-room schools. Girls still got pregnant and thanks to their fathers, got married.

In spite of the Nuns with Guns that taught in our Catholic girls school in the 1960s, two girls in my class got pregnant. One had a shotgun marriage; the other was sent away to *spend the winter with Aunt Fannie* and sneaked back the next year in disgrace. Mama told us we should feel sorry for these girls and should notice what kind of road they had to travel because they made stupid decisions. Not because their mothers were insufficiently maternal, mind you, or they didnt have sex education in the schools, but because the girls themselves made the wrong decision. Not one of the five of us was ever tempted to imitate those girls.

DNA testing?
Maybe the Palins can get a group discount rate with Rielle Hunter? I do think the speculation that her child is John Edwards' is more likely than Trig being Bristol's. Anyone who still thinks that baby is Bristol's is not thinking logically. First of all, the incidence of a 16 year old having a Down's syndrome baby is very rare, while a 44 year old having a Down's syndrome baby is common. Secondly, if she had a baby in April what are the chances that she conceived another in March?

Tired of all the liberal cr@p?
Stop by my blog and read "The Audacity of Victory."

Forget the libs and their cr@p.

They can scream all they want, but when the smoke clears, we'll be the audacious victors.

Let's have a loud HOORAH!

Right On
Its good to know REAL AMERICANS belive we need leaders like Sara and McCain to leed this country compaired to Obama who would rather rule it.

Iowa ratn
What the hell business is it of yours are of anyone elses?
Why would anyone do what you suggest?
Go back to Daily Kooks.

A job for Sarah?!
If things don't work out for Gov. Palin, maybe Maggie could get her a job like Maggie's: masquerading and lying as a "journalist" while really a paid mouthpiece for the GOP.

Playing the VP card
Sarah is simply awesome! Her card should read "Have Gun ...Will Travel" Palin(din)

Gov. Palin has my vote!!!
Dems are going to be suffering from "backlash" in a few hours...Never, ever underestimate the power of women voters! The smear from the media is just relentless. Kids should be off-limits in the political arena...Personally, I will never buy another US weekly magazine. This is how we women should protest:1)boycott MSNBC, CNN, NBC and all its affiliates.2)Conservative women, independent women, all women in general should vote for the MCCain-Palin ticket.Let's get out there and protest against sexism by voting for McCain-Palin in November. How dare the media question Governor Palin's capacity, skills or abilities to be Vice President on the base of gender or being a mom??? What kind of "liberalism" is this???Liberals are supposed to be open minded, well-educated people. This is a reality check for everyone...Leaders should lead by example...The proven liberal biased media crash and failed on what they constantly preach"equal rights" for everyone(especially for women). My prediction for this November:McCain-Palin will be victorious!!!!Dems are out, Republicans are IN!!Nobama should have chosen Hillary, but he didn't...Score:
1 to 0 (advantage McCain.

An anecdotal analogy
0blahma's disparaging comments on Palin remind me of a 1988 Indian byelection.

The ruling party (whose MP in that constituency had resigned) employed much against its main opponent, an erstwhile Cabinet Minister who had resigned after the party (government) had kiboshed his investigation into corruption on a defence deal--and whose campaign staff (including one reporter from India's self-appointed antigovernment paper, "Indian Express") could fit (with some overloading) on five motorbikes. Result: "motorbike rajah" trounced ruling party's candidate handily while having to also deal with candidates from other parties (including one with rather similar symbol).

I predict similar result in US election with McCain-Palin trouncing 0blahma-Biden--which can be represented by an "Arctic Cat" snowmobile making wreckage of a double-semi!

Question?
Question: If something happens to McCain, is Sarah Palin ready to be president?

Answer: Well, if something happens to Biden, is Obama ready to be president?

Expect nasty hysteria

I have to laugh at the loons squawking about Palin's inexperience. She has the most executive experience of anyone running!

knowing your VP
GrapeGuy,

If knowing your VP is that important, why didn't Obama pick Rev Wright (anti-American bigot), or Bill Ayers (terrorist) or Rizzo (felon)?

He seems to know them very well.

Straight Talk for Iowa PatN:
here's some straight talk for ya: ARE YOU A COMPLETE MORON?!?!...DNA testing!?!?...for what??....you are a complete idiot for even suggesting this. This is a personal matter for the Palins (just like Rielle Hunter and John Edwards 'love baby' - oh, you conveniently forgot about that one, didn't you??) - where is your outraged DNA speech about them??...friggin Dem Hypocrisy!...In my opinion, it only makes her more electable - she's a normal woman, with a normal family, and everyday problems - like all the rest of us

to ex-pat in Geneva...
a 'mouthpiece for the GOP'....gee, that's so clever, you must be so proud of your creativity!...hmmm...let me think of where I might have heard that one before...oh yes!! from every other liberal who's ever existed!!...how about you use that stunningly creative mind of yours to STICK TO THE TOPIC!

Obama vs McCain debate at Saddleback

Many of us watched or saw clips from the Saddleback debate between Obama and McCain.

I have a good memory but NOT total recall, like most everyone here at Town Hall.

I have posted on my blog a 'side by side' written comparison showing the questions and answers by the two candidates.

Leftist Liberals and the Far right will probably gain little from the blog.

Independents, Democrats and Republican will gather inight by comparing questions and answers side by side.

http://geekonobama.blogtownhall.com/2008/09/02/saddleback_d ebate_-_side_by_side.thtml

Sarah Palin is totally
unqualifed to by Vice President, just as Barack Obama is totally unqualified to be President. I'm not saying don't vote for McCain, but it is sickening seeing every so-called conservative commenatator on Townhall sacrifice all principles on this point. To me, part of being a conservative is respect for experience, a proven track record and expertise. Honestly, they should all be ashamed of themselves. I would not have voted for Hillary Clinton because she was woman, and I would not vote for Sarah Plain on that basis either -- I detest identity poltics and, again, thought that was something conservatives beleived as well. And what happened to personal responsibility, good parenting, intact families, etc?

Sarah Palin is Most Qualifed!
Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Barack Obama or Joe Biden.

What business has Obama or Biden run?

Have they been in charge of 23,000 people or managed a $10 billion budget?

Obama & Biden are good at giving speeches.

Sarah Palin cleaned house in the GOP kicking out the AG.

Ohio kicked out our AG Marc Dann for sexual improprieties with a subordinate.

Go, Sarah, Go!

Good One Nick!
"Question?
Question: If something happens to McCain, is Sarah Palin ready to be president?

Answer: Well, if something happens to Biden, is Obama ready to be president?"

It's amazing how the libs are inadvertantly showing that the number two on McCain's ticket is more qualified than the number one on Obama's.

Sarah Palin
The libs have absolutely no business calling Bristol's situation "a scandal". Their close familiarity with the word might be the cause; however, I do believe jealousy would be the more appropriate term. Some simply hate, others merely cannot seem to respect a simple philosophy - some women like to have babies and husbands and families. So mind your own stinking business, you low lifes!!
Marsha - a conservative and PROUD of it.

#2 observer1234 a reply:

You are entitled to sound off. Your principles are basic text-book, largely served by NOBODY who runs for office nowadays. In this life, we take what we can get.

Sarah has in fact, executive experience. Her background suits the GOP platform, and the state where she served is important these days. Alaskan and Palin's policies there correspond in many ways to our current energy policy. I'd rather have an Alaskan serving as VP than some politician from Kansas or Kentucky.

Sarah is YOUNG; a truly exciting candidate, as opposed to our coming President. He was smart to realize this. YOUTH will respond better in America's near future, with to younger Presidents.

Picture in her stead Joe Biden; long-winded liberal warhorse who excels at nothing but snarling and sneering.

He entered Washington politics in the '70s! Is that an appropriate choice out of Democrats' hotbed of cold feet --who wanted to CUT & RUN out of Iraq? He never ate a mooseburger or won any important elections. He's from DELAWARE, for Pete's sake!

"What did Delaware--what did Delaware? I don't know, I don't know-- Alaska, Alaska!"

That was a cute old song in the 1940's; appropriate for this argument. Alaska trumps Delaware in my book.

Vice Presidents are here to learn
That's the role of the office - to understudy the President. The President sets policy, selects a cabinet, and forms the administration. In the unfortunate event that the President dies in office, the Vice President comes into the office with an administration already fully formed by their predecessor.

That's why the Vice President is not required to be as experienced as the President. Ideally the Vice President is a younger, principled Statesman who benefits from the 4 to 8 years of experience understudying the President and becomes one of the party's leading candidates at a future date.

This is why an Obama (completely without experienced) + Biden (experienced) ticket makes absolutely no sense. The man without experience makes all the command decisions.

Meanwhile a McCain (experienced) + Palin (a candidate with some executive experience) conforms to the President-VP system in a perfectly practical manner.

A pioneer woman, eh?
Anyone else besides me thinking "Sarah, Plain & Tall"? Although, of course, this Sarah is anything but plain...

Oh! Smell that Smell
Burning Liberal Braincells. Smoke is coming from their collective ears. I just love that smell. Sarah was the match that lit the fire! I am going to really enjoy watching the Dems go down in flames in November.
I am very excited and pleased that McCain picked such a wonderful choice for his running mate. I look forward to the next 2 months with great relish. I havern't been this excited by a Republican since Reagan. Wouldn't Ron be pleased!

Tonight Palin should say the following:
"I was a little surprised at all the attention I've received for my husband's DUI twenty five years ago. If the press is so eage to do some digging, I would encourage them to ask what was Obama's affiliation with William Ayers. They should also asked how he could sit in a church based on black liberation theology for twenty years and not hear comments such as "God Damn America.""

For those elitists who think that
Governor Palin is not "qualified", I seem to recall that the pundits thought that GOVERNOR SPITZER would eventualy run for president. I hear silence from the libs . . .

I do not consider it "elitist"
to beleive that a candidate for president and vice president have substantial government experience. Nor do I think that is an unrealistic expectataion. Is it "elitist", if you are ill, say with a heart condition, to go to a medical center that specializes in the treatment of that illness? In my opinion, John McCain is much more qualified than Barack Obama to be President. And, in my opionion, Sarah Palin is totally unqualified to be VP, and was picked solely because she is a woman, which is identity poltics, which I detest.

When Sarah is told...
..."you don't have enough experience to be president."

She should say: "I have enough judgement to know better than to affiliate with a known terrorist who tried to kill and maim Americans. I know better than to affiliate and do political favors for a convicted felon."

Swimming Upstream
Mr. Sam Walton must be smiling down on Governor Palin, a kindred spirit who got where she is today by "swimming upstream" (see chapter two or three of his engaging autobiography w/ John Huey).

But mere strength and willingness to CHANGE are not enough. Saddam Hussein had strength of will. Vladimir Putin has enormous strength of will. This tyrannical type of strength is not what we need. Rather, we need Sam Walton's "country first" strength, a morals based on honesty, decency, courage and wisdom for justice and fair play.

Like Walton, Palin likes to hunt. I don't know beans about hunting other than it is a bloody sport. Bloodymindedness about our energy security (no foreign oil) is a must. Our energy security needs to be American Resources Only!

Getting back to Sam, Wal-Mart's success began at a small Ben Franklin in 1951 or so. Sam kept pushing for the folks, not just to get rich. The proof is, he kept working long after he needed to work. Sarah seems like one who's in it for the right reasons--she wants to fight for justice. And she started out fighting for better education for her kids at the PTA. This alone qualifies her to lead the country herself in due season

Sarah Palin
I've read that the "Good Ole Boy" network who run the various media outlets are behind this dispicable attack on Palin's family. Also, one "anonymous" left wing zealot. Why aren't they made public by Name, Media company and a Picture so all of America can better understand who & exactly what forces are involved in our politics at the highest levels.
Why shelter them???
Americans need the truth!!!

Nick, maybe that shows she
has more judgment than Obama, but I still think she is totally unqualified and that this was a oure identity poltics pick by McCain -- and that disappints me.

Not a Republican
This is frightening. The more I learn about Palin, I am convinced she is not a Republican. Her thinking is more in line with the Alaskan Independent Party of which her husband was a member.

Maggie is right
I wouldn't worry about whether Palin is up to being President. We can worry about that when we get to it.

In the meantime, her core beliefs alone make her the role model women today don't see as much as they should.

And it will be easy to understand which people would attack Palin's views and why: mentally disordered liberals because they feel more comfortable with poor and dysfunctional role models akin to themselves.

And, by the way, I think McCain knew this about Palin at least as far back when he made that comment alluding to how the poor role models, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, seemed similar to the Obama campaign, a couple months ago.

McCain knew what he was doing when he picked his VP.

Lydia and O bserve 1234
She was not a member of the Alaskan Independence whatever. That was an error, since vetted.

Sarah is uniquely qualified to take over the moral high ground from Dimowits, who refuse to argue about their feel-good ideas which are impracticable.

They can no longer say that they are the party who represents women. Furthermore, Sarah, can serve as an unbelievable role model for women and maybe even break through to those who refuse to listen to anything a man (except the Chosen One) says.

Maggie Gallagher writes
"For better or for worse, John McCain's gutsy appointment of Sarah Palin, a 44-year-old mother of five signals a new era for women in America and perhaps the world."
I personally think the "ole Silver Fox" hit a Grand Slammer when he made that gutsy selection of Sarah as his Veep.
Now we have some misguided conservatives trying to sabotage a possible victory by Palin/McCain by helping the MSM dig up dirt to smear Sarah. :-(
Turning our country over to a bunch of Marxist/Socialists for 4, maybe 8, years to punish the Republicans is beyond my pay grade to understand.

Hepp the Libs John Cary! Dey is goin' bonkers and some of them may commit Hari Kari.

willibeaux
Great post, my friend!

I agree: it was very shrewd of McCain to pick Gov. Palin. She adds so much to the Republican ticket, too.

It is a shame that some conservatives won't tolerate her on the ticket, though. Looks a lot like cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Grand Slam Grand Slam
Grand Slam. Grand Slam. Grand Slam.

YLG! that's an
excellent way to put it. Cut their nose off to spite their face. So sad. :-(

YLG WilliBow
What "conservatives" won't tolerate Sgt. Sarah on the ticket? On what basis? For why?

It's Mac the Knife I have found intolerable, as has Sowell, and Keyes and Levin and others.

Sarah is on the cusp of convincing me to retreat from my determination to vote "None of the Above".

I have trashed the "lesser of two evils" and the "wait till next time" arguments the length and breadth of TH.

Tonight Palin advanced a variation that moved me to tears (as did her pledge to represent my family, with a child with Autism, in the WH).
Do I want a man who has shed his blood for me in the WH, or one who has merely shed his skin for a bunch of America Haters? Someone who was an unwilling captive of the NVA, or a willing cohort of the NAACP. A recalcitrant prisoner of Ho Chi Minh, or a regular parishioner of Jeremiah Wright?

Sgt. Sarah almost has me.

The big mick

williB
Willi, it doesn't have to be above your grade.
I've made excellent cogent arguments and so has Coulter, and Keyes and Sowell, and Lavin why McAin't is the GREATER evil to Reaganism and the Republic. See my blog on TH The Big Mick.
I've made this argument, and trashed the only 2 reasons advanced TO vote for McShamnesty ("lesser evil" and "next time") up and down the threads of TH.
You have NO excuse for not thinking it through.

It is VERY plausible that 4 years of Jimmy Carter the Lesser would be LESS damaging then continuing the death by inching toward Socialism under The McChurian Candidate.
Sgt. Sarah almost has be convinced, but "I can't see it" folks like you who won't think it through. As I have said again and again, what value to hold the Eastern Front when McAin't has SURRENDERED--JUST LIKE Hussein, the Southern and Home Fronts. McFeingeld ain't going to limit Gov. Gang 14 ain't gonna give you Scalias, No Drilling in ANWR ain't any good on energy, McShamnesty surrenders to the Reconquistas? HOW is he "better".
Only Sarah has got thru to me and YOU ain't helping!

I was committed to voting for Charles Baldwin (Constitution Party) but Sarah Palin has changed my mind.

If Obama gets elected with a Democratic majority in the House and Senate he will get a lot of very liberal legislation passed which will be virtually impossible to get repealed.

If McCain gets elected with a Democratic majority he will get nothing passed and we can make him veto liberal legislation as long as the majority is not veto-proof. That's a much safer situation for Constitutionalists.

Therefore we have two goals: elect McCain and prevent a veto-proof majority of Democrats in the Congress.

With Palin as VP it sets the stage for a Palin/Jindal ticket in '12...

So just keep saying to yourself SaraCuda! and work hard in the next two years to get a Republican Constitutionalist majority in the Congress. If we set things up properly for Sarah and Bobby the Marxists who've taken over the Democratic Party are toast. Burned toast at that.

Pioneer woman
Bravo!
Well said.
Who ever said women couldn't do it all didn't know the women I know. Family, home, politics, careers -- in a constant rotating schedule of first-things-first take care of business mentality. Multi-tasking at it's best.

Right on! I liked what you said. It makes perfect sense. We already have way too many people dependent on government for everything. The great Democratic giveaway has created a monster multi-generational dependency, and they want to keep expanding it! Thanx for your instructive comments about how to avoid more of the same.
