Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

My husband has a collective term for the antics of men like New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer: "stupid monkey tricks."

As in, "Now there's a really stupid monkey trick," as he greeted me with Monday night.

Last week in Boston at a conference sponsored by the Marriage and Abstinence Education Partnership, presenter Rozario Slack explained that he tells each of his own kids, "You are not an animal."

Right. No animal would plan for its mate as exquisite a humiliation as Eliot Spitzer inflicted on his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, Monday afternoon in broad daylight, in front of us all.

I don't have a lot of hope for the public morality. I don't suspect this is the last time a man entrusted with high office will descend into a sex scandal, or even break the law (as Eliot Spitzer did) to get what he wants. (And in his former role as the "Sheriff of Wall Street" -- i.e., a white-collar crime specialist -- Gov. Spitzer was unusually well-versed in the laws that he was breaking: laws against prostitution, against transporting a prostitute across state lines, against "structuring" or moving money to avoid federal reporting requirements, to name just three.)

But can we at least end this barbaric practice of dragging your wife before the cameras while you confess your shameful guilt? If she wasn't there in the hotel room when you did your crime, don't ask her to do your time.

The practice began relatively innocently as something an accused man might do when he denied the allegations . A man's wife at his side showed that she, at least, believed the guy when he said he did not do it.

It was former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey, I believe, who began the modern practice (Can we ban it along with waterboarding?) of parading the little wife before the cameras to hold your hand as you confess your guilt. The goal is to get the shell-shocked wife to demonstrate to the public that the offense is forgiveable. If his wife forgives him, how mad can you be?

But the practice requires a man to turn the best instinct of his wife -- to unite behind the family in crisis -- into an instrument of her own public humiliation.

And another thing: Can we end the public practice of trying to shame these wives into divorcing their husbands?

There's a reason we feel impelled to do this these days. Adultery has been redefined as a "private matter," as Spitzer put it in his vain, Clintonian attempt to redirect attention from his crimes to his sin. Because we no longer have any public punishments for adultery, we have turned wives into instruments of the public morality: If she doesn't punish him by divorcing him, he will go unpunished, which is intolerable. (Without some punishment, won't all husbands stray?)

I'm tired of this transference of the sins of the husband onto the wife. Leave the wives alone. Let's forget about standing by the man, but can't we at least agree to stand by the woman?

Look, I'm not a moron. I understand that men will use prostitutes for their own purposes without caring what happens to them, but can't we expect a little higher standard of behavior from an outrageously guilty husband toward the wife he has just embarrassed and betrayed?

Eliot, you are famously one big, tough dude from the Bronx. An "f-ing steamroller." Can't you go out in front of the cameras and face it like a man?

WHAT ABOUT MCGREEVYS PARENTS?
He had the audacity of gaul to haul them in front of the cameras also.
His father, a career military man, looked particularly aghast. You could see from the expression on his face that he would rather be on the Bataan Death March than standing at the podium with his son.
I wonder if Jim gave him an autographed copy of his tome about his exploits in mens rooms and highway rest stops?
Now there's a man who really had my sympathy.

No one but the Spitzers know the truth
What was Eliot's marriage like? I don't know. Neither do you, Maggie. How then can we intelligently comment on how they ought to behave? For the record, I despise Eliot Spitzer as a vicious bullying extortionist tyrant who used the power of his office to ruin exemplary citizens and companies in his quest for power. I also despise him for exposing the office of the governor (and probably previously Attny General) to blackmail. However for visiting the hooker I do not judge. If his private behavior is anything like his public, then perhaps Mrs. Spitzer deserves our sympathy. Or maybe not; she did pick him. Why? We don't know. If he is a jerk, what is she? We don't know. For all we know being married to her was punishment enough for all his sins, and in this small segment of his personal life laid bare we see a pathetic trapped man looking for a little comfort. I have seen seemingly normal marriages with terrible secrets, and have seen women who believed it acceptable to deny a man having, holding, love, and honor but still expected him to forsake all others, as if only one vow actually mattered. Judge the governor if you wish, but let God judge the man, for only he & they know the truth.

Philandering Politicians & There Wives !
In my professional career I dealt with many instances of spousal abuse both of the physical nature as well as mental sort. I was also in contact with on a regular basis many politicians at the state level and have served on security details for two different New York state govenors and thus the actions of Gov. Spitzer does not surprise me. The sad thing is that in many of these instances the wife and family are well aware of the actions of the husband but like a First lady in the White House several years ago they signed on for the Full Ride and have become accustomed to the fame, the perks, and the title and so they look the other way.
In my opinion standing beside her husband on camera while he tried to explain his actions was as much a part of the contract as Hillary standing beside Bill and assuming the role of the victim. And it sure did pay off for Hillary.

conservatism...NOT
tsk, tsk...all this talk about other people's marriages and what they should be doing in these marriages is reminding me of what I heard on talk radio, years ago, about "It takes a Village."

Spitzer: much ado about nothing
Spitzer hasn't been arrested, or indicted or even charged with any crime at all-much less convicted. the only thing he's admitted to (by inference) was breach of trust $$$

Yes, he's immoral, but at least he is not a homosexual who solicits men in a filthy public restroom toilet stall, like that disgusting Larry Craig who repubs allow to remain in office.

I say let us values voters send Spitzer a message-this is hardly worth the time of law enforcement in these perilous times.

STANDTALL
Not to nit-pick, but I'm curious. How did McGreevy force his parents to stand in front of the cameras?

Weren't they there of their own volition, and don't they shoulder the lion's share of responsibility for coddling the wimp rather than forcing him to face the music ALONE, as should resonably be expected of a grown man and holder of executive office?

Spot on
"The goal is to get the shell-shocked wife to demonstrate to the public that the offense is forgiveable. If his wife forgives him, how mad can you be?"

Exactly.

There's another excellent column on TH today from Janet LaRue called "Stand by your Womanizer" that addresses this topic equally well and echoes what Gallagher says here. Namely, keep the wife out of it. And if she chooses to be by his side, it may not be quite so altruistic as one might assume at first glance.

I often wonder if the wife of that man who "...did not have sexual relations with that woman" would have stood by his side quite so steadfastly unless she had designs on her own WH run someday.

When did adultery become OK?

Imagine if a reporter had discovered that Spitzer kept loaded guns in his home: He would have been frog-marched directly to jail.

But he only committed adultery. And enlightened, post-modern Americans know that adultery is a purely victimless crime that has absolutely no ramifications on the spouse or children.

It's a good thing that we now lock away men who keep a loaded gun in the house to protect their wives and children and no longer punish those wonderful angels who bring home the gift of venereal disease, HIV, heartbreak, neglect, abuse and empty wallets to their wives and children.

And of course, any babies that might be created as a result of his extra-marital hobby can be easily terminated at will. Because we not only condone abortion but openly celebrate the "right" to kill unborn babies.

And we wonder why Muslims hate us?

The Irony-Hillary & Silda
Both of their husbands caught with their pants down around the ankles, one of them is the concubine of Monica Lewinsky's boyfriend the other is the faithful, dutiful work girlfriend of client No. 9 on the Emperor's club VIP list, these women are in love with their Democrats.
One is running for the Presidentcy of these United States the other is the first lady of New York both of them stood side by side with their husbands in the public eye.
Can't you just hear Patsy Cline singing in the background..

Uhhhhh, Maggie....
"It was former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey, I believe, who began the modern practice (Can we ban it along with waterboarding?) of parading the little wife before the cameras to hold your hand as you confess your guilt."

I believe it was Hill-Billary on Baba Wawa that started the "practice" that the rest of these Stepford Wives have turned into an art form.

Yes! Tammy Wynette's, I got confused I kept hearing "Crazy" in my mind and the voices are somewhat similar. I screwed that up didn't I.
Thanx for the correction.

A politician in Georgia once opined that rape was more easily forgiveable than homosexuality because *at least rape is normal.*

I guess you believe the same, eh? A guy has to have sex 24/7 or he will die, after all, so why should his wife have any concern where he sticks it or when, right?

My question is not why do these men continue to humiliate their wives and show their daughters (Spitzer has 3) how marriage will make them happier than remaining single (no matter how successful they are). My question is why do the women do it???? Should my husband confess to me that he has spent $80,000 hiring hookers and transporting them across state lines, not only humiliating me but exposing me to godknowswhat disases, my first instinct would NOT be to stand on an international stage in a spotlight and lend him my applause. My personal response would be to order him out of the house, arrange for a separation, and let him know in words of one syllable that he has a LOT of work to do before I will ever stand by him again.

In other words, he has paid $80,000 for his bed, and now he can lie in it alone.

Remember
It was a Republican, Dick Armey who once said something along the lines of -

"IF I ever did this, the last words I would ever hear from my wife would be - How do I reload this GD thing - as she stood over my bleeding body with a smoking shotgun in hand."

My Republican wife would be doing the same but saying nothing. She already knows how to Re-load weapons!

A Salient Point
Is the VERY Young age of the Call-Girl in question though the MSM won't mention it, I WILL...22 years old is BAREly older than Spitzer's own DAUGHTER...
Ya gotta wonder how he would have felt if it WAS his OWN daughter that showed up at his room.
It was okay with him that it was someone elses daughter though even if she was only 22.

I wish I were Governor Spitzer and the press came to me asking about some "PIECE of TAIL".My foot would be so far up someone's rear end, the largest telescope in the world could not find it.Powerful men have Powerful needs and drive.Sometimes they manifest sexually. So what?"US" have told the lie, about being a "CHRISTIAN NATION",so long, until we have reached a point of belief.Do resign Governor Spitzer, please!

Just adultery ?

No not quite. It's been reported that he used public funds ($80k).That makes it a CRIME ! "It's a private matter".Wrong again...he's a public servant, that makes it a public matter ! Also,it has been reported that his wife DOES NOT want him to resign. If that's true what does it say about her ???

Resign
I hope he has resigned by now. He can get his forgiveness later.

He was on state business. He was on the taxpayers dime. He did violate the Mann Act. He knows it and if he was the prosecutor he would slam this guy into submission.

Punishment
"Without some punishment, won't all husbands stray?"

No. There really are men who are loyal to their wives even without the threat of sanction. I have had the opportunity to cheat many times with no risk of exposure, and each time I declined. I believe my word should be worth something.

common sense and morality OUT the window
These people who think it's A-OKAY for the wife to stand by her GUILTY husband are beyond belief. This was HIS crime--not hers!!....I am disgusted that he paraded her out there as though she were a party to his crimes. What ever happened to justifiable outrage??

It's the daughters I pity
A wife that stands by her man in this situation makes her own choice. She chose to have a relationship with this guy and she can continue it if she wants. (There are some prositutes that are not looking for money, they provide a service for a ring, a house, and a nice car)

But his kids didn't get to choose their dad.

billybob
Your points are good ones. Furthermore, if he stated the money was given to a dummy corp and declared it as a business expense, he is also guilty of tax fraud.

MUTLT: Funny you should mention...
“And of course, any babies that might be created as a result of his extra-marital hobby can be easily terminated at will. Because we not only condone abortion but openly celebrate the "right" to kill unborn babies.”

Funny you should mention that, because Ms. Gallagher and other right-wing female-chauvinists never seem to comment about the other side of the adultery issue, i.e., the “Paternity Fraud” epidemic. According Susan Shapiro Barash, author of "Little White Lies, Deep Dark Secrets: The Truth About Why Women Lie," published by St. Martin's Press this week, as many as 60% of women will cheat on their partners. Result? In cases where paternity is in question between unmarried partners, women lied 30% of the time about paternity. Among married partners, over 4% of all women commit paternity fraud. Mandatory paternity tests would reveal the full extent of said epidemic, e.g., NOW is currently fighting the Tennessee State legislature’s efforts to enact mandatory paternity test for all children born in Tennessee. Apparently a woman committing the most despicable form of domestic abuse is a “private matter” between the two partners.
What is implied by the reaction to Mr. Spitzer’s despicable behavior, including handing over $80K to the Mob, is that because an Ivy-League educated, privileged lawyer can engage in such behavior, then most if not all men are just as capable of such pig-like behavior. Why? In this culture of institutionalized Misandry (men=bad, women=good) such televised behavior just reinforces the notion that men in general are the pigs that society assumes them to be.

The real pity here...
is not that Spitzer's wife may elect to support him either in the immediate future or in the longer term. That's her choice. He is going to fade from public view so fast that pretty soon, no one will care whether she stands by him or dumps him. It will be on page 56 in the newspaper, in two column inches.

The real pity is that nitwits like Cornpone Harry exist -- i.e., breath air -- when they apparently think that, "Oh, thank Gawd it wasn't homosexuality. It was only adultery." Cornpone describes himself as a "values voter." Ha! His "values" appear to be in the toilet, at best. Homosexuality is a sin -- but ahhhh, mere adultery, and as a public official no less, is just a minor little inconvenience.

If you wanna' talk about minor little inconveniences, well Harry...

,Public vs. Private
I am unconvinced by Miss Gallagher that adultery should be converted into a public act. I'm glad she understands that public shaming, a la "The Scarlet Letter," doesn't work as a tool of social control. But unless a prosecutor can prove that public money was used in the governor's transactions, his behavior ought to remain a private matter. Anyone possessed of decent libertarian instincts might be inclined to agree.

P.S. Is it just me who's thinking that Mrs. Spitzer looks like Jennifer Aniston's long-lost older sister?

Did Anybody Catch
The Human Garbage on MSDNC/Huff&Puff/etc saying the answer was to LEGALIZE Prostitution.

private matter my pattootie...
For any here who think "private" behavior doesn't have any affect/effect on public behavior and policy...go read Dr. Sowells column today. I'm with you Maggie. If I have to see one more COWARDLY (No cajones in my book)male "public" official parade his wife in front of the camera's...I am going to hurl from here (TX) to Alaska. How just like a cowardly man to use his wife as a shield. Don't islamic radical fundamental terrorist use their wives and children as shields too???????

Think it through

@garageman:

As poster Bob states "tax fraud" is possible. That makes 2 open doors for a PUBLIC OFFICIAL to be susceptible to BRIBERY by the entity employing the "ladies".
Still think it's a "private act" ONLY????

Please expand your list:

1) Thank God it wasn't homosexuality
2) It was the wife's fault

The Democrats would be burning Spitzoid at the stake!

Its his wife's choice to appear with him
I do not know why she'd make such a choice. She ought to tell him to hire a hooker to do the appearances! I guarantee you that the three daughters are agonizing over this. Aside from anything else, its just nasty picturing your dad with other women not much older than you!

The bottom line is, those who want to go about hooking up like flies should not marry and have kids. Once married and there are kids, that obligation trumps the pee-pee- end of the story.

Hall of Fame
They should open up a Hall of Fame in Washington for political sexual deviants. The inaugural class will be led by none other than Bill Clinton. His fellow inductees, selected in their first year of eligibility, will include Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Barney Frank, Eliot Spitzer and James McGreevey.

You might want to include David Vitter in that HOF...

garageman
I thought the same thing. She looks like Jennifer Aniston. Totally! The guy's an idiot.

re: garageman
There are a couple of problems with your belief that this is a private matter. The fact is that Spitzer admitted he had a woman transported across state lines (from New York to Washington DC) for the purposes of prostitution. That violates federal law, specifically the Mann Act. Secondly, he tried to avoid the reporting required on wire transfers over a certain size by trying to get the bank to remove his name from the transaction. That is a violation of our tax laws and a felony. Not to mention the fact he tried to hide payment for a criminal act is obstruction of justice...yet another felony. So that's 3 felonies from the criminal act Spitzer admitted to which considering Spitzer is the top law enforcement official in the state of New York that makes his crime very very public.

Power Corrupts
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

These women can make up their own minds. Obviously, they themselves see some advantage of standing by their man during these sick public confessions. The whole situation is pitiful.

One Other Thing
In the past few days we've learned what a political "steamroller" Spitzer is and how he was given to playing hardball with people who got in his way.

And then I think back to that debate how Hillary stammered like Ralph Kramden when she was asked if she agreed with Spitzie's plan to give driver's licenses to illegals.

Maybe she was afraid to cross Spitzie-boy.

Why is it...
that liberals call American soldiers "children" and often call desperate and abused young prostitutes simply a "private matter"??

Will someone please do a column on this striking shift in attitude?

Is this his only vice?
This is crazy behaviour. I hope there are no other vices like ummm drugs......

Lack of righteous indignation...
I'm going to say the same thing I said about Larry Craig, and any other republican caught in embarassing circumstances of this nature...

1. It is not illegal to solicit sex (at least not for money).
2. It is not illegal to be homosexual.
3. It is not illegal to commit adultery.

Big Idea- Your functions as an executive or legislative officer in the government concerns the upholding and creation of laws and legal matters. Your reputation and credibility in such things determines on your ability to remain within the law and uphold the laws, not on your personal morality. Tricky Dick was a great president... until he broke the law. He was tricky for a very long time before Watergate. Not every president can be like Truman or Eisenhower or Reagan- and even Reagan had his sneaky moments too. Certainly not to the point of cheating on his wife, but certainly in his brinkmanship strategy against the Soviet Union.

Spitzer may be different here. In hiring a prostitute, he may have broken the laws. If this is the case, then his reputation as a governor may be impugned for all its worth. But for his mere moral misdeeds? Surely a matter for him and his conscience, not us.

In the Line of Fire
Yes, we're all familier with the tactics of Muslim men who, during a battle, put their wives and children out in front, in the line of fire, so that they, the brave men hidden behind them, would be spared.

The tough guy Spitzer is finding out what it's like to be the target of tactics he used against others who broke the law. What better way to show how much he loves his wife and daughters than to have them share his humiliation in public. That will truly strengthen the family bonds.

Private Matter?!

People have a right to elect or have a say about the type of people who are in a position to govern them. This is why issues that offend the moral sensibilities of the public, such as married men frequenting prostitutes, are never a ‘private matter’ for public officials, even if it wasn’t illegal.

By insisting that his prostitute dealings were a ‘private matter,’ Spitzer was saying what any good liberal believes: We - the Left - shall be sole the arbiters of what behavior is fair to judge. And to his credit (and to Bill Clinton’s credit before him) it works, as evidenced by the libs that we often hear parroting the ‘personal issue/private matter’ excuse to explain their own lack of standards.

Obviously Spitzer’s behavior says something about him as a person, and as a leader. We can all debate the seriousness of the issue, but at the end of the day we should all be free to judge for ourselves if he is the type of person who belongs in public office.

BTW, I think a REAL man would insist on doing the news conference alone, even if the wife was willing to be there.

respect
Everyone needs to make their own decisions about what to do in this kind of situation, but for me, I'd be busy packing up either his stuff for his move out of the house, or me and my kids. Then I'd be at the doctor getting tested for STDs. This wasn't a brief fling with a co-worker, it was ongoing for 6-10 years.

He obviously doesn't have any respect or care for his wife and the mother of his children (or his children). He exposed her to unknown numbers of STDs during the 6-10 years of unprotected sex with prostitutes.

She clearly has no self-respect, supporting him while he announces how he betrayed her and their daughters. And what kind of example are they both for their teenage girls? His behavior is telling them that his sexual gratification is more important than they are. Her support says it's OK.

Women who value themselves don't allow men to treat them like dirt. Period.

Vitter sees no comparison?

David Vitter: “Enormous Difference” Between My Case And Spitzer’s
Please help me understand?

Vitter sees no comparison

TP-Sen. David Vitter, R-La., has been mostly mum on the prostitution scandal that forced Democratic New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to announce his resignation last week. But Vitter let down his guard a bit in a conference call with constituents. Scott Jordan, editor of the Independent Weekly of Lafayette, said he was able to ask Vitter whether he would resign after his phone number was connected last year to a Washington, D.C., escort service that federal investigators say was a call-girl operation. “I have made a very serious mistake a long time ago and I have to live with that every day,” Vitter said, according to Jordan’s account. “That’s not a flippant statement. I need to spend my whole life making up for that.” According to Jordan, Vitter turned “a bit defiant” and added: “Anybody who looks at the two cases will see there is an enormous difference between the two of them. The people that are trying to draw comparisons to the two cases are people who’ve never agreed with me on important issues like immigration and other things.”
