Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The new Robin Williams movie "Man of the Year" has a premise: The American people are fed up with blow-dried, talking points-dried, media-packaged, made-for-TV political candidates. This November, when the people of Pennsylvania vote on whether to elect Rick Santorum or Bob Casey, maybe we'll find out if that's really true.

One small example. I call up Bob Casey's campaign and say: "I'm a nationally syndicated columnist whose column is carried in four small Pennsylvania papers. I'd like to know what specifically pro-life things Casey is willing to vote for. Because I've been to his Web site and I can't see any information there."

This is not just jousting on my part. Bob Casey says he's against gay marriage, but he's also opposed to every possible way to stop gay marriage -- not only a federal marriage amendment, but a state marriage amendment for Pennsylvania, too.

And these days many people feel they have a right to redefine the most basic words (such as "marriage"). Why not "pro-life," too?

The receptionist is polite and responsive: "The person you want to talk to is Bobby, our deputy press secretary. Wait just a minute."

She comes back on the line and says "Bob says he's not the right person. Can I transfer you to Larry's voice mail? He's our press secretary." So I talk to Larry's voice mail for a while. But somehow, Larry never calls me back.

If Bob Casey is so pro-life, why is it so hard to find something on his Web site or someone from his campaign headquarters -- the janitor, maybe? I'm not proud -- willing to blurt out what he means by it?

Dan Savage, a nationally syndicated columnist who sometimes writes for The New York Times, has no problem decoding what a vote for Bob Casey really means. He's in from the Left Coast raising money for Philadelphians Against Santorum. His Daily Pennsylvanian interview on the subject can be seen here. (graphic language warning).

Here's the part you can reprint in a family newspaper: "Bob Casey is not entirely about Bob Casey," says Savage, because "if the Democrats control the Senate in part because Casey is there, it's going to empower a lot of Democratic politicians who I agree with, more than I agree with Casey on issues like choice and gay marriage and other social values issues. So I'm excited about electing Casey because I'm excited about Patrick Leahy being head of the Judiciary Committee. I'm excited about electing Casey because I'm excited about Hillary Clinton having more power than she does now."

Here's the one thing I know about Bob Casey: I don't know much about what he would actually do, because that's the way Bob Casey likes to run his campaign.

Here's the one thing I know about Rick Santorum: Nobody in America has earned the undying hatred of the hard left for his courage in standing up and fighting for basic American values, whether it's the value of every single human life, or the importance of marriage as the union of husband and wife. (Full disclosure: A fund-raising consultant for the small nonprofit I run once asked Rick Santorum to sign a fund-raising letter. We raised $8,312 on expenses of $15,752, which means Rick Santorum once cost my organization $7,440.)

The undying hatred of people with Dan Savage's views is a badge of honor for Santorum personally, whatever happens in this election, but it is also the real reason for the millions of dollars flowing into Bob Casey's campaign war chest: If Rick Santorum loses, nobody in Washington will ever want to lead on the gay marriage issue again.

Gay marriage advocates know this. The people of Pennsylvania deserve to know it too.

Santorum's a great Senator
But the loss of the Senate in a month also isn't the end of the world, as I've written ad nauseum.

Bush: Veto pen is where?

The Reaganite Santorum
I think it's time the Reaganites ask themselves why this Senator is having such a difficult time. He's the Reagan Conservative, right down to being a leader for border control and fiscal responsibility. There isn't one Conservative pundit who doesn't think he's peachy keen.

Now don't get me wrong. I happen to like the guy; if he was running in my extremely Blue state, I'd be all over his campaign like a rash. I even think he'd be a great Senate leader and maybe someday the big one.

But I also want to know if the immigration issue is supposed to tank GOPs that are less than enthusiastic about kicking one tenth of the work force back to Mexico, then why is this man fighting for his political career?

Gallagher recycles
gallagher recycles her old and tired talking points with a new twist. Santorum has constantly denigrated gays by eqyating their lives and their relatioships with practitioners of necrophilia and bestiality. He sees no difference between my spouse and a dead body or dachshund. And Gallagher finds that a proof positive that Santorum should be elected.

Santorum's aide Patrick Traynham is openly gay. Now, santorum either believes that Traynham can be equated with necrophiliacs and child molesters which make the scenario really intersting. or that he doesn't believe it, he only spreads his poison for votes. Votes that come from hatemongers like Gallagher.

Man has become notorious as one of those who choose hatemongering toward a minority as acceptable way to political power. Well, I shouldn't be surprised that Gallagher supports him: after all she took money from administration in exhange for sevices to promote their anti-gay politics.

The haters are always on the Left
Opposing gay marriage is not hating. It's having a traditional and abiding view of an institution that has been one man, one woman for thousands of years. It's the radical homosexual lobby that is hating Santorum for having traditional marriage views. They're wanting to change an institution that has been the foundation of families for thousands of years.

Ask yourself this -- if Santorum has a gay man on his staff, why would this man stay on Santorum's staff if Santorum hated gays? Mr. Traynham is free to leave Santorum's staff anytime. No one is forcing him to stay on staff.

Not from Penn
Not being from Pennsylvania I don't know all the issues for the state. I did a quick review of Casey and Santorum web sites. It seems that there are more issues for Americans than Gay rights and abortion. Imagine that. Casey is saying we need new directions and Santorum seems to be saying more of the same. Candidates who align themselves with Bush on even a bare majority of the issues will have trouble in this election. The, lets be smart and re-evaluate our direction vs. the 'stay the course' view is what is important. Thinking can bring leaderhip. Looks to me like the public wants a change.

Gallagher is a two topic writer I usually do not read. She will take a buck from anyone to further her myopic mission and support for a candidate from her is likely as bad as an endorsement from Bush in this election.

SANTORUM VIDEO YOU MUST SEE!!!!!!

Blue State/Red State and the FBI
As James Carville so succintly put it, "Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Mississippi in the middle. My congressional district is in one of the 4 counties surrounding Philadelphia which are usually the swing vote between the two philosophies.
Having heard Senator Santorum debate Bob Casey earlier this week, there is no doubt that Santorum has a far better grasp of the facts of the world. At one point, Santorum asked Casey if he knew about certain events, and Casey's reply was "Why don't you tell us, Rick? You know everything." This snide comment rolls up Bob Casey in one remark. Casey's politics are whatever he thinks will get him elected. Santorum's politics are let's do what is best for the country.
Our Congressman, Curt Weldon, is also in the battle of his political life. Last Friday, the FBI suddenly raided the home of Weldon's daughter and one of his major backers looking for evidence that Weldon directed some consulting to his daughter's firm. Is the timing coincidence? I doubt it. In one move, this could sour the swing voters not only on coming out for Weldon, but Santorum and Lynn Swann, the Republican gubernatorial candidiate, as well. Whoever made the decision at the FBI to dig up an old charge that had been closed for 2 years and make it public at this moment, may have changed the direction of the country.

Vote for United States
Vote for United States, vote for Rick Santorum. It is a thankless job, but if you work hard, you can make some headway. Senator Rick Santorum seems to work hard and get results. I like that.

Too few real leaders
There are too few real leaders in either party. I see Rick Santorum (I am a former Pennsylvanian) as one of the few. He is courageous, whether you agree with him or not on the ideas of our time, and courage is the quality we could use more of in America, from both parties. Casey strikes me as wimpy, over handled, inexperienced, opportunist. Santorum has earned the respect and friendship of many on both sides of the aisle and should be returned to the Senate for another term. The issues surrounding national security are too dangerous right now to send in the wrong people to handle what is coming. Let's not be naive about the big picture in terms of the threats to the United States from many places. Let courageous men and women stand firm. The weak, less courageous politicians will not understand what is at stake, and will not be equipped to stop it, to everyone's misfortune.

central premise here is correct
The main idea here is certainly correct. Beyond the value of ones own representative, it is also very important who that representative will vote as leader in general. So some Liberals will argue for keeping a Ben Nelson, and some Conservatives for keeping a Lincoln Chafee even though Chafee is more liberal than Nelson. But it is funny to see that argument used for Santorum. Presumably anyone who is that concerned with keeping the Senate in Republican hands is already pulling for Santorum.

It is also not clear why, if that is the argument here, so much of the support was for the idea that Casey is not as socially conservative as he claims. Apparently he supports keeping gay marraige illegal by having there continue to be laws against it. That is one way to keep it illegal. But then Casey's appeal presumably is not to people for whom this is the top issue anyway, since they are not the ones who have turned on Santorum, and this is clearly a for or against Santorum election.

It’s a good strategy
"Here's the one thing I know about Bob Casey: I don't know much about what he would actually do, because that's the way Bob Casey likes to run his campaign."
--------------------------------------------------

Jimmy Carter employed the exact same strategy to get elected president. One must remember it’s only good for one election cycle.

PA and Rick
We're damned proud of Rick here in PA, at least, those of us in this Red (red meaning MARXIST!) state who are conservatives. I wish our other senator was more like Santorum.

Casey is a non-entity, he's what the Germans call Stimmvieh, "voting cattle", whose job it would be just to vote with his party, and who's not there because of any brilliant ideas or talent.

You're right, Santorum is a Reagan conservative, and they're all too scare these days. Pray that enough of my fellow Pennsylvanians understand that we need Rick in the Senate, and that they come out to vote on the 7th.

social issues
Much of your comments in the article have centered on social issues such as gay marriage and abortion. Have you considered that maybe if Republicans got off these issues that we could unite. The majortiy of the people in the US are not against abortion. I feel this in mirrored in the Republican party as well, yet the religious right pushes the issue to the extent it chases off other right wingers. Bobby Jindal in Louisiana is a good example. He was doing fair before the election, but then came out against abortion. This kept a good many conservatives from the polls.
The same for gay marriage. Don't be against it. Just don't be for it. In other words, no group should be given preference on any issue. Gay's can be married. All they have to do is write up a contract, get a preacher to marry them and convience an insurance company they are a couple. End of story.
The party should change its focus to one of leaving everybody alone!! Then they would win all elections.

Casey
is running on his father's coat tails. Bob Casey the elder was one of a dying breed of Democrat. He was pro-life. He was humiliated at his Parties convention for his stand on that issue Now, his pathetic son, and today's unscrupulous, unethical Democrat Party are pimping the old man's reputation.

I lived in Rick Santorum's district briefly and voted for him. I have never regretted that vote. I can't say the same for some other Republicans that I voted fro.

Santorum/Casey
I am not from PA; but, I do think Santorum would be a better choice. I reviewed both sites and all I could find on the Casey site was a plea for new directions! But where are these directions going? What kind of plan does he propose? As I scrolled through the Casey site I found wonderful hyperbole and rhetoric; but nothing else, no positions on anything except lots of wonderful, ambiguous language! Casey's performance on the debate was just that, a performance, he never answered a question concretely! I do think if elected he will vote as he is instructed, even if, it would not be good for PA.

Santorum-Schiavo
I support Rick Santorum. He's a good man and I hope he wins. However, his polls tanked at the same time he became so prominent regarding the Terri Schiavo case. For centrist voters, especially suburban women, it seemed downright bizarre that Senator Santorum stuck his neck out on such a personal situation as the Schiavo case. Most likely, and much more quietly, thousands of Schiavo situations occur every day, although usually involving much older people.

santorum sucks
Santorum is a divider...he will lose... running a campaign on non-issues such as gay marriage and abortion displays poor leadership. The govt. has no business telling gays they cant marry nor telling people they cant have abortions. Its an individual's decision to do either.

Bobby, You're on the wrong website
I think you meant to go to DailyKos.com. I recognize their distinctive raving in your post.

My Vote goes to Santorum
Casey doesn't explain clearly what he stands for! I don't trust people who don't speak plainly. Doesn't want to step on anyone's toes. I know what I'm getting in Santorum; he's very explicit on his issues. He's a traditionalist and respects human life; every other issue is secondary to me. I'm a catholic and that is the most important issue to me. Therefore he gets my vote as well as my family.

What is wrong with this world?
PA doesn't want to re-elect Santorium, but in AZ we somehow get McCain re-elected over and over? I would take Santorium over both McCain and Kyl any day of the week and twice on Sunday!

I watched some of the debate between Santorium and Casey. Casey is an idiot. You can tell that he is simply reading lines that he has been given. He never gives a specific answer to anything. People like that scare me! And they should scare everybody. I may not like McCain, but atleast I know his position on issues.

Bought-and-paid for Maggie
Ms. Gallagher is continuing her position as a professional mouth piece for the Bush Administration. NEVER forget that Ms. Gallagher was exposed as a fraud in 2005. Although she pretends to be a syndicated columnist, Maggie Gallagher was paid $21,500 by HHS to push the White House's $300 million initiative to encourage marriage.

Nothing -- absolutely nothing – this woman says as a crumb of credibility.

Still getting those GOP checks, Maggie?
