President Obama has spent much of the past six months talking about all the things he inherited from George Bush. Unfortunately there are a lot of things he did not inherit from Bush, among them how to be the leader of the free world. The uprising in Iran has revealed Obama’s lack of leadership, but even worse, an apparent weakness when it comes to speaking up for freedom for everyone in the world.

Obama’s stated willingness to sit down and negotiate with Iranian madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions was a source of concern for many Americans during the election, but “hope’n change” was evidently more important to the majority of voters . Not surprisingly we now have a president who stayed silent on the protests in Iran for days, then issued only a tepid statement, followed by several similar comments.

Those on the left, and some on the right, have praised President Obama’s approach. George Will said, “The president is being roundly criticized for insufficient rhetorical support for what's going on over there. It seems to me foolish criticism. The people on the streets know full well what the American attitude toward that regime is, and they don't need that reinforced.”

I don’t know that the people on the streets do “know full well what the American attitude toward that regime is.” They know what it was. (Does “axis of evil” ring a bell?) But maybe they also know how strongly President Obama has denounced his predecessor’s approach to foreign policy and his world view in general. Add to that Obama’s recent response to the protests and there are probably a lot of people around the world who don’t “know full well” what the American attitude now is.

President Bush spoke forcefully, and often, about freedom and liberty and democracy. The often tongue-tied public speaker Bush was most eloquent and at ease when talking about those principles. His desire to see freedom and democracy spread throughout the world is deeply heartfelt and that was evident in his speeches.

Ken Wheaton wrote about Obama’s response on his blog, “We don’t have to bomb Iran. We don’t have to be bellicose. A statement of support from the United States would show that our government actually cares about the PEOPLE of Iran. God knows that Americans of all stripes–via Twitter and other media–are making that clear…As someone said yesterday, “He’s trying to vote ‘present,’ but he can’t.” He’s the president now, not a junior senator from Illinois. He should act like it.”

When Barack Obama ran for president, many said they supported him because they wanted the rest of the world to like America again. Being liked is nice, but every true leader knows it is far from the most important thing when it comes to leading.

To some extent President Obama has relinquished our country’s role as leader of the free world. He is reacting rather than leading. It is not necessary, nor would it be wise, for Obama to make the United States the issue. But what he could do is use some of his famous speechifying to really inspire and encourage those seeking freedom. There are people literally giving their lives in the streets in the pursuit of freedom and the supposed leader of the free world has been largely silent.

President Obama’s wait and see and try to say as little as possible approach on Iran stands in stark contrast to that of President George W. Bush. I wish Obama had inherited George Bush’s passion and commitment to those pursuing liberty and democracy around the world.

The following is from Bush’s 2006 State of the Union speech:

“Every step toward freedom in the world makes our country safer, and so we will act boldly in freedom's cause. Far from being a hopeless dream, the advance of freedom is the great story of our time…”

“At the start of 2006, more than half the people of our world live in democratic nations. And we do not forget the other half -- in places like Syria and Burma, Zimbabwe, North Korea and Iran -- because the demands of justice and the peace of this world require their freedom as well. No one can deny the success of freedom, but some men rage and fight against it…”

“Democracies in the Middle East will not look like our own, because they will reflect the traditions of their own citizens. Yet liberty is the future of every nation in the Middle East, because liberty is the right and hope of all humanity. The same is true of Iran, a nation now held hostage by a small clerical elite that is isolating and repressing its people. The regime in that country sponsors terrorists in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon, and that must come to an end. The Iranian government is defying the world with its nuclear ambitions, and the nations of the world must not permit the Iranian regime to gain nuclear weapons.”

“America will continue to rally the world to confront these threats. And, tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran: America respects you and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran.”

That’s what it sounds like when the leader of the free world speaks.

That's ridiculous.
Did you stop to think that maybe, just maybe, the world of the Iranians doesn't revolve around the US? That maybe for the last century, one of the things the Iranian's have wanted most is to be free of external influence in their country and government? What Americans want and how they feel has no bearing on their world. This is a transparent attempt to use these important events in Iranian history as a slight against Obama.

Half the world did not arrive at freedom
in 2006 because the United States stood by, "waiting to see."

The Soviet Union did not collapse because the United States was "waiting to see what would happen." [Recall: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"]

Millions of Iraqis are unafraid to walk their own streets today, not because the United States decided to "wait and see" what Saddam Hussein (not Barack Hussein) would do.

Wait and see is the philosophy of a follower, not a leader. We've elected the best Follower-in-Chief since Clinton. Only difference: Clinton followed the polls and Obama follows his teleprompter.

If Barry is so concerned about "waiting to see," why is every bill he wants to force-feed Congress a CRISIS that must be voted upon TODAY!!!!!?

If one actually does stop to think before typing furiously at the sight of free and open criticism of some beloved bureaucrat, it should be more than apparent what the people risking their lives in the streets of Iran really want.

One would have to be quite dim to miss the message they are frantically trying to send to the rest of the world by any means they can manage to find.

Slighting these brave souls to avoid offending Mullahs who gun down unarmed young women as they peacefully march for valid elections deserves open criticism.

about a Boy who for all of his delusions isn't free himself. He has handlers and is at their beck and call. It would be foolish to expect him to perform contrary to his assignmet or nature. We don't have a "Leader" or President in "The One". What we have is a community orgainizer who is nothing more than a socialist who believes in the statist policies of the left and borders on the tenets of communism where everyone is like a worker ant.
What he wants to spread is not a peaceful co-existance between nations by showing strength and power to resist the forces of evil but a weak excuse of cowtowing to those who would destroy not only us but lesser nations by their strenght and power, either military or economic.
What a sad joke as he destroys our power and turns us into one of the lesser nations.

Nick you may be partially correct about the criticism of Obama. However, he has brought this on himself with his actions not his words. To think he is an effective leader because he has the ability to read a teleprompter and deliver the speech that has been written for him well is not sufficient to be a leader.

People are worried where he and his administration and congress are taking this country. The remark about not wasting a good crisis should explain why he is trying to move so quickly. He does not want us to take the time to think through the issues of the day.

If Obama believes in a "hands off" policy, why then not be consistent. How about a consistent policy towards all.

For example, no meddling in the affairs of North Korea. Who the hell are we to demand that NK quit their long-range missile and nuclear weapons programs? The Messiah's just ASSUMING that the insane little Dwarf is up to no good! Maybe he's afraid of South Korea invading his pissant little hell-hole. If you took the time to watch news coverage of the events in Iran (and not coverage trying deperately to attribute it to the 'Obama Effect'), you would see a lot of signs in English...not Arabic, not Farsi, but ENGLISH. And just who do you think those signs are meant for? They're meant for our benefit, fo us to see what the Iranian people are calling for, so that we can bring international attention and pressure to bear on the regime. We are not being asked to physically intervene, but we are being asked to show support for people that are risking and losing their lives for what we have...FREEDOM AND LIBERTY!

Do we really have to talk about freedom?
Could it be that the leader of the free world is not comfortable talking about freedom? While Obama may have an interest in America being liked, it may have to be on his terms---accepting his apologies and his own personal goodwill.

I've never heard him extol America's role in liberating other peoples from tyranny. He is reluctant to use the moral authority that is bequeathed to American presidents through blood shed and lives lost for the cause of freedom. It is one thing to say he is being cautious in his comments, but what about his days of complete silence while leaders of other nations spoke out clearly against the Iranians regime.

It appears that years of association with America bashers like Wright and Ayers have affected Obama's ability to do what other presidents would instantly do---speak out for the cause of freedom & liberty. It is as if he fears that doing so would validate American values and America's past role in defending freedom. He may see this as a contradiction of his apologies to the world.

I hope with all my heart that Obama is not thinking like that, but I'm not hearing anything from him to make me think otherwise.

Every Last Breath
Obama will be embarrassed into speaking out more strongly on the situation in Iran. His early silence, however, tells us what he really wants: Iran as a near-nuclear bogeyman, there to distract there American people while Obama pushes his radical domestic agenda on America.

If Iran wins its freedom anytime soon, historians will attribute it to the freedoms that George Bush gave to Afghanistan and Iraq, and to the international sanctions against Iran that Bush put in place and/or strengthened. That is an eventuality which Obama will fight with every last breath - one that could doom his 2012 race.

A power hungry politician and not a humanitarian, Obama is quite happy with Iranian status quo.

I remember
Yes "axis of evil" does ring a bell. It was the false statement used to dress up a speech by George W Bush. It was followed by an election in Iran in which the reformist incumbent Khatami was bested by the radical Ahmadenijad. Apparently the Iranians did not actually like being called evil as much as Byrd seems to think they should.

How did Byrd miss that? Or why does she not feel that is relevant to her discussion?

This is not an American revolution. The Mullah's in Iran would like to be able to argue convincingly that it is one because it would help to silence their opponents. But Obama, wisely, is not giving them the ammunition they want. Good for him.

Obama, Democracy and Liberty
Obama's Carter-esque approach to dictators around the world should come as no surprise. He's sounded this note since his college days.

More than that, it should be clear that Obama's committment to democracy and liberty extends no further that using those ideas to gain power. Like mose leftist ideologues, once in power, the democratic process comes to be seen as a hinderance to his policy agenda.

The supreme leader of Iran had a
sermon this past Friday that Barack would do well to listen to. It was filled with rage against the US and Israel for what is occuring on the streets of Iran. This religious leader blamed all unrest squarely on the US.

Of course the whole speech was ended up with a heartfelt chant of death to America. This is the mindset of the leaders of Iran. Obama is a complete fool to think that by talking nice to these Iranian leaders they will suddenly see the error of their ways. In a sudden religious conversion they will see the US as not the great satan but as a lovable neighbor.

Barack these men see themselves as doing God's work on earth which includes converting all to Islam by any means necessary. No amount of smiley faced diplomacy will make them rethink their basic beliefs.

Obama as a Constitutional Scholar
When are we going to get past this myth?

Obama was an adjunct (i.e., part-time) lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He made a point of publishing nothing from law school onward, realizing that it might be scruitinized later on as he climbed the political ladder. His only contribution that could even remotely be called "scholarship" was a radio interview in 2001 where he outlined his ideas on "positive [constitutional] rights".

Let's get real and stop building BHO into a god-like idol. Like the rest of us, he still puts his pants on one leg at a time!

Even George W. Bush, who weren't conservative President (no child left behind, Medicare Part D, illegal immigration and open borders), still understood his role as a leader of the free world: freedom is the most natural desire of all people.

Bur a great teleprompter Speaker, raised in Islam, socialism, radicalism and black liberation (racism and anti-Semitism) is on the side of the despots: he bows to them. He did not bow to the brave youth being killed in the streets in Iran.

Obama's grandmother said she was afraid of an aggressive black panhandler. Obama's mentor Rev Wright made a life of luxury out of pandering to and promoting racial prejudice in the black ghetto. 47% think he shouldn't own GM/Chrysler (AP).

43% think his handling of the ec. (MSNBC--another leftwing screwloose).

If these are produced by lefty *media,* the numbers are probably much lower. When he falls below 52% in popularity, he'll be under his electoral percentage and show the voters feel true buyers' remorse.

And King Elect O’s numbers and *accomplishments* (mostly giving endless speeches) are ceaselessly hyped by the MSM 24/8, so if regular people begin to dislike the pres. icon, it comes from their own assessments, and not from anything *learned* from the lefty press.

Defenseless
Even the usual liberal antagonistic apologists and disciples of the Obama faith seem to be having difficulty defending Obama's clear demonstration of his inability to lead. Glaring incompetence is hard to defend.

If the Iranians can cow the president this easily, just what does he believe he can achieve in direct negotiations with his chief intimidators?

The analogies are endless…

Yes, the analogies are endless and I love them because they are true reflections of the virtues of what is GOOD and what is BAD. In politics, as in sports the GOOD and BAD come into clear focus in the extremes. Yet, in politics the playing field is manipulated from outside by those with a self-serving desire for influence and power that has corrupted our institutions to the point of no return; unless WE THE PEOPLE make sure that the playing field is not manipulated.

The question is…How do we accomplish this? (1) Your VOTE…does count…yet your vote is easily manipulated by those with the self-serving desire for influence and power. (2) Your right to petition governments at all levels…yet this right has been severely restricted by those same self-serving individuals and groups.

What is the answer?...That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

The real question is would a

natural born American citizen act differently than does obama when sitting in the Oval Office.

To date, obama's presidency has gone exactly as I expect a presidency run by a foreigner who is an enemy of the U.S.A. would go.

Nothing about obama's presidency has been surprising to me. However, his motives have become clearer as it becomes more certain every day that he is not even a naturalized American citizen, much less a natural born American citizen.

To all of you who want to criticize my take on obama's eligibility to be POTUS because of his citizenship, I have only one thing to say, "PROVE HE IS ELIGIBLE". I have proof he is not.

Iran is a country with interests as is the US. Sometimes those interests are contrary, sometimes they are compatible, and sometimes they can be improved through mutual agreements.

To take an example of the first class, both Iran and the US are opposed to Taliban rule in Afghanistan. In 2002 we worked with Iran towards this end. Then the Bush administration decided that a dishonest case for war with Iraq was more important than Afghanistan and we got the axis of evil nonsense and an end to working together.

Attitudes towards Israel are a clear example of the middle group. The Iranians don't like Israel, even if this revolution is successful the new government likely won't either, while we are allied with Israel.

An example of the third might be a deal in which we help Iran with its energy needs in exchange for monitoring that makes a weapons program less likely.

The point of negotiation is finding mutual agreements, not getting the other side to acknoledge that they are evil. This is something that people should understand by the time they count as adults. The fact that conservatives either don't or pretend not to is very strange.

The last thing any nation on earth wants to hear is another American President blather on about freedom and democracy. Obama is smart enough to know that a) the Iranian mullahs will use that as a tool to scapegoat the US because b) we haven't practiced what we've preached for the last eight years.

Obama has handled this brilliantly. He's said just enough, and what he's said is TRUE (refreshing after W): This is a conflict for the Iranian PEOPLE to solve. For once we're not going to stick our noses in someone else's business.

When the Iranian people settle this, at the very least, the mullahs will be weakened. At best they'll be gone. But either way, the Iranian people will appreciate the respect we've finally afforded them, rather than obtusely labeling and entire NATION "evil", and providing the Mullahs with all the ammo they ever needed against us.

Thank God Bush is gone.

only for areas his Reverend Wright covers, leaving everything else a question over which academic principles the chosen one deems best apply, but...

...the news reports seem to say that the government the protesters want is not much different from the one currently in power. And what has the West ever gained, in the long term, by replacing one Muslim-run government with another? They're all more or less the same. In fact, last time the US tried to intervene to ensure a Western-friendly government ruled Iran, Iran ended up being run by the Western hostile theocrats still in power today.

At least they have the semblance of a democracy, and the only issue in question is the accuracy of the voting system, which is of questionable reliability even here in
the US.
