Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

On more than one occasion news has been made by comedians at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner.  In past years, Don Imus and Stephen Colbert drew attention for the mean-spirited nature of some of their jokes.  This year’s most controversial moment came from Wanda Sykes’ comment that Rush Limbaugh was the 20th September 11 hijacker and her hope that his kidneys would fail.

I watched some of the White House Correspondents'  Dinner on C-Span this weekend, but what I found most interesting was something that was broadcast by C-Span to fill the time when the guests were eating.     The event was a panel discussion, sponsored by the Writers’ Guild of America, East, which had taken place at the Newseum.  The panel consisted of late night comedy writers and the subject they addressed was the relationship between news and comedy.

“So what does comedy tell us about the truth that the news can't? That's the question we're taking a stab at answering," said WGAE President Michael Winship.

During the panel discussion Bill Scheft, a writer for the David Letterman show for 18 years, talked about a segment on the show that I remembered well.   Newsbusters blog posted a transcript of Scheft’s comments:

“The moment that I am most proud of having been on the show is when we had John McCain on after, you know, he, you know, bolted on us to go save the economy. When he came back to the show, and he was, at the time he was out on the campaign trail beating the Bill Ayers drone. And I gave Dave a note before we went on about McCain's relationship to Gordon Liddy. And, in the middle of the interview, McCain starts talking about Obama palling around with terrorists and Bill Ayers.”

Scheft continued, “And I stand under the spiral staircase on stage and I was just standing there going: ‘Liddy, Liddy, say Liddy, please say Liddy, please say Liddy.’ And Dave said, ‘Well don't you have a relationship with G. Gordon Liddy?’ And you just saw, you know, whatever chip was left in McCain's head just kind of, phhh, and ‘well I, you know, I know him.’ ‘Well, didn't you go to a fundraiser, didn't you attend a fundraiser at his house?’ ‘Well I.’ ‘We'll be right back.’ Which is the great thing that a host can do, you know, ‘we'll be right back.’...I'm more proud of that than any single joke that I've written.”

That episode of the Letterman show was highly anticipated because McCain’s last minute cancellation of his earlier appearance on the show had resulted in an angry tirade from Letterman.  Viewers wanted to see if McCain and his good buddy David Letterman would kiss and make up.

When I heard Scheft’s statement I was surprised because I remembered the “Ayers-Libby” exchange well and  thought it was the dumbest  comparison I had ever heard.  Watching that segment of the Letterman show I wondered why McCain didn't come straight back at him and explain to Letterman that Ayers was a domestic terrorist.  Ayers advocated bombing public buildings.   Liddy organized a failed break in of the Democratic National Committee and spent over four years in prison paying for it.   I was surprised to learn that what I thought was a ridiculous and uninformed comparison was something David Letterman’s writer of 18 years was more proud of than any single joke he had ever written.

He didn’t say why that made him more proud than any joke he had written, but he believed the Liddy line destroyed McCain.  Based on other comments made during the panel, his political leanings were no secret.

Questions were taken from the audience of over 300 “political leaders and opinion makers.” One audience member quoted a comment from Jon Stewart about not making jokes about Barack Obama because he’s just not funny.  She said “Well, he is pretty funny,”   then asked if the panelists didn’t make more jokes about him because he's black or “is it because he is a Democrat and we're all so in love with the fact there's a Democrat in the office?”

Scheft responded to her question, “Well, I think the reason why it's not cause  he's black, and it's not because we're afraid, it's because so far he's just a little too damn competent and we ain't used to that.”

Fellow Letterman writer Tom Ruprecht, who talked earlier about Bush’s “babbling” and about how Republicans lie,  jumped in and assured the audience that "We're lookin.”   Scheft continued, "Yeah, we'd love to see him slip on an oriental rug, believe me, we'd like to see him do something like that. Or just, would it kill him to mispronounce a world leader?  Would it kill him?"

Would it kill Scheft to recognize the “damn competent” Obama’s many gaffes including his reference to “Cinco de Cuatro” or to the Austrian language or his misreading of the words on his teleprompter ?   I think maybe it would.

At one point in the panel discussion, J.R. Havlan, a writer for The Daily  Show, talked about how important comedy writers are to the political process.  He said they help people “learn how to watch and decipher the news.”

Opus Moreschi, a writer for The Colbert Report, said they are meticulous about research because they want the basis of their jokes to be factually true.  He said they sometimes talk to experts in certain fields in an effort to be as well informed as possible because the truer it is, the funnier it is going to be.  He said, “You know I don't want people to get their information from us, but there is an understanding that there is some truth in it. “

When coverage of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner resumed, viewers could see Wanda Sykes aiming her most vicious comments at conservatives like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Dick Cheney.   Ben Shapiro noted that instead of being tough on President Obama she chose to “gently stroke his ego with jokes about his pecs, his dog, and his basketball skills.”

From the late night comedy writers’ panel, I learned that not only are late night joke writers as anti-Republican as I always suspected, but they are completely aware of how much influence their work has on public opinion and they consider the political implications.  If they pay as much attention to research as they claim, they are aware of all the ways they could destroy Democrats and President Obama.   They just don’t choose to do it.  There is no huge shock there, but it was a little surprising finding it on open display for all to see.

Photo Op
Does Townhall have an endless supply of photos of Obama that they plan to paste onto every article they publish?

Just curious, and somewhat nauseated.

The humor biz
Chainsaw,

Obama sells. TH exploits him as much as anyone. Look at the inane 100 days lovefest with Prager, Medved and Hewitt. All Obama all the time. The free market, get used to it.

The writers' desire for their humor to be accurate is the key to why Bush's flubs were exploited-- they reflect the man-- and why a few uncharacteristic flubs by Obama are ignored. Only the extremist TH types trying to get traction with an anti-Obama message consider his flubs to be significant.

Competence isn't that funny, but it's just a matter of time that the new administration will be a source of good jokes.

No Material?
The man bowled a 26! ...and talks about visiting "57 states, so far!" He thinks 8 trillion in debt added to 2 trillion in debt will equal zero and he thinks adding cap & trade taxes will help our economy. He thinks apologizing to our enemies will cause them to like us and he thinks terrorists will spill their guts - if we'd only say please.

....and this is only the tip of the iceberg. This man is a walking dream for any comedian with integrity to his work.

Political Satire Is Dead
With the possible exception of Rush Limbaugh, often branded as a right-wing extremist by the ignorant and uninformed, the era of Will Rogers and Mort Saul style political satire is non-existent. After all, it takes intellect, style, and an acutely sharp sense of humor to do true political satire, and I cannot think of anybody else these days who has these qualities, except maybe Chris Rock, and he ain't into political satire.

This guy is a laugh bonanza!
We probably don't pick on him because of his tragic upbringing. You know, the private schools, growing up in paradise, full boat to Columbia and Harvard Law. How can you pick on someone who never got a break in life?

Otherwise President Obama is a veritable gag fest! He is a cross between the fumbling Ford and babbling Bush. I can't watch him without falling down in a heap of giggling fits!

Those Opposing Socialism
Those opposing socialism should stop trying to skewer oBUMa, it just isn't fair, and it just isn't nice --- didn't your mothers teach you it is wrong to make fun of morons?

The Chin
The last wannabe tyrant to do the chin thrust oBUMa has mastered so well was the originator himself - the great comedian Benito Mussolini.

Mussolini was just a scream, especially in his final days.... I thought he was just a yuk a minute hanging upside down from that lamp post in Milan.

Comedy is all in the interpretation, eh?

LORIE

It's a contest between the Mainstream News Media, Acdemia and the Entertainment Industry.

Who loves, adores and worships Obama the most?

Right now it's a three-way tie.

Hypocrisy

One of the four cornerstones of liberalism is hypocrisy. Everyone else is expected to abide by the rules THEY set, but, of course liberals themselves are exempt from them. For example, had Dennis Miller wished for Nancy Pelosi's kidneys to fail, as the little trailer-trash halfwit, Wanda Sykes, wished Limbaugh's to fail, the left'd be doing an Imus on him right now.

But the left thought it was hilarious to wish death on another human being, including our popinjay president who laughed right along with the rest of the sycophants in the room.

HERE'S HOW FAR THE HYPOCRISY EXTENDS

Matt Lauer interviews Ann Coulter and repeatedly questions her about her "tone" and about being "civil".

Think he'd do the same with Jeanie Garofalo? Think he'd question her tone? Nah. The line of "questioning" would go something like this:

"Jeanie, you've been very outspoken concerning the recent, somewhat controversial tea parties. Tell us why."

Bill Clinton must be...
..green with envy! He only had Monica to give him 'party favors' ...while Ovomit has the entire MSM and Hollyweird elite to 'toot his horn' ...to their mutual delight!

Obambi in the headlights.
When Obambi's plans have gone astray: (and they will,) when the war in Afghanistan becomes "his" war, when unemployment doesn't turn around, when inflation shoots up taking interest rates and prices for everything skyward, the stammering and stuttering will just be hillarious. Obambi will stand there at one of his "news" conferences, with nowhere to go. No more a dog and pony show, the press and 'da-funny guys' will eat him alive as they did Jimmah Carter. Oh how fickle these folks are when they realise their at a dance with dog-doo on their shoes!

You want truly FUNNY?!
Then check this guy out. He is HILARIOUS, and makes fun of liberals like no other! http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/2009/05/obama-provides- comic-relief.html A MUST READ.

HYSTERICAL satire!

Comedy or Tragedy

Tragedy is when I stub my toe. Comedy is when Wanda Sykes falls into an open sewer and dies.

Libby
Wait didn't Libby have a plan to assasinate a journalist John Anderson and was just waiting for the go ahead. And the little break in that yes he did go to jail for was part of an attmpt to fundamentally undermine of political system.

While it was a stupid thing, the plumbers very existence was a threat and now Libby is a darling of the Right with his own radio show.

So the Libby question was a far one if you want to play the guilt by association and that is why it was such a got ya to McCain.

As to the writers being anti-Republican. A word almost everyone is anti-republican these days. The writers like there pay checks and if they thought the only way to keep them was to write nasy jokes about Dems believe me they would be writing them. But now bashing on Republicans is way cool cause they are so bashable. Kind of like the keystone cops.

Funnies line
I thought the Joke about Palin was tasteless and the stuff about Rush over the top. But by far the funniest thing in the bit was when she went after Hannity for his claim that he would agree to be waterboarded for charity. Keith Oberman said he would donate 1,000 a second.

But Hannity is a no show chicken hawk. He has to wear rubber underwear just thinking about it.

So when Wanda Styles said you could break Hannity by giving him a middle seat in coach it was so funny because we all know its true. At least Rush has the common sense not to focus attention on the fact that he is a chicken hawk.

Tony
Stephen Colbert is brilliant.

not funny
You can not make jokes about demos because there is nothing funny about them. The demos are just plain idiots and truly are the axis of evil idiots.

Not Funny? Find your smile!
Famous song by Judy Garland and Fred Astaire: We're a Couple of Swells

We're a couple of Libs
We're real good at telling Fibs
But no one sees the knife before we stick it into your ribs
We're a couple of Nuts
We joke about spending Cuts
But bankruptcy will fell you just as well as an uppercut
The Patriots all have sent us lots of Tea
But we don't take deliv'ry no siree
No siree!

We would drive up the Deficit, so we're printing up more cash
We would add to the Deficit, but you might think we are rash
We would tax for the Deficit and this just might come to pass
Then we'll lie 'bout the deficit
Then we'll lie 'bout the deficit
Yes we'll lie while the deficit we amass.

G.M. Motors are we
We push you to Bankruptcy!
Your CEO is fired so you hand all the keys to me!
We're the favorite Tops
We're expert at photo-ops
We'd like to show you Air Force One but you'll have to bring the cops!
The Patriots all are marching in the streets
But we don't care to listen in the least
In the least!

We would yell at Republicans, but they haven't got the ears
We could call on the Democrats, but they've been corrupt for years
We would look for a Patriot, but it's risky to be Joe
So we'll Chalk up the Deficit
Yes we'll Chalk up the Deficit
Yes, we'll Chalk up the Deficit to B.O.!

And from Easter Parade!
Never saw pols look quite so ditzy before
Never more impressed! Teleprompters and more!
When they aggravate, or commentate their lotus-eater warnings
Are they out of touch? Out to Lunch? What a Bunch!
For

When they all astonish, and everyone admonish
Their Propaganda-laden words! A Keester Parade!

They'll be all a flutter, and say the Right's a nutter
But all those words they utter are just Keester Parades!

On the Avenue,
Penn. Avenue
The photographers will snap them
And you'll find BO likes to spread his manure

Oh I could write a ditty
About how he's not witty
And add the Congress to the list! The Keester Parade!

[Alternate chorus]
All the bark and show!
Isn't just B.O.!
With a teleprompter handy
The newsmen will swoon as they hype this buffoon

Oh, I don't mind the Wagyu
My beef is how they Gag you
And call it Fairness Doctrine!
It's the Keester Parade!

Newspeak
It is humor when a liberal does it.

It is hate speech and mean-spiritedness when a conservative does it.

George Orwell are you listening.

Tibby

Liddy Giddy
The comparison of G. Gordon Liddy with Little Billy Ayers would be laughable, if it weren't so palpably indicative of the moral equivalence that permeates all of the Left's tu quoque hissy fits. Those involved in COINTELPRO, and The White House Plumbers, were responding to ongoing actions, such as Daniel Ellsberg's treason and Weather Underground bombings. They did so with authorization of those privy to the sick intentions of the criminals involved, which can be found in the writings of Ayers and Dohrn; and in the service of a government that rightly felt under siege. Think Fort Dix. Of course, Ellsberg's actions still might look good, if one is able to glance over the three million dead Cambodians like Chomsky did.

Last I checked, Liddy did his full sentence, eschewed vengeance on those who gave him authorization, and proudly stands by his actions to this day. Billy Ayers is not so brave: "Guilty as hell, free as a bird. What a great country!" Denial, denial, denial.

As with the "torture" false argument, the Left only sees fault with America. Never her enemies. Perhaps they will have a clearer view when their heads are in the basket. I doubt it.

Speaking of Orwell
"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."

UP THE REVOLUTION! LIBERTY OR DEBT

SEEK AND SPEAK THE TRUTH

Yeah, right.
Scheft continued, "Yeah, we'd love to see him slip on an oriental rug, believe me, we'd like to see him do something like that."

Or like walking into a window? Or bumping his head on a helicopter?

That would be a gas. But the Messiah is too perfect for anything so human as that to happen to him.

Colbert
Is about as brilliant as a burned out light bulb

really funny
My favorite joke of the evening is when Obama talked about Michelle's right to bare arms. That was truly funny and a great play on words--and it was funny without being mean. Who ever wrote it did an outstanding job!

While I'm not really a fan of Rush Limbaugh, I thought Wanda Sykes was way out of line. Her comments (I will refrain from calling them jokes) were not only nasty, they were not at all funny.

CHRIS ROCK
Chris Rock has much more savvy. If he'd been chosen for the event, he would not have been mean spirited. He would also have been much funnier. He's a brilliant, good hearted comic, and was born with a huge portion of "class." Head and shoulders over what's her name???

re: More TEA anyone???
Here is a word from a "Radical Extemist." Get ride of the vile hatful comments from clown like that idiot who spoke at the Wh corres. dinner the other night. Tell her to get a ticket to somewhere in Europe and stay there!!!!

Who
uh, pardon me but who is this wonda person???? I guess because I have, or had a job, " looking now " I do not stay up late enough to watch " late night tv. "
I never put much stock in it any way as that my parents brought me up to never believe a thing I heard, 1/2 of what I read, and to look things up and make up my own mind rather than allow someone else to do my thinking for me

Just when I thought....
Gangrene Gestapolo or Julianne Malveaux had to be the leading example of a flaming dooshbag on rye with horseradish sauce here comes Wanda Sykes. Can they GET any worse?

Royinoslo
Coming from a state that ILLEGALLY voted in a comedy(?) writer/comedian/failed talk-show host as senator, you would be blindly in the tank for libnut comedy writers and Obama.

Your state's credibility was minimal with your former governor, now it's gone.

Support Glenn Becks
comedy tour in June to help counterbalance the late night left angle comedy. Glenn is certainly not lacking any funny material and Obama hasnt even hit the 150 day mark yet. Either late night just aint trying or Glenn is a comedic genius.

Good insights
The other point one can see here is that these folks are biased and apparently don't know it. Want to see how easy it is to poke fun at Obama? Read Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin columns.

Also, note to Wanda Sykes about Limbaugh being a terrorist. It is Barack Obama, not Rush Limbaugh, who has friends that are bomb-making terrorists. It is Barack Obama, not Rush Limbaugh, who has ties to Islam.

Still waiting for the SNL skit
featuring Obama asleep in the pews while Jeremiah Wright rants about ole whitey killing and imprisoning blacks and screams "God D@mn the USofKKK". Michelle and the girls can be shouting "Amen" and high fiving in the aisles.

Hmm
What's hard to fathom is how anyone can think Stewart and Colbert are serious journalists when they both appear on a network named Comedy Central.

BTW
The entertainer I'm most reminded of watching team Obama is Ted Mack.

Insignificant!
Could it possibly be that Wanda Sykes is nothing more than a no-talent negro lesbian who, in the overall scheme of things, is even more insignificant than Oprah?

J-O51...
"Wait didn't Libby have a plan to assasinate a journalist John Anderson and was just waiting for the go ahead."

Plans/threats vs. Actions. Yeah, they're comparable. I get the comparison between Liddy and Ayers. Nice try.

"And the little break in that yes he did go to jail for was part of an attmpt to fundamentally undermine of political system."

Do the words "Guilty as hell, free as a bird, God Bless America" spell it out for you or should we get the flash cards?

Again, since you are obviously mentally challenged:

Liddy - had a plan
Ayers - acted on the plan

"So the Libby question was a far one if you want to play the guilt by association and that is why it was such a got ya to McCain."

Right you are, it was a "far" one. "Far" out there.

"As to the writers being anti-Republican. A word almost everyone is anti-republican these days."

Not quite, skippy. Unless you count the millions of sheep (like yourself) to afraid to admit they elected the wrong man and unable to admit that they have no clue

"The writers like there pay checks and if they thought the only way to keep them was to write nasy jokes about Dems believe me they would be writing them."

Translation: Our values and beliefs be dammed, it's all about me "gettin's mines". Typical mindset of the "Peggy the moochers" of the world, like yourself, waiting for their free stuff from "The One".

"But now bashing on Republicans is way cool cause they are so bashable."

Again, never mind what's doing right for THE COUNTRY, let's all be COOOOL!!!

"Kind of like the keystone cops."

Nice description of our current administration.

Career Suicide.
Lorie, stellar column, just so you and all the posters on this article should know, it would be career suicide for any and all Comedians, especially Black Comedians to attack or call out President Obama on any subject at this juncture.
President Obama is Jesus to liberals right now, and he's here to apolojive and bow to all world leaders to show his brethren that as their new Black Teleprompter-in-Chief he'll win hearts and minds because he's so darn cute and cool and he plays basketball. Regardless of the pork stimulus package pushing 700 billion or TARP funds bandied about at 800 billion all to be paid for by us and our great, great, great, grandchildren, no comic out there is going to say anything negative for fear of backlash.
Right now, Republicans, Conservatives and so-called right wingers such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin and Michael Steele are to be made fun of, Bill Maher is still pumping out George Bush jokes and they're only going to get more vicious.
Did you see Janeane Garafalo already playing the race card calling recent "Tea Party Protesters' racist because she saw one questionable picket sign, but she had no problem with the picket signs and photos of the brothers and sisters in Oakland who marched in support of a young black thug gunning down police officers. Al and Jesse are so proud of Janeane.
Oh! don't expect Wanda Sykes to apologise to Rush anytime soon, because I just saw Satan wearing a fur coat.

We have a President
that can't seem to take serious ANY topic or problem. So basically, adding in that hmm, let's be kind, less than intelligent VP we have, the entire political left is one big joke.

The MT Suit Really Did Fit!

Slick, too. Right off the Bill Clinton rack.
...........................................................................

The country's on the brink of disaster, of course, but who cares about that? Not the liberal press. Not the Hollywood left. No way.

And how bout Obama's new best buds. Wanda and Jeanine! Ain't they a hole in the boat? Maybe Ayers and Wright could start fist bumping with Obama once again, too. One big, crazy, left-wing happy family. But who cares?

The flawless president
I'd like to know what states the new president plans to have join our nation to make 56 as he stated in his campaign. Maybe Libya?, Venezuela?, Iran?, Cuba?, ... any suggestions anyone? His ignorance of a fourth grade level fact isn't really funny, but it could easily be made a joking point.

oblivious on the left
Of my many Democratic friends, relatives and acquaintances, they all seem to be oblivious of any faults except where Conservatives are concerned. I find it difficult to accept their blind acceptance that Obamanomics is any thing but good for the country. Anything Conservative, be it Republican or Libertarian (my party) is held as proof of lesser mentality. Sometimes it is very difficult to be civil in the face of such negation, although most of them have no compunctions about civility.

Ramirez is having a field day

Obama isn't funny
the same way watching your mother die isn't funny. He's the disease that will eventually choke the life out of America.

Amen Greg
Amen.
