The Only Way for Republicans to Win

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

During the recent election season pundits talked constantly about how the deck was stacked against Republicans. They suffered the misfortune of having as their party head an extremely unpopular President, they were defending more Senate seats than the Democrats, and the top issue in the election ended up being the economy rather than national security which traditionally benefits Republicans. Conventional wisdom was that even with outstanding candidates and unlimited money this would be a hard year for Republicans to win.

I guess I have never been big on conventional wisdom. Instead of the glass half empty view of the election, I saw some opportunities arise for Republicans. There is no doubt the Democrats had the upper hand, but there were some things within the control of Republicans that might have led to success if the candidates and the party had used them effectively.

The Democrats nominated arguably the most liberal candidate ever to run for President, and that candidate had a lack of experience and a long list of questionable acquaintances (from Ayers to Wright to Rezko) in his background.

The event most attribute Democrat success to -- the meltdown at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the sub-prime mortgage mess -- could have been tied to the Democrats considering the connections of Obama advisors like Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines, and with video evidence of high ranking congressional Democrats like Barney Frank thwarting efforts to reign in Fannie and Freddie. To top that off Republicans were handed a Mark Foley-like October Surprise when the man who defeated Foley two years ago, following the revelations of inappropriate instant message conversations with pages, was caught in a sex scandal of his own. The scandal surrounding Congressman Mahoney involved mistresses and hush money from campaign (and possibly even taxpayer) funds.

The media were more interested in making sure the public knew about the sex life of Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter and the cost of her campaign wardrobe than they were in Barack Obama’s ties to a domestic terrorist or how much money his advisors received from Fannie/Freddie. They were not interested in reporting how Obama talked one day about Iran being a tiny country that posed no threat to the United States and on the following day talked about how Iran was a grave and serious threat. There were much more pressing matters to report – like how Sarah Palin tried to ban Harry Potter (before it had even been written).

A project called HowObamaWasElected.com provides evidence of the shoddy job the American news media did educating the electorate. As part of the project, those who voted for Obama were asked questions about their knowledge of facts and issues related to the campaign. Some of the answers were shocking, but they helped explain a lot.

I wondered why the Congress controlled by the Democrats for the past two years was not suffering the wrath of voters’ intent on “throwing the bums out.” It wasn’t because the public loved the job they were doing. The approval numbers for the Congress have consistently been lower than that of President Bush, sometimes dipping close to single digits. But those interviewed on camera by HowObamaWasElected.com overwhelmingly believed the Republicans controlled Congress. I guess the voters’ intention was to throw the bums out of Congress after all – they just didn’t realize which bums were in charge. I guess they missed all those network news reports on the record low approval ratings for the Democrat Congress.

Media bias is nothing new. Although it reached new levels this election, it is not entirely to blame for losing so badly. No Republican has won national election in my lifetime because the media were on their side. It has always been necessary for Republicans to take their case directly to the people. With the rise of the DVR, which makes it possible for television viewers to fast forward through commercials, the best time for them to do this is during widely televised, unedited events -- particularly the party convention and the debates.

Republicans made good use of their convention, but in the debates, John McCain did not effectively challenge Barack Obama’s assertion that all the problems with mortgages and the market were due to George Bush’s economic policies. You can’t sit by and let your opponent repeat something again and again without calling them on it, then try to come back later and make the case that what they said was wrong. When you allow your opponent to spread misinformation about the issue voters rank as number one, you seal your defeat.

There is a debate raging on the right about what is more to blame – the message or the media. Republicans were not able to effectively get their message through to the voters because the media was so busy working for the Obama campaign. What made things worse, though, is that Republicans never really articulated a coherent overall message and some Republicans did not hold positions different enough from their Democrat opponents to provide an alternative message. The only message that has ever won nationally for Republicans is an unapologetically conservative one.

When John McCain rushed back to Washington to jump on the massive bailout bandwagon it became hard for him to argue that his approach to the problem would be significantly different than that of Barack Obama and impossible to argue that his was a conservative solution.

If Republicans hope to have any chance to win in 2010 and 2012 they will have to find more effective ways to combat the liberal bias in the media, but even more important they need to decide what they stand for and then to stand firm. Since country is the music preferred by many in the red states, I’ll borrow a line from a song by Van Zandt:

“…Stick to your guns, if you believe in something, no matter what, ‘cause it’s better to be hated for who you are than be loved for who you’re not.”

Currently Barack Obama is being loved for who he’s not and it’s working out pretty well for him, but if he continues down that road and governs as someone voters don’t recognize, he may pay for it later.

Republicans are afraid of being hated for being conservative, so many have gone the “moderate” route, with poor electoral results. If they would stand solidly for conservative principles and policies voters might actually learn what conservatism really is, rather than the stereotypes they have in their heads. Maybe they would even win a few elections along the way.

head in the clouds
The article is spot on when it comes to the notion that people love obama for what he's not. don't try to tell me different because I know alot people that voted for this guy and they ( every single one) can't name a single substantive reason why they voted for him. I know that most of you know this already-even you liberals- The aura will change. presception and reality frequently conflict and the media can only cover for somebody for so long. For your consideration, The Dems own this enconomy now. It will be hard, but not impossible, to keep the american people clueless as to actually runs the congress. On the good side though. The war will be betrayed in a better light by the press ( I have always maintained that the was would have been presented differently if a dem was president and this election proves it). I want us to win and don't give a jimmy if there happens to be a dem in charge when we do. Its just sad that there were so many people on the other side who were will to throw away our security for political purposes.

America is suffering
America is suffering unlawful deception from the Alinsky group.
Group u$urp$ power on January 20th—the constitution violated.
The United States Supreme Court alone can relieve this outrage.

Thank God for Lori Byrd
Byrd's help to understand the election was very informative and better than anything else I've seen. Right on. Now if we could just get a few of the limp-wristed, spineless "Republicans" to think like Lori Byrd and Sarah Palin, maybe we could start the ball rolling.

Half of the Answer, Knowing Our Needs
I asked a young Philippine gal what is the most important lessen that you have learned from your own culture? Without hesitation she answered, “my grandmother taught me, ’If you do not know where you are coming from you could wind-up almost anywhere but where you really want to be.’” Knowing were we come form is like a deep root, or a reliable foundation, good values, noble challenges and faith in God and the courage to live as we ought to live.”

I saw in the past primaries, and the general election two distinct stories. The candidate that got pounded the most was the one that they feared the most in the primaries. The one that was feared the least lost and the one the most controversial won. The one that was elected was the one who upheld the message of hope, while the others lost because they offered hard work accountable and Government social responsibility, which left us with little hope, judging from the past records.

If voters cannot connect the dots between the candidate, the cause and their ability to get there, there is little hope for being elected. GOP candidates must first of all be honest, respectful, unbiased and trustworthy. Second they must have a track record of success, in their personal life and public life. Next, no tricks or trick questions will ever make the end be justified by the means. Tricks destroy the trust and confidence of everyone, and more so for those within our own ranks, for using dishonest means to an end. Lastly, know where you are coming from so that the massage does not get tainted by anyone, because it is consistent, and not full of any “if’s and’s, but’s or maybe’s.” Nothing kills trust more quickly and completely than uncertainties. “Trust and confidence are easily squandered and hard to regain.” --SB, “Lies”

Love the truth, live in the truth, serve with the truth and nothing but the truth. Avoid safe opinions, uncertain truths, and inconsistencies, then American can win free of political partisanship.

Why do you think I was trying to be satirical? No way. I was trying to distill the views of TH readers I see every day into a few straightforward (much more up front than most of them dare to be) propositions. You're a prime example of what I mean, with your stylized rightwing redneck illiteracy and your belief that you're so cool because you can shove words together to create what you imagine to be an insult. (homomarriage? how clever).

Also, "gestell" is a word, not a name. Think about that.

First thing to do
Let's nominate an actual Republican next time.

ROWLY ...NOT A TURKEY!
SEE HOW I STICK UP FOR MY FRIENDS, ROWLY!
HOW HAVE YOU BEEN?
HEY ROWLY, YOU MENTION STUPID, THAT IS THE AMERICAN WAY AS OF LATELY !
MOST VOTERS DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TURKEY AND A VULTURE!
LETS GET RID OF THE PRIMARIES...NOMINATING
SYSTEM!
ELVIS

Palin And The Turkey
Sarah Palin is like most of us who know you cannot eat turkey without first killing it. Only Democrats are that dumb.

These PETA types make me ill. I'll bet they all wear leather shoes, wear leather belts, etc. Never once thinking where the leather came from. Stupid people.

Mark, Palin Was Obviously Set Up
Yeah, right Mark. Governor Palin said, "fetch a couple more turkeys to slaughter for the background action. We need something lively, you betcha'."

Obviously this was a set-up to make her look bad, but it didn't. We all know where turkeys come from, and we're looking forward to them with cranberry sauce this Thursday.

Obama's simple message
The results of the November elections were not difficult to predict given the appalling political ignorance of the American electorate. Obama realized early on that his election would depend on the incessant repetition of a simple-minded message to a combination of his base and the appallingly uninformed or misinformed "independent" voters who held the key to the election. The centerpiece of this strategy was the ubiquitous "Change" mantra which appeared as a backdrop to every Obama, Biden and Democrat campaign appearance. Few Obama voters knew much if anything about Obama's record or policy positions beyond that general mantra.

For many voters, the only issue was that Obama was not Bush, or a candidate with the same brand. McCain's maverick status ultimately made little difference in the end to an electorate which identified him with the same brand as the incumbent.

As the American National Election Study and the Social Capital Survey have revealed, strong Republicans have a significantly higher level of political knowledge than strong Democrats (the same holds true with independent and weak members of both parties).
George Mason law professor Ilya Somin has estimated that it amounts to the equivalent of several years of formal education. Ziegler's recent findings reveal that Obama voters were far better informed about trivial issues regarding McCain and Palin (e.g. Palin's clothes) than about the negative aspects of their own candidate. Most thought Republicans controlled the Congress. His findings are more than anecdotal, but part of a broader pattern of political ignorance of Democratic voters which was only exacerbated by a hyper-biased MSM. Those same surveys reveal that independent voters are the most ignorant of any category by a wide margin.

It’s clear from independent and scientific surveys that the Democrats are the “stupid party.” It is essential that we make the renewal of civic education a priority in the U.S.

Palin and the Turkey
Sarah Palin pardoned one turkey and rambled on and on as two others got the axe just behind and to the side of her.

Put the cameras on her and she blacks out!! The McCain people were right to try and limit her access to the press.

Get Rid of the GOP
Say NO to both socialist parties. Say NO to both big-government parties. Say NO to both bailout parties. Say NO to both corrupt lobbyist parties. Say NO to both race/identity parties. Say NO to both tax-borrow-and-spend parties. Say NO to the ONE warmonger party - say NO to the GOP.

3 Basic Ingredients For Conservatism
Ronaldus Magnus explained that conservatism has three basic qualities, and he talked about it being a three-legged stool.

The first leg of the stool was moral conservatism, and the belief that America IS one nation under God and that we like it that way. Notice that liberals don't worry about having a lack of morals or if something is right or wrong (gays, abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, lies, treason, voter fraud, etc.).

The second leg of the stool is fiscal conservatism; the government doesn't have a "right" to taxes, and the less government interferance in our lives the better. Ronaldus said that the government should work beside the people, not riding the peoples' backs. Notice that liberals see nothing wrong with "spreading the wealth" around and taking from the producers to give to non-producers, that government is the nanny who will "take care of us."

The third leg is national security, at all costs. Liberals think America deserves to be yanked down from it's high horse.

McCain the lousy candidate--for Ali
It isn't that McCain "could have clobbered" Obama in the debates. The little I watched of the debates showed McCain with a grasp of detail and fact and Obama mouthing "change, change, change" and other vague platitudes. I thought then and there that McCain was clobbering the Golden Boy Orator from the City of Stinky Onions, yet our biased major media declared Obama the winner!

Another thing we should do is organize conservative lawyers and advocates to start challenging everything the Obama government might do. If there's a hate speech law, start bringing suit against civil rights activists who call New York "Hymietown" before they have a chance to apologize and pick on immigrant mullahs who whine about the JOOOOOOZ. If they start trying to muzzle talk radio with the fairness doctrine, prepare some major First Amendment suits; and, if they fail, picket, protest, and shut down Washington from time to time.

McCain was a lousy
candidate. He should have clobbered Obama during the debates regarding the Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, etc., but he fought with one hand tied behind his back. He also should have opposed the bailout. He should have clearly articulated that Democratic policies were responsible for the economic downturn and have mentioned Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.

Sig reply 83
You are right. Cool calm coordinated action by large numbers of committed people prevail.
Large numbers of wild, vicious, vengeful mobs do not. A silent protest of 5000 has more power than 100000 raging luncatics. At least in a civilized country. You choose which group you would prefer to have your picture taken.

Robert: Conservatism Wins Landslides-
Since spelling matters so much...

It's a PROVEN fact that conservatism wins elections in landslides. Ronaldus Magnus did it twice in a row. Look at how much excitement Sarah Palin generated; we know a conservative when we see one. McCain wasn't a conservative, although he was pro-life. Look at how many times over the years McCain walked across the aisle? Conservatives don't negotiate their principles away in order to be liked and to get along with those who are just plain wrong. When you know you're right, you stick to your guns. Huckabee is just like McCain, only he has a better personality. Huckabee is only a moral conservative, not a fiscal conservative, which means he'd lose. By 2012 America will need a fiscal conservative to pick up the pieces and put America back together. Obama's going to make a mess, and obviously the markets agree; the market is experiencing money being pulled out by people who don't want their meager life savings spread around to the non-producers.

Palin-Jindal or Jindal-Palin in 2012!

recycle the blame game
Your statement- "evidence of the shoddy job the American news media did educating the electorate." is an assumption that I and many others do not buy into. The job of your party is to educate the electorate. If the candidates cannot make the case in those numerous debates, how can you blame 'the media'. Well because the message was not working for the people. So many of the articles that appear within the web blogs are based upon contrived assumptions that are designed to support a foregone conclusions.
Which brings me to - this article could have been written two weeks before the election - every paragraph is old, yellowed, and unbecoming a Republican, much less a writer.

The joy of being an INDEPENDENT!
It is time to stop debating about what went wrong with the Republican Party in this year's election. We already know. John McCain did NOT stand up for himself or for Conservatives. He's a nice man, who is well respected for his service to this country. But, he didn't speak for Conservatives. It's that simple.
I WILL NOT change my beliefs or my ethics in order to WIN and election. The Democratic Party, along with the majority of the media DID, and have lost a great deal of respect for doing so.
I learned many things from the Democratic Party this election.
I learned of the hatred and anger that I'd never seen before.
I learned that I can't afford to listen to CNN. IF this country was in imminent danger, I believe CNN would hold the story back if it didn't reflect well on their 'candidate'. I 'blocked' them from my set. They will not keep America safe.
I learned that illegals, ex-convicts and dead people can still vote in my country.
I learned that I will NEVER speak to a Democratic candidate when he comes walking down my street. Joe the Plumber asked a simple question when Mr. Obama APPROACHED HIM, and his life was illegally and immorally turned upside down.
I learned that, in order to WIN, Democrats accepted the total lack of disclosure by their ‘candidate’. They won’t understand the seriousness of this until four years from now, when ANYONE from ANYWHERE runs for the highest office in this land and refuses to disclose ANYTHING about themselves. The Democrats can say nothing or make any demands. They set the precedent.
I learned that few women will run for any Federal Government office. The attempted destruction of Sarah Palin will never be forgotten, regardless of party.
I learned that MY rights mean nothing to Mr. Obama. My preference for radio and TV stations could well be banned. Democrats should give this a great deal of thought.
I learned that empty promises and broken dreams are accepted by the PARTY.

Lolo 1
If he had run back and voted against it,he would have fared better.

Pizza Guy

"Republicans wimped out
My personal opinion is that when the stock market went down and Senator McCain went to Washington to participate in the bailout instead of campaigning why he should be President it was game over. The Republicans need to develop a mental attitude on going conservative and take an attitude that the media can hate them for their beliefs but they will not wimp out to the liberal media no matter what. Like Superman taking bullets it doesn't hurt him unless they are loaded with Kryptonite. Sarah Palin haters take note. Her anthem is the Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive.""

Pizza Guy I think you are correct. To me McCain just looked panicked when he suspended his campaign and ran back to DC. I knew it was over. People do not like panicky presidents no matter what side of the aisle you are on.

Lifeside
What suprised me is that people could actually spell isle. I'll leave it at that :)

How To Win Elections
No more compromising!!! If you are a moderate, you are not conservative. There are some things a conservative cannot compromise on and stay conservative.

If they claim to be a moderate, they will vote Democrat when push comes to shove. We do not want them in our party. They have compromised.

As a rule, Independents are conservatives and vote independent because a conservative is not running as a true conservative. They would come back to us if we go back to our roots.IMHO.

Republicans need
ALL REAL CONSERVATIVES WHO CAMPAIGN LIKE REAL CONSERVATIVES AND GOVERN LIKE REAL CONSERVATIVES, VOTING ONLY FOR CONSERVATIVE BILLS AND VOTING AGAINST LIBERAL ONES.

Democrats in open-primary states nominated McCain, not Republican voters. That is why
there should be a national primary election daym and all primaries should be closed.

McCain: The next time you cross the aisle, take Specter with you and stay there!!!

Obama's IQ is 123, and Sarah Palin's is 138.

brilliant young minds
I'd like to see some brilliant young minds get together and non-violently counter every one of Alinsky's rules. Form a tight solidarity and beat all the libs at their own game. We'll have some saints with mohawks, noserings, and tatoos. I'm convinced it will be the young people who take this country back. They are fed up with their brothers and sisters being aborted, divorces, remarriages, violence. All of their life rights being taken from them. They desire a good family life for themselves and their future spouses. The MSM and politicians tries to take their hope away from them in a slick, marxist package. They'll rise up, they will be smart about it. It will work, because they will know every one of Alinsky/Ayer's rules and figure a way to counter. I'm just saying.

School reform
It is not possible to elect any school board that has an agenda of academic excellence. We won a battle here and there, but lost the War. It's over. The teachers will not focus on academics, won't teach history or English grammar or civics, and the union uses all its money and clout to stave off any reform. In CO, the union brought in the left wing People for the American Way to run ads and man the phones for the candidates who talked only of diversity and inclusion, and who denigrated academics.
As a former teacher, I can assure you that public schools are a disaster. Look at the international tests and see how the US has fallen. BTW, Obama's brand of school reform was to shove socialism into all the schools and stack them with radical leftists. I worked against the Annenberg School Reform in the 1990's.

Voter Fraud
Let's not forget all the work of ACORD and the number of illegal ballots either through ineligible registration, people voting multiple times, shipping people in from other states and countries, turning in ballots from old people's homes who didn't know who they were voting for, etc. The list goes on and on.

Without the voter fraud and the MSM, the republicans would win every time and the dems know it. That's why they have to cheat to win.

Once again:
School is local........remember?
There are SCHOOL BOARDS.

IF you don't like what is being taught in school, get off your lazzzzzzzzzy butt and run for the school board.

This is what I mean....all this whining.....this liberalism......is just so old from people who are "wannabe" conservatives.
Either walk the walk, or stop talking. THAT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY.

Ronald
You nailed it. Same things I have been writing here in TH threads. The liberal profs out there probably comprise 80% of the tenured profs polluting minds in America.

It's funny, I seems kids today will not question the second line of authority, their teachers.

I would love to have a go with some of these revisionist American history teachers of today. They are fools and non-creative brainiacs who could never contribute effectively to the private sector - so they stay in school their whole life.

A total joke.

An Action Plan
With the posts of fuzz-ems and kbTexan in mind: Liberals have dominated our schools and dumbed down our students, K-Grad level, for 40 years - a generation. Think of Ward Churchill, Ayers, Dohrn, the NEA, elementary, middle, high school and college teachers teaching politics and revised history rather than their subject matter, sex ed to Kindergarteners, and the practices of Islam.
Consequently we approached gradually in 2000, 2004 to 2006 and now 2008 a tipping point as dumbed down, Liberal-influenced students aged to a majority vote for Liberals and Obama.
Expect more of the same unless this evil influence is overcome with mandatory education to counter the Liberal influence. The remedial ed courses need to include: reading with comprehension to recognize lies and propaganda, logical reasoning vs. emoting and false assumptions, real vs. revised history, civics emphasizing recognition of election fraud, the ethics of intolerance of the intolerant and common cause/unity over diversity and divisiveness, and competitive sports teaching fairness over pyrrhic victory.
We must do something. We can’t just sit here and hope for change like the Liberal ostriches -heads in the sand, butts high in the air, waiting for what comes next.

David has it right.
People are tired of the deception of the RINO party. Please do not associate the RINO with Republican. They are about as close as a Democrat and a Republican.

I am an old Republican. I have let you young folks have a chance, but you have blown it totally. Time for us old fellers to get together and kick all the whining, idiotic RINO's out. The actions of the past 8 years have spoken volumes. Need I say more?

It's a shame....
that in a nation of 300 million or so citizens, McCain and Hussein were the best we could do.

The seven, or was it ten, political dwarfs who ran in the Rep primary were not conservatives or ran ineffective campaigns. McCain is a fine, principled person, but he is no conservative. And he failed to get down and dirty in the trenches against Hussein. He sold out the conservativesbecause of his ego--he had rather be liked by the Dims than to save the country from the insanity that we will experience under the Dims. McCain survived the Rep primary only because he had learned in Hanoi to prevail through prolonged torture, and campaigning for pres these days is surely torture. But personal courage is not the sole qualification for being pres.

The only Rep who could have won against Hussein is Newt Gingrich. Too much baggage, you say. Balderdash! Hussein is towing hundreds of freight cars of baggage.

Newt has the intellect, the ideas, the solutions and the ability to state them in language even the most rabid Hussein supporter could understand. Not that they tried to understand anything, of course.

Brickhouse - get a sense of humor
Regarding my post (it's aisle, stupid), please notice the smiley face at the end of the original post.

SteveL How is the straw poll going?
"So here's my challenge to the GOP base: Is Rudy Giuliani welcome in your party? Would you support him as a candidate for President?"

Not a whole lot of support showing up for Rudy.
My question remains: Is it possible for ANY pro-choice conservative to be a member in good standing with the GOP, much less be supported for elected office? I don't think Lincoln himself would be welcomed.

The Entire Machinery of Society
The entire machinery of Society is against the GOP. I really don't see much hope. The liberal establishment controls the media, the schools, colleges, Hollywood, pop culture and on and on. The GOP is like Mr. Rogers in the sweater crying out for someone to pay attention to him.
If we wish to exist, we need to realize the rules of changed. We need to stop pandering to their rules by trying to be "above it all". We should have called them on the carpet when they put in Gwen Ifill as a moderator. Sorry, she violated ethical considerations. Not fair. McCain should have canceled the debate until a neutral moderator was found. (I am not saying she didn't do a decent job, but is about the principle of us constantly having to accept them breaking the rules).
The media has flat out stated that they are an agent of the Left Wing. So, we need our own journalists, our own schools, etc. It isnt' going to happen over night.
Parents, it has to start with you. Stop sending your kids to institutions of Liberal learning. Send your kids to colleges that represent your values, not the worlds. We have just done nothing and stood by while our country was taken away from us.

Cabinet choices
The way for conservatives to win would appear to let the Democrats have the WH for a while. The Republicans do such a terrible job that voters forget how much worse the Dems are. So we need an LBJ or Peanut Jimmie to bring back the 15 per cent mortgage rates, the stagflation and malaise, the high unemployment. Obama has made a jump start on his return to Democrat normal. Apparently his idea of change is to re-install the left wing power structure of the 90's. Some change. He starts with Holder as Attorney General, Holder the man who signed off on Marc Rich's pardon. The Marc Rich pardon was possibly the most odious example of influence peddling in the final days of Slick Willie's administration. Now Hillary for Sec of State. Now there is a brand new face of change. I've already heard some dismayed remarks from dewey-eyed Obama believers. They won't be the last. Identity voters elected JFK and Carter and soon regretted it. Obama is off to a great start on the same path.

To KbTexan and Robert
In a spirit of liberal political correctness and not wanting to make the under achievers feel put upon, let's compromise.
Example: "John McCain is known for crossing the I'll"

Blame Complacent Conservative Americans!
America was passionate about winning the war in the 40's against communism. They were protesting the war in Viet Nam in the 60s. They were passionate about the war after 911 but became apathetic because of the money and the conflict of terrorism vs. oil. In the 80,s and 90s, there was lots of money so they didn't pay much attention when Clinton signed NAFTA into law and outsourced our jobs or attempted to sell the Long Beach port to the communist Chinese. They didn't pay attention when we sent billions to Russia and sold arms to China, Russia and the Middle East. But,Americans did pay a lot of attention to his affairs and were Clintontized. They didn't pay attention to the downsizing of our military defense department and budget when tons of people lost jobs and homes. Americans didn't pay attention to the Patriot Act that denies our freedoms or the strong political militant gay agenda that's well funded and supported by the Clintons and are now Obamatized as well as Clintontized. So, the country became apathetic for two decades while the Islamic nations became more aggressive and passionate forcing their agendas on the UK and Netherlands and now the U.S. Today, Americans are complacent and that's why the U.S. Constitution, Article II has been trampled upon and thus far, the U.S Justices haven't heard the case that allows those at the top who are lawyers to violate the law of the land and throw you and me into jail for a traffic ticket. Lawyers Rule The Country!

Republicans wimped out
My personal opinion is that when the stock market went down and Senator McCain went to Washington to participate in the bailout instead of campaigning why he should be President it was game over. Her anthem is the Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive."

The GOP
Please, continue in your delusion that you were "too moderate" to win, that Democrats are to blame for the current economic crisis, that Sarah Palin is THE candidate for 2012, etc. A sure prescription for failure!!

Enjoy your years in the wilderness!

gop win...
People people people..let's stop blaming others for our own faults... lets, get in gear and work with others, otherwise the republicans will become dinosaurs.. there is something pathological here.. in A.A. we would take the first step and look at our own faults.. I know it hurts...

GOP WIN?
THE ONLY WAY FOR THEM TO WIN IS THROW THE COWARDS OUT AND PUT IN SOME FRESH BLOOD.

I believe Lorie's got it!
Now if only the DC Beltway folks could get it.

If Giuliani had been running
instead of McCain, the Republicans would have had a chance in this election. More swing voters voted for Obama and his leftist illuminati platform because they were less than impressed by McCain and Palin.

Republicans Win When Conservative
I am a moral and fiscal conservative. The Republicans have gotten so liveral that most conservatives won't vote for them. I voted for McCain because Palin was on the ticket. If Palin would have been on top of the ticket we would have won.

If the Dems get control of the Senate and Congress there is nobody to blame except the Republicans themselves.

The Republicans want everybody to love them so they won't stand up and fight for what's right. We need Republicans that are morally and fiscally conservative. I don't want to vote for a moderate so keep putting them up there and we will never vote Republicans back into office.

for Robert
Robert writes: "It all gets back to the question of whether or no a pro-choice conservative can be a Republican. Apparently not. Can someone please answer that question?"

Two words: RUDY GIULIANI.

Giuliani is a foreign-policy hawk and a fiscal conservative. But on abortion he's pro-choice.

So here's my challenge to the GOP base: Is Rudy Giuliani welcome in your party? Would you support him as a candidate for President?

Lorie's thinking too hard
The way the average voter reasoned it out was thus:

1. The financial crisis is a catastrophe, walloping my 401(k) and IRA investments.

2. Bush is the President; the buck stops with him.

4. Bush is a Republican; the Republicans supported him all these years.

5. So I'm not voting Republican.

That's it. There was a major financial collapse that happened on Bush's watch. Whenever such a catastrophe happens, that President's party is going to lose the next election.

You want to win elections? Promise to the American people that you will prevent such catastrophes before they happen.

Remove the Moderates from America's Soul
McCain is, was, and will be as long as he is in the Republican party, a nemisis. There was NEVER room for moderates in the conservative factions of this Country. A moderate has absolutely NO backbone for necessity as it applies to the correct direction for America. Why cast a vote for a politician who will, with probability side with someone in a party with whom you disagree. Moderation is for chocolate, ice cream and sex, not honesty, integrity, direction and purity of reasonable family traditions. The conservative party needs "backbone and spine" not hemmoroids from sitting on a fence post.

Republicans Win When Conservative
Lorie's 100% on the mark, Mary of TX is right. Republicans going "moderate" will lose down to single-digit representation, and go the way of the Whigs. Indeed, Republican candidates' amount of conservatism (and maybe with a touch of charisma) is directly related to size of electoral victory. I know, here in MN: Pawlenty & Coleman have done great 'moderate' work in turning this 'moving to red' state back into the 'blue' column!

McCain did NOT generate a winnable coalition until Palin's conservative principles joined into the ticket. But then, regardless of external factors, McCain fell dismally when he squandered her conservative credentials. It didn't help that McCain failed to counter media skewering of her reputation; he should have KNOWN it was coming, and planned!

Fear of Liberals and Al queda
McCain and the moderates are afraid of the liberals criticism so they back away from Conservatism.
Barak Obama said in one of his previous books that he was careful to chose who he hung out with while he was in college. He did not want to be known as an Uncle Tom. Well low and behold in Osama Bin Laden's latest release he says that Barak Obama is carrying the white man's water. Interesting isn't it.

Pamela
That youngster that hot wired the bus was praised by many of the conservatives I know.

The people who tried to get him charged with something were hired by Nagin, a Democrat. His biggest offence was more "les majeste", showing up the Democrats by doing something the Democratic Mayor or his underlings should have ordered done.

To be fair, I'm not sure I'd call Nagin a "liberal. He is a bigger idiot than "Brownie" was.

Gestell! How Refreshing!
Encouraging people to tell the TRUTH about the Dumbolcrap Commieqrs! Didn't think you had it in you girl!

Say, how'd you like the fact that the Anti-homomarriage Ammendments WON EVERYWHERE!

Come to think of it Jest Tell, you are finally AGREEING with ME!
We KNOW something like 70% of America is against Homomarriage and that kind of crap! We KNOW 70% of America is against Shamnesty and the Reconquista.
It sounds like if we follow YOUR advice to tell the TRUTH we will be UNITING with 70% of America.

That WOULD BE a WINNING Strategy wouldn't it!

We see where all that Commieqr "Moderation" GOT us now don't we.

Dam! You actually agree with COULTER on this!

The Big Mick
ps. As satire you ain't worth a dam, Gestell. Too much TRUTH you are in denial of for your pathetic attempt to work. Still POed over the Homomarriage debacle, huh?

Lorraine Bobbit Time part 2
But us comment thread peons? What have WE got to lose? How could we be any more marginalized or less enpowered or even HEARD then NOW!?

DIVORCE em people. Form a New American Conservative Party. Find common ground with the Libertarians, the Constitution and Natural Law Parties. Bring in the Reagan Democrats, the Values Voters.

Ignore the disingenuous warnings of "Whig" and "Bull Moose" and "Know Nothing" from Repubelickem enablers political class Hos.

Who gives a dam? How could THAT be worse than having MACK THE KNIFE CRAMMED DOWN our Resisting Throats??

Let the REPUBELICKEMS go to the wall and the ash heap of history. Let the Robber Barons of the Gilt Bird Cabin Conservative Free GOP become the "Know Nothings."

Stand for OUR Principles and tell the WORLD to go to Hell! What have we got to lose except an abusive spouse?

Lorraine Bobbit time folks. Assuming we can find ONE among the Repubelickems of the Gilt Bird Cabin Conservative Free GOP.

The Big Mick

Who gives a dam WHAT the Repubelickems
"Need" to do to win.

OF COURSE McAin't LOST, he was THE LOSER Candidate!

Go back and read what I was saying on The Big Mick blog here on TH during the Primaries.

This was never about ANYTHING but 2 things.
1. Make SURE No Anti-Amnesty candidate was a choice. 70% of America was AGAINST amnesty and who did the Repubelickems nominate? Mr. Shamnesty himself! IN SPITE OF THE FACT HE WAS an OBVIOUS LOSER against either Hilly or Bammiecommie! What's that TELL you.

The second point was the Anti-Christian Jihad from the Rocky Feeler Gilt Bird Cabin Repubelickems. The intent, with the aid of the inside the belt loop Robber Barons of the Establishment Machine Party Bosses, was to MARGINALIZE Reaganism to extinction!

The Repubelickems have ALWAYS been ABUSIVE SPOUSES to us Reagan Conservatives, WHY STAY IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP?

Now I understand why most of the columnists, think tankers, inside the beltlooper bloggers, Political Class HOS here on TH want to stay in. They are the ENABLERS, they would have to lose their MEAL TICKET!! Not a ball or a handful of guts among em!

Run hard right for authenticity
This is a critical time for conservatives; they have hard choices to make, including drawing the boundary lines around conservatism. The emphasis for the right should be to go to the right, not to accomodate 'reformers' and RINOs, and not to spend too much time navel-gazing.

Suppose that McCain-Palin had really played hardball from day one of the campaign. They should have been throwing voters red meat on Obama. Any fact, any allegation, every possibility to embarass, undermine, and deconstruct Obama should have been taken advantage of. Even Palin was more of a sideshow than anything else--the hot babe candidate who talks funny. McCain-Palin should have been calling Obama a socialist, communist, Marxist, Islamist, friend of terrorists, etc. daily, not just when things got desperate.

Next time forget about tolerance. Name your enemies, publish your enemies list. Stand up against gays, reject all accomodation with moderates or liberals, do all you can to discredit the opposition, make clear that your side and no other is God's side, the American side.

I read TH daily, and I know that most TH readers believe the things I've mentioned. Your party should reflect your beliefs. Then see what happens.

Start where we are......
From reading these posts, it looks like:

Conservatives forget that we can only control ourselves; we cannot control others.

Conservatives forget that life isn't always fair

Here is a good story that shows the difference between conservatives and liberals. Remember, concerning Hurricane Katrina, when that young man in New Orleans commandeered a school bus and drove many older New Orleans residents to the shelter in Houston? In speaking to a co-worker about that, I said that young man needed to be rewarded. My co-worker (the liberal) said that yes, he should get a medal. I said he should be given a college education.

First of all, conservatives need to be shrewd and understand how to say things in such a way that they are speaking truthfully, but maybe not completely.

Second of all, we need to quit being so verbose. It's fine to do that on this website, but most people anymore don't have the desire or the "wait" factor to listen. In fact, they may be intimidated and may feel as if we are condescending.

Third of all, we need to embrace (and I hate to say it) compassion for each individual. We need to quit condemning everyone.

Fourth, we need to listen to what voters want.

Fifth, we need to put all this together into a basket of our principles voiced in good PR.

Fred, part three
I will not defend McCain because you are correct in that HE sucked in the campaign and that rubbed off on the other Republicans. But your childish and churlish attack on Palin will not go unaddressed. I would love to test your and Palin’s IQs to see just who is the idiot. Watch the videos that Byrd referenced at HowObamaWasElected.com. The Obama supporters know little or nothing about their own government. This is not only the liberal media’s fault, but also the fault of liberal teachers who do everything they can to lie about history and the government. Kids today have no idea who runs either house of Congress or which branch of the government is responsible for spending. Let me give you a clue, the answer can be found in article I of the Constitution.
“I'd bet you 100 to 1, that the "elites" in the BLUE states knew who controlled the congress...” another nonsensical statement from you. What does that mean???? Who are these elites I keep hearing about and what does their knowledge of who controls congress have to do with anything?
I cannot decide if you are a mercenary sent here to obfuscate the truth or just another leftist nutcase.

Fred, part two
Please refrain from using a New York Times article to make your point. They were in the tank for Obama. It’s kind of like citing Rush Limbaugh to make a point about democrats.
You are correct in your assertion that McCain is not a POW nor is Obama an 8 year old boy. I am not sure what your point is here, since it is a fact that McCain was once a POW and Obama was once an 8 year old boy.
You write that “the MSM gave McCain the biggest pass of all - ignoring his HUGE foreign policy gaffes…” I can see your point here. Like when he said that the U.S. should attack Pakistan and that "Iran, Cuba, Venezuela — these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us.” No wait a minute that was Obama. This only made news when McCain criticized Obama over it, and then it was treated as unimportant by the media you so love.

Fred, part one
Wow, so much BS and so little time.
Ayers is not a domestic terrorist because he was never convicted???? By this logic none of the men who killed 3000 people on 9/11 were terrorists because they were never convicted. And those fellas off the shore of Somalia aren’t pirates they’re just sailors having fun. Similarly Osama bin Laden is totally innocent. Please at least make a logical argument. Ayers got away with his terrorist acts because the police fouled up and did not get a warrant. Not because he was innocent. Getting away with a crime does mean you are not a criminal! For your information Ted Kaczynski was also a college professor (at UC Berkeley) and is also a terrorist. These are not mutually exclusive occupations. How exactly do you know that “Ayers and Obama had a tenuous connection…”? No one knows much of anything about Obama or his connections, period. That is the point.

Correction (My Bad)
FreeTexas and everybody reading my last post. Please ignore the "lack of quorum" move. I forgot to re-read ARTICLE I; Section 5 of the Constitution. A quorum is a majority of the members of both houses.

Damn it! We are screwed if Norm Coleman looses in the Minnesota recount and Saxby Chambliss looses in the Georgia runoff!

FreeTexas - Post from 10:21 AM EST...
In Congress, neither a Congressman nor a Senator can "vote" present. Now here is what can be done in the event the Democrats get Minnesota and Georgia and thus get a filibuster-proof Senate:

Since a quorum requires 2/3's of the members to be present, the GOP in the Senate should just avoid being in the chamber when controversial votes are taken. Believe me, most - if not all - votes forced by Democrats without GOP input can be defeated without a quorum. The same would hold true in the House.

Now the problem with that is the GOP must educate the public that this is the only way to keep a bill from being passed. Otherwise, the Democrats in 2010 will use their absence against the GOP in an effort to secure an additional 7 seats to have a quorum without the GOP. They will campaign on a platform that "the GOP doesn't do its job," the Republicans aren't working for the people," "Your GOP Senator is sitting out at taxpayers expense," and on and on...

Educate, educate, educate and start before you sit the first vote out!!! Tis better to have a "do-nothing congress" due to a lack of a quorum, than to have the Dem's reimpose the Fairness Doctrine, Raise Taxes, Vote on radically liberal judges, etc. etc.

Solid Conservatives who
Stand by their principles and enunciate them to the general public usually win their elections. Remember Reagan. Stay true to your roots. Candidates who try to move left lose. Candidates who don't emphasize their conservatism lose. Candidates who allow their opponents to talk more conservatively than they lose.

It's a tried and true principle. Do the right thing, no matter what, and remember that at the end of the day, it is better to be right than to be the winner.

Sadly, many politicians forget this. The lesser of two evils rarely wins. You need a positive influence for good to overcome the evil. Bland politicians who are lukewarm across the board cannot fire up anyone. Liberal candidates are no better than the opposition. Conservative candidates win races. Doubt me? Look at Bobby Jindal.

For Brickhouse @ 13:23
I can remember in 1997, the (incorrect) claim by Ron Luntz that Conservative Party(s) had lost in Britain and Canada and Replublicans in US because they could not sell conservatism--where Luntz failed specifically to mention that in the cases of Canada and US, the so-called conservatives were practically indistinguishable from liberals (in fact, Canada's Reform Party in 1993 used the slogan "Liberal, Tory, same old suppository").

And, Canada proved in 2006 that when the Conservative Party actually meant conservative, it would win--Harper became PM that year (albeit of a minority government); again proved this past 10/14, still with a minority as Canada's largest population-wise province morOntario proved both in 2006 and 2008 to be the left-wing deadweight.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE
GIVE OBAMA HIS UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, IN THIS ECONOMY IT WILL FAIL. CONGRESS WILL HAVE TO SAVE THEIR JOBS AFTER IT FAIL IT TOOK NINE MONTHS IN HAWAII, THAT STATE ALREADY HAVE A LOT OF SOCIAL PROGRAMS.THE ECONOMY WOULD GO INTO A DEPRESSION, THE CONSERVATIVES MUST HAVE AN ANSWER TO RUN FOR EACH CONGRESSIONAL SEAT AND ALL STATE SEATS THAT ARE UP IN 2010.BAILOUTS, STIMULUS CHECKS AND WASTE OF OTHER PUBLIC MONIES WILL ALSO WAKE UP CONSERVATIVES.

Libertarians
(READ "liberals who understand economics")are the reason we keep losing. We need TRUE conservative values, ALL of them, social AND economic. We need to stick to them. We must learn from history. We stick to our guns (Regan)we win; we give up either social or economic conservartism (McCain, Nixon, etc.) we lose.

are you kidding?
As long as the GOP thinks its problems are a result of the "liberal media", they have no chance of coming back to power. Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Hydrogen Production Engineer
What I meant by 'they can smell a fraud" is that there is very clear evidence that the GOP were a bunch of used car salesman by election time.

I don't think that a winning strategy is designed around denigrating the voters. Our elections are almost always decided by the least informed. Many of these are perfectly intelligent people who just don't have any interest in politics. Some aren't.

The point I was trying to make is that a party that clearly articulates a philosophy, and then sticks to it, will fare much better, even if they lose a few here and there. The GOP talks one way and then acts in the exact opposite way. That's what I mean by fraud. I expect this of DEMS, but had a higher bar for the GOP.

I'm a fiscal Conservative, and I haven't seen a thing that would attract me to the GOP. I don't expect anything from DEMS on this issue, and am never disappointed. So, there's no dog in this fight for me - maybe next time.

Byrdbrain says:
"I guess the voters’ intention was to throw the bums out of Congress after all – they just didn’t realize which bums were in charge."

You blaming the MEDIA because AMERICANS didn't know who ran the congress - after TWO years? Don't blame the media that we have a country of Sarah Palins - remember - they're the real Americans...

I'd bet you 100 to 1, that the "elites" in the BLUE states knew who controlled the congress...

The Enigma says:
"No, the MSM did not do a shoddy job of educating America on the background and history of the candidates. They performed a hatchet job on the GOP candidates while polishing the false image of the demagogues to an irresistible shine"

Lies to help you sleep at night?

try Xanax instead...

The MSM gave McCain the biggest pass of all - ignoring his HUGE foreign policy gaffes, refusing to explore his connections to thugs like Gordon Liddy and Charles Keating, ignoring his relationship to bigots like Jerry Falwell - the list is endless. Obama - OTOH, had to make a big speech about Wright, the media coverage was so thick...
And Palin? Not only did she hide from the media, but she lied at every turn...

Please - you lost this one because YOU SUCKED...

Byrdbrain is a LIAR....
"The media were more interested in making sure the public knew about the sex life of Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter and the cost of her campaign wardrobe than they were in Barack Obama’s ties to a domestic terrorist or how much money his advisors received from Fannie/Freddie."

Byrdbrain still doesn't get it!

1 - Ayers is not a domestic terrorist - any more than McCain is a POW or Obama an eight-year-old boy - even ignoring the fact that Ayers was NEVER convicted of a SINGLE crime - calling him a domestic terrorist - for actions committed 40 years ago is not just bad journalism - it's a lie. He's a college professor - but idiots like Byrdbrain KNOW that Ayers and Obama had a tenuous connection at best, so they need to RAMP up the rhetoric to keep up the hatred. And the idea that the media ignored the Ayers connection - when the NY Times did a COVER story on that connection weeks before the election - is just another LIE told by LOSERS who can't accept the fact that they LOST. Also, Raines was NEVER an Obama advisor and Johnson left the campaign IMMEDIATELY when his connections were revealed. But Byrd - a second rate blogger and right wing hack, doesn't deal with reality...

2 - the other big lie was regarding Palin's kid. Yes, the left wing blogs took off on that - but the media? Show us the story, Byrdbrain - or STFU!

and as to that wardrobe? That came FROM THE McCain camp...

Thank you Ms. Byrd
Good job showcasing and summarizing the illuminati MSM and the injustices fo the election. I hope this is widely read.

Corruption of the Election Part II
No, the MSM did not do a shoddy job of educating America on the background and history of the candidates. They performed a hatchet job on the GOP candidates while polishing the false image of the demagogues to an irresistible shine; irresistible if you keep your mind at rest and refuse to think for yourself. Sadly, this nation has an over abundance of such lazy, arrogant and STUPID people.

Had the MSM acted responsibly and provided the facts concerning "osama" obama to the American people, they would have destroyed their own efforts, the primary of which was to demonstrate that they not only could, but would determine who was to be the next President of the United States. Again, sadly, enough stupid Americans allowed themselves to be led by the nose to and through the election process to ensure the MSM succeeded.

The MSM has demonstrated that it has become the PRAVDA of the dnc.

Corruption of the Election Part I
. . . the shoddy job the American news media did educating the electorate . . .

This was not a shoddy job, but an intentional corruption of the basic purpose of the media, to educate the public.

Soon after the 2004 dnc convention, the MSM began a detailed and in depth investigation of "osama" obama. The purpose of these investigations, was not to educate the American people, but to develop a plan to buttress any and all challenges should "osama" obama seek a higher office. The MSM had found a negro that they knew could be forced upon the American public as an acceptable candidate, provided the vast array of negative information was not allowed to tarnish his image.

If anyone is naive enough to believe that the MSM was not aware of the connections between "osama" obama and william ayres, reyes, wright, etc, they have been living in a fantasy world. The MSM was well aware of the anti-American and racist rants of "reverend" wright and also aware the "osama" knew of these rants and never raised an objection. Should anyone doubt these statements, one need only look at how quickly the MSM took questions concerning "osama's" relationships and failure to denounce "wright's" racims and anti-Americanism and brushed them aside. Compare that with the viciousness of the MSM attacks against Gov. Palin over leftist generated rumors with NO facts.

How Republicans can win
The Republican Party can regain the position of leadership: if, they demonstrate the dangers of the current entitlement mentality; clearly articulate that our rights come from god not government; dispel the growing perception of “rule by the government;” awaken the ability in the people to think for themselves; put names to those responsible for our failures and most importantly, “dare to lead.”

Republicans
I wrote this a day after the election:
When the playing field is not level and you have an uphill battle on your hands it's easy to see why the GOP lost. McCain has to be given credit for his stalwart fight if not for his brilliance. This against suspiciously out of whack campaign finance situation, a grossly, almost obscenely biased media, serial half-truths and lies from the opposition without effective rebuttals, insufficiently challenged dangerous liaisons and associations, a situation where experience and judgment was not even a serious consideration for most voters but platitudes and outright deception sat well with them, and, of course, the whole race card thing. If I had been in McCain’s position I would have refused to be set up like that…totally, TOTALLY ridiculous!

TIME TO GEAR UP FOR 2010 MID-TERM

....To prepare for the 2010 mid term elections Conservatives should frequent the following sites:

...1. http://www.republicanforareason.com ...this site will allow the exchange of ideas with the RNC and fellow Conservatives ...

...2. http://www.goptrust.com ...this site will allow Conservatives to get involved in current battle sites where Conservative values are under attack ...

...3. http://www.reaganaction.com ...this site will keep Conservatives informed on current events that are important to Conservatives ...

.....If Conservatives want to take our party and our country back we need to organize now and plan ahead ...the time to get to work is now .....COLOSSUS

I have to laugh
at all these posters who claim American voters elected Obama because they're just ignorant.
The same people elected Bush two terms in a row. Are we to believe that voters developed this ignorance in only four years?

Another winning message
would be to unapologetically move to curb illegal immigration -- even if it means sending 20 million fence jumpers packing. The cost would be negligible compared to the long-range cost of letting them stay.

Polls have consistently shown that Americans are sick of law-breaking immigrants jumping ahead of those who abide by the rules.

The media won't tell the truth about the numbers and how much illegal immigration costs our country every year. If people got the whole story, they would be outraged. Republicans could sell this as a "Put America First" or "America for Americans" philosophy and it would sell big time.

Americans are also sick of feeling like they are responsible for rescuing the poor of the entire world while they see their own lifestyle going down the toilet. We need some real men in the GOP instead of these wimpy girly-boys who are afraid of their own shadow.

Democrats in Control
Now that the democrats will be in complete control the republicans must do everything in their power to make sure that the public is well aware of it. Cause no obstruction in DC. Simply vote present for the next 2 years. Let the democrats run it all. Don't protect them from themselves (like they did with Clinton). Give the public what they think they want and let them get it.

Then let's see where we are in two years.

Quantum of ignorance - love that
It does seem as if the Democrats could have run Mickey Mouse this time around and still have won the White House. There is something singularly galling and grating in the hubris of the media illuminati elites who, at the mere flick of a wrist, can send the masses of lemmings (voters) right over a cliff.

The Youth Vote
I have a 15 year son although he is not yet of age to vote we discuss politics and the election. He is in 10th grade Deans List Student, takes A.P. and Honors Classes. H e asked me who I was voting for I told him John Mccain , I told him why I was voting Republican which was based on our beliefs in issues and idealogy. I didnt bash dems or tell him negatives I wanted him to know why- not why not.I didnt want to have him close his mind by me spewing negatives and unproven statements. An example of this our neighbor who is also 15 and in school with my son went around to all their mutual friends spouting that Obama is a Muslim, Obama is a socialists, Obama isnt an american etc etc etc. The kids laughed at him called him ignorant because thats all he could say about why his mother was voting Republican, the kids didnt listen to him he was spewing out negatives he couldnt give them anything other than a bunch of why nots with no merit and the kids knew this. We have to teach our children the whys not take our message away by focusing on the negatives of the other party. We want them to remember why they are voting not why they are not.

but they can smell a fraud a mile away.
Come on now - you can't have it both ways. If "they" could smell a fraud a mile away - Obama could not have won the election; and neither he nor McCain would have even been considered as candidates in the first place. Politicians wouldn't be able to lie with abandon and still get elected - over and over.
American politics is all about the "fraud" and having the American voter swallow the "fraud" without hesitation.
The first thing you have to do is accept the fact that the average American voter is an American Idol/Oprah/Dr.Phil addicted doofus. They believe whatever lie is most widely broadcast and repeated and repeated and repeated.
Teaching Civics is a useless suggestion as well. Civics, as taught today, is an exercise in Liberal Social Engineering. Teach logic, critical thinking and basic research skills; then encourage everyone to excercise a healthy scepticism for ANY politicians pronouncements.
The Republicans need to do seriously more than re-arrange the deck chairs, if they have any hope to salvage their relevance in future politicak jousts.
To date the Republicans haven't provided anything except more of the same.

Dwain Cleveland

Excellent Commentary
and excellent replies.

I don't think that John McCain could have run a worse campaign even if his goal had been to intentionally lose his bid and give the Presidency to BHO for all the reasons Ms. Byrd lists.

I think that it may be time for the conservatives in both parties consider forming a new party and distance themselves from the current brands.

Another thing would be to "equalize" the primary nomination process throughout the Union. Allowing some small states in New England to determine who our party nominee will be is very self defeating. This round we had two choices- liberal lite and Ultra liberal.

Like so many others, I would have stayed home if not for the pick of Sarah Palin.

The nail in the coffin for the GOP is finally the ignorant and misinformed voters in America- which they are also responsible for. Ms. Byrd mentions the website HowObamaWasElected.com and the samples are amazing. The only correct answers given were related to Sarah Palin. These people were only informed by the liberal news media/ liberal comedians.

This is a powerful statement of the strength of the media and the weakness of our public education system. The primary difference between the Roman Republic and the American Republic is that while the Romans were defeated by the Barbarians from abroad, we are being defeated by the Barbarians from within.

God save this country!

QUANTUM OF IGNORANCE

.....Take a Public School Education and filter news through a heavily biased Liberal Media and you end up with an uninformed and ignorant electorate ...to get our message out we need a new approach ...

HOW ABOUT A TV GAME SHOW?

.....We could call it "Are you smarter than a first grader" and have all the questions on American History and Civics ...

.....Have Jay Leno as the host and throw in some clips of "Jaywalking" to amuse the viewers with the ignorance of the average citizen .....COLOSSUS

There's a difference between stupid and uneducated. Stupid is permanent. Uneducated can be remedied. As you will notice, I did not use the word "stupid" in my previous post.

There's nothing wrong with learning to spell correctly. I know many posters are suffering from the disadvantage of a government education. I don't hold that against them. I just try to help when I can.

It's aisle, stupid, not isle!
You must be one of those pointy headed intellectuals I'm always hearing about:)

A lot of what you say makes sense, but I need to modify one of your statements from "Use the Democrats "outward" appeal but keep conservative principles". I'd like to substitute rediscover for keep in the last sentence.

The GOP was not Conservative by any stretch of the imagination. There were no Conservatives in this election. Just a bunch of people jockeying around to try to maintain the power to give out the handouts to their buddies, rather than the other parties friends. Palin the possible exception.

But yeah, new blood, a new face, and new ideas would be helpful.

I also think that Obamas' election is more of an indictment of the GOP than it is of the American voter. People may not be up on all of the latest issues, and there may be a dire need for more Civics training in our schools, but they can smell a fraud a mile away.

It's AISLE, people
If I see one more post where someone is talking about reaching across the isle or walking across the isle, my head will explode.

Isle is an island. There is no island in the Capitol Building. They reach across the aisle, which is the walkway dividing the chamber, and figuratively, the divide between the parties.

OK? Aisle, not isle. My head thanks you.

Keep filling up the Spit Bucket
with peripheral issues (media bias, association with terrorists, bad preachers, Rezco, ballot box theft, etc., etc). You are in denial.

Stay the course and the Republican Party will become redundant (Whigs and Know-Nothings). It all gets back to the question of whether or no a pro-choice conservative can be a Republican. Apparently not. Can someone please answer that question?

A Winning Solution for the GOP in 2012
If the Republican Party wants to retake the White House in 2012 then it has to appeal to the common voter. Who is this "common voter"? He/she votes with his/her heart not with the brain. He/she votes based on the charisma of candidates not content. Youth and minorities vote based on color not character. But the GOP can give the voters all sides if it would "bite the bullet."

Here is the RX for defeat and the solution to victory: Use the Democrats "outward" appeal but keep conservative principles. How would the Republican Party do that? First, remember it is appeal and youth rather than substance that 50 percent of the population looks for.

That being the case, the Republicans should elect African-American Michael Steele as its RNC Chairman. This would put a black into the national GOP leadership.

Then, in the primaries, GOP voters should pull the lever for Bobby Jindle of Louisiana. He would only be 40 years old, would have a proven record of executive leadership and (this is very important) has parents (both) who were born outside of the U.S. In fact, Jindle would qualify for the Presidency by just two months as his mother was seven months pregnant with him when she arrived in this country.

Finally, Jindle should appoint Sarah Palin as his running mate. She will still be under 50, would have six rather than two years of executive leadership and would have spent the previous four years studying up on national and international issues.

What this plan does is LOCK OUT THE WHITE MALE. The GOP is constantly being branded as the party of the rich white male. So, since American voters are now more prone to vote based on looks rather than substance, then throw them a bone. Give them youth, leadership, looks and NO WHITE MALES!! How could the GOP be branded as a racist, sexist, old man's party ever again?

Gop lorie byrd
The GOP needs to focus on the positives of the Repub. Party not focus on bashing and the negatives of the dem party. you want the electorate to understand why you are a Repub., why you stand on issues the way you do. presenting the positives not focusing on the dems and their issues. youre taking away from your message . Jesus led his followers by presenting his positive messages of hope, understanding of christian values, how and why they should follow him.Jesus didnt take away from his message by focusing on the negatives or the anti-christian beliefs. Jesus knew how to lead the people. We need to follow by example and they will listen and understand us and our beliefs not by bashing.

Lorie Byrd...flying high..,
Ms. Byrd,
...you are flying high and correct with your worthy analzsis of the conservative movement! Now only if enough...and the appropriate people... will listen to the sounds of your wings!!

Learn to govern.
Republicans need more than a coherent philosophy. They need to learn how to govern.

Yes
The real "fringe" of the Republican party are the power at any price guys who expect mainstream Republicans to abandon all principles and deeply held beliefs to vote for their trash.

It's not happening.

republican tactics???
Until such time as the RNC is scoured clean of all the losers that are running it, Republican strategies will not change. That won't happen; that being the case the Republican Party is a death issue.
You have to be selling something that someone wants to buy. The Republicans are consistently selling Democrat-Lite and that dog won't hunt for Constitutionist minded voters. Without us - the Republican Party loses elections. It only takes a 3 or 4 percent lose of votes, in one direction or the other, for elections to swing to one side or the other.
I used to be a Republican - unless they get their act together and present a defined difference between themselves and Democrats, I'll stay that way.
There needs to be a political coalition of Libertarian, Independent, Constitutionist, Blue Dog Democrat, and discarded Republican folks who are tired of having to choose the lesser of two evils. All the listed folks have more in common that they do differences. Will it ever happen?? Not if the leaders of these various factions have anything to do with it. These "little" leaders would rather be "in charge" of a losing proposition than be a part of a "winning" coalition. It's one of the great "truths" in life - stupid is as stupid does.

Gop loss
While i agree with everthing lorie says . i do blame the MSM bias for one of the reasons GOP lost seats and the Presidential election if what the electorate is hearing is favorable to one side and the Repubs are made to sound like a bunch of hateful racists gun toting christians and hyprocrites and Dems are the party that cares about the average american. We have to get out the positive messages out to the voters without sounding like the MSM has been playing us to be.Polls were done proving the average voter who voted for obama couldnt answer basis questions about him. also Professor Richard Brake did a study a Civics Literacy Test on average americans and 70%failed,these were basic questions. Instead of us yelling and screaming about how dumb and ignorant voters were and are we need to turn up the positive messages and educate the electorate not by posting some of the comments i have read on Townhall.com they sound more like agame between us and them who can out post the other. I dont see anyone being informed or having a willingness to have an open mind with this kind of behavior.

The media portrays Reps. as religious
fanatics out to plug women's wombs and send your kids to foreign wars no one can explain.

We need some Libertarian infusion, as Ron Paul made so relevant--

Legalize drugs,
End the "no" mantra, as No smoking, No sex, No-NO--and turn them into medical/health issues,
Go Pro--
Pro make up your own mind,
Pro invention,
Pro entrepreneur,
Pro initiative,
Pro conservation (we invented it),
Pro work (even for illegals),
Pro security (Bush failed miserably on explaining Iraq and Afghanistan, as the Big Bro O looks to do),
Pro keeping your own earnings (slash taxes),

so that we frame issues in positive terms and are forward looking.

Bush' owndership society is really the way to go because the New Deal-New Frontier New Whatever is sinking us in unfunded mandate debt that is insupportable.

We cannot pay for Soc. Sec. and Medicare and the idea that we can assume all healthcare by the gov't is absurd to the point of insanity.

But we need to focus on less what's wrong than what Reps. can do right. Even the values Reps. will have to give up the Thous Shalt Not's for the Thou Shalts.

And if we can't get around the MSM, the NRC should buy ITS OWN CABLE PROGRAM AND RUN *GOOD* NEWS 24/7.

LET'S STOP BEING THE PARTY OF THE NO'S AND BE THE PARTY OF THE GO'S!

We Need to Find Some Republicans
We need candidates who are willing to stand up for conservative values and I don't think there are many in the current Congress. McCain predictibly took the class warfare approach on the mortgage crisis and blamed it on 'Wall Street greed' instead of 'Washington incompetence and liberal politics' which is where it provably belonged.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for stupid and that is what most of the voters are.

The NEW MANTRA Should Be;
WE HAD A GREAT ECONOMY UNTIL THE DEMOCRATS TOOK CONTROL OF THE HOUSE AND SENATE on JAN. 20, 2007..

Nine months later the Stock Market started its Downward Descent.

Why is everyone talking about 2012
Are we so discouraged that we are skipping 2010? We can make some in roads in the house in two years. WE need to get off our pity trip and work to get our message out and start a campaign against current dem house members by just pointing out their votes on a monthly basis. Stop being appeasers and start displaying their faults now instead of two weeks before the election. In other words be in election mode all the time

When We Lost
This election was lost years ago when the leadership in the House of Representatives chose to go along with the big government policies of George Bush. The economic meltdown is a result of government creating money out of thin air and then giving the money to people with no means of paying it back. Not fighting this type of action tooth and nail exposed Republicans for who they really are.

McCain was a terrible candidate but no different than the others we have put up in recent years. If you govern like mush and nominate mush do not be surprised what ends up in your bowl after the election.

Obama did not win Ohio
With half a billion dollars running his campaign, Obama actually got 40,000 less votes than Kerry in Ohio. Unfortunately/fortunately, McCain claimed 300,000 less votes than Bush. Seems the silient majority remained silent on Nov. 4.

I would have stayed home if Palin wasn't the VP pick.

The problem with McCain was his strategists couldn't figure out why anyone should vote for him. It was rumored that McCain couldn't tell his campaign managers why he wanted to be president.

Exactly. In addition,.......
get some really great people to run the campaign. There were times I was disappointed, grieved, astounded, and embarassed about how the McCain campaign was run. Bad strategy and the poor substance you mentioned didn't help. But in the long run, we were outdone by the Obama campaign tactics.

Had you all heard about Obama's writing a letter to each federal government worker (excluding DOD) about how he would improve their particular department? That's how he won Virginia!

Maybe the power of suggestion was too powerful for McCain, but his campaign was definitely erratic, just like Obama said.

Mary
I think you're correct.

Most of the post-election pieces I've been reading are basically exhorting the GOP to be more aggressive towards DEMS, lamenting the media bias, etc.

To pick one subject the author mentions, the mortgage (now overall economic) crisis.

She seems to think it would have helped to aggressively tar DEMS with FM and FM, but I disagree.

The fact is, most don't know who the FMs are, and would have treated this issue as just more noise coming from the campaign.

Many know that GWB and the GOP congress were spending money like there's no tomorrow, and more than a few realized tomorrow has actually arrived.

Many know there was a lot of very legal fraud being perpetrated, and that the GWB admin not only turned a blind eye, they actually aided and abetted it.

The "chickens came home", as our Prez-elects Spiritual Advisor likes to say, and they roosted right on top of the GOP nest. And this is exactly where they belonged.

This election was lost, not by the inability of the GOP to market their brand, but because too many people saw very clearly what that brand was, and turned away in disgust.

The GOP will start winning again when they have something valid to say, and when (or if) they ever regain enough credibility with people.

500 million $$$
That's how much more the DNC spent and it was not a very large win. AND WE HAD A BORN LOSER RUNNING FOR US. I got an idea, let's make it mandatory that all GOPers stay in their own district and cast votes over the internet. Also, when they simply must go to D.C., ban them from going to ANY dinner parties w/ K. Parker and other psuedo cons.

Conservatism Wins Landslides-
It's a PROVEN fact that conservatism wins elections in landslides. Ronaldus Magnus did it twice in a row. Look at how much excitement Sarah Palin generated; we know a conservative when we see one. McCain wasn't a conservative, although he was pro-life. Look at how many times over the years McCain walked across the isle? Conservatives don't negotiate their principles away in order to be liked and to get along with those who are just plain wrong. When you know you're right, you stick to your guns. Huckabee is just like McCain, only he has a better personality.

Palin-Jindal or Jindal-Palin in 2012!

stay the course
I think the GOP should continue in this vein. It is an excellent strategy if the goal is to reduce the number of Republican votes to single digits in the 2012 election. Outstanding tactic...!

Please carry on.
