Why are so many Republicans freaking out about John McCain’s primary success?

Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

I’ve given quite a bit of thought to that question this week because I happen to be one of those freaking out over the prospect of a McCain nomination.

Some cite McCain’s positions and past votes and say he is on the wrong side of too many issues, but the same can be said of George Bush. Why does McCain seem to ignite such emotion and strong opposition in so many? There are a lot of positions McCain has taken that have angered conservatives, to be sure. Opposition to the Bush tax cuts, McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform, Gang of 14, the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill, global warming and drilling in ANWR are just a few.

The strong negative reaction from conservatives is not solely because of his positions on issues, though. The reason so many conservatives are concerned about the prospect of a McCain nomination and a McCain presidency has almost as much to do with the way McCain has taken the positions he has, as the positions themselves.

As I often tell my children when they get in trouble for talking back or giving me attitude, sometimes it is not what you say, but rather how you say it.

I was not happy about McCain’s opposition to the Bush tax cuts. As disappointed as I was with his vote, though, what really angered me was the "tax cuts for the rich" rhetoric he used to explain his opposition. I think it is horrible when Democrats play that class warfare game, but realize that many of them actually believe it and even those who don’t believe it know they need to say it because that is what their base wants to hear. It was hard for me to imagine any reason a true conservative would want to say such things. I still can't.

For many years McCain has displayed what appears to be a need for the love and acceptance of the media and Democrats. He often seemed to go out of his way to find fault with those in his own party in order to further cultivate his maverick persona. Instead of being a representative of the Republican party, or even of conservatism, he often emphasized his differences with others in the party and the movement, or allowed those in the media to do so for him.

I suspect many of those “freaking out” about McCain being the standard bearer for the Republican party have gone through the same progression I have over the past year.

McCain has been working hard for a year or so now to assure conservatives that he is one of them. His strong support for the war effort and the surge went a long way in making that case. He also softened his rhetoric against those in his own party. Over the summer I forgot many of the reasons I had opposed McCain as a presidential candidate. When he was down in the polls and did not appear likely to have a shot at the nomination, it was easy to forgive and forget.

When McCain started winning primaries and took the lead in the national polls, though, some of those reasons for my original opposition starting seeping back into my memory.

One of my earliest recollections of a negative reaction to McCain was in 2000 over what appeared to me to be a meltdown in South Carolina over “dirty tricks.” In 2000, going into the South Carolina primary, McCain ran a television ad accusing George Bush of “twisting the truth like Clinton,” while at the same time complaining about negative campaign tactics. I couldn't help but wonder how he would react to criticism and dirty campaign tactics from Democrats in a general election.

Comparing a fellow Republican to Bill Clinton back in 2000, knowing there was a good possibility that candidate would end up being the nominee and Democrats could use those words to discredit him, did not sit well with me at all. It led me to believe I could not trust McCain to do what was in the best interest of the party.

In 2001, speculation that McCain might change his party affiliation to switch the balance of power in the Senate only fueled that mistrust.

In 2004, McCain made his "dishonest and dishonorable" comment regarding the Swift Boat Vets. He sided with John Kerry, rather than with 250 plus Vietnam vets, including some fellow POWs. He didn't just say that he would have to look into the claims of the Swifties, or that he didn't know the specifics. No. He called the actions of those men "dishonest and dishonorable." Not only did he not apologize for that comment, but he reportedly entertained the idea of running with John Kerry.

I had put much of that out of my mind though. It is now 2008 and my desire to see Republicans retain control of the White House, and particularly to see a Republican commander in chief, seemed most important and polls repeatedly showed McCain the candidate most likely to beat a Democrat in November. The performance of McCain in the most recent debate, characterized by some as angry and sneering, along with what appear to be unfair attacks on Mitt Romney over the issue of a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, brought it all back – the temper I saw in 2000, the repeated high profile breaks with Republicans on big issues and the flirtations with Democrats about switching parties. Unlike some conservatives I am hearing from, I will vote for McCain in November if he is the nominee. Even for all his faults, McCain has many strengths and is vastly superior to Hillary or Obama. He has impressed me on the conference calls he has held frequently with bloggers where he has patiently and candidly answered any question put to him. Foreign policy/defense is one of my top issues, and I think McCain will be strong there.

It will take a lot to convince me that he can be trusted on issues important to conservatives, though, or even that he can be trusted to positively represent the party. He has built his entire political persona on showing how much he differs from Republicans and conservatives. That does not bode well for those wanting a White House that is more conservative than the current one.

Hello schizophrenic Republicans.

What is the hysteria of the week?

From Huckabee to McCain, its the "lets eat our own" mania de jure.

Allahpundit: Coulter's rant "madness"
Allah is no McCain fan, but he knows Ann Coulter is frankly nuts. He even links to Victor Davis Hanson on how the difference between John McCain (to the right) and Hillary Clinton (to the left) might as well be the Grand Canyon.

It Makes You Wonder Who's Voting For Him
Who are these idiots in NH, SC. and FL. who are propelling McCain. Don't you have to be a meber of the party to vote in these elections or are the open to all in the caucuses?

Please set me straight, because I just can't believe he is getting the conservative vote.

McCain The Liberal Trojan Horse
McCain The Liberal Trojan Horse

NO I would not vote for a liberal in disguise as a GOP member. Hi is not and never was. Let him make hi won party.

What a person does is not important, it is why the does it that determines whether it is right or wrong. Mitt Romney looks like the uncle you hate, so you hate Romney, that is emotional substitution, and you can count on MSM to exploit your personal prejudices to blind you to the real deal.

Mitt Romney is challenging the corruption that exists in Washington, that nobody has. His real intent is to clean up Washington for a better America, that is failing us today. This does not mean that everything is corrupt, However, he has stuck his neck our for you his family and his country, because of all the freeloaders who are in effect, insiders like McCain the liberal Trojan Horse, to gut the GOP. Huckabee was used by them and he lost traction after McCain arose in the polls. Mike is gullible, not bad. He is sincere but not wise. He has made some political blunders he will need to answer for, but so have we all. Ron Paul is too, liberal on social issues.

Please do not fail to visit Mitt's web, to get to know the real Mitt, you need to know his motives, and you can only learn that by knowing what hurts in his heart, or falls below his standards. http://mittromney.com/

Mitt like an iceberg where we can only see 10% of his true value, the other 90% is in the doing. His successes tower above all the candidates. Prove me wrong!

McCain IS a train wreck
and way too many moderate-to-left voters are voting for him. He is no more a conservative than the Geico gecko.

The GOP party no longer properly represents conservative ideals. When people like Mel Martinez rise to the top, there's something seriously wrong.

Lorie Byrd can vote for whomever she wants. I will never vote for John McCain. I think he is a traitor to conservative ideals and I think he is a power-mad deranged tiny little man who would be better off completely away from the political landscape -- and America, too, would be better off without him. He is simply a Democrat in GOP representation and we could do without him.

Giuliani led 10 times over Mitt at first, and Mitt was not even known.

Now he rose above them. Only the corrupt Washington lawyers judges, politicians are against Mitt, but the honest ones support him. My I ask are you a corrupt one or an ethical one?

He attempted to jump paries 3 times

he begged to be John Kerry's running mate

VENGEFUL McCain will jump parties after we

McCain

Why
Considering McCain's style: Because of all his years in the Senate, I bet there is a whole bunch of things he has always wanted to do. Given his decidely liberal direction, I can imagine what the outcome would be. I'm sure he has a pocketful of pet desires. That makes me pessimistic. Even Hillary has not been in the Senate as long. (not that it makes her a better candidate)

a 9/11 Hero who never got credit
When this country was so miserable,

FLAT ON ITS FACE right after 9/11

The Real man of the hour was Mitt Romney, AND that man of incredible inspiration at this country’s low point did not get the credit

Romney did NOT cancel the Olympics because of 9/11 !
Despite the hand wringing, screaming from the wimps here in the USA
And around the world to cancel it !

ROMNEY gave this country back its SPIRIT, pride, inspiration, GLORY, INCOME, grace, dignity, courage, SUCCESS, FOOT in face of evil: when he
Proceeded with holding the Olympics and had
100% of the nations participated:
NO Nation BACKED OUT
NO SECURITY GLITCH

AND they RAKED IN HUGE new MONEY FOR THIS COUNTRY
And the Olympic organization

WHEN ROMNEY took over the Olympics, it was
Doomed, devastated
falling apart
Had a sea of red ink
Scandal riddled

He cleaned up the Olympics working with the Internation community
And turned it around:

HE LEFT IT IN THE BLACK

Did not take a dime for his 3 years of work:

THAT IS INCREDIBLE PROVEN LEADERSHIP

Front runners, McCain and Romney
Are classical lying politicians.
Put an R behind their names and presto, we now have two men who are patriots, conservatives and saints.

Shakespeare said it best
"All the world is a stage"

The reason to vote for one of these actors is cause we "fear" the democrats.

I got a call from the GOP yesterday, wanting money.
He told me how much money Hilliary and Obama are raising, so the GOP needs money.
I told him that this is what American Politics has come down to, which actor can buy the Office of President. Course he denied it

I also said, try the illegal aliens coming in for some cash, thats who the GOP has backed up till now.
I have come to the place I want anyone but a republican or a democrat in office.
Pipe dream, perhaps.
I do know truth is the most powerful inspiration on this planet, and if we Americans will wake up and begin a true search for truth, as our fathers did, we may have a chance to restore honesty in Government.
As long as we have so many promoting any person for President cause they are either a republican or a democrat, the truth will be set aside waiting for its children.
If truth is ignored by this generation, always hope the children will not grow up to be the hypocrites this lying generation has produced running for public office, and their backers.

The word Statesman is not even heard among the crafty, sly and conniving hypocrites like Romney, McCain, Hilliary or Obama, cause none are close to being one.
Yet they are the ones being promoted anyway.

We have no one running who is a truth teller.
America is filled with liars, hypocrites, sodomites, fornicators and adulterers, so they run from the truth and we get a democrat or a republican hypocrite.

Truth stills wins over liars anyway cause we get the leader we deserve.
A blithering idiot, like the liar now in office and the one before him.

I'm another who
will vote for McCain the day pigs sprout wings and fly.

The man doesn't want to be elected President, he wants to be coronated Emperor. He's a magalomanical self-aggrandizer, and a very big danger to this country.

In the Cali primary next week, I'll vote for his opponent (Romney), and if McCain secures the nomination I'll again vote for his opponent in November.

John McCain for Security
We've come down to the big Tues. push for delegates. I'm disheartened about Romney's chances. Does McCain represent conservative republican views? No! Is he a better choice than the emotacrats? Yes! IF McCain is the eventual nominee, will I vote for him? I reserve that decision until after he's been through the vetting process against whoever the dems. nominate.

the Liberals/ illegals vote for Mccain
the Liberals and illegals vote for McCain

the MSM has been pounding McCains name and

so those who are illiterate do not take time to research jump to the name recognition:

there should be a quiz to be allowed to vote

NO one has even hrad the Romney name and they simply do not know anything about him:

they all follow the MSM like lemmings then complain:

Wait
Wait until Hitlery unleashes on MCSHAME about his race hating.

They recognized MLK DAY later so they would get the SUPER BOWL. Wow what a joke.

B2slim, most folks don't have enough time to stay current on anything more than PTA meetings, soccer games, first dates, and mortage payments. What news they do catch is indeed the dinosaur media template of how bad things are.

Yea Lorie!
In Tx we have been repeatedly shafted by those who "say" they are Republicans. When I see McCain I remember the California Ped. who broke into the house and kidnapped the little girl, killed her and dumped her by the road as just some trash. Would probably got a few years in prison till the usual suspects would be clammoring for his release. Instead he gave the whole courtroom the finger. I am tired of people who claim to be Republicans and especially John McCain give us the finger!

there was a time
“When he was down in the polls and did not appear likely to have a shot at the nomination, it was easy to forgive and forget.”

Yea, he’s back with an improved ego to match. I remember his media blitz for his beloved Feingold (BCRA). That went on and on keeping him on camera. He’s as media shy as Chucky Schumer.

Character Matters
My dislike for McLame is equaled by my dislike for the people who are endorsing him. That band of silk-upholstered opportunists and hustlers arent my political leaders. They've pulled a fast one and split the conservative vote between Romney and the worthless stooge Huckster-Bee. Fine. Nice trick. Enjoy Clinton III you creeps.

John McCain - People Freaking Out
You sow what you reap - as it says in the most policitally inccorect book of all time.

The nomination of McCain will underscore the reason I left the Republican party after over 30 years of membership - I began to recognize that the Socialists had taken over party control.

Just as the Democrats were taken over during the 50's/60's, the GOP has finally succumbed as well during the 90's to leadership that is more socialist than any in recent memory.

Both parties now no longer represent the people, they represent their own interests - at the expense of the people.

Shame on us for allowing this to happen. We should therefore either take control back by more actve involvement or make the Indpendent voter a real factor in the coming election.

David - Boston

on this. She writes:

And yet she will vote for him??

As for this:
"I was stationed in AZ when they/he didnt recognize MLK DAY and MCSHAME sure didnt push for it."

OK, sure, he's done some things right [why are we honoring *any* extreme socialists/communists anyway? Of course if you've been brainwashed by the adulatory coverage of MLK, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. The MSM and other leftists prefer it that way].

But that's just not enough. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Recall that it took Carter to get Reagan
Same here -- if it is McCain v. Billary/Obama, I will vote Dems to hope that the shock to the U.S. will bring about a redefinition of what is important within the Republican party. It will probably take a fiscal disaster like in the 70's to bring us around to lower taxes and spending as a philosophy.

Yep, PhdJD, I'm with you
Exactly right. Then, next time in 2012, the GOP can run Jindahl and Palin in any combination and sweep a landslide.

Why are we freaking out?
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that McCain's ultimate goal is to destroy any opposition to the Republican Party, and being elected president as a Republican will give him the power to do just that.

John McCain - People Freaking Out
Correction to my article - You reap what you sow - I was so upset I didn't review before posting.

Liberalism
The Rep party has decided to defeat Dem liberals, by becoming liberal. McCain is a Rep Lieberman, strong on national defense (except for the invasion of our borders) and strong for socialistic positions. Medved thinks we should welcome RINOs in order to expand the party. He is dead wrong and I have resisted this over the years. My position is that when we have a RINO in office it is harder to get a real Rep in that office. If it is held by a Dem, then we have a chance to throw him/her out and replace them with a conservative Rep. If McCain is elected then the Rep party as we know it will cease to exist and the formation of a new party will be required. Unfortunately, that will not happen in my lifetime. If McCain is the Rep candidate then I will vote for the Dem candidate and hope for reform of the existing Rep. party. As a delegate for Reagan I requested that he not appoint anyone from the Rockefeller wing of the party, particularly Bush, as his VP. Reagan did not listen, and I believe by his action he has put the Rep. party on line to become non-existent.

Freaking out over a Freak
McCain is not only mistaken but antagonistic over many conservative principles, such as:
Economy - as recently as December 2007, he admitted, as is evident, "he does not know the economy very well."
Gay Marriage - McCain joined the liberal in fighting against a marriage amendment, overwhelming supported in the states. This would preclude state courts - like Mass. from inventing constitutional rights under state EP's.
Freedom of Speech - The US Supreme Court held in McCain v. Wisc. Right to Life that Section 203 of BCRA (McCain/Feingold) was unconstitutional as applied. CJ Roberts' opinion was joined by J Alito, whom McCain recently slandered as "wearing conservatism on his sleave."
McCain is also a proven liar (see, e.g. the "timetables" issue) and a nasty person.
If there is anything left to the Republican party it would be insanity and suicidal to nominate McCain.

Bashing Mitt
Conservatives spend time trying to convert people to our point of view, then when one does (Mitt) he gets bashed. The libs welcomed Lincoln Chafee and "Jumpin'" Jim Jeffords with open arms. I saw and heard Romney's position and explanation of his change of heart. It didn't seem phoney or contrived. McCain on the other hand has many times supported liberal positions, runs away from those positions and will lie about his opponent's position, that speaks to character.

He can win! But who cares?
Of course he can win: if the Republicans can get all "their people" to the polls, they win. But if they nominate only a faux-conservative, one whose habit of assisting the Dhimmicrats has only accelerated in recent years, "their people" won't be theirs anymore, starting with me.

The alternatives? One whose record of assisting the Dhimmicrats is not in such recent memory; another who is conservative only socially and nowhere else; another who promises to lose the war and marvels that anyone sees anything wrong with that.

There was a candidate who could satisfy ALL branches of the Reagan Coalition, but could you be satisfied with one who met you 90% of the way on social, fiscal, AND security issues? No, you demanded one who was 95% on social issues but only 15% on fiscal, or 95% on security but only 15% on social, etc. So insistent were you that your guy had to lead and the rest had to follow, that you didn't care how many you alienated. And now you're looking at the guy who might not meet you even halfway on anything. Smart.

I can't believe the same people who rose up and shook the Senate last year are now assuring the nomination of the very target of their ire. Ah, but it's not the same people, is it: anybody can walk in and pretend to be a Republican for a few minutes.

I endorse Ann Coulter's reasoning that, if we're to be stuck with a leader who will ruin the country with liberal policies, then let that be a Dhimmicrat and let blame fall where it ought. At least Pres. Rodham would face GOP opposition in Congress, even if it's only their knees jerking. Pres. McCain would find Congress very accommodating: the D's will give him what he wants because it is what they want; the Stupid Party will also give him what he wants out of misplaced loyalty.

When the people choose incorrectly, they must be punished. How else will they learn?

McCain's rhetoric
Over the past twenty five (25) years I have watched Mr. McCain evolve from being a "conservative" to the liberal he now is. I have no fear of him, just disdain. I am an economic conservative. For all of his talk about principles, I believe he is almost entirely clueless when it comes to economic principles. He stands for strong national security?

Then why is he such a "Casper Milktoast" on the immigration issues we face? You don't reach "across the aisle" when the other side of the aisle is WRONG!

The only way he will get my vote if he is the Republican nominee is because the Democrat choices all spell economic disaster for this country. Still, I have my doubts. He's the only politician I know of who lies more than Hillary.

The other endorsements are the thing.
Two scarlet letters in John McCain's back pocket.

thats as scary as it gets

ITS REAL NOT JUST FEAR, REAL FACTS

Ann, Rush and other traitors
Anyone who agrees to vote democratic to make a point is not a real republican and needs to go to the libertarian website to find real happiness. And, since when do republicans require some kind of litmus test. There have always been liberal republicans and always will be. They are still more conservative than the democrats. The antipathy to Bush I and the third party candidate got us Bill for 8 years. Think it can't get worse than McCain? Imagine 8 years of Hillary with Barack as VP and standing in the wing as the "change" candidate. Independent voters make up about 40% of the electorate. The hard corps dems and hard core repubs don't win the election anymore. This election will be won by democrats crossing over to vote for McCain and independents voting against Billary.

true RINOs
McCain is hated by conservative extremists because he calls them like he sees them rather than blaming everything on MSM.

Doc Raj: Your self-centered perspective is incredible. "when we have a RINO in office it is harder to get a real Rep in that office" Doesn't the candidate who wins the Republican primary pretty much define the preference of the majority of Republicans? Who's the RINO?

Martel: "When the people choose incorrectly, they must be punished. How else will they learn?"

It looks like a good chunk of the electorate views massive deficits and a difficult-to-defend war as "choosing incorrectly".

No Thanks
I can't ever vote for McCain.

covenant: you better hope so
Actually, I see this election as LOST by Dhimmicrats crossing over to vote for McCain: they will not offset the number of Republicans crossing over to vote for anyone else. The threat to vote for Hillary is of course only hyperbole. But you Republicans will need those conservative votes that you won't be getting.

If Hillary or Obama is elected, YOU will have caused it by offering only this lame alternative. If "but they're worse" is the only thing you have to offer, then you deserve to lose.

What loyalty do we owe you? None. You are no longer the natural home of conservatives. A new National Conservative Party is now needed. And you're not invited, Senator.

Gagging down John McCain
McCain is like a serial adulterer and conservatives represent his long suffering wife. We KNOW he'll do it again; he always does, but out of habit, or need, or fear, we somehow manage to convince ourselves of the necessity of forgiving him just one more time.

Or as Patterico brilliantly sums it up this morning:

"Q. What’s the difference between Hillary Clinton and John McCain?

A. One has a grating, disagreeable personality; has a history of financial scandal; has spoken of setting benchmarks for withdrawal from Iraq; has said the Bush tax cuts benefitted the wealthy at the expense of the middle class; has derided Sam Alito as too openly conservative; has supported amnesty for illegal immigrants (and then lied about it); has said that we shouldn’t drill in ANWR because it’s “pristine”; has misrepresented the positions of Republican candidates; wants to close Guantanamo; has spoken of sending “greedy people on Wall Street” to jail for their roles in giving subprime loans; has been endorsed by the New York Times; supports blatantly unconstitutional limits on free speech; and is hated by Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Michelle Malkin . . .

. . . and the other one’s a Democrat."

Cam
You're right: I was the RINO, and didn't know it. What it meant to be a Republican is no more. I stayed the same. They changed. Enjoy your life as a Whig.

You rebuttal of my observation has no teeth. It's easy to blame this president for the deficits, given his "compassionate" free-spending ways and his not being able to find his veto pen, but Bush is not on the ballot this year, or hadn't you noticed? And there is nothing in the primary election results so far to endorse your assertion on the war, which is "difficult to defend" only if you're with Code Pink or MoveOn.org.

Martel: Point taken...we'll see
You have to admit that for political junkies this is the most interesting election in a long time. The first woman, the first black man and the first "oldest" candidate. Reagan, when asked if age should be a factor, said that it would be unfair to hold the youth and inexperience of his opponent against him. I consider myself conservative but I find this animosity and personality attacks against McCain undignified, unprofessional and strangely as strident as the liberal blogs.

Lori, I appreciate your
insightful column, but I do not agree that voting for McCain is the right answer, nor will I vote for him. I do not know about voting for the Democrat though, I would prefer to write in Romney. Like Jason Lewis, hosting for Rush today, said "the game is up" and conservatives are no longer going to sit back the pick the lesser of two evils.

Brian R. and JD, PHD have pointed this out (as other posters). What I am wondering about is what covenant posted: if enough conservatives vote for the Democrat because they are disgusted with McCain and enough libs/independents vote for McCain because they can't stand Hillary or Obama....won't it just even out?

I am sickened that the media (pointed out by another poster) has determined McCain will be the nominee. I have emailed the state and national GOP's and told them it literally sickens me that they are pushing McCain, making sure Romney is trashed, and keeping Huckabee in the race to take votes from Romney (just as they kept Guliani and Thompson in.) Makes me wonder if some kind of deal was struck back in 2000?

The name recognition thing is exactly right! My in-laws had NO idea of the things McCain has done in the name of being a Republican until I printed off some TH articles for them. They just figure McCain being a war hero is a good thing and all they listen to is dinosaur media. Even listening to supposedly "fair and balanced" FOX is not a sure thing any more.

I am still holding out hope and optimism for Feb. 5 Romney win. Also, can anyone enlighten me with details about brokered conventions? What happens with these?

I'm not freaking out
But if McCain is the nominee, I will stay home on election day.

I will not vote for anyone who advocates completely open borders and hires a "Mexico First" individual as a close advisor.

I will not vote for anyone against tax cuts and for tax increases.

I will not vote for anyone who wants to expand the federal government at the expense of individual freedom.

I will not vote for anyone who works to subvert the Constitution.

I will not vote for anyone who wants to destroy the United States economy in the name of the global warming scam.

And I will not vote for anyone who is the darling of the leftist socialists.

McCain, if nominated, may set a record by losing more states than the chumps who ran against Reagan.

I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR MCCAIN
McCain-Feingold

Kennedy-McCain

The Gang of 14, etc.

Who can forgive those transgressions?

Uh, no. I will NEVER vote for this piece of work.

If he is the nominee, I'll stay home or vote third party. If the country is going to go to hell in a handbasket, I'd rather it be under a Democrat than someone who is ostensibly "Republican"...whatever that means these days.

Who are the MORONS that anointed this guy?

Holding ones Nose?
Why have we jumped ahead to the hold your nose and vote McCain in the General Election?

We are still in the primary and can still right this ship. Vote Romney! If it doesn't work out for Romney and McCain get the nod, then we can hold our noses and vote McCain against the Democrats.

p.s. scarry how winning the presidecy has become more important than principle. I fear for the conservative movement.

A White House more Conservative
This column hits the nail on the head with that one. I believe one of the reasons we have not seen a more excited conservative base during these months, is that we are looking for a more conservative candidate than President Bush, and haven't been given that choice. But, if we get stuck with John McCain, I will have to vote for him, because he is better than Clinton or Obama. But, he doesn't deserve our votes for all those reasons here and more, and it will be a sad day if I have to vote for him. I will be voting for Romney in our primary next Tuesday.

no more nose holding
Sorry, but I'll need both hands to vote and will be unable to hold my nose.

I wanted Giuliani, but can vote
McCain or Romney.

Neirher are perfect cons., but they both have enough experience and credentials to make good candidates against Hillary or Obama.

Depsite the MSM's mighty effort to produce a recession and make the pres. race "the economy, stupid" again, the economy isn't in recession and after the Dec. and Jan. jobs numbers have been readjusted, it does not look like any recession will help the Dems. this year. (What a party: can't win except for depressions and wars.)

Ergo, in the end, the big issue will likely be Iraq and the war on terror. Both Dems. are wimpy pacifists with nothing to commend them as commanders-in-chief (Hlllary's famous husband never even learned to salute properly, disrespecting the Marines who would've given their lives for Clinton for eight years).

Obama has NO military or exec. experience. He has no record in his IL leg. except hundreds of times of voting "present" and now he isn't even in the US Senate where he has an unfinished term to vote present.

Am. voters have short memories, but they do realize we've had no more attacks since 1991. Attacks continue apace in Thailand and Algeria and Pakistan and India. Our success is not just some fluke produced by the secrets-revealing MSM and whacky pacifist Dems. in Congress.

When push comes to shove, Americans won't abandon troops in harms way who are fighting to keep terror in the streets from swamping Am. cities.

Cons. will have to vote, holding their noses or however, but they will habe to vote, the outcome is too imp. to miss.

no vote for McCain
The selection of candidates reminds me of the time my brother and I hired ourselves out to clean a chicken house we later learned had not been cleaned in over ten years, except that we finished that job with money in our pockets.

McCain is truly the worst, and I do not care if he can beat Ms Clinton. That would still be the worst possible situation, even for the GOP. A McCain win would be as good for the GOP as Pyrrhus' victories were for Epirus.

He will not defend Republican principles like the role of the Constitution (McCain-Feingold) and would compromise with the Dems even when compromise is unnecessary (gang of 14).

And I do not care if there are "liberals" in the GOP. One of those of the McCain stripe has not been in the White House since Taft. If we are to have a Democrat in the office I would rather he have a "D" after his name.

If you don't vote Rep.,
you may as well vote Dem. Then, whatever happens, you should remind yourself you have no excuse to weep and wail.

McCain may not be perfect, but he's better than any Dem. running, and as a pres., he might be a stronger cons. than anyone thinks. He has an 83% for the Am. Cons. Union, which is not an A, but is a solid B.

McCain is a person of honor, duty, country, and surely none of the Dems. running can even claim one of them.

McCaine and Kerry, just a couple of john
Thank you so much Lorie for reminding me of John the Hero's support of John Kerry, another Hero. The Swiftee's actions were the best part of that campaign in which we saw the anti-America "hero" get his reward. Shame on John McCaine for that moment alone which vets should never forget.

You've got a deal, Renny
If McCain wins the nomination, I WILL vote Dem.

At least that way when I'm getting knifed, it will be from the front and I'll have a chance of fighting it off.

Look into McCain's work with Kerry .
Co-Chairs of the POW/MIA Committee in the Senate.

Go to the swiftboat vets blog, read the info there, on McCains actions then and still, then if you still support McCain, there is no hope, your a liberal also, just accept it.

Will I vote for McCain?
If John McCain is the Republican nominee, I won't vote for Hillary or Barack on election day. I will just vote "gone fishing" and skip the elections all together. I never signed a promise to vote for unprincipled people who are extremely egoistic.
I wouldn't vote for Hugo Chavez either.
If neither party can come up with a viable candidate, then neither will get my vote.

Under the Radar
Why is Huckabee always flying under the radar? He is such an easy target for the media. He supports the fair tax which is a federal sales tax meant to relieve the burden of the taxpayer by making illegals pay tax...hmmmm...YET he says he is NOT for amnesty....why does this slip by soooo many debate commentators?....it is simple math...both sides of the coin....

How far a depth has the American voter sunk to? No self confidence, no independence to think and reason and vote against an "endorsement" of a good old boy coalition...no courage to stand up to a "special" more intellegent person that knows how the voter really should vote. When soldiers have faced guns to grant that citizen the free right to choose. How easily it is robbed...stolen...cajoled away...

How battered the American voter is that he/she will hear a random poll of 500-700 strangers opinions and then vote accordingly...either stay away from the booths or change who they really thought they would vote for..or be so lazy as to wait for the poll results just before the election to decide...

Where oh where has American gone? Have so many brave men and women died in vain who have fought for fair and free elections, that the decision to vote is taken so lightly? Is the wail we hear, the last throes of a dying conservative movement? I sincerely pray it is not.

Proof That McCain Is A Liberal
"In 2000, going into the South Carolina primary, McCain ran a television ad accusing George Bush of “twisting the truth like Clinton,” while at the same time complaining about negative campaign tactics."
Criticizing others, for doing the same things as he, is a classic liberal/alcoholic/addict trait. Another is excusing wrongdoing, if it will benefit himself(amnesty for the illegal alien/voters), while nitpicking others. I rest my case----because I have to go throw up.

On the subject of McCain
I've done a lot of thinking about McCain recently. I know that he gets fairly high marks as a conservative from those who rate such things. I guess my feelings about voting for him are tied to how I feel about his support for the amnesty bill and his rather less than enthusiastic conversion on the whole border security issue. I just has a very serious problem with the way he's handled that issue. My impression is that he still thinks that once he's in charge he'll pat us good indians on the back and put a kick me sign on us. I'll have to serious look at the libertarian candidate...I'd look at the constitution party candidate but they aren't active in this state.

I won't vote for McCain
It won't matter anyway because I live in Illinois.

But I've voted for every Republican candidate for President since 1972 and unless Romney pulls it out, I'm sitting this one out.

Oh I'll still vote for Republicans on the rest of my ballot. But that may end up being futile and I worry that a solid conservative like Peter Roskam is going to get swept away in a Democratic landslide we have not seen since 1964.

Traitor
McCain is like Benedict Arnold and Duke Cunningham. He was a war hero. He is now a vile old man who is a traitor to his country. I will vote Democrat for the first time in my life if he wins.

He is mentally unstable.

Lorie Byrd
writes, "I will vote for McCain in November if he is the nominee. Even for all his faults, McCain has many strengths and is vastly superior to Hillary or Obama."

I will not vote for McCain in November if he is the nominee. Even though he is vastly superior to Hillary or Obama, his election as president would be too harmful to the long run viability of the republican party. I will not vote for him and I do so out of party loyalty. The country can survive four years of Hillary or Obama, the republican party cannot survive four years of John McCain.

wuzzledorf
writes, "Why is Huckabee always flying under the radar? He is such an easy target for the media. "

One word. Honesty

The Huckster has shown himself to be a politcal opportunist. His attacks on Romney's religion are not only despicable but unconstitutional. He also embraces global warmism as does McCain. The simple fact of the matter is that any candidate who embraces global warmism is a cattle herder and we are the cattle.

I Don't Know About That
With the Dem's denial of the danger to America , posed by the Islamists, several large cities may not survive 4 years of Hillatola and Billibubba Clintahammud, or Barak Hussiene Obama leading the sheep that are mainstream Americans. That scares me so much, I gotta go throw up.

it will be worse than Dole
Juan McAmnesty will get clobbered and the 'Crats will gain more seats because many of us will stay home. This is first and foremost Presidente Jorge's fault for alienating many by being a big spending RINO. NOW he has the cahunas to speak of using his veto pen-- when did you discover that, Jorge?!

There is some debate about Juan McQuisling and how truly conservative he is. During 2007, McAmnesty was absent too often to evaluate his votes, but in 2006 he was about middle of the pack among all 100 Senators in liberal posture voting! Only a handful of RINOS had more liberal voting records, while 46 Senators had a more conservative record based on Senate votes. Again, VERY few Republicans had a more liberal record. Straight talk?! Hmmm. You can check this out here:

http://nationaljournal.com/voteratings/sen/lib.htm

The PC ilk including the MSM love McAmnesty because he sticks his wagging old finger into the eyes of conservatives. They have,,in Brer Rabbit fashion, suggested that he would be the best candidate for the former party of reason. We, in turn, will give him the finger back, but not in the voting booth.

lodestar
Which finger are you talking about? I will have to work mine to the bone, if he gets elected pres., and the resulting gold rush of illegals competing for Americans' jobs and money. It is sickening to think about. Here I go again.

Bush=McCain Light
McCain=Hillary Light.

Does Anyone Know
About the loan McCain couldn't get without taking out a life insurance policy to cover the requested NINE MONTH loan!
Doesn't a Bank require a physical for a million dollar loan? Isn't THAT a report we might like to hear details about?

Come to think of it....if a bank can do it, why can't We The People demand Our Presidential Candidates take a physical. In this day and age, why do we take the chance with a candidates health?

To be brutally honest, Hillary has been trying to burnish her national security credentials (such as they are) from the beginning, knowing how important it would be to her fight against the eventual nominee. Certainly, she has tacked left as her coronation appeared in jeopardy. It is just pandering. She will not withdraw from Iraq, she just wants universal healthcare and a socialist economy, something we are equally likely to get from McCain as he sucks up to the MSM. I think your fears are overblown and I stand by my pledge. Nationalized healthcare in this country would be the single biggest boon to the conservative cause that I can think of.

One Who Should Know
Dennis Haestert has endorsed Mitt Romney and in doing so called McCain the "least reliable Republican vote in the Senate".

I knew I came here for a reason. Very fine idea. Count me as a supporter.

I take exception to "freaking out"
I consider myself quite level headed and calm on political matters.
McLame is not going to receive a vote from me.

There are enough items and persons on the ballot here in Ohio to vote for. There are even some to vote against.

But I will not vote McCain.

If I must vote (have to ask the rules) to keep my othr selection from being voided, I will either write in a candidate I can agree with, or vote for the dem. I will not vote for McLame.

If it turned out
that McCain was only expected to live a short time AND he picked Romney as VP, I would vote for that ticket in a heartbeat.

Freaking out about McCain
John McCain has been too disagreeable to conservatives for us to have a friendly feeling toward him. We do not trust him, we think he is unstable, too old for the presidency, and vastly inferior to Mitt Romney in the type of education which qualifies one to be president, as well as experience never having been a governor or run any corporation, and further inferior in disposition, Romney being even tempered and McCain being irascible and unreasonable.

Grandma

What will it take...
for McCain supporters to understand that the man is a liberal? Why don't they understand that conservatives can't, in good conscience, vote for a liberal? Why is it that the RNC, and the RINOs in this country don't understand that conservatives won't support a liberal?

Conservatives are fighting for the soul of the Republican Party. It's better to have the Democrats screw up the country for four years. Then, just maybe the RNC will finally get the message that heading left is the path to extinction as a party.

Maybe the RNC should just give the base of the party a conservative to get behind. They're stupidity is mind-numbing. You don't see the Democrats spliting their party in two.

"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything".

McCain Not Superior To Hillary
They are about the same on the war. They are the same on the global warming scam and carbon taxing us into recession for nothing.

They are similar on judges. Hillary will put up liberals. McCain will put moderates on the bench. Neither will overturn Roe.

They will not drill for oil, go nuclear, or build new refineries.

McCain will amnesty 15 million new Dems. They will make Republicans irrelivent. Good by prosperity. Hello socialism.

Both Hillary or McCain will try to destroy our country. Let it be the Dems, not a RINO who will blame the whole Republican party.

I'm starting "Conservatives For Hillary & Against McCain".

If McCain
is the nominee, it's not that I will stay at home on election day. I just WON'T vote for him, EVER!

McCain, not the McCain of 2000
I've voted GOP in every election since 1980, but I won't vote for McCain, even if he is the GOP nominee. I could have voted for him in 2000 had he been the GOP nominee then; however, most of what he has done that bothers me has happened since then. He's a changed man since 2000.

I was especially offended by his attacking the Swift Boat veterans as "dishonorable and dishonest" when they told the truth about the dishonest and dishonorable John Kerry.

You speak with clarity
Ms Byrd. You state the pros and cons. Its just that i differ in conclusion. I think, in the long run, McC will damage the country more than Hillary/BHo. Here's why. McCain will be bearing the banner of the right wing. His inevitable failures and clearly socialistic programs, stemming from his arrogant and elitist ego, and desire for media (left wing) approval, will tarnish that banner forever. It will take a new party to re-proclaim the benefits of noticing results, fiscal responsibility, and non-intrusive govt. If the Dem is elected, the Gop will be driven into a different role, that of opposition to the moves of the other party. Not only is this likely to produce about the same leftward drift, but it will make the opponents of failing policies clear.

Lorie Lorie Lorie
McCain Presidency will be the total destruction of the Republican Party! I would rather endure 4yrs of sheer pain and agony of the Dems than allow the Republican Party to become something of the past. McCain as President will give way to Dems in the White House for many years to follow. Ill take my Bad Medicine now and hopes that the Dems disaster will only allow them 4yrs on Penn Ave. 4 yrs of Dems now will bring the correction the Rep Party needs so desperately!!!!!

In my state
we don't have to vote a straight ticket. We have that option but we can vote individually also. We have to choose one or the other in primaries though.
If you can vote for individuals, in the general
then please don't stay home. The President can't do much damage if he's got strong opposition from the Congress. The Congress wasn't our real problem but the good old country club boys in the Senate (you know, those who get those tax cuts for the rich.) that really sandbagged us, or tried. If I do nothing else
I will vote down ticket, I've two real conservatives on the ballot that I know of that I won't not vote for. Check out your down ticket candidates, see where they stand on issues.

Whoops
Make that the House wasn't our real problem.

McCain not elected by party
I think it is significant that Lori Byrd and the posters on Town Hall believe that McCain's first allegiance ought to be to (first of all) certain principles dubbed conservative (then second of all) to the republican party. It appears that the conservatives on town hall have no respect for our American system of government, wherein citizens vote for a senator to represent them (and theoretically, but almost never honored) the senator tries to represent all the citizens of his state rather than only those who voted for him.

Perhaps this innate scorn for our system of government and the citizens of our great nation is the reason that McCain is doing so well with those citizens so scorned by conservatives. Perhaps the citizens who vote for McCain see something that says he will represent them and put them before abstract conservative principles and the party.

McCain just got another endorsement
The LA Times.

Man.... why are all the wrong people endorsing this guy? Doesn't that raise any questions at all to you McCainiacs?

Lori and the Hate McCainiacs
Lori sounds like most republican columnists over McCain. No honor.

She picks on McCain over the swiftboat defense. McCain condemned the throwing the medals away, but refused to slander Kerry on his war records. That is called honor. Military people tend to have it. Talk radio bashers tend not to.

Lori also said that speculation of McCain swithcing parties fueled mistrust. That is of course a lie. McCain was one of Bushes biggest supporters in the senate after 2002 and campaigned heavily for him in 2004. Lori saying that McCain considerd being a running mate to Kerry is also a lie. Kerry considered McCain. McCain went to support the president.

Lori also was upset of McCain's metldown over dirty tricks, like saying he had an illegitimater daughter (I would have been upset over that one) but at the same time get on McCain's case about his unfair attacks (Yes they were a little unfair, but were love taps compared to the 2000 slander).

OK you don't like McCain. We get it, but is seems that McCain's critics can't use anything but slanders because obviously alot of people like him and are voting for him. And most of those people are republicans and many are conservatives. And when he wins big on Super Tuesday they will come up with new material. I heard a Keating Five one on Laura today.

Sad and sadder.

Maybe
it's because the base is NOT freaking out about John McCain. Obviously, they aren't "freaking out" about John McCain because they are voting for him.

Right-wing pundits DO NOT constitute "the base" and the loud Romney vultures don't constitute the base. They would be freaking out about anyone if it wasn't Romney. Even if Romney were running in the democratic party like he belongs.

Concensus
Ok, it seems to be the concensus everywhere that McCain is not the man. He took Florida with 36% ...that would mean a 64% of the voters do not really want to vote for him and a lot of them vehemently. What seems to be the problem then is who to get behind. It is sort of like a train coming straight for you as you stand on the tracks. After Tuesday what will happen? If the Huckabee voters do not come in second place will they hang on to the utter bitter crash or will they jump to one side or the other? I've never been much for thrillers...but looks like we got to live this one out. If they don't move...who buries this country?

Bye Bye to "Murphy's Law" roberto!
He's a short timer!!! LOL

Staring you in the face
Lorie,I think the answer should be...why is everyone freaking out over Romney? We have a black man and a Mormon running for president and who does it look like the citizens might pick in both parties...the most liberal and certainly not the black man or the Mormon. Is it because the conservative movement is so fractured they can not find themselves or is it some other reason that the conservatives cannot come behind the definite conservative leader in this race?

If the black man were running on the conservative side and the Mormon were running on the Democratic side would it make any difference? Or would both candidates still face that same wall.

This country has come a long way from the 1800's when the blacks were enslaved and the Mormons were killed just because who they were....but have we really come far enough? We can not expect to build and protect a free country if we cannot free ourselves from the prejudices that enslave our growth.

I am white and I am a Mormon...and my grandchildren are white Mormons and their best friends are black. Here's hoping that a younger generation is able to heal what our generation does not appear it is able to do.

Unfortunately, the data does NOT support

what Murphy's Law wobbie posts... EVER!

But, if anyone knows about taking anything out of context, that would be wobbie.... LOL

Bye bye wobbie..... Remember... "You have the right......" hehehehe

wuzzeldorf
Rommneys Mormonism has nothing to do with flip flops on key conservative issues. For goodness sake there are TV clips of him openly supporting Abortion and Gay Marriage. I Know Mormons do not support these things, so isnt the bigotry you speak of exactly what you are doing by supporting Romney just because he is a Mormon?? Just a thought?

free agency
Florida:"Rommneys Mormonism has nothing to do with flip flops on key conservative issues. For goodness sake there are TV clips of him openly supporting Abortion and Gay Marriage. I Know Mormons do not support these things, so isnt the bigotry you speak of exactly what you are doing by supporting Romney just because he is a Mormon??"

Well, let me address one question at a time. I support Romney because he is the only honest man up there. I am 60 years old...do you know how many NONMORMONS I have supported for political positions?...Your assumption shows your prejudice against my decisions...plain and simple when you call me a bigot...

This mantra of flip flop is ridiculous. Are you the same person today that you were when you were younger. I am not.

I believe Romney when he says he did not support abortion he supported a person's free agency. It was a difficult choice for him to make to have the power to force someone to do something with their own body. However, he has said time and again that when it came down to the point that he had to support life...And he did everytime. If you are prolife, it amazes me that you have a problem with this. And yes I have seen the lies and the twisted version of truth that stamps all over this Internet.

and your "just a thought" is not a thought it is an accusation against me...Now that is the truth..

Florida
And you know what? As a woman in the past I have struggled with the decision that any person could force me to do anything with my body. And I have sympathy for people who struggle with this decision on whether they should be able to force such an issue on another human being...but like Romney when the decision stares me in the face I have to support life. I understand human nature is different between one person and another and I understand different political opinions...

What I do not understand is the bigotry that has shown its ugly face in this election against a kind father, a dedicated leader of a church, a recognized successful business, a man who donate his time and talents to produce a world wide Olympics that did honor to our country and our athletes. Do not tell me that there does not exist in this election bigotry, I have heard it out of the mouths of politicians and it has been written all over this Internet...that is all I wanted to say in my post.It does a great disservice to a great countries election. If you want to deny it exists...so be it.

Republican Party =

Gee BrianR, haven't you scriped wobbie

That's what I thought... LOL

But that's okay. Pretty soon he'll be hearing the knock--knock--knock on his front door, and then he'll be hearing the words... "You have the right to remain......"

Bye bye wobbie..... hehehehehe :-)

No, Anne
He'll be hearing that knock knock, with me saying "You want to call me Benedict Arnold to my face?"

Skid marks in the shorts time for the maggot.

Anne what is the progress
on the pursuit of Robert has it gone any further then just notes to Naval authorities.

Aaaah, yikes! NO ONE IN HIS/HER

right mind would do that!

But then, little wobbie is obviously totally lacking in the "mind" area.... and forget "right mind."

But you'd better do it soon 'cause the worm is about to be busted... BIG TIME, and once he hears those magical words... "You have the right to remain....." you'll lose your chance to make buttermilk out of him...

Romney owes
Romney is fond of saying that he owes nothing to the Washington establishment. In a way that is true. However, when he finally gets the nomination he will owe a very large debt to the conservative undernews.

He will owe much to Hewitt, Hannity, Rush and the others who have fought to get him to the nomination.

If conservatives had worries about Romney flipping back to moderate you can forget about it. Romney will want to get re-elected in 1212 and he will know where his votes and support come from.

To some extent the conservative movement owns Romney.

doug: Marines Dad has heard from them

at least once that I know of....

And, as far as I know, what Dad has heard corroborates with what my friends at Langley said... not ONE thing that wobbie claims is true....

wobbie... knock, knock, knock.. :-)

"You have the right to remain....." hehehehehe

McCain is a Traitor
JosephR, you are correct. Robert, you are an idiot. Go away and dwell in Kos-land.

Doug...you will find that Anne is ...
spot on ...and that "He that shall remain nameless" is the definition of exageration! try to scroll by his comments...It will be hard to do this since it is like not looking at a pile up on the side on the road....
and the little bast**d is quite obviously intelligent :)

Conservatives for Hillybama
I WILL NOT vote for The MacChurian Candidate becaue he is wrong on Immigration, MacFeinianism, Gang of 14, ANWR, Waterboarding and Taxes. And his pre-surge criticism makes him half wrong on the War.

But all you really need to know is that NO Self-respecting REAL CONSERVATIVE would vote for uber commiequeer Keery's VEEP!

I can't figure why some of you think it matters a damn he's "electable" if what I get for electing him is the same Socialism I get with Hillybama, only in a slightly lower, slower dose?

I now believe that if it is a choice of Mac's Socialism LIte and Hillybama's Socialism Straight it would be better for the Republic to have Socialism Straight rammed down their throats in the hope they will puke it up!
Mac's Socialims Lite kills me all the more surely for being slightly slower.

No thanks, Joe. Your's is the impeccable political logic that has brought us to the very brink of Socialism. Screw that.

I am now a self-proclaimed Charter Member of Conservatives for Hillybama.

the big mick

McCain's appeal isn't to Conservatives
Republican's are freaking out for the same reason the liberal rags, the Democrats, and the Independents, are hoping that McCain will get the nomination. To these groups, if Obama or Hillary doesn't get elected President, McCain will do just fine. McCain's appeal to these groups is strong, and it isn't because McCain is a strong Conservative. These groups are well aware of McCain's friendship to Ted Kennedy and to the Democrat party. What McCain has done, he did it so because he wanted the love of the Democrats and the media. Yes, love. McCain's Gang of 14 wasn't to get the judges President Bush wanted. It was to let the Democrats who lost the House and Senate share in the power they lost. McCain got them power back in creating the Gang of 14.

Exactly, Mav
McCain's the "glass half full" alternative.

Plus, the MSM knows that if he gets the nomination, they can absolutely tear him to shreds with the base between the nomination and the election. He's an easy target.

When I see McCains sneer..
I am reminded that I can vote for a flip flopper, I can vote for someone who doesnt share my view of every issue, I can vote for someone not of my own faith, but I simply REFUSE to vote for a JERK! John McCain, I am NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!

I'm not ''freaking out''...
--
...because over the past couple of decades, I've come to expect nothing less than this sort of RINO crap from the "Rockefeller Republican" leadership.

Look, most of you GOP cheerleaders are faunching for a McCain nomination because you believe he represents the best chance to keep Hillary - or, *WORSE* (not better, no matter how mellow he may look as a specimen of "safe" Huxtable negritude), Obama - out of the White House.

It ain't gonna happen.

And you know it, don'tcha?

2008 is the Republican Party's year to lose the Oval Office, no matter how rank and hideous a candidate is chosen by "Socialist Party A."

Deserved or not, Bush II's godawful approval ratings (combined with *HIS* alienation of the conservative base over hot-button issues like amnesty for illegals) would taint any of the "front-runner" candidates we began with - though it would work in favor of Ron Paul, who has repudiated President Bush and all the most wretched of the president's policies - so thoroughly that they *CANNOT* win in November.

The question is whether we're going to lose in a fashion that sets us up for later victory - the way we lost with Goldwater in '64 - or whether the GOP is going to go down in abject ignomy when we *COULD* have won - with anybody *BUT* that walking corpse, Bob Dole - in '96.

I know that the RINO conspiracy presently usurping the leadership of the Republican Party wouldn't recognize a moral or political principle if it took physical form with teeth and came up to bite them in the tochus, but the rest of us are in this sordid business because we love our country and the Constitution that defines it.

John McCain will *LOSE* the election if he's the GOP candidate.

Ron Paul *MAY* lose, if you have the sense to get him nominated.

But the choice isn't "win or lose" this year.

It's lose in a way that sells your soul to Satan, or go down with your colors flying.

Let wobbie have his "fun."

He's burnt toast...

Bye bye wobbie.... hehehehehe

Not voting for McCain
I can definitely vote for Romney as well as Huckabee (although I don't see how Huck can get the nomination at this point). They both have proven executive experience. They are, hands down, better candidates than McCain IMAO.

I think Republicans are freaking out is because they do not trust McCain, plain and simple. I think a lot of Republicans ARE seriously considering writing in another candidate or even voting Democrat if McCain is the nominee. And Republicans don't do that lightly. It's nearly unbearable to consider either McCain or a Dem, and that is freaking Republicans out. Voting for McCain vs. the Dems is almost like being asked to choose between the 8th and 9th Circles of Hell! lol Well, wouldn't YOU freak out?

McCain is symbolic of how many feel the Republican party is completely losing touch with conservative values. He is the embodiment of the problem even if he isn't entirely to blame. He speaks forever about "reaching across the aisle" but one wonders how much he'll work with our "side of the aisle". I'm thinking, not so much. And I'm not happy about it.

The NYT endorsement actually complained :"We have shuddered at Mr. McCain’s occasional, tactical pander to the right because he has demonstrated that he has the character to stand on principle." PANDER TO THE RIGHT?! God forbid...

He he, I'm thinking about going to cafepress and making the bumpersticker

First of all....
Someone needs to tell that "Joe" character, who posts the same crap in EVERY Townhall article he can that national polls are meaningless. The election is 10 months away with still too many candidates in the race. Things are going to change.

Second, republicans who are true to conservatism don't like McCain because...he's not conservative. He is not even remotely qualified to tackle the problem with the economy (20 years in the Navy doesn't help the resume on that issue Johnny). Additionally, he believes that "profit" is a bad thing, as he inferred to Romney in the last GOP debate.

He surrounds himself with pro-mexico staffers and supporters (Juan Hernandez -- hack hack).

He was nearly the choice for Kerry's VP running mate in 2004, and once commented the Hillary would be "a great President."

Why is this man even listed on my ballot as "republican?"

A former FredHead and Catholic for Mitt Romney.

Why are so many Republicans freaking out
Among John McCain's many apostasies from the
GOP platform, caving in on "global warming" is
one of the most unforgivable. This is because
it trashes everything else we stand for: personal
and economic liberty, smaller government, and
prosperity. Conservatives are going to start
our own "No Surrender" movement within the
party even if McCain manages to fool enough
voters on Tuesday. He had better fasten his
seatbelt.

WRONG TITLE!
Republicans are not freaking out, conservatives are freaking out because they don't want to have to vote for McCain to keep an uber socialist out of the White House and have four more years of this illegal immigrant mess, more nation building and back room deals with communists like kennedy and feingold. The Aclu will be the next one endorsing McCain so we know where he is at. Huckabee should drop out and endorse Romney because his miracle is not going to happen. God help real republican conservatives if McCain gets nominated but I have not seen him win in a red state yet and Ann Coulter is so smart again saying that she would rather see a democrat ruin the country than a fake conservative. I still believe that red state conservatives will come out in force and reject McCain and the polls mean less than nothing. The general election will seperate the socialists and the GOP and there will be a huge turnout for both sides including McCain supporters now backing Romney, If Huckabee wins then the Democrats will win after the MSM tar him with a brush making him half jimmy swaggart and half jim jones. Oh and good luck Nader.

If you can't vote for
McCain, like i can't, don't stay home, don't vote DEM, and don't write in someone. These actions are not recorded as part of a protest vote. Vote for some outsider on the ballot. If the Libertarians, or the vegetarians or the contrarians get into double figures, it may be noted and factored in to the calculations DC pols make as they take their "stands" on issues. I admit writing in Donald Duck has a certain accurate disdain about it, and does express my attitude towards the whole mess. Maybe Romney will pull it off, and i'll have to scopoe out if he is conservative enough to vote for. I have always, i now realize, been a RINO. More accurately, i am a conservative voting for Republican candidates, when they reflect enough of my principles. When they don't, i believe its better to have a Dem in there, to keep the parties distinct. The worst possible is no one representing conservative ideals, which is where we have been the last 8 or more years. A left wing Republican in the WH is the worst of both worlds.

Don't Give Up! Rally For MITT!
Florida writes: Friday, February, 01, 2008 9:09 PM

"Rommney's Mormonism has nothing to do with flip flops on key conservative issues. For goodness sake there are TV clips of him openly supporting Abortion and Gay Marriage."

Florida: you are just another blockhead who doesn't know how to listen or read properly. Mitt Romney was NEVER pro-abortion; he was pro-CHOICE, altho he never liked to use that term. He was for women to be able to make that choice for themselves. All his stances and actions, as governor of MA. were conservative and for life.

Romney was NEVER pro-gay marriage/unions. but for gay-RIGHTS. He believed that gays were due equal respect, and consideration in life and at the work place, etc. There is a huge difference between the two stances. Mitt was strongly for a marriage amendment, to secure that marriage remained for a man and a woman, as is...and thus he spoked at WA, to preserve marriage, as is.

Vote for Mitt on Feb 5. Don't give up on this great American

Keriama
I applaud your title, but your text is not calculated to gain Mitt much from the contingent he must get to win. He has clearly "listened" to the further right wing of the GOP, coming out for secure borders and maybe even no amnesty. He has placed himself to the right of McCain, and i will vote for Mitt and hope if he is the nominee. I am disappointed that my home state of florida went for McCain, and i hope it was the Hispanics and Independents who gave him his narrow win. Its up to the rest of fly-over country to select Mitt now. Frankly, i doubt Mitt has a 50/50 chance, but what do i know?

I'll not vote for McCain - here's why
Lorie has mentioned many of the reasons, but I would add to her list-

McCain has routinely poked his finger in the eye of our conservative legislators and he would continue to do that as president, and being GOP would make it more difficult for our Rep.s and Sen.s to stand against him. We've had experience now (recall prescription drugs, etc.) with Bush.

I think our congressional people would find it much easier to stand against a Dem. president and slow or stop legislation than they would if they were trying to stop a fellow GOP. McCain's reaching across the isle would continue, getting plenty of support from Dem.s and RINOs while our guys would find it more difficult to resist him.

If the socialist path is going to erupt, let it happen under a Dem. and not the GOP!

Think about it, we have tons of stories of his temper and using the F word to fellow GOP congressmen, have any of you heard of him using that word to a Dem.?

He not only doesn't represent the GOP well, he slams people of faith and corporate dealings. Ugh! Now that's what we need.

LinnieBeth
You express my sentiments exactly. Keep posting. You'll save me a lot of typing.

McCain
McCain, please eat shiitt and die.

If not McCain then who?
Romney?
All of these talking heads and anti McCain posters never say..they state they will stay home or vote for clinton but, I never hear anyone say they are voting for Romney.

Mccain ain't perfect and the man we all seem to want doesn't exist and if he did he couldn't win.

Look at the fight liberal dems put up in the Senate when we nominate someone for the Supreme Court who is even perceived as a conservative.

can you imagine the ads against our mythical pure conservative?

Do you want the left to win? Do you want our military headed by clinton, that thought makes me want to puke.

Do you want to see all we conservatives have worked for go down the drain when clinton stacks the court against us and a few million more babies get murdered in the womb?

That's what is at stake in this election and the "pure" conservatives better wake the hell up and get with the program.

Maverick
I agree with your post.

McCain will assure a Dem victory, even if by some miracle he wins the race! Which IMHO is not likely to happen.

I'd like more information on how write-in votes are handled. I don't want my entire ballot invalidated when I write in Duncan Hunter for President.

I think the only thing that could make me vote for McCain is if he had a REAL conservative running-mate and had one foot on a banana peel.

As far as reaching across the aisle
Bush went to Washington with the idea of being a 'uniter' and look how well that turned out.

McCain = anti-Reagan
McCain’s actions are different from his words. His actions are fundamentally against freedom. If McCain really believed in America freedom, like Reagan...he never would have created the “anti-freedom of speech” McCain - Fiengold bill. It would never have happened. If he was a true hero for American freedom. He would have fought againast it...tooth and nail. Instead he championed reducing American free speech. McCain believes in his own free speech...he hates to have to explain himself to the “masses”. It is much easier if he, and those who agree with him, have the only opinion.

If McCain believed in securing our country he would not have created the McCain - Kennedy amnesty bill. He would not need to be told to secure the borders first...if he really believed in secure borders he would not need the “annoying” conservative base to explain it to him. He would be explaining it to us...he would be championing the fight to secure America. If he really believed in a secure America...he would never suggest that Gitmo be closed and enemy combatants be brought into America. He if really cared about protecting America, he would not support restricting interrogation techniques. Instead he would say: ”we will do what we have to...to get the information..that will protect America lives”. He reminds me of the animal activist that puts the lives of lab mice above the humans that the researchers are trying to save.

McCain puts the comfort of our enemies above the safety of American lives.

Judge his actions and think.

Cycle of Abuse
McCain was a POW and from all accounts, beaten and tortured, for some 5 years on a daily if not regular basis.

We know the psychological impact of such behavior; we know from research that the abused comes to identify with the abuser and his/her power and upon reaching his/her own power, the victim will then abuse and punish. This is a portion of the cycle.

Anger is most often the emotion revealed from such torture and abuse. A person feeling helpless to change the situation develops quite a bit of anger, without doubt, about such mistreatment.

McCain is a walking time-bomb of anger, psychological abuse and will reveal this, as he has already at various times, showing his inability to be a leader.

McCain is a victim and as such we know what damage that type of mentality can do to a society.

Just because he endured torture and abuse doesn't qualify him to be a leader of anything.

If that were the case then all battered women should be running the country by now...well, I guess one of them does want to. ;)

scooternyc
Great post. And I agree on the battered wife one as well. Although Hitlery has had her share of battering incidents like bouncing the ashtray off of an SS agent's noggin, etc.

"I am Right" slammed McCain as the
anti Reagan and used the following as evidence:

"If McCain believed in securing our country he would not have created the McCain - Kennedy amnesty bill."

Hello, do people not remember that Reagan supported outright amnesty; no fine, no slap on the wrist, nothing. Get your facts straight.

McCain may be no Reagan, but he the most conservative candidate on the issues important to me with the best chance of defeating Bill's 3rd term (and that is exactly the alternative) and I am enthusiatically support him.

Ann Colter is over the top
Sorry, endorsing Hillary Clinton over John McCain.

This my friends is the definition of insanity.

Looking a Hillary's friends (including Billy), and looking at McCain's friends, they is simply no comparison.

McCain is not the best choice, but he is a leader, he is a veteran (Vietnam vet and POW) and he is a warrior.

Hillary is just Bill's Boy Wonder.

Romney is a plastic conservative of expiediency who makes me gag. However, I will vote for either of them over Hillary.

Freeking Out?
Great article Lorie. I just couldn't believe the conclusion you came to. Since Reagan we have been told to hold our noses and vote for the rino establishment's pick for our candidate. The party has been steered to the left every time. Now we are about to elect a lieral democrat with an R behind his name. A patriot stands against the tide and does what is right. It is time for conservatives to ignore the party regulars who are falling in line behind the liar who hates conservatives and run our own candidate. It may be short term pain but could preserve the union.

Ann Coulter is right
Ann Coulter has it right. As scary as this may sound...Hillary would be more predictable than McCain.

McCain is unstable, mean and vindictive.

McCain is not conservative. Judge his actions and think past the "hero" image.

Real American hero's don't under mind the Constitution.

What conservatives really believe
There are three basic conservative assumptions.

1) Belief in a Transcendental Moral Order at the Heart of Reality:
a) God has created a "transcendental moral order or code"
b) God works through human history to reveal his moral order through both "right reason" and revelation.

2) Belief that man's nature is flawed by evil and
ignorance
a) Man's nature is evil, low and base.
b) Society and its institutions must restrain man's base nature.

3) Belief in simple, supernatural cause
a) An invisible hand guides the free market
b) Wise tradition is distilled from thousands of years of human experience.

The basic problem for conservatives
At the heart of the dispute between the traditionalists and the libertarians is the question of freedom and virtue. Should virtuous action (however we define it) be compelled, or should it be left up to the free and voluntary choice of the individual?

Frank Meyer's most important contribution to conservatism was his emphasis that to be virtuous in any meaningful sense,a man's actions must be free. It is not simply that freedom and virtue are both important, and that one hopes that freedom of choice will lead to virtuous actions. The point is more forceful: no action can be virtuous unless it is freely chosen.

The basic problem for conservatives, then, is that morality and liberty are incompatible, given man's inherently low base and evil nature.

McCain is dangerous for the country
McCain has no honor in his body! He was a navy brat growing up and has never changed. Read his biography, not his book.
There were many heroes in Viet Nam who over showded
him. In the hero evaluation on a scale from one to 10, 10 being high (Audy Murphy,) McCain is a shakey 1.
He was a spoiled brat growing and without his fathers friends protecting him He would not made it through to retirement.
He hates everyone more successful than him> He is a democrat in this hatred. He never at a bite of food not paid for by the government until he married a wealthy woman like John Kerry.
He back stabbed the troops by interfering in the duties of the buildup to the war.
He gave aid and comfort to the enemy by accusing them of tortore every chance he got.
He also undercut the President by taking up his deals with the high brass against everything.
He; as much as the democrats are responsible for the resistance in Iraq.
There is much more about McCain than the media will not tell about their Darling!!

Reagan and McCain
Reagan never conflated his two stump speeches. I know because I listened very carefully. So, the question that Reagan never had to answer was this:

Suppose that a couple were truly Christian, believers, virtuous and poor: why were they poor?

The McCain Shelter for conservatives
A battered spouse always freaks out when faced with the prospect of seeking a sane life. Conservatives who are afraid of McCain are reacting emotionally to the abuse of conservative talk radio.
