Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The stars in the heavens and a virtual sex page scandal aligned perfectly this election season to give Democrats perhaps their best opportunity in years to fulfill their dream of taking back the House and (in their wilder dreams) the Senate, too. So how on earth are they going to spin it when they fail?

I don’t know that Democrats will fail to take control of the House or Senate, but my gut, and the way the pendulum appears to be swinging this week, tell me that the GOP is likely to retain control. Obviously it could go either way. There is no way to know how many more “surprises” are left in the final days of October, and even a week is an eternity in politics. Consider, for example, the Bush DUI revelation just days before the 2000 election. When “surprises” break late there is little time for candidates to react and the fallout can determine the results of an election.

With that qualifying disclaimer made, I am going to go out on a limb and predict the GOP, barring any surprises, will hold Congress, although slimly. If that happens it will be incredibly interesting to see how Democrats react to such a result and how they, and their media organs, spin it.

With Nancy Pelosi declaring she will have any suite she wants after November and most pundits having declared a Democrat victory months ago, stakes in the expectations game couldn’t get any higher. Mark Steyn described the election night many pundits have predicted as a scene with “Speaker-Designate Nancy Pelosi… doing the Landslide Lambada with Senate Majority Leader-Designate Harry Reid.” Anything less than a Democrat takeover of the House and Senate will have to be seen as falling short, although a House takeover making Pelosi the first ever woman Speaker would be celebrated by the media as the biggest story since 9/11.

If Democrats don’t win in this climate, with all the help they have received from the media, I just wonder what hope they have to ever retake control?

The network news programs have worked overtime to push the perception that America is in a sorry state under Republican leadership. Even stories on sharp decreases in gas prices have been presented in a negative way with network news reporters floating wild conspiracy theories about the drop being tied to the upcoming elections.

Meredith Vieira on The Today Show introduced one of her segments this week as follows: “You know the good news is that gas prices are down but do the elections have anything to do with it? In other words are we being manipulated?" Reporter Carl Quintanilla followed with a segment about what he said some see as “a vast right wing conspiracy that leads right from the pump to the booth.” To answer Vieira’s question – yes, we are being manipulated, but it is not manipulation orchestrated by an evil Rovian plot, but rather by people like her in the media.

CNN has been doing their part for the Democrats for years, but really stepped it up this month by airing a terrorist propaganda video of snipers in Iraq shooting American soldiers. They defended the decision to air the video as a desire to show the “unvarnished truth” of war. It seems the “unvarnished truth” of partial birth abortion, the record-setting Bush economy, and other truths that might cause voters to look favorably on Republican policies don’t need to be shown.

Oprah even chipped in to the effort this month by having Bush-bashing book author Frank Rich on to discuss “Truth in America” and the Dixie Chicks on to discuss their movie, Shut Up and Sing.

I learned from the Oprah show that the Dixie Chicks’ free speech has been stifled mercilessly by some red state types so you probably haven’t heard, since they have been silenced and all, but the Chicks don’t care much for President Bush, or for war (or for the fans who made them multi-millionaires). The Chicks interview, airing less than two weeks before the election, painted a picture of a scary America in which citizens were not allowed to express their displeasure with the mean Republicans getting our kids killed in Iraq and letting people drown in Katrina.

I don’t know whether or not Democrats will pull off their expected control shifting wins this time around (though my prediction is they won’t), but I do know that if they don’t, they will have one heck of a problem spinning the failure as anything other than a complete disaster considering all they had going in their favor this time around. If Nancy Pelosi fails to get that office suite she is counting on, what Democrats will have to worry about more than how they will spin the loss though is how they will hope to win in the future.

If they want the advice of a member of the opposition, then I am glad to oblige. If Dems aren’t successful this time around, next time they might want to try (1) running on an actual agenda, (2) running against someone who is actually on the ballot (hint: George Bush is not), and (3) refusing the help of far left kooks. My prediction is that the candidates that followed those tips this time around will be the ones celebrating on November 7. It just remains to be seen whether enough of them were Democrats to allow Nancy Pelosi to start slinging those fabric swatches.

If the Dems win -

The American people have spoken, etc.

It's time to take America back from the (fill in the blank)

yada yada yada

If they lose -

MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD

Don't forget the Dems rampant fraud
I am concerned about the Democrats' rampant fraud here in my state. Voter ID is NOT a requirement, and THOUSANDS of bogus addresses have been found to be registered on the voter rolls. Our crooked Democrat governor doesn't WANT to curb fraud, because the Dems all know that THAT'S what gets them elected.

Democrats in my state cheat, lie, and fraudulenly vote. If my family wasn't here, I'd move to a state where fraud isn't so blatant.

Maybe even with all the cheating here, the Republican will win the race for Governor. One can only vote and pray.

Mountain Rose....
I agree with most of what you said, except for the "deserve to lose" comment.

I'd submit that, given the circumstances you named, conservatives might be "expected" to lose, but no one "deserves" what a Dem controlled Congress would bring.

Heck, I wouldn't even wish THAT on the Mexicans!! :)

The dems will lose in November
I beleive the dems WILL lose in November. I absolutely don't believe a word the MSM says about anything. How will the MSM spin the loss is probably a greater question; given that they have been reporting "FACTS" that turned out to be incontrovertably wrong . . . again.

Just get off your couch and vote!
Like Mountain Rose said, conservatives MUST get out and vote, so do it. We participated in early voting for the first time. It is great that we will not have to wait in long lines at our local precinct.

In spite of the incredibly
incompetent performance by the Repubs ( I think everyone knows my opinion of that), as I also constantly write the only poll that counts takes place on Nov 7 (Nov 8 for Dems), and since "all politics is local" I still maintain the news of the death of the Republican majority is vastly overstated.

I agree with Byrd's analysis.

Been hearign this since 2000
I remember when Bush won in 2000; the democrats swore they'd get even in 2002. Their base was energized like never before and 2002 would be Gore's revenge. Instead they lost control of the Senate.

2004 was going to be the year that the Bush was pushed out of office and the Senate might be retaken, who would vote for Bush after getting us in to the Iraq war? Bush is elected again and takes a majority of the vote - first president to do so since 1988. They also gain seats in the House and Senate.

Given the history of democrat predictions of massive victory they'll be lucky if they aren't reduced to forming a coalition with the Green Party in 2012 just to make the ballot in some states.

She's right, you know.
Polls oversample Democrats. I think this is mostly because what makes a good Republican voter makes a good telemarketing prospect---so if the phone rings, and it's some number Gerry GOP Voter doesn't know, the caller generally gets to talk to the machine.

I see a lot of Diebold stories coming out in the last few days: Back in 2004,about the time the internal polls stopped looking so good for the Dems, it became All Diebold All the Time in the mainstream media.

Goon
Don't you know, 2004 Bush WAS pushed out of office. The Republicans/neocons/religious right wingers/little green men with tin foil hats/Barney were all in cahoots and cheated!

I think the Dems will take control, but that doesn't mean I'm not fighting for them to lose. I've just about got my liberal daughter who will be voting in her first election ready to vote Republican. I'm crossing my fingers.

Republicans win - Pelosi speaker
I agree - I think the Republicans will win by a slim margin. But then they will feel sorry for the Dem's and in an attempt to be liked 1 or 2 will turn and vote for Pelosi for Speaker (remember Jefferts). It wouldn't surprize me in the least.

Expect Furious Litigation
if the Dems do not retake Congress. Any margins less than 2 percent will be challanged with Gore style recounts. It could get ugly.

Dems are repugnant losers
Smart $ is the House and Senate will remain R after 11/7. The Leftys are slowly awakening from their vacation from reality, and as they do they are starting to realize that they have been in a trance, caused by their childlike belief in their own PR as well as the inability to formulate any policies or plans to run on besides BDS and that also afflicts the parasitic Left Media also. The noise will change to blaming their failure on everything except the actual reason. My question is how long the Demo-rats and their Media-rat buds will continue to exist after they have shot themselves in the foot for the 4th straight election. Maybe they will finally move to their favorite haults: CUBA, Canada, France, Russia, Vietnam, Mexico...etc.

My point exactly....
I have been saying for months now, that the Dems are starting their shenanigans earlier this time. Start with the talking points and when they lose, and they will, they have already programmed the 'useful idiots' to demand recount after recount. It is their very own sweet way to demoralize the voting public. And don't forget the next chapter.... "the Republicans did not win, they were appointed" and on and on and on. It is the condition of todays politics...brought to you by the Clinton War Machine....and that beast from the NY Senate Make no mistake....this kind of spinning has their hoof prints all over it.

No More Moderates!
Mountain Rose,

Why would we want to take the moderates in? We have way too many now.

D@%N!

I cannot believe that conservatives are going to stay home and let the dems win! I think we have more sense than to believe all the doom and gloom we hear and read. As an election judge out here in the boonies of the Texas Panhandle, I am encouraging everyone I know to vote. Everyone I have talked to either are planning to do so or already have by absentee ballot, none are planning on staying home. I believe when the people speak on Tuesday November 11, 2006 we will be reassured that the conservative ideology is alive and well!

Jer: ROTFLMAO
How about the Rovemobile? It's reliable; it's a Haliburton product.

BrianR - ROFL
As the FG Pope once said, "that car can't solve all your problems, Peter".

BrianR
No use trying to escape in the Rovemobile, my friend. The lefties can certainly run you down in the moonbatmobile. The moodbatmobile travels at warptruth speed.

Pistol..
..that was GREAT!!

I wonder...
...what kind of -mobile that Mayor Adam West drives? ;)

Pistol, that WAS great!
LOL

Advice #4 ...
Become conservative and stand up for the Constitution instead of standing against it with all these socialist ponzi schemes ...

Mountain Rose ...
...This is an important election, and it is OURS to lose or to win.

The only way that they can win is IF CONSERVATIVES LET THEM! If we believe their lying lips and let them discourage us into staying home from the polls, we deserve to lose....

Without reading further into your comment (which I will after posting this), I must disagree.

This election is the Donks' to win or lose.

That being said, look for them to lose by virtually any measure.

Now back to reading the rest of your comment ...

...
...But if we are too lazy to get up off our duffs and vote, we deserve the consequences!...

Amen, MountainRose!

Still, we really need to present actual conservative candidates to the voting public instead of these RINOs/CINOs.

RWR

RightWingRocker
If there is one thing the mixed bag of right wing nuts agree upon, it is your last paragraph. The conservative wing of the R voters CAN over ride the strategerists (as Rush would say) in the RNC and the RSCC. These guys often like RINOs because they would rather have a Chaffee than a Dumpster... I mean Demster. (Keep me straight, Rose). The rub is that they often pick moderates where a conservative would have as good or better chance to be elected. I can grudgingly see a RINO rat like Chaffee being in there even if his only function is to add to the R caucus. Could be the best we can do from RI. I'm glad i don't have to choose voting for Chaffee or Mr. Fringe. But abandoning Katherine Harris was stupidly short-sighted. Her opponent is arguably the best liked politician in Florida and her chances were never more than slim. But her small chances were damaged by her treatment from the state and national GOP. Its going to be up to the grass root base, we conservatives, to make certain from now on we have candidates we can vote FOR, rather than "not against". I have not been active in primaries, but those days are over for me and i hope for a lot of disgruntled conservatives.

Maczed
If you like zany sendups, check out Jimmy Carter and BrianR sites for Evolution and Give pies a chance. Maybe you already have, if so, aren't they great?

Jimmy Carter
...is a poster whose thoughts I pair up with the ex-prez Carter and that pairing gives me the giggles everytime.

It's because it's funny to match up insightful, funny thinking with that peanut farmer's face. The two don't go together.

Peanut Jimmy
The Peanut presidency was a real trajedy. Carter was honest and amongst the most scholarly of 20th century presidents. He wound up tangled in his own underwear by trying to be everything to everybody. Now, at the end of his life, there is nothing left of him. He is a caricature, nourished only by approval from those just as unfocused and shallow as he is. A monument to good intentions, well on the road to a destination even more uncomfortable than the road of good intentions he is treading.

“TAXCUT AND SPEND” REPUBLICANS…

“TAXCUT AND SPEND” REPUBLICANS have absolutely zero fiscal responsibility! The last time we had a balanced budget and pay-as-you-go legislation Bill Clinton was President and the Democrats instituted these Congressional controls. So much for Bush mythology on who has conservative values. Furthermore, Bush’s supply-side economics has not conserved our economic future.

SUPPLY-SIDE ECONOMICS… has sold our kids and grandkids down the river!

George Bush’s $3 trillion dollar tax giveaway to the rich has been a disaster for average Americans. Supply-side (trickle-down) economics is a bogus theory promoted by those who benefit from it. In a mature capitalist system, supply side never rules, it’s always the demand side of the equation that governs growth and well-being. Think about the 1930s Depression, General Motors had plenty of supply, but demand evaporated.

Previous U.S. recessions have been cured with only $200 billion in tax cuts targeted to the middle class, because the consumer (the great middle class) spends that tax cut and primes the economic pump. But George Bush has raised the debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay from almost $6 trillion to almost $9 trillion for this current recovery, which is uniquely without wage gains, and which has shrunk the middle class that makes America strong and great.

Corporations (the supply side) are now loaded with cash, but there’s no place to spend it because they don’t see any demand. So many corporations are using that cash to buy back their stock – WOW, isn’t supply side wonderful in how it fulfills America’s needs? As the rich-poor divide increases, we’re headed toward previous shining examples of trickle-down economics: South America of the recent past and feudalism in the Middle Ages (South America and feudalism also had no wage gains).

Taxcut does work... "It is the SPENDING"
I agree that the term “TAXCUT AND SPEND” REPUBLICANS… could be used. However what you fail to include in this tem is “AND SPEND DEMOCRATS”. One must not forget that even with a political party in the majority, it takes two to “tango”. If my memory has not failed me, it was a conservative Republicans lead congress under Bill Clinton whom tried to control runaway spending. This is one reason many conservative Republicans are dishearten by our Republican politicians today. The only real difference that separates the Republicans and the Democrats is that Democrats look at TAXCUT as some sort of “EVIL GIVEAWAY” plan, while Republicans believe it is your hard earn money. Now if Republicans can just go on a “SPENDING DIET”.
