Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Prompted by Condoleeza Rice’s reponse to Bill Clinton’s theatrical production on Fox News Sunday over the weekend, Hillary Clinton came out Tuesday in defense of her husband’s record on terrorism in an effort to establish Democrats’ credibility on the issue. She is going to have to come up with something more persuasive if she wants to convince voters that Democrats can be trusted with national security.

“I think my husband did a great job in demonstrating that Democrats are not going to take these attacks,” Clinton said. “All you have to do is to read the 9-11 Commission (report) to know what he and his administration did to protect Americans and prevent terrorist attacks against our country… I’m certain that if my husband and his national security team had been shown a classified report entitled ‘Bin Laden determined to attack inside the U.S.’ he would have taken it more seriously than history suggests it was taken by our current president and his national security team.”

When I saw a clip of Hillary Clinton making that statement I found myself talking to the television. I told Hillary (well, her television image anyway) that her hubby didn’t need a classified report to tell him that bin Laden was determined to attack inside the U.S. He already knew it because we had already been attacked by al Qaeda on U.S. soil -- at the World Trade Center in 1993.

Bob Owens responded similarly to Hillary Clinton’s statement, but with specifics I’d never heard. Owens described the 1993 World Trade Center attack as the “first-and-to-date only WMD attack in America by al Qaeda and Iraq-affiliated terrorists.”

“Ramzi Yousef, a Kuwaiti-born al Qaeda terrorist using an Iraqi passport, concocted a plan to detonate a large ammonium nitrate bomb in the basement-level parking decks of WTC 1. The primary intent was to have the foundation of Tower 1 compromised, toppling it into WTC 2, bringing both buildings down and killing as many as possible of the 50,000 people who worked there… Yousef was assisted by Iraqi bomb maker Abdul Rahman Yasin…who retreated to Iraq after the attack and lived under Saddam Hussein's protection and with his financial support until the 2003 invasion.”

What Owens detailed, which has not been widely reported, is that Yasin's bomb included a chemical component, cyanide, which was intended to form a poisonous cloud after detonation to travel through the ventilation system in the tower. Although several people were killed in the 1993 attack, the plan failed in its goal to topple the towers and carry out a poisonous chemical attack.

Owens states the fact that Hillary Clinton’s husband hoped to disguise with bluster: “Bill Clinton was President of the United States when lower Manhattan was the victim of an al Qaeda plot executed by an Iraqi bomb-builder who detonated a chemical/conventional weapon under tens of thousands of Americans. President Clinton later knew what the bomb was composed of, knew how it was intended to be used, and what threat al Qaeda posed…Bill Clinton was President for another 7 years, 10 months, 25 days after this attack.”

We know what Bill Clinton did, and didn’t do, to combat terrorism after that attack. As for what a President Hillary or a Democrat-controlled congress would do to fight terrorism, what they refuse to do today, even after 9/11, tells me all I need to know about what they would do if they were in control.

In August a massive terrorist plot was thwarted in the UK in part thanks to information obtained through the use of “sneak and peek” warrants and from U.S. intelligence which provided London authorities with intercepts of the terrorist group's communications.

Although the Democrats’ rhetoric in opposing the NSA surveillance program and the Patriot Act temporarily lessened when it was learned how the UK plot was thwarted, they have consistently opposed those and other tools needed to effectively combat terrorism. Less than a year ago Minority Leader Harry Reid even boasted that "'We killed the Patriot Act.”

Another position which calls into question the Democrats’ judgment on matters of national security is the call by many to abandon the effort in Iraq before the mission has been completed. Many Democrats rushed to embrace the NIE report declassified this week, but chose to ignore passages of the report which indicate that a withdrawal at this time would have a negative effect on the war on terror.

If Democrats want to convince voters they can be trusted with national security they will need to come up with more than a blustery Bill Clinton.

Shame on you Ms. Byrd
Lorie Byrd writes: "In August a massive terrorist plot was thwarted in the UK in part thanks to information obtained through the use of “sneak and peek” warrants and from U.S. intelligence which provided London authorities with intercepts of the terrorist group's communications."

Ms. Byrd is attempting to plant the idea in her readers heads that this is evidence that Bush's warrentless wiretapping program, which Democrats oppose, saved British lives. This is supposed to be an example of how Dems are weak on terror.

However Ms. Byrd is intentionally glossing over a key piece of information: the Brits GOT WARRANTS!! In other words, it shows the Dems are right when they say we can track terrorists AND still have checks and balances.

This is typical Republican BS. So let me try to straighten this out for you: Democrats WANT the phone calls of terrorists to be monitered. But they also want the President to get a warrant. They want there to be checks and balances because, otherwise, there is a huge potential for abuse. It would mean that the President could tap anyone's phone he wants to, and no one would ever know about it. Some of you might think it's okay if W does this, but ask yourselves: would you be confortable with Hillary having that power? Another problem with warrantless wiretaps is that they violate a specific statute on the books passed by congress called FISA, which raises issues of separation of powers and checks and balances.

It is quite simply a lie to say that Dems don't want to listen in on the phone calls of terrorists. But Ms Byrd doesn't care about that. She wants you people to believe that Dems don't care about the security of the country. I think what she, and other Republicons are doing is shameful and disgusting, and it reveals a person is more loyal to her party than to her country.

Not on my watch Ms Byrd!

Phylo out.

they don't get it
In these perilous times every single election (every 2 years) is about national security. I am not crazy about the jobs the republicans are doing and am always willing to look to see if the dems have a serious alternative.

So what do they do? In Connecticut they vote out one of the few serious Democrats, Joseph Lieberman, and there standing on the victory dais behind ned lamont are jesse jackson and al sharpton.

And they want us to take them seriously.

memo to dems - take a quote from one of your heroes - "America has serious problems and we need serious people to solve them." President Andrew Shepard

Um Phylo...
...if the Brits got warrants, they got them from British courts. If they used information from our terrorist surveillance program they did nothing to actually gather that intel, they benefitted from the work done here by the NSA. What goes on British courts and how they handle their terror threats have nothing to do with what we do here.

As for the Dems wanting to monitor jihadist phone calls, they have astrange way of showing it. Instead of acknowledging the limited scope of the program, and the fact that it monitored calls going to and from suspected terrorists to people in this country, they painted the program as a the big, bad government spying on American citizens. They knew the characterization was not true but pushed it anyway for political gain. That does not seem to me to be the way you act if you really want to prevent terror attacks.

the Dems don't care..
..about anything but re-gaining power..not about you or me. Anything to undermine and condemn Bush, they'll do it. If it means pampering the terrorists, they'll do it. If it means jeopardizing our country at a time of war, they'll do it. If it means aligning themselves with the haters of this country (UN comes to mind), they'll do it. On and on it goes. Nothing is out of bounds for them. Up is down, right is wrong, it doesn't matter, all that matters is gaining power and changing this country to some kind of world/global socialistic utopia in their mind.

Good people be assaulted (Ashcroft, Bolten) it would be unbelievable if it wasn't happening right in front of our eyes. We need to all see with our eyes wide open what the Dems are doing and not doing that effect this war, to undermine the President. Desent is one thing.. treason is another. The Clintons want the Whitehouse again, President Billary, just think on that.

It's scary to fathom if they do.

Stupid is as stupid does

Your ignorance of the British legal system is breath taking. The British don't require warrants for search and seizure of terrorism suspects.

See the Terrorism Act 2000 and the Crime and Security Act 2001.

Do site pests contribute to Townhall?
I’m so glad Phyo Seltzer can straighten it all out. Just what this site needs another demonRat shout at us her truth. I wonder if she donates to Townhall or just abuses it and the people on its' site? Her talking points indicate she doesn’t have a original idea floating around in her brain matter.
Not on your watch Phlo? On your watch your party went to crap. The brightest have left it all you have left on your side is greed and stupidity. You manipulate your bashing of the President and Republicans to fit your rage. You are a provoker, nothing more, nothing less. You don’t even have the intelligence to realize you incrementally drive people away from the ideology you espouse. You serve Republicans well, fool. FISA was nothing but a stupid give away of Presidential powers by a dimwitted peanut grower who destroyed our economy and prestige in one short, booted out of office, term.

Hockey Goon
Don't bother with the facts. They only confuse good old Phylo... they don't match up to his Dim talking points.

Bankruptcy on the left
Although Great Britain is obtuse in the area of gun control and certain economic policies, they are very sophisticated and aggressive in the area of intelligence gathering and counter-terrorism.

In our country there is simply no question that the left is suffering from a paucity of credible ideas on national security, and, as such, they can't be taken seriously when they argue to the contrary.

Enemies in our face!
As a Conservative, I have changed my attitude toward Liberals. I used to think that Liberals were just Americans with different opinions than mine. And like most Conservatives posting here, expressing tolerance and understanding. I would attempt to engage them in a civilized discussion about the nations problems. In the hope that they would see the error of their way.

But over the years I've run out of tolerance! And have learned that all the talk in the world will not change their socialistic agenda. They have proven to me by their stance and actions, that they are bent on destroying our Republic as laid down by our Founding Fathers.

As a result, all Liberals have become my enemy! A very REAL enemy! Just as bad as the terrorists seeking to destroy us. Worse, because they are the "enemy within." Islamic terrorists are at least honest in expressing their intent.

When their Liberal leaders like the Clinton's, lie and cheat their way into power, the Liberals stand by them no matter what. After all. They are serving the Liberal purpose of converting our nation to socialism.

So..When a Liberal posts on this site. You are looking directly into the face of the enemy.

response to Hockey Goon
Hockey Goon said "Your ignorance of the British legal system is breath taking. The British don't require warrants for search and seizure of terrorism suspects."

Phylo: I googled "British terrorism warrants" and one of the first things that came up was from the San Jose Mercury Aug 20th, 2006. It says:

"When it comes to surveillance and wiretapping, the British laws share some basic features with those in the United States.

Investigators in Britain, like their counterparts here, may intercept phone calls and eavesdrop on private conversations, but only under what authorities there describe as a system of ``strict control and oversight'' that includes individual warrants."

Ah, forgive me for calling your vast and deep knowldege of the British legal system into question Hockey Goon, but this would appear to directly contradict your assertion. Gee, why am I not surprised.

Oh, and as for the rest of you Cretins, I don't repond to generic, ad hominum attacks on liberals or the left. They are stupid and boring.

Phylo out

another response to Hockey Goon
Famed British legal scholar Hockey Goon said: Your ignorance of the British legal system is breath taking. The British don't require warrants for search and seizure of terrorism suspects

Phylo: Well Hockey Goon, I did a little more checking and found this Aug 12th article from the dailymail (It's a British publication.).

As MI5 reveals on its website: "The Services does use intrusive investigative methods, such as eavesdropping in a target's home or vehicle.

"However, our use of such methods is subject to a strict control and oversight regime.

"To install an eavesdropping device in a target's home we need to apply to the Secretary of State for a warrant under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) to authorise the intrusion on the privacy of the target."

It adds: "In most cases we must also apply for a 'property warrant' under the Intelligence Services Act 1994 to authorise any interference with the target's property necessary to install the device covertly.

"As with interception, we must convince the Secretary of State that what we are proposing to do is both necessary and proportionate."

Forgive me, Hockey Goon, if I don't take your word at face value from this point on. And let that be a lesson to all you feeble minded followers who were so quick to praise Hockey Goon on his "facts".

Phylo out.

Phylo
The subject is the Clinton interview and his statements. I believe he lied about Monica until exposed by DNA. I believe he is lying about his attitude toward terrorists during the period he could have done something to protect the country. I believe he would, will and is telling lies to advance his personal agenda.

I thought America was at WAR
We are at war with an enemy who could care less about the Geneva Convention. They laugh at us when we hand cuff ourselves trying to abide by our laws and values. When they capture an American do they abide by the laws and values that we abide by? This enemy does not seek approval from some court room, or a treaty signed by countries on how they will treat Americans. They will torture, kill, and destroy without any concerns about the rights of anyone who they deem are their enemy. Why do we debate about how we treat those whom want to destroy us? I can not believe that elected US officials will debate in the halls of congress the rights of those who will kill us. The mantra of “how the world will view us” is insane. The world already hates us, so granting rights to those who want to kill us benefit us how? Those who wrongfully believe that our government must treat our enemy with rights, makes fighting this war more problematic. Sadly some do not believe we are at WAR.

Apples and oranges
I am late to reading the comments on this column, but just read Phylo's following comment:

"Lorie Byrd writes: "In August a massive terrorist plot was thwarted in the UK in part thanks to information obtained through the use of “sneak and peek” warrants and from U.S. intelligence which provided London authorities with intercepts of the terrorist group's communications."

Ms. Byrd is attempting to plant the idea in her readers heads that this is evidence that Bush's warrentless wiretapping program, which Democrats oppose, saved British lives. This is supposed to be an example of how Dems are weak on terror.

If Phylo had read a little more carefully he/she would have realized I mentioned two separate things. One was "sneak and peek" in the UK and the other was US intelligence in the form of intercepts. The Brits did not get warrants (!!, as Phylo wrote) for the U.S. intercepts. Follow the link provided in the column. I did not intentionally mislead Phylo. I thought I made the distinction clear, and on second reading, still do. No shame here.
