Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This week the once-esteemed Columbia University will host another speaker in its on-going “Conversations with Islamo-Fascists" series. I can hear the speaker’s introduction music now:

You can reach me by caravan,
Cross the desert like an Arab man
I don't care how you get here,
Just get here if you can

This is the second time that Columbia University has invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak on their campus. His first speech was canceled because of security concerns. No, not security concerns over inviting a terrorist to an American university, but concerns that they couldn’t guarantee the safety of the terrorist.

Rest assured that Columbia doesn’t discriminate. In fact, they would also welcome European anti-Semitic mass murderers. Columbia Dean John Coatsworth told Fox News, “If Hitler were in the United States and wanted a platform in which to speak he would have plenty of platforms to speak in the United States. If he were willing to engage in debate and discussion to be challenged by Columbia students and faculty, we would certainly invite him.”

I can just imagine the hard-hitting questions the faculty will ask Ahmadinejad. I can think of at least one challenge that Columbia Professor Nicholas De Genova may have for him. At a 2003 “teach-in,” De Genova said, “I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus.” For the Columbia students that missed that lecture, De Genova was referring to the 1993 incident in which the bodies of American soldiers were dragged through the streets in Somalia.

De Genova would demand, "President Ahmadinejad, how many Mogadishus would you like to see? Answer the question!" If he says any number less than a million, he’s clearly a tool of Halliburton or Fox News. (I was never that good with following the radical left’s logic.)

It’s actually more likely that De Genova thinks Ahmadinejad is a hero. At the same teach-in, De Genova also said the “only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military.”

In response to criticism for giving Ahmadinejad a forum, Columbia President Lee Bollinger said it was part of “Columbia’s long-standing tradition of serving as a major forum for robust debate.” The Ahmadinejad defenders tout the importance of free speech. Their defense is completely laughable because college campuses have become institutions with zero respect for free speech. This is like Sarah Brady touting the Second Amendment when she bought her 22-year-old son a rifle for Christmas.

The “free speech” defense doesn’t seem to extend to conservative speakers. In December 2001, three student groups at Columbia organized an independently-funded lecture by author Ann Coulter. I worked with the students in helping them schedule the lecture and secure funding. The day of the lecture, administrators changed the location of the room because of threats from liberal campus protestors. Nearly two-thirds of the audience didn’t find the room until after the lecture was finished. As the question and answer session began, protestors booed and shouted to the point where neither the speaker nor the questioner could hear one another. That’s the Left’s idea of a “dialogue.” It’s not enough that they not listen to opposing views, they must deny others the opportunity, too. Perhaps they should rename the department the Hugo Chavez School of Journalism.

Several weeks after the lecture, the student organizer called me in a panic because Columbia was threatening to withhold his degree because a bill for two security officers assigned to the lecture wasn’t paid. However, several witnesses, including the speaker, noted that there was not a security presence at the lecture. Perhaps campus security couldn’t find the new location either.

As any organization that sponsors conservative speakers on college campuses know, the security scam is a frequent dirty trick used by liberal administrators in order to intimidate students. As with Columbia, they tell the conservative groups that because our speakers are so “controversial,” the students must pay for additional security. Jason Mattera of Young America’s Foundation wrote about one of the most infamous cases of the security scam, “In 2000, when Charlton Heston was requested, student organizers were told they needed to pay for a bomb-sniffing dog, ten police officers, two full-body metal detectors, two metal detector wands, a paramedic team, and four pints of Mr. Heston’s blood type.”

Let’s not forget that the reason some conservative speakers need security is to protect them from violent liberals. In response to both Ann Coulter and Dinesh D’Souza being invited to speak on campus by conservative groups, a writer for The Columbia Spectator wrote, “Crackpots like D'Souza and Coulter should be afraid to open their mouths on a campus with such a proud left-wing history.”

Obviously, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has nothing to be afraid of when he speaks at Columbia. Later that day he’ll participate in a videoconference at the National Press Club. In case there was any doubt, he would be safe there, too.

It’s obvious that the Columbia University administrators didn’t bother to listen to Coulter’s December 2001 speech, “Terrorism and Its Left-wing Sympathizers.” They should also brush up on the classics and read Dante’s Inferno. Here's a place to start: “The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.”

I don't see why
Anyone at Columbia would even want to go listen to this mad man speak. There's nothing new that he's going to say there that he hasn't said before. And most of what he's going to say can be summarized in two words, LIES and PROPAGANDA.
If anyone is foolish enough to think that he won't use his speeches at both Columbia and the UN as propaganda for his insane causes, they're dumber than a box of rocks.
Or in other words, dumber than Robert "Rocky Jones," Hal Donahue, and Lilly(to name just a few) combined.

You're not Ann Coulter...
I can't believe everyone is missing the obvious here. It's great he's coming to Columbia because students will get the chance to grill him about his beliefs. At the very least, students will get to see one of the most controversial figures of our time. Of course some people will automatically say, "Oh but Columbia is too leftist. They'll just welcome him with open arms." Well, I must have missed the news that democrats now agree with radical Islamists just because they want us out of Iraq. Surely we conservatives aren't dumb enough to believe that.

I have to admit though, I'm not at all surprised that Ms. Pasquale wrote this article. Besides the fact her column is always worthless commentary filled with poor attempts at cleverness, no wannabe Ann Coulter would miss the opportunity to bite down on this tasty morsel (I bet she could probably eat Ann if she wanted to).

Anyways, people need to stop getting so worked up over this. However, I'm sure the comments following mine will be filled with "ZOMG!!! COLUMBIA SUPPORTS TEH TERRORISTS!!!!" and other retarded statements. I couldn't expect much more from Townhall.com. After all, it's not like many other places would publish this lame column.

Ryan
You're missing the obvious point here: the political left in this country has a great deal in common with this trousered ape, just as they did with Arafat. Just as Bin Laden's latest release would fit neatly into the Democrats' campaign literature, Ahmadinejad's rants have no real conflict with the beliefs of the Huffington Post readers or those of Moveon.org. Bin Laden sounds like Marx, Marx sounds like Hillary, Hillary sounds like Michael Moore, Moore sounds like Castro, on and on. All of them hate America, therefore I despise all of them.

Too Late For Hitler At Columbia U!
Who's going to be the next speaker at this great institution of lower learning? Who will follow the Iran Nut Job?

Hitler is dead so they can cross him off the speaker list! bin Laden would be the logical choice but he's got this cave thing. Warren Small? He'd fit in perfect.

Now forever to be known as the College of Dumb and Dumber, Columbia U. still has some other gems lined up, I bet. Sean Penn, Rosie O'Donnell and Keith Olbermann? Columbia could put them on a triple bill. Can you hear Lee Bollinger's introdution. "Students of Columbia..... Please give a warm Columbia welcome to the American Axis of Evil....... Those madcap, mental giants.....Sean, Rosie and Keith."

If only this were a joke. But in 2007, it's reality at Columbia U.

Can't we all just get along?
Ryan,

Thank you for your thoughtful note. I too will be interested in the reception that Ahmadinejad will receive at Columbia.

I do have a few questions that you may be able to clear up. What questions do you think that the students who are admitted to the speech will ask? What questions will be asked that have not been asked before? What answers do you believe will be different? In what way do you think the students and faculty beliefs are different from Ahmadinejad? Do you deny the quotations from De Genova in the article? Would that not imply that both men want the defeat of the US and the death of American troops?

Your later disparagement of Ms. Pasquale and this web site is mean-spirited and I hope it is not representative of Columbia students.

Ryan you tard
How do you miss the entire point of the article?

Well,
The point to me is not who the speaker is, but will the talk allow challenges by the students. That’s the key. No challenge (or a rigged audience) means the talk is just propaganda.

Warren Small
Thought I'd offer you first refusal on my land in Florida. Its real nice right on the water, great view and water is available right on site. I'm sure you won't mind the dampness and alligators. The cyprus knees are right pretty.

pirouettes
It is funny watching the author bounce back and forth between the ideas that it is bad that Columbia is letting Ahmadinajed speak, and it is bad that liberals object to people they disagree with speaking.

This is a kind of constant in conservative criticism of "political correctness." Since conservatives don't tend to have a problem with stopping other people from speaking, they only object to having people of their own views prevented from speaking, their attacks on liberals for political correctness tend to come out odd since they don't really believe in the principles they are using in the argument.

Students at Columbia should have the option of hearing Coulter and Ahmadinajed (although it would not likely be fruitful to have them speak together). Conservative criticism of political correctness would come off as more convincing if conservatives believed that as well. It undercuts the message when most of the argument is devoted to people who shouldn't be allowed to speak.

MikeR
Sorry Mike it is a propaganda victory for Amad either way. He will tell the left just what they want to hear or avoid answering the question at all.

Telling the left what they like to hear will help sow more confusion especially among the left giving anti-war zealots more ammo which will buy him time to build nukes.

By not answering the questions he doesn't want to he can play up his ability to stand up to the dolts at so called prestiges ivy school.

Either way the man is getting credibility that should not be his.

NYC DOGG
Lets assume he is a conservative. Conservative in the United States uniformly denounce him for obvious reasons we all should all already know by now. The left has a history of like certain types of leaders. Namely, those who are tyrants and oppress large parts of their populations even though libs claim to be against such things. Don't believe me just ask Castro who he believes his allies are in the U.S. or ask Chavez, Amad himself heck even Saddam had his backers in our congress just ask Michael More.

It is easy to argue your point about how Amad is a conservative like myself.

However, it is much more useful and fun to use your own argument and point out the liberals intellectual and moral vacancy.

Anthony Thomas
Moral Relativism STRIKES AGIAN

Ahmadinejad was on 60 Minutes
Don't townhallers watch television? With so much discussion of A going to Columbia and (it is rumored) Ground Zero, there hasn't been much mention of his appearance last night on 60 Minutes. Up-close and personal in a TV interview, not shown from a distance making a speech, he impressed me in the following ways: 1) He looks like a rat, with the same hard glittering eyes that do not project the slightest warmth; 2) He did not answer questions straight but danced around them; 3) He grinned and laughed throughout the interview to indicate that he found all the questions ridiculous---you may have seen this trick used before, for example Fred Barnes always does this when any Democratic issue is discussed on "The Beltway Boys".

Finding The Cream of The Crop
It is with great interest that I have read recently about Columbia University’s welcome for Ted Kaczynski, The Unabomber, to give a speech there. My dear wife was looking over my shoulder as I wrote to you, and chided me. She said it was Charles Manson they really had invited. I am in my seventies and sometimes I make small mistakes when recollecting things. Then I went back to the article and finally got it straight. I was close. The paranoid schizophrenic Columbia University invited was a fellow named John Coatsworth. Not only, did they invite Coatsworth to speak but saw fit to make him a Dean. You see, when scraping the bottom of the barrel to bring entertainment to the University it becomes quite a chore to find the very best perverted and salacious mentalities with committed opinions to draw a crowd. Indeed, it is a challenge for all Universities today to attract students that match the elite level of the faculty who plan the profile of tomorrow’s leaders. “When you run out of perspective students that hate there parents, where else can you find and recruit the cream of the crop?” the dean of Columbia Law School, David Schizer was heard to say.

For Anthony Thomas:
When your entire education consists of revisionist history, anti-American propaganda and you sleep at night with the Little Red Book, do not expect to get your PhD in ethical subjectivism at TH.com. Most TH posters are intelligence enough to know that your relativistic opinions are just that - mere opinions about alleged facts.

Here is a clue though for your inquirying mind:

Understand what a "self-excepting fallacy" is and you may find some enlightenment. Your entire belief system is based upon it.

"THE UNFORTUNATES"
If you were to go to Iran,no one would call you out of your name.Unfortunately,in America, people participate in name calling, as a way of disguising their "IGNORANCE".Moral outrage does not afford "US" ANY reprieve from being decent. When you call people names,as a method of demeaning their legitimacy, you demean "ALL"Humanity.I certainly "HOPE" that "US" are better than THAT. Ms Pasquale,Mr.Admandinajed is not a "TERRORIST"!He is an Intellectual, who happens to foster and support "TERRORISM".One of the reasons, that we so often lose at our efforts(Militarily and Politically)is we underestimate our ENEMIES.Sometimes, we even fail to recognize who they really ARE.Being emotional is O'KAY for women and children, but not for WORLD AFFAIRS!WE need to THINK,with DIGNITY...

lilly
60 minutes and Columbia are not the same thing. A supposedly prestigious ivy league school denies free speech constantly to anyone that does not politically agree with them I.E. ROTC because of the don't ask don't tell policy. However, they give a platform to someone who supports the killing of homosexuals as a state right FOR SIMPLY BEING HOMOSEXUAL. Do you not see why anyone with an ounce of common since would be rather taken aback by this. Not to mention what Amad says in his speeches to his own people which is a bit different then what he says here.

And, if anyone has paid any attention to columbia's history of actively blocking free speech knows there are many examples.

Good morning, Lilly.
I realize you and I are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but in the case of Ahmadinejad, I have to agree with your assessment. Barnes I can take or leave, but I do see the (somewhat shifty look) comparison.

Unfortunately, Ahmadinejad's outer facade actually does represent the inner soul of the man. He is a rat, albeit a human one. Good post. Take care.

Columbia University is as...
discriminating as a public toilet seat. Any a$$ may deposit its waste and apparently does.

Ryan
Your missing the point you arrogant insufferable think your smarter than everyone snob.

Even a dog does not intentionally defecate in his own bed, yet liberals do it regularly.

Let us take all the tax dollars away from the liberal universities and use it to put liberals in therapy.

What is telling is your crack at the columnist. Touch a sore tooth did she? There wasn't anything in it that isn't well documented and true.

HILLARY,INC. assumes the nom de plumme' "PROGRESSIVE" as if a return of the Wobblies is politically desirable. So goes the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy which has policy grip at Columbia University. These so called "Progressives" are stuck in dialogue with imagery from the 1890's, the Bolsheviks of the 1920's, the Depression era socialists, and the Abby Hoffman-Jerry Rubin Hippies; ergo, the are effectively stuck in backass policies that have never been adopted or accepted by the people here in the United States. The notion of being anti-ROTC makes them believe they are "Peaceniks" and thus they are more involved and committed to the role of international peace then others less fortunate to find acceptance among Ivy League halls of power. Such blatant hubris disgusts this writer and when Columbia University wants to manifest plans for growth and expansion as it is doing now in West Harlem I must resist knowing that resistance is futile. The monolith that is Columbia University devoirs all which stand in its way! Lee Bollinger lives in the netherworld of long term contract as President of Columbia University so the dream works possibility that the legal suits on the Board of Regents will pull the contract, read the contract and fire this jerk pronto is but a mere dream.

NYC DOGG
You most not of seen the 60 minute interview with your buddy Amad. He repeated so many of the liberal talking points he could be running right along with hillery. Heck he sounded like most of the lib posters here at TH.

You are hilarious.

Amadineahad would not be here
except for the nitwit UN.

This visit is no dialogue.

No matter what anyone says, the pres. of Iran isn't going to be influenced.

He thinks this is a joke.

He would NEVER allow free speech or free demonstrations in his country. It's a tyrannical dictatorship pf religion, a theocracy, that the libs. are always so afraid a few evangelicals will impose here. Iranians have no civil rights.

Col. is a private coll. that can invite whom it wishes, but Amadinejad is a slap in the face to the nation as a whole. Col. allowed a bunch of idiot students to shut it down in 1968, and it hasn't been worth the paper a catalog is printing on since.

It bars ROTC and military recruitment on campus under the harebrained rubric that the servives' stance on homosecuals violates the coll.'s interp. of civil rights. Sex. "orientation" was not part of the orig. civ. rights acts and is only part of Col.'s because many u.'s have allowed themselves to be taken over by left-lib. gay staff and culture.

They surely aren't dictated to by cons. philosophy, which they abhor and denigrate.

NYC PUPPY
"You could send them to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia or Kuwaitt - our allies - and they'd get the same treatment - maybe worse in Saudi. This newfound concern by Conservatives regarding homos and women's rights is touching, but as phoney as BeTrayus"

I know of no conservative who believes in or supports any of Amads views. The only people giving him legitimacy and a platform to espouse those views are liberals. Mostly because when he gets a platform like columbia or 60 minutes he sounds just like a liberal. Don't believe? listen to the 60 minutes interview.

Again, The only people who are supporting amad are mostly liberals the ones mostly opposing him are conservatives. THAT FACT CANNOT BE HIDDEN no matter how much you try and change the subject.

The question should be to you is:
Why are supporting someone you believes in executing homosexuals and denying women basic rights.

Outdated terminology
To call the Tyrant of Iran either a liberal or a conservative is silly. But it does point out the need to redefine our political terminology. So-called "liberals," are anything but. Liberalism once stood for an individual's rights vis a vis various forms of restrictive and oppressive governments. One can even say that the liberalism of 40 or 50 years ago was different than that which is paraded beneath the same banner today, as it had to do with trying to rectify social ills. The liberalism of today is almost antithetical to "classic" liberalism, and in fact is closer to fascism (which is one of the reasons they are so quick to jump into the same bed with Islamo-nazis, such as the Achmi-whatever.) "New" liberalism wants to limit the freedom of individuals -- with regards to what they say, what they eat, what they smoke, and how they raise their children. The one defining aspect of the "new" liberals (or the "new" left) is an abiding hatred of America, Israel.

They supress free speech whenever they can.So called liberals defend Columbia's invitation to Achmi-Ihateamericansandjews by citing "free speech," but Columbia does not extend that same right to the ROTC -- and the Minute men were also not allowed to speak when they came to the same campus last year. The "new liberals" (read neo-fascists) are quick to supress any kind of speech that does not support their agenda.Try having a discussion with a "new liberal" about global warming. Even to dare to ask questions about people's actual influence on climate change augurs accusations of being "a global warming denier"-- which is evidently far more outrageous than being a Holocuast denier. One can assume a "global warming denier" would never be invited to speak at Columbia.

Outdated terminology
I agree it is an over simplification however, It is informative to hear what political views he advances to increase the likelihood of achieving his goals. It is rather telling that he prefers that liberals in America have more power.

A Million Mogadishus
I think we are misjudging Professor De Genova. Don't forget the other side of Mogadishu equation. Between 1500 and 2000 Moslem fanatics were killed in the Mogadishu fighting. At that rate we will run out of Moslems long before we hit a million. What Professor De Genova is advocating is a genocide that pales in comparison to any previous. I guess this is his way of eliminating the Islamofacists. I have to admit it would work.

ApolloSpeaks
"The little twisted man is crapping in his pants fearing that his country is next."

Let's hope he's right!

ROFLMAO

De Genova as well as OBL both want more Mogadishu because they view it as American defeat showing weakness an inability to make the sacrifices that they are willing to make.

There is no mistake if you read or hear their speeches on the matter.

Why is it...
that this lunatic's plane wasn't blown out of the sky? He's no different than Yamamoto in WWII, the architect of a war that's killing Americans. He is a legitimate target and should be treated as such.

I noticed the "rat" danced around with his "answers"--he would surely fit in with the Socialist Liberal Party. He will possibly be a running mate for Hillary.

"That hardly answers the question: whta makes this guy ANY different than the leaders of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia - our allies?"

Well heck thats all you want. None of those governments are actively trying to gain nuclear weapons to blow the heck out of an other country. Also many of those governments have brought about reforms especially dealing with womens rights.

Women in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Morocco, Bahrain and Qatar have won political and legal reforms unthinkable a decade ago. Being allowed to vote, hold political office, being business owners, education etc...

Imagine that, This occurred mostly after we the U.S. has become so heavily involved.

Does it need to go further? hell yes! SO do we keep doing whats working or stick our heads in the sand and go back to the status quo as you wish.

MAN THATS FUNNY!!! LOL

It is always possible
that the Iranian President's speech could do several things: reveal to a large audience the true intellectual vapidity of Islamism; show our ever-growing band of skeptics and Mr Ahmedinejad that free speech does reign in the USA; show Ahmedinejad that Americans are real people, not cardboard cutouts; undercut the left's jibe that civil liberties are being repressed here in the name of democracy. Just let it happen.

Many leftists who infest the Columbia School of International affairs are not mainstream "Democrats," but far leftists who despise America with a passion. The leftist professors and instructors there include:

Manning Marable: An embittered black militant, hater of capitalism, and self-proclaimed "anti-imperialist"

Joseph Massad: Told his classes of students that Palestinian terrorist attacks on Israeli CIVILIAN targets are justified

and David Dinkins: Yes, THAT David Dinkins, the guy that Rudy Giuliani saved New York from.

Believe me, you do NOT want to ask Manning Marable and Joseph Massad what they think of Islamism. You won't get the answer you're hoping for.

MarineDad asks: "Why is it...

By whom?

The Executive Branch of the United States Government is forbidden to assassinate foreign heads of state, under an Executive Order first signed by President Ford and re-implemented by every successive President, including our current one.

The fear was that if we declare open season on heads of state, then U.S. presidents could be assassinated much more easily by foreign agents since the U.S. is a much more open society than many of our adversaries are. All other things being equal, it's easier for a North Korean agent to assassinate a U.S. president than it is for a U.S. agent to assassinate Kim Jong-Il.

The enemy if my enemy is my friend.
This is why Columbia U. invited this terrorist, they, like most liberals HATE AMERICA, and will support ANY ONE who advocates our destruction.

hey, what about Ron Paul?
You notice that the Ron Paul loons have been unusually quiet today. They haven't said much about the Ahmedinijad visit. Could this perhaps be the reason:

"When presidential candidate Ron Paul appeared on The O'Reilly Factor Monday, host Bill O'Reilly repeatedly pressed Paul....
"'Do you fear Iran intruding on the whole Persian Gulf if the United States -- as you asked for in the debate last week -- left the region?' O'Reilly demanded.
"'No, I do not fear them as you do,' responded Paul directly....'I see the Iranians as acting logically and defensively'"

http://tinyurl.com/2hgkw7

After today's events, I don't think that Ron Paul claiming that Iran is acting "logically and defensively" is going to sell with the voters. And especially not with Republican voters.

Apparently it sells at Columbia

for bruce
bruce says: "columbia did invite hitler to speak at the university but could only get a third rate Nazi to show up....this was in 1933 some things never change at traitor u."

Sadly, even some other things have not changed either.

From a NY Times news story dated 23 April 1941 (just 7 months before Pearl Harbor):

"Student peace demonstrations, dedicated to keeping the United States out of war, will be held at 11 A.M. today on college and university campuses throughout the country...."

From a NY Times news story dated December 31, 1940 (less than 1 year before Pearl Harbor):

"MADISON, Wis., Dec. 30--A resolution opposing conscription, which condemned 'the elements of reaction found in conscript Army camps,' was unanimously adopted by the National Youth Anti-War Congress in its final session today."

The more things change....

SteveL
Thanks alot!!! I was so happy not to have heard his name!!!

Evil Leftists don't believe in...
...free speech, anti-racism, anti-sexism, or any of their other purported causes. Let facts be presented to a candid world:

"Let’s not forget that the reason some conservative speakers need security is to protect them from violent liberals. In response to both Ann Coulter and Dinesh D’Souza being invited to speak on campus by conservative groups, a writer for The Columbia Spectator wrote, “Crackpots like D'Souza and Coulter should be afraid to open their mouths on a campus with such a proud left-wing history.”

So much for free speech.

As far as anti-racism is concerned, they don't practice it. They create Aunt Jemimah buck tooth characatures of Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice and Uncle Tom characatures of Justice Clarence Thomas. They create cartoons with big-nosed, greedy Jews.

As far as anti-sexism is concerned, they cheer on the most anti-woman, evil, Islamofascist states against the most pro-freedom for men AND women society: The United States of America. Burkas, anyone?

All Evil Leftists really care about is their ill-gotten money and their ill-gotten political power. Greed is their middle name.
