Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Ward Churchill, the controversial University of Colorado ethnic studies professor who likened 9/11 World Trade Center victims to "little Eichmanns," has finally lost his job. CU regents voted 8-1 this week to fire Churchill after a lengthy investigation that revealed a long history of academic misconduct by Churchill, including plagiarism.

But Ward Churchill's story says as much about the university as it does about the man. The wonder isn't that Churchill was fired but that he was ever hired in the first place.

Churchill first came to CU to work in the university's American Indian affirmative action program as an administrative assistant and later lectured on campus for more than a decade. In 1991, the university hired Churchill as a tenured professor in the communications department, even though he did not have a Ph.D.

The university bypassed its usual 6-year process to award tenure because administrators were anxious to have an American Indian on the faculty. But then some Indian groups began to question whether Churchill was actually an Indian after all, which didn't stop the university from appointing him chairman of the Ethnic Studies Department in 2002, again largely on the basis of his putative ethnicity. Churchill finally conceded in 2005, "I have never been confirmed as having one-quarter blood and never said I was."

Nonetheless, Churchill's whole resume is built on race. His official biography posted on CU's website mentions little else but his Indian-ness -- his tribal membership, his work on Indian causes and issues -- as if ethnicity sufficiently qualified him to teach at one of the top state universities in the country.

But apparently, from CU's perspective, ethnicity not only justified whom the university should hire but also the basis on which it should award degrees to some students. In 1997, the university created an Ethnic Studies Department, whose faculty Churchill joined. The department's mission, according to its website: "encourages participatory, experiential, student-centered learning and empowers students to move beyond existing social, cultural, and political paradigms to more inclusive paradigms in which they are the subjects of their own reality."

If it's possible to earn a B.A. in Ethnic Studies at CU after spending four years as the subject of one's own reality, should we really be surprised that the faculty teaching in those programs might create their own reality as well? Of course, that is exactly what Ward Churchill did.

Churchill's fraud was simple and straightforward: He invented facts, falsely claiming, for example, that the United States adopted a racial code to categorize Indians similar to the infamous Nuremburg Laws enacted by the Nazis. He misrepresented others' scholarship, alleging that one scholar had produced evidence that the U.S. Army gave smallpox-infected blankets to Indians in 1837 when the work he cited said nothing of the sort. He plagiarized, copying sections of a pamphlet by a Canadian environmental group in a piece he wrote on Canadian water issues without attribution. He also published articles under false names so that he could then cite them as independent sources for work he published under his own name.

But the University of Colorado has been engaged in perpetrating its own, albeit more subtle, fraud as well. When the university hires faculty members or admits students on the basis of skin color, when it grants degrees in pseudo-academic fields, when its obsession with "diversity" overrides its devotion to learning, it, too, is acting fraudulently. The Ward Churchills of the academic world could not exist without the complicity of the universities that hire them.

CU is by no means alone. A report entitled "How Many Ward Churchills?" by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni suggests, "In colleges and universities across the country, in both traditional disciplines and new-fangled programs, the classes offered and the faculty who teach them are displaying an ideological slant that is frequently as uniform as it is severe."

After the regents' decision to fire Churchill was announced, a group of CU students donned T-shirts proclaiming, "It's not about scholarship . . . It's about politics." The students meant the slogan as an indictment of the process that led to Churchill's firing. But the irony is the words more accurately describe why CU and many other colleges hire the likes of Ward Churchill in the first place.

Forget Churchill
Ward Churchill was inevitable. I am happy to see that someone is going after the system that nourished and encouraged him.

When I was in graduate school, I learned to quietly decode certain words. The word "paradigm" was used almost exclusively by people who were interested in wasting my time. That quote from the Ethnic Studies Department uses it twice in one sentence. Read it again, and imagine spending two years poring over stacks of journal articles written in the same tone.

After a while, I began to wonder if I could learn to write in that same way. How hard could it be? Use run-on sentences, pack them with buzzwords, and say what everyone else says. If I could learn to stop snickering, I might even be able to talk that way. Although I thought about that often, I was never serious about it. Ward Churchill was living one of my cynical fantasies.

Soooo True !!!
OK, Halo, I'm gonna have to break down and agree with you this time. My "Higher Education" experience at San Jose State in the 70's was terrible. I had foolishly thought that the university environment would provide a forum for the open exchange of ideas. Wrong. If you were not left or lefter you were simply shouted down. Quite simply not permiitted to speak. Any and all forms of "weeding out" were permitted and encouraged against those who held conservative notions. There's nothing liberal about liberalism. It's all about conformity.

True, but some hypocrite the messenger
This is not really news. Conservatives and anybody with any sense have been aware of this situation and the academic cesspool we call university.

But what a messenger! Given her posting condemning those of us who would like to have a real national border as "racists," I suspect that Chavez may have made more than a little hay out of the use of identity politics, esp. her identity as a female Hispanic, more than once in her lifetime.

I am sorry, but the lady seems to change her stripes at her convenience. At least this time the message is rational.

HalO
Not bad. I think your post pretty much sums up the current situation, relative to the U.S.'s cultural, moral, and competitive decline. And while the descent may not be precipitous, the trajecory is definitely downward and the destination, definitely someplace we don't want to be.

Conic
I loved your comment about the use of the word "paradigm"--I have the same reaction to it. When I see it, it means I can skip the rest of the article without fear of having missed anything remotely enlightening.

The news reports yesterday focused almost exclusively on Churchill's 9/11 remarks, mentioning only in passing, if at all, that he was fired because of fraud. The MSM is trying very hard to portray his firing as a free-speech issue, when it's nothing of the sort. Churchill is simply a garden-variety liar and cheat who would never been hired in the first place had political correctness not trumped academic integrity--oxymoronic as that term has come to be.

Chavez accurately points out the extent to which higher education has been corrupted by its adherence to a rigidly leftist agenda.

my 2 cents
I would just like to know how long - for how many generations - the males in ward's family have born the last name Churchill.

Just wondering

Status Card?
We have Indian heritage and those who have status cards (in Daddy's generation)wave them freely. Did anyone ever see WC's status card?

Incidentally, one of the fun ways to hack off The Man is to change one's name to something Ethnic and then demand Rights based on the fear of questioning One of Them. I foresee a generation or two of faux Gonzales, Sanchez and Paellas in name only who will eventually bring down the house of cards in the only way that ever truly works: by holding it up to ridicule. The more daring will soon be calling themselves Congolia, Shaquila and Jamalia and daring anybody to say that they are no more Black than they are Martian. I am looking forward to that day.

Conic
"The word "paradigm" was used almost exclusively by people who were interested in wasting my time."

Excellent!!!!

I once caught myself using the word paradigm during a conversation with a colleague.

I was so ashamed and shocked by my actions that I very nearly washed my own mouth out with soap.

And as for
The assertion made by Mr. Churchill that "the United States had adopted a racial code to categorize Indians similar to the infamous Nuremberg Laws enacted by the Nazis", if you study real history (not the made-up kind), you find that there are exactly two instances in which the laws of the United States have ever resembled those of Germany under the NSDAP;

1. The enthusiasm for "eugenics" (the "weeding out" of the mentally challenged, the "genetically inferior", and others deemed a potential "handicap" to future human evolutionary progress), which swept not only the U.S., but the entire developed world, in the period leading up to World War One; and

2. The Safe Streets and Crime Control Act of 1968, aka the "Gun Control Act of 1968" aka "GCA 68", which even its author, Senator Thomas Dodd (D-Conn.) eventually had to publicly admit was taken almost word-for-word from the ban on civilian firearms enacted by the German Parliament in 1934, on the direct orders of Adolf Hitler.

And each time, the "progressives" among us (of the type who rule our coleege campuses now) were all in favor of the laws in question.

Put that in your cigarette and smoke it, Mr. Churchill.

cheers

Overdue firing
Ward Churchill should have been fired the instant it came out that he had plagiarized. Instead, CU dithered.

Students who plagiarize get nailed. They either get an F, if it's a paper, or a 0, if it's a test. A professor who plagiarizes should be fired.

There's a jobs crisis in academia. But instead of doing something about it, our leftist professors would rather bash Bush. What can be done about it is to fire anyone who has done anything questionable, and he should have been fired immediately. There's plenty of unemployed academics waiting in the wings for a job.

Huh?
"encourages participatory, experiential, student-centered learning and empowers students to move beyond existing social, cultural, and political paradigms to more inclusive paradigms in which they are the subjects of their own reality."

Forget paradigm. Is experiential even a word?
Very postmodern.

The bottom line
Quote WC: "I have never been confirmed as having one-quarter blood and never said I was."

This is from a man who was shown with members of AIM all around beatung their drums.

Ms Chavez is right, that fraud and plagarism are the offenses for which he was fired and deserved to be fired.

I can't do it...
I just can't read Chavez any more. I've tried. Her dedication to "open borders" taints all other aspects of her persona and writings. I wish she would get out of this country. The very least she could do for us is STOP claiming to be a Republican. Does she think her readers are that stupid?

I Am Indian!
Today I woke up believing I am an Indian. This psuedo fact now entitles me to a tenured faculty position in beautiful Boulder, Colorado.
Of course, I understand that there are some racists who will oppose my appointment. But with the support of all right thinking people, supportive non-Indian faculty, legal representation, and MSM access, I should be able to overcome such hostility.
The first thing I need to do is get to the campus. Can some reader please send me airfare (one way) so I can take my rightful place in the halls of academia!

Mr Boss
Wait! Before you go, you will need some academic credentials. Let me run into the small tile-covered room down the hall and tear off a bunch from the roll hanging low on the wall.

On ethnic studies programs
The stench of fraud that is hanging over CU’s so-called “Ethnic Studies” programs is reflective of higher education’s perverse obsession with group identity navel gazing and advocacy masquerading as scholarship. Nearly every major university in this country and countless less prestigious institutions have their own version(s) of these academically fraudulent “studies” programs.

These programs are typically so illegitimate in their pretense to meeting the basic standards of scholarly research that they are usually exempted from them, though this is never admitted. Instead, the fig leaf of academic legitimacy is maintained, even to the point where the legions of Ward Churchills out there are allowed to delude themselves and others into believing themselves to be that which they pretend to be. The proof is in the product generated by these tin pot victimization-and-advocacy mills.

Check out any random issue of their presumptively scholarly journals – Black Issues in Higher Education, Black Scholar, Latino Studies Journal, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, Latino Studies Journal, Race & Class – it goes on and on. The “science” on which the garden variety studies illuminated in these rags are based would be comical if not for the realization that this is what passes for scholarship in academia these days. In fact, during my own post graduate studies, my study partners and I used to amuse ourselves during breaks in our own studies by perusing and analyzing the contents of these publications. A good deal of what I learned about legitimate research methodology was acquired through the ad hoc debunking analysis performed on these ludicrous presentations.

Of course, the victimization-and-advocacy industry does not limit itself to the ethnic identity groups. The gender and sexuality sub-category may even exceed the ethnics in terms of its pervasiveness and influence. Check out the galaxy of Women’s journals – there’s enough of them filling up the university libraries alone to deforest the Amazon. Women & Criminal Justice, Women & Environment, Women & Health, Women & Politics, Women & Therapy, Women & Work, Women & Language, are but a few.

I’m not even going to get into the sexual orientation-related studies programs, but trust me, they are out there.

If someone is looking for the single biggest indicator of the rot that has overtaken academia in this country, it is the displacement of classical liberal arts studies and the hard sciences on our most prestigious campuses for this bilge.

Academic credentials and getting a job
As the Human Resource Director for a multi-state southeastern health care provider, there are colleges and universities from which I will not accept applicants. If applicants have attended those schools, their application is DOA. Many of those schools have BIG NAMES.

Parents can spend a lot of money seeing their children graduate from a "name" school, but if that school has a liberal reputation, there are many HR Directors just like me who will not hire them. We need people who can get along and get the job done out here in the real world. We do not need, nor will we tolerate socialists or activists. We simply can not afford to have them in our organization. It's difficult enough to get the job done without having to deal with that sort of thing.

Black Prince
Same here. I looked at a resume last week for a legal position on my staff, where the young lady applicant prominently listed, along with her sterling law degree, her pro bono work on behalf of a couple of radical left wing political groups. The idea that she would even mention this fact, knowing the kind of work we are involved with (wish I could tell you), completely invalidated any positive assumptions one might otherwise have of someone presenting their Ivy League law school diploma. Of course, it goes without saying that it went (metaphorically speaking, of course) into the circular file, but not before we all had a good belly laugh at her (and her mentoring law school’s) expense.

Churchill will be fine

Hey Conic
Good post.

Am I wrong or is "existing paradigms" an oxymoron?

The sad truth
Chavez reports that students protesting Churchill's dismissal wore shirts proclaiming it was about politics and not scholarship.

If only the little saps knew how right they are.

JFP notes that Churchill should have been fired a lot sooner for plagiarism alone, and is correct.

But consider. What did CU do? They thoroughly investigated his heritage TO BE SURE HE WAS NOT A NATIVE AMERICAN before they would fire him.

What would have happened if they sampled his DNA and found he was in fact one-quarter Indian or some other qualifying minority? Would he have been fired for plagiarism alone? The length of the investigation, and its outcome, imply that he would not have been.

So the student protesters were right. It wasn't about scholarship. It was about politics. Specifically, the PC politics of race, aka Affirmative Action.

After all of his plagiarism, treasonous public statements, hateful remarks about the victims of 9/11, the guy was actually fired for being white.

Ward Churchill is NO scholar,
The man has been a fraud for YEARS. Long before the events of September 11th, 2001.

I am just surprised that he might actually be off the taxpayers' dole, wait, he'll file for unemployment, not yet... We're still supporting his sorry self.

I had (at other institutions of "higher" learning) instructors similar to Mr. Churchill. I hated them and hated how they soured the classroom discussions, controlling it and silencing opinions NOT in accord with their own.

I had the pontificate on issues, far beyond their narrow realm of expertise, holding their ego-centric views as the "new" gospel.

Sorry, I may have held the "lit" joint, and the "cup of "koolaide," but I neither puffed, inhaled or even brought it to my lips. I did what I had to to get out of their classes, with a good grade.

wiseone
Sniff, sniff...I finally disagree with you on something.
Saying he was fired for being white is too simplistic in this case. Lying on a job application is still against the law and still a fireable offense.
He also plagerized on more than one occassion as well. Irregardless he certainly was not worthy of his position.

Lolo
Lying on an application, plagiarizing, etc., SHOULD be firing offenses. However, in Churchill’s case they weren’t. CU’s administration had known almost since day one that Churchill and his scholarship were not what they were purported to be, and they took no action. They took no action because it did not serve their politically correct purposes to do so. It was only when their political (i.e. budgetary) situation became untenable in their view that they decided to throw their suddenly expendable embarrassment to the curb. Make no mistake. Their 2-year old “investigation” added no new insights to what they had already known, but had chosen to ignore until now. This entire carnival – the reasons for his hiring, his continued employment, and ultimately, his reason for dismissal – was a piece of political theatre.

CU's culpability
Colorado University knew all about Churchill – AND THEY WERE OK WITH IT, until outraged taxpayers began howling at politicians to turn off the money spigot and the politicians started to listen. So when dismayed politically correct leftists grouse about the school administration’s capitulation to political pressure they are correct. But this is a good thing. Had this grassroots political pressure not been brought to bear, then CU’s dirty little devil’s pact with Churchill would have continued indefinitely.

So, where does that leave us? Well, Churchill’s gone and that’s good. But the administration and political culture that allowed Churchill to thrive there is still in place. The administration will try to convince the public that Churchill was merely one lone rogue who managed to pull a fast one on the too-trusting but otherwise blameless university. But their failure to act previously on known information provides the proof of that lie. Like as not, Churchill’s erstwhile peers in the professoriate will never admit he was deserving of dismissal in the first place.

So in other words, it will be business as usual in Boulder – unless pressure for institutional reform is demanded and maintained.

THINK FOR A SEC
Is there anything more important than closing our borders, to prevent criminals, terrorists, nuclear bombs getting through?

IF SO, WHY DON'T THE MEDIA SHOUT ABOUT THAT EVERY DAY, 24/7....?????

The Real Shame
The real shame of the Churchill imbroglio is not so much that people of Churchill’s kind exist. We all know that morally corrupt people exist and that given half a chance, they will take advantage of any opportunity to exploit that comes their way. No, the real shame is that supposedly intelligent professional administrators and faculty allow him and countless others across this country to do so. Indeed, the institutions they have erected to occupy the places formerly dedicated to actual learning have created the Churchill template. He is the product of their creation, not the subversive interloper the administration would like for us to see.

DIRTY SAND
WARD CHURCHILL AND HIS LIFE IS BUILT ON A HUGE PASSLE OF LIES, THIS IS PROVEN, ON RECORD AND THE TIME IT TOOK TO DISMISS HIM WAS FAR TO LONG. THIS POINTS OUT THE FALLACY OF OUR ACADEMIC ADMINSTRATION AND THE WAY THEY PUT PRIORITY INTO PERSPECTIVE. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO KEEP A PROVEN CON ARTIST LIKE CHUCHILL ON THE PAYROLL FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME ONCE HE WAS EXPOSED AND WHY WERE HIS FAULTY CREDENTIALS NOT BROUGHT FORTH TO RID THE COLLEGE OF HIS POISONOUS LIES IN A MORE EXPEDIENT WAY?

Lolo
I may be able to help here.

The point of my post, which I presented indirectly, is that a non-white (apparently) would not have been fired for any of those offenses you mention. It was only after an exhaustive investigation confirmed that he was NOT a minority that CU felt it was OK to fire him.

Your 11:04 post was excellent. I have a slightly different, and less charitable, take on CU’s rationale for firing Churchill however. Your suggestion that the administration felt they could fire him once they were satisfied he was “only white,” implies they had a desire to fire him in the first place. My contention is that, left to their own devices, they would not have fired him at all, since it had been clear for some time that he was only some pathetic white guy pretending to be an Indian. While I suppose it would have been less embarrassing for them to have Churchill be an actual Indian, they seemed content to keep him around as a fake Indian, as the next best thing. So long as he was advancing the agenda ball in their view, they were willing to turn a blind eye to those few quibbling details, such as his being a pathological liar and plagiarist. It was only when they were threatened with being held to account for their complicity in his fraud that they decided to deliver him up to their common enemies.

The gist of your analysis is correct though, in that were he actually an “honest injun” (so to speak) they would still be defending the lying plagiarist.

wiseone
Okay that makes me feel better. Your one of my favorites(I admit it) so i don't want to disagree.

Real American
You wouldn't know racism and bigotry if it bit you in the A$$! Go rant someplace else.

Real American: Fact check call
Whoa there straw man basher. Going to have to call for a fect check on all those unattributed quotes you assigned to TH posters. We got the 3 you pulled from this thread, but I think you made up all the others.

Big words and stuff
The word "paradigm" is peculiar looking and big sounding, so there must be something wrong with it. I hope when my kids grow up and go to college no teacher will use that word around them. Children don't need to learn those big scary words like "hegemony," "reactionary," and "patriarchy." They just need to know how to spot those unpatriotic anti-American liberal types and kick them out of our institutions. That way they can all just learn about how great America is and how much good we do around the world. Children don't need to learn about that history and diversity stuff anyway. They just need to know how to read instructions and count things like dollars.

paradigms and other effluvia
The use of "paradigm" is a clue that the piece in which it appears will score a high buzzword rating, The use of "extant paradigm" is an even surer indicator. "Synergisim," or "synergistic," are also candidates, as is "self-actualising."
In general, an excessive use of multi-syllable, obscure words is another tip-off that the writer is a self-styled "intellectual."
Every once in a while, someone concocts a farrago of meaningless jargon, addressing some scholarly sounding topic, and gets his fraud published, whereupon the author reveals his hoax. This is not limited to the soft sciences, either. I wish I could remember the most recent example of this.

Nice try Red Amerikan
Real American seems to have studied at the fact finding knee of Heap Big Chief Churchill himself. Notice how he elides from a couple of actual quotes of arguable bigotry to a wholesale list of blatant, unattributed, and probably made-up slanders to which he attempts to impugn ALL TH posters other than the original three.

What a piker.

Wbheff
In the first hour of my first PhD-level class, I think I heard the word paradigm 100 times. I didn’t even know what the word meant until I could look it up later. I still don’t think that professor knows what it means, but boy did she love that word.

I must admit though that I do still occasionally use the word in my work, but only when I am having a private joke with a friend at the expense of some bureaucratic popinjay who is impressed by the sound of such self-important pontificatry, and only then when I can wink about it behind their back, just to make sure the people I respect know I am having a joke.

Real American: Really?
Granted, some of the comments you previously cited were “culturalist” in nature & others blatantly stereotypical overgeneralizations. But said comments pale in comparison to the vitriolic profanity a contrary viewpoint would receive on “progressive” websites like DU & DK. That being said, philosophical conservatives contend that three things convey national identity: Borders, Language & Culture. Currently the US is experiencing an “invasion” of mostly Mexican-nationals who respect none of these three concepts. Ironically, when in Mexico, foreign nationals are expected to speak Spanish. Foreign nationals in Mexico are not entitled to any of the rights, privileges & social services that illegal-immigrant Mexicans enjoy in this country. Speaking as a taxpayer, I quite frankly resent the overt “nationalism” and associated entitlement mentality of a group of 3rd-world escapees. I probably paid more $$$$ in income taxes in 2006 than you earned in the same year.

Additionally, most American taxpayers (majority= white, minimally-franchised white males) don’t want another entitlement-minded group of “hyphenated-Americans” established who will demand the same entitlements as other government-sanctioned “victim groups”: Female-chauvinists, African-Americans, etc. You can celebrate multiculturalism all you want, but leave my wallet alone: a 2004 “Center for Immigration Studies” whitepaper indicated that (a) 41% of all lawful immigrant, high-school drop-out households, and (b) 28.5% of all illegal immigrant dropout households are enjoying some kind of public assistance. Guess how many of these immigrants are LATINO? The American taxpayer shouldn’t be subsidizing the so-called “low cost” labor that is supposedly the backbone of our economy. I also have enough issues dealing with the current form of “institutional racism/sexism”: anti-white male affirmative action.

Rob
A model for dental hygiene, perhaps?

Wow R.A.... (hmm, Real American)
That's a lot of quotes - too bad you don't have names & dates for them.

By the way - wondering what all of that has to do with WC and/or academic integrity?

TOWNHALL = RACISTS and their APOLOGISTS
ALL of the bigoted comments I posted came directly from Townhall.com's comment section under Linda Chavez columns over the past 2 months, most of which came under her column located here: http://www.townhall.com/columnists/LindaChavez/2007/05/25/latino_fear_and_loathing?page=full&comments=true

So how did the Townhall Bigots Club respond? By insinuating that these comments are not bigoted (Lolo); By denying the authenticity of the bigoted comments list (Sandman); And by excusing the bigoted comments as "overgeneralizations" (Demosthenes).

I've posted their comments below, just to be clear exactly who it is we are dealing with here. It is evident that on Townhall.com there are a large group of bigots and their apologists who either support them or deny they exist.

MuscleDaddy's hypocrisy
MuscleDaddy doesn't wonder where the connection to Ward Churchill is when it comes to those posting bigoted comments on this site (, he just what the connection is when I expose said bigotry. This blatant hypocrisy exists all over Townhall.com.

When I post the list of bigoted comments made by Townhall's readers, rarely if ever does anyone on Townhall respond with condemnation of the bigoted comments, just condemnation of me for exposing it.

Notice how not one Townhall reader condemned the following comment, posted to this very page earlier today: "Go Home. Why don't you just go live in Mexico and take you wet back invaders with you." -RA: Friday, July, 27, 2007 10:14 AM

Bigotry. Hypocrisy. Apologists. This is what Townhall is all about.

The first paragraph got messed up in my last post. What it should say is:

Having a little trouble loading that link to your supposed proof, but while I am waiting to confirm each and every one of your quotes there, a question for you.

Assuming, for the sake of argument, that there are bigots posting on TH and that by association anyone else posting here is by virtue of their posting here, also in complete agreement with the bigots, then wouldn't that make you a bigot also, since you are also posting here?

Shall I just pick at random a hateful post made by some left-wing kook posting on TH and say - look that's what you are too - because you also do not like conservatives?

Here are more words that can be found in the Liberal Lexicon of Pontification Staples:

Dynamic, egregious, institutionalized, oppression, empowerment , entitlement, disenfranchise, downtrodden, under privileged or privileged, self- actualize, untapped resources, felt need, societal taboo, draconian , enlighten, progressive, inclusive, comprehensive, pluralism, egalitarian, and culturally sensitive.

These words appeared in virtually every bit of reading I had to do in grad school. Its akin to watching little kids play dress up: if I put on alot of syllables and/or invent some expressions, it makes all my assumed truths valid.

I have no doubt that you are correct about the money aspect. Regardless of their political attitude, when the money stopped coming in, that was what moved them to can him.

Your characterization of Churchill as a pathetic white guy desperate for attention spawned another thought. Was it not inevitable that Churchill would, sooner or later, say something to get himself canned?

Would he not have kept trying to "top" himself until he enentually went so far too far that they would have to get rid of him?

Isn't this what actually happened? The guy has been a butthole practically since the day he got hired.

And won't liberal academia now pronounce him an important voice that got railroaded, use this excuse to overlook his total lack of credentials, and give him another platform from which to preach his extremist liberal creed by making him a professor emeritus of something or other at some other university?

Don't just treat the symptoms...

I live in Denver, so the Chutch imbroglio has pretty much dominated the news here (It was really hard to force down breakfast after waking up to a full-spread photo of the self-aggrandizing buffoon with his fist in the air on the front page of the "Rocky Mountain News.")

This clown may be on his way out of town, but the circus isn't going anywhere. My taxes are still financing "ethnic studies" programs that are nothing more than indoctrination camps for grievance-peddling parasites. Until alumni and the public at large hit schools where it hurts ($$$), nothing will change.

AudiR10...don't change your name...
There is no need to change your name to get on the Affirmative Action gravy train. I am half-Mexican on my mother's side, so I have an English last name. However I also look almost identical to my father, so most consider me 'white'.

During grad school I was awarded an NSF Minority Fellowship and a minority scholarship from my university because I marked "hispanic descent" on the applications forms. While it was true in my case, no one ever bothered to check my background. I later found out that there is a "don't ask" policy for this type of thing as it sould be 'insensitive' and 'bigoted' to ask a minority to actually prove their status.

Churchill will get speaking engagements
Lots of them.

I remember Richard Kreimer here in Jersey in the 80's. He was a card carrying prick who had inherited a decent estate, but blew the fortune partying. Kreimer then became homeless, never washed, and set up shop in the Morristown Public Library. He would sit as close as he could to patrons, knowing full well that he smelled like feces, and then sued the library for throwing him out. Prejudice against the downtrodden, you know.

Kreimer got a settlement of $250,000.00 and was hired as a speaker by Rutgers University and others. Kreimer, the tireless advocate for the homeless, has since blown his settlement and speaker's fees and moved to south Jersey to resume being a victim of this cruel society. Sickening.

"My taxes are still financing 'ethnic studies' programs that are nothing more than indoctrination camps for grievance-peddling parasites."

You have a fundamental misunderstanding about public education. Ethnic studies isn't about you and your tax dollars. Ward Churchill doesn't work for you. It's about the students who attended his classes. He works for them and his community.

If you abolish programs of study you don't like then you control the education of other people. It's not a free society when people with your attitude control the education of other people. If you don't want to learn the stuff ethnic studies professors teach, then don't attend the classes. But don't decide for other people. That's what freedom is all about.

Bigoted comments on this site are legit
Some of the bigoted comments listed before which came from the readers of an earlier Chavez column have now been removed by Townhall, by those comments WERE posted to this site.

Don't doubt for a second that there are legitimate bigots all over this website, thanks to the immigration debate that very much encouraged these bigots to come and speak out.

Bigotry is not a republican/democrat issue or a conservative/liberal issue. It is a rational/irrational issue; the people who post racist comments on sites like this aren't all conservatives by any stretch of the imagination. There is every reason to believe there are as many liberal racists as conservative racists.

My 2 cents.

oops
First paragraph I meant to say "but those comments WERE posted to this site"

culture and diversity
I have strong views on immigration and culture, some people have accused me of being against diversity. Just the opposite. If I want to see how the Mexicans live I will go to Mexico, not Van Nuys. If I want to know how the Algerians live, I will go to Algeria, not Paris. I have visited about 70 countries, therefore 70 cultures.

If we let people go from this country to that, and not require them to adopt the culture of their destination country, soon that culture, therefore that country, will disappear.

Already too many foreigners want to live in the USA and in Western Europe, obeying all the tenets of their previous culture that they hated enough to leave. If it was so bad that you left, why bring it along?

The rights, the duties, and the privileges protected and guaranteed by any Culture, do not, and must never include the right to destroy that Culture.

Culture and Diversity
People can embrace any culture they want as long as they follow basic moral rules. To tell people they must lose their culture to live in another society is to seek the death of their soul. Culture is in us. You don't ask people to rip from their insides that which gives them meaning in their lives - unless that which gives them meaning is immoral. Indeed, one of those immoral cultural tendencies - fortunately not present in all culture - is the desire to impose upon people who seek a better life ethnocentric and provincial demands. Cultural diversity makes a society stronger, not weaker. Celebrate difference!

Chavez and Churchill
Chavez did no research in producing her essay. She simply regurgitated the summary of the report produced against Churchill. Had she done so she would have discovered how bogus the charges against Churchill actually are.

Take, for instance, the “controversy” over Churchill’s interpretation of the Dawes Act (the General Allotment Act of 1887). The Dawes Act established rules for handing out land to American Indians (reservations). Churchill argues that the act established the use of blood quantum in the definition of “Indian.” The concept of blood quantum refers to how many parts Indian a person is. For example, my great grandfather’s grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee, which, according to blood quantum, made my great grandfather one-quarter Cherokee. The effect of the Dawes Act was that Indians took up blood quantum as a means for distributing land, since who was an Indian and who was not had everything to do with who got land and who did not.

To be sure, one can read the Dawes Act and not find anything about blood quantum in the act. Does that mean Churchill is wrong? Sure, literally, if you read legal documents ignorant of historical context. But if context means anything to you (like it does to any competent historian), then Churchill is right, as the Dawes Act induced Indians to internalize the race consciousness of white supremacy; Indian tribes adopted the racist method of blood quantum to determine who was an Indian. (Moreover, the enrollment cards prescribed by the Dawes Act had a blood quantum column for enrollees to indicate what part Indian they were – if the Dawes Act did not prescribe such a thing, then what is a blood quantum column doing on the form that is an element of its implementation?) In any case, it’s a matter of historical interpretation, not "falsification" as university administration claimed.

But Chavez isn't concerned with the truth here. The purpose of not debating but discrediting Churchill’s interpretation through this sham of an investigation (and if not on purpose, the function of it) is to deny the racial basis of the United States' Indian policy - the same purpose served by discrediting Churchill’s analysis of biological warfare conducted by the US Army against Indian civilians (by giving them small pox-infected blankets). Churchill's dismissal from US-Boulder is part of a larger right-wing nationalist campaign to reassert the moral integrity of “white Christian civilization” in the face of challenges by voices who were, until civil rights and diversity penetrated larger society, successfully excluded by the ideological barricades erected around (our allegedly democratic) institutions.

The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which Chavez cites approvingly, is one of those organizations waging this war against progress and enlightenment in higher education. It wants schools to be indoctrination centers, which is why it opposes the type of critical research Ward Churchill (and others, such as Norman Finkelstein) conducts.

O' the irony
In a previous article where Chavez essentially accused every member of Congress who opposed amnesty along with the majority of our population of being motivated by bigotry, Chavez firmly established herself as a race-baiter.

Now we have one race-baiter criticizing another race-baiter. It's too funny!

No matter what she writes, Chavez can no longer be taken seriously. I visit her articles solely for the purpose of giving her One Checkmark in the ratings.

KILROY'S REPORT
churchill is now going to deliver pizza. He has landed a job commensurate with his skill level. It's amazaing that in an arena where one would believe academic integrity existed that colorado never checked his credentials. That the flagship university in that state would assign someone with such flimsy credentials as dept chairman baffles the mind. Previous articles have stated how popular he was with the students. That is noi substitute for academic integrity. Further universities who perpetrate the fraud of any studies program is stealing tuition money. Studies programs are typically the most marginal of subjects taught by persons who believe in victimhood and merely prepare students to stay in the university environment where they perpetuate this academic fraud.

Business must have bright people
Those of us that have a well rounded education notice every day the absolute ignorance of people around us. They don’t understand the most basic reference to anything historical or from classical literature. Because media and academic personalities are in front of the camera or class so much, their lack of knowledge is easy to see or hear, and we witness it on a daily basis. It is only compounded when they then make an attempt to change the meaning of something they oppose, or something someone said with which they disagree. It would be comical were it not such an indictment of the education bureaucracy in the USA and the complete incompetence of it. Ward Churchill is simply following the template of the university that employs him and if he did not, someone who would follow it would have his job.

That most people do not make associations between facts and findings is evident in many jury decisions. That those same people vote is a travesty. That they decide the election of our leadership is terrifying. An attempt to explain the most basic historical or economic fact to them results is their saying something like, “well it’s all a big scam to rip off the poor people just like it has always been.” They don’t want to hear the truth and can not understand it when it is presented to them. The future, what there is of it, in this nation is dependent on being able to appeal to these products of our government schools.

In health care, where the decisions people make who work here can mean life or death, we can not have anything but the best. We simply must have those people who work together to accomplish the task without regard to their political ideas. Students graduating from colleges and universities known for political ideaology will not work here. Diversity is great until it's you on the operating table and you hear the surgeon ask the nurse what she thinks that little red thingie is there in the field and if she thinks it ought to come out.

Universities that turn out politically correct graduates will find their products unsuited for todays demanding business environment and that goes for almost any job that has any responsibility or accountability associated with it. It isn't restricted to health care.

Culture and Diversity
To tell people they must lose their culture to live in another society is to seek the death of their soul.
---------------

You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. They left where they were because that culture was lousy, and came here because our culture is much better, that is as long as people with your stunted ideas don’t get more power.

Diversity as it is intended to be, means from country to country, not the phony diversity of people going to another country, and taking their culture with them, and refusing to assimilate.

Years ago I visited the UN headquarters twice, and I asked that all immigration be stopped, worldwide. If you were born there, you stay there. Except for one thing, Invitation. If a country asks you to come, you can, but you have two or three years to eliminate all signs of your previous culture, and completely adopt the culture of the country you went to, or out you go.

When we visit another country We are there to learn about their home and way of life, and we try not to tell everyone that our home and our culture is best, even though we are positive that it is.

Remember, a country has two things, and two things only — a border and a culture, if you violate either, out you go.

Hello Ms Chavez
Well, you did agree to write for townhall, didn't you? See what kind of folks you're working with?

As for the suggestions that you only recently swam across the Rio Grande with your counterfeit Green card held in your teeth, I would post tonight on townhall that you've already explained your Hispanic ancestors have been here since the 17th Century---about 200 years before Ellis Island was opened---but I doubt they'd believe me. They tell me often enough that liberals always lie.

Coraje, y no te fies de quien no se fia de nadie.

Why people leave
Most people leave where they are because of economic hardship, jim, not because of their culture. I thought everybody knew this (it's self evident in any case, since they don't leave their culture behind).

But here's something a lot of people don't know (because they don't study political economy): economic conditions are terrible throughout the world because of global capitalism. It's the principle of development-undevelopment.

Simply put, development in one place causes underdevelopment in another place, because of the nature of capitalism - namely, the wealth generated by labor and resources is transferred from one place to another.

It's obvious from where wealth comes and to where it goes. All one needs to do is look at which countries are poor and which countries are rich. This is the push-pull dynamic that causes immigration.

Life and Business
Black Prince, there is more to life than money (I truly feel sorry for you if you disagree). Business not part of a liberal arts education. Liberal arts is for ENLIGHTENMENT and CITIZENSHIP. Business is about exploitation and profit, not enlightenment and citizenship.

Culture and Diversity
wwsword writes: Friday, July, 27, 2007 10:02 PM

You Say, “development in one place causes underdevelopment in another place.” Tell that to China who is getting rich making things that people in the US want to buy. And remember, those jobs that people like you say an American won’t take, has to do with the fact that those same Americans won’t pay the price a product would cost if the wages were raised to where they would take the job. It does get confusing doesn’t it.

What if Georgie Washington, Tommy Jefferson, and Benny Franklin had said, “This place is a mess, let’s go to Canada.”

Are you telling me that people in some other country are so stupid that they don’t know why they are over populated? You want them to come here and bring that culture? Forget it. Economics has to do with work ethic. That and birth rate both are both part of a culture.

China
Jim, Don't confuse the handful of people getting rich in China with the hundreds of millions of Chinese living in poverty. Half the population lives on less than 2 dollars a day.

Another FRAUD- Student Loans
Churchill was just another abomination who just poisoned minds and got caught. This kind of fraud is rampant in the university system. Ho hum. I don't believe he actually destroyed any lives, any families, or caused anyone to commit suicide. Go to http://www.studentloanjustice.org and you will see the fraud that is sentencing millions of ex-students and their families untold suffering. Their only crime was to fall for the promise of an education and a bright future after graduating. The colleges dangled little pamphlets with pictures of happy graduates working at great I.T. jobs. Just sign the dotted line and an otherwise penniless student could have thousands or tens of thousands of dollars at their disposal to be like the white woman, the Asian man, and the black man on the pamphlet. No credit check or job needed! Then the student never finds that job or gets in an accident and becomes disabled. No problem, the Government understands, right? No, they don't.They simply garnish his or her Social Security payments and disability payments. So the dream turns out to be a permanent disability and an unpayable debt for the rest of his or her life. And guess who this hits the hardest? Those same people on the pamphlet.

In defense of "paradigm"
... it's a convenient word that succinctly expresses what it would otherwise take 6-10 words to say.

It IS misused and abused by many academics. But it's still a good word. No need to retreat to the closet and turn all the lights off to use it -- as long as you do know what it means, and only use it to convey its proper sense (as opposed to using it as subliminally evocative filler, to give your meandering BS pronouncements an air of intellectual heft).

There now. The basis is established for me to continue to employ the word without blush or apology. :-)

Education and work
So, Poz, there's no correlation between education and success in the job market?

Another question, the only purpose of a college education is to turn out workers?

Linda Chavez = Intellectual fraud
I stopped reading Linda Chavez after she revealed herself to be a race hustler in the Jackson/Sharpton mold.

Paradigm and Anti-Intellectualism
In social science, paradigm has two interrelated meanings and both are useful.

First, paradigm means "best example." The paradigm then becomes a template, pattern, or design with which to generate more instances.

Second, paradigm is a set of assumptions, concepts, relations, and methods that guide a field of study.

So one word sums up all those things. See, words are efficient in that way.

More importantly, though, is the observation that conservatives fear words. It's part and parcel of the anti-intellectualism that permeates the authoritarian-reactionary mind.

Right wingers hate intelligent people. Intelligent people intimidate them and make them feel inadequate. Right wingers are left to respond with insults and bullying.

Most intellectuals are liberal and leftist for a reason. They're better educated, part of which is reflected in their vocabulary. This is why the university is disproportionately represented by liberals and leftists.

This is also why, in a counterrevolution, the right purges the social institutions of liberals and leftists. The masses are more easily controlled when they don't have critical thinkers to expose the webs of deceit spun by business and political elites, the latter represented by Linda Chavez, Lynne Cheney, and the like.

WOW. SIMPLY WOW. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE MORON THIS GUY JACKBENIMBLE MUST BE. WHEN DID CHAVEZ ACCUSE "THE MAJORITY OF OUR POPULATION OF BEING MOTIVATED BY BIGOTRY"? I DON'T REMEMBER THAT.

I'LL QUOTE CHAVEZ FROM THE PRECISE COLUMN JACK REFERS TO, WHERE SHE SAID PEOPLE WHO SIMPLY DON'T LIKE LATINOS ARE "fewer than 10 percent of the general population, at most."

LINDA CHAVEZ ALSO WROTE THIS THE FOLLOWING WEEK ON NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE: "Americans are the most tolerant people in the world; those same surveys I used to describe racial/ethnic attitudes bear this out. A 1991 Times Mirror Center for the People and the Press poll, for example, shows that Americans are the most tolerant of those measured, with 13 percent disliking blacks, while the British came in second, with 21 percent disliking the Irish. And among Americans, whites appear to be more tolerant than other groups as well."

SO HOW DOES THIS GUY JACKBENIMBLE DISTORT CHAVEZ'S COMMENTS? BY CALLING HER A RACE BAITER AND CLAIMING SHE CALLED THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS BIGOTS. HE EVEN ADMITS HE ONLY "visits her articles solely for the purpose of giving her One
Checkmark in the ratings."

HEY JACK, YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB BUDDY. ALL THOSE 1 CHECK MARKS YOU'VE VOTED FOR HAVE MANAGED TO HOLD HER TO ONLY A 4 STAR RATING THIS WEEK.

ACTUALLY, LILLY, I DOUBT MS. CHAVEZ "AGREED" TO WRITE FOR TOWNHALL. ARE YOU 5 YEARS OLD? THAT SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY EXPLANATION, OTHER THAN YOU BEING A DOOOOOCHE BAG, FOR YOU TO BELIEVE MS. CHAVEZ "AGREED" TO WRITE FOR TOWNHALL.

TO ALL THE DOOOOOCHE BAGS AND 5 YEAR OLDS ON THIS SITE, A SYNDICATED COLUMNIST DOES NOT "AGREE" TO WRITE FOR WHOEVER PICKS UP THEIR COLUMNS. THE SYNDICATE SELLS THE COLUMNS TO VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS, INCLUDING WEBSITES LIKE TOWNHALL.COM. THE COLUMNISTS DON'T HAVE A SAY WHERE THE COLUMNS GO.

THE IGNORANCE ON THIS WEBSITE IS SIMPLY ASTONISHING.

Black Prince says . . .
That most people do not make associations between facts and findings is evident in many jury decisions. An attempt to explain the most basic fact to them results is their saying something like, “well it’s all a big scam to rip off the poor people just like it has always been.”

But wwsword says . . .”business is about exploitation and profit" which of course, comes straight from Carl Marx.

It is almost unbelieveable that after the world witnessed the total collapse and failure of that kind of thinking, that anyone would bring it up here so everyone can witness their complete ignorance that fact on the World Wide Web.

It is the height of hypocrisy and ignorance to blame business and health care for providing the highest standard of living in the world and say they are exploiting anyone.

So wwsword, if you want to live in a third world nation, there are plenty to choose including Russia, where the government exploits the people. Take your pick and go, but don’t come here and blame those that feed, house and clothe you and make your life so easy as to be the envy of the entire world.

Black Prince
Russia wasn't a third world country under communism. Now that it's capitalist, it is. You just blew up your own argument. Thanks. Saves me time.
