Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

One year ago, the United States and the European Union decided to cut off aid to the Palestinian Authority after Palestinians elected Hamas, a U.S. and E.U.-designated terrorist organization, to lead their government. Now, it turns out, Western sources, including the U.S. government, have actually put more money into the West Bank and Gaza since Hamas took over than in previous years.

What happened to Western resolve not to legitimate a bloodthirsty gang of pseudo-politicians who are committed to wiping Israel off the map?

In 2005, the U.S. gave about $400 million in aid to Palestinians directly and indirectly through United Nations refugee agencies, according to recent press reports. In 2006, that amount went up to $468 million. And the E.U. and its member countries gave Palestinians about $916 million in 2006, not counting what they gave through U.N. agencies, up from $711 million in 2005.

U.S. and European officials claim that the increases don't constitute support for the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority since the aid goes directly to individuals or is distributed by international organizations and aid groups.

The idea behind the Western embargo of the P.A. was that Hamas' support among Palestinians would fall if the Islamist political party couldn't deliver services. Some Western governments also hoped that a cut-off in aid -- without which the P.A. cannot effectively operate -- would pressure Hamas leaders to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

But some cautioned that an aid embargo would backfire if the suffering of the Palestinian people increased -- so the U.S. and the E.U. began funneling money through international agencies and private aid groups.

The policy hasn't worked. Hamas is no less militant or violent than ever. Much of the violence recently has been aimed at fighting the rival Fatah movement, which has resulted in more than 100 Palestinian deaths in Gaza since December.

And despite the recent agreement on a unity government between Hamas and Fatah, Hamas leaders remain committed to eliminating the state of Israel, which the group not only doesn't recognize but can't even bear to name.

In a speech to Palestinian lawmakers last weekend, Ismail Haniya, the Hamas prime minister, reiterated that "resistance in all its forms, including popular resistance against the occupation, is a legitimate right of the Palestinian people." In the past, Haniya has talked about the importance of "confronting the occupation," which is just another way of saying that Hamas believes in killing Israelis, including civilians.

But what about the Palestinian people? Have they been helped by the estimated $1.2 billion in aid that the U.N. and International Monetary Fund say they received in 2006? Are they more likely to embrace peace and renounce violence? Are their lives better with more aid flowing in from international organizations?

In fact, the evidence suggests that all our millions have done is to further impoverish Palestinians, turning them into ever more helpless dependents, whose likely response to our largesse will be to despise us further. Palestinian gross domestic product went down by 6.6 percent in 2006, while poverty rose by 30 percent and more than one in three Palestinians were unemployed.

When have handouts ever worked? In the United States, we learned that welfare for our own citizens not only turned into a debilitating crutch, it created a more or less permanent underclass.

At least American welfare recipients weren't using the cash and their free time to build bombs to blow up their neighbors. The same can't be said for the Palestinians who have received Western aid. Israelis found a bomb-making factory in the West Bank town of Nablus just last month.

The Palestinians will never have a better life if they continue their destructive, self-defeating hatred of the Jewish state and its people. Palestinians have developed a culture built on hate. Until they learn to devote their energies into helping themselves rather than tearing down each other and their neighbors, we should not spend one more dime on aid.

You don't knock down your enemy with one hand and then pick him up with the other. You don't give him strength to strike you back. My father use to say, "s_ _ t or get of the pot". If you are going to boycot, then boycot. Go all the way until the job is done. Don't be self defeating as we are doing here.

Why?
Why do American politicians borrow money from one Nation and give it to another Nation and leave our Nation's children in debt?

It's Time
It's time to cut off the Palestinians. They have proved themselves incapable of any type of governing. We are feeding the terorist beast that has absolutely no historical claim to that land what so ever. Might as well take a match to your money because it would be more profitable. Why would anyone want to create a nation of racists anyway?

Roy:
The reason there is no Palestinian state today
is because Arafat rejected generous terms from
Israel, preferring instead to continue murdering
Israeli civilians. In this, he had the support
of most "Palestinians" (a wholly imaginary
nationality, as pointed out above by svpallava).

On 9/11, the Palestinian people poured into the
streets to celebrate the murder of thousands of
Americans. In free elections, they selected a
terrorist organization to represent them.

I hope the world will never be blemished by
the appearance of a Palestinian state.

Stop sending our $ to Terrorist
No matter what Roy says, Israel is an Ally, the rest of the Muslim ME are not...I do not want to send another dime of "Foreign Aid" / Taxpayer thief to Egypt or any other country and never to declared enemies of our country.

Roy
In your travels to the Middle East, have you spent any time trying to convince the Arab nations surrounding Israel that the way to advance peace between all God's children would be to first recognize Israel's right to peacefully exist?

Pappy - 1967
You need to re-read a factual history of the 1967 war. The story has been so distorted that most Americans think that Israel was attacked first. False. Israel launched a preemptive attack, justifying it for a number of reasons. Only then did Arab armies come to the aid of Egypt. Israel had some forceful arguments, but this notion that Israel was attacked first is simply not history. As I mentioned, as in most such situations, there are two sides. My interest is in bringing peace to the Holy Land, which I have visited four times. I am a Christian concerned about peace between all God's children. I know a lot of Christians think such a goal is silly.

Roy
I have to dispute your statements that Israel declared the land theirs in 1948, and attacked their neighbors.

The United Nations convinced England to give up Colonial Sovereignty in "Palestine" and then the UN split the country into three sections. One for Israel, and two for Palestinians. This pi$$ed off all the Muslims surrounding Israel, Egypt started to encroach into Israeli held territory when Israel drove them out in 1956.

Still, having the Zionists living in the area angered the Muslims, and so in 1967 all the countries surrounding Israel and Palestine attacked; Israel did not attack them.

Days later, Israel had driven them all back and held the new territory until Jimmy Carter got them to give most of it back.

Israel never attacked without provocation. Specifically in the Six Day War, the Muslims thought they could wipe Israel off the map, the map the United Nations drew and the rest of the world accepted.

In the last twenty years, Israel has agreed to every peace deal brokered, and the Palestinians have broken the accords every time.

Yassar Arafat was an Egyptian who hated Jews, he never intended peace with them, read his writings from 1970 until 1990. He intended to drive them out by any means.

Better re-read your history books.

Again, Mr. Hobbit
There are two sides to the aggression story. 1948 - Israel declared that the land was theirs. I consider that a draw as to aggression. It can be argued either way. 1956 - Israel attacks Egypt. Fortunately Ike was president and demanded that the Israelis withdraw. That, by the way, is when I began to read both sides.
1967 - Israel conducts a preemptive attack to begin the 6-day war. Occupies all of what is left of the former Palestine mandate. 1973 - Egypt attacks Israel to regain the Sinai. 1982 - Israel invades Lebanon, going all the way to Beirut. 2006 - Israel invades Lebanon, doing enormous damage, killing many, drops cluster bombs. Why? Two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped in an effort to get a few of the 9000 or so Palestinians out of continue incarceration in Israeli prisons.

As I said at the outset there is enough blame to go around. The challenge is to bring peace with justice. If you don't want to join in solving this problem, you are part of the problem. I suspect that you aren't open-minded enough to investigate both sides fairly. That's sad for Israel in the long run, as it will be the loser. Why should Americans die for Israel? Only if Israel occupies the high moral group. Read the NYTimes story today re Israeli soldiers who served in occupied territory - and weep.

Thank our Ally, the Saudis
Saudi royals funding Palestinian jihad
by Jon Dougherty
WorldNetDaily.com, July 9, 2003

The ROYAL FAMILY OF SAUDI ARABIA donated more than $4 BILLION to the Palestinians between 1998 and 2003 to help finance offensive TERRORIST OPERATIONSagainst Israel, a new report says.

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, a Washington, D.C-based group that monitors Mideast media, the House of Saud's support has gone to "'MUJAHIDEEN FIGTERS' and 'FAMILYS OF MARTYRS'" killed in operations against the Jewish state.

"For decades the royal family of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been the MAIN FINANCIAL SUPPORTER financial supporter of Palestinian groups fighting Israel, through the creation of two major committees," says the report, which was released July 3.

Re hobbit
Hobbit writes: "Personally I wish we could just nuke the whole lot of them." That's his remedy for the 'Palestinian problem'. His solution underscores the problem. Too many Israelis and Christian Zionists share such a wild view. They have a racist attitude, as though Palestinians were inferior.

A suggestion to Hobbit: read literature presenting both sides with an open mind. I was 100% pro-Israel until I did that. You don't need to stop defending Israel while realizing that the Palestinians also have fair complaints. After all, they had nothing to do with the holocaust, but they have paid a heavy price because of it.

As for offering Arafat just about everything, reading both sides will set you straight on that, too.

Some people are ready to live with perpetual warfare, hatred, invasions, killing, religion-induced bitterness, persecution, cluster bombs, suicide bombers, etc. I'm not ready to do that. The USA is in a position to bring justice and peace to the Holy Land. It's tragic that we haven't made a genuine effort. Clinton, for example, sent three negotiators to work on a solution. Guess what? All were staunchly pro-Israel! Domestic politics is the main problem. Many of us are becoming increasingly annoyed by that, too. Send a Jim Baker instead of a Dennis Ross and you might get somewhere.

Roy
Hey Roy get a clue. Israel has only done what it needed to do to protect its people including settling on the West Bank. Like so many others you distort history and ignore the fact that every case of agression has been from the Palestinian side and every case of retaliation has been from the Israeli side. How it is people like you can ignore that is ridiculous. If you really wanted to be fair you would agree. Israel is a peaceful nation and they just want to be left alone. It is not the Jews wanting to destroy them. wake up. That is why Americans defend them.

liberalgoodman
As usual with libtards you went right to the Israel thing. What is it about Israel that libs hate so much? Israel is the only democracy in the ME and is self-sustaining and a threat to no one. Israel only uses its military when it is threatened or attacked. More Arabs live in Israel that Jews live in Arab countries which only proves their desire to peacefully co-exist. I do not understand the liberal soft spot for the terrorist Hamas and Palestinians in general. I have been on this Earth for over 50 years and these whackjobs have been fighting and killing each other and the Jews ever since I was old enough to notice and as I have now learned far longer than that. Israel was created in order to give the Jews a homeland of there own after what they went through in the Holocaust. They have earned their place and it is up to the U.S. to ensure their survival. Even when Arafat was offered everything he claimed he ever wanted he turned it down so he could kill more Jews. Personally I wish we could just nuke the whole lot of them.

Time for fair play
Linda Chavez and those who agree with her seem to dominate the government and media in the USA. They have demonized the Palestinians over the years. When one is assessing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there is plenty of blame to go around.

If the USA had been even-handed years ago that question might have been solved. Instead, no matter what Israel did we supported it or (as in the case of West Bank settlements) looked the other way. Unfortunately, AIPAC and its allies have enough money to bribe and enough power to intimidate any who want a fairer US policy.

It's because of our one-sidedness that we're in our present mess in the Middle East. This was the original source of deep-rooted hatred of the US that led radical Muslims to do their 9-11 thing. Had we had a balanced policy - pro-Israel AND pro-Palestinian - all this could have been avoided. Instead, our politicians are a bunch of cowards, cowed by those who try to shut down any open debate while Israel gets billions of US taxpayer money. The insinuation that Israel critics are anti-Semites (e. g., Carter) is an effective way of smearing those calling for fairness, but like McCarthyism it will not work forever.

A warning to the Israel-first crowd, whether they are Jewish extremists or wild-eyed Christian Zionists with their distortion of scripture. If justice is not obtained for the Palestinians, Israel eventually will be destroyed. Sad, but true. What needs to be done: (1) a viable Palestinian state must be formed out of the West Bank, Gaza and Golen Heights; (2) abandonment of all settlements on the West Bank, an obvious violation of international law -unless settlers are willing to live under the laws of a Plestinian state; (3) the Arab quarter of East Jerusalem becomes the Palestinian capital; (4) reimbursement of Palestinians for past injustices - property seized, home and orange groves destroyed, etc.; (5) a US guarantee of both Israeli and Palestinian security. Two states living side by side in peace could mean prosperity for both.

Fortunately, more and more Americans - including many, many Jews - realize that the Israeli lobby is really an enemy of Israeli security despite its claims. The only hope of Israeli security is a just peace, and that will come only when the Palestinians are no longer treated like dirt in their own land. Humiliation creates deep bitterness and a desire for revenge. Suicide bombers are unjustified, but Israel has all the military hardware, mainly from the US. How do you fight tanks, planes, cluster bombs, etc.? With rocks?

Genuine pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian. Why not both? It's the only way to go. The USA can make the difference, if it's not too late already. Tragically, some of these Israel-first crazies want us to attack Iran now. They seem ready to spill American blood, spend American billions, and lose our status in the world to defend the excesses of the Israeli government.

A blessed Easter to Christians, and a happy Passover to Jews. May the three Abrahamic religions learn to live together in peace and mutual respect.

For pamsparkle, and LG
There NEVER WAS an Arab country with the name "Palestine"; in fact, such a name is impossible as Arabic has no representation of the "P" sound (though it does have "B")!

And, to take a look at the originators of the concept of "Palestinians":
(1) Haj-amin Husseini, of SYRIAN (Damascene) origin--in fact, his family was known to be the originator of the infamous "Damascus Blood Libel"! Had RED (deep near-fiery red, not chestnut) hair and blue eyes, which hinted at also crusader (mostly viking) descent. Signed BLOOD-PACT with Adolf Hitler, and helped recruit SS in Bosnia and Kosovo!
(2) Yasir Arafat, born in Cairo--and who spoke with EGYPTIAN grammar/accent, never even lived in Holy Land!
(3) Faisal Husseini, related to Haj-amin, born and raised in Baghdad!

Also, a good percentage of "Palestinians" are descended from Arabs (from Syria, Iraq, etc) invited by Hajamin Husseini to counternumber Jewish Immigration to Holy Land authorised by Balfour.

The only rights the "Palestinians" have to be in the Holy Land AT ALL are the same as those of the Biharis to be in Bangladesh!

Cultue of Hate
It is not just the Palestinians who have built a culture based on hatred of the Jews but all the Arab states who teach their children to hate Israel and Jews so that they insure that according to them Peace will never come to the region without the destruction of Israel. And they somehow convince Europeans that Israel is the block to peace and the Palestinians are victims of a "Terrorist State." The Palestinians have adopted a new language to spread their propagands by such phrases and always following the word Israel with either the word genocide or terrorist state so that by some form of word association repeated constantly people will assoicate Jews, Israel, and Zionism with terrorism and genocide. And they ignore the fact the the real genocide in the world is not being committed by Israeli, Zionist, Jews but Arab Muslims in Darfur Sudan.

FUNDING THE TERROR SCHOOLS
LINDA'S COLUMN AGAIN SHOWS THAT THE IDIOCY THE PERVADES OUR STATE DEPARTMENT AND THE AGENCIES THAT HAND OUT AID TO NEEDY COUNTRIES FOR "SOCIAL IMPROVEMENT" ARE TRULY A LARGE BUNCH OF BUREAUCRATIC SCREW-UPS. WHY DO WE WANT TO GIVE MONEY TO WAHABI LIKE SCHOOLS OF HATE AND PERPETUATE THIS WAR ON TERROR AND GIVE THEM THE MEANS TO DO SO?

YOU KNOW THE DEALING IN SIMPLE LOGIC IS A MYSTERY TO THSE PEOPLE JUST LIKE TOLERANCE AND DEMOCRACY ARE TO THE VERY TERRORIST THAT WANT TO DESTROY OUR WAY OF LIFE. HERE AGAIN IS THE PROBLEM OF GOVERNMENT TRASH BEING LEFT IN THE CORNERS OF THE AGENCIES, SNOBBY, INCOMPETENT OVER PAID BUREAUCRATS, APPOINTED BY SOME VINDICTIVE ELECTEE TO LAND MINE ANOTHER ADMISTRATION AND DERAIL AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE WORLD A BIT BETTER.

THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT UNION, THEY ARE NOT UNFIREABLE, THEY ARE NOT WORTH KEEPING, THEY ARE THE TRASH THAT NEEDS TO BE SWEPT OUT INTO THE STREETS ALONG WITH THE ELECTEES THAT APPOINT OR SUPPORT THEM.

IF YOU WANT A MORE RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT AND A SMALLER BETTER GOVERNMENT, TAKE OUT THE TRASH.

Only because TownHall will not.
President Bush's support of the Am-nasty, and the congress getting into the "coyote" buss. "$2,000" each safe passage is a real bad thing aka "evil money cult work", its bad bad bad.

try it TownHall, your fingers will not fall off

Israel
LG - Israel is a country with a legitimate government, not a terrorist organization. They are also an ally. Palestine is not a country (through the decision of the Arab League in the past and their leaders in the present) and Hamas is a terrorist organization. The U.S. gives aid to many governments.

Hackamore - unlike Arab countries, Israel granted the right of citizenship to the non-Jewish people who lived within the borders when the country was established. The Arab countries do not allow Jewish people to become citizens. They don't allow "Palestinians" to become citizens.

Linda is for Open Borders, right?
Well, Israel should have open borders, too, if she thinks it's the right thing for the U.S.

Any Palestinian or even Arab in general who can walk into Israel should be put on a "path to citizenship".

Israeli handouts
Do you know how much you and I give Israel every year? Do you know the number per capita? Either you do and you're misleading your readers on purpose or you don't and you're an incompetent columnist.

NO $$$$$$$$ TO TERRORISTS
HEY, HEY, HEY, UH GEORGE, LISTEN UP!!!!!!!!!!
We don't send American tax money to terrorists. Maybe the democrats are right, you are stupid, George.

Air for Terrorists
I'd still like to know what gives Congress the right to send my tax dollars to terrorists, or the world's poor for that matter?

If I want to send my money overseas, that is my choice. The Constitution does not empower the Fed to tax the people for the purpose of aiding the world's impoverished.

The Imperial Federal Government should not be sending money out of the USA. Period.
